We continue this Zach Gelb show coast to coast on CBS Sports Radio. The off-season really starting to pick up and we're not even at the official start of the new league year which will happen next week, right? That new league year, I always get confused now Hickey because you had the legal tampering period and then you have the official start to the new league year. What's the official date for that? That's the 13th or is it the 16th? Tampering is the 13th, the official league year is the 15th. Gotcha. So we're approaching right around the corner to that.

It's quickly how crazy that happens by the way. Like the Super Bowl just seems like it was last week. We've already had the combine. We've already had Derek Carr who has elected to sign with the Saints today. You have Geno Smith re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks in a three-year 105 million dollar deal. We'll wait on the specifics on the breakdown of that and the franchise tag deadline is tomorrow at 4 p.m Eastern and tomorrow we'll see what happens with Lamar Jackson and Daniel Jones. Orlando Brown Jr. today, the chief said they are not going to franchise tag him so he will hit the open market.

We know Tony Pollard got slapped at the franchise tag today. It would not shock me if Ezekiel Elliott ends up getting cut. Maybe they try to restructure his contract. There's been conversations about that but really the two big names that were waiting in great anticipation to see if they get the franchise tag or not is Daniel Jones and Lamar Jackson. Now the one way they just don't get the franchise tag if they get a deal done by tomorrow, I don't think there's any shot the Ravens get a deal done with Lamar Jackson by tomorrow afternoon and then that question becomes it exclusive or non-exclusive. If it's not exclusive he could go sign with another team and get an offer sheet and then if the Ravens don't match it they get back two first round picks and that's the end of Lamar Jackson. I think that'd be stupid of the Ravens to go allow him to to talk to other teams because if you do want to trade him you get a lot back than just two first round picks. I guess the only reason that would make any sense, Hickey, is if they just don't think Lamar is going to get as much as he wants but their latest offer it was 130 million dollars guaranteed. I could guarantee this a team's going to give them more than 130 million dollars guaranteed if and I know there's been conflicting reports but if it's all about a fully guaranteed contract I would think there would be at least one team that would give them a fully guaranteed deal if if if if there is no teams that would give them a fully guaranteed deal, Hickey, you know they're going to be able to top more than 130 million dollars guaranteed so that's the part to me I don't know what the Ravens are willing to spend at their apex so let's say he gets 210 or 200 million fully guaranteed and then there's like 50 that aren't fully guaranteed like do the Ravens match that? Like that to me that that would be the the big question so I don't think there is enough upside here for the Ravens to allow him to go talk to other teams because you know a team is going to pay what Lamar Jackson wants or at least in the ballpark Hickey of what he would want. I am with you and there's no reason to believe that the Ravens would match anyone's offer because again we've all that we've heard is that they are far apart they're really nowhere close there's been a lot of contention between the two Lamar's play is not giving them a reason to kind of go all in or over the top recently there's injuries so I just wonder if you're I guess the twofold is if you're the Ravens if you go non-exclusive tomorrow one is maybe they think the market's not going to be as great for Lamar in terms of price wise that's stupid and the only other thing I think of is that maybe they think the return for Lamar in a trade is not that great either where they can't get three first round which would also be stupid and you just say all right we're going to go with two I would agree with both okay but I'm just trying to logically think why they would say let's do this me saying it's stupid I'm not saying you're stupid I'm saying the reason the reasons like those justify those reasonings are fine but they would be stupid reasons from the Ravens because even if they I think they could get three first round picks but if you want to tell me they can't you would still get two first round picks and then additional picks instead of only getting the two first round picks and that's it that you would get on this non-exclusive tag so just right there that would be dumb but the other part is even if the team even if there's not a team that would be willing to fully guarantee 230 250 million dollars they're going to guarantee a lot more than 130 million dollars so the only way that the Ravens ends up winning here Hickey is if they let him go negotiate the deal somewhere else and this was all a giant bluff from them and negotiation tactic where you go and let Lamar let's say agree to a five-year 230 million dollar deal with the Atlanta Falcons and let's say 200 million dollars of it is guaranteed if the Ravens go oh well he wanted 230 250 fully guaranteed we only we ended up getting 200 million dollars guaranteed so that's a win for us and they end up signing him it's like you made your franchise quarterback go through all that just to end up not having the contract fully guaranteed like if I'm Lamar at that point if I know if I and I know this is part of what the the CBA allows if I agree to terms with another team and then the Ravens match it like I would be annoyed with the Ravens if they match it at that point because they made you go through all this crap well that's the thing too it's like at what point is just the price not worth it where you have just been so set in your ways of this is what we're going to pay you you're not worth what you want for x y and z it's like if you're trying to penny pinch or save like I said even 30 million dollars it may sound like a whole lot of money it's not in their circles but in our circles it is if 30 million dollars can basically ensure Lamar's happiness I'd rather pay Lamar 230 and him be happy then me win 200 million dollars and like Lamar's on the team but he's upset and pissed off and it's kind of you know it picks up where you left off at the end of the year because I don't think this is a situation where you agree to the deal and then it's all one water is underneath the bridge because right it's not a typical negotiation because he's his own representation so he knows all the conversations this is not a spot where it's oh there was four or five things that weren't said so nicely about you but your agent didn't tell you those that eventually got you the deal he knows everything that's happening because if he's not having the conversation that his mother is having a conversation and and you tell me what mother doesn't tell their child everything especially one that ones that have really like I'm very close to my mom she tells me everything I tell her a lot of things like 75 of the things there's some things you can't tell your mom but it's it's one of those relationships where he's going to know everything here where I do think that buffer of having an agent is important and you probably would have had a quicker outcome and a quicker solution to this problem right now or maybe it not getting so nasty and I don't blame Lamar I think the Ravens are in the wrong here I think the Ravens have lost all the benefit of the doubt and I would be very surprised if at any point this offseason we get a breaking news alert watch what happened in five seconds that the Ravens have agreed to a long-term contract with Lamar Jackson I just don't see it I'd be shocked it's not happening yeah he's on the move now I just want to make sure that this is not a question wrong sides offside and it is not does Daniel Jones get a long-term deal done by tomorrow no I think he's franchise stacked I think there's like a 20 chance of it getting done but I do believe that he'll get franchise tag I'm in I'm in the same boat as you now I wonder we talk about the exclusive non-exclusive with Lamar if I'm the the giant I would do the non-exclusive option on Daniel Jones because here's why if they don't now they could still have time to agree to a long-term deal but let's just say if no other team is willing to give him what he wants then you're playing on a 32 million dollar non-exclusive franchise tag if you don't get that long-term deal done and also if you're the Giants who I think like Daniel Jones but don't love him and then you start to wonder like what are the Giants who they lose Daniel Jones which is fair but if he does agree to it to a to a contract with a different team and you don't like the deal and you don't like the deal you get two first-round picks back for Daniel Jones now I don't think there's that I don't know but I would find it hard to believe that Daniel Jones that a team's given up two first-round picks for Daniel Jones but if I'm the giant I think that risk is worth it if you can't agree to a long-term deal tomorrow he is the player not Lamar that you slap the non-exclusive franchise tag on absolutely because also too I think it's a vote of confidence in Brian Dable when you look at what he did with Josh Allen and now the one year Daniel Jones if you're the Giants you feel pretty good that Brian Dable is really good at getting the most out of whatever quarterback so whether it's in the draft yeah if you get those two first-round picks and trading up to get someone whether it's Jimmy G for a year or whatever making some sort of move maybe now making a trade because you have two extra first-round picks I would feel pretty damn good about whoever Brian Dable is coaching they're going to give a good chance to win so yeah if someone wants to go knock themselves out give Daniel Jones 45 million dollars a year and then give you two two first-round picks for it I think it's absolutely worth the risk imagine if a team gave up two first-round picks for Daniel Jones like what would be more stunning last year at this time I told you a team gave up two first-round picks for Daniel Jones in a trade or Geno Smith gets a 305 million dollar contract with the Seattle Seahawks wow um has to be Geno I don't know Daniel Jones a stock was in the toilet Geno Smith didn't have a stock last year two first-round picks for Daniel Jones 105 million I mean you're right I mean they're I'll go more shocking Daniel Jones wow I think it would be Geno but I think they're also neck and neck those are two shocking outcomes we'll do on sides offside coming up in 10 minutes from now but I just want you to entertain me with a quick exercise I'm going to give you a team you tell me if you were that team if you would be interested in Daniel Jones Lamar Jackson or both so I'll give you the team if it's just Daniel Jones you say Daniel Jones if it's just Lamar Jackson you say Lamar Jackson or you could say both or even I'll give you a fourth option neither Miami Dolphins Lamar Jackson the New England Patriots Lamar Jackson I agree with that one because you're not getting rid of Mac Jones for Daniel Jones I agree the New York Jets both I would agree on that um um you know what's funny if the Ravens do move on from Lamar Daniel Jones would be a bad option for the Ravens he absolutely should be on that similar style Pittsburgh Steelers Lamar but Lamar would never get traded in division no so we could just throw out the the AFC North teams uh AFC South Tennessee Lamar I would actually say both for that one the thing with Daniel Jones for the Titans is just that you have to give up a lot I'd rather give a lot for Lamar Jackson I don't want to give up a lot for Daniel Jones which I still don't really know what he is no let me be clear I would not give up two first-round picks if I'm Tennessee for him but if he's if they somehow slap the tag on Saquon and Jones was an unrestricted free agent I would get a contract done with Daniel Jones if I was kind of sick are we looking at Jones as a free agent or if the trade force that does change the calculus oh yeah that's a good point um free agent I would change my answer for the Titans to both okay trading form I would just say Lamar I don't think if you're the Titans where you are right now trading for Daniel Jones is a smart move so let's keep it simple you have to give up two first-round picks okay Titans now so just to recap Dolphins just Lamar just Lamar Patriots just Lamar just Lamar um you said the Jets ice oh that's tough I would probably say both still I don't feel great about it I would say both for the Jets don't feel even though I wouldn't give up two first-round picks for Daniel Jones just for the New York storyline well that and also I truly if Rogers to be fair Rogers they don't get Lamar I don't know I mean Mike White I guess here we go welcome back Jimmy G maybe Jimmy underwhelming but sheesh so and Tennessee just Lamar just Lamar Indianapolis neither oh you have to give up two first-round picks for Lamar they're not ready to win they need help if you could get the quarterback you get the quarterback and then you figure out the rest of the team I'll take a chance in the draft and I'll give up my own capital for an unknown quarterback who I'm not paying 45 million dollars a year on a roster that needs help elsewhere okay Texans I would still I like it with their cults neither all right I would go Lamar um you want to have fun sure let's get nuts Broncos Lamar imagine that if they had they had no draft picks though they have no draft picks no cap space but hey you know what the hell and you could only trade draft I would think it's the same for this culture draft picks three years into three years in advance yeah so Raiders uh we'll say just Lamar if it was Jones on free agency not two first-round picks I would then be open to both big McDaniels calls up Joe Judge and ask him what he thinks on Daniel Jones Joe what's your evaluation here I trust you as an offensive mind commanders oh I would go both here's why oh those fans threw a party for Carson Wentz who sucked and it's in division too wouldn't that be the Dan Snyder parting move could you imagine that they use a non-exclusive and the team that makes the biggest run at Daniel Jones is the commanders and you have to trade him in division McNabb left the Eagles and went to the commanders that he did that he did I know there was a team in between but Favre ended up in Minnesota found his way there by hook or by crook he found his way there I will for the commanders still say just Lamar Vikings just Lamar Jones would actually be fun in that offense how much I mean yeah dual threat would be help a little bit but oh if he's I don't think he's that much of an upgrade over Kirk if at all played well in the playoff game he did do it over you know seven years I don't trust either but Lions Lamar and what about the Panthers Lamar yeah I think you draft the younger quarterback if you're the Panthers at that rate sitting there a nine trade like if you're going to trade assets I'd rather trade up in the draft than give two first-round picks for Daniel Jones Falcons Lamar that's the thing that's like that's where yeah that's when you add the two first-round picks it changes so notice how many teams and that was the goal the exercise notice how many teams you said Lamar so that's why it'd be stupid if the raven slapped the non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar because if you wanted to trade him you would get so much more back in return I mean the Browns gave a three first-round picks about a third and a fifth for Deshaun Watson and then gave him 230 million dollars guaranteed so it's already been done before Lamar would have negotiation powers though in determining what team he would get because he could I think he still has to sign the tag before you could trade him that's my knowledge of my understanding of that so if like let's say I'm sure there could be conversation behind the scenes like let's say if he doesn't want to go to the team then he could threaten not signing the tag until he gets the trade to the team that he wants to but still he'd be getting a king's ransom back for him and probably he'd be getting the contract that he wants and notice how many teams you probably would have considered if Jones was on the free agent market but then when you attach two first-round picks it's like no so that's why it makes sense for the Giants to slap the non-exclusive tag on him all righty Zach Gelb show CBS Sports Radio on sides off side when we return in five minutes you're listening to the Zach Gelb show Zach's taking on the most polarizing issues in sports which side of the line of scrimmage will he end up on offside defense number 69 it's on sides offsides with Zach Gelb on CBS Sports Radio sides offsides with Zach Gelb on CBS Sports Radio you can think about the auto parts for our car care needs get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at O'Reilly Auto Parts all right hickster what do we got Zach we talked a lot about quarterbacks this off season and where they could land just before Daniel Jones Lamar Jackson we did get the first domino of the fall though earlier today as Derek Carr has made his decision he has signed a four-year deal with the New Orleans Saints the nine-year rated quarterback will now team up presumably with Michael Thomas, Crystal Lave and Alvin Kamara on offense and the Saints when you look around the rest of the NFC South do have the clear quarterback advantage the Bucks right now these seem content to start 2021 second round pick Kyle Trask the Panthers appear likely to take a swing on a quarterback in the first round and the Falcons well right now they have last year's pick Desmond Ritter at quarterback Lamar Jackson becomes available and maybe are in the Lamar Jackson sweepstakes if and when Lamar does become available on sides or offsides the Saints right now are the team to be in the NFC South keyword right now yes because I just don't know what the other teams are going to do at the quarterback spot if the Panthers wind up though with Bryce Young or CJ Stroud I could see them winning that division next year even in the quarterbacks rookie year because they have a really good defense I know they have improved that offensive line and you also have DJ Moore so in a division that still may only be eight or nine wins like nine wins maybe gets the job done I don't think that's inconceivable if you tell me that the Falcons wind up with Lamar Jackson via a trade I would consider picking the Falcons to win the division and if Jimmy G let's just say winds up in Tampa Bay I don't think Rodge is getting traded there but if a quarterback like that is serviceable winds up in Tampa Bay that would not shock me if then we start to feel confident with the Buccaneers to just win the division all four of those teams I don't think there will be any greater expectations this year regardless who the quarterback is other than winning the division so I can't argue even if the Falcons get Lamar even if the Buccaneers get Jimmy G or the Panthers even if they wind up with Aaron Rodgers like I'm not sitting here saying oh they should be in the Super Bowl so I think for all those teams the expectation is to win the division once we figure out who their quarterback's going to be if it's something that's serviceable like if the Buccaneers are rolling with Kyle Trask Todd Bowles start getting your resume ready because you're gonna be fired next year I like that's just gonna be the reality of that situation but for now yeah the Saints should win the division because they have the best quarterback in the division and they have a team that isn't great but it's serviceable enough with the defense that cars should be able to manage the game so yeah on sides it's a bad division all right it is it is not good at all like is there going to be any contender in football this year for a worse division than that like the AFC South could be really bad but the Jaguars should be like an 11 or 12 win team there's not going to be an 11 or 12 win team in the NFC South no and the Colts Texans obviously will have first-round quarterbacks most likely so two teams are building the Titans seem to be you know obviously dumping players not adding them so they could also kind of just go in the tank as well you could have an 11 win team with the Jaguars but also three teams that are you know fumbling around four five six wins I guess you can kind of say the same thing about the NFC South too because you look around yeah it's not not great not great that is for sure you know what actually I'm gonna start rooting for something oh here we go I have one wish since coming back from Barcelona since coming back from Barcelona since coming back from Barcelona okay Tennessee sitting there with the 11th overall pick I want them to jump the Colts and get their quarterback oh how great would that we have a trade Tennessee has moved into the number one spot and they are selecting Bryce Young quarterback Alabama roll tide go Tennessee tighten up I'm actually upset the Titans are trading Derek Henry I want to beat that guy please I hate him easy for you to say I'm upset but I want to beat that guy I do I want to see him stay in the division yeah I got it it's what they lost five in a row or five or less or whatever six or seven even if he stays there their team is going to be garbage next year you win one game against them and you're supposed to throw a parade not afraid but just you know your standards are pathetic I just want to beat Derek Henry what are you going to what are you going to say yeah well I'm not happy he's leaving I'm not saying oh you know we could have been so see you later I want to have a chance to beat him again you know I'm very upset about this too well about what Derek Henry leaving or what yeah why even though I've been advocating uh for it for over a year now right you're getting your wish and now you're upset let's hear why yeah I'm upset about it because there is a great photo of the internet of me on Derek Henry's body stiff farming you on a Colts player's body I really can't use that anymore if Henry gets traded that is correct and that's I still again would want them I even know that picture well it's not going to come up again well you never know the Colts aren't I'm not even you know I can't at this point I can't make it three years in a row see the quarterback is first then maybe we'll talk but you are such a fraud I said this a month ago love to wait until the Colts get their quarterback and then all of a sudden hickey's gonna be up here they go here they come they're ready to go what did you say I said I got to see the quarterback is and I didn't even say anything about the titans even with them just ripping their roster apart I am playing I've read this book too many times I've watched this movie too many times I know the ending the ending is not changing you will talk yourself into the Colts being a playoff team next year some way or another this postseason this offseason well they get Bryce young I can't promise you won't be saying that oh any of the quarterback no just please please sports gods anyone but Bryce young to Indianapolis because if Bryce young winds up in Indianapolis hickey's gonna be so insufferable and I like Bryce young and I don't want to have to root against Bryce young but if Bryce young goes to the Colts will be become my least favorite player in the NFL you will hate me 10 times more than you do already that's for sure Bryce young oh but if you get Bryce young boy because you will already proclaim that the Colts have their next franchise quarterback and they're gonna be unstoppable for us I will root against Bryce young and hope he can't see us over the line of scrimmage and hope he's like throwing the the ball into your crappy offensive lines ass that's what I would root for okay well that's no problem he goes to the Titans or he goes to the Texans I'm his biggest fan to breeze to point Jersey there we go yeah thanks really appreciate that very short Russell Wilson short Drew Brees short Bryce young short perfect perfect size probably fine just as long as he doesn't go to Indy and if I'm Bryce young I would refuse to go to Indianapolis I would just look at that organization and say even though it's a different general manager they've ruined Andrew Luck's career I would never want to play under Shane Steichen who's every court he's worked with has gotten the best out of him yeah please I wouldn't want to do that Shane Steichen's on this offensive whisperer no credit to Nick Sirianni hurts no credit to Sirianni Justin Herbert stop Phil of rivers stop right oh yeah happens Steichen really did a lot for Philip Rivers look at rivers and stats under Shane Steichen give me career highs and what next you're going to tell me Adam Gase was it was the QB whisperer for pay demanding well that was a one-and-a-half that was a one-off we've seen it three different times Daniel Hackett and Aaron Rogers different times three different quarterbacks no uh Adam Gase Nathaniel Hackett one quarterback and they kind of were doing it on their own anyway Shane Steichen was probably a year ago that is false he's actually worked with Nick Sirianni obviously okay and he's been on the Chargers for a while a little bit with the Chargers it was like four years five years a little bit a little bit a little bit and like a significant position of power he became the the offensive coordinator in season when uh when they fought I forget who they fired for former head coach when Nancy Lim was the coach was it Wizen Hunt or no it was McCoy maybe I forget who it was anyway well he came to prominence help Philip Rivers out help Justin Herbert out made Jalen Hertz look pretty good and now he'll make Bryce Young the next in the line that's for sure yeah all right according to NFL Network give me whatever glue you're sniffing all right Derek Carr speak let's go back to Carr his preferred destination his entire free agent time was the New Orleans Saints now he does reunite with his former head coach Dennis Allen who was the Raiders head coach back when Carr was drafted the team all the way back in 2014 now it's good to know that they only played four games together Owen four and Dennis Allen was fired right there during Derek Carr's rookie season but New Orleans not the only team interested in training for the former Raiders quarterback before he was cut as just these or I should say the Saints Jets and Panthers with the three teams that were uh in on Derek Carr on sides or off sides Carr made the wrong choice in picking the Saints over the Jets and Panthers can it be either the Jets and does have to be both well I think you should went to the Jets then it's the other one yeah okay I think you should have gone to the Panthers over the Saints and the reasoning for that even though the Saints are indoors I think the Panthers have the better roster and I think you can win the division in either of those places but when you look at the Jets I don't see how you win the division even with the Jets having a better outside of all the three and it's not even a lock you make the playoffs so if it was for me I would look at the Saints or the Panthers and personally I would rather go to the Panthers than the Saints I think that they have a really good defense uh we know their offensive line is solid and I like DJ Moore a lot I know they have a lot of it with the Saints but there's uncertainties with Kamara you don't even know Michael Thomas could be on the team Frank Reich is at least a solid coach Dennis Allen has never showed the ability to be a good head coach so I would rather go to the Panthers than the Saints so um I don't think it's an egregious error but I I would pick the Saints I would pick the Panthers of the Saints so therefore um the question card made the wrong choice in picking the Saints over the Jets and Panthers I'll go on side the Jets speaking of which now find themselves in a tougher spot with Derek Carr off the board they all reportedly still right now seemingly the only team that's interested in Aaron Rodgers only problem though is that we have yet to learn if the four-time MVP actually wants to play football in 2023 and if it'd be okay playing football for another team that's outside of the Green Bay Packers right now now outside of Rodgers potential targets for the next uh next Jets quarterback could be Lamar Jackson if he's available or possibly Jimmy G as well on sides or off sides Aaron Rodgers will be the Jets quarterback in 2023.

Now I do have a tweet out there from early February saying that Carr would go to the Saints Rodgers would go to the Raiders and Jimmy G would go to the Jets there's just been so many things out there right now that make you believe that the Raiders aren't going to trade for Aaron Rodgers so right now the Jets basically pass it on Carr they think they're going to get Rodgers I'll lean Rodgers to the Jets so on the sides. Anthony Richardson predictably had a great showing at the scouting combine over the weekend the former Florida quarterback set quarterback combine records for the vertical jump the broad jump and then he also did run a 4.43 40 which is not the fastest but one of the fastest 40-yard dashes by any quarterback in combine history. Good job on Trapasso because he was right he said Richardson would blow the roof off the combine he was 1000% right like I don't know how much any of that stuff actually matters but all you've been hearing for what the last like 48 hours or week has been Anthony Richardson this Anthony Richardson that. Everyone is impressed and also not just physically were they impressed but apparently he did really well in all this team meetings especially with the Seahawks where he said him and Pete Carroll did kind of click. You think Pete Carroll took off his shirt like he did with DK Metcalfe?

Maybe. What did you pass me? Right a physical specimen. Pete should get a tattoo Pete should get a tattoo.

Of what? Russ you were wrong I was right. I tattoo that I don't have a tattoo but if I would I would get that tattooed right on my chest. Chest over the back? Yeah right on the chest I want everyone to see it front and center when they see it. Let everyone know I was right Russ was wrong all right on sides or off sides? Let Pete cook that's what my tattoo is. There it is oh that's actually that would work. Pete like in a chef's hat stirring up like a bowl of something. Okay I kind of like it. Russ on the ground cried. Can he still like you know around his belly button?

Yeah go ahead. On sides or off sides? Anthony Richardson will be a top three pick come draft time. Uh no off sides because I don't think the Cardinals are going to trade the pick even if you do have Chicago fall back a little bit like say the Texans I think then Chicago take a defensive player you know uncertainty with Jalen Carter um if not will Anderson Jr. So I think Richardson will go in the top 10 I don't think he'll go in the top three. Offside.

And finally. Do you think he's jumped actually sorry to cut you off I do still think Bryce Young's the first quarterback. Do you think Anthony Richardson has jumped CJ Stroud? I don't think so but do you? The tough part is I think for some teams yes and the only question is will those teams get up to number well they're not going to get to number two but for the Texans.

The majority I'm asking. No okay no I don't think yeah this combine is going to change that much uh overall all right finally Rich Eisen dropped two interesting nuggets today about big time quarterbacks. The first is that he heard that Philip Rivers contacted both the 49ers and Dolphins late last season to see if they'd be interested in signing him. Now Rivers is 41 years old has not played in the NFL since 2020 obviously both of those teams said no. Eisen also mentioned that Tom Brady could be making a return depending on what happens with Tua's health and specifically cited the Dolphins as a team to watch who will make a run for Brady. Onsides are offside Zach. Tom Brady and Philip Rivers both will make a return to the NFL at some point in 2023. Both no Brady I think more likely than Rivers and Brady would either go to the Niners or the Dolphins. Rivers been out of league for two years so I'd be surprised by that one I will go offsides. Offside. You're listening to the Zach Gelb show.

Zach Gelb show CBS Sports Radio. I have a question for you Hickey and let's see if you could guess it. There is one team in the AFC and one team in the NFC that for like the last five years more years than not they've been a pretty respectable good team at times both of these teams have been considered great one more than the other but their records have both been great. They both have two phenomenal head coaches and both of those teams heading into next season I have zero and I mean zero confidence in. Can you guess who the team I think the team in the AFC is a layup. The team in the NFC I think can be difficult. I mean I have two I think that are just fitting the bill that I'm almost maybe too obvious I will say the Ravens and the Packers.

Wrong and wrong. Now on those teams I thought that was perfect. I think the Packers even if they start Jordan Love and I think that's the way that's going I still see them win like seven games.

A big drop off from their standard for the last two and a half decades. A hundred percent but I don't think they'll be horrible the Packers next year if they don't have Rogers like no I'm not saying that they don't have playoffs or anything like that but I could see love surprising some people and they go get like seven or eight wins. Like I'm talking about really bottoming out and the other team was the Ravens not a bad guess because if Lamar is not there I think a lot of people are gonna start to turn on that franchise. So team that's had recent success that you have no confidence in. Yeah and both didn't have good years last year. The Titans then in the AFC?

That'd be correct and that is coming off the report well it was already before this but they've gotten rid of that. LaJuan's out Bud Dupree's now out. Robert Woods they cut. Robert Woods right and now it looks like they are exploring trade options for Derrick Henry final year on the deal. And who knows what the hell Ryan Tanel is gonna be doing going forward if he even wants to be back if they want him. He may be the quarterback next year. Holy cow. That may be the lone survivor.

Sheesh the guy we thought for sure be traded actually may be the only one left at the end of the day. The Titans I'm glad you laugh at the Titans I will say that does make me feel better. So the Titans in the AFC I think in the NFC then I would go with the Rams.

That would be correct. Okay. The Rams. Another team ready to give everyone away.

Exactly and I know that you were optimistic a few weeks ago about the Rams having this redemption kind of season and making the playoffs for next year. They got rid of a lot of guys. It looks like Ramsey's gonna get traded. Bobby Wagner basically looked around and said guys I want to win. You guys aren't anywhere close to winning goodbye.

Allen Robinson which everyone loved that move last year including yours truly. He's now on his way out. Stafford seems like he was flirting with retirement. Donald's been flirting with retirement.

Sean McVeigh has probably been looking at himself in the mirror and flirting with retirement. Cooper cup coming off an injury. Even in a weak NFC.

I think the Rams are gonna be more like last year's version of the Rams where it was ugly than anywhere close to stiff in a playoff spot. I truly have no idea what the Rams are doing. Like I thought Sean McVeigh returning after that what week it felt like of deciding. He delayed the decision.

You know what you know what McVeigh is? He is the Gudekunz and DeCosta versions of the head coach where he already has his mind made up but he's just waiting to tell everyone. Where we know DeCosta doesn't want to get a deal done or we think we know DeCosta doesn't want to get a deal done with Lamar anymore and we know Gudekunz wants to get rid of Rodgers. But neither of them so far have the guts to say this. They put up the front that they both love both their their quarterbacks.

That is McVeigh with retirement. We know he's going to TV or he's going to do the Sean Payton thing where you reset for a year and you go to a situation that just you think is better than what you had a year down the road or two. I just don't get already one foot is out why you're signing up for what is a rebuild unless they are just I mean they have some big move that they plan under their sleeve somehow that's going to you know shock everyone. I don't know like they're getting rid of everyone so it's going to be bare minimum like I said closer to last year than anything else than two years ago that's for sure. Even if you're not trying to go into a full sale rebuild a rebuild mode you kind of retool next year's not gonna be a good year.

Why would you return with all your best players leaving the team? And this is also the year to be aggressive. If you're trying to win quickly in the NFL and the NFC specifically this is the year like in the AFC we talk about this all the time. You have Mahomes. You have Joe Burrow. You have Josh Allen. You have Justin Herbert.

You got Trevor Lawrence. You know I don't think Lamar is going to be there anymore but he's still in that that conference like you have a ton of great quarterback play in the AFC. In the NFC the only two contenders right now are the Eagles who have a great quarterback in Jalen Hurts and the Niners who we don't really know what they have that quarterback but they have a great roster. Outside of that there's no other contenders in the NFC like the Cowboys great regular seasons frauds of the postseason Vikings they got to fix that defense had a great regular season were abysmal in the postseason. So you look at a team like the Rams if there ever is for the team that perfected right the quick fix and going all in if there was ever a year to have a quick fix and you could attract people being in LA this would be the year but I think everyone's starting to realize the Rams are the one foot in one foot out organization now and no one tells you that better than Bobby Wagner who had a great year last year and when your own players saying yeah this team isn't anywhere close to winning and I want to go win a championship somewhere or whatever the wording was in the Schefter report that tells me all I need to know McVeigh let all of his coaches interview before making his decision right we were stunned he wasn't preventing any of his coaches we were stunned when we found out McVeigh was coming back is there a chance he re-retires or I guess actually does retire I never tied in the first place right so you're saying he goes back on his word yes if that's the case I just again and I said before he is a drama whore if he does that in like a month yeah I retired I would be dumb with Sean McVeigh well that would be gutless you have to do before for agency you have to probably do it this week no no like Bruce Arians when he stepped away retired was forced out everyone to look at it that was on selection Sunday or right after a few days after it it's right when for agency started I mean I'm well because Brady answers come back in selection right and that's what obviously was set that that's a brainy factor no so there's no chance like similar timeline McVeigh next week I'm out Raheem Morris is now going to be the new head coach and I need some time off if he does that I would not hire him again as great of a coach as he's been as young as he is as as much of a future and upside that obviously has and what he's done in the league going already two Super Bowls and winning one if he says I'm coming back when no one thought he was coming back and then says he's coming back and then walks away with no one thought he walk away and then get to game one of the season unless there is a health problem which I don't think there are any that we know of that would be gutless that would be that that would be maybe one of the most gutless things I've ever seen in the NFL that would be pathetic I don't think it's gonna happen but I will say the more moves you see and the more good players are getting rid of it just because I thought they were going to actually try to compete and now it seems like they're not unless if he's telling everyone something different that organization the impressions he's given off that he will eventually leave that organization sooner rather than later and go to TV for a year or two or maybe five and then come back somewhere else unless if he's saying I'm fully in for the rebuild that's different then some of this maybe makes sense but I'm with you I think he is close to air quotes retiring but he has to he has to at least make it the game one of the season before you say guys no I'm back and then I'm not back
