NerdWallet Compare, Inc. NMLS 1617539. This is the Rich Eisen Show. The Rich Eisen Show. Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. Bryce Young being benched two games into the season and 18 games overall.

It still is one of the most stunning benchings I can recall. Today's guests, ESPN NFL analyst, Lewis Riddick, senior writer for the MMQB, Albert Breer, Hockey Hall of Famer, Brian Leach. And now, it's Rich Eisen. That's what I'm talking about.

Hockey Hall of Famer, Brian Leach. I like hearing that. Certainly is a native New Yorker.

That's later on in hour number three of this three-hour extravaganza. I like to call the Rich Eisen Show. Most people do. What do other people call it? You know what? I don't want to know. All I know is that you just watch us, listen to us, and appreciate us in that order. Love it. Not really.

At any rate, long story short is welcome. Three hours on this program. Lewis Riddick first up from ESPN. Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated. And tonight's prime video broadcast of Patriots at Jets to kick off week number three of the National Football League. Lewis is calling one of the final games of week number three. It's a Monday nighter. They don't want to call it a doubleheader because they're games going on at the same time. A two-banger? A little staggered. I guess so.

I don't know. And we already hit that one one of the games yesterday with Joe Burrow and Dan Quinn as our guests and the commanders at the Bengals. The other game that's going on on Monday night is Jaguars at Bills.

0-2 at 2-0. And so Lewis is calling that game and he'll be joining us shortly to have a conversation about all of that as well as Bryce Young being benched and the rest of week three that begins tonight. And Albert Breer is part of that broadcast again on prime video which you can see right here on Roku. 844-204-rich is the number to dial and Brian Leach is joining us because it's been 30 years since the magical 1994 Stanley Cup run of the New York Rangers, the Blue Shirts, and I remember that man. So Brian will be joining us. The king of Connecticut will be joining us in hour number three of this program. Good to see you over there Christopher.

Hey Rich. I'm glad we can actually talk about Albert being on prime video. I had no idea we were breaking news last week when he zoomed in from Miami. He was like yeah well we haven't really talked about it yet.

Well too bad, too late. Good to see you over there Jay. Good to see you. Hey thanks for having me on. TJ Jefferson, good to see you. How are you?

I'm good. You mean we don't have any superstar quarterback calling in in three minutes? No we don't. We're slipping. No we don't.

Nor do we have any Minnesota Timberwolves shooting Unbeknownst to You videos to get all over you. By the way I've got a great bet for me and Kat when Dallas plays the Eagles. That's later on right?

He doesn't. Actually I'm going to get in on that so I can join in. We'll discuss that later on in this program. We got lots to do here today. So much to do here today.

844-204-rich is the number to dial. But let us start today's program with a Thursday night preview presented by T-Mobile right here on the Rich Eisen Show. It kicks off tonight on Thursday Night Football which last week had the Dolphins and the Bills for our viewing. And tonight it's the other half of the American Football Eastern Conference with the Patriots visiting the Jets. And I think one thing that we can say for sure coming into this game is that the Patriots are not your NFL homecoming game this year. And I think that was the conversation going into the season.

I think that's why a lot of people who play a pool named after Jeff Probst's show that I think returned for season 95 last night in a premiere that Coop watched. Oh. Only half because you know it was a little late. But the Patriots blew up a lot of people's survivor pools by beating the Bengals. You're raising your hand even as a Patriot fan, huh? Yeah, absolutely.

Okay. The Patriots shocked the Bengals. The reason why the Bengals are 0-2 in many ways is because the Patriots went in and hit them in the mouth and played excellent situational football, which we had to wonder would the Patriots suffer from Bill Belichick no longer being their coach in the situation that we're in right now.

They're their coach in the situational football department, takeaway department, special teams department, running the football department, not making the mistakes, letting you make the mistakes department. And so far the Patriots have proven stout. Running the ball down your throat, Jacoby Brissette making smart veteran decisions when he can. They do seem to be very passing game challenged still a little bit. I'll bet. Pop Douglas's numbers are looking like first drive of the season numbers, not two games into the season numbers, two catches, 12 yards.

He was fully bangled. Yeah, last week against Seattle wide receivers had three catches. So that appears to be an issue certainly when you're taking on Sauce Gardner in a short week. And unfortunately for New England, they are significantly banged up on the offensive line. Their left tackle and left guard out for tonight.

They are already been ruled out for this evening in their contest. City So, by the way, that's how you pronounce his name. Everybody calls him City Sal. But again, New England's fantastic media relations department headed up by my friend, Stacy James.

They give you actual hooked on phonics pronunciation guides where you can hit the name and listen to how it's pronounced. Oh, that's great. Yes, indeed. Are you going to play it for us right now?

No. Verderian Lowe, he is out as well. Your left tackle and left guard out.

Is that bad? Juwan Bentley, your linebacker right in the middle out. Yeah, torn peck I think. But I'll tell you what, they got Keyon White and now you understand why, you know, maybe they were willing in a way to ship Matthew Judon out the door. Because they got a guy who can wreck the game on the defensive line.

They're good. The one thing I'm wondering, does Gerard Mayo have in the department that Belichick had coming out of every ounce of his being is a sincere, rabid dislike of the New York Jets. I'm wondering if that has been passed down, like blood rivalry. We are not going to lose to this team. And as a matter of fact, sort of like Hans Gruber hitting the car of Sergeant Al Powell again, over and over and over again with a rocket. Will that be the sensibility of the Patriots coming into tonight?

Because that's the way it has been. And as a matter of fact, the Patriots beat the Jets 15 consecutive times until last year's final Belichick game as head coach of the Patriots. That is the most unkind cut for Bill is that in his final game of the Patriots, the Jets got him. All it did was just cost the Jets a costly draft spot in a season that was over, as we know, four snaps into it last year.

And then that's how the Jets come into tonight. They have 100% the more talented roster. They have 100% the more decorated and veteran quarterback. They have 100% far more offensive weapons that can keep you up at night and break a game open.

100%. They've got number 20 out of the backfield and a member of the backfield who is 20. Both of them who can score touchdowns as they did last week against the Tennessee Titans to help the Jets avoid the dreaded 0-2 start. Jermaine Johnson, one of their young pass rushers, blew out his Achilles four days ago in Tennessee.

The idea that maybe the Jets and Hassan Riddick could come to terms on a contract that would bring Hassan out of the backfield, Hassan Riddick could come to terms on a contract that would bring Hassan out from his holdout because Jermaine Johnson is now done for the season, that is what we call a dream of the pipe. Because Jets ain't budging apparently and Hassan is not going to be there tonight to try and make Jacoby Brissett's night a little tougher. So the Jets should win this game and that's a dangerous thing to say. A short week, the Patriots are coming in with a run first mentality and their left side of the line is out. As a matter of fact, the only member of their offensive line that doesn't have an injury designation coming into tonight is their right guard Layden Robinson. Two are out and two are questionable and Layden's just like, what do you want from me? I'm feeling good.

Super. So that's going against, you know, the Jets defensive line with Quinnen Williams and the rest of them. They should win the line of scrimmage.

They should win the night. The Patriots played an extra quarter on Sunday. I know the Jets took a plane flight home from Tennessee, but I'd rather take a plane flight home from Tennessee than play an extra quarter of football on a short week with your left tackle and your left guard out. But that's exactly the type of situation where the Patriots in the past and already in their first two weeks this season are like, whatever, whatever. We're a team. We're a team and we play team football and we're situationally smart. You make the mistake, we won't and we'll come out on top and you look at the scoreboard and say, as we walk to the locker room with a victory formation, what the hell just happened? And that's happened more times than I can count between the Jets and the Patriots in the past. But the Jets should win this football game and they should go to two and one with a game against Denver coming up and head off to London at three and one and I'll be sitting there in the booth in Tottenham with Kurt Warner calling Jets and, uh, and the Vikings. And the Jets are right there with their home opener with an opportunity to win two of their first three games in the first 11 days of the season and kick back and watch the rest of the division and conference try and beat each other up. While the Patriots are already just two games in, seemingly playing with house money in the house of the Jets. And that's the way I'm looking at tonight's game. If the Patriots are two and one after three games, I mean, that would be unreal.

I'll be happy and sad at the same time. Well, cause I know you feel like you need a better draft choice in order to supplement a team that doesn't have an opportunity to go deep into a season. One would think right with the current roster. And there's a lot of deficiencies on the roster and having more draft capital, better draft capital, obviously good for rebuilding and retooling around, uh, the eventual starting quarterback. I understand that, but you can always get a game-changing player at 15 instead of 10 or get a game-changing player at 14 instead of eight and keep things moving in a, in a, in a positive direction and have your new coach, who's the guy following Bill Belichick, get a certain sensibility for you in the fan base to root for and trust in and have Drake may sit, if that's what you need.

Yeah. I think honestly, this season is not about wins and losses. It's about being competitive and developing and showing growth. Which may be the reason why, um, the Panthers are completely behind the eight ball in their situation is they wanted to be competitive and show growth with their first overall drafted quarterback. And they're now trying to be competitive and grow while admitting the kid is overwhelmed or potentially undercutting his confidence and our belief in the fact that they believe in him. And they're the ones who are now going to be completely behind the eight ball, because we all think Bryce Young has got to go somewhere else, maybe to find somewhere. You see, the reason why I'm bringing all this up is that's not the case scenario you want to have.

You want to have a situation where, yeah, Bill's gone. We'll still beat the jets. We're still going to be competitive.

We're not your homecoming. And, you know, our scouting department's good enough. We'll find Christian Gonzalez somewhere. Where do they draft him? Like 18, 19th overall?

He definitely fell a little bit. So that's what I'm saying is you can't have your cake and eat it as opposed to having your face just jammed right in a wedding cake. Like the Panthers are doing. I don't expect tonight to be a blowout in any certain terms. I think it's gonna be a close competitive game. And it'll be fun. It'll be fun.

It always is when these teams face each other. But the one thing I'm looking to see is, you know, does Mayo have the same bile for the Jets as Bill had? Because that might be missing tonight.

I don't know. We'll see. And that was our Thursday night preview presented by T-Mobile.

Elevate your game by tackling this football season with T-Mobile and stay connected on every play with America's largest 5G network. I do have my top five surprises through two weeks in the National Football League season. Albert Brier will join us. And we will ask him the question that David Sampson of the Nothing Personal podcast and the Leboutard world, who was here yesterday, he's like, there's no doubt in my mind David Tepper ordered the code red. And I'm like, why would he do that if the coach who's been hired is admitting two games in?

I got nothing with him. And I can't wait to ask Albert Brier what his reporting is on all of that when he joins us at the top of hour number two. Brian Leach in hour number three for the 30th anniversary of 1940 no longer being chanted at the New York Rangers. And when we come back, Lewis Riddick calling two games, one college, one pro this week. Enough time though to zoom into our show to give us his multiple two cents on all these subject matters. Week threes starting tonight.

Stream on Hulu. Oh man, watched Yankees Mariners to the bitter end last night. I saw you tweeting about the umps.

I didn't watch any of it but. The worst combination of umpiring is inconsistent at calling strikes. Right. Slow at calling strikes. That's the thing. It's like slow hand movement.

But that's just for you. I mean he's saying it to the batter. Aaron Judge struck out last night on a ball that in the yes rectangle dotted outside the rectangle and he was in the left-handed hitter's batter's box walking to first by the time ump went like that. So he was not audibly saying ball and strike and then just slow up. He was walking to first as an MVP candidate with the largest lead in runs batted in at this point of a season in major league history in over 70 years would have a sense of a strike zone.

And he's walking to first through the spot that Juan Soto had just vacated by the time that happened. Oh man. And that drives me nuts.

It's like hey pal. Be careful because he was so yoked. Oh really?

Yeah Kay and Jeff Nelson who's great at calling games too with Kay. They were joking how he was baby oiling up his uh his hockules before the game wearing a Smedium. Jim Wolf. Oh my god.

Hey Jim can you just do us a favor? Umpire Auditor is all over him. Dude. He missed 21 calls last night.

It's not just that it took probably an aggregate of at least 30 to 40 seconds together to make those bad calls. That's the worst combination. This guy is jacked though. I know. Back on the Rich Eisen Show radio network I'm sitting at the Rich Eisen Show desk furnished by Grainger with supplies and solution for every industry. Grainger has the right product for you.

Call clickgrainger.com or just stop by. This man's got a busy week. He's calling Miami and University of South Florida over the weekend and then he's hopping a flight to western New York and calling Jacksonville at Buffalo on Monday night for ESPN.

He's our friend Lewis Riddick. Lewis you uh you checking a bag for this uh trip? I'm good man. It's been a little bit. I'm doing good. How are you? I'm doing fine. So are you checking a bag?

Are you just uh what do you what do you do for a week like this Lewis? I usually am a no bag only carry-on guy and I've transformed into that over the past couple of years. Right.

But but this is a little bit of a long trip and I'm kind of a stylish dude so I gotta have a couple suit options. Oh look at that. I can't I can't I can't fit into one carry-on Rich and it's killing me.

It's killing me. I have to check a bag. Oh Lewis gets it. Oh imagine that a guy wants to look good on a road trip and checks a bag. Wow. I I understand that but the problem is is when we travel to get sorry to get you involved in this Lewis but I just I open the can here if you travel with somebody then then I'm not checking a bag you're checking your bag now now you're holding people up. Oh 10 extra minutes oh my goodness.

10 minutes yeah that's what it is. Yeah believe me I've been involved in those discussions before. Yeah. I used to check a bag all the time because I bring a lot of stuff.

Yeah you need options. You know there would be people who would get annoyed annoyed man. You're looking at him Lewis. Rich Eisen.

That's right that's how you gain reputations you don't want to gain reputations. Lewis Riddick here on the Rich Eisen show. Okay so let's let's dive into the conversation of the week which is Bryce Young in my estimation. Obviously Carolina 0-2 and a lot of people don't expect them to improve very much. Andy Dalton I'm sure would push back but that said you you saw Bryce Young come in and we were talking about him at the draft and now here we are 18 games into his career and he's benched. Why do you think Bryce Young got benched Lewis? How did we get here do you think? There's always look I talk about this so many times it's you know player player acquisition and player development's like a tripod there's like three phases to it right there's the there's the scouting and evaluation phase right and then there's the valuation putting a value on them and then selecting them and then there's the development and implementation part all three of those you mess up one part of it and it'll go awry you mess up multiple parts of it you set your franchise back you mess up all three and now you're looking at benching the number one overall pick and maybe sending them down the road and setting your franchise back for god knows how long that's what it sounds like has happened with them okay Bryce is a fantastic talent who was a fantastic college quarterback who you had to be honest though about where he won how he won and I'm not saying Alabama I'm saying where he won in terms of on the football field how he won the kind of environment that he really excelled in and how that was going to transfer to your place in particular because you're not scouting for the league you're scouting for your specific place and then you're looking at whether or not especially when you're talking about the valuation and selection phase okay now you're talking about you're comparing him not in a vacuum but you're comparing him to other people who are available too that you'd be bringing into your situation not everyone else's your situation and there was another guy who went right behind him right behind him who if you listen to people who are inside that building who they thought this guy is a better fit for us this guy can survive in the environment that we feel as though you need to put a quarterback in in order to win primarily from the pocket yes you need the ability to extend plays and create and throw the ball off the different platforms and be an ad lib player yeah but he can't live in that environment all the time especially when he's like 5 10 185 190 pounds you don't want him doing that and then in development and implementation phase all right can we protect him do we have a strong run game do we have some some players who around him who we can who he can throw the football to do we have a coaching staff that's competent do we have an ownership structure that's going to allow those people to go ahead and develop that guy assuming number one that you also listen to them and listen to your scouting department and selecting the guy in the first place okay see where i'm going all of this stuff all of this got screwed up all of it and that's why then when you wind up looking at the guy who was drafted right behind him who winds up having one of the best rookie quarterback seasons of all time that being cj straud and then you watch him on national tv absolutely just tear it up you're sitting there going damn and if you're an owner who feels as though it's my team and i can do what i want and there's a new coach who had doesn't have the same amount invested in brent he wasn't even there when he was selected he wasn't there now dan morgan was there the new the general manager of carolina but he wasn't calling the shots when you have people who aren't invested in that individual who you drafted number one overall it's very easy for you to go you know what it wasn't my guy in the first place sit him down but don't you think though lewis that that that canalis was hired based on his plan for bryce young i mean like that that had to be the centerpiece of of of of who was going to get hired and you know obviously there's other parts to it as to what you're going to do and what you're and you know obviously there's other parts to it as to six-year contract and and and who would who would want to come in you know and work for an individual as a reputation for one and dunning people and and and so that that's that's the question i guess i have from the here moving forward for you lewis is is how does bryce young get redeemed at this point in time like what metric by which i mean by the way this this conversation could be moot the first quarter that max crosby gets his hands on andy dalton you know in first quarter and young's out there now is a benched quarterback being asked to play so the question is what happens from here how do you see this playing out lewis oh going back to what you had said originally though about dave canal so i'm not naive enough to think he didn't tell david tepper hey i can fix him yeah i'll take the job of course i'd like them coming out of school i can i can do a lot of things with this kind of you know with this kind of athlete i can recreate some of the things he did at alabama smaller quarterbacks have survived in this league height isn't a problem his body structure isn't a problem i can do all those things of course especially considering what everyone raved about with bryce young coming out in the draft which was what was the number one thing that they said that he did better than anybody it was process it was whiteboard be able to talk about his scheme make quick decisions you know on the field and his coaches down at vam and nixon they all said the same thing about him so yeah it wasn't like he was sitting there going well i don't really believe in him i hardly doubt that that was the conversation but how does this flip it flips when you have that meeting on monday with the owner and the owner is watching cj stroud and here's everyone talking about how good cj stroud is and sees that they're maybe a favorite to like the throne kansas city and afc and he's going i want some of that i want to be talked about that way when he was the primary problem in the first place and then he just changes his mind you know it's like selling a stock buying a stock and the only reason i make that analogy is because i've heard some things like that about how business guys like that sometimes run their business and then try to come into the football world and run the football world like that which we know it doesn't work you don't do that so now how does bryce redeem himself look you're right it could flip on its head with one you know unfortunate hit and we're all hoping that doesn't happen to andy but yeah it could all change and he could be back in there but to me if i'm bryce young right now i want to get as far away from this place as possible because they've already told me what they really think now if i get back in there out of necessity because andy dalton gets hurt that isn't really because they really truly still believe in me it's because i have to not because they want me to i think how he really gets redeemed and how he really is able to clear his head and reset is to go somewhere that you know with a team where the people literally tell him hey look we want you we see what the deficiencies were with the structure you were thrust into and then the things that you need to take accountability for that you need to be better at and we're going to work from there and move forward who was it that reached out to him that i just heard recently baker mayfield a guy who bounced around to multiple teams who many people in the media thought baker's done baker's done baker's never going to be a franchise guy baker's never going to be a guy who people think can really take him to the postseason and win football games and he bounced around from cleveland to carolina to the la ran him he's been everywhere see it seemed like before he landed in in uh landed in tampa bay and now tampa bay's got to be considered one of the favorites in the nfc because of him largely because of him so it can happen but he has to find that place where he is wanted and where it really fits and there's no division between what the owner wanted what the head general manager wanted what the head coach wants what the offensive coordinator wants the quarterback coach wants i've been involved in in situations where maybe it wasn't quarterback but there were other positions where a defensive back coach or a coordinator didn't want what the general manager wanted and they were just looking for ways to cut that player down and to say look i was right you were wrong we should have never drafted this guy i didn't want him in the first place and it just creates a very toxic situation it ain't gonna happen i would you never say never i don't see it ever working for him in carolina he needs to get out of there and reset because that is one that's gonna be tremendously let's just call for what it is that's that's extremely extremely embarrassing i'm sure his confidence right now is shaken if not shot in the short term and i would want to restart louis riddick here on the rich isin show and part of the reason why young looked lost is the saints defense played uh you know cat and mouse and destroyed him and then the chargers defense did the same thing too two and oh teams that are surprising seattle is in that category minnesota is in that category you could even say the stealers are in that category give me one of those teams that you think we've seen enough to say okay that's the team we're going to get over the next 15 regular season games louis yeah the one the one that's uh look i've always been a big saints fan because i'm a fan of the way they play defense and i really do like for instance i believe in i've always believed in their car i've always believed that if he could just get comfortable and really just for him really block out the noise utilize all the weapons that he has when he has a ton of them now down there in new orleans that he could be a guy who could string together some consecutive games of consistency to where it would look like it did years ago when he was in when he was in oakland before he got injured where he was really considered to be an mvp candidate at one point in time and then i've talked to him so many times to the point where you can just see that now you know with chris and rashid and and alvin and the guys that he has down there and with now with clint cullen the plays down there and scheme that they run and the way in which it all works together that wide zone in the play-action passing game that's made for derek and that defense has always been has been badass to be to be blunt it's always been they have a bunch of killers on that side of the ball with all due respect and saying that respectfully i mean they have a bunch of guys who can play ball and now it all seems to be marrying up and the other team that i'll say that i'll say this so i think they'll sustain it the other team that is playing good football and i think it's going to get better primarily because the quarterback is going to get more and more comfortable and i said this in the off season that the new offensive coordinator in pittsburgh arthur smith loved he loved justin fields arthur's a great friend of mine i've known him for 20 plus years he loved and was intrigued and he was absolutely looking forward to working with this kid he is what he's doing for him what he's doing for him is the same type of thing we watched him do for ryan tana hill when ryan took over from mariota when they were all together in tennessee when arthur was the oc there and as justin continues to play faster more decisive throwing the football with better better and better accuracy he's always been able to throw the deep ball outside the numbers as he's able to attack all quadrants of the field meaning i'm going to exploit you between the numbers too look out for this team look out because we know what he can do running the football we know what he can do out of structure that's the team that be at the beginning of the year it was justin's justin caleb chicago's going to be so happy that they shipped him out of town and got caleb he's nothing but a running back playing quarterback he'll never be this the one the one mistake you can never make in the nfl rich you know this you've been covering a long time never say never never say never never assume that every situation is just like the one that the that um that the player just left and that different situations don't affect players in different ways because what's happening in pittsburgh right now is the perfect spot for him it was perfect and it and at the end mike tomlin and omar khan are probably going to have the last laugh on this one huh well right now tomlin's saying the reason why fields is there is because russ isn't even an option to be a full participant in practice so let's just leave that aside and then any questions asked about is justin winning the job right now or can he salt it away to remove the question of russ's availability from the equation and tomlin pushes back um stridently on that lewis i think it's a little bit of like i'm not going to speak for mike no he'll give you a tongue lashing when you try and speak for me but i would say this at the risk of that happening i would say this is a little bit of like it's a little bit of mind games that mike is playing it's like look i'm not going to let justin i'm just not going to tell him yeah you got the job now justin is playing very motivated very motivated for his you know to win the job to prove people wrong to prove himself right however you want to terminate and everybody plays with a when they have a little bit of a fire under their rear end and they don't quite know whether or not they can get comfortable being uncomfortable especially in the nfl usually does spur people on to continue to try and strive and get better and better and i'm not saying he's not intrinsically motivated but right now it's working it's working for for for uh for mike the way in which he's handling this if you just want to kind of equate it to justin's performance because every week he gets a little bit better i honestly in my heart of hearts i can't for the life of me understand under any circumstance other than justin really just bombs out they leave the games or whatever i couldn't i would never be able to really reconcile in my mind why he would just put rust back in there at this point if justin doesn't do something that's so egregious to make you want to take him out of there i don't see what's happening louis right a couple minutes left with you sir uh and preparing for the monday night or you're calling with the the bills hosting the jaguars uh if you can just walk me through what you're seeing that the bills are doing right to be 2 and 0 and what's wrong with the jaguars to be 0 and 2 what you're seeing louis i think you know what i can sum it up just by saying this the bills have found their identity and it's been the one sean has been searching for for years which is i want to own the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball i want to in particular own it on the offensive side because i want to take some of the pressure off my quarterback so where he's not adding to play superman all the time running the football in particular and now they've got it they have got a great rotation of backs headed up by james cook they've got an offensive line that will bludgeon you they have a play-action passing game that will work they have tight ends that put defenses in a bad spot because of their ability to be blockers and receivers so now that you play them in base you play them in nickel and as soon as they get uh the young rookie kion coleman going and he can really complement uh shakir it's going to be dangerous in buffalo so they and defensively they've always had an identity sean is always on that side of the ball locked down and now you see all these young kids playing because all the guys that they've had hurt you know especially you know considering that linebacker bernard milano have been out and the guys have just stepped right in they were always going to be fine there so they have an identity that's exactly what jacksonville doesn't have they don't have an identity on offense their best players really are going to be the best players really haven't put their stamp on the football team and i'm talking about trevor lawrence we don't know what you're going to get from him from week to week he doesn't know what he's going to get from his wide receivers from play to play series to series week to week they haven't found that chemistry yet he hasn't really see he's would have been one of those guys who's kind of flown under the radar as far as escaping scrutiny the same way that tua gets scrutinized josh gets scrutinized dak gets scrutinized you know all these guys were 50 million plus per year quarterbacks he doesn't get scrutinized that way but it's going to start coming here soon especially if this team loses another one they go down oh four or oh and three or whatever it is they're gonna they're gonna start getting it and he's going to be the one who gets it in particular he needs to establish the identity for them as a team overall because he's the most high profile player getting paid like someone who should be able to put that team on his back when they need him to do it and he hasn't shown that he can really do that on a consistent basis like all the other big wigs can do especially at that position and until they find that identity rich it's always going to be up and down for them and doug peterson has talked about it he said himself i don't understand why we're in this position still as long as we've been together now i don't understand why we're still having some of the same issues that we're having whether it's shooting ourselves in the foot with pre-snap penalties receivers running wrong routes blocking assignment errors on the defensive side coverage breakdown miscommunications he said he doesn't get it he's perplexed and whenever a coach starts talking about that it usually is started it's something that's been generated internally in the locker room that's where it needs to get corrected so they better find an identity quick because this season is getting away from them real fast all right and lastly speaking of quick yeah quick two cents what happens tonight jets pats kickoff week three two cents on that lewis man you know i'm gonna go with the pats because i really like this defense and how it has players that can perform multiple different roles in multiple different roles and i think it could give the jets a lot of issues and the jets man they suffered a lot of injuries on the defensive side of the ball i love drawed mayo man and alex van pelt the oc is my guy that was my quarterback when i was in college and we're at pit so you know i'm a homer you know that okay very good lewis uh have a great uh uh trip down uh to eyes and show what's up sir hey how you doing rich how you guys doing we're well thank you for asking how are you doing patrick that's what we're wondering well well i'll be honest with you i'm doing fine i'm not actually a panthers fan okay but i do live in charlotte so my my thing is is i hear it from every type of fan of it's bryce young's fault it's the organization's fault um leading up to everything i kind of wanted to ask like what's your take on do you really think it's the organizationals like their their fault or is it really bryce young because my honest opinion being a non-panthers fan and living in the city is that it doesn't matter who you bring in to that organization it's still going to be a kind of turmoil atmosphere and i try to explain to these people that live here that are fans they're die-hard fans because i hear it from everywhere that you know it doesn't matter if you bring in caleb williams or uh cj stroud or whatever it's not set up for success and i really i feel like the panthers organization has transformed into what washington was with dan snyder wow i mean now that is what we call an indictment patrick now um you might let's just put it this way if if that is a a proper analogy let's hope it's just football that that's how they that that's how they're operating like dan snyder you know right right right yeah and and and truly you know we're talking about all the the coaches that he's had right since being drafted bryce young so now basically on his third coach no i did so and that's and that's part and parcel of it patrick and thank you for the call and setting up i guess this this question that we're now landing on fully you know it was we discussed it at length with former marlin's front office executive who knows what it's like to work in a front office with an owner known for meddling you know and um talking about that yesterday having a full-on conversation about is this david tepers doing who ordered the code red david samson thinks it was 100 the owner my question would be why would an owner order the code red on the player that he his family all went in on along with the staff at the time and traded away dj moore and everything like i don't have to review the litany of what the the panthers gave up and hiring a guy who no doubt said i've got this there's no way david tepa hired a coach saying um i'm either here nor there on bryce young i'm iffy let me let me get in there let me get my hands dirty before i make a decision no i mean anybody who wants the job and carolina has a full-on plan this is what i'm going to do with bryce young and then two games in and he's benched one day after the coach gave a full-throated he's my quarterback so there's a lot of questions about it right there's a ton of questions about what david tepa did and why he would want him benched it makes no sense that he would want him benched but whose fault is it obviously there's some operator error with the kid i understand that understand that but you hire a coaching staff for the kid you're all in with the coaching staff and the kid and you fire the coaching staff 11 games in i understand bryce young had only one win when they fired frank reichen everybody i'll go back to it again troy aikman had one win his first year as being a first overall drafted quarterback in the nfl that's how you screw it up you hire a coaching staff you've got the first overall pick in the draft you get in a room you make a decision we're going with that kid and then the coaching staff that you have hired to surround the kid with everything that he needs to be successful in his first year you fire them in the middle of the season total disaster and then you hire somebody else who two games in benches him either under his own volition or you're prodding i don't know i can't wait to find out the answer for all this how it did happen but yeah you can't just say i've got a plan and then 11 games and say oh there's no plan here and then at least in in in milwaukee right they did that with yanis they'd already had one in the case right they had a coach that had never really done it before and you bounce them in the middle of the season as the bucks did but you hired doc right dave canalis doesn't doesn't have doc's resume a ring years of years of playing you know decades of experience so you may have the currently wrong coach right now which is unfair to the coach but it's clearly all over the map and the worst thing for the panthers is if dalton gets hurt right away suddenly bryce young's your only other quarterback and you gotta play him now as a benched guy a guy that's been taken out because he needs a breather and now it's and now it's just like hey kid um hope you enjoyed that breather of five days of everybody wondering if you're in the right spot anymore and lewis reddick saying he's got to leave to find a new spot i hope you enjoyed that whole conversation but now that's max crosby that's christian wilkins you go to work which can happen i hope it doesn't for everybody's sake young's teppers canalis's dalton's dan morgan everybody they're probably all hoping that this is the right move but i don't know the metric by which you say bryce you're ready again and he's not going to get any reps in the season with the ones if dalton stays healthy albert breer coming up on what he knows about what the owner had to say about this benching an hour two so again you know we're going to keep talking about it because i don't recall another time where the rugs pulled out from underneath a first drafted quarterback overall drafted quarterback unless that's not the proper terminology because he is so patently unready for the moment right now and has regressed because the coaching staff you hired to surround him gets fired 11 games in and then he's got an interim staff and then after the interim staff you bring in a guy who's bringing in a new system a new way of doing things and you don't play the kid at all in preseason until at the very end against a bunch of players that aren't going to make an nfl roster and that's the way you go into the season against the saints and the chargers and that's the result you're going to see and the crazy thing is that if any way shape or form as riddick louis riddick mentioned and he might be right that the benching comes a day after cj stroud on national television looks the way he did for the texans and he's just taken off like a rocket ship if cj stroud has anything to do with the expectation level being raised for bryce young who did bryce young get his first career win against cj stroud he's beaten him he's won an o against shroud of the two wins can't make it up that's funny can't make it up and i hope the panthers aren't making it up as they go along now it's got to be a plan somewhere albert breer coming up the bigger pockets portfolio of podcasts are worthy of your investment what is the path of
