Good morning, everybody. Welcome into the Winklerverse. It is 12:48 a.m. On June 1st. I started watching a baseball game that started at 10.10.
At night on a Sunday evening. Between the Milwaukee Panthers and the Auburn Tigers. And it does appear as we start the ninth inning right now, it does appear. That the Tigers will win this game and will have to play another game on Monday. The Milwaukee Panthers baseball team is certainly taking over.
The city. By storm. Uh hopefully much more of the state as well. Looks like there's some rain. At Tiger Stadium.
I'm assuming that's what it's called. It's not, but. Let's just go with it. But they're in the ninth inning. Milwaukee's got one out, they're batting in the bottom.
And they're down 8-1.
So what is likely to happen is Milwaukee. They're in the group of 64 right now. This is how the college baseball tournament works. And if they get out of this. UCF and NC State were in their little cluster.
It's down to Milwaukee and Auburn right now. If Milwaukee gets out of this, They will play, I believe it would be Old Miss. And then that would be in the super regional. They're down to 16. And from there, they can get into the College World Series where the eight teams go to.
Omaha. But right now. We are looking at another game. And that would be on Monday at a time to be determined, but you would have to expect. it to be a late one.
Because this was a very interesting day with what happened with Milwaukee, and it's 8-1. They just got a double. The Tigers did, and we'll follow this. But for those of you who are. Maybe hearing about Milwaukee and what's going on.
I didn't know they had a team. Wait, now I hear that they started 5-21. They're under 500. This is a team at the beginning of the season. They tested themselves.
So, yes, they were five and 21. But they went to LSU. And they started on the road at LSU in February. Then they went to Duke. Then they eventually went to Minnesota and they were at Purdue and they had a bunch of Tough road games before they finally made it home.
They played their ball where the milkmen do in Franklin, Franklin Field. Their first home game was the last weekend of March.
So they were Road Warriors, getting some good experience, which did help them come this tournament. As they came into the tournament on a seven-game winning streak, which included. Winning the Horizon League Championship, which is how they got here.
So they were the auto-bid from the Horizon, which is how they got to this point, two out in the top. Of the ninth. They took on Auburn on Friday. On Friday, it was a very interesting game. Uh game started around Game games start around noon.
And the Panthers went up 10-0. In this ballgame, they went up 10-0. It was crazy. Then there was like. There was some chipping back from the Tigers, but then there was a rain delay.
So if you're. If you're on Friday, not really knowing what's happening. And you start to hear. Conversation. About um The Panthers.
You're like, what's happening? You see, they're beating Auburn. All these different accounts were tweeting about it. Not just college baseball accounts or, you know, guys like me, but ESPN and, or as Becky Lynch would say, Sports Illustrated said it. The bleacher report says it.
Becky Lynch's persona right now aside. I don't like that. I don't the bleacher report, the bleacher report. Come on, Becky. Bleacher.
I'm still in a feud with Bleacher Report because they stole a bunch of my blog articles. Um back in like 2006.
So I'm still in a feud, a one-sided, another one-sided feud with them. But then there was a rain delay. And so people started to figure out: like, what's happening here? I was watching the game. I took my phone to pick up my kid at school.
And people are like, What are you watching? I'm like, Milwaukee. And they're like, Oh, the Brewers played at night. Oh, they do. I'm watching watching the Panthers here.
And I do think the Panthers, I think they overshadowed the Brewers a little bit this weekend, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Now I had a busy weekend with soccer and some other stuff and the like, but I didn't see nearly as much brewers as I'm watching of the Panthers. I mean, it is almost one o'clock on Monday morning. And I'm still watching Panthers baseball. I'm a ride or die fan.
Okay. I'm a ride or die fan.
I'm not an alumni. But two of my brothers are? And I could like Throw a football five times and it'll hit the campus. Probably a few more than that. but I can walk to the campus.
Maybe, maybe, should we, should we go on a field trip? Should I walk you? No. All right.
So we're going to go to the bottom of the ninth, and the Panthers are down 8-1.
So they got the win. On Friday, they ended at Auburn. Roared back. You know, that's one of these things in college baseball. You can go up 10-0 and feel good about it after four innings.
The other team is going to come back now tonight being an exception. But they end up winning that game 13-8. Dedication isn't born in the light of day. It's carved in the quiet hours, before the world blinks awake. At Boar's Head, we rise with a mission.

So you've beat Auburn. Huge upset, and we've seen some upsets in this tournament. I think what's interesting, and I think it's, I think. I think some of it has to do with I'm actually following one of these teams. that are underdogs.
But it does seem like I've never. Seen this much attention on this opening weekend. Of college baseball ever, and it's because there's been so much upsets. The top seed UCLA. Went down.
Obviously, in the college World Series, you see, oh, they're at this bar, and everyone's doing. Jell-O shots, and we're trying to see who can win the most. And it's Omaha and it's the wood or the Metal Bats, and it's a great time, and you got to get down here one day. Uh, I saw somebody tweet, like, I miss the days when C.S. Fullerton was always in it.
Yeah, that's right. Where did they go? But This weekend, I have not been involved or paid much attention to this weekend. Ever And it is, it's a great format. It's a double elimination format.
So, what happened is Milwaukee beat Auburn.
So, Auburn has to go play NC State because they lost to UCF, and then the winner or the loser of that game's out. And then Milwaukee beat UCF.
So then UCF plays Auburn. And the loser of that game's out. The loser of these games are out.
Now, that game on Sunday was supposed to start about noon. And it's interesting because it's in Auburn, and I assume it's Eastern time, but it's not. They're in the same time zone as us. Central time.
So Milwaukee's at the plate here, down 8-1. Hopefully, I can be live for a comeback rally. Uh We'll see, okay. They're calling it a winner-take-all game seven. It's not game seven.
Um No, but that's what they call it. Uh so Auburn and UCF Milwaukee's going to be out number one here.
Okay, one out. All right, so Auburn and UCF, they start around noon. But then it got delayed. And then they were going to play at two and they got delayed.
So they ended up playing at about five. And then we're trying to figure out. What time would Milwaukee play? Because the cutoff is 11 p.m.
So if they weren't able to get that first game in. And then we have two outs here. Two outs. These are quick pop flies. A little treacherous there in the outfield.
If they weren't able to get this game in, this game would be tomorrow. They probably play a doubleheader tomorrow. But they got it in. Milwaukee showed up at the field around eight o'clock. They got it in, they got ready.
And They were ready to go.
Now, Auburn had just played a game, so you think maybe the bullpen's taxed. But I think what happened here. is this actually was an advantage for Auburn.
So night one. When Milwaukee played Auburn, that was an advantage for them on Friday because it's at Auburn Stadium. They're the. Super favorite. And Milwaukee's got nothing to lose.
They shouldn't even be in this tournament, some would say. They earn their way in, but you look at the record comparatively to others. And that's going to be the game over to shortstop, and that will do it.
So they are going to play a game. Tomorrow. Um Do we have a challenge at first? Does it matter? Are we going to do it anyway?
We are not.
So eight to one, the final. in the game here tonight.
So the pressure was on Auburn, and they weren't able to live up to it.
Now, I think the game. Saturday was huge. to beat UCF again another big start nine nothing lead that they had before UCF clawed back. The Panthers did get the win in that game again, 13 to 6.
So they come to this game, and it's a very wonky schedule. They're probably expecting to play around five, and then it gets pushed back. And when you're the team that's waiting, That is Worst and where you're the team that's playing. Because your blood's pumping, you're flowing, you get a win, you get momentum, and the other team's waiting around. Milwaukee showing at the stadium: are we going to play?
Are we not going to play? You know, you're still going to do your workouts and all that kind of stuff and get in game shape. And then if you. If you don't need to play, just kind of unplug. But Auburn, they controlled.
The momentum and the pace today. And in this game tonight that just ended here at 12:58 Central Time. The uh the Tigers got the win eight eight to one.
So now One of two paths was going to happen when they play this game on Monday. Either. Either Auburn is just going to ride this momentum. They had a bunch of fans that stayed late. They're going to feel good about it.
They had a bunch of fans, you know, stayed late, and everything's great, and we partied, and all that kind of stuff. They could roll with that. Milwaukee, on the other hand. could be from the position of We're back to where we were on Friday. Because we beat Auburn.
All right, and you could say that's a fluke because Auburn just. Squashed us eight to one. And now Auburn.
Now they're pressured again to finish it out because they were the highest seed in this. They're the fourth overall, you know, seed. This is supposed to be their run here.
Now the pressure goes back to Auburn.
So I think if Milwaukee can get a decent night's sleep. Kind of put this one behind them. This was a crazy day. Really focus and get back to where they were on Friday. I feel good about how Milwaukee can approach that.
Moving forward. In this particular game, they threw everything they had at Auburn right away. They started one of their relievers, the Horizon League reliever of the year. They started him, and sometimes when you start relievers, B It's like high risk, high reward. Either the guy's really gonna shut it down.
Or he's going to labor, kunky. He's going to labor and struggle a little bit. Took him 6 through two pitches to get through inning and a third. Ashida came in through grade four and a third. Um But They walked a bunch of dudes.
So, in this game, Auburn only had five hits. They scored eight runs off of three hits, and then they added a couple more later, but they scored eight runs off of three hits. There were a ton of walks. Uh in this game. At like the most crucial times, too.
Milwaukee walked zero times, none times, I was gonna say, like my kid, and then Auburn had five walks, but. They were all at huge times. In the sixth inning, they scored on a hit by pitch. And then on a wild pitch, and then on a sack fly.
So they scored a bunch of runs in the sixth, Auburn did, without even needing to make any contact really to the ball, or at least not getting a hit.
So, Milwaukee, what's going on with the Panthers? They beat Auburn on Friday. They beat UCF on Saturday. They had Auburn, didn't know if the game was going to happen. It finally did.
They lose. And now there's another game on Monday. I believe the game is going to be. At five o'clock, according to What the scoreboard is showing me. at ESPN.
So they're certainly not going to turn around and play right away. Because there are some teams. Florida State and St. John's is going to play early. They might have to play another game later.
And then there's some other games that we're going to figure out who advances: Kentucky, West Virginia, USC, Texas, AM, Troy, Florida, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma are the other matchups. But Milwaukee, Auburn, it does look like is going to be slated for a five o'clock. First pitch.
So the Panthers, the Panthers. Good weekend. But Either it's going to continue. Or It's going to end. Either way, this Milwaukee Panthers baseball team will be remembered.
For a long time, this has been a great weekend. It's put a lot of eyes. on the program. Uh it may inadvertently force the Wisconsin Badgers to be like, okay. We're the only Big Ten team without a baseball team.
We can't let Milwaukee steal all of our thunder. We got to get something figured out here, especially with new leadership coming in.
So maybe, maybe one of the sliding doors moments of this run is Wisconsin finally pulls the trigger. on a baseball program. Because when we talked to Dylan O'Connell the other day, uh the elf fielder He grew up in Eau Claire and he was at a couple different schools, and he wanted to end his career in Wisconsin. And this is the highest program in Wisconsin, a D1 program, certainly, of the Horizon League. Because Marquette's not got anything.
Badgers don't have anything. This is it. There's, you know, the WEAC conference is great for D3, but this is college baseball at the highest level right now in Milwaukee. I think they're going to want to keep that claim. And we'll see if the Badgers look over the fence and get jealous.
But that again is a conversation for another time. But great to see the support from Milwaukee. I hope it can keep going tomorrow. Should be plenty of people able to tune in tomorrow. I think it's still going to be on ESPN Plus.
I don't know that for sure. We might get a game. On uh On one of the main networks. Maybe SEC Network. We'll see.
I know the game finished on there tonight, but a really good weekend for Milwaukee. And hopefully when we talk about it tomorrow. We can say more things about looking forward. And dream of a Maybe a road trip to Omaha. But for now, a very good weekend.
This is the farthest they've ever been. This is an incredible weekend for the program that they will look to build upon, but they will remember forever. But it is not over yet. They've beat Auburn already. They can do it again.
They'll have the chance to do that. This is where I would say tomorrow. Uh but it it is 104. on Monday morning. June the first.
