The King is Coming, a theme from Zechariah, represents Jesus Christ, who is just, having salvation, humble, peaceful, king of promise, power, purchase, position, and passion. He is the savior who brings peace and redemption, and his coming is a promise of hope beyond this life.

We're actually going to be reading a little bit from John and Matthew just I'm going to throw a lot at you this morning. Our theme this year that God gave me obviously was the king is coming. And Kerwin Baptist Church, I've been saying it every Sunday for about three months now. And I'm reminding you again, the king is... Coming.

And I appreciate the efforts of our people. Music's a little bit different during this season for us, and I get that, but thank you guys for trying to make much of the King of Kings here today. And this passage, this is our theme verse. And it's all been building to today. And literally, I've taken time through the Old Testament, and we've connected the dots, we've done everything we can possibly do as far as building this subject.

of the king is coming and we come to Zechariah Chapter nine.

Now, today and next week is where we transition from Old Testament. to New Testament. This is where we transition from old covenant to New Orleans. It's a new covenant. This is where we begin to transition.

From Law. To grace. Yeah. The king will come. to the king has come.

And we will end up where we our theme is. He's coming back. And I want to remind you of that today. Thank you for your presence here today. We have some things we're going to do at the end of the service.

Zechariah chapter 9, and let's look at verse 9, if you will. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, thy king. cometh unto thee. He is just.

And having salvation, lowly. And let me explain this as Brother Frank was reading. I think y'all know that. It is: I am making no attempt to change the word of God. That is not what we're doing here.

The world has taken a word that was fine and made it bad. And so we have children, we have different ages here, and I just don't want you going home and you're an eight-year-old sitting in the backseat if they're not in our children's ministry. Like, why did preachers say that word?

Okay, we're just trying to avoid confusion. You understand that? Not trying to add or take away from the word of God, but we're just trying to be appropriate today. Notice this. Behold, thy king cometh unto thee.

He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding upon a donkey.

Now it says and donkey, because we added that, it would be a donkey for you grammar students, okay? But the and, it's an and when the next word starts with a vowel. Did y'all know that? I'm giving you a little bit of English today. And upon a colt, the foal.

Of a donkey.

Now, two things I want you to notice before we just dig into this, I'm going to throw a lot at you today. As we made our way all the way here to Zechariah chapter 9. Notice two things. Rejoice. And shout.

Now before I even dig in and give you all that verse 9 means, and then we connect to the New Testament. I want you to notice what he says: rejoice greatly. O daughter of Jerusalem. Do you understand that what we've been sharing for three months on this series is to give you something to rejoice about. And then to go out of this building.

and give you something to shout about. Do you get that? You see, when we preach God's word, we are to rejoice here. But it doesn't stop in this building. We are to go shout it.

From the rooftops. We are here to tell you that, listen, Carl Baptist Church. And whether you're a member of this church or not, and for everybody visiting today, we're so glad that you're here. And I want you to notice we hope you're welcome here. You're loved here.

Whether you feel like it or not, you're loved here. And at the least, let me tell you, God loves you. And God, it is not a mistake that you are here today. But we are here to tell you that the King is coming, that Jesus Christ came, that he died, that he was buried, that he rose again. It's what we call the gospel.

It's what we call the good news. And that is something for you to rejoice about because you have hope. You have hope beyond this life. You have hope beyond the grave. You have hope beyond your mistakes and your sins and your faults and all that's going wrong in your life.

You still have something to rejoice about. We were able to rejoice about it before we ever even came. Zechariah chapter 9, he's not even here yet. All we are told is that he is coming. And we can already rejoice because when the Bible says it's going to happen, it happens.

So you got a lot to rejoice about today as we dig into it. But it's not going to do anybody outside of this building any good. If you don't leave here and shout it. I want you to notice number one in Zechariah chapter 9. I'm just going to give you the Bible, and I'm going to bounce through this a big blessing to me.

Notice, number one, he is just. In verse 9, he is just. O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, thy king cometh unto thee. He is just. Now, this word just, this Hebrew word here, literally means lawful.

Or righteous. You see, there is law. And there is grace. Law, the law shows the justice of God. But grace shows the love of God.

To bring grace instead of the law, the law had to be fulfilled. To be forgiven of sin, listen to me this morning, to be forgiven of sin. God had to be appeased with a pure Perfect sacrifice. For the law to be fulfilled, it had to be fulfilled. In God's way.

For the sacrifice to be pure, it had to fulfill the law. Jesus was righteous and he was lawful. You and I are neither. Jesus fulfilled the law. And became a pure, unblemished sacrifice.

for our sin. He had to be just. He had to be righteous. He had to be perfect. But he also had to love us enough.

to come. And to die. And to take our sin. He is lawful and he is righteous. But he is love.

Because he came. You see, Jesus is the way that you connect, as I've said many times. The holiness and justice of God with the love of God. How can God love sinners that have broken His law, that are not holy in His eyes? The only way you can bring those two together is through Jesus Christ.

He is just. Look at me. I want you to get this. If he wasn't just, we wouldn't have hope this morning. If he wasn't just, he could have died on the cross, but it wouldn't have helped us at all because he wouldn't have been a pure, holy, righteous sacrifice.

He is Just Look at me. Please get this. Have had he not been just. You and I would not sit here today. justified.

If he hadn't been just notice number two, he's the Savior. Notice this. He is just... And having salvation.

Now, listen to me, Jesus didn't go get a bottle of salvation and bring it. Having salvation, what does this mean? It means he is salvation. Everybody got that? That's why he came.

He came to save. He has salvation because he came. Salvation is not something he just brought with him. Salvation is him when he came. Look at Luke chapter 19.

Make sure you understand this. For the Son of Man. Jesus, remember, prophesied, Old Testament, Son of Man, capital S, son means he's God, but man means he's man. Jesus, all God, all man, is come to seek. and to save that which was lost.

He is just. And he is a savior. Notice third, he is humble. I love this. Thy king cometh unto thee, he is just and having salvation.

And oftentimes, people miss this because they connect this word with the following phrase: lowly. Mm-hmm. Riding upon a donkey. Everybody says, well, he's lowly because he rode upon a donkey. No, no, no, no, no.

Lowly is its own thing.

Now, listen to me. Military leaders would ride in on strong horses. Political leaders would ride in on golden chariots. Wealthy people of society would have come in some train of chariot dignities, but he was lowly. He held the highest office, but he was lowly.

He owned the cattle on a thousand hills, but he was lowly. He had a legion of angels at his beck and call, but he was lowly. He was wealthier than all the wealthier. But But he was. Lowly.

He's humble. What's interesting, God is more humble than the people that serve him. Yeah, it's not a reason. Jesus is more humble. Than the people that surfing.

He's humble. More I could say, I'm going to get right to it. Number four. He is peaceful.

Now look at this. He is just. Having salvation. Lowly and riding upon a donkey and upon a colt, the foal of a donkey. Riding in to Jerusalem on a donkey showed that he came.

in peace. He wasn't coming to fight. Look at me, he'd already won that fight. He wasn't coming to fight, he he he had already won. He wasn't coming to be politically correct.

He was already God. There's no position he could go higher than what he already was. He didn't come to rage war on people. He came to defeat Satan. By the way, people never have and never will be the real enemy.

Jesus came in riding on. You know what I've often wondered, and Pat, maybe you've thought about it, I'm sure you have. all the time he spends in the Word of God. I wonder the average day preacher how we would show up in Jerusalem. I mean, we're not the king of kings and lord of lords.

But here is the King of Kings and Lord, and here he arrives. On a donkey. Sign of peace.

Now, peace is not what was going to happen. By the way, the name of Jesus still, it doesn't. Bring peace, it brings chaos, it brings hatred, it brings war with people. But Jesus is peace. Dear friend, I'm going to tell you something.

When you call the name of Jesus and you're faithful to the name of Jesus, you're not always going to have peace in your life. This world is against Jesus. He is Peaceful. Notice number five. He is king.

Thy king cometh Unto thee. I want you to notice first, and we begin now as we transition in the New Testament. We're going to look a little bit at Matthew, a little bit, and John. Obviously, Mark and Luke talk about this same instance, and we could just pick just about from any scripture. But I want you to notice first, remember what Zechariah says.

Thy king cometh. Specifically. Notice number one, I want you to see he's a king of peace.

Now, once you look at Matthew 21, we're going to go all the way to verse 1. Brother Frank read some of this, but notice this: And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem and were come to Bethpage unto the Mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find a donkey tied and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them unto me. And if any man say aught unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them, and straightway he will send them. All this was done that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy king cometh unto thee.

Meek. Sitting on a donkey. He's the king of Peace. You say, what do you mean, preacher?

Well, notice first he came in peace. He came and you know the donkey symbolizes Peace. Those who chose to ride a donkey in was a sign that they were trying to be at peace. But notice he didn't just come in peace number two, he offered peace. I want you to see this in John chapter 14, verse 27.

Listen to what Jesus says: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

So he came in peace, and when he came, he offered peace. And notice, he is peace. The Bible said he's the prince of peace, which means he gave birth. To peace. And dear friend, I want to remind you: you have no peace in your life apart from Jesus Christ.

Drugs can't do it. Alcohol can't do it. Everything this world has to offer can't do it. Bring that peace. You can try a lot of things, and it can be something temporary, but you can't have real peace.

without the Prince of Peace. He's the king of peace. Notice secondly, he's the king of promise. Look at verse 4 in Matthew 21 that we just read.

Now, all this was done, all what was done. Jesus tells two of his disciples: I want you to go over here. He tells them where to go and notice the sovereignty of God. God knew exactly where that donkey would be. God exactly knew who had that donkey.

Now, this is my 13th Palm Sunday sermon.

Now, I can bring up everything about this whole story, and we could be here five hours. I've shared something different about it about every year. But let me tell you something: God knew exactly where that donkey would be. He knew exactly who would have it. He knew exactly what would happen.

He knew exactly what they would find, where they would find it. And this whole story happens. Why?

So that it will be fulfilled, which we just read in Zechariah chapter 9. He's not just the king of peace, but he's the king of promise. He came to fulfill what was promised. The king was coming, and the king came. Listen to me.

The fact that he came the first time is proof and a promise that he's coming back again. He said, how do I know he's going to come back?

Well, he came the first time. What do you think's the hardest? Coming the first time. Hey, the first time he came in a manger. First time he came as a baby.

First time he came in relative obscurity. First time he came, he was crucified. Let me tell you something.

Next time he comes, he's not coming as a baby. He's not coming to be crucified.

Next time he comes, he arrives as king of kings and lord of lords. I think it's a lot easier to come that time than the first time.

So if he's willing to come the first time, there's a promise that he's coming. Back again. He's the king of promise. What's interesting, Matthew 21, verse 9, you can see it if you're open to it. It says, and the multitudes that went before the follow cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of God.

David.

So in Matthew, we find out that it is fulfilled what was prophesied in Zechariah. And you know, all these weeks I've told you that here he is. We know that Abraham is going to be through Abraham's seed. And then we went through Abraham. We went through Isaac.

We went through Jacob. Then we talked about how David and God said he rejected Saul. I'm going to establish your kingdom, David. And not only am I going to establish your kingdom, but I'm going to establish my kingdom through your lineage, through the tribe of Judah. And we come all the way to Matthew 21, and here's Jesus as he rides into town.

And what are they screaming out?

Son of David. David.

He's the king of promise. Every promise he's ever made, he's kept. Every promise that was ever made about him, he's kept. Number three, he's the king of power. What's interesting in John chapter 12, I want you to notice this on the screen, verse 12.

On the next day much people that were come to the feast. when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. took branches of palm trees. I think a year or two ago we gave everybody palm trees on Palm Sunday. Notice this.

They took branches of Palm trees. and went forth to meet him. Do you know that palm branch represents goodness and victory. It was symbolic of freedom. Final victory, that he would soon fulfill victory over death.

The crowd laid palm branches on the road as a symbol of victory, of triumph, of peace, of eternal life. In Jewish tradition, palm trees were, branches and things were used in the Feast of Tabernacles and all these other things. I spent one year and went through all that and how they used these palm trees. Those palms were a sign of victory.

Some of you years ago remember singing that song, Palms of Victory. Because that's what a palm stands for. Have you ever looked at a palm tree? As the branches they come out, they make a V. And that's why they use the palm branches as victory.

And here I am to tell you: he's the king of power. He's not the king of power just because he's strong. He's the king of power. Because he has power over death. He's the king of power because he has power over you.

I want you to look at 1 Corinthians 15, verse 55. O death, where is thy steam? O grave, where is thy? Victory. The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let me tell you something, those palm branches laid down, and some of them might not have even understood.

Some of them did, some of them didn't. But here's what was going to happen. Those branches were a sign that victory was coming. Both the victory that came came through his death. through his burial and his resurrection that we celebrate next week.

That's The victory. over death. He's the king of power. Number four. He's the king of purchase.

What does John chapter 12 say? It says, Well, they took these palm trees. Look at the verse here. And they went forth to meet him and cried, Hosanna.

Now that's an interesting word. When the people shouted Hosanna, They were hailing Christ as king, but you know what that word Hosanna means? It means save us. It means save now. It was a plea for help.

and a declaration. of Jesus' arrival. Save now. How is he going to save now? How is he going to save them?

How did he save you? Look at me. He purchased. our redemption. You see, I can say Hosanna to the king.

You know why? Because he saved me. He purchased, listen, I owed a debt because of my sin that I could not pay. He paid a debt that he didn't owe. And I am now clean and clear before God the Father because He is the King, not just of power.

but of purchase. Matthew 21, 9. And the multitudes that went before, notice this verse. and that followed cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is he. That cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna. Save now. in the highest I want you to notice next he's the king. of position. Look at John chapter 12, verse 13.

It says, They cried, Hosanna, blessed is the. King. Uh Israel. The king of Israel. Can I ask you something?

Does this sound a little bit familiar? Do you remember all the way back, we've gone all the way back in the book of Genesis where we began this whole thing? Was God not king of Israel? Yeah. I know some of you haven't been here for three months, but oh, he was, but they wanted a man king.

They wanted an earthly king. Guess what?

Now Jesus arrives. And here he is the fulfillment. He's the king of position. He's the king. of Israel And not just that, let me tell you his position.

He comes. in the name of the Lord. The king of position. Can I give you this last one?

So much I want to say. We have a busy day today, so I'm going to be respectful of your time. He's a king of passion.

Now, we're going to go to the book of Luke for this one as it talks about this. You see, in the book of Luke, it talks about just like in Matthew, Mark, and John. And here's Jesus, and he sends his disciples, and they get this donkey, they bring it to him, he rides on the donkey, his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And as they're calling him king, you know, really, up until now in his earthly ministry, Jesus wouldn't let them call him that, and it wasn't time. But now they call him king, and he's not correcting them.

And now he literally presents himself as king. And as he rides through, and the Bible says, after all that was done, Jesus looks back. At Jerusalem in verse 41. In Luke chapter 19, look at this verse. And when he was come near, He beheld the city and wept.

Over it. Saying If thou hadst known Even thou, at least in this thy day. The things which belong And to thy peace. But now They are hid. from mine eyes.

Do you understand what's going on here? Everybody's proclaiming blah blah and guess what When it all gets done, Jesus looks back and he sees the city, he sees the people, and he realizes just about almost all of them that are laying down these palm trees right now. aren't going to have anything to do with me in a few days. Do you know what we have going on in America? We have a lot of religious people in America right now.

A lot of people laying down the old palm trees. A lot of rig-amarole going on. Just about everybody that cried king. In a few days cried, Crucify him. Jesus wept.

Knowing that was going to happen. Knowing what they were going to do, and by the way, can I remind you: if you're here this morning and you have been saved by the grace of God, if there's been a time in your life when you realize that it doesn't matter if I can be a good person, it doesn't matter all the good things I do, there has to come a point when you realize I can't save myself, I'm not perfect, I've sinned, and that means you can't save yourself. But Jesus came and He lived a perfect life, a perfect sacrifice, and He died on the cross, He was buried, and He rose again. Listen to me this morning, you need to understand something. In the middle of all that, despite knowing what you would do, Jesus still came for you.

And if you're saved here this morning, it means he saved you despite knowing what you were going to do to him. He's the king of passion. That's why we call it the passion. of the Christ. Because he cares.

So he's just His Savior He's humble. He's peaceful. He's king. And here we go. We're almost done.

But it's the greatest. He's coming. Zechariah, by the way. What's interesting, here we are in Zechariah. and we have this proclamation.

And guess what happens after this proclamation? We got a few hundred years of nothing. We have this encouragement. Thy king coming. unto thee.

He's coming. And then we have a few hundred years of nothing. And guess what?

Some of you, since you've been in church, hopefully. Whatever age you are, whenever you started going to church, and if you went to a church that all preached the Bible, you've heard that Jesus is coming back. and you've been here all these years and he hadn't come yet. And here's Zechariah, behold, thy king cometh. unto thee.

And hundreds of years went by. But guess what? He came. And I'm here to tell you, Kerwin Baptist Church. The king.

is Coming. I love you. I pray for you. While you're sitting here this morning, you say, Preacher. This is great.

Okay. A lot of religious lingo going on here. A lot of symbology, a lot of symbolic things, and I almost made up a word, symbology. You ever heard of that? When you're a pastor, you can do that, by the way.

You just act like you know what you're talking about, and you can make up words. Symbolic things going on. But here's the deal before we close. You're sitting here like. What does that mean to me?

2020. How does this change my life tomorrow? Right.

Well, first let me say this. You have to understand just in Zechariah chapter 9. He's just, which qualifies him. to be your savior.

Okay, what is Zechariah 9? He's just having salvation because he's just. He qualifies now to be your Savior. And if you're here and you do not know for sure that you're saved, in just a second, we're going to give you an opportunity. And it means this, he's just your not.

which means you can't be the Savior, but he is. That changes everything in your life. That's the start of it all. Don't do anything else till you take care of that. Yeah, I agree.

But notice this, he's humble. You see when You get saved. He's been perfect. And you would think if anybody would be prideful, it would be the perfect one. But here's Jesus, the perfect one.

And you get saved, he becomes your savior, and then you find out you're serving a savior. That is more humble than you. That ought to change your life. You say, why is that, preacher? Because when you get a good look at how humble Jesus is, that ought to change how we operate day to day.

Okay, but not only that, he brings peace. You see, you might be sitting here and you say, Well, all this lingo preacher, how does this change my life?

Well, what's going on in your life? What are you dealing with right now in your life? What are you facing in your life? You know, what's going on? And what's coming down the pike, so to speak?

How are your relationships right now? How's your marriage? I could ask you all kinds of things. And it just might be in a lot of these areas that there's not peace and there's struggle and there's confusion. And I have, listen, dear friend, I'm here to tell you, the king came and the king's coming back.

And I'm here to tell you, he can bring peace into your life. You start getting peace from Jesus Christ. We hope you received a blessing from our broadcast.
