We're all doing it. So listen, again, we're so close to training camp starting all across the NFL landscape. We saw what video, there's video of Lamar Jackson arriving for work today.
Yeah, I saw him strolling into Ravens. So we're seeing that. And so we're so close to, you know, actual football being played. And then, of course, the roster decisions and news of contracts and what have you really take precedence.
So we're hunting and pecking for anything to talk about, to be straight up honest. But when the first overall pick of the draft on July 15th has yet to sign a contract and basically says, as Caleb Williams did at a local event, a charity event, I believe it's what the Caleb Cares event. It's his own foundation that I'm not handling that as contract situation. My lawyer's an attorney and everybody, the head of the Bears, everybody up there up top is handling that. That's not my position that I'm handling, as he told the Chicago Tribune. It sets off an alarm bell, certainly.
And here's the background. Here's why it may raise a bit more concern for Bears fans that are just waiting for a trap door to open and all that appears to be set up for their success that they've been dreaming about for a while might actually not materialize is because of the conversation surrounding Caleb during his final season in USC. The conversation surrounding Caleb leading up to the draft is that he is going to do things differently. He's a different sort of cat who's going to bring a different sort of sensibilities to things that are normally handled by top overall draft choices in the NFL in a certain way. Not getting an agent, also his dad thinking that maybe agencies that would sign him as a client should give him pieces of equity, that maybe teams should give pieces of equity for his services to be acquired.
None of that's happened. None of that's happened, maybe because he's chosen his own agency and he has lawyers and business types who are somewhat unnamed. I don't know if anybody knows who they are specifically handling his business and everyone's just wondering maybe just maybe this will be the final throw at the final moment just as Hard Knocks cameras are getting flipped on that he will start conducting his business in a manner that is totally unconventional that throws a wrench into the equation and thus he is not out on the field to start training camp. I don't think that's going to happen. I can't imagine that this would devolve to a certain point where Tyson Bajant would be the one taking the first snaps on Hard Knocks, that suddenly Caleb would be in the Darrell Revis Hard Knocks role back in the day.
I don't, I would be shocked, but that is why this is of interest to people and one of the reasons why we reached out to a man who covers the team for the athletic, Kevin Fishbane back here in the Rich Eisen Show. How are you doing Kevin? Hi Rich, I'm doing well and as you laid that out the beat writer in me is just thinking I hope none of that comes to be because that is a beat writer's nightmare, a contract holdout. So what is happening best you can tell right now? There are no indications that anything is amiss.
I think this is just figuring out dotting the i's, crossing the t's. Caleb, he was traveling, he was enjoying his summer so they weren't going to get anything done while he was gone. Rookies report to camp tomorrow so it could just be that once he gets in the building on Tuesday they get it all done and we could be done. I think that what's unique about Caleb Williams in this situation Rich is this is somebody who's already got cash in his bank account. He's not unlike a lot of other college football players who have come to the draft forever, he doesn't need to rush to get that bonus check.
He made a well-deserved amount of money in college and then you also have the particulars of this is just different. He does not have an NFLPA certified agent working with him. He's got a lot of people around him and so I think when they go through this contract there's very few things as you know that they can really haggle over but you might have somebody in there who's never done this before and is you know when you get a lawyer looking at a football contract they might say wait a second I'm not sure if this would fly in my law school class so I'm going to talk about x y and z so they probably have to kind of have some of those things out just because it's a different negotiation but I'm not expecting anything wild to happen that's going to keep them off the field when they practice on Saturday. Who are the people who do we know names of who team Caleb really is Kevin? We've got we've got some first names rich here and there they haven't done I'm waiting to do a meeting with them I'm surprised I haven't grabbed all the Bears reporters around for a meet and greet maybe do some get to know you games but he does have lawyers with them that are familiar with this stuff and and should have a sense of you know how to deal with it but again it's just gonna it's just different I mean everything with this guy is gonna be different now the hope for Bears fans is this is just going to be kind of a little blip that they don't have to worry about and the real quote unquote different part of Caleb with the fact that he is supposed to be a very good quarterback is what they're going to be talking about all the time with this guy so you know I just think with him as much as we talk so much about the entertainment element the commercials he does just love football you talk to everybody who knew him growing up who coached him you even you talk to scouts about him I mean you go back you watch HBO Hard Knocks from last week with the with the Giants you know they talked about too this guy just loves football and he does not seem like the person who wants anything to get in the way of being out there for the first practice as the Bears number one quarterback so it's Bob Esquire is that you're saying that's John LLC or something like that is that what Bob Loblaw from Arrested Development Henry Winkler is representing Caleb Williams that would be something else find find money in the stand so okay outside of all this then what what is what is something that you're expecting training camp to be about for the Chicago Bears this this upcoming few weeks Kevin well it's going to be how quickly does this offense look good right like they've got a quarterback who should be very good but it's a new playbook for everybody with Shane Waldron coming in so we saw a lot of hiccups in the spring because you have this combination of a rookie quarterback who's just going to take some time to learn the system and learn the cadence you know Caleb talked a lot about in college he wasn't going up to the line barking out calls like he's got to in the NFL so now he's got to learn that cadence get on the same page as offensive lineman and his receivers and tight ends meanwhile those guys are also still learning Shane Waldron's offense and by the way they're going against Matty Rufus's defense which returns nearly every starter and was a top 10 group if not top 10 if not top five and by some metrics by the end of the season so training camps you're going to have this roller coaster ride Rich where you're going to have days where fans are going to walk out of there being like oh no here we go again with the quarterback but you just have to be patient because this offense is going to get you know it's going to take some time to get there but you want to see it get there as quickly as possible of course so they can be ready to go for week one against the titans so I think for Caleb Williams it's going to be getting on the same page with the cadence stuff with his o-lineman and then with DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Odunze, Cole Kemet, showed that for DeAndre Swift you go on and on this is unfamiliar territory for those of us who cover this team to have that many skill players that you can kind of feel good about with this quarterback so I mean this there are going to be times I think this summer Rich where we're all going to be wide eyed like oh my goodness this is a Bears passing offense that looks really good that's in rhythm that's explosive and there's going to be some times it doesn't because that's just what happens with a rookie quarterback against a veteran defense. Yeah we had Jalen Johnson on Friday's show Kevin and I asked him what do you tell Bears fans who are really you know sky high right now and he said patience he asked for patience why do you think he said that? I think he's probably echoing something in the building too where they're it's a fine line of they're so excited about Caleb Williams they're so excited about Keenan Allen and the defense but they also know that when you have a rookie quarterback you're going to have a bit of a ceiling right what CJ Stroud did last year was incredible it was historic right you some Texans it's not like they were in the Super Bowl okay like so even the greatest rookie performances we've seen over the past if you go back to the the 2011 CBA you're talking Andrew Luck you're talking RG3 and CJ Stroud Russell Wilson right those are the four guys and still it's not like any of those four guys those rookie years made these incredible playoff runs they they had a great seasons they made the playoffs but there's a lot of other cases of guys who had solid rookie seasons and won seven games won eight games I think this Bears team you know you you look at the the over-unders you look at the season total stuff you're looking at a team that might be a nine-win team maybe ten they're hoping obviously to get into the playoffs I think it's everything to me Rich is building to 2025 like yes it'd be this amazing thing Caleb Williams is everything everybody has dreamed of and with this group of offensive players that no number one draft pick has had around him just takes off and this team has this magical ride but you just there just history tells us it's going to take time he's just going to have some some challenges and I talk about the new play caller you look at me before his record the past two seasons this was a really good defense last year but turnout takeaways can be fickle from year to year all those things make you realize what Jalen Johnson saying is being patient we're young we've got a rookie quarterback let's see if we can get to nine or ten wins this year and then ideally if he shows everything that CJ Stroud showed last year and some of those other great rookie quarterbacks have shown over the years you can start having a lot of fun with 2025 expectations Kevin Fishmane few minutes left with the athletics Kevin Fishmane who covers the Bears right here on the Rich Eisen show take your best guess who's going to be the Hard Knocks star that we don't see coming who's that well you talk to him you just mentioned Jalen Johnson I think that him somebody that I still don't think enough of America knows and he's got a great personality he's been outstanding with us over the years and through some lean years for the team he's interesting I'll throw out two guys on defense Rich who you know when you watch the practices at Hard Knocks you have the guys who talk the most trash and are very boisterous that's going to be Jaquan Brisker and Tyreek Stevenson two young defensive backs two defensive backs that the Bears are really excited about and are hopeful can really take jumps in year two and year three respectively for those guys so I could see those those players being people that fans outside Chicago probably don't know about but are going to be talking a lot about because some of the great greatest players and the Bears aren't like the loudest guys you know DJ Moore is not the type person who's going to be running for the HBO camera oh Montez Sweat you know you know same with him Kyla Gordon is a player I think a lot of fans should circle but again a bit of a quieter guy so I would look at some of those those louder guys and here's too rich you know you got Jonathan Owens who is going to be spending some training camp in Paris because his wife Simone Biles is obviously one of if not the greatest athlete in our generation and competing the Olympics I'd love to see HBO get a camera because if you've if you've seen videos of Jonathan Owens watching Simone Biles doing her gymnastics routines it's really cool so I maybe that'll be a little side plot if they can send them to the Olympics I love that and then of course you got the Hall of Fame visit as well that's coming up that'll be that'll be interesting and Kevin maybe maybe Hard Knox can figure this out unless you already know the answer to this we've been fascinated and put this split screen up frequently on the program we know the guy on the left when he arrived in Chicago that's Matt Eberflus and the guy on the right Jalen Johnson said that's flus that's Eberflus on the left and flus on the right do we know the genesis of of the new look Eberflus like any of that stuff Kevin yeah uh Rich the the flus you can credit uh flus's wife and daughters for that they uh he he will be the first to credit them okay he has before uh they they are tasked with that makeover it's it's been it's been very impressive flus and I had different off seasons I went with the Rich Eisen nice and he went with the the flus lucky him gets to do that um yeah we've never met Kevin I'm just assuming you don't have the options that he has you know exactly okay or maybe he wishes he could he could have the Rich Eisen maybe I doubt it but I I appreciate you and uh you and I are in similar boats I appreciate that so it's his how old are his daughters his his wife and daughters have told him dad dad you know you got to figure this thing out yeah he's got daughters starting in college and one who I believe has just graduated and uh they they were on it they said all right uh they've got the bears have a guy uh goes by funk funk bar barber shop he did he's done gms and head coaches here over the years and and I think he's been a part of this as well so yeah I imagine there's two guarantees for hard knocks rich it's going to be a conversation about the makeover and you're gonna probably see flus on the golf course now he doesn't golf season starts but that is his favorite thing to do aside from being with his family when it's not the season is to golf so you can totally see that an episode begins and he's walking to the tee box with ryan poles and the two of them are chatting now the hard knocks has yet to ask me for what I think should be the b-roll or some of these things but I'm just okay I wouldn't be surprised to see loose on the golf course and then maybe in the barber's chair you can see those those clips I like it very good kevin appreciate the two cents let's uh we'll we'll chat as the uh the season approaches appreciate it let's do it thanks you're terrible you get a higher cap so you're getting more strokes if oh so I should post you should post you actually kind of want to have a high score every now and then because then it kind of inflates your cap and if you're playing better you still get two extra strokes what's your what's your handicap right now I'm a 9.1 right now geez it's gone up I got it up got as low as 7.9 okay Flew's he's not posting and I don't blame him you don't want to be a head coach who's like posting your scores right yeah yeah oh that just gives the fans another of course it's time to play golf but quarterback driven league right yep last year last year they turned the page from tom brady and at the time when brady was going on the old boat parade and his avocado tequila and what have you we all thought that his successor would be one of the guys who helped take him out and kyle trask help him out of the facility and as it turned out it was baker mayfield and that was truly one of the more surprising plot twists in a sport that just provides them non-stop and baker wound up taking them to the playoffs although the last few weeks of the season didn't make it feel like they would eliminate the defending nfc champs as they did convincingly but the defending nfc champs fell apart at the end of the season and then they go into detroit and you know played very well but the final interception of the season for baker mayfield sealed the deal as they were driving to try and tie that game right it felt like they were about to they the way they were playing yeah the way they were playing yeah so it's baker's world and here he was which show was he on the mike kalta show um and uh this is what he had to say about returning to tampa tell you what you're having a lot more fun when you're not getting shipped off to different places like a piece of berry launcher i'll tell you that yeah so when i got embraced when i got embraced at tampa uh it it made a world of difference and you know it's just like kind of always always i've always played always enjoy it i mean it is a game yes it is my job but uh i love it so much so why not i've always wore my emotions on my sleeve and so let people embrace that and that's why i'm so excited for having more years to come in tampa for people to just get to know me a little bit better um truly realize that that's not just a show on the field that's who i am when it comes down to the football aspect and um i love it i do anything for our team and um our locker room guys know that uh it's just uh um a beautiful marriage he in tampa right now and they they they did i mean they did the work their general manager did the work jason like did the work i kept the guys and i mean kept them they they everyone thought mike is gonna be out of there and you know they bring baker back and now mike's back and it's kind of a sneaky fun offense led by baker obviously well the guy who was coordinating it was the one the panthers chose to hire as their new head coach now that's the question that we were kind of hunting and pecking with um rashad white last week so i'll ask you this question the running it back you're more confident in to win the division again i like this dallas or tampa you're more confident oh in the running it back tampa really okay are you the same over there too well if you if you go by the one loss record that i gave because i was being realistic i'm like every single person that's called and played this game i have the cowboys winning 11 um so i you know the way that nfc east works it's hard to win back to back so i'm thinking maybe the eagles giants are going to be better no but the eagles didn't win the division eagles are really good you're saying to have a repeat there are two division i think two division winners that have that that ran it back where they they one of them we didn't expect them to just completely run it back and just add some other uh players to the mix and didn't and tampa truly are running it back they are they they went ahead and signed a whole bunch of people resigned a whole bunch of people that a whole bunch of observers thought they wouldn't be able to do and they did it i'm including levante david too i like their chances of running it back better better than dallas yeah how about you guys so much uncertainty what's going on in dallas you look at tampa's schedule again um lenny and panama city gave him a 20-0 mitch and dallas gave him an 11 and 6 starting with the commanders i'm just looking at the lions and they are home they've got a great schedule too they are home in three of their first four and you you take a look at how many times they've gotta go west they're at the chargers and at the cowboys they're home i mean they don't i mean the cold day it might be in new york yeah but they're not gonna blow me away i feel like they're nine eight ten and seven at best but the schedule's not bad there's a lot of indoor games and there's a i mean seriously you want to talk about going in the in the cold weather the first week of november at kansas city and then the friday the uh pardon me sunday after thanksgiving at the giants might be cool and december 1st in carolina but other than that they're home for the raiders they're at the charges at the cowboys home for the panthers home for the saints to end it and they're three out of four at home to start and their last two are at home it's a good schedule yeah but right there in the middle yeah but we don't know if they're good enough to hang with the ravens the chiefs and the 49ers class like they're not up there yet maybe they take the step forward if at all they were in the final eight last year maybe i mean but that was the easiest playoff quote-unquote upset to predict last year that they were going to beat the eagles let's go to ron and savannah georgia and then we're going to play a little overreaction monday what's up ron hey how's it going rich what's going on ron and savannah georgia what's going on and i love that place well this i'm a first-time caller i watch your show every day and i even watch the reruns every day i appreciate that we all do first the
