Welcome into the Winklerverse. I'm BW as I'm known on the streets. Want to talk about the trade deadline, underwhelming for the brewers again, but is it really their fault? I don't think so. I think they tried and I think other teams had other ideas.
Top story, brewers get a couple of arms. Tarek Skubel, not one of them. Cubs get a lot of arms. Putting together a pretty decent staff there.
Something to worry about, perhaps. But All in all, it was probably not the trade deadline that we had hoped for. which is the trade deadline that we are used to.
So we'll get into that here. On into the Winklerverse. Before I get started, there's a lot of stuff that I had to say about the trade deadline. It's all kind of been buried on my social media because now I'm in COVID fights again in the year 2026. Um the lockdowns, all that stuff.
You know, probably a little over Overdone, but we didn't know what it was, and it will never happen again. Aaron Rodgers bitching about not Dr. Anthony Fauci, but Tony Fauci. Because he's a badass motherfucker. Um, and now everyone says, see, Aaron was right, right about what?
Millions are still dead from COVID. Right about what? Also, it is 2026. If you guys are still pissed that you had to carry a vaccination card to work. Uh, get over it?
All right. Back onto the baseball, joining me. Fellow outlaw Aaron. Andrew Wagner.
Sorry. It's all right. I just talked about Aaron Rodgers. And his buddy Towney? Do you like my hat?

And get your Hats, t-shirts, jerseys, whatever you want. Sweet. I'll wear it all. Before I break down all the trades, um Any overarching thought on the Brewers' deadline? and what they did or did not do.
I just think it's funny that. As usual. You know, you're griping here, griping all weekend. They should have given up more to get scuba. And then They gave up too much to get the guys that I got.
And it just proves that just like the numbers dorks are ruining baseball. The fantasy players and video game nerds are ruining. baseball from a fan standpoint like At some point. It needs to be Admitted, acknowledged, learned, lived that at the end of the day, You have one person on one end of the phone. trying to give up as little as possible while getting as much as possible.
And on the other end, you've got someone who's trying to get as much as possible for as little as possible. Like Blaming the Dodgers. Even blaming the brewers, I think, is stupid. At the end of the day, Whoever's running the Tigers sat down and looked at all the offers and said. These are the guys that we like and news flash.
They care less about prospect rankings than you might think. Yeah. The argument that I'm going to use here is, and this is Scoobel aside. Look at the type of pitchers that the brewers. trade for.
They have A specific pitching philosophy. A style that they emphasize, and they find guys that fit that profile because they know it fits into what they teach, preach, and try to do. Every organization has certain aspects in players, in player development, especially, that they prioritize. And the Tigers may prioritize one skill set in a way that the Brewers or the Dodgers or somebody else don't.
So when they're sitting there and they're looking at, all right. You know, Atlanta, Tampa, LA, Milwaukee, give us your best and final offers. When they're looking down those lists, they're not looking to see where this guy is ranked in your prospect rankings. Obviously, you get noticed that way, but They're looking at what the metrics say, what the ancillary stuff says, because that's a better. Projection of what a player is going to be, especially when it's a prospect, than just, well, he's the number five-rated prospect in this particular system.
Well, there was a lot of there was so Saturday night this trade goes down, and then everybody that had a pen or keyboard wanted to blame the brewers. No. I also saw a lot of blame towards the Rays. Like, why aren't you going and getting more? With the Brewers, it's the second trade deadline in a row.
They've had the league's best record, and people are beside themselves that they did not get scuba or at least try to. Push in harder. I've got this little anecdote from the athletic. The Tigers spent minimal time negotiating with the Rays with their sights seemingly set on the Dodgers system. According to league sources, the Brewers, too, have an enviable farm system.
They've never been the type to aggressively act for a rental.
So, Milwaukee, well run and rolling, moves on without adding Scoobel in early August. And I think the sentiment there is. The tiger like the tigers Not to brag, but I just did a hit on channel 12. And what I told him there was not to be lame, but this is like in a fantasy football league. If you get a trade offer in a fantasy league, typically you then go and like text other people in the league: hey, this is what I got cooking.
Do you want to beat it? It didn't seem like the Tigers did that. They didn't need to trade him on Saturday night. There was no rush for this. I just feel like the Tigers never had any interest in trading with the Brewers.
And now the Brewers look like the bad guy for something that they, a party that they weren't even invited to. And I can see part of that. And one thing to keep in mind too, listen. Um People don't want to hear this. But There have been rumblings that Scoobel wanted to end up with the Dodgers.
Well, why wouldn't you? You're going to win a fucking World Series. And plus, the guy's from California, he's from the West Coast.
So There's It absolutely plays into it that the The Tigers, while looking out for their best interests, are also going to try and do right by a guy that. You know, meant a lot to the organization, means a lot to the fans. put up with some stuff like Maybe that was a preferred destination, and they focused in on that and tried to extract maximum value from the Dodgers. And again, One team's definition of maximum value. It is going to be different than the others.
You know, I saw a lot of people say, well, the Brewers could have offered, what was it, 5, 11, and 17? And like, those are the exact same things. Things to keep in mind here, too. The Tigers minor league system is a lot like the Brewers, where it's really infield or heavy. Most of their top prospects are infield guys.
They're prioritizing. you know, young, controllable pitching and outfield help. Brewers don't have a lot of pitching prospects in their top. You know, 10, 15, 20, 30. They also don't have a lot of outfielders in that list.
A lot of them are really far down the line. Um, you know, a lot of their tradable prospects are still in a ball. You know, that's great as a part of a package, but you know teams aren't looking for guys that are still two three years away They wanted a collection of guys that would be ready to go in the next year or two.
Some of them ready to come up now. There's so many different things that go into play at the trade deadline. And one thing I hate, and we've both worked. in the same place and for some of the same people. And there's this concept, especially in sports talk circles, that, well, just because they didn't didn't mean they tried.
And everything is just an excuse. I don't believe that for a second. I believe Matt Army. Murphy's saying, hey, we tried. Murphy's saying we tried, man.
He said that earlier today. And I have no reason to doubt it. Listen, I've talked to those guys. Before and after the deadline. And then you hear people say, well, why don't they just come out and say who they say?
Because that's not what you do. Because you may have to deal with this GM again down the road. You don't go out and sell your compatriots. You don't go out and act like a sore loser because. Chances are you do that, you're never gonna get a deal with those guys again.
Like, this is business. At the end of the day, it's a business. and there are real human beings involved. And there are all sorts of analytics and metrics and evaluations that go into this stuff. And the only people that know the parameters are the people that are involved.

That that fit the need. I will tell you the trades keep in mind. They did make so the trade with the Cardinals was earlier Monday. They get Dustin May. And Jojo Romero.
Romero, I always feel like Doesn't he always like shut us down? I would say every Cardinals pitcher seems to do that. Dustin May is floated around now. This is like his fourth team, I think. Third.
Red Sox, Dodgers. We heard Dodgers and the Red Sox. Is there another one in there?
Someone in between the Red Sox and the Cardinals. Cause when he came up, he was like Just those three, just those three. Oh, just yeah. The Brewers give up, Alexander is it free ass? 18 year old?
Yeah, I think so. Class A and then He is a, what is he, first baseman? I don't know what he is. I don't know who these guys are. But everyone's mad about that one.
Josiah Ragsdale was also traded.
So they gave up two minor league hitters. For two major league pitchers. They also made a trade with Colorado within the last hour. Antonio Sensatella. We've heard of him for a couple of minor league Relievers.
He's been with the Rockies his whole career. I don't know. And has done pretty good. That's what brought my point up before. when I was talking about you know the tigers were looking for outfield help.
You know, both of those guys that got traded to St. Louis. Are, I believe, AVOL guys. Like, they're not anticipated until 2028 at the earliest. You know.
I just could have looked at him and said, not my thing. Brent says it's my favorite show, the BW show. That's how I'm known on Milwaukee Radio these days. I'll see you Thursday, Bart. All right, all right, all right.
Same old Brewers trade deadline. Five guys we got are okay. That includes the trade with Cleveland. Over the weekend. Just looking at, I'll go through some of the other trades that happened.
But the team that I do want to mention. Is I do think the Cubs did all right. I think the Cubs did. They made some moves, Jed Hoyer.
Okay. Hoyer made a move this week. They got Gossman and they got Clay Holmes. Didn't they get Weaver too? Did they get Weaver?
Come on, no. Uh I don't know, I don't know, I don't know. Did they? Braxton Garrett. Ryan Zepperyan.
Where did Luke Weaver go? I saw a bunch of the cubs. Pirates? Oh, he went to the Pirates. Wow.
Did he? All right. Man, the pir that pirates rotation, man, that's legit. Like I've said this a lot in the past: that the Pirates might not win the division. But they could go a long way to determining who does and could very easily keep somebody from winning it.
But there are happened at the deadline. I thought the Brewers would land Mize and Kenley Jansen. Like those were the two guys that I thought. the Brewers are going to go after from the Tigers. I did a show earlier today, and I talked about all the trades up until that point.
I don't think there's any more. Dalton Varsho went to the Astros. He's a Milwaukee guy. I don't know that there's another big name that went. This afternoon.
That like made my eyes pop.
So I think where you're at with the Brewers is They didn't do nothing. I think they did more than a year ago. When they got Lockeridge, Miller, and Montgomery. I also think they tried a little harder than a year ago. Yeah.
But Yeah. To make a transaction. Both parties need to agree. That's exactly it. I don't, but I I don't know.
I've been pitching all weekend and I think. The owners want a lockout, so they want the Dodgers to win a World Series. They don't want the Brewers to win a World Series because then people can be like, see, we don't need a salary cap. I think they want a lockout. They want a salary cap.
Fans want a salary cap.
So eventually we'll get there. But I do think there was a reluctance maybe. To trade with the Brewers if you didn't have to. I think that that was, I don't think it's maybe the driving force on why the Tigers did what they did. But I don't think it was nothing.
Just like the substation in San Francisco, I don't think it's the reason all these guys are getting hurt. But it is a reason, like something's fucking going on there.
So, it's not the whole thing. I will never tire of that story. I will never tire of that story. I think it is absolutely hilarious. The shit that fans will grasp onto.
and try they're getting hurt to make a thing Do you know that capitalists' station outside of Miller Park? Kaepernick actually first took a knee because he was tired from all the electric waves. And then people are like, hey, you're protesting. And he's like, I might as well just go with this. Fuck it, I'm not one.
Yeah, that's actually one. What happened? Can I? You got to know David Stearns while covering the Met or the Brewers. Yes, I did.
Why is he so terrible in this new job? I don't know. You know, that is. And I told you. It's like you give this chef more ingredients and he doesn't know what to fucking do anymore.
He can make the meanest PBJ in town, but you give him a whole fucking rack of deli and he's like, oh, I'm putting fucking rats in my bread. I said I was talking to one of my former colleagues. He covers the Mets, Jerry Beach, out in New York when the Mets were out there. And See, it's crazy because Craig Counsel and David Stearns. were considered geniuses for what they were able to do with nothing in Milwaukee.
And now they've both gone on to bigger and better with significantly more resources. But they're not doing. what they were like council and let's be fair You know, council hasn't exactly The cops haven't exactly stunk. You know, I mean, they're still. Like what, 20 games over 500?
Um yeah. But And I'll start with council. The thing that gets me about the whole council situation is they're sitting there complaining that, well, you know, he hasn't been able to. To win, and Jed Hoyer hasn't given him enough talent.
Well, the whole selling point of Council was he's able to get the most out of the minimal.
So, why do they need more talent? Why do they need bigger names? Why do they need a bigger price ticket? Craig Console is such a good manager. Um, and then Stearns, and it's like.
Wow, like this was boy wonder. And everyone made it seem like. This guy and his brains, combined with Steve Cohen's money, was a World Series waiting to happen. But it's proved the point that I've made on this show, too. And anytime people want to argue me about the Dodgers, hey, you know what?
Just because you spend money doesn't mean you're going to win. I mean, the Mets are right up with the Dodgers, like a $300 million payroll. They have jacked shit to show for it. I mean, they've been god-awful. You know, they had that one run to the NLCS when they knocked the Brewers out.
But They had to High-tailed into the playoffs with a ridiculous run down the stretch. You know, they were. Dog shit last year. It just It's funny too, because And this goes all the way back to 2019. Remember when Derek Peterson?
Left After the Brewers run to the NLCS and became the pitching coach at Cincinnati, and everyone thought, oh my God, well, this is terrible. Oh, yeah, we are all masterminds. And then they promoted Chris Hook, and people were pissed that they didn't go out and get a big-name guy. And then when Stearns left and they just promoted Matt Arnold, and everyone's like, well, you know, Mark should have gone out and gotten a big name GM. And then when they promoted Murph, like, why didn't they go out and sign a guy with experience?
Like it just goes to show that. Whatever the brewers are doing. And I'm not going to say that Arnold and Murphy were the masterminds this whole time. Like, that's the two easiest. Whatever the brewers are doing.
Is a product of the environment and the atmosphere and the system that they've built. and being able to maintain that continuity says a lot about the organization. that you know your two most high profile people Can go on to bigger markets and bigger resources and not even sniff the level of success. that the brewers had that they had with the brewers and the brewers continue to have Brewer start a four-game set against the Pirates. The Winkler versus Tailgates coming up on...

Yeah. I think they did pretty good on the deadline. I mean, they addressed needs, they got pitching depth. Um They got some bullpen help. Um Like what they need is, they need innings eaters to get them to October.
I mean, they're going to make the playoffs. That's barring an epic collapse. They're going to make the playoffs. Um And if Harrison comes back. And as Harrison again.
I mean, that's a pretty solid one-two punch. Yeah, why are we getting trades? We're getting Harrison at the deadline. We're getting Harrison at the deadline. But what I'm saying is.
What they need right now. is to get to October with Harrison and Mizorowski. And Sprout, you know, at the top of their game. And to do that, they're going to need other guys that can eat innings. and save the bullpen.
Um because you're going to use the bullpen a lot more while you're managing Miz and Harrison. down the stretch. They got guys that could eat innings. They got some late inning help. And they also addressed some concerns with their catching depth.
I think, all in all, it wasn't a flashy deadline, but I think they addressed all their needs, with the exception of the aforementioned bath, which I just don't think was out there. Greg says there's a shitty, not that shitty place. In Menominee Falls, that matches your apartment description. I'll check that out. Check that out.
