In October 1950, during the Korean War, US Navy pilots Jesse Leroy Brown and Thomas J. Hudner, Jr. were on a mission when Brown's plane was hit, and he crash-landed behind enemy lines. Hudner risked his life to save Brown, but was unable to free him, and Brown died in the freezing cold. Hudner was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions, becoming the first person to receive the award for attempting to save a downed wingman.
