Have you ever noticed how the closer you get to a busy season at work, whatever your career of choice happens to be, that the weekends or your time away tends to go so much faster? The weekends are flying by furiously now, although I can't really complain because I've got my summer vacation on the horizon.
Is this weird? To have a summer vacation at the very last bit of summer? I guess unofficially, but with Labor Day next Monday. So we're just over a week away from Labor Day. Generally, I labor on Labor Day. Isn't that what it means? I always thought that's what it meant. And I rarely, I don't know how many Labor Days I've missed in my career, but I would say only one or two if that.
Maybe that goes back to my days when I was more of a freelancer. Usually I don't take time off this close to football season, but I thought that I would try it just to reset as close to kickoff as possible to make sure I'm as fresh as possible for what's to come over the next September, October, November, December, January, on into February. Six months. Now it's not all a mad blitz, but certainly September and October are, and even getting into November before things breathe a little bit around the holidays. But you know, October is the only month on the sports calendar where all four major team sports are operating at the same time. So that's October, plus we crown a World Series champion and the NFL starts to get goofy, but let's not jump the gun. It's crazy after all these years in this business, especially working on the network level since 2004, how my calendar now is seen through the lens of what happens in the sports world. I don't even know if I can change that. It's become so ingrained in me.
I'm not really sure that I could go back to what it used to be if I tried. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. I hope that you enjoyed one of the last summer weekends since we've only got one real summer weekend remaining. My kids on Sunday morning in church, it's my third consecutive Sunday teaching my elementary school kiddos. Usually I go every other week, but there are a few of them who are already back in school and a bunch of them go back this week. Their faces when they told me school starts Tuesday. One little girl said it just like that. School starts Tuesday.
I think she's only in third grade for heaven's sakes. But yeah, there's a bunch of kids that were just coming back from vacation too. So I understand that's what most people are doing. Milking every last bit of sunshine and R&R from the summer before we have to fall into a pretty standard routine. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. Sports world definitely tends to spin faster and faster and faster and faster. The closer we get to the start of football and college football kicked off this weekend with a handful of games. Now we've got the NFL on the horizon. And it will be the Buffalo Bills at the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams come a week from Thursday. A week from Thursday.
Let that sink in. People ask me, you know, now and then. I've got friends, whether they be out of town or locally. Hey, what's on your calendar? Do you want to get together? And actually with my long distance friends, I plan phone calls because my schedule is so awkward and annoying at times. And so we plan phone calls, but people keep saying to me, so what about this date?
This date? I'm like, ah, well, football is about to start, so that changes everything. But it's all right.
It's good for business. And I do love football. When you all ask me my favorite sport to cover, it's definitely the NFL.
There's a different buzz, a different anticipation. The hype machine, not only is it real, but it's realistic when it comes to football. Because, let's be honest, most times in the NFL, reality, and I say it's the best reality show on TV, actually exceeds expectations if that's even possible. But think about last year's playoffs. From divisional weekend through championship weekend on into the Super Bowl.
Phenomenal. Let's go NFL, live up to that standard. You set the bar really high last winter and has the NFL ever really gone away? At what point this summer did we not have anything in football to talk about?
For reals, I don't know that that's been the case. So it's another summer weekend in the books, and it's drastically different than maybe a month ago. And that's not just because of the NFL, though it is partly because of that. This is the final preseason weekend. There is not a fourth round of preseason games, mercifully.
We do not need to see any more of these. We have all but one starting quarterback in the NFL who's been named. The player to be named later, we don't have his identity yet. Pittsburgh Steelers. They do not yet have a starting quarterback.
That's the question that will be answered between now and when the season kicks off. We have other questions that don't have answers, but not in terms of starting QBs. In case you were wondering if Tom Brady might actually be reconsidering his retirement, or taking more time away, or there's something for reals personally going on in his life. Well, maybe there was, but outside of vacation in the Bahamas with his wife and family, he's definitely still the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though who blocks in front of him remains a bit of a mystery as we get closer to the season. We had a couple of scary moments for players over the weekend, and we'll talk about the QBs when we get to our extensive version of QB news, but also TJ Watt with a knee injury and left the game. It was good to hear Mike Tomlin say after the fact on Sunday that was a regular season game he would have been able to continue.
That's good news. So for those of you who love preseason, I hate to break it to you, it's over. For those of you who just want the season to get here, I think you're not alone on that island, and now the games that don't matter where players can get hurt, at least those are behind us.
Speaking of alone on my island, can I ask you this question? Did you all see the ridiculous TikTok video of James Harden throwing a multi-layer birthday cake into the ocean? Did you guys see that?
Producer J, you have to find it and Google it and then see if you can throw it up on our show Twitter, although I hesitate to do that because it's disgraceful. But this is why I say island. Am I the only one, and it's okay if I am, who does not find that funny? I think it's the opposite of funny, that James Harden tossed an entire birthday cake into the ocean. Ew. I don't understand when that became something that would be great entertainment.
Not only is he stranger and stranger, but it's amazing. This is what I talk about when it comes to social media, how social media picks and chooses what it gets outraged about. You would have thought that would be something that would raise the ire.
Nah. It's a professional athlete, so he gets to do what he wants, even if it means he just threw an entire cake into the ocean. J, did you see it? Do you think it's staged? Because there was a moment where I wondered if maybe that was complete fabrication. My first reaction is, why did he do that? He's just sitting there so nonchalantly with this huge wedding cake looking kind of thing and just casually tosses it overboard. It's a massive birthday cake. Why would he decide to do that?
Because he's James Harden. It just doesn't make any sense. That's what I mean.
Maybe it was staged, so it wasn't a real cake into a real ocean, but still. Ew. Ew.
I guess I don't know this for sure. I can either confirm nor deny, but I'm going to think that there was potentially alcohol involved. Just ew.
Anyway, that's what I mean about being alone on my island. Maybe I am the only one, but I do not find that funny. So, that's not something we're going to spend a lot of time on from the weekend in sports, but it did catch my attention. You know what else caught my attention? The enormous contract that Julio Rodriguez, as a 21 year old, signed with the Seattle Mariners, and it's got multiple layers. Man, do they work hard on setting up this contract. I'm not even sure I've ever heard of a five year player option, but that's what he's got at the end of 12 years that are guaranteed. It's an enormous contract, but you know what I found out as I was reading? It's the 26th contract that pays a baseball player, and remember, most contracts are fully guaranteed. Again, options may not be, but for the most part in Major League Baseball, contracts are fully guaranteed. So, it's the 26th contract in baseball history.
The majority of them have come over the last few years. 26th that pays an athlete more than $200 million guaranteed. And so, for the 12 year portion of the deal that's fully locked in for him, it's $209.3 million, but it could actually be worth nearly $470 million over 17 years if he meets all the incentives and he ends up picking up the player option. This is that guy who is barely on the scene, and yet the Seattle Mariners are sure he is the man, the myth, the legend forever. So, we'll talk about them, plus a big weekend for the Mariners organization. They induct Ichiro Suzuki into their personal hall of fame.
He's only the 10th Mariner. But it was really neat to see both him and Ken Griffey Jr. sitting side by side on the field for the ceremony. It was a big weekend series between the Mariners and the Cleveland Guardians, leaders of the AL Central. It was also a huge weekend series between the Braves and the Cardinals. I don't even know what rain delays are like anymore. I can't remember the last time that I was all excited about watching the rain. It's been like two months. I'm not joking. I have not mowed my lawn in eight weeks. Eight weeks.
All it is now is crusty brown straw. It's so depressing. Anyway, so I'm jealous of the fact that there was a rain delay in St. Louis. But that's a big weekend series.
We'll talk about Braves and Cardinals, but here's what you need to know right off the top. Albert Pujols has not homered in the last week. What was it? Last Monday? Sunday, Monday that we last spoke about 693?
Because we had a guest on talking about the Cardinals, so I think it was Sunday night was the last time he homered. And so if that's the case, it's either exactly a week or it's close to a week. I'm not getting nervous. Are you getting nervous? No, we're not getting nervous. It's gonna happen. So we'll get to everything in baseball, including an injury to Justin Verlander. You'll hear from Dusty Baker on his early exit from the Astros win over the Orioles on Sunday.
After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. We're live from the Rocket Mortgage Studios. Whether you're looking to purchase a new home or refinance yours, Rocket Mortgage can help you get there.
For home loan solutions that fit your life, Rocket can. The US Open starts this week. Serena and Venus are actually going to play doubles together, which is really neat. I've seen them play doubles before at the US Open.
It's amazing how these sisters work together and communicate after obviously nearly 40 years of doing it. Rory McIlroy surges to win the tour championship at his third FedEx Cup title, even as there are a handful of golfers identified as those who will be bolting to the next live tour event, which starts later this week in Boston. That does include the Australian Cameron Smith, who won the Open Championship in July. So that report was accurate. And there are a few others. I wouldn't say that you I wouldn't automatically assume you don't know who they are, but they're not huge names other than Cameron Smith, who is Australian and is identified as Greg Norman as his longtime idol. So those are some of the other storylines outside of football.
As I mentioned in football, we've got injuries, we've got Tom Brady, we've got the Steelers holding out until the last second. The report that commanders running back, he's a rookie running back Brian Robinson was shot multiple times on Sunday in an attempted robbery. That was jarring.
My mom actually just sent me a bunch of text messages last week. She was watching a news report about carjackings and robberies and how they're on the rise in many major US cities including New York, which is where our CBS Sports Radio headquarters are located. In this case, Brian Robinson was shot multiple times Sunday evening so a few hours ago during what may have been a robbery in Washington DC. Thankfully, the team has identified the injuries as non life threatening. And coach Ron Rivera as well as others from the team were with him at the hospital. Ron Rivera put a tweet out I just got done visiting with Brian. He's in good spirits wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words prayers and support. So this happened shortly after six o'clock Eastern Time. In DC.
And thankfully, police responded to the scene fairly quickly and got him to a local hospital right away. So all of this that will attempt to get to extensively. I always have very, very lofty ambitions for the show, especially on Sunday nights. It's one of the reasons why I continue to work this schedule because I love working Sunday nights in sports.
But it's also a challenge to because it's really impossible to get to everything. Producer Jane I have quite a story to tell you about the weekend. As I mentioned, my summer vacation starts on Wednesday morning so once I leave here on Wednesday morning, I'm officially on vacation till after Labor Day. But between now and then we actually have a brand new. Would we call it a venture. Would we call it a. I don't know a creative undertaking. I'm not exactly sure what we're going to label it yet, but Jay and I will call it a surprise. Actually, we've got a surprise like real undertaking. That was pretty good. Do you creative undertaking. All right.
So mischievous and magical. So we actually have something fun that we are going to attempt to do. I can't promise it will be a complete and total flop.
It's not like I talk for a living or anything. So I don't know really what to tell you about it except it's what you won't hear on after hours. So if that doesn't wet your appetite. Anyway, that's something new we're going to work on before I take off on vacation so that you will have an opportunity to check it out when you have the chance over Labor Day weekend. In case you didn't know, we do in fact have a YouTube channel. This is actually another one of producer Jay's YouTube creations.
Creative undertakings from YouTube if you will. Because this is his baby and I try to play along even though I really can't stand being in videos. I just can't. Part of you likes it a little bit. Really what part of me is that Jay?
Like that one percent that's in there somewhere. Huh. Like the same part of me that enjoys killing a spider when I find one in my house? Right.
You know, you still do it. It's in there somewhere. Just deep.
Buried. Do you know why I do it? Do you know why?
Because it's fun. No. That's not why. Do you know why? No, I don't know why. Tell me why. You're not going to take a while to guess why?
I'll let you tell me. Because you make me. Okay, fair enough. No, it's because it makes Jay happy. And I need Jay to be happy so that he does productive work. Oh, and I care that he's happy too. This ain't no move. And that's not actually in order of importance.
I should have said that the other way. I care that Jay is happy and he makes me. I'll take it. Will you? Anyway, our latest Stairway to Seven video is a few weeks ago. It's now, it's still continuing to increase in views. So it's kind of fun to see you all go to our YouTube channel and check out some of the goofier stuff that we've done. There is some serious stuff there too, but this is a brand new creative undertaking that will be exclusive to YouTube.
What you will not hear on the show. So you want to make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel After Hours with Amy Lawrence. We've also got the Facebook page named the exact same thing.
And then our Twitter is at after hours, CBS, or you can find me on Twitter, a law radio, including a photo from what was a really amazing experience. One of. You know what? I'll just actually say it is a first. I don't think I've ever been to a ceremony like this in professional sports.
So it was a first for me in my career, though I wasn't there as an official member of the media, which was actually way better. So check out Twitter and then we'll post a couple of photos on Facebook. I absolutely promise. I know we got we owe you guys some photos and I took some dandies. Jay, I don't even know where his phone was.
Well, you read a couple of them. Where where was your phone? Mostly in my pocket. Yeah. Living in the moment. That's what that's what Jay does. Although I guess if nothing else, we could have just been like the guy in front of us. Who like literally was on his phone. He filmed. Not only did he film all the pregame ceremonies, which we'll tell you about, but he might have filmed half the game. I think he filmed the three hour baseball game.
All you had to do was tape it off of their local TV network, because no doubt they were going to replay the entire thing. The thing is, he can't really post that or anything anywhere because it's under the copyright of MLB. So if he posts that on YouTube or anything, he's going to get a copyright up the wazoo.
He probably used his entire memory in his phone, too. And at some point actually said to him, can you film that sitting down? So that is also on his video. Oh, my gosh.
Some people are strange. Yeah. Find us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. We're just getting started. It's a Sunday night. It's closer to football than we've been for months now. I know you can feel the great anticipation.
It's after hours with Amy Lawrence, CBS Sports Radio. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back.
We'll be right back. there was a lengthy rain delay, I believe it was just shy of an hour before they got the first pitch underway. And I love Adam Wainwright, a huge fan, so got to see him pitch for a while. Nearly seven innings, so he departed after six and two thirds, gave up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts, did exactly 100 pitches at 40 years old, and at the point at which he left, the Braves were working on a big inning. So they score three runs in that seventh inning, they take the lead over the Cardinals, only to then rally with four runs in the eighth, and the big blow being the O'Neal home run. Always awesome to listen to John Rooney, he's one of my favorites, on Cardinals radio, and we should at some point get some reaction to Cardinals and Braves, both obviously still in phenomenal position for the playoffs, and weirdly enough, this is how divisions work out, right?
The Braves have the better record, they have five more wins, but because the Mets have been on a torrid pace this season, they are still behind in that NL East division, trailing by three games. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio, we'll talk a lot more about Major League Baseball, as well as about all the the latest from the NFL preseason, and of course Rory McIlroy, the US Open starting, but really quickly before we take our break here for the update, producer Jay and I went to the Mets-Rocky's game on Saturday, and I'll just be perfectly honest, what they did before the game was actually more entertaining than the actual game. But I enjoyed the game, not to say that I didn't enjoy the game, we have some funny stories from the game itself between Mets and Rockies, but if we hadn't shown up, we were there three hours before game time, at least, and City Field was already half full by the time we got there, so we arrived early because the Mets were holding their first old timers day in 28 years. They had members of the 1969 World Series, they had members of the 1986 World Series, they had an amazing collection of former Mets, and in some cases those Mets were represented by family members because the players themselves were either unable to make the trip, or no longer alive to make the trip, to be honored. It was awesome, and the crowd really got into it.
I'm pretty sure the crowd was more passionate and excited for the old timers, who then played a baseball game, not a softball game, but an actual baseball game on City Field. I was kind of surprised, I thought they would just be doing a charity softball game of some sort, but no, they actually played baseball, and the rounds of applause from Mike Piazza and Mookie Wilson and Pedro Martinez, he's the reason that I was all excited to get there. He's one of my all-time favorite baseball players.
We'll hear from him a little bit later on. He pitched an inning, and so if you didn't see the photo I put up on Twitter, ALawRadio, it's the first time in forever that I got to see Pedro Martinez strike out a batter. He recorded a strikeout.
The best thing about Pedro, this is how you knew it was not anything real. If you just saw Pedro on the mound, obviously he's not throwing nearly as hard as he used to, but he was smiling the entire time, smiling and grinning the whole time, having this, he was having a blast, and to see some of the more recently retired Mets honor and respect and even defer to some of the older Mets, who in many cases were using walkers or had to have assistance to get out there onto the field to be introduced, it was really touching, this community. First time in nearly 30 years the Mets have held an old-timers game, an old-timers ceremony, and because of that they did not want to delay in taking one really neat step for a Hall of Famer who was watching and sent a message but couldn't be there.
Instead, his son represented him. He is known for the majority of his career in the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants, but he did spend two years with the Mets. Willie Mays, 24, will take its place in the left field corner here at Citi Field with the other greats in Mets history.
From this day forth, no Met will ever wear Willie Mays iconic number 24. That is the voice of Howie Rose who emceed the entire ceremony and then was also doing play-by-play of the old-timers game from the field. They had he and his partner, I think it was Wayne Randazzo, who were set up behind a screen so they wouldn't get tagged with a line drive foul ball. Willie Mays, again, known for his time with the San Francisco Giants, before that the New York Giants, but he wrapped his career with the Mets in 1972 and 1973. He is one of those baseball players that I wish I had seen play with my own two eyes.
So he sent a message but his son represented him there and it was amazing to see not only some of the iconic Mets who were part of the ceremony and they unveiled the 24 to know that his son was there in front of all those old-timers as he was honored. It was really amazing. I took a couple of super cool photos. I'm going to share that as well as you know me, I love clouds over stadiums.
I got a really neat photo of the cloud array over the top of Citi Field and then I promise we'll put those pictures up on Facebook too. So a couple more on Twitter, A Law Radio, plus on Facebook After Hours with Amy Lawrence. So coming up, we talked about this on Thursday night into Friday morning. A civil lawsuit filed against the Bills rookie punter that alleges he was part of a gang rape of a then 17 year old when he was in college. At the time, there wasn't much of a response from the Bills other than a statement to indicate that they were investigating. Well, we now know a lot more information. At the top of the hour, what did the Bills know and when and what steps have they taken?
What steps did they take? We'll talk to Matt Perino, a new guest here on the show from Syracuse.com who covers the Bills. But straight ahead, you'll hear from both Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean as the Bills release the punter Matt Ariza over the weekend. You are listening to the After Hours Podcast. You know you can't win the Super Bowl without making the playoffs. You can't win the lottery without buying a ticket right and everyone wants to talk about that lottery but our goal and standard here is to be the best versions of ourselves each and every day. Take it week by week and go attack situational football. So we're building for that right now. Obviously that's why we're here at camp building this team camaraderie and the chemistry. I think that's going to pay dividends during the season.
This is After Hours with Amy Lawrence. It has been full speed ahead on the football field for the Buffalo Bills even going back to 13 seconds. Even going back to their abrupt and painful exit for a second consecutive year in the postseason. You look at the roster even in the packed and I mean jam-packed AFC and you recognize that the Bills are of course a contender for a Super Bowl.
All things being equal right. So players stay healthy. Josh Allen being the most critical one and it was a relatively nondescript offseason just reworking reloading until Thursday when a civil lawsuit was filed it became public. I think it was the Los Angeles Times that first published the details of accusations against rookie punter Matt Ariza. We spoke about them here. I shared the details that I'd read about and they're disturbing. The allegations alone are disturbing.
In fact it made me sick to my stomach Thursday when I was reading about it and it was hard to talk about on the air as it always is was something of this nature and even through the weekend as I watched the story unfold it still gives me a a pit in my stomach and almost makes me nauseous to think about. So we shared those details some of them on Thursday night into Friday morning and by Saturday night the Bills had decided to release Ariza. We heard from not just head coach Sean McDermott on Friday when he chose and he said it was his decision to keep Ariza from punting in their final preseason game to keep Ariza away from the team. So we heard from Sean McDermott on Friday you will hear momentarily but we also heard from Brandon Bean who had McDermott sitting next to him on Saturday as he delivered his own remarks and explained why the team chose to release Ariza. Now top of the hour Matt Perino of syracuse.com longtime Bills insider will join us. He was with the team for their preseason game in Charlotte and has spent the weekend tracking the details.
It's after hours here on CBS Sports Radio. Again Brandon Bean speaking on Saturday night once the decision had been made. They were accusations yeah and it just it clarified exactly what they were and at that point it's a it's a it's a real civil case it's not a this may happen it's it's something that you have to you have to respond to and at this point we're not the judge and jury we don't have that and we just again this is bigger than football and our culture here is is more important to us than winning football games. You really feel bad for that whole situation and you know ultimately this is a legal situation we don't know you know all the facts and that's what makes it hard but at this time we just think it's the best move for everyone to move on from Matt and let him take care of this situation and focus you know on on on that and so we're going to part ways there. It's not a situation we take lightly I'm hurt I understand they're hurt it's emotional it's not easy to hear about some of the things that I've heard about over the last several hours say and uh you know I haven't slept a lot to be honest with you because this is this is a game but there's other things that are more important than this. The emotion in the voice of Sean McDermott is evident and I can identify with that I know I'm just a radio host I just talk about sports for a living but I've never been a person who can leave my heart outside the studio I've never been a person who doesn't get emotionally invested in my show or in the subject matter as it has been the case my entire career when there are accusations of sexual assault sexual harassment in this case gang rape it's a civil lawsuit that civil lawsuit that lays out accusations against Ariza as well as two former San Diego State teammates all three of them are accused in this lawsuit of rape gender violence and false imprisonment. The last I heard the last I knew and read the authorities are still considering charges the young woman was 17 at the time and according to her account she and Ariza had sex outside a house where a party was going on and he later took her to a room where she says she was raped repeatedly over 90 minutes she was in and out of consciousness she had jewelry that was ripped out of her various piercings and there was there was bleeding there was bruising she did go to authorities she did have a doctor check her out she did tell family and friends right away and at the time she was a minor 17 years old so to hear the details even if you are just so confident this 17 year old made it all up just for the hell of it why not sounds like fun right we'll just go ahead and make up a grand story because the guy's a professional football player now so oh maybe we can extort some money out of him even if that's what you believe the details that she shares and her account in this lawsuit are disturbing and gut-wrenching she's not even been identified because the court system at least to this point is protecting her because she was a high school senior when it happened she was under the age of consent in California and according to her this happened in mid-october last fall it's after hours here on CBS sports radio did the bills know about this when they drafted him if we had this and we get things like this from guys you you know how important the character and the culture is to Sean and me and anything that would have been lingering that would have been off our board what about the team you can imagine that there are at least questions that will be fielded to the team come this week that there were this weekend what did Sean McDermott tell the bills they know um you know this was going on here and you know with all the stuff that's out there and um you know just about the see we talked about the seriousness of the situation and the sensitivity of the situation and and you know that's real at least we did not get a statement from bills ownership or management talking about how many people are triggered by this situation I will say this I appreciate that it sounds like both Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean are struggling with this it's not easy yes at this point they are allegations there are no criminal charges Ariza has not been charged with anything nor has he been convicted of anything and I can understand why this is a struggle for both McDermott and Bean as well as anybody else associated with the bills it is a struggle for me too because there's an emotional component to it thinking about if this really happened and what that young woman went through at the same time we weren't there right and I run into this every time we don't know the truth of what happened we know at this point her extensive version of the story we're going to talk to Matt Perino who covers the bill straight ahead it's after hours on CBS Sports
