Gary was back before Andrea and I began having children that I heard about homeschooling and how some parents were taking charge of the education of their children. You remember those days occurs when our children came along. No one was talking about homeschooling our daughters before 55 hours is 51. No more talk about homeschooling. In those days that I do remember when it your people begin to move into buffets and maybe our author can tell us what your all that come started, but you're right.

I know that a lot of people are homeschooling today and a lot of others are contemplating it so I am excited about our conversation today.

I am to me and reduce our guest Jamie Erickson.

She taught elementary school before becoming a mom when her first child turned five. She made the decision to homeschool her daughter for more children followed and she homeschools all five of them. Jamie is the founder of the unlikely homeschool and popular education blog or website, social media channels and blog encourage and equip a growing tribe of more than 50,000 homeschooling mothers around the world. She's written for a number of homeschool publications. Also, cohost of the mom to mom podcast and are featured resource today is homeschool bravely, how to squash down trust God and teach your child with confidence you can find out more at Jamie welcome to Building Relationships. It seems to me that your book is going to be a breath of fresh air for every parent who was wondered if they can actually teach their children at home. It is that your vision for the book really what you practical Heartland with tearful parent walking throughout encouragement from the one the provider you yourself you were a schoolteacher so do you see that is an advantage in the homeschool mom help all the things that I learned way back in college are really very good traditional when you're dealing with a large number of different learning when you're trying to make an education around natural gas one or two. There would be a mom. With the exception of God more than anyone else for my longevity of their education and just something I learned in college also look schoolteacher in the school system is very different from high school teacher. Ethics are very different here exactly what you say makes a lot of sense. What led you to decide to homeschool your children will one day when we were married at the time and we were starting a family approached me heart education. Remember looking at her with raised eyebrows care for him on my kids would eventually come with me. We have been able to keep close another Scripture that we can make our prayer that the Lord determined that my heart began to change the very moment the doctor handed me that little pink on. I looked down beautiful baby girl and fell instantly in love and later when she was approaching the garden out on all the moments with her because she was the person to be around when someone out to experience and leave me with only the leftovers and got began to change my heart and toward education. You know, he called back and it was really unheard-of like you had said in a really count growing up we have with which to call his own, and I think that's really important.

We can talk more about that later, but he was little he didn't want that for our kids.

So it happened when I thought he was leaning more towards traditional classroom education.

I know I couldn't strong-arm he wasn't ready to make the Lord, I want to be filed with me and I feel like you're calling me homeschool like something else though he's not convinced and for the sake of our marriage know where you either change my heart or change that we can come together as a united front and it was after that that doing a little preschool co-op with some friends had agreed to let me homeschool her appropriate law because we were really planning on setting her to kindergarten anyway though it was that homeschooling had come a long way since the early days, and there really was a growing unity already in place and now you only wanted a big advocate going.

I personally know you did twist his arm nor his motor. You know, God knows what's best for us and he has a way of helping us come together over who we really are seeking is his plan for us. Now you say that homeschooling is a chance to trust God, what lead you to say that where you are and glaringly left everybody else to trust him and homeschooling is no exception. It certainly won't be our own effort or our own ability to fruition, will have to just bravely holding out. So, in light of my own home schooling. Each day I'm faced with my fear and and fault and I have plenty of those. And even failures that happen to us, I get them all to him a there your soundboard to faith and think and and that's where the trust that's not what homeschooling just whenever you face near the branches. You stick with me to be fruitful without me you can do nothing to lose, homeschooling and everything else a dependence on God or not. You said something just a minute ago that I want to go back to and ask you if it's really really important for this united flood, your husband wasn't on board. You were and you really felt called by God. What if somebody is listening right now and it's that way you know the wife wants to. The husband doesn't, or vice versa. How important is it to really be together in that and not doing the Lone Ranger thing not right side.

Children are both of our children when looking back on those tearful and validate walk this road already. His own fears. I certainly had my own but I couldn't get the way you have the hard conversation and be willing to let him do my heart acknowledging his spirit and what that looked like a curriculum that I hoped that I would choose and that I thought would be right for my kid to and so maybe he had a different way. He wanted to take or go to be respectable to understand that he brings his own expectation. This whole thing of homeschooling and not just for them what you're saying is the division that you still disagree with you. You allowed when you listen to him that actually brought you closer together and making the decision, although I would primary out homeschooling corporate everyone home listening to the spouse and affirming their ideas rather than arguing with their ideas affirming their ideas and their thoughts their feelings week we cease to be enemies argue about it become enemies here were fighting about something that we need to find unity and soak the right approach girl so just affirm you doing is this that were there any surprises in the flux of the first year early years of homeschooling for you. I like the party line and teacher and teacher choosing the way that your friend or colleague know you're not shooting them, and so I had to do the hard work and friendship to show that that wasn't the case.

I can take it personally or waived homeschool around touting it as a cure-all to everyone else is problem and unfortunately that is a homeschooler stop thank you. I have to recognize that only rooted in Christ.

Nothing to prove would take care of my reputation had to learn to kindly get the opinions of any and listen to the voice that mattered most with the Lord did some further down the road, actually homeschooling nature, we tend to think our way is the best way you want in whatever subject.

No symptoms can be adversarial word. We don't need to be will to let me ask you this question. It is homeschooling for everybody no luck at home schooling Christian.really more of a Christian liberty transfer all of and he is able and willing educational path to complete the plan for family. I think we'd all be a little rain if we didn't, at least not in this area maybe prayerfully all the options and then willingly to what ever is asking us to do whatever maybe getting we think we have any real light of the plan he has for now, it's not for everyone and for every Christian family. I think it's something that we all should at least prayerfully enter and weigh against what God is calling you because we're not saying everybody should be homeschooling.

Obviously, those who are most of them are very pleased with the results but there are others who choose Christian schools reading books groups and are very pleased with what happened.

So we are trying to do nothing for your book is trying to do is help couples who are contemplating or thinking about homeschooling get a better insight into how that works.

So what would you say is been replaceable about homeschooling for you and your family. What's the really thing that you could not do without every provided to a traditional school.

I don't doubt that they would education learning can happen anywhere.

True education is really about a place or even the person imparting the knowledge. It's more about the desires and interests of the learner over there or they learn here and exceptional education is often the byproduct of homeschooling in their way to get optional what and what what what we all time spent together learning and experiencing life together and making memories together and seeking God together in a huge pot walk into our yard and driveway just chomping on the neighbor's crabapple tree school trail of curiosity and discovery that happened right after the learning home has really good and granted us the gift of moment. Everyone happens at the moment come walking up caring antlers, as was the case. Moments that way but I like it because it reminds me of quality time.

You know the five love is. That's one of the qualities and homeschooling about the tension between being a mom sometime being a teacher you felt the tension between the two really hard and formula I provide practical With really important for mom who are struggling wearing the mom to good knowledge that sometimes your days need to be whole hello, and other times they'll be home school if you catch my drift. All things have to be able to recognize the biggest fire and tackle the it's right there living in the tension of both home and school. He how we tension and really felt the greatest part of home education that that our kids get to be our Christian walk. How we handle things with kindness or maybe on the flipside, how we don't handle them later. We have to go back and demonstrate repentance and restoration.

So it's not an easy route to how I'm going to be completely honest and sometimes quite difficult but it's always worth it soon. Willingness to apologize to her children when we don't set the model that we want to send for them because as you say, none of us are perfect.

We hear a lot today about the learning styles and learning levels of children, how you handle the homeschool situation when you have more than one trial to serve shorter undercut tyrannical 10 and I expect everyone to eat it because they're all different differently when I had a baby cure that chicken and feed it might only take a few bite my toddler and he turned and went to meet with my elementary school kids eat properly with a fork.

My high schoolers are probably in the kitchen with me making chicken dinner were serve it up differently homeschooling email for many, many, I try to combine people because only one person with a very limited amount of time and energy, so I have to divide and conquer and as much as I'm able to I combine subject that I have to serve at the level of child and not expect too much for my little one expects quite a bit more from my older one will have limitations and you think for many homeschool parents in the early stages. At least this is overwhelming. So what was necessary and healthy for homeschooling mom and dad for that matter, to acknowledge their limitations and you deal with it and knowledge of God, which is really trying to try to do it all really nothing out of your coat that you can create out of your five love to fish and modeling surrender for your kids, and modeling try in your welcoming others into their community and those people and their talents and their guests to grow and refine your children in ways that you want able to do this earlier in our conversation, but some people are critical homeschooling.

How did you know that how do you recommend folks who are homeschooling no matter what you're doing following what you believe is a call from got here shouting from the curb while you're down in the trenches doing the work that the world doesn't understand or accept solar really and truly went home should be try to you all the negative way for you from calling God in your life you have to make a conscious decision that you're going to let God take care of your reputation.

You were just going to put your head down and didn't need bending work of homeschooling and your children will one day be the proof that this was the right educator teachers yourselves in the school system how you respond to the constant drumbeat. This is all we ever heard when homeschooling came up it was socialization. You gotta get your kids how are they ever going to learn you know to be with other people and they're just going to be loners. Although all their lives, and at the same time. You see, we need to combat bullying in school and meet you what what you say to the people who talk about socialization, 20 or 30 years or cry for Solon even know were in second generation we can either prove alerts turn out okay. Was a classroom teacher. I can't say that weird little schooling socially angry is not going to the classroom and I can't fish I can't extroverted care socially awkward kid. The gentle kids and mild kids that believe in the classroom and there are some very weird people and homeschooling that you I'm a weird person kiss weird is not equal to one particular education and I think because we are at second-generation my husband can be lumped in with those he was homeschooled back when homeschooling was really weird. And no one had ever heard that he has a functioning member of society with lots of community circles around 10.

He follows God faithfully and I think he's one of the good proof that this turned out okay.

The other password is sheltered you're sheltering your sheltering your you're afraid you know you're free to get your kids out into the world what you say. The shelter should look at the work shelter a four letter word. We should embrace that were called to holiness and there will be a time when my kids will go out into the world that they will have to keep firm root ready and forgot the legal challenges across the country to homeschooling families, where are we this juncture. In this regard. While many watchdog groups like the legal Association, and even smaller Association better looking out for the work that they have been over the last 2030 years, homeschooling has been legal in all 50 states since 1993.

Every state makes it easy homeschool.

Each has their own unique mandates that we must follow back because we are second-generation homeschooling people can see the initial fear that society had for homeschooling, 20, 30 years ago have fallen away. Consequently, many of those unnecessary policies and legislation have fallen away as well. The results that we seen coming on homeschooling for goes along fears about what what are some of the typical lies that parents who homeschool could be tempted to believe that might hamper their abilities across the world in the last eight or nine years. I can kind of lump spirit into three main categories number one I'm unqualified and I think the natural retort where the mom you are fully qualified because if God has called you. He will also equip you, and you serve a very big God who will fight battles for you and think you know like we had talked about before that their kids will be geared or socialized, and I think working that unwarranted unfounded fear and think something to be censored if you repairable in my child's education publicly educated. I went on to some of the top ranks of my graduating class in college and to speak on behalf of the elementary education graduate can say without a doubt there were obvious In my education I walked out of that graduation hall some warm day certificate that I was fully capable and qualified to teach other people's kids I knew very little building over time.

You know somebody once said that he is the mother of invention that when your kids need to know some important something I guarantee you will find a way to learning as we all do.

I'm sure he's a little boy, which you may personally have experienced what we might: very hard day go something come to your mind when I say that in your own experience story all about the normal project that elementary working on for weeks or maybe they got on the carpet more computer fizzled out right in the middle of the really hard problem, I can recount lots and lots of stories homeschooling their death and it just so happens that during the school day at my house, when I allowed those inconsequential momentary thing you know my gaze away from the work of readying my kids for God's plan life and when I allow to take precedence in the day that the darkness comes to situations which is all of us every reply so that we cling to the truth that we believe that were doing what God is called us to do and that God is going to overcome all of those might just be obstacles all of will ordered and will be able to be measurably more. Even those really shaky day. The other names for God in the Bible, one of which is to hope in the city tell us what that means and how this has helped you in your own homeschooling ministry, the Lord And Israelite malachite after great decisive victory that he instructed Moses to build an altar of remembrance that people wouldn't forget what they're called at about what banners have been throughout history that the Lord is our banter to clear victory. They go before and behind during some of the most difficult battle declaring victory is our banter high Hill for homeschool declaring victory even before we ever call the day to order really is the victory in her homeschool solicit deep assurance that you know God is with you in this hope in this know my I know that if left at me alone and whatever able to bring homeschool day. Okay, maybe a total flop. Is there in the next doing the work, even my inadequate things that I feel were a total flop later. Looking back I see how God used that incident happening in our day to mold and shape my kids to be more like him. Talked about separation of church and state. What can and can't be done in public schools, but in a homeschool situation. You have the ability to stop on a dime and go a different direction than the math of the English word.

Whatever you are studying. Has there been a time when you like the book walking in the yard. Has there been a time when you've been able to go toward a spiritual lesson with your kids that comes to your mind. All of our life through gospel land unplanned lack of character building all throughout her day.

In fact, one simple little example might be fun and I were reading through tree but not too long ago and we came upon a poem called parts like doors will open with you a little know nothing: remembered as we were reading the poem and memorize back when I was in kindergarten because I had lied to my teacher and that was my punishment. I wanted to play gold in the kindergarten school play. Because I had blonde hair and I had visions of being Goldilocks up there in age but instead I had to memorize and recite Whole and for that kindergarten school program and I were sitting there reading that not too long ago I remember that memory and simple little pollen became a chance to teach my son about the distraction of line on the consequences and he got to see me for who I really am just a lost sinner who needed the redemption of Jesus, you recite the foresight I'd love to hear that people I won't give it a try something like heart doors will open very very little.

I think there and if you please.

That's all I remember Larry at five years old. I like the opportunity of reading the poem gave you to share with your child memory from your own life that probably you would never come to your home had not surfaced in your teaching that really wasn't the point. The point was grabbed simple moment to eat character building training, which traditional teachers wouldn't have been able to do quite as well because of shared some of the most powerful parts of your book you recount how the Lord is been faithful to provide you what you needed homeschooling and you talk about your friend Jackie and how God used her to help you to share the story I harbored here algebra. My blood feud with never got no one mom facing putting my child or homeschooling her all I could think about was the fact that later on down the road. Teacher hard like algebra I knew Holly and I didn't know exactly how it would all work out.

I didn't know how algebra would come to some out in obedience. My lack of will of obedience would have been because I knew God was calling me to do this hard thing and so I just have to step out in faith is really out into the Jordan River and then God parted the waters without knowing he was in control and that he would somehow work out algebra.

Years later I met this woman named Jackie and she was a homeschool mom by day and a financial advisor by later in the day that she had a lot of heart and when I got her was approaching eighth grade for a few years and when my daughter was approaching eighth grade around the time that she would have to start learning algebra blue, I received an email from Jackie and she sent out invitation to a bunch of homeschool mom that read something like I'm thinking of starting an algebra class but homeschool families would your daughter be interested and I cried as I was reading that email because I am a member fear just a few years earlier thinking how algebra new one day there would be Jackie and she really was more that God had for me.

You know my fears and insecurities way back when my daughter was wouldn't miss out on this great friendship because I probably wouldn't have met homeschooling mom Jackie being worked out plan and you know has the cherry on top. My daughter got anyone algebra person was a course in algebra will switch to geometry but is it true.

It seems to me locally that this is true in my own city that there are courses like that where homeschoolers are coming together and having someone who really is good in that area. Teach children the particular class. Is that true, nationwide, or is that something that is just that I'm just observing locally here that you were not all equipped to teach every single thing that you get how and where and when and by whom that important thing needs to be taught to source a lot of things in my homeschool letter that I'm in a class online that my children can take or just recently I launched a co-op where 25 families get together and each of the parents turns teaching courses that they are gifted teaching, but there are parents of like mind share my same faith in educational goals that I have hired children and mentors and even family friends to come alongside me you like your way of your child's education is solely on your shoulder it actually is just such a privilege to be able to partner with others to form a very unique educational course for your child a computer so maybe been considering this but ceiling got to move things that I don't know the presence of oh yeah like suits trained teacher otherwise, everything about everything. The goal of education and feed every bit of wear and munch your child for learning and you can teach them to read and give them a love for learning. You them on a course for a lifetime of learning and discovery.

I was driving to South Carolina some time ago there was a huge billboard these words on children who read will live happily ever after 30 powerful because reading does open up the world to people you know to give a child an interest in a heart for reading not only the ability to read, but hard for it does open the world to them. What about the parenting as a child.

It's really a rather difficult trial and that they been thinking.

I can't wait to get them in school/couple relief. What would you say about that. In terms of homeschooling. Well hundred and 7% have one mom and dad maybe sitting here thinking about you and every single day armrests all to get that child to school by accident that God gave you this child and there's something about you that there's actually something about him that you need to fill in for her or someone else to deal with your putting duct tape on the problem here can ask a problem actually doing the hard work but in doing that, you're really only obey the gospel of convenience. If God has in fact called you to homeschool and and there's some real work that will need to be done by like with everything it will be a refiner's fire to help mold and shape not that you into the person that God has designed and created you to be for his glory and your good program.

Let me ask you this what you hope parents going take away as they read your book I really hope but they'll learn to trust God with their children with their internal forever, but with their here and now. Within moments that they have available to the side of the Trinity used to be this public school homeschool site was going on and it seemed like every time you bring up homeschooling there would be new people coming of the woodwork and it's either or. And I think where we where we are now in the culture, especially in the evangelical culture there is a lot more acceptance of do whatever you need to do with your children's but find the best thing for your children. Is that what you're sensing to Elko well here in generally geared to that sort of organic parenting style, but it also had certainly a level of struggle because with that comes a lot of well do whatever you want with homeschool day and your kids can be wild and explore and they don't actually have to learn because Bill somehow learned through the fifth or whatever. So yes I do believe that with the success of home schooling may be the more mainstream forms of homeschooling has lost a lot of, but I also think that day that there is a level of intentionality that comes along with the program really do hope that many who are considering homeschooling will read this book. I think the fun great encouragement to say this because as I move all across the country. I made a lot of homeschool children and I want to say how impressed I have been personally with those children. They tend to carry on conversations with adults look adults in that I and have conversations with them. You know it I'm speaking now to opposite side of lack of socialization seems to me that there more social than the than many children who go a different route so right. It's a decision that every family must make for themselves, but it has been interesting to see the growth homeschool movement over the last several years. Thanks for being a part of this and thanks for the encouragement given to parent jumping into the homeschooling pool can be a little scary.

Never done it and I think Jamie Erickson is going to be a great resource to help mom and five love you can find out more about homeschool bravely squashed out. Trust God teacher child with five love and next week Miriam Hogan talk about women and their great topic. Looking forward to now before we go, let me thank our action teams went on Building Relationships with Dr. Gary Chapman's action radios in association with Moody publishers ministry.
