Bryan's powerful speech at the 1896 Democratic Convention, in which he attacked the gold standard and advocated for the rights of farmers and working-class Americans, helped to galvanize the movement. Although Bryan lost the election to William McKinley, the Populist Movement laid the groundwork for the Progressive Movement, which would go on to shape American politics and society in the early 20th century.
