I know I made a joke about Bob being the show mascot which he actually heard. Great. We need to make the yodeling pickle the mascot of after hours for the summer. Only for the summer because seriously what goes better with your burger or your dog off the grill or at the ballpark than a yodeling pickle or just any old pickle? Which one? What should we name our yodeling pickle? Which name? How about Hans?

Really? A yodeling pickle? Yeah he yodels Hans. That feels like a yodeling name. Not gonna name him like Barry. Oh Barry might work. Barry's actually not that bad. I kind of like it actually.

Okay if anyone wants to suggest a name for the yodeling pickle here's what you know. He never misses a note ever. He's so consistent and efficient.

He's batting a thousand really. Very stubborn. You could not once he starts going you could not get him to stop. I accidentally set him off in my bag on the way home from work last week and I've I've scared myself a few times with him in my bag so he's now out of my bag and I did bring him so that we could do a video of Barry the yodeling pickle nah nah Paul the pickle. Paul the yodeling pickle. Perry the pickle. Perry? Not Barry but Perry the yodeling pickle. Percy the yodeling pickle.

No we're getting there. Yoda the yodeling pickle. Yoda the yodeling pickle. That that will be tough to beat. It will be. Anyway I guess he he's not real so he doesn't actually need a name like my plants are real my pets are real they're alive they need names because when I address that my car she's alive she needs a name.

She's going on a road trip but has a very bright a very nice fresh oil pan because she had an oil change. Anyway Perry the pickle. I'm going to try on some different names here. Percy the pickle. Paul the pickle.

Right. Poncho the pickle. Percy is I like Percy I like Perry. Yoda the yodeling pickle is brilliant. Yes Yoda the yodeling pickle and actually Yoda is green. That's it I don't know that we can fiddle with Yoda anymore that's that's got to be it. Our mascot is now Yoda the yodeling pickle. That's at least his formal name. Right if we only knew where he came from he's an orphan we adopted him and on that note yes four hours from a mini summer vacation I wouldn't call this some huge humongous summer vacation but I will be out from Tuesday morning through the rest of the week not back with you again until Sunday night so this is it. while we're gonna talk about baseball specifically the hottest team in the game which is the Cincinnati Reds but hot on their heels the San Francisco Giants nine wins in a row for the Reds eight wins in a row for the Giants you've got the Miami Marlins who are on a streak as well what is happening in Major League Baseball so we will talk about the boys of summer in addition we're getting set for NBA free agency and you're not gonna believe who will test the free agent waters oh it could change a lot in the West specifically on the Pacific Coast who wrote a letter to the PGA Tour expressing concern about the merger with Liv you'll hear that coming up as well and I tell you what we always have a way always have a way because the NFL never goes away to produce a fresh version of QB news to offer insight and empathy and a plan to help Ja Morant move forward so Ja's been suspended 25 games we talked to Rob on last night's show and I know it was a federal holiday Monday which means many of you may have missed the conversation it's worth your time it's powerful and it's personal from Rob Fisher in Memphis it's worth your time in fact Jay and I have discussed bringing back part of that conversation for this show so that more of you can hear it I know the rush to judgment and the rush to criticize Ja Morant seems to be the most popular approach to take if my Twitter and our Facebook page are any indication it's actually well it's understandable I suppose considering that on social media people can be anonymous with no accountability so they'll say anything but it's a little bit disturbing that so few people are willing to give him any type of grace and according to Rob it's more than just making choices stupid choices because you're young now the people around him who work with him and know him best they're actually concerned for him that conversation with Rob Fisher may give you a different perspective on Ja Morant I'm not saying he shouldn't serve the 25 game suspension I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to sit out for a much longer stretch of time considering how he embarrassed his team and the NBA commissioner Adam Silver there are consequences to our actions regardless of why we take them or why we make the decisions that we do there should be consequences to our actions especially for a professional NBA player professional athlete who has a spotlight and has a platform if you haven't heard Rob please check it out and we'll try to bring back part of that maybe a chunk of that later on in the show again it's after hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS Sports Radio so yeah we got some baseball to get to we'll make sense of basketball in preparation for the draft which is coming up on Thursday and free agency you know I every now and then I don't say it as much as I used to but every now and then we'll trot out the phrase pre draft pre any draft in pro sport pre NFL pre NBA pre MLB there's no such thing as a sure thing there's not I know we hear phrases like can't miss prospect I use the phrase high price high profile prospect excuse me but there are people who out there who will say he's a sure thing now that doesn't exist these are still human beings and these are still physical bodies that can break down or really heart soul mind will and emotions that maybe don't line up it wasn't that long ago that Zion Williamson was considered campus it wasn't that long ago that the draft lottery was referred to as the Zion sweepstakes and the Zion Williamson sweepstakes and you remember the disappointment I would say for some but because it was New York that didn't end up with the top draft pick going back to 2000 not 2000 sorry going back to 2020 no is the 19 draft wasn't it yeah I think it was the night it was it was the 19 draft I'm sorry so going back to that lottery he made his debut in 20 because he was injured for a while but it was the 19 draft so going back to that draft lottery which took place during the NBA Finals during the NBA playoffs in 2019 so it would have been the summer of 2019 it was all about who popped that ping pong ball and who would win the the number one draft pick and maybe because our CBS Sports Radio headquarters are located in New York and we have a New York affiliate that I occasionally will listen to but even the news stations and the TV stations there was this just devastation over not getting the number one pick because Ja Morant was going to be the number two right but Zion Williamson was going to be the number one and where was he going to go and how is it going to work out and so it turned out that he went to New Orleans or New Orleans ended up with the number one pick and he was going to be the savior of that franchise he was but he has struggled with injuries now when he's on the court he is magnificent his footwork his skill level his enthusiasm his energy but he's not been able to stay healthy okay so he goes to the pelicans and it's never been a consistent Zion not all his fault but when you're injured you can't stay in shape and that's been a battle for him his entire basketball career Ja Morant selected number two again this was really a no-brainer it was going to be Zion number one and Ja number two he ends up with Memphis and now look what's happening and I'm not saying he can't recover from it and I'm not saying that Zion can't become a functional effective player in the NBA but as we approach a new draft there is no such thing as a sure thing the top two guys who were considered no doubters at the top of the 19 draft are away from their team for long stretches of time for different reasons they're trying to find their way in the NBA and now we hear the reports certainly the speculation that goes along with it that Zion Williamson could be on his way out of New Orleans that he's on the trade block so it always blows me away when we get to the draft and we hear about this can't miss prospect or this sure thing no there's no such thing even NFL teams and their quarterbacks it wasn't that long ago that Baker Mayfield was the number one overall pick to the Cleveland Browns and again I'm not saying he can't redeem his career and find a new home but think about the drastic turn his career has taken in the last what is it year and a half actually this time last year he wasn't even a Carolina Panther if I remember correctly it was later in the summer I could be wrong on the exact date but his career arc I mean it fell into a ditch he fell into a ditch and now it's a rehab project though Joe burrow certainly worked out another number one overall pick to an Ohio team even as we approach the draft and and hearing the headlines and talking about Zion and Ja this week just really impressed upon me again there is no such thing as a sure thing when you're talking about teenagers when you're talking about young men transitioning from or young women transitioning from the college game to the pro level where it's your job and the expectations and the competition and the pressure are infinitely higher I don't care if you played at Duke maybe it repairs you a little more if you played at Duke or Alabama or you played at Oklahoma or LSU yeah it might give you maybe a leg up when it comes to dealing with a spotlight but it doesn't mean a darn thing until you actually start doing it and then college doesn't matter anymore so we'll hear the latest from the NBA Chris Paul how did he find out he was getting traded oh I hate this part of 2023 in social media but this is why we have to be on social media because you can't get your news without it or you get your news too late without it top of next hour we're gonna head to Cincinnati speaking of Cincinnati teams Joe burrow quarterbacking the Bengals and Joey Votto returning for the Reds who are the hottest team on the diamond so that's exciting you'll hear from Joey straight ahead who is 39 years old and just returned after 10 months actually 10 months to the day rehabbing a surgery to his shoulder and his biceps at that age you can imagine he wondered if he'd ever return to the Reds starting lineup quite of quite a reminder that in 10 months after he had surgery to repair a torn biceps and a rotator cuff and man he gets out there and right away he makes an impact for cincinnati the very first pitch to joey vato and his second at bat and he launches it way out of here to write third home run of the game and welcome back joey vato that's a heck of a way to make your triumphant return he lined out in his first at bat that was no doubter i mean absolutely destroyed it out of here to write way back into the seats wow the 1-0 pitch swinging a line drive base hit into center field one runs home here comes dayla cruz he will score and joey vato puts the reds on top welcome back big boy welcome back a home run and now a two-run single for vato joey goes two for three with a walk has a home run and three rbi and the the rbi coming at a critical junction for these reds of course they weren't out of the woods yet even with the colorado rockies as bad as they are on the road you gotta play through the final out diez home with the 1-0 pitch swinging the ground ball to short up with it dayla cruz the play to first and that's it reds win it five to four make it nine straight for the red legs but what a comeback by alexis diez when he had to have it oh the reds do it again they come from behind and win another one hello first place you never looked so good the energy of our team has been um building from you know way back but um each day that gets stronger the connection gets stronger the difference tonight was playing in our home ballpark and there was an energy in our ballpark that uh you know we don't want to let that go we want to continue to build on that and it was so appreciated uh playing in our home ballpark in front of the crowd um and we felt that and it it helps a lot and you know we can build on that after the reds are able to escape that ninth inning jam they actually had runners on first and third of the rockies did runners on first and third with nobody out there was let's see strike out strike out ground out i believe so both the runners end up stranded and that's nine wins in a row and yes as you heard on reds radio they are in first place in the nl central by a half game over milwaukee that's huge they continue their run and every time i see the reds they're laughing they've got these giant grins on their faces they're all engaged standing on the top step of the dugout participating and involved even when they're not part of the play and so i love to watch a team that is locked in and certainly winning and the excitement over winning is contagious but then inject joey vato back into the mix and what do you get fans at the great american ballpark who are even more supercharged it was surprising not that i would underestimate them but just you don't expect you don't expect that you know um um i feel the same way towards them and for them to reciprocate for them to reciprocate means a great deal to me so um it was a it was it was a memorable memorable experience and uh it was more than i would have ever expected and as a reward for the fans who were there and saw the homer and the go ahead to run single after 10 months worth the wait if you love joey vato which i do i think he's great for baseball the red specifically it's a fun personality and and doesn't take himself too seriously just loves the game so much and and is a unique cat but after 10 months at 39 years old you got to imagine that he dealt with questions during his time away during his rehab it was a long daunting rehab and um you have your doubts and when i say you have your doubts i mean weeks or months ago doubts you know and and we're in a performance-based game you know basketball calls it a make or miss league it's like batter bench league here and um you have to perform and so um i i want to obviously i want to perform i expect to perform but you know it's intimidating when when you have a surgery like that and you're an older player and a lot of people say that's uh that's enough um i've got to keep going today tonight was a good experience for me i was a special night tonight um you know having one nine back um you know it's always going to be special him being you know being in the stadium uh you can feel it you can feel it uh i could feel when i woke up uh you know we we knew he was coming back and uh special special night and for him to to help us win the game what a great player no really i mean he's he just got himself ready he's so excited to be part of our team and um he's been watching he's been doing everything um to stay connected to our team and then to come back and contribute um tonight it was just a great start and meant a lot to our team um but uh it was great having him out there he's felt and been a part of this the whole time from the very first day of spring training and he's made sure that during this whole time that he wasn't with us but now it feels the way it's supposed to he's back uh a player with our team and he's going to make us better it's as simple as that david bell manager of the reds says joey vato makes us whole now we are extra special and yeah lots of buzz around the reds with this nine game win streak first place in the nl central so top of the hour we'll ask our reds insider what's the role for joey vato because that's something i think is important but also what's gotten ball i think we kind of just found our groove you know we've uh we didn't let the losses kind of overwhelm us or force us to feel a certain type of way about ourselves we just kind of kept on trucking and we got some new youth and some new energy and you know these guys have been doing a great job and uh kind of pushing us older guys to to play a little younger you know so we're uh we're having some fun this is after hours with amy lawrence mike is dreamsticky yes what the grandson of yes on nbc sports bay area we're clicking right now his 10th inning walk-off gives the giants their eighth victory in a row second only to those cincinnati reds who've won nine in a row we're going to talk about the reds or the red legs i've never heard that before we're going to talk about the red legs coming up at the top of the hour at the great american ballpark but yeah eight straight for the giants they're getting closer to the arizona diamondbacks and putting a little bit of distance between themselves and the dodgers actually so the dodgers have dropped three in a row they're going the wrong way meanwhile the dbacks and the giants are taking advantage in the nl west long long long way to go haven't gotten to july yet haven't gotten to the all-star break yet haven't gotten to the trade deadline yet but certainly some cool different i would say fresh and surprising storylines from the baseball season to date it's after hours with amy lawrence on cbs sports radio remember going back to the giants three world series it was even numbered years right two seasons ago in 21 they had an incredible campaign 105 wins in the regular season was it i think it was 105 wins in the regular season uh they dueled with the dodgers all the way down to the very end they won the nl west wrestled it away from the dodgers in what was it the last weekend of the regular season it might have even been the last day of the regular season but then last year really struggled and i know injuries are always part of the equation but there were a lot of people that felt a let down about this team and the way they performed and there was a hot seat under gabe capler but now here they are again clicking were they in a row they're above 500 and even in june have got their eyes on the postseason or at least putting themselves in a position for a playoff spot our team is is definitely believing in themselves and even going through most of the game not having much offensive success there's still a ton of confidence in this group both from on the dugout and in the batter's box or in the dugout in the batter's box gabe capler and the giants are streaking the same cannot be said for the padres even on a night when juan soto hits a pair of home runs they get walked off every loss is tough you know i know those guys they're trying their best um they're trying to to come through just gotta give it credit to them they take great at bats they hit the ball when they need to and they just beat us i love these rivalries and these battles that go on in the nl west the padres though again with a long way to go if you ask people who is the bigger disappointment to this to this point in the season dodgers were not expected to do a whole lot this year people believe that they really missed the boat in the off season in free agency but the padres had all the promise in the world after getting to the nl championship series last year right and falling to the phillies but they're actually below 500 and eight and a half games back of arizona in that west division certainly really competitive far more than say the nl central which we're going to talk about at the top of the hour so yeah going back to the giants and thinking about how they were doing the championship thing the championship run on even numbered years there for their stretch where they were wowing their fans now maybe it's now maybe it's the opposite maybe it's going to be 21 23 25 as opposed to 2010 2012 and 2014 when they were world series champs on giants radio always enjoy listening to their tag team the bay area by the way has got another headline coming out of it and no it's not about the a's leaving oakland and moving to vegas though that appears to be in the offing instead it's about draymond green who is opting out of his 27.6 million dollar player option for next season and he's going into unrestricted free agency i'm not sure this is as stunning as what maybe it seems but if you follow it forward so i'm not stunned that he would try to get a bigger deal a better contract maybe a long-term deal and possibly play the warriors or play another team against the warriors that's just good business okay so the opting out doesn't surprise me because as all stars go 27.5 million is not a lot of money i know it sounds ridiculous when i say it i get it it's it's monopoly money to me and you but it's not a ton of money for a guy who's as valuable as he is and who has as many championship rings as he does what is stunning is if you follow it forward keep going with that line of thinking could you imagine the warriors without draymond steph without draymond those two are incredibly productive they know each other so well i call them one of the old married couples in sports i mean we're wild by nikola yokic and jamal murray but think about how long and how productive draymond and steph have been together so it's not so much about him opting out it's about the possibility that he could actually leap he's unrestricted which means he can take whatever deal he wants coming our way whether it be aging roster the new cba with some of the limitations there anything else you can bring up but we're aware of all those things but we also feel like we're in a great great place because we've got a competitive owner willing to spend and a group that's really tied in it's got good synergy good processes good sound decision making so we feel confident we can we feel
