It was a little painful for me, I will admit. Had to wake up earlier than I wanted to as well. Man, it's always the days when I have to wake up that I'm sleeping like a rock. It's the days when I don't have to get up that I have trouble sleeping. There is definitely something wrong with me. I've known that for a long time.

It's decidedly unfair, but the response, of course, is life is not fair. And I choose to do this career and this schedule, so I have no one to blame but myself. But yeah, I was sleeping really well and then now the alarm.

But the good news is I've been gambling. I was waiting for a landscaper to come and show me. Well, I was going to show him. He was going to give me an estimate on taking the pet cemetery out from underneath my shed or the former shed as the shed is no longer there. But the pet cemetery that's underneath that space and he's going to remove the pets and the debris and the railroad ties. Weirdly enough, there are railroad ties where my shed was sitting.

Isn't that crazy? I thought they were just boards, but he said no, they're railroad ties. And he's going to level the area that we need for the new shed. And so anyway, he was coming over. I gambled that he wouldn't show up at lunchtime. I thought maybe I should wake up early and turn on my phone, but I just couldn't.

So I gambled, set the alarm and lo and behold, he showed up 10 minutes after the alarm went off. I was pretty grateful for that. At least something went my way on Monday.

That's 855-212-4CBS. I can tell you it was not Josh Dobbs' brightest Monday ever. I guess something went his way. He did throw for a touchdown the TJ Hockinson, but that was it. That was the one thing that went Josh's way on Monday Night Football. As the Vikings take a big hit heading into their bye and he and the offense, it wasn't just him.

Still no Justin Jefferson, but he and the offense unable to gain much traction against that Bears defense, which has gotten a lot better even with the addition of Montez Sweat, who had a sack and a half and a tackle for loss and a couple of quarterback hits tonight. He's been a spark plug. It's been like a new battery for the Bears defense. Don't you love it when you put new batteries into whatever electronic you have or in my case, I've got a mag light, a big heavy mag light and whenever I get the new batteries. Oh boy, does it shine.

It could wake up the whole neighborhood. That's been Montez Sweat. Bears offense was not much to write home about either, but what do we know about the Vikings? When they turn the ball over at an alarming rate, which is what they did to start the season when they fell into an 0-3 hole. Well, they don't win and to have Kirk Cousins under center is one thing. An offense that's built for Kirk Cousins with a Justin Jefferson who has been out for the last month plus now, but you got Kirk Cousins.

Well, you can score some points if you need to dig yourself out of the hole. We did see some flashes from Josh Dobbs. Man, when he takes off, he's very creative, speedy, explosive as a runner. But against this Bears defense that became a lot more challenging. Only 73 yards rushing for the Vikings in this game and four turnovers. Now they were still hanging around late in the game.

Why? Because their own defense managed to get to Justin Fields for a couple of fumbles of his own. Just never could find any type of forward momentum with the offense outside of just the one drive in the fourth quarter. Have you noticed that some of the primetime games lately are just brutal? It's a little bit like a mom who will always see her own child as adorable and cute.

Really sweet and pretty or just a handsome little devil and yet the rest of us. What was that? So yeah, the fans in Minneapolis, I don't know if they enjoyed it on the way home, but they were making a lot of noise. The skull chants, it was loud even into the fourth quarter. The game was within reach, but it was a tough watch, a tough sell. And this is what happens when you get deep in the season and we've had 50 different starting quarterbacks. And a lot of these starting QBs are out for the year, which means the offense is naturally in decline. That is the case with the Vikings.

But man, their defense is better than it was a year ago, so there's your bright spot. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS Sports Radio. We'll get to this game coming up and Paul Allen, voice of the Vikings, will join us at the top of next hour. I really love listening to Paul. And just as a sample, late in the game, he's still bringing all kinds of energy. Even as the game has been devoid of many big plays, if you will.

Even with the four turnovers and, well, four turnovers for the Vikings, two for the Bears, he still can get you to listen just based on his energy and his joy for the job. See what I mean? That guy, that guy will join us at the top of next hour.

And if you did not see the post that he put up at, halftime, I actually quote tweeted it just to let people know he'd be coming on the show tonight. Yeah, you need to check it out. You know how I do the good, bad, and ugly show every year during football season? Well, he's got an ugly creature that he used, a gift that he used to encapsulate what he saw on the field in the first half. And it's even purple. I've never seen anything like it. I don't know what it is. It's a creature.

It's an ugly creature, but I bet it's mom loved him. So check that out on Twitter, ALawRadio. So Paul Allen will join us for the Chicago Bears. Hey, they'll take the wins. Remember, they've got not just their first round draft pick in 2024, but they've got the Panthers first round draft pick in 2024. And the Panthers not only are sitting on the worst record in the NFL, the Panthers are now looking for another head coach again.

Are you kidding me? I'm not a billionaire. I don't own an NFL team. I can't fathom being in David Tepper shoes. But what I do know is that his lack of patience and his inability to allow a system or a culture to develop with a coach that he hired, with a coaching staff that he handpicked or at least approved. For the second straight year, he fires a head coach mid-season. And then he had Steve Wilks. The Panthers were playing hard for Steve.

We know that the response was largely positive for Steve after Matt Ruhle was fired. But instead of keeping Steve, he wanted Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator, brings in Frank Reich instead. And Josh McCown is supposed to work with Bryce Young. Granted, one in ten is nasty and frustrating. But his impatience has created this revolving door where the players, even the guys who stick around for a couple of years, are constantly changing leaders and voices and systems.

They barely get to know the new system and it changes again. David Tepper's impatience runs counterproductive to what he wants, which is a winning team. I agree that this Panthers offense specifically, because with the overall number one pick in Bryce Young, that's where the attention was focused. That was the reason for bringing in an offensive coach.

And I agree, it's been rough. He's not even at 2,000 yards, nine touchdowns, eight interceptions. There's not a whole lot to like about what we've seen from the Panthers offensively, right near the bottom in pretty much every offensive category. But by wiping out Frank Reich as the head coach, and in addition, the assistant head coach and running backs coach, Deuce Daley, former NFL player himself, and obviously Josh McCown, who I just mentioned. All you're doing is hitting the reset button for the next what, month and a half before you then hire someone new. If you count the interim head coaches, going back to the beginning of last season, now Matt Ruhl had been in place for a couple of years. But Matt Ruhl, then Steve Wilks, then Frank Reich, and now Chris Tabor, he's the special teams coach who becomes the interim head.

A different play caller and the offensive coordinator stepping up to make the plays, or to assume the play calling duties. And then you've got Jim Caldwell, former NFL head coach, who's also going to help in that regard. But just think about it, in not even two years, that locker room will have four different guys as head coaches.

How is that in any way a recipe for success? I say it all the time, I put it on Twitter on Monday afternoon, constant change equals constant losing in sports. Point out one place, while we're talking NFL, one NFL team that is constantly turning over its general manager, its front office, its coaching staff, or its quarterbacks even. Coordinators.

Now that's a little, that also creates some adversity. I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that the Eagles haven't played their best offensively because they've changed offensive coordinator, they lost both their coordinators. But regardless, if you're looking at the key positions in a football locker room and on the field, those are the ones.

And if you're constantly changing them, you're constantly losing. I can give you a bunch of examples of how that has happened over the past 10, 15 years. I mean, the Cleveland Browns, they've settled in now right with Kevin Stavanski and that front office with Andrew Berry. But for years, all they did was change coaches and front offices and quarterbacks.

And you can count on one hand the number of playoff appearances they made over that time. Another example, the Indianapolis Colts. A lot of different head coaches, a lot of different quarterbacks over the last several years.

How about the Washington commanders? Another example, constant change. And all they've done is lose under Ron Rivera as much as I like him. They've constantly changed their quarterbacks.

And it's gotten them a whole lot of nowhere. We've seen the same thing in Chicago, a bunch of turnover in Chicago. And granted, they're 4-8.

But they've had a hard time settling in. The Arizona Cardinals, another great example. And this is just in the NFL.

Constant change equals constant losing. And the Panthers are no exception. They've also had this, it's almost Russian roulette now, at quarterback since Cam Newton. And along with Cam Newton, his departure, we saw Ron Rivera leave there as well. Well, he didn't leave by choice. But he was ousted.

And it's been nothing but. New face, new voice, new try, new attempt. And then David Temper gets impatient. And he fires the guys. He wants something different.

And they start all over again. Wait until you hear what Tom Brady had to say about how his career benefited from teams around him. Whether his division or the rest of the NFL. Changing coaches. Really intriguing. I've never heard this perspective from him before.

But it gave me pause. Just really quickly, going back to Cam Newton's final season as a starter. So 2018 was his last season as a real full time starter there. He was hurt in both 18 and 19.

But he started 14 games in 18. We saw Taylor Heinecke for the first time in 18 and Kyle Allen. And remember, Taylor and Kyle both ended up in Washington with Ron Rivera after that.

Kyle was there through, Kyle started most of the games in 19. Cam started a couple and then Will Greer. Following that, it was Teddy Bridgewater and PJ Walker.

Neither one still there. In 21, Sam Dardold, PJ Walker. Remember, Cam Newton was brought in late in the season and it couldn't have been worse. 22, Baker Mayfield, Sam Dardold, PJ Walker. All those guys gone on to other places.

Right? And now, Bryce Young, Andy Dalton did start one game when Bryce was hurt. And that's just one position.

Who have they put around him? They changed almost everything on that offense in the offseason. Trying to come up with some way that they could provide stability. But stability comes in consistency. Stability comes in familiarity. Stability comes when the guys in the locker room know what to expect. Stability comes with steadiness. And the Panthers have been anything but under David Tepper. In my opinion, he is largely to blame for what's been a disaster since he took over. Patience is a virtue.

But I know in the NFL, life comes at you fast and there isn't a whole lot of patience. So the response from Frank Reich, it's not audio, but we've got his response to getting fired. David Tepper is supposed to be doing a press conference on Tuesday morning. We'll hear what he has to say.

Although I don't expect much more than what we've heard from him in the past. The reports out there are that he left the locker room following the game on Sunday in which the Panthers lost to the Titans. Remember, they were in Nashville at Derrick Henry. It's not like the Titans were anything great, but Derrick Henry had a couple of touchdowns.

The defense had a bunch of sacks of Bryce Young and a fumble recovery. And he was heard leaving the locker room going ballistic, yelling, screaming, dropping F bombs for people to hear. So then maybe if we had known that report, we wouldn't be surprised by the fact that he fires Frank Reich after a 1 in 10 start.

And here's your dubious history. Frank Reich, first NFL head coach since the merger to be fired in back-to-back seasons. Remember, he was let go by the Colts in favor of Jeff Saturday last year. That's complimentary football. Captain couldn't say it any better, but I'll say it again. Hell yeah. What are you going to do? You're 1 in 10.

What are you going to start? Feel sorry for yourself? You think something's going to magically fix everything?

No. You know, we lost a close football game today. These games are winnable.

That message doesn't fly when you're 1 in 10, but I know these games are winnable. I know we have the players and the coaches to do that. So we regroup and we get ready for this week.

This is After Hours with Amy Lawrence. And by we, that does not include Frank Reich any longer. I was stunned by this. I know David Tepper has created this reputation where he's relatively impatient, but I was really surprised that this happened in the first year under Frank Reich, where it's just, it's a hodgepodge of pieces. There's not a lot of cohesion yet. And Bryce Young still getting acclimated.

It's been tough. The offensive line, the guys around him, they don't even seem to fit together. But ultimately, life comes at you fast in the NFL, and the head coach is the most expendable piece. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence, CBS Sports Radio. Tom Brady and Larry Fitzgerald, too, along with Jim Gray, do their show on Sirius XM NFL Radio on Monday nights. And so he reacted to the Frank Reich firing after week 12.

So this is Tom Brady from Let's Go. And his perspective is not one that I've heard before. It's like trying to learn a language. You're going to learn English for one year.

OK, great. And you want to how will you be in your second year? Better. How will you be in your third year?

Way better. In your fourth year, better. What if every year you had to switch language? You go English one year. OK, now we're going to start back at French. OK, now we're going to go to Chinese. OK, now we're going to go to German.

OK, now we're going to go to Spanish. It's really hard to build up any of that consistency and continuity so you can never really go deep on the playbook. You can never go deep on situations. So I was a beneficiary of a lot of coaching changes over the years because we were beating teams. They couldn't get over the hump. They were all trying to beat the team that I played for.

And when they couldn't fire in the coach, which in the end helped us even more. So, you know, you think sometimes you're solving a problem by firing the coach. I don't know. Sometimes you do. Sometimes you can create more problems, too. So you really better know what you're doing if that's the case. What about that?

I have never thought about that before. Tom Brady says my career. My tenure with the Patriots benefited because everybody else around us was firing coaches. In an attempt to beat us, looking for an edge, looking for the next best thing, looking for the next Bill Belichick, Tom Brady combination. And as they are firing coaches, starting over with a brand new language, French, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Filipino. Actually, it's Tagalog.

Well, that's what my sister-in-law speaks. They're starting over with a new language, new system, new voice, new leadership, new parts. These other teams in an attempt to strike it rich and challenge the Patriots. It actually helped the Pats.

We don't have time for that. And I know there's a lot of speculation about Bill Belichick and whether or not he's already got another job lined up, whether or not he is going to stick with the Pats through this coming. Well, the rest of this year, but this coming offseason and then into the 2024 campaign, we know that he secretly signed a new contract extension last offseason. But that doesn't mean a whole lot the NFL. Extensions, renegotiated contracts, they're only as good as the year that they're in.

And most of them have buyout clauses or penalties built in, but you're not locked into them for life or for the life of the contract. But what about that? From Tom Brady on Let's Go, it's after hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS Sports Radio. There is more to the Frank Reich firing than just the losing, the one in 10 record. Ian Rappaport gives some insight after the break. And I'd love to hear from you. Frank, though, his comments were made to the Charlotte Observer on Monday.

And I'll read you some of the quotes. It hurts for me, for the guys, the team, the coaches and the fans. There is a heart pounding disappointment in not hitting the marks that we needed to hit to keep this going and try to get it turned around. He says this is probably the final chapter of my NFL journey. That's a quote to the Charlotte Observer from Frank Reich, but that he's not done with coaching.

I don't know. We see a lot of fired head coaches end up as coordinators. It's you see this a lot, this trend. When a veteran head coach takes a new job, he very often will bring in experienced head coaches who also are looking for jobs to be coordinators. So think about what we have in Dallas.

This is just one example. But Mike McCarthy brought in a handful of former head coaches, including Dan Quinn, when he took over the job there in Dallas. And Dan Quinn's resurrected his career after what was, I don't want to say a complete failure in Atlanta, but it was ever really what he was expected.

But with that Dallas defense, obviously the draft picks and the free agents they brought in, but it's been a huge boost to his career. And there's many examples around the league of guys who are former head coaches, including Jim Caldwell, who's on the staff there. Ryan Flores being a head coach who's also seeing a resurrection to his career after he was let go in Miami, and then of course had the lawsuit against the league in a few teams.

But yeah, it's a really popular move. And Frank Reich not only played in the league himself, he was on those Buffalo teams that went to four straight Super Bowls, right? He was the backup quarterback to Jim Kelly for years, but he has been a successful quarterbacks coach and OC. He was the offensive coordinator with the Eagles when they won the Super Bowl a few years ago. And he's the one who was largely responsible for amending the offense to fit Nick Foles after Carson Wentz went down. And so yeah, Doug Peterson, former head coach or former quarterback himself in the NFL, he was the head coach. Frank was the OC. And after taking an initial hit because Carson Wentz at the time, he was an MVP candidate, tore his ACL, but they had Nick Foles step in. They had the top seed that year. And the whole narrative around the Eagles during that bye week heading into the playoffs, so they didn't have to play Wild Card Weekend, is that they were retooling the offense to fit Nick Foles and obviously worked out brilliantly.

So, yeah, I don't I don't love this. I'm not telling you that, you know, Frank Reich was going to win the Super Bowl with the Panthers next year. But what it's a waste of the rest of the season and. I don't know why this would be attractive other than the money now Frank is expected to have about twenty five million dollars still paid to him. So there's that he doesn't need to work, but he clearly loves coaching. But why would this be a popular destination for any coach or any free agent when it's it's nonstop change and transition? And it's it's obviously a losing culture like what they built under David Tepper, no shot of winning for a head coach. It's there's only so many of these jobs and you get paid a lot of money. That's basically what it is, because this is not a good situation.

And unfortunately, he's had David Tepper's trending in the Daniel Snyder without all the other chaos that we know of in that realm of constant change, constant turnover, constant tampering. Just getting your hands meddling in what's going on in the football direct. You can't be involved in the day to day what's going on on the football side. If you're an owner, you just can't because there's too much going on. And no matter what, I don't care what you think, you know, or what no owner has ever been a coach or a player like you are not involved in the day to day. Anyone you hire is going to be smarter than you when it comes to the actual football.

Hire the people that you feel comfortable with. Stay out of their way. When you don't think that it's working, then you step in and move on to someone else that you feel more comfortable with. But if you're going to be involved in the day to day, it is never going to work out because if you have a disagreement, you'll always win and then it'll be on the coach to try to salvage your mistake. It doesn't work. It never will work.

It's never worked before. Okay, I got a question. You can think about this for next hour. Who are the worst owners in pro sports? Again, you make a good point. There's only so many jobs. Same thing with the NBA. Only 30 teams, you take a job because you never know if you're going to get another shot. And once you get in the arena, meaning the larger arena of the NBA head coaching, well, there's at least a foot in the door and someone else may hire you. But you got to get that first experience.

So you're right. Very few guys would turn down jobs. Though Ben Johnson decided to stay with Detroit this year. For a year, it's different if you're like the hot coordinator. If you want to hang for an extra year. You talked about Dan Quinn.

He stayed. He could have possibly had a job last year. It's possible to stay for a year or so. When you're a guy that's never had a head coaching job, it's hard to pass up, especially if you don't know if another one's coming. And really, it's also generational money. Look, coordinators jobs get paid well, but there's a difference between $25 million guaranteed and a million. So I can understand why guys would take the job regardless. And it's also arrogance and stubbornness.

I can make this work. But there are some owners that you've got to think, oh man, do I really want to work there? Or is that going to be longevity? Probably not.

I'm sure there are fans all over the country that are going to be like, my owner's the worst! But I want to know. You're right. But even think about it with Snyder. Look at some of the big names that he got to come there. I mean, Marty Shatner, Mike Shannon.

He had some monster names that walked in the door. Oh no, we could fix this. We could change this. Apparently not. We can get paid though for the short time.

That's definitely part of it too. Who are the worst owners in pro sports? The worst owners in pro sports. We'll put up a post.

Jay, why are you laughing in there? No, there's going to be a lot of responses I'm sure for this one. Oh, I think we might have one fan of every single franchise. Except I don't want to hear one Patriots fan say Bob Kraft is the worst. Stop it. I'm trying to think of the best owners in sports.

I can think of a few. But yeah, we're going to have pretty much everybody on the planet riding in. But on our show Twitter, After Hours, CBS, Jay will put up a post. And I'm voting for David Tepper. Just kidding.

All in. They go all in this offseason. David Tepper decided, hey, we're going to get the quarterback we want. And the reports are, now you can take everything you hear on the interwebs with a grain of salt, but the reports are that he's the one who wanted Bryce Young. That Frank Reich actually preferred CJ Stroud. But he's the one that wanted Bryce Young. And what David Tepper says goes.

You can Google it if you want. And like I say, take everything that you hear and read on the internet with a grain of salt. But that is the report that this was not Frank Reich's preferred choice at quarterback. Not that he isn't giving it his all. But nine touchdowns, eight picks, a handful of fun bowls. The offense is one of the worst in the NFL. But in my opinion, David Tepper is part of the reason why. In fact, a major reason why. The Panthers can get no forward momentum because constant change equals constant losing in sport.

And it's a revolving door at the most important and critical positions and voices. And for the second straight year, he fires a coach midseason. Steve Wilks wasn't good enough. He wanted an offensive coach to work with his overall number one draft pick.

But doesn't like the progress or in his opinion, the lack thereof. So we put a post up on our show Twitter after our CBS. I retweeted it as well. Oh, Joaquin Phoenix, did you do that on purpose, considering that he is now all the rage again in the new movie, Napoleon? No, I didn't.

But yet it's pretty fitting. I heard from our friend John Kincaid, cancer free now. John Kincaid had a great Thanksgiving and he has given Napoleon a rave review. He says it's incredible, especially if you're a history fan.

So a history buff. Really? That's good to hear.

Which I am. I still want to see Oppenheimer, though. I haven't seen that one yet.

I'm waiting for that to come out. And I heard it's really long. Otherwise we would have watched it as a family a few weeks back.

But yeah, I really do want to watch it because I hear it's it's fantastic. Yeah, I will say it's about three hours. I think it runs maybe a little over. But I saw it in the theaters. It doesn't feel like three hours. Like there's other movies like The Irishman I saw, which is that long. And it's like, OK, come on. Oppenheimer just goes. It was over. I was like, oh, wow, that was three hours. So, yeah, good film.

Only to say the name. I know I'm weird. Anyway, the thing you were talking about from the announcer on.

I'm sorry, I I've been doing other things since I got on hold. I believe the thing is called Zugly. Are you referring to we have a major echo. Are you referring to the Paul Allen post with the U shaped purple monster? Oh, if it's U shaped and it's not ugly. Oh. What's a Zugly? Well, I bought one for my son when one Christmas because I refused to get a cabbage patch doll. OK, so then what is a Zugly?

It's a monster thing that has one eye, a chain around its ankle, all different colors. It was the coolest thing and he kept it forever. When he went off, grew up, went off, he asked me to send it to him. And I did.

And he lost it. Oh, no. Is it a stuffed animal? Yes.

Huh. How do you spell it? Z like zebra. U G like George L Y. OK, I'm going to I'm going to Zugly toy and that's what I'm going to go because the initial Zugly did not pop up. Oh, he's pink or green and green and blue. He's got all colors.

Yeah, those are the two. I have to look on eBay because the ones on Etsy didn't have the one with the right nose because there were several different versions. Interesting.

Yep. Etsy seems to have one with a long green nose. Oh, my goodness. OK, I'll have to go there because I would love to get him another one. How old is your son now? OK, I don't want to age myself. He's in his 40s. Oh, well, I'm sure he'll appreciate that gift.
