This is the Truth Network. Coming to you from an entrenched barricade deep in the heart of central North Carolina, Masculine Journey After Hours, a time to go deeper and be more transparent on the topic covered on this week's broadcast.
So sit back and join us on this adventure. The Masculine Journey After Hours starts here now. Welcome to Masculine Journey After Hours. We're in the middle of a topic of talking about mentors in our life, and it just so happens we all pick the same mentor.
Well how could that happen? That that's just got to be intervention of some sort. Yeah. Don't know what could be done. But no, I didn't.
I just said intervention. I didn't say it was that. I just said intervention. We just all had. Great minds think alike, right?
Well, our minds do. Oh my god. We had an adjective in there we did really neat. Anyway, we're talking about mentors in our life, and we have so far been talking about our good friend Harold, who has loved on us well over the last many years. I don't even know how long you've been with us.
Harold, do you remember how long you've been with us in this group? No, I don't. It's been a good trip. Robby, do you remember what it was? When it was?
I started in 16, I think, and Harold was with us then. I think you were just getting ramped up. I was going to say 14. Yeah, I think it was around 14, yeah. 14 or 15.
So man, it's been ten, eleven years, man. It's been a while. What a ride. Yep. That's just back when he was a young whipper snapper.
Yeah. Man, it was all the way back in your 70s. Yeah. I think I remember being seven. Perspective or something.
Yeah, perspective. But anyway, we have been talking about our friend Harold and playing clips that remind us of our relationship with him and how he's mentored us over the years. And so, Andy, you have the first clip of this show if you'd like to tell us something.
So, my mentor is actually Robby. Just kidding. No. Yeah, before I get into my clip, I just wanted to just make some points. I mean, Harold, I just connected with him when I first came, and, you know, we had similar careers.
I've been in IT, and he was in programming, very similar, and we had similar anchor problems that we've worked through over time, and this ministry has been a big help in that. And I remember, you know, there's so many quotes. But one of the ones that we were talking one day, and we were just talking about perspectives of people. And his point was, you know, if The unbeliever. Don't see God in everything.
But the believer who's really connected and seeking God sees God in everything. And I thought that was a powerful statement and and resonated with me. But My clip is from this is kind of, I know it's one of his favorite movies. It comes from Secondhand Lines. But it's not the clip that we use most of the time.
We used that last week, Jim. And you weren't here, but we talked about it a little bit. It's the bar scene. If you've seen Secondhand Lines, if not, you should see it. It's really cool and it really gets into identity and purpose and that kind of thing.
But this clip is kind of after that. Hubb, after this fight, goes and talks to these kids that he got in a fight with and kind of counsels them and gives them the speech that he gives to young men. And um, Walter, his Nephew. Nephew. Great nephew.
He's come to live with them, and his mom's not done him right, and his dad's not around. And he's wanting to be fathered, and he's wanting to be mentored, and he's wanting to be loved. And the first thing you'll hear is kind of. Garth, Hubb's brother, telling him when he's given the talk to these young guys, kind of what's going on. And then he kind of says, you know, you'll probably get that speech too.
And then you'll hear that speech and it'll give a perspective of Hubb's life and what he's learned and what's important to him, particularly truth, I think is what he's talking about here. What's she saying to him? He's giving him his or what every boy needs to know about being a man speech. A lot of men have heard that speech over the years. Will he give that speech to me?
Oh, I guarantee it. Assuming he's still around. It's the middle of the night. What's the matter? What are you doing here?
Got something to say to me? Spit it out. What happened to her Uncle Hump? What happened to Jasmine? I have to know.
She died. Died in childbirth hurting the baby. What did you do? I went back to the only life I knew back to the Legion. For the next 40 years, there was always one more war to fight.
Then I got old and came here. Here I am. Yeah, I am. You cold, son? You better hear.
Let me go inside. Those stories about Africa, about you. They're true, aren't they? Doesn't matter. It does too.
Around my mom, all I hear is lies. I don't know what to believe in. If you want to believe in something, then believe in it. Just because something isn't true, that's no reason you can't believe in it. The long speech I give to young man sounds like you need to hear a piece of it.
Mr. Peace.
Sometimes. The things that may or may not be true. are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically Good. It's an honor.
courage and virtue. In everything. The power and money, money and power. mean nothing. that good always triumphs over evil.
And I want you to remember this, that love... True love never dies. You remember that boy? Doesn't matter if it's true or not, you see. Man should believe in those things because those are the things worth...
Believe in it. Got that? is a good speech. I think so. Thanks.
When are you gonna give me the rest of the speech?
Well you're almost a man. You promise? Wait one minute here, wait. I can't be a good man until you give me the rest of the speech, right?
So Harold, you've given us that speech. You've given me that speech. Just a piece. Yeah, just a piece. We want the rest of the We expect you around a long time to continue to speak into our lives.
Um Just so much of w uh What you say, you know, where he's talking about what things are important, you always focus on the things that are important. um, and what matters. And we we you know, we know the story of your love and your passion for your wife. And it encourages us not only for, you know, our our spouse or um just people in general and that rubs off But um I I'm not a poem writer. But I I do have a little bit of uh Just did a description of who Harold is.
So he is Harold Dyer. He has fought in many Zipper Merge battles and successfully entered the freeway in many states. He has led hundreds of programmers into business with everything from punch cards to keyboards using COBOL and JCL.
Okay. He has seen the headwaters of the Adkin and composed many poems that no diminutive man has ever written before. He has won and lost at least a dozen pickleball tournaments, killed many paper boxes, and loved only one woman with a passion that a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who he is. That's amazing.
That was good. Thank you. Thank you. That was well done, Andy. I have to give you that.
Oh, thank you so much. Ed Waterson, yeah. That's a lot of fun.
So, for the listener, that was a custom version of Hub McCann stating who he was to those young punks he beat up. Oh, that was good. That was good. I got it. Yeah, that was a good surprise, Andy.
Especially for those of us in the bar scenes, but he talked about it. Yeah, we see that every boot camp. You had it down. You had the cadence down. That was good, man.
We hear it about every third show. Yeah, we have it. Jim will forget and he'll play it again at the next show every day. We haven't played this in a minute. It was literally like a minute ago when we played it.
Well, thank you. Thank you. The next person, Danny, you have a microphone in front of you. You want to tell us a little bit about your clip or. Yeah, the clips come from the show NCIS and.
another genre of but it is a detective show, Navy detective show. And the interchange is is between Jethro Gibbs, who's been the team leader of this this Group of detectives for many years, and his one of his understudies, Tim McGee. And they are in Alaska. They're on one of their adventures. I mean, these guys have been through some stuff together and everything, but.
Gibbs has been suspended. And he's not going back. But their interchange is beautiful. And there's a couple of different points I want to pull out and that kind of thing. But that, you know, Gibbs is poured into Tim and Tim is poured back into him.
And so it was just a I saw it over the weekend. This is one of those shows I've been binge-watching because there's like 158 seasons, I think. Harold was a young man when he came out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Harold remembers when episode one came out.
But anyway, you can play a clip and we can talk about it.
Okay, here we go. Gibbs.
Okay. Yeah, never have been better. I know what you mean. This place is pretty special. Can't wait to come back one day.
Well, I hope you do.
Well, it's ready. Just waiting on us. I'm not going back then. To work?
Well, that too. I'm not going back home. You stay in here? For how long? Not sure.
Plus, you realize we're in the middle of nowhere, right? We are 50 miles from anyone or anything. Not a bad thing. Boss, this is crazy. What are you thinking?
I'm thinking I don't have another boat left to build.
Well then we'll find you another hobby. I'm not looking for a hobby. What are you looking for? My gut's telling me I'll know when I find it. And you think you'll find it here?
I don't know. I don't I hope whatever I'm feeling. This A sense of peace. I have not. had this since Shannon and Kelvey died.
And I'm not ready to let it go. And that's it. I could not have hoped. Is there anyone better to watch my back for the past 18 years than you, Tim? I love you, Matt.
I want it too. I must be a muke. I already am.
So, what you can't see is you hear the water around them. They're out there fly fishing, Robby. They're out there in the middle of a river in Alaska out there fly fishing. But what Gibbs says is he says, this peace that I've found. I hadn't had since his wife and his daughter got murdered.
Long time ago. And you know, he did some things. I mean, he took care of it. And but So you'd have to watch all the show, but but what he said is this peace this feel of peace I've got I'm going to live in it as long as I can. And you know, when I get around Harold, Harold is such a peaceful guy.
I know we've talked about his zipper immersion, and you know, we pick at him about kickboxing. You know, he talked about that and all those things, but the air around him is so peaceful. And he always has that calming effect on whatever's going on for the most part. And you know, I mean, he talks about JM, you know, and and that kind of thing. But the whole idea is that.
Wow. Don't know where that come from. Uh but uh It's a piece. that you know and he's always giving words that that just kind of hits a spot. Mm-hmm.
So here we log ya. Thank you. Back catch you a hundred. Uh Well, I'm going to finally jump in here. It took about two hours for me to say something, but it's hard to keep up with you guys.
You guys move about 500 miles an hour.
So I'm just trying to trying to keep up. Maybe I needed to learn how to do a zipper merge and go jump on in there.
So I was uh talking to a guy last night And he's 37 years old. And he was talking about how He didn't really get what he was looking for from his father. And his father's a big construction guy, and you know, he's moving at the speed of light, and he's always about the next job and the money and all that. And, you know, his son was like, Okay, dad, I got that, I get it. Can I go with you?
Can I be a part of your life? Can I know about you? And, you know, he never got his. talk from his dad like, you know, we were talking about in the clip. He never got that speech to say, Yes, I finally see you as a man.
I can bring you into my world and whatnot. Uh, so I told him. And hopefully this was words of wisdom, you know, from the Bible. Even though you might not get validation from your dad, Hopefully, you can around yourself with other father figures that the Holy Father has given you. Um because we men are not perfect.
But we have to follow the perfect one.
So I think just to kind of come back to Harold, I think Harold has been kind of like a father figure to the guys in this group. And to anybody listening, if you don't have a Harold in your life, You gotta get one. And don't look to the Greek club, your Alpha Phi Alphas, or whatever. Don't look towards the sports teams. Definitely don't look towards social media.
Go to church, find a Bible study, find a small group. I guarantee you, there are heralds out there. I found a few heralds in my groups at Lawndale Church, Pinedale Church, Center Grove. Yes, shout out to those guys. Definitely a Wednesday in the word.
Robby goes there every now and then. He's a father figure.
So, you guys got to get a herald in your life. Look at the camaraderie. Look at the jubilation that you hear out of these guys. This is nothing fake. And that's another reason why I didn't want to jump in because I'm the new guy here.
And this is organic. If you can see this, we're streaming live.
So watch it on. On whatever platform we're on. But if you want to get this kind of feeling, if you want to get this kind of camaraderie, get a herald in your group. But also, you have to get into a group to where you can find a herald.
So, again, find a good church. There are plenty out there. Go to truthnetwork.com. They have a good list of good people to follow up there. But find a small group and find a herald in your life, and you'll be blessed.
Thank you, Jamal. We appreciate it. Another place you could maybe find a Herald is at a boot camp. Yeah. Right?
Because we all have gotten closer to boot camp. And go to masconejourney.org to register for the upcoming boot camp, November 20th through 23rd. But art. We are up to your clip, my friend. Yes, thank you.
Well, I decided to go um way back in the vault or or way back in time and and I selected um The first Laurel and Hardy movie for my clip. And I can just imagine a young Harold and his crew going to the theater there in Huntsville, Alabama, and watching silent movies.
So this one is for you. It's not silent, right?
Well, it's a silent movie. That didn't work on the radio real well. Kind of. Oh, no. I had to clip it, and I was like, wait a second.
It won't work. But there's words. I mean, there's music. Yes. And it's really amazing how the music kind of sets the.
You can almost see the picture by listening to the music. I'm hoping. Just picture whatever you picture in black and white, because that's what it's coming at you.
Well, I'll go ahead and describe this scene of the moment.
So in this scene, Laurel Laurel is getting um evicted from his little boarding room and there the the words on the screen say um Uh too poor to buy uh um metal polish for a thumbtack. Laurel. Quoted by Stan Laurel.
So he was giving thrown. He didn't have any money. He was being thrown out in the street. And the landlord lady actually hit him with a broom and knocked him out in the street. And he fell down.
He sat back up. He was having little. stars around his head. There are, you know, that little noise that that they make they make for that. And uh we'll hear it in a minute.
Yeah. So then there was this scene where there was an apparition of. women, dancing women, circling a round stand as he was sitting in the in the in the middle of the road. These ghostlike women were dancing around and one of them came over to him and and was about to kiss him, And and Stan woke up and It wasn't a woman, it was a stray puppy looking his face.
Okay. So, yeah. You had to get a dog in there. Lucky dog. All right, I got you.
Any lucky dog is the name of the movie. This will be the first playing a silent movie on radio, listening to the clip. Let's see what this next 52 seconds is like. Here we go. Uh Yeah.
Yeah. Are they dancing now? Yeah, you need to narrate this. Is it? Yeah.
That's hard to go back to the Good point. Mm-hmm.
Uh Wow, it felt like I was there. Do you remember that? It was amazing what they could do, really. It was. And So does that sound familiar?
They're Harold Music and Anybody who's never seen Laurel and Hardy movies, you need to go online and pull them up. I mean, it is amazing how funny those two guys are. And of course they have talkies as well. Oh yeah. He sent me that.
That was later. Did you help invent the technology there to talking movies? Like a microphone. Yeah. For us.
Yeah. But the lucky dog.
So Stan and his puppy, they form an instant bond and they go through several comedic adventures together and Hardy comes in. Hardy is playing a stick-up man and he tries to actually rob Laurel in this movie. But anyway, the reason I chose this clip was it reminds me of something about Harold and You know, I've got my dogs, my my Bill and my Max, and I bred them and had puppies and the puppies were headed off to uh canine school and um when we was talk I was talking to Harold about it. He says, uh, well, how are you gonna Separate the puppies from Bella. How how are you going to do that?
I said, Oh no, the guy said he's gonna come to my house and pick him up Take him away. Harold got a look of concern. He didn't... He didn't like that idea too much. Um Yeah.
He said, maybe that's not a good way to do that.
So I don't know, I looked on the internet and all I could find about separating a mother dog from her puppies was the idea that you kind of take one away at a time, maybe take remove one, she's still got the others, remove another one, and she's like, okay, this is what happens, you know, they go away one by one and doesn't bother him too much maybe, but um Harold had the idea, he said, instead of the man coming and getting them. Why don't you take them up there and take Bella, and she can see where they are and she can say goodbye to them there, and she'll know that they're okay.
So that's what I did. And it worked. It worked really well. And I just can't imagine the bewilderment of a really smart dog.
Somebody comes and all their puppies disappear and she doesn't know how to do it. You might even say a lucky dog. Yeah, yeah, lucky dog. Right.
So I just wanted to say Harold is really a smart man and he really does, like Sam said, he has a big heart. And, you know, just watch your fingers if you get, you know, you don't got his fingers too close to his mouth there. But yeah, he may come across as huffy and gruff sometimes, but that's not the real Harold. No, it's not. It's not.
Well, thank you, Art. Rodney. It was. Yeah. That's the thing that I always found amazing when I started.
you come here and I was just some guy on the side just listening and then you'd eventually, oh, come and talk and you kind of introduce yourself and you do more. But Harold was just was already here and he was just on the sideline. He was just kind of there and then he'd say something now. Say something once in a while. Just Um What are you doing here?
He just loves the men that are here. He loves being with the men and hanging out with the men. And then What's really wonderful is when you just listen enough, you're like Oh wow, that's really good. He just has the thing to say at the right time. He doesn't sit there and just over talk himself.
like we like to do. But he'll come in and he'll just say a few words. You know, Oh, that's really good. I don't know how he does it, but he just comes up with things. I guess he's just been around a little while, but.
He can say the most warming things that you've ever heard and you're just like, Oh, wow, that's that's really, really important. I need to think about that. I need to live in that. And I don't know how that he does it because I mean, he's had some experiences in life, but I don't think he's had anything different than a lot of us. He reads the Bible, he knows the Bible, he understands the Bible, he'll make his comments.
He just comes at it from a little different twist and take than what most of us have. And that's what I love about listening to him and being here with him is that It's just being able to go, wow. Huh? I never thought about that. That's really good.
And he doesn't take a half an hour like I'm taking right now just to say something. He just says it in a few words, and you're like, It's already done. And they got what did he say? Because it's already done. You got to go back and you got to listen to it again.
It's just wonderful to have a friend like that that's this into God, the Bible, and what's going on that And he loves being with all the men here. It's just great having him around. And Harold. And just like how warm he is. He just like the message you sent when I went in for surgery.
It's just that's just wonderful. That's loving. That's just. just who he is and You know, it it's one thing to sit there and expect and say that's what I want. But you don't always get that.
But with Harold, you get it all. Thank you, brother. Thank you, Rodney. Harold, take us out for the end of the show. We got a little over a minute left.
Is there anything you'd like to share or anything you'd like to talk about? If not, we'll we'll wrap it up here in a second. But what's on your heart? I've been really touched by the remarks that you guys have made. I love you all.
And I'm hoping that the Lord's going to give me. a lot more time so that I can keep coming on Tuesday nights. Uh my friend Art uh Jan doesn't like me driving at night any more and so If it weren't for art, I wouldn't be here, I guess. And so I really appreciate. him allowing me to continue to be a part of this.
Oh love you guys.
Well, thank you, Harold. We love you as well. We would love to see you at the next boot camp. I know I say that a lot, and the reason I talk about the boot camp a lot is because it's life-changing. Not that the camp is, it's because God is.
And God's always there, and He's always active, and He has something in store for you there. I have no idea what it is, but He knows what it is. And I promise you, if you take the time to set that aside and go, you will not be disappointed. God will reach out to you in a way that you don't expect. Go to masculinejourney.org.
Our next boot camp is coming up November 20th through 23rd in Royston, Georgia. We'll talk with you next week. Love somebody well and let yourself be loved by the Father. Yeah. This is the Truth Network.
Yeah.
