Can you pray with me, Father? God, we are in need of you each and every moment. And Father, when we think that we can do life without you, God, we fall. Lord, we are in desperate need of you even in this place here today. And every single one of us have come into this place carrying different things in our hearts, different things in our lives, different things that we have to do that we're responsible for. And God, maybe church today has become a routine.
It's just become something that we check off of a box each and every week. And God, maybe whatever we've stumbled in here with today, God, I pray, Lord, that we would recognize that we are in desperate need of you for every breath, for everything that we do. God, we need you each and every hour. God, I'm thankful for the worship. I'm thankful that our eyes can be turned upon you. And Father, that you can be exalted, you can be glorified, and you can be high and lifted up here today, Lord, we love you so much. For it's in your name we pray and all God's people said, Amen, and amen, you can have a seat in the presence of God. Well, listen, it's the 11 o'clock service.
How's the 11 o'clock crowd doing? You guys with me here? Okay, there we go. That's awesome. And it is so good to see each and every one of you here today. And I apologize, we could only pay half of our light bill and so the lights just didn't get turned on in that side of the auditorium.
That's a joke, by the way. And some of you are like, wow, donate a few bucks if I can get my seat back in the wing, you know, some of you are like that. But no, it is so good to see you here today. This is week number two in our new Sunday service schedule. And so if you've kind of slipped in, maybe you're a guest here today, we are so glad that you found the right times just because we have been for years in a different schedule. We've all been kind of packed in here at 10 o'clock.
And so we have two identical services, one at 831 at 11. And you guys found your way to the 11 o'clock and we are super thankful for that and so glad that you have found yourself here. I want to mention a couple of things before we dive into God's Word together. First, we have on October the 13th, we have homecoming that is coming up, we will be celebrating our church's 78th birthday.
Isn't that pretty amazing? And so let's give God praise for that. I think that's something we should do. And and listen, 78 years is a long time and we are super thankful for that. And so we'll be celebrating together. And just to keep you on on your toes, since we just changed all of our Sunday morning schedule, we're going to change it for that day. Okay, and we're all going to be here together at 10am on October the 13th. And so we will all come in here there will not be Bible fellowships that day, we're going to come in here to service and then we will head down to the gym after the service and everyone's invited and we're going to have lunch on the grounds that will be provided so you don't have to bring anything. And we would love for you to be a part of that invite somebody and we are looking forward to all being together and then also next Sunday, we are doing something in our 830am service and they'll be recognized in 11 o'clock too.
So if you're going to continue to come to the 11 that's totally fine. But we will be ordaining two new deacons during the 830am service and we'll be ordaining Bobby Beck as well as Wes Burnett in the 830am service next week. So we are looking forward to that and then we'll recognize them in this service as well. And then Tony Boyd will also be rotating onto the deacon board but he has already been ordained so we will be recognizing him next week as well. So it's going to be a great day in the house of God.
Well listen if you have your Bible go to Matthew chapter number seven. Matthew chapter number seven and we are continuing a series entitled the greatest sermon ever. And I want you to know up front that if you're a guest here today I don't think too highly of my sermons and so that's not meaning that you are going to hear the greatest sermon ever in this place okay. And that's just what we named this series as we slowly work through what we believe is the greatest sermon ever and that's Jesus' sermon on the mount. It's a famous sermon and regardless of your church background you might not have ever been in church until today you probably have heard of the sermon on the mount. And so we are in week number thirteen can you believe that week number thirteen of our series through the sermon on the mount. This sermon it covers Matthew chapter five through Matthew chapter number seven so we're kind of coming down to the close next week we'll close out the series and we have been looking at so many different things and in this sermon to our knowledge Jesus he sat down in a mountaintop and he sat down to teach the multitudes of people and he started teaching his disciples and then we know that there were other people that came and joined and so there was this large multitude of people that he was teaching and he was teaching on what the kingdom of heaven should look like. What the kingdom of heaven should look like and how we if we are citizens that means we're saved and we know Jesus as savior we're citizens of heaven of his kingdom how are we supposed to live here on this life and so Jesus he begins to talk about anything and everything in this sermon I've said this about every single week but we call it the sermon on the mount but as I started studying it it probably could be called the mountain of a sermon because of everything that it entails and so in this sermon and sermon on the mount Jesus he talks about so many different relevant topics that we have questions about he talked about things like divorce he talked about how to live a blessed life a joyful life he talked about lust he talked about about sex he talked about keeping your word and not lying he talked about all sorts of things giving and prayer and and private spiritual disciplines and and different things and we've slowly unpacked all of that together and then he's kind of wrapping up the sermon and he begins to talk about something that is so so important for all this time Matthew 5 through chapter 7 he's been talking about what the kingdom looks like and how the kingdom functions and how we can live like the kingdom here on this earth and then he completely changes gears here in chapter number seven and he talks about the path to the kingdom he talks about the way to the kingdom in other words Jesus has talked about what it looks like and what the kingdom looks like and now he's going to give you the way to get there and how to arrive there I want to give you kind of the big idea and then we're going to unpack this here together it's this every path that you're on leads you to stand before God one day but only one path leads you to stand in favor with God one day let me say that again every single path that anybody and everybody is on leads them to stand before God one day all of us are going to do that but what Jesus is saying is there's only one path that leads you to actually stand in favor with God on that that day that's what he's talking about he's talking about the road to the kingdom this kingdom that he has described he talks about the road to it so let's look at that together the road to heaven or the road to the kingdom Matthew chapter number seven if you have your bible verses 12 through 14 here's what he says verse number 12 therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you do ye even so to them for this is the law and the prophets now we're not going to spend a whole lot of time on this we didn't teach on this a whole lot last week but verse number 12 is what we know as the golden rule the golden rule and in other words treat others the way that you want to be treated how many of you want people to treat you the way that you treat them anybody okay I think all of us would agree that to be honest with you it's like all of us want to be treated with grace all of us wanted to be treated with mercy all of us want to be treated kindly all of us want to be treated patiently all of these different things that we look at that's what how we want to be treated and what Jesus is saying is those citizens of heaven those people who know Jesus what the kingdom of heaven looks like is we treat others the way that we want to be treated and then in verse number 13 he begins to talk about this narrative of what the path to heaven looks like here's what he says enter ye in at the straight gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in there at but because or because straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it here in these two verses really 13 and 14 Jesus he talks about the way to the kingdom how to get to the kingdom the first thing I want you to see it's very plain it's right there in those two verses is this there are two roads for you to choose from in other words there's not a ton of roads there's only two roads Jesus mentions two roads that every single one of us are on every single one of you that are in this place you're in on one of these two roads road number one goes like this it's found in verse number 13 it is what we would call the wide road it is the wide road you say what is the wide road look like here's what it is it is an easy road most people want to take the easy road right and that's why the road is so wide and so many people are taking the path because here's what I'll tell you about this road it is an easy road the wide road is a culturally acceptable road it is a road where pretty much anything goes it is that wide so it doesn't really matter how you live and so that's why so many people want to take this road because it doesn't impact you it requires no sacrifice you can do whatever you want and that's why this road is easy and wide the second road that he mentions in verse number 14 is the narrow road now the narrow road it is it is hard it is a road where you have to die to yourself it is a road where you have to surrender your will I will tell you this that the narrow road is very counter cultural it is hard it isn't normal it doesn't go with what society thinks it is a narrow road but the point is all of us are on one of these two roads isn't that interesting now I think it's important that you understand context of what Jesus or who Jesus is talking to Jesus opens this sermon in Matthew chapter number five with the disciples gathered around him now we know because the end of the chapter seven we see that more people came on there's crowds that have kind of joined in pretty much everywhere Jesus went and when Jesus would teach he would gather multitudes would just kind of show up and be a part of this but I'll tell you this the sermon was directed to religious people that's how the sermon was intended to be directed at that's why Jesus harps throughout this sermon on things like our exterior and our interior and he talks on what it's like to be a hypocrite and how you know a lot of us look really good and polished on the outside but our inside has never been never been changed you see this this sermon is directed towards religious people and I'll be honest with you I've grown up in church my entire life and so my parents you know they drug me to church since I was born and so I became a Christian you know when I was young when I was five years old and here's the thing I've heard a lot of sermons preached on this text and here's what I'll tell you is that I used to think that this wide road that Jesus is talking about I used to think that the wide road is only you know the drug addicts or the alcoholics or the sex addicts or the atheist and and the agnostics the people that just hated God or the people that just were evil and wicked and and things like that and here's what's interesting when you look at this passage of scripture and what we're going to dive into here in a moment is this is talking and directed to religious people this is talking really to what we would consider church people and he's telling them and challenging them that every single one of us there are only two roads and we are all on one of those road the second thing he says about these roads is this is few are on the road to heaven few are on the road to are on the road to to heaven and and so and and what's amazing to me is who he's talking to he's talking to Jewish people predominantly to the Jews had gathered together and he's talking to them all of these Jews these religious people these Pharisees in other words many of the people that Jesus is talking to in his audience they would be considered the religious leaders of the day let's put that in our context it would be like the volunteers at the church the members of the church those who know the Bible perhaps those who teach the Bible those who serve those who prophesied those who speak about God those who maybe invite people to church those who on the outside everything looks right and everything seems to look good those are the ones that Jesus is referring to and when he talks about this this wide gate and then this really narrow gate he says that few are on the path that narrow path now I get it if you're new to church you might say something like this or perhaps you've encountered somebody who said man I don't like that because how could a loving God how could he ever have a path so narrow there's got to be more paths that lead to the kingdom I'll tell you this that here Jesus is very clear that this is an exclusive road that he has it is a narrow road and if that's hard for you to understand I get it I understand that that is difficult for us to realize but listen Jesus throughout scripture has told us how exclusive this road really is think about this what did Jesus say I am the way he didn't say he was a way he didn't say he was one of many ways no he said he is the one and only way right he's the one and only way not only that Jesus also said this I am the door I am the door the door to the kingdom it only comes through Jesus Christ he also says this I am the resurrection and the life the scripture later says that salvation is in no one else there is none other but Jesus Christ you see the way to the kingdom the way of salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus alone but few be that find the narrow road the second thing I want you to see is this the lifestyle of those on the road to heaven this road to the kingdom what do they look like he goes on in verses 15 through 20 and he talks about this look at what he says beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly they're ravitting wolves that word ravitting or is not a word that we use a whole lot I bet none of you anybody used that word this morning when you were talking to your kids at all none of you okay and so I think I'm gonna bring it out when I'm talking to my kids I'm just gonna be like you know what you are right now you're a ravitting wolf you know and so just start telling them that they'll be all confused but it's not a word that we use very often but I want you to understand exactly what he means is it is a Greek word that it's talking about being empty and looking to be filled in other words Jesus is contrasting he says beware these false prophets which come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly they're ravitting wolves here's what he's saying is that in religious settings a lot of times there's a lot of religious leaders that look like sheep but on the inside their heart has never been transformed by the gospel and so on the inside they're a ravitting wolf they're a wolf in sheep's clothing they look right on the outside everything seems right everything looks normal everything looks godly you know they serve they they attend church faithfully they know some of the bible they they volunteer they they attend a class they they try to go to bible studies when they can everything on the outside looks good but he says beware because some of them have never been changed on the inside and so they are empty and they're trying to fill their emptiness with trying to please everybody around them or trying to impress everybody around them that's exactly who the pharisees were the pharisees looked right on the outside but they were empty on the inside and what they tried to fill their emptiness with is trying to you know all everybody to respect them on a spiritual level and that's what he's talking about so he mentions beware of false prophets verse 16 you shall know them by their fruits do men gather grapes or thorns or figs or of thistles even so every good tree bringing forth good fruit but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit a good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is honed down and cast into the fire wherefore by their fruits he shall know them in other words your fruit reveals the type of tree that you really are your fruit reveals the type of tree that you really are so here jesus he really gives us these these stark contrasts he mentions the gates right you have a wide and you have a narrow he mentions the prophets you have sheep and then you have wolves that look like sheep then he mentions the two trees you have one that has good fruit and then one that has bad fruit you have two pleas that he's going to go into here in a moment when we stand before god and then he closes out this section we're talking about two houses one built on the rock and one built on the sand but here the lifestyle of those heading to heaven those who are a part of the kingdom here's what i'll tell you two things i want to mention to you the first thing about their lifestyle is this it's found in verse number 15 their inner life has been changed their inner life has been changed now jesus throughout this this any of his teaching but really in this sermon on the mount he puts a major contrast here between someone's exterior actions and their interior motives their exterior actions and their interior motives now remember he's talking to jewish people church people where the outward looked good and they possibly looked the same as as real godly people over here they looked all you know right on the outside but different on the inside you say why is that why is that and here's why is because you can see it even in the houses remember the two houses he talks about at the end of this chapter which we'll look at next week one was built on the sand one was built on on the solid rock right and and when that happens when the wind came you know and the floods and all that kind of stuff happened only one of them was left standing now on the outside they both looked good right they both looked normal they both even looked possibly the same but the internal foundation had never been changed you see the first thing about the lifestyle of those who are on that narrow path to heaven it's that their inner life has been has been changed now for you to understand what jesus is saying you must understand how the gospel works you have to understand how the gospel works you see the gospel is not behavior modification a lot of us think that right we've talked to people hey i'm gonna start going to church and i'm gonna start changing everything about my life and and when i leave church i'm gonna work really hard i'm gonna try my very best and we try and try and try and what we find every single time is that us we might have a good motive to try but at the end of the day us trying hard it cannot change your your heart it cannot change your heart that's why think about it and we don't have time to turn there the apostle paul he wrote a letter every single one of you should probably look at this at some point and really study this he wrote a letter to the churches at galatia and and he wrote this letter and here's why it's because the churches at galatia what they were allowing into their church is is what we would refer to as judaism it was law-based righteousness in other words you know they felt these people were christians they were part of the church and what they were allowing was you know this law-based righteousness to come in that if we check the boxes if we add a bunch of rules if we do a bunch of religious rituals if we do all of these things then we will know god better and the apostle paul writes an entire letter to the churches at galatia six chapters and he's talking directly about about that and here's what he said your rules the law cannot change your heart can't change your heart you know what the law is good for you know what rules are good for it just shows us that we all fall short right that's what they're good for think about it you got kids right some of you do and and uh and your kids if i set a line right if i set a line for my kids you know what's funny they always want to get as close to the line and you know my son pretty much he wants to jump over the line right he just wants to go on the other side he wants to live on the other side of the line that's it right why is that okay why is that it's because internally we have a sin nature and internally we have a fleshly nature that wants to do wants to do wrong and and here's the thing is that what paul is saying in the in the letter to the churches at galatia is he's saying this the law the rules the rituals all of those things all that shows us is that we all fall short before god the only thing that can change your heart is the gospel the only thing that can change your life is the gospel in other words the churches at galatia they were obeying god out of guilt they were obeying god out of obligation they were obeying god to try to be accepted by god and what paul was saying is this is that what the gospel does it changes our heart to where now we don't obey out of god obligation we don't obey out of guilt we don't obey to be accepted by god we obey because he changed us from the inside out and we are now obeying him out of a deep internal love for god you see that's the point here you see that jesus is making this contrast before the exterior and the internal here's the question you can ask yourself has your heart been changed by the power of the gospel what's your motivation for for living for god what's your motivation for coming to church today what's your motivation for trying to obey god what's your motivation for all of those things has your heart been changed by the power of the gospel you see the ones that are headed on this narrow way to the kingdom of heaven their hearts have been changed by the power of the gospel but number two they bear fruit verses 16 really through through 20 talk about how how you know them by their fruit right those that are on the way to the kingdom of heaven will bear spiritual fruit that's why it scares me when christians come to church on sunday they sing praises they might serve on sunday but when they leave here they don't look anything like what the bible talks about what it means to be a follower of jesus right their attitude stinks their hope is in a bunch of things that you know like politics and different things like that their hopes not in christ right their attitude doesn't doesn't really resemble what a a believer should be like they they're not joyful they're critical they're angry they're frustrated all these different things when i see that i get really nervous and this is the passage of why because what he's saying is this is those that are on that narrow path to heaven the narrow path to the kingdom of heaven here's what he says is that there's going to be spiritual fruit that come from that there's going to be spiritual fruit that comes to that number three i want you to see this the road to heaven is reserved for those that genuinely know god those that genuinely know god now jesus he you know he's working through this sermon he's kind of talking and we're slowly kind of dissecting it but here in verse number 21 i want you to know buckle up jesus begins to really i mean i can imagine you could hear a pin drop when jesus was teaching this to the multitudes because he really hit something home because all of us we want you know when we die here in this life we we want you know everything to be great for us afterwards right we read about that we hear about it we sing about it and things like that jesus is going to tell us that every single one of us are going to stand before god but only few are going to stand in favor of god or in favor with god look at what he says verse 21 not everyone remember to the religious crowd predominantly not everyone that saith unto me lord lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven many will say to me in that day listen to this lord lord have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name done many wonderful works and then will i profess unto them i never knew you depart from me ye that work iniquity in other words lawlessness unrighteousness this is convicting isn't it scary it's scary and here's why because number one i want you to see this for many false christians it is going to come as a complete surprise to them look at this like like they they're sitting there and they're they're arguing with with god and saying lord lord have we not prophesied in your name have we not cast out devils in your name in your name have we done wonderful things we've served we've volunteered we've talked we invited people to church and here jesus says depart from me i never knew you and by the way you know what's scary about this is this like when we all stand before god remember every single one of us regardless of the road you're on if you're on the road to destruction you're still going to stand before god if you're on the road to life you're going to stand in favor with god it's a big difference but you know what jesus doesn't do according to matthew chapter 7 he doesn't just group us all together you know what he could do i mean there's gonna be millions and millions right he could do and i don't i mean i have questions about what all this is gonna look like but here he could just put all the lost people in one big group right and just send them on their way and then he could say all right all of you guys head into the kingdom of heaven but the scary thing about this is this he looks lost people dead square in the eye and has to say depart from me i never knew you religious people that have tried to serve and tried to do all these marvelous works second thing i want you to see is this the difference in what path you are on will be based on whether you know god or not it'll be based on whether you genuinely know god or not this is very important it's very important there were in this case these people that he's talking about here in matthew chapter 7 they were into rituals they were into religion they were into rules but you know what they lacked a relationship with the father they knew about god they knew of jesus you see that when they say lord lord in other words that means master teacher they knew of him and they recognized him but listen they did not know him they had served god but for selfish reasons for reasons to fill them to fill their heart up in ways that they shouldn't have done they're serving god not out of love for him but to get something from him you see here's what you need to understand is that everything in scripture ties together to this point to the moment that we stand before god if you look throughout scripture and i love this about the bible because if you're like me and you've been in church for a long time and growing up you know you're reading through the scripture and and and you're kind of like where does this all fit together how does it all tie together i'm going to help you with that here's the point is genesis chapter number one when god created the world if you can remember all that right he created everything he created man why so that man could walk and talk with god in other words the reason why you and i were created was so that we could have a relationship with god so that we could walk with him so that we could talk with him and we could know god we could fellowship with god all of that changed in genesis chapter number three if you remember in genesis 3 adam and eve sin when that happened the relationship was broken the fellowship was broken and man was now cast out of the garden out of the presence of god and now there are these angelic beings with swords guarding the presence of god in other words when sin entered into the world our relationship with god was broken and now judgment was in the middle between us and god and by the way every single one of us deserves to be judged and punished for the sin that we have committed so from the beginning of time the entire narrative of scripture here's what it's about god trying to redeem and purchase us back into a relationship with him that's the point of scripture that's why in the old testament you read about things like the tabernacle why in the world would that matter is because god dwelt among men he wanted to know them he wanted to have a relationship with them that's why the temple is in the old testament that's why factoring in the new testament jesus came why to dwell among us to have a relationship with you so the entire narrative of scripture is about god the father trying to redeem you back into a relationship with him so that one day when you can stand before god your works don't matter your good deeds don't matter what matters is do you have that relationship with them you see here's the point if your good works mattered if they mattered in where you're going to spend eternity then matthew chapter 7 couldn't be in scripture because jesus says that the ones that are going to stand before him that he's going to say depart from me they prophesied in his name and they did many marvelous works in the name of god that just tells me right there works mean nothing the only thing that matters in that day is do you know him and does he know you you see it's all about a relationship with god so as we kind of wrap this up i want you to know as your pastor listen i'm not saying this to frighten you i'm not saying this to confuse you i'm saying this to warn us i'm telling you listen up and here's why it's because i i know this is true of society it's true of church people it's true of church as ever we naturally gravitate to the wide road don't we we naturally gravitate and are led to the road that is wide because it's easy it's easier so so we naturally go there but what jesus is saying is there's going to be millions of people in churches across america religious people that are going to stand before god one day and hear the most terrible verdict that they will ever ever hear so my question is to you has your heart been changed by the power of the gospel have you been changed from the inside out not the outside in because that's where so many people got it wrong if not listen as your pastor don't delay this like like don't delay don't don't make a decision because i'm telling you too but i'm telling you this this breaks my heart as a pastor because i'm thinking as i was studying this this week i couldn't help but think you know we have across both services that we have like over 400 people that come to our church and i'm thinking the whole time i'm studying this there's probably going to be some of our regular church people that are going to stand before god one day and this is going to be the verdict that they're going to experience god help us listen if if that's you and you're thinking man the only reason why i came to church today is because somebody else told me to or to check something off my box or or perhaps you're like man the only reason i serve is because of you know something else other than out of a deep love for god listen you should ask god to convict you and to speak to you to make sure that you are on this narrow path you see as jesus is wrapping this up it's almost like every objection that anybody has to faith jesus is is going to address you know you hear stuff like this all the time christianity is hard jesus would say yeah it is christianity is too narrow jesus clearly yeah you're either in or you're not christianity is unpopular it doesn't fit with with culture it is counter-cultural jesus say yeah it is christianity is strange like some of the ways that it tells us to to treat people and and different things like what that's so far different than what i want to do and jesus will say yeah it is but the thing that makes all the difference and the reason why every single one of you especially you that don't know jesus we should consider him as this jesus would say but that road the road that is hard the road that is narrow the road that is unpopular and the road that is counter-cultural jesus would say but it is the road that leads to life it is the only road that leads to the kingdom of heaven that i have just taught about for the last two chapters that's what jesus would say and so as your pastor listen which road are you on and by the way i can't tell you which road you're on only you can you're either on a road to destruction and you're going to experience if you don't get on the narrow path you're going to experience exactly what jesus was talking about one day when you stand before god but listen the narrow road you say how do i get on the narrow road here's where it starts stop trusting in anything else and start trusting in what jesus has already done for you you see jesus loved you so much that he realized you could do nothing to save yourself so god's sin is only begotten son from heaven to earth to live the perfect righteous life that you could never live and then to die the death that we deserved why so that we could have a relationship with him so that we could know him and this is good news for you so that he could know you that's why i did it let's bow our heads for prayer i'm going to ask becky to come listen nobody's looking around this i know this passage can scare you and things like that that's not why i'm preaching this but it is a passage that every single one of us need to consider every single one of us need to take heed every single one of us need to listen in and so nobody looking around heads bowed hearts lifted in prayer if you're in here today and you say pastor and by the way don't worry about what anyone's thinking this is just us god is watching i'm watching but nobody else is don't worry about what anybody thinks if you're like pastor i'm afraid i think i'm on this wide road the the easy road the one that leads to destruction the road that i don't want to be on if that's where you are the road to destruction if you say pastor i want to be honest before you and that's the road that i'm currently on or i have questions and afraid i'm on that road if that's where you are today would you please slip up your hand high enough for me to see it yes i see those hands high enough for me to see it i see hands going up in this place yes i see it listen yes listen if you think you're on that that wide road and and you have questions about getting on the the narrow narrow path listen today can be the day stop trusting stop trying to trying to trust in your works and and trust in how you can live and trust in all those things all you have to do is stop and trust in and maybe you raised your hand listen as the music's playing we got pastors down front that would love to show you from god's word how you can be on the narrow path so that one day when you stand before god and all of us are going to be there that you do not have to stand before him and hear the most terrible verdict that we heard today father blessing this invitation time speak to our hearts
