Your girlfriend will hate Bird Dogs khaki shorts. She'll say the llamas on their website look like a preschooler's birthday party invite, not an apparel company. She'll say the sexual innuendos in their newsletters are meant for 7th graders, not grown men like you. She might even tell you that naming one of the products, quote, Fistiver Columbus is borderline offensive.

But as soon as you feel their soft inner liner and see how great their stretch material makes you look, you'll never want to take them off. Go to BirdDogs.com slash radio to find out for yourself. They'll even throw in a free tumbler. That's BirdDogs.com slash radio. Time for your daily news brief. We get you caught up on the rumors, reports and reconnaissance from the day in sports. The biggest story today when you look at wide receivers of the NFL is that DeAndre Hopkins yesterday is reportedly signing a contract with the Tennessee Titans.

It's a two year deal worth 26 million dollars, potentially up to 32 million dollars. This is back to May 26 of 2023, courtesy of the I Am Athlete podcast, where DeAndre Hopkins explained what he was looking for in his new team. What I want is stable management upstairs. I think that's something that I haven't really had the past couple of years of my career coming from Houston to being in Arizona. So I've been through three to four GM's my career. So a stable management, a QB who loves the game, QB who, you know, brings everybody on board with him and wishes not just himself, but, you know, people around them. I don't need a great QB. I've done away with subpar QBs, you know, just a QB who loves the game like I do. And a great defense, I think defensemen championships.

So you know what, Hickey, what's interesting about that? I know he's talked about before about wanting to go to a winning situation. Now, some of those things can describe what does constitute a winning situation. But he never said in that clip, I need to go to a winning team, a Super Bowl contender. You go back and you listen through that stable management right now, Rand Carthon and Mike Brable, see eye to eye, right?

It's not like John Robinson's still there. A QB who loves the game and brings everyone on board. What a shot at Kyler Murray, by the way, looking back at that. Tannehill does love the game and say what you want about Tannehill. I don't think he's a great quarterback, but teammates like Ryan Tannehill and Derek Henry hasn't tried to force his way out of Tennessee yet.

So that's to speak something to Ryan Tannehill. And then he talked about a great defense. Now, I don't think anyone will look at Tennessee as a great defense, but their defense throughout the years has played well, like up against Kansas City, we've seen from time to time, up against Buffalo as well in some of those big games that Tennessee has won. So I know that we kept on being told that DeAndre Hopkins wants to go to a winner. I don't think anyone's going to look at Tennessee and say that they're going to be contending for a Super Bowl this year. But just from that clip, it's not as if the team that he picked the other day, even though I don't expect them to be this great team this year, and you could make a case maybe should have gone somewhere else. You look at DeAndre Hopkins, he basically checked off all the boxes right there, Hickey. Especially when he says he doesn't have to go play with a great quarterback.

I've played with basically scrubs my entire life outside to Sean Watson. What the hell is the difference now? He chased the money. End of the day, that was a nice way of outlining what he wants, but also putting in a way where he can just get the best contract for him. And also if the priorities, let's just say, if they were three things and let's start out what he just said, but for most wide receivers, right? The three priorities are money, targets, and wins.

Let's be real. Money was one, targets was two, wins were three. Got the most money with Tennessee, instantly the number one wide receiver.

And to accomplish those two things, sometimes you don't go to the best winning destination. And if you are DeAndre Hopkins, this goes as I told you it would, you'll sign with a lesser team and talk yourself into things that they've done in the past to say, well, they've had this many years up until last year of above 500 ball, that's a winning destination. In reality, we all know the Titans this year, they'd be lucky to just get into the playoffs. They're not really winning much this year. Now you have a bigger college, honestly, they make the playoffs. Big year for them.

Yeah. And in the AFC, there's so many teams we talked about. Maybe Tennessee's one of those teams that's flying under the radar in terms of a team that most people don't think they'll get to the playoffs, but then Vrabel coaches his ass off and finds a way for them to go 10 and seven this year and find them in maybe in a tiebreaker to get on it.

Let's listen up to Joel Embiid. This is at the uninterrupted sports film festival where he says his only goal is to win a championship, whether that's in Philly or wait for it, wait for it, somewhere else. Swung with a championship, you know, whatever it takes, I don't know what that's going to be, whether it's in Philly or, you know, everywhere else, you know, I just want to have a chance to accomplish that.

I want to see what it feels like to win that first one and then you can think about, you know, the next one. You know, it's not easy, but, you know, it takes more than, you know, one, two, three hours. You gotta have, you know, good people around you. And, you know, myself, you know, every single day I work hard to, you know, be at that level so I can produce and make it happen.

So every single day that's, you know, working towards that goal, that's, you know, that's where my mindset has always been. So you listened to that, Hickey, and you probably said that that is admirable, right? That's a good response by Joel Embiid, finally admitting that, hey, there's a chance pretty much that if Philly doesn't get their act together, I may go somewhere else to go win, right? You don't have a problem with what he said. I have one big problem with what he said.

I'll get to it in just a second, but I want to hear your answer first. I mean, I don't have, my biggest problem is the fact that nothing wants to win. My biggest problem is that it almost feels like he's deflecting a little bit from his bad play this past year.

That's my biggest problem. He was terrible, especially when they needed him most. Game six at home closed it out with Jason Tatum having a stinker of a game.

Until the fourth quarter. He was terrible. And then in Boston, he was better off no showing. He was better off staying in Philly and not going to the game than how he played in that winner go home situation. He would have been better off going to Boston, just go to Centarpio's and get yourself a slice of pizza and one of those great sausages that are in the window. And then sit on the bench and eat that pizza while your team is getting smoked. That would have, you would have looked better there than how you played on the field. But yet, like I liked the fact he wants to win, but again, for me, it's still raw this past year.

You had a good chance to win and you yourself blew it. So here's why I don't like it. Has nothing to do what he said in that clip. Afterwards, he goes, I was trolling. Where in his Twitter handle, it's Joel Troel like off troll, or you could just say it's troll and bead. You can't say that and then just say that you were trolling. That's gutless because there has to be some validity into saying whether that's in Philly or somewhere else.

Cause everyone's wondering. And I get what you're saying. I've said it for a while that and B gets off the hook with some of these bad performances because of the way the team is constructed, but that's a genuine thought that you had.

And to play it up on Twitter, as if you were just trolling, cause you troll people a lot that I thought was gutless because then why should I take anything that you say seriously? And I thought that was a serious, genuine moment from Joel and bead. So that's my problem with it. That's very fair. Again, it makes anytime now some blowbacks come in his way, he looked soft by kind of sprinting back or just kind of playing that card of, Oh, I'm just kidding. Don't it's just a joke.

When, like I said, in reality, you're kind of speaking that joke into truth. Tyree kill says he'll go over 2000 yards and win another Super Bowl before his career ends. This courtesy, this is podcast, right? So this is the formula for Tyree kill. He just says things. So people started clicking, right?

I'll accuse someone to be in clickbait. It's Tyree kill on the, it needed to be said, which didn't podcast. I will break 2000 yards next year, bro. And all I'm gonna say is 2000 yards was on my bucket list to get bro. Before I leave this league and y'all think the cheater going to leave without doing something he promised himself he going to do as a, as a G I got y'all baby 2000 yards and another Super Bowl.

We getting that. Believe that. So if Tyree kill didn't have Jalen waddle, I would say absolutely. He could go get 2000 yards, but since you have Jalen waddle and he put up 1,710 yards last year. So give credit to Tyree kill.

I don't think you're getting 2000. I think Jalen waddle needs to get hurt, which no one wants to see in order for Tyree kill, like out the entire season for Tyree kill Hickey to get 2000 yards. Now this is definitely technicality because I don't think total yards post-season stats count. They don't.

No, they don't. Would you count it if you like had like 300 yards in the playoffs on top of like 17? Okay. I'm just asking because all these NFL stats, you separate regular season and post. I get it. And it's very confusing.

It is. It's annoying, but I'm just asking if maybe all of a sudden he has that where he's like a big playoff game. All of a sudden he pushes over 2000 and can go back and look at, Hey, look, I did it. It was Kenny Clark who joins us on Friday on Jordan loves development heading into this season, man. He's just been steady. He coming in, come in to work. He's going to be, he's going to be a great player, excited about, you know, everything, everything that he brings to our team. He's definitely like a leader. He comes in every single day and it works and it works his ass off. I think that's what the, that's what the guys respect about him. That's what everybody loves about him.

He got that quiet, you know, that quiet swag, that quiet, just confidence and you know, everybody feed off of that. So can't wait to get out there with Jordan and let's go to Jimbo Fisher. He won't confirm that Bobby Petrino, who was brought in this off season will call plays this off season. I'm not going to get into what we're doing, how we're doing it again. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not trying to avoid anything.

I just don't want to create, you create advantages or narratives out there for what goes on. But listen, Bobby was hired for a reason and he's a tremendous coach and tremendous guy and a tremendous football mind, tremendous recruiter. He's done a great job recruiting since he's been there, everything he does. And now he'll call a lot of, I mean, hopefully he'll call the game. We'll have suggestions on things we do and whether it's offense, defense, every coach is always involved. That's, it's a more collective thing than people want to give it room for. And then when, but when you get to call and you get on a roll, you gotta have a guy that can do it.

And I think Bobby can definitely do that. Shut up. What an egotistical douche. I'm sorry.

I know you're on the hot seat. You're getting paid a ridiculous amount of money, but come on. You brought Bobby Petrino in to call the plays, but your ego is going to get affected if you just admit that publicly, like what the heck is he doing right there? That's just Jimbo Fisher trying to make something more complicated than it actually is.

Just be honest, be genuine, stop being a fraud. Yeah. Bobby Petrino is calling the place. I sucked last year. I, at least that would be admirable. At least there'd be some adjustments and some honesty, but what an egotistical d-bag that was Hickey. And what you just heard from Jimbo Fisher. I love the, hopefully he'll be calling plays.

Yeah. Like he has no control of who's calling plays how the offense is going to look. You know what that screams? Petrino will call plays week one, as soon as there's a three. And now he's taken over the reins. If I said the over-under at week six, Jimbo's back calling plays, did you take the over or the under? I got to see their schedule first, but that screams I would take the under. Well, Petrino would then kick his ass. I'm sure he would. And maybe Jimbo is going to go into that week five game of the black eye, but dammit, if he has those 400 play sheets in front of him, he's calling plays again. I think he'll be happy. You know, they play in their six game too.

Alabama, Alabama. Oh yeah. Brian Kelly was asked if LSU got to the conference title game last year and lost to Georgia can win the SEC. There's no question that we can contend. I think we showed that even last year. And I think the roster is stronger. I think there's a confidence in the group. I think they're understanding how to prepare to be champions in this league. It's tough, but I think that they understand now what's in front of them and the challenges.

And look, they're not going to sneak up on anybody. So that makes the second year a lot more difficult. And Brian Kelly says LSU isn't on the same level though as Georgia right now. We'll have a football roster that will be able to compete against Georgia. Is that right now?

No, it's not. But if we continue to do what we're doing, we're going to have a roster that can compete against Georgia. And then it's just a matter of getting it done on the playing field. Has anyone's stock turned around as much as the way that we talked about Brian Kelly this time last year to the way that we talk about him now? Like I said this at the end of the college football season, if you asked me pick three coach for the next five years that I'm going to believe in the most Kirby smart, Nick Saban, and then Brian Kelly. Cause we've seen three coaches, Saban, Les Miles, and then Go Tigers and Ed Orgeron win national championships. We know Brian Kelly's a really good coach. He could coach his ass off. He turned around the Notre Dame program, even though they did not win a national championship game, but Brian Kelly was getting clown last year for the stupid accent. And then for the cringy recruiting videos and gets to an SEC title game last year. I think he's going to do a pretty good job at LSU. And he's kind of handling everything the right way right now and answering those questions and talking about how no one's going to sleep on them now.

And then also making it clear. We're still chasing Georgia, which all that stuff is true because the entire college football world right now, even Alabama is chasing Georgia. We'll take a break. And this is that Gelb show on CBS sports radio. So Brian Kelly stock is booming. We'll tell you who stock is booming and dooming next with the closing bell.

You're listening to the Zach Gelb show. Another day is in the books and we're taking stock of the sports world. It's time to find out who's up and who's down. Let's end the day, right? And hit the closing bell.

And hit the closing bell only on the Zach Gelb show. What a time it is to be Steph Curry. So he wins this tournament, this golf tournament over the weekend at Lake Tahoe. He hits a hole in one. And did you see the finish where he had an eagle and he's making basketball shots while walking from hole to hole.

He's running around, having fun. I'll tell you, Hickey, I don't know how many people are cooler on this planet, at least in the world of sports. And I'm sure it extends past the world of sports and Steph Curry. Steph Curry's the definition of just being cool.

So give a stock up to Steph Curry. Imagine being able to hit all those three pointers and be the greatest NBA three pointer, three point shooter of all time. And then you go hit a hole in one too. And he said it was the second hole hole in one of his life, but never in a tournament has he hit one. I guess the other one was just all for fun, playing with buddies and things like that. It's awesome.

I'm really jealous of Steph Curry. I like the celebration to just run down there, run, run, run, run. I like it. And treat the pin as if it was like a blocking bag, like a sled for an NFL offense alignment because he tried to tackle the pin. I came close to hitting a hole in one this weekend. I was on a buck 65 par three and I hit the ball. It was, I thought it was a good shot. And then my buddies were like, Oh my God, it's a chance to go in. And I got really excited and it rolled just past the jar, five feet past the jar. And yes, I hit the birdie putt. So that was good. And I had no other pars though.

I didn't have any pars. I had a birdie and then a bunch of bogeys and, and double bogeys and triple bogeys. Congratulations to Carlos Alcaraz. I got a chance to see him play at the U.S. Open. He was phenomenal, but he just won Wimbledon over the weekend, defeating Novak Djokovic and Novak Djokovic says that Carlos Alcaraz has it all. Well, I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game being consisting of certain elements from Roger Ruff and myself.

I would agree with that. I think he he's got basically best of all three worlds. So I haven't played a player like him ever, to be honest, you know, Roger and Rafa have their own obviously strengths and weaknesses, but Carlos is very complete player. Think about that from Novak Djokovic. He's never played a player like him. And this is a guy that has habitually gone up against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Now here's the thing that stands out to me with Carlos, how much ground he covers. I've never seen someone move the way that Carlos Alcaraz has just by seeing him one time at the U.S. Open. Let's hear from Carlos on his emotions after winning Wimbledon. It's a dream come true for me, you know, being a Wimbledon champion, something that I really wanted. And honestly, I didn't expect to get it, you know, really soon. And yeah, it's time to enjoy and, you know, to see everything, all my feelings.

And yeah, it's as I say, it's a dream. And he's only 20 years old and has already won two grand slams. That's crazy.

That's unbelievable. Give a stock up to Carlos Alcaraz. Alrighty, Mike Frable, I don't know what to expect out of Tennessee this year, but you just got DeAndre Hopkins and you found the way to get DeAndre Hopkins, who was also potentially going to your old head football coach in Bill Belichick. I'll give it to Mike Frable. Got John Robinson out, Rand Carthon in, and he's calling the shots in Tennessee.

And now he gets another really good offensive player to coach. And you look at Tennessee, no one's talking about them. We'll see if they can be scrappy this year, but they're going to be a tough team to play. You know, they're going to give it their all.

I just don't know how many wins it's going to go to because Ryan Tanel's their quarterback, but a nice job over the weekend by Mike Frable and company getting the job done with DeAndre Hopkins. I did see on Saturday that Bryce Harper had a home run. It's his first home run since May 25th. Give a stock up to Bryce Harper. Going back to the golf world, Rory McIlroy birdied the last hole of the Scottish Open and ended up winning.

We'll see what happens to the Open Championship this week, the fourth and final major of the calendar year, but give a stock up to Rory McIlroy. I'm giving a stock down to my New England Patriots. You had a chance to go get DeAndre Hopkins.

All you had to do was show them the money and you failed to do so. And I said this off season, I need two things to happen. Get a legit offensive coordinator and a number one wide receiver. Patriots got a legit offensive coordinator and Bill O'Brien, they failed to get a number one wide receiver. I know Juju Smith Schuster is solid and Kendrick Bourne, solid. Devante Parker, solid. But none of those guys are number one wide receivers in the NFL. And Mac Jones just doesn't have enough weapons. So stock down to the New England Patriots. How about Miles Sanders?

Hickey, I still can't believe this. And I understand that you want to go to bat for your guy, but he's not even your guy. The starting quarterback is going to be Bryce Young. So to say that Andy Dalton is going to be a Hall of Famer, is a future Hall of Famer of what?

Being a really good guy? He's not a Hall of Fame starting quarterback in the NFL. It just shows you that in this day and age, Hickey, and I know we sound both very old and we're not old. It's like everyone's a goat. Everyone has to be a Hall of Famer. Andy Dalton was a solid quarterback.

Andy Dalton made a few Pro Bowls. But there's no argument to be made for him going to the Hall of Fame. You know, Gary Myers votes for the Hall of Fame. I would love to get Gary Myers on. What would you say for Andy Dalton's Hall of Fame case?

Yeah, that's a no for me, dawg. Kind of go Randy Jackson. So give a stock down to Miles Sanders. NFL running backs.

Saquon Barkley. Final day to get an extension done or else he's going to have to play on the tag. Same for Tony Pollard. Same for Josh Jacobs.

No, no, and no on a long-term extension. Also an offseason where Joe Mixon had his salary basically cut in half. Dalvin Cook after four straight 1,000 yard seasons got cut. And basically nothing happened to Austin Eckler as well in terms of him with his contract. Being an NFL running back, you're still used a whole lot. But you ain't getting paid. And that stinks.

Stockdown. And finally, Hickey, just one more time. I know we just played in the last segment, but this is so funny. Here is Jimbo Fisher not confirming that Bobby Petrino will call plays this season for Texas A&M. I'm not going to get into what we're doing, how we're doing it again. I'm not trying to avoid anything.

I just don't want to create, you create advantages or narratives out there for what goes on. But listen, Bobby was hired for a reason. And he's a tremendous coach and tremendous game changer. He's a tremendous coach and tremendous guy and a tremendous football mind, tremendous recruit. He's done a great job recruiting since he's been there, everything he does. And he'll call a lot of, I mean, hopefully he'll call the game. We'll have suggestions on things we do. And whether it's offense, defense, every coach is always involved.

That's, it's a more collective thing that people want to give it room for. And then when, but when you get to calling and you get on a roll, you got to have a guy that can do it. And I think Bobby can definitely do that as well as anybody in college football. Just hearing that a second time, Hickey, and I know I went off on Jimbo segment and I stand by it, him trying to say, you know, I'm not trying to avoid anything in the beginning.

You are trying to avoid the question because you don't want it to bruise your ego. And you hired him for a reason. And then he almost said, he's about to say, you know, I hope he calls plays like he just talks a thousand miles per hour.

And he just threw that in there. Just say it. You needed someone to call plays this year. Your team is struggling.

I get it. We're on the hot seat. We got to change things. And Bobby Petrino is calling plays being secretive about this. Hickey just makes no sense to me.

It's it's really stupid. And it's a bad approach by Jimbo Fisher when you knew this question was coming. And this is just another college coach just being so secretive and everything we all know the answer to. And he almost spilled the beans when he's trying to be secretive as well.

I hate all head coaches. And I do this. I don't want to get, you know, give away a competitive advantage. It's the biggest cop out in the world. Like they, they think everyone is listening. And now every single state secret is given away based on one sentence. Everyone knows Jimbo Fisher isn't calling plays to start off this season. So give Jimbo Fisher a stock down.
