You're listening to Clearview Today with Dr. Abbadan Shah, the daily show that engages mind and heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm Ryan Hill. I'm John Galantis and welcome to the Clearview Today studio. We're here. Great, great conversation planned for you guys today. Great topic. We've been going through the book of Romans all through the past couple of months as so many people have been writing in telling us how much has been helping them. Dr. Shah, I can't imagine a better response than that. And I give God the credit, of course, but also you guys, you have done a phenomenal job, especially John who's really writing out all our shows and laying out everything and it's just amazing what you do.
Of course, David in the back. In fact, our whole team, Nicholas, Adam, they all work on this show. So it's not just a one person, me, it's so many people, especially the people in this room. Well, I would say there's nothing that we could do if the content wasn't there. You know, if you weren't putting in, we talked about this a little bit yesterday, but if you weren't putting in the work, the research to do all this stuff and uncover these secrets in the Bible, really, we would have nothing to talk about.
So we're very, very grateful for you. I was talking with somebody about that this week. Like they just got out of Bible study, Wednesday night Bible study, and they were like, wow, that was so incredible.
I learned so much and grew so much my understanding of not just the Bible, but of history. I say people don't really, they don't realize what they're getting. They're getting seminary level education for free.
That's true. Praise God. Fellas, how's everything going? Good. Week's been going good.
Dr. Shaw. It's going great. I love to hear it.
I love to hear it. I wanted to start today with one of our newfound favorite segments. Dr. Shaw, you preach, you preach a lot. You preach every single Sunday. I do. You preach every Saturday.
Oh yeah. Every Saturday night as well. You're doing a digging deep Bible study. So at least three times a week, if not more, you're doing some public speaking right thought today. Maybe you wanted to give it a, just kind of rest your voice, kind of see how, how people are learning from you with our new segment. That is pick it up and preach, pick it up and preach. What is picking up and preach Ryan? Someone's listening for the first time. So pick it up and preach is the distribution of random items, completely random.
We've never seen these items before this moment and we received these items and it's a very brief time slot. I would say maybe 30 seconds. Have you ever preached a full sermon in 30 seconds before? A full sermon in 30 seconds? Yeah.
Like Jonah style, like yet in 40 days and then it was going to be destroyed. I don't think I've ever done a 30 second sermon. I've, I've done a lot of 30 second ads and just a quick hard hitting Christmas message.
So maybe I've done it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Cause sometimes those Christmas ads are only 30 seconds. That's it. Yeah. Yeah.
So you begin and end. In fact, 28 seconds. Some TV spots as well. Yeah.
You did some TV spots and they have a Christmas message. That's right. Yeah. So I've done 30 seconds.
Yeah, I have. Well, let's see how we fare today. So what, who is distributing the items? Dr. Shah, you got the I am. I am. And really David is the one, our sound engineer who's behind the curtain over there. He's the one who, yeah. Very cool.
So today let's see. I don't even know what these items are. Oh, okay. I think I understand what this item is.
It's a Velcro strap. I think. Okay. Jeez.
Oh my goodness. Ryan, this is for you. I was going to give it to John, but I, but creatine monohydrate.
And this is for John. It's like a let's see. It's a, it's a tourniquet.
Okay. It's a tourniquet. Is it a tourniquet? It's a tourniquet. Yeah.
It's a, it's a gen gen seven CAT tourniquet. Okay. All right. Let's see, John, you're up first since last time. Ryan was up, right? Yes. Right.
I went first last time. So as we all know, there's life in the blood. There can not be any life apart from the blood that is given, but the blood that I have within me, it's all that I have.
So I don't have blood that I have within me. It's all that I have. It's precious. It's got new life in it, but I want to keep it. Right?
Sure. So something like this, the word of God, it helps to keep that life inside of you. There's so many forces outside of us, like a gunshot wound or a stab wound or something that just wants to take your life away.
These are all metaphorical, by the way, these are not real things, but they're real things that come against us in that life. Wrap yourself with the word of God and the life that God gives you is going to stay inside. It's going to stay on the inside where it really counts and where it can be edifying my body. If my blood comes out, there's nothing that it can, it can't help anyone right there. But if it's within me, it can help me.
It can sustain me. And it can build me into the Christian that God wants me to be. Well done. So one thing I've learned from seminary, which is not a good thing to learn is that what you're saying doesn't have to make sense. You just have to speak with the right case. Yeah.
Unfortunately, that's the lesson that I learned. Yeah. Sometimes pastors and professors do that. And it's, it's like, Oh yeah. Oh, wow. Okay. Yes.
But inside you're thinking, what did he do? You broke all the laws of exegesis, expository preaching. I don't know. I'm not sure where we're going with this, but yeah.
Okay. One to 10. What would you give that ex tempore preaching? I would give it, I would give it an eight. That's that's high praise. Yeah. That is really high praise. Yeah.
I would give it an eight. Okay. But let's, let's evaluate because he's getting a lot of time. Yeah.
I will evaluate afterwards. Okay. So creatine monohydrate. What do you use creatine for? Keep water in your cells to build muscle. Yeah.
Keep water in your cells to build muscle. Right. Can you build muscle without taking creatine?
Yeah. I mean, you can, but creatine is meant to help you. Right.
Creatine is meant to help you. Right. So our goal in the Christian life is to grow in our faith, building muscle mass or building spiritual muscle mass. And we can do that on our own, but we're not as competent. We're not as capable of doing it on our own. We need to bring alongside tools to help us. And much like creatine will help you build physical muscle mass, the word of God, people coming alongside you, trusted mentors that you can sit under and listen to their preaching that will help you build spiritual muscle mass much faster. And then the goal then when, once you build that muscle mass is that you impart your knowledge to someone else. That's the cycle of the Christian life.
Like Paul did with Timothy. We do with those around us. Yeah. Yeah.
It's pretty good. I would say it comes with a warning though. Like be careful with creatine.
Like, like this is not even in the thing. Just like be careful with a lot of water. Yeah. Drink a lot of water.
Drink lots of water. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, so I get to evaluate this. Okay. So I would, uh, I would also give it eight and eight.
So, so what is it that would keep it from going to a nine or a 10? And I think Ryan and I talked about it yesterday. In every message you have to bring in Jesus. Yeah. Oh, good point. Yeah.
If I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw peoples to myself. And, and I remember, should I even share this or not? Yeah.
Go for it. We'll cut it if we don't like it. No, I mean, okay. I'll say it.
I'll say it. Sometimes, you know, you take preaching professors. Oh yeah. I know what you're saying. And, and I hate to say it, it ruined my preaching for a while.
Yeah. I had to sort of, uh, get it out of my system. The idea that you have to have these universal truths, faith statements, and you just have to tell people to trust God's statement. Some, that was some of the best advice you gave me. Cause I actually took the same professor, not for preaching. I didn't take it for preaching.
I took it for just communication, how to speak. Right. But I remember coming to you, this was years ago.
This was like 2015, 2016. And I remember you telling me like, Hey, look, some of what he says is going to be okay. Don't listen to a lot of it. Right.
And it truly, I remember sitting in class and listening to it through that lens. And I was like, Oh, you know what? I don't like that. I don't think that's really the way that we're, that we're doing things.
Yeah. And it's because of that very thing, because, uh, what he was saying and what, not just him, cause he's a great person otherwise, but other, uh, professors as well. They want you to have this, this timeless truth that you are teaching people. And I'll go and tell you, your sermon will not have power.
It cannot have power. The power comes in and I hope there are pastors listening who can amen me. I hope there are Sunday school teachers listening. I hope there are just lay people who are listening this and go, wow, that's, that really helps me. Power comes through Jesus Christ.
That's right. And if your message does not explicitly mention him or drives people towards him, you, you are giving, uh, something that is empty, lifeless, and it's not going to ultimately help you. It will be like, and the moment feels like, wow, that's really awesome. And then ask again in about a couple of days, a month, a year, and that sermon is no longer as impactful as it was. And correct me if I'm wrong, but what you're saying is, cause there's a lot of pastors who would say, but I talk about God all the time. I talk about the Holy Spirit and then I'll, I might even mention the cross here and there, but what you're saying is the power is through Jesus Christ specifically. That's how, that's how God gives us his power. And again, I'm not trying to say that, okay, listen to me, the master teacher, none of that. It's a principle. It's not necessarily, you know, just relegated to me.
It's not just, I don't own the copyright to it. This is the principle that Jesus gave. If I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all peoples to myself. So if I were to preach the one with the, with the tourniquet, tourniquet, I would begin with the life is, is in the, in the blood. And Jesus, his blood is, is the one that gives us life. My blood, I need the tourniquet to keep it in.
His blood flows and keeps flowing and does not need a tourniquet. So immediately you put it on Christ because his blood is still changing lives. It's still life-giving. If I were to go to creatine, again, I would bring it back to Jesus. As you take this creatine, your muscle grows as you feed upon Christ, you also physically.
So anytime we have an opportunity to message, that's the big question. There are times I preached a great message and walked away feeling something wasn't right. Something wasn't right. What was not right? And hundred percent of the time, the something was, I failed to bring people back to Christ. Wow.
It was, it was good otherwise. Even the book of Proverbs, you can preach. Those Proverbs are just wisdom statements. But if you don't somehow tie them back and weave it back, that in Christ, you have that wisdom. He is the wisdom of God. If you don't do that, then what's going to happen is that is just no different than some other pithy statement made by the Chinese or the Indians or the native Americans or some other people. Oh, ancient wisdom.
How long does that last? Amen. Yeah. How, how common of a problem do you think this is?
Like how, like how widespread of a problem do you think this is that in modern day preaching, Jesus is either not mentioned enough or not mentioned at all? A lot. Really? A lot.
Wow. And even among people that you would think, oh no, they are solid biblically, man. They are conservative. They're Bible believe. Even they do that because they're preaching the Westminster confession. And that's great. But tie every single thing back to Jesus Christ. If you don't do that, it's, I don't care what confession it is. I don't care what creed you're preaching.
It's lifeless. It's so good. It's so helpful for those of us who teach from the Bible. I mean, to, to think with that mindset, to think of that framework, everything that you're saying, no matter where you are in scripture, point it back to Christ.
Yeah. You can be talking about end times, but if it doesn't come back to Christ, you could be talking about ecclesiology, how churches laid out. It has to go back to Christ. You could be talking about marriage has to go back to Christ. You could be talking about parenting has to go back to Christ. Anger issues, go back to Christ. Salvation, go back to Christ. Trinity. Angels go back to Christ.
I don't care what it is. It has to go back to Christ. I think this is, I think this is a hundred percent what God wanted us to talk about today. Cause look at what the verse of the day is. The verse of the day. You want to read it?
Yeah. The verse of the day is John 15 verses five and six. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit for without me, you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and has withered and they gather them and throw them into the fire.
And they are burned. You know what? I got to say, I've given out a hand of applause for myself. I've given out a hand of applause for Ryan, for Dr. Shah, but right now I just got to give it up for God for giving us that verse.
That was, that was really cool. And that worked out perfectly. I think that's what God wanted us to talk about it because there's somebody there who is listening right now, driving down the road, somebody there who's watching on pray.com or on YouTube, or on our Clearview app. And they are saying, why is my Christian life struggling?
Why do I feel that something is missing? What is missing is Jesus Christ. That's right. That's a good thing. I'm glad you brought that up. Cause I think it also ties into what we've been talking about through Romans. You know, we're not taking a break from Romans today. I think this actually goes perfectly into what we've talking about with Romans. Cause a lot of people would see these conversations and hear these messages that you've been preaching and be like, man, Dr. Shah really loves doctrine.
He's really into that kind of stuff. Those guys at Clearview, man, they just really love doctrine. And yes, I mean, we should love doctrine. That's important. But the goal isn't to have fun conversations. The goal is like this doctrine directly impacts your life. It impacts how you live day to day.
And so, and I think what Dr. Shah is saying is true. So many Christians are looking at their own lives. They're unsatisfied. They're unfulfilled.
And they're like, what is it? Maybe I just have to obey more. Maybe I just have to believe more. Maybe I just have to immerse myself more. And all those things are true, but man, what are you believing in? What are you immersing yourself in? What am I missing?
I can't figure it out. Try Jesus. Try Jesus. Because the goal of the Christian life is to bear fruit unto God. I'm not saying the goal of life, the goal of the Christian life, once you are in Christ, once the Holy Spirit is guiding you in, in sanctification, right?
Positionally you have it. There's nothing that God says you have to earn it. It's it's yours, but now work out what has been worked in, which is the progressive experiential part of sanctification. Ultimately you will receive the perfection that God has for you. But in the meantime, as you are growing through the ups and downs of life, as the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus is counteracting the law of sin and death, you are to bear fruit unto God.
That's right. Because once we go back to Romans chapter seven and, and look at verse four, it says, therefore, my brethren, you also became dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God, bear fruit to God. And then again, in verse five, for when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. So there is a bearing fruit to death. And then there's a bearing fruit to God. So you don't bear fruit either way. Either way, you're going to bear some fruit.
Take your fruit. Yeah. Exactly. And so then Paul launched into Romans chapter seven from verse seven onto the end of that chapter to verse 24, as to how, if you try to bear those fruit in the power of the flesh or submitting to the law and trying to keep the law in order to bear fruit, it's just going to lead to more frustration. And it's funny too, because you wouldn't imagine that Paul is really referencing John 15. John 15 is not something I even think about when I'm in Romans. Cause I'm like, Oh my goodness, this dude is bogging me down with so much doctrine, but he's saying here. So eloquently what Jesus said, so simply like, if you aren't, if you're not in me, you're not going to bear fruit to God. I would say it a little differently.
I would say Jesus gave it sort of in a germ form. Okay. Right. Like, like in a, in a cell form, like this is what is coming, but I cannot go much more because you're not ready to receive it. What are they facing? Think about those disciples at the moment Jesus is teaching them John 15, they are confused. They're not sure what we're doing in Jerusalem. Now I'm we're hearing rumors that, that something is going on.
Something is up. They may come after they may come after Jesus. So we don't want him to be here. We try to talk him out of it, but he still wants to go to Jerusalem.
This is not going to end well. That's so for him to sit down and say, let me tell you guys how to live the Christian life. The law of the spirit of life in Christ. Jesus is going to free you from the law of sin and death.
Can I go to the bathroom? I mean, they're not ready for that message. So God, Jesus has to say one day the comforter is coming. He's going to teach you all things that I have commanded you. And so Paul under the power of the Holy Spirit gives us the rest of the instruction. The more fully fleshed out version that they're not ready for because they're not focused on the immediate danger or they're not, they're more mature in their understanding.
Oh yeah. That's crazy because I would never consider the book of Romans, Paul writing that to be a fulfillment of Jesus's prophecy, I guess. I don't know if he's prophesying that the Holy Spirit would come.
Would you consider that? I would say, and it's not just Romans. If you see in, in this series at Clearview, we're focused only on Romans and it's for a reason, because if we were to branch out into Galatians or Colossians or even Philippians, I mean, we would be in the series for a couple of years because there are so many passages that talk about this life in Christ. If you were to go further into Peter's letters or John's epistles, it's going to be forever. If you were to branch out and go into the Old Testament, where it talks about what it means to live in God, which is really live in Christ, we will be here for a year. So purposely we prayerfully with consulting our team, decided to stay in Romans just to be able to contain the messages to about a 40 minute or 35 minute period.
But it helps to do that though. I think it keeps, it keeps the messages focused, but it also opens the door for future projects. Like I would love for this series on Romans that you're doing to become a book one day.
I would love for it to become a documentary. Maybe it'll become one of our 30 day devotionals, or maybe it'll become a scholarly resource, but I think you, you have the right of it because I also think that God is speaking to you directly through Romans. You know what I mean? And I know, yes, you can always bring in other passages to support it, but it's been cool for me to fall in love with the book of Romans. Romans was a book that I always considered like, this is basic.
Yeah. And it is basic. It's in the, it's foundational. Christianity 101.
Right. It's foundational, but that doesn't make it easy. They don't make it like simplistic. Well, even in the messages, I mean, you said that there's so much that we're just not delving into because we don't have time to, we don't have time to explore all of the intricacies and all the depths. This is very much a sort of an overview, but, but in a deep, a deep dive in some ways where we're kind of focusing on these, these doctrines that lead us to end times prophecy and it's helped people tremendously grow in their faith, grow in their knowledge of not just in times prophecy, but of what the Bible holds for Christian living. Well, that's the, that's the good part of having this show and maybe Dr. Shaw, you can kind of kind of weigh in on your thoughts on it as well. But I feel like it's like this show is where we get to say and talk about the things that you didn't get cancer in a sense.
Yeah. You have 35 minutes to do your sermon, you know, and then you have to move on to the next one, but on a daily talk show, you can kind of dive into things that you didn't get a chance to flesh out. And so for people listening to the show, it's like, Oh my goodness, these guys have been in Romans for like two months. And it's like, yes, but that's genuinely how long it takes to go through everything Paul is trying to say.
Absolutely. That's why we spend time here. And I love the questions that you guys ask because they help me answer some of those questions that I have already answered, but no time to put it in a sermon form in that 40 minute period on Sunday morning or Saturday night. So going back over here, so bearing fruit is essential. Bearing fruit is a must, but bearing fruit cannot happen unless we are in Christ.
When we truly understand that we live this life as the Holy spirit enables us and he counteracts sin and death. And in the process we are able to bear fruit. So, sometimes people don't understand how to follow Paul's logic in Romans six, seven, and eight. So Romans six is the Christian life, death, burial, resurrection with Christ. Romans seven is bearing fruit, at least in the opening. But then if you're going to the wrong strategy to bear fruit, you're going to bear fruit to death. So what is the right strategy?
Well, here it is. You have to come to the end of yourself and realize that you're going to all these wrong sources that are not able to help you. Now, once you realize that and you go, Oh, wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death? Remember there's a fruit bearing to death. So who will deliver me from this body of death, which keeps bearing fruit to death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. And then Romans chapter eight begins with the introduction to the Holy spirit mentioned 19 times in Romans eight, as we've been talking about. And then, uh, we, we come to the first portion of Romans eight, where it talks about, um, living according to, if you live according to the flesh, you will set your minds on things of the flesh. But if you live according to the spirit, the things of the spirit, and then we move further along. And in verse 14, for as many are as, as are led by the spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Sons of God, what Paul calls sons of God, Jesus calls branches. Okay. Okay. Right. Yeah. So you see how, how, how they are derivative derived from, cause you know, my son is in a sense derived from me and my wife.
I mean, we use languages like that with a family tree. Right. And so also a branch is derived from the vine. Yes.
Yes. Let's see how, how these things are just parallel and they are teaching the same truth, but in a different way. We're getting into bad radio now. Cause now my mind is actually turning. And so I'm not, I'm, I have nothing to say because you got some songs in your mind, but also it's like when you, when I started to understand something, I like to get quiet for a little bit and soak it in.
But then I see the ticking clock and I'm like, Oh, I got to talk. Well, here's where I'm going with this. All these truths are important. Maybe we can cover it in next show and go a little further into this, but here's the problem. What will keep us from truly enjoying these truths in our Christian life? Well, one is ignorance.
If you don't know this, you cannot enjoy it because you're not going to know what to do. That's what we're teaching. That's why we're preaching all this. That's why we're writing this. Secondly, unbelief. Cause I can say this all day long, but if you're refusing to place your faith in these facts or you're putting the wrong faith, then this is not going to work. It's not going to make a difference. That's right.
And the third is action. You have to step out in obedience and start living this Christian life. If you don't do that, you may understand the truth, but either because of unbelief or refusal to act, you will miss the truth by, I would say, trillions of miles.
Like, like, like get into space and go in complete opposite direction. So I'm going to read something for you here and I hope you will enjoy it. This is a person who's talking about this John 15 and I want you to get it, see how, how beautiful it is. So the person says, let's see, the history of peoples teaches us the necessity of union with Christ. When we consider also the history of individuals, when we consider the nature of man, it is true that we always see a spark of divinity in his breast. A passion for what is good is striving for knowledge, a yearning for truth, but the sparks of the eternal are extinguished by the flames of desire, covetousness. We've talked about that extensively.
This person is right on. Enthusiasm for virtue is drowned by the tempting, tempting voice of sin. It is scorned as soon as life has made us feel its full power. The striving for knowledge is supplanted by a base, striving for worldly goods, covetousness, right? The longing for truth is extinguished by the sweetly flattering power of lies. And so there stands man, the only being in nature, which does not fulfill its purpose.
Wow. The only member of the totality of creation, which is not worthy of God who created it, but that benign creator who could not hate his work. He wanted to raise it up to him. And he sent his son through whom he proclaimed to us. Now you are clean through the word, which I have spoken unto you talking about John 15, three abide in me. And I knew John 15, four, having the scene, how the history of peoples and a consideration of individuals proves the necessity, prove the necessity of union with Christ. Let us examine the last and surest proof, the word of Christ himself. Nowhere does he expresses more clearly the necessity of union with himself than in the beautiful parable of the vine and the vine and the branches in which he calls himself the vine and us, the branches, the branch cannot bear fruit of itself. And so Christ says without me, you can do nothing.
He expressed expresses this still more strongly by saying, if a man not abide, if a man abide not in me, which is John 15 verses four and five and six, one must however, understand this as applying only to those who have been able to learn the word of Christ, for we cannot judge of God's decision in regard to such peoples and individuals, since we are not capable even of grasping it. I can keep reading on and on. I mean, that beautiful, gorgeous. I mean, this is amazing.
I set you all up. Who wrote this? I don't know who wrote this. Karl Marx. Really?
The founder of communism. No way. Why? Hold on one second.
I used to have a boo on here. Wait, wait, wait. Yeah.
I mean, for real. Yeah. This is Karl Marx. Yes, exactly. Karl Marx wrote that?
You set me up for sure. What I want to understand is that you can understand this truth, but if you refuse to place your faith in this truth and refuse to act on this truth, you're no different than Karl Marx. Unbelievable. So close to the truth and he got it and yet he missed it. I don't even know what to say. Yeah.
I have no clue how to even end this episode. I mean, I can keep on and on, but, but I mean, he is like, just like we talked about our, our pick it up and preach Christ, Christ, Christ. He got it.
And yet he missed it because of unbelief and refusal to obey. Wow. Wow. We got to, we got to unpack that more.
Man, if I had a mic drop moment. Wow. Yeah. I don't, I got no clue how to, I don't even know if I can continue.
Man. I know you guys were impacted by that. Write in and let us know how that impacted you.
