It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. We're less than 24 hours away from the NBA trade deadline and the biggest trade that did not happen. For the guy who wanted a trade finally got one. Jimmy Butler is out of Miami. And Jimmy Butler, he is on his way to the Golden State Warriors, not to the Phoenix Suns.
Jimmy Butler has been traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroeder, Kyle Anderson and a protected first round pick. We're going to talk about it in a second. This show gets started every weekday, 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. You can always listen on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. If you've got Sirius XM Channel 375, if you've got a smart speaker, man, go ahead and talk to the speaker.
Ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. It's been a busy Wednesday. Last hour I gave you a top six list of some of the worst trades that we have ever seen in the history of sports. I told you Herschel Walker going from the Cowboys to the Vikings and then the Cowboys flipping that into a dynasty.
I find that to be the worst trade of all time. Luka Doncic may get there. OK, we got plenty of time. Thank you to our guests who came through earlier on in the show. We were joined by a captain, not just in the Navy, but for Navy's football team. Thank you to Jervie Alota for coming through and joining us. He is down in New Orleans.
He's eaten all that good food. I guess I wonder if he's more comfortable on land or at sea. This man is in Navy Athletics Hall of Fame. Shout outs to Captain Jervie Alota for joining us. Check that guy's Instagram out.
G E R V Y Alota, A L O T A. His Instagram's crazy. This guy's on Wheel of Fortune. He's on Fear Factor.
He got a lot of energy. And how about this? I told you we were going to have a guest on.
I'm going to stand by my word. Nancy Armour is going to join us, a columnist for USA Today. We're going to get back to more football in about 20 minutes. When we talk to Nancy, I want to talk about some business of football. But I told you, we got to get into the business of basketball because for more than a month, Jimmy Butler has whined and complained and he won and complained his way out of another team off of another team. This time, the Miami Heat started last year. Jimmy Butler running his mouth about, well, if I was playing for the Miami Heat, if I was active for the Heat, then, yeah, we would have won. Pat Riley doesn't want to hear that noise. He didn't want to hear that noise. Pat Riley basically said, man, if you ain't playing, just shut up. Well, I guess it hurt Jimmy Butler's feelings because Jimmy Butler, the man who is making a forty seven, forty eight million dollars this year, Jimmy Butler, who has a contract option where he can literally just push a button.
Jimmy Butler can make fifty two million dollars next year. He didn't want that. That wasn't enough. He wanted an additional year on top of that. And so he quit.
He stopped playing. Y'all not going to pay me. I'm going to leave. He threatened it. Trade me. I don't want to be here.
I need to find joy. The Miami Heat suspended him three times, not showing up for work, showing up late, refusing to come off of the bench. They said, sit your ass down.
OK, we'll get you the hell up on out of here. We don't want you if you don't want us. Apparently, the only team that wanted Jimmy Butler that he was willing to go to was the Phoenix Suns, knowing that they would take him on and pay him. He said no to a lot of other teams, I guess, because he didn't feel that they were going to pay him. And after the Golden State Warriors tried to get Kevin Durant and Kevin Durant obviously didn't want to go back.
I guess the Golden State Warriors was so damn desperate. New general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. Let's keep this in mind. New GM running the Golden State Warriors were so desperate to maximize Steph Curry's prime that the Golden State Warriors have now traded for one of the most disliked at this point players in the NBA and Jimmy Butler. And not only did they trade for Jimmy Butler, they've come to an agreement on a contract extension. So Jimmy Butler gets what he wants. Forget the 52 million dollars for next year.
He is guaranteed 121 million dollars over the next two years. And so, yeah, in the world of the NBA, being a jackass, being, you know, pouting, even if you're 35 years old, it pays off. Steph Curry is getting ready to turn 37 years old.
I know that sounds crazy. Steph Curry will be 37 years old next month. Jimmy Butler is 35 years old. Draymond Green is still on this team. The Golden State Warriors have said we are just going to go ahead and go for broke. Oh, yeah. By the way, Draymond, he turns 35 in less than a month.
March 4th. This is the Golden State Warriors. How long before they try to flip the basketball corpse of Draymond Green? This reeks and screams desperation. Warriors are not winning a championship this year. How do you add assets to help this aging team?
Picky, this is a poor man's version of what I said a couple of days ago. I said it would be awesome if the Golden State Warriors had Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron. How the hell that would work? I have no idea financially, but I thought that'd be awesome. This is a poor man's version for Jimmy Butler who's already hurt most of the damn time. This might be a disaster for Golden State.
I think you can drop the might be. I think it will be a disaster. I just I don't know where, like you said, the the help around Steph Curry, it's just not there. Now you give up future assets as well. First round pick that's protected. So we'll see what kind of that turns into. But like like it's I respect the Warriors for just OK, you have Steph Curry going to do everything possible as long as he's active and playing well to try to win him a title.
I respect that. This does not feel like it's it, though. I mean, there's really probably no move the Warriors could made at the deadline anyway. They got to basically got to overhaul what, 80 percent of the roster? Realistically, they were truly trying to be title contenders again.
This is a bandit on a bullet hole. Nothing more than that. Yeah. You know, and this this might be one of those cases now where we have a Steph Curry who is he may look at this and go, all right, guys, can I go to Charlotte for one year?
I don't know. But Steph Curry may say I don't want to be here. I just don't feel good. Andrew Wiggins is gone. I guess if we want to find a bright side and it's not like he's materialized into anything and it's not like he's now going to have the process to grow into anything and maybe if he has grown into anything, they wouldn't bring in a Jimmy Butler.
Jonathan Kuminga is still on the team. And so I don't know. Maybe they can wake up and feel that they can flip him. I just. Exciting, right?
I'm being sarcastic. Steph Curry and in two of the most disliked, controversial guys in the NBA and Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler, I know we've done a lot of talking this week past several of past month, really about the Kansas City Chiefs. It certainly is ramped up a lot now that they are in the Super Bowl about how how much they are disliked. I don't like this Warriors team today because of Steph Curry. You got one guy who hasn't met a fight that he doesn't want to get into. And you got another dude who wants to whine and complain his way out of work. Oh, yeah. By the way, this isn't the first time that Jimmy Butler has done this. This is pitiful, man.
What a way. If I'm Steph Curry and there was a report a few days ago, the Warriors, Steph Curry and the Warriors are concerned with how Jimmy Butler's personality fits in the locker room. Talent begets all, even if he's 35 years old. I'd be real interested to see how often Jimmy Butler plays into what level of play he's at. The Shams was on ESPN. He's the one who broke the news because that's what ESPN pays him to do.
This is what he said to ESPN not too long ago. Throughout the last week, the Warriors had really focused their attention on Kevin Durant, but Kevin Durant had indicated in league circles that he had no desire to go to Golden State reunite with the Warriors. So today, in quick order, the Warriors in the Miami Heat.
This is an agreement in principle. They are acquiring Jimmy Butler in a trade. Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroeder, Kyle Anderson and a protected first round pick going to Miami.
So after a almost two month long saga between the Heat and Jimmy Butler, he is now out. He's going to a Western Conference home, a hopeful contender. He's going to join Stephen Curry, Jay Montgomery. They've been looking all year for a star player to join those two in that Warriors rotation and lineup.
They have aspirations for a championship. They want Jimmy Butler playoff Jimmy to be a big part of whatever. His contract now matches, at least in lengthwise, the contract of Steph Curry. Steph Curry is signed through twenty twenty seven.
Jimmy Butler is now also signed through twenty twenty seven. Draymond Green. I want to say last year as he had to deal with his own contract situation, Draymond signed a four year one hundred million dollar contract. Draymond's contract will take him to let's see what year is he going up to?
Twenty twenty seven, where he has a player option. And I can imagine Draymond Green at the age of thirty six. I don't know if he's going to pull a Jimmy Butler to try to get a longer deal. Draymond Green and Steph Curry. Jimmy Butler, these contracts all take them to twenty twenty seven.
Wow. Hickey, this is either going to this is either going to be bad or they're going to be looking to flip. Draymond might be the next guy out.
You know, I don't know. Maybe one of these young teams is like, hey, we need a veteran. We'll give up. If you're Oklahoma City and you don't win a championship this year and you think by bringing in an older Draymond only a year old or still something in the tank, you don't need a whole lot out of him. You know, maybe he could be the piece like that's the Warriors are just I really feel that they they're cooked. I think they're done, man. I'm with you and they're chasing ghosts right now in terms of trying to get Steph another title.
Again, like you said so much work to do and so little time to do it. I'm with you. Like, I think it's tough because you're not going to tear it down.
But essentially, that's probably what's in their best interest. And like I'm with Draymond can get something and OKC with their million picks gives you a first or whatever. Like if you're a Golden State, you got to start thinking about life after Steph because life with Steph right now, I'm with you. They feel like their championship window is shut. Yeah, I'm not I'm not feeling optimistic about this at all. If I'm a Warriors fan, I'm going, well, you know what?
It was a it was a good run because let's think about this. The Golden State Warriors and it is done. I'm sorry. We know the dynasty is done championship a couple of seasons ago.
That's done. That kind of came out of left field, came out of nowhere. Clay Thompson is gone. The Steph Curry. Yeah, he can still light it up, but he's not the player he was who is, but still light it up. Can't carry a team every stinking day. Draymond Green. I mean, just how he plays and now he's getting hurt. This is just if I'm a Warriors fan, I'm going, OK, well, let's see what this garbage looks like for the next couple of years. This is going to be a disaster. Eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven.
That's eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven. Do you think Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors is a good idea? This is the point. Is it going to net them a title over the next two seasons? This is this is really where it lies right now. They're going to be together. Sands, unless one of them gets traded. I don't think something happens tomorrow. They're going to move Draymond tomorrow.
I don't think so. This trio is going to be together the rest of this year. I'm not looking at them to win no damn title. I don't know what they can do next year to add a piece. How they're going to just run out the same roster unless you trade comminga like that's your biggest asset right now is getting rid of Jonathan comminga.
What do you get in return for him? And then you got these guys together in in twenty twenty six to twenty twenty seven. What?
Who's supposed to feel excited about all of this than being a builder? Steph Curry turns thirty seven next month. In twenty twenty six, he will be thirty eight.
At the end of his contract, he will be thirty nine. Now I see what LeBron James is doing. LeBron James is six eight and built like a truck. Steph Curry is strong for his size, although slight and small. What are we supposed to expect out of Steph Curry?
He should have to work less, not hard with everybody aging around him. I feel like this is that movie taken. Liam Neeson is on the phone with the guys who have kidnapped his daughter. He's telling this guy I have skills and you need to be careful. I'm gonna come find you and I'm gonna kill you.
And the terrorist. This guy had a one word answer. He's just like, good luck. He said, he said, good luck. Good luck to the Golden State Warriors.
Instead of having one pain in the ass on the team. You got to. Jimmy Butler traded to the Golden State Warriors. Good luck, Steph Curry. Good luck, Draymond. It's the J.R. Sportbreeze show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. We're going to take a break.
When we come back, go ahead and honor our interview. We're going to have a chat with Nancy Armour from USA today. Talk about the NFL.
Get into the business of the NFL. Talk about social media. There's a lot to discuss with Nancy on the other side of the break. Before we get there, I want to go ahead and tell you that you need to thank O'Reilly Auto Parts for all of your car care needs.
Get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at O'Reilly Auto Parts. Nancy Armour from USA today on the other side. It's the J.R. Sportbreeze show. The Infinity Sports Network. You're listening to the J.R. Sportbreeze. It's the J.R. Sportbreeze show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. We all know we're getting ready for the Super Bowl. We're getting closer and closer. Media day, media week, media row, everything is going on.
But we have to talk about not just the game, but some of the business elements, some of the sponsors and the ads. So joining us right now is someone who's a columnist, an award winning columnist for USA Today. It's Nancy Armour. Nancy, how are you? I'm good.
How are you? Happy Super Bowl week. Happy Super Bowl week. After about two weeks of waiting for the Super Bowl, we're getting a little bit closer and closer before we talk about some of the work and information you have as it relates to some of the commercials and ads that we'll be seeing. What are your ultimate thoughts on this game and the Chiefs going for this three P and the Eagles defense?
Come on, Nancy, tell me. You know, I know that there is fatigue with actually with both of these teams, considering that they've you know, they only they just played each other two years ago. The Chiefs feel it feels like they're there every single year because they pretty much are. But, you know, you can't deny that these are the two best teams. And it's something special to see this three P. I mean, we've never seen this in the Super Bowl era.
I mean, the Green Bay Packers had won the NFL championship the year before they won their first of two Super Bowls. But, you know, this is this is rare and we should appreciate it while we can. And also, too, we should appreciate what the season at Saquon Barkley has had. It is just amazing. And especially, you know, what a turnaround after coming from the Giants.
You know, there's so much history with both Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes. So there are plenty of good storylines to watch. Like I said, I get it that some people are fatigued, but, you know, we're all going to watch because it's what we do.
Well, Nancy, you talk about that fatigue. And with these teams having a rematch, things are relatively quiet. There is no gigantic story. It seems to be that there's business as usual.
I would say the largest theme have been people beating up on the Chiefs about a the fatigue and then also this element of rest. And we've even had Raj Goodell kind of chime in. I don't I don't get it because it's a huge business. They would take the entire business if they just said this is the WWE. What say you, Nancy? I know I wholeheartedly agree with you. You know, are there concerns or are some issues with officiating?
Absolutely. You know, I beat the drum a couple of weeks ago that they need electronic spotting that, you know, the fourth and one call that when Josh Allen didn't get the first down in the AFC Championship was ridiculous. And in twenty twenty five, you cannot tell me that there's not the ability to, you know, have electronic spotting.
But you are completely right. There's no way that the NFL would would, you know, scheme this out would script this out. There's too much money. And also, too, when you have twenty two very, very, very large and strong humans going out, you know, going at one another.
Good luck planning that, you know, you just you can't. The game is too fast. The players are too big. They're too strong.
It's just nonsense. But we are a country that loves conspiracy theories. And so this is a perfect one for us.
USA Today columnist Nancy Armour is joining us here on the J.R. Sport Reef Show. You talk about this conspiracy involving the refs. We do see that there are plenty history shows us plenty of cases of individualized betting and folks doing what they're not supposed to do. What are your thoughts on how a lot of these conspiracies and thoughts just permeate on NFL, Twitter, on social media? These aren't conversations that people are having, you know, with their friends. It's like all online. Well, but I do think there is an element that that people are having them in real time. You know, if you are a Buffalo Bills fan, I guarantee you are talking about the refs last Monday.
And I guarantee you are probably talking about the fact that the fix was in. So but I absolutely social media amplifies it and it gives life to something that might have stayed local. It allows it to explode into a national conversation or a national, you know, wondering if this is going on.
So, yeah, I think these conversations have always been had, but social media allows them to have a further reach and a louder voice. Well, Nancy, when we get down to brass tacks, what do you think is going to happen in the game? We're going to see a three peter. Do you think these Eagles are going to kind of put the Chiefs down? You know, the Chiefs have been living dangerously all season and I keep waiting for it to catch up with them.
They didn't. They do seem to have found their groove in the playoffs. And, you know, I think betting against Patrick Mahomes in any situation is a stupid thing. That being said, you know, this is an Eagles team that has been there before. You know, I think it would have been a much different story if the commanders had won because it would be all new for all of them. Whereas this is this is a very similar Eagles team to the one that was just here a couple of years ago. They have some motivation.
They nothing is going to take them by surprise. And I say one is such an X factor that I I could see the Eagles. I could see the Eagles winning that. And I'm not just saying that because, you know, that you've seen the Chiefs win. Well, listen, Nancy, we spoke with Hall of Famer Champ Bailey and he felt the same way.
So I'm in good company that you're in good company with it. Billy Nancy Armor is here with us from USA today. We know that there's going to be a lot of folks watching the Super Bowl that aren't interested in the X's and O's or who ultimately walks away victorious. They're going to be looking at Kendrick Lamar and the commercials and what have you. I know you being with USA Today, you guys follow the ad. You have an ad meter.
We're in, what, seven to eight million dollars spending just on a 30 second ad. Yeah. Yeah.
It's crazy. But you're right. I mean, this is the Super Bowl is one of the very few events that pretty much all of America gravitates toward. It doesn't matter if you like football or not.
Doesn't matter if you're a Chiefs fan or an Eagles fan. In this case, people are tuning in. It's a communal experience. And the ads are a big part of that. We've been doing ad meter since 1989. And what it does is it allows you to go on our website as of about 20 minutes from now.
Ad meter dot USA today dot com. And you can watch some of the commercials that have already come out. You can rate them. And we have the ratings going on or allowing you to rate until one a.m. after the Super Bowl. So you can give your opinions on which commercials you liked, which ones you didn't like, which ones you thought were the best. And we'll announce the winner on Monday morning. And it's fun because first of all, you get to see some of these commercials even before they come out. But you also can.
I don't know. It kind of gives you more of a stake in the game, like, oh, I really like this commercial. I can't wait to see what everybody else thinks about it. Or, man, I really hated that one.
I want to see if anybody else liked it. That's usually what I'm doing because I've not agreed with the winners the last couple of years, but personal preference. So, yeah. So I highly recommend it.
There are already some really good commercials out there. If you are of a certain age, you will love the ones for Hellman's Manage, which recreates a scene from When Harry Met Sally. And like I said, if you're of a certain age, you know exactly what scene. It sounds like a big oh, it's something like that, huh? The diner scene.
Yes, correct. All right, Nancy, I'm a check that out. I'm still looking for the Budweiser frogs to come back. If there are no Budweiser frogs, I'm a little cautious on that one. I love the frogs. They did bring back the Clydesdales kind of sort of this year. There's a baby Clydesdale.
And then you see the whole team in one shot. So maybe like hopefully they're getting the message that they need to bring back the old favorites. We'll see.
We love the old favorites. Nancy, you gave us who you believe is going to win. We talked about the commercials. I need you to help settle a conversation that we had on the show last night. We understand that the president is going to be on site. We assume that Taylor Swift is going to be on site on planet Earth. Who's the most famous human being between the two of them?
That's a great question. I would say I'm going to say Taylor Swift because you have obviously the world knows Trump. And I apologize to the rest of the world for that. But, you know, there are eight, nine year olds who have no idea who the president is, who don't even know what the president is or does. Every eight and nine year old knows who Taylor Swift is, can probably sing some of her songs and, you know, would probably beg their parents to take them to the eras, probably beg their parents to take them to the eras tour or the eras tour movie.
So I'm going to say Taylor Swift. Good deal. We know the security is going to be real high down in New Orleans at that that Superdome. Nancy, we appreciate the time, all the insight that you've been able to share. Where can we follow you and all your amazing, award winning work with USA Today? You can find me at USA Today dot com backslash sports and just search for my name. I think I've got a page, but I don't know exactly what the URL is for that.
But USA Today dot com backslash sports is the easiest way. Hey, Nancy, enjoy the game. Enjoy the commercials. We appreciate the time again. OK, thanks. You enjoy, too.
No doubt about it. It's the J.R. Sportbreeze show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. You are listening to the J.R. Sportbreeze.
It is the J.R. Sportbreeze show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Man, Jimmy Butler on his way to the Golden State Warriors. Multi-team trade.
And let's be real, nobody cares where Dennis Schrute is going. The Utah Jazz are involved in this trade. The Dennis Schrute is going to the Jazz. The Pistons are involved somehow, some way. But the meat of the trade is Jimmy Butler is on his way to Steph Curry and the Miami Heat get Andrew Wiggins, who should be a good fit in Miami alongside Tolly Hero and Bam Adebayo.
Got Vasquez on the team as well right there. The Miami Heat, I think, are still pretty much in the same place that that they've been that not contending for a championship that much I know. We'll just have to wait and and see that that next superstar who gets unhappy and wants out. And he goes, hey, where do you want to go? And his answer is. Miami.
It's really simple as that. So Jimmy Butler gets that. He gets what he wants. He gets an extension, a two years, one hundred and twenty twenty one million dollars.
And both Hickey and I said the same thing. Golden State Warriors were desperate. They added in a superstar who's a 35 years old.
Everybody's contract is going to end in the same year, twenty twenty seven. And if anybody goes, I would think maybe Draymond is out the door next. Unless Steph Curry says, man, I'm not doing this crap.
You can let me go try to win a championship somewhere else. This has been a wild week in the NBA. Jimmy Butler gets what he wants. Luka Doncic is on his way already. So he's a Laker now.
Anthony Davis is a Dallas Maverick and this is all taking place in the span, not even of a week. And the trade deadline is tomorrow at three p.m. Eastern Time. Who the hell else can be moved? We know Bradley Beale ain't moving anywhere. Not giving up his trade clause. Kevin Durant made it clear he didn't want to go back to Golden State, which pretty much set the table for Jimmy Butler to move to the Warriors after all the reporting that he didn't want to go. Hickey, there's still a small part of me that believes Durant might end up somewhere else.
I don't know. I think it's likely that he stays with the Suns. But I wouldn't be shocked if he goes, man, y'all didn't want me. OK. All right. I want to leave now. So I think we may have one more deal in place for tomorrow.
What do you think? I think we're done. I mean, at least in terms of big ones, I think the Jimmy Butler one was a cap, in part because I think that also just now puts to bed the question of Kevin Durant. Like, I guess, where do you think he would go? I mean, you think about any any team, any young team, it's not difficult to plug him into.
I don't know. Houston Rockets are young. They got assets. But do you want to give up the young guys, the Miami Heat? Are you they now flipping Wiggins out to, you know, Phoenix? If Kevin Durant wants, let me just put it this way, Hickey. I believe if Kevin Durant says, I don't want to be here anymore.
I think they can move him. I think he's an easy player because we know what he does. He just scores and scores and scores and still does it ridiculously efficiently and doesn't need the ball. And you know, despite being an excellent score, Kevin Durant plays within the game. He's not a ball hog. He's not, you know, James Harden in his prime, who just I'm going to take the ball and hold it and dribble around and get buckets. He's he's a all around great, smart basketball player.
Give him ball, shoot ball, pass ball, get ball back, score. If he wants to move, I think he could be moved. If he's upset.
I mean, his feelings have known to been hurt once or twice before for lesser things. I think with him, I mean, maybe was just a Golden State issue. And I don't know if it's just going back there in general. I don't know if he saw the construction of the team and said, even with me there, we're not going anywhere. I think he stays. I would be very surprised if he is moved, but that would definitely bring some juice. I mean, if he gets traded, maybe this is already the case in before, even if he doesn't get traded. Has this been the wildest trade deadline you can remember?
Oh, it has to be. And we haven't even gotten there yet. Everything happened within the week. Katie got traded two years ago, right around this time from the Nets to the Suns. But I don't recall any other big moves being made outside of that.
Like this is the Luca trade. Jimmy Butler. Darren Fox, like some big moves.
Yeah, the guys. So the guys who get traded tomorrow are bums, right? So the Knicks are shopping Jericho Sims.
Is that going to make the show? Mitchell Robinson. Oh, exciting, right? Did you see Mitchell Robinson? He put a video up yesterday.
Today's the day I go to the doctor and I'm like. Is he Hickey, is he 12? Who did someone just give him access to the Internet? Why does he act like this? And then he put an Instagram picture up today of like a cowboy hat, maybe insinuating he's going to Texas, but he still sits there.
So it's at least in New York as we speak. He's an interesting fellow for a guy who doesn't play basketball because he's always hurt. He always has a lot to do and say on social media. He's one of the guys that needs social media taken away. I'm just banning his privileges to us. Who else needs social media taken away at?
Well, last year, I didn't need the Internet. That's right. OK, Jimmy Butler, as of an hour ago, when we found out this trade was going down, I would send him to the Warriors. Jimmy Butler posted a song about the wild, wild west and it's just like, can you spare us?
Is it necessary? Also, was he when he said he would not sign an extension of the wars a few days ago, was that bluffing to get a better deal or is he serious? Then he realized, oh, crap, I have nowhere else to go. It's basically a Golden State or bust.
Yeah, I'll go there. I think it's a combination of both. I mean, you think about deals getting done when people get desperate.
I think this is this is both. So first, we know the Miami Heat wanted to get him the hell up on out there at minimum. They wanted to move him. Jimmy Butler was desperate to get his money. We know that this was all about the money for him. He realized that he was not going to get that money in Phoenix, although they wanted him.
Bradley Beal refused to rescind his no trade and so he was going to stay. And then you think about Golden State. It's like, well, we can't get Jimmy because we're not his number one option. We're not his first preference. And so let's try to get Kevin Durant. Well, Durant doesn't want to come to us. And so Jimmy Butler wants to get paid. The Golden State Warriors are desperate to get a star, whatever the hell Jimmy Butler is to have. And so I think they both swallowed their pride and said.
Deal. You know, we aren't picky. These are like this is two these are two number two options. They both have to settle for each other. That's what it is.
And he somehow got sixty one million dollars a year for the next two years out of it, too, which is crazy. Yeah. How long before he gets hurt or he quits or he's a pain in ass?
Never. Probably more likely to be hurt, because what else is he going to complain about now? And he usually has a shelf life right of like two, two and a half years before he gets frustrated. He was in Miami for like five years. Right. So like, he's not a quick fuse like maybe Kyrie used to be or some others to two and a half years.
I bet you'll be a good soldier. I would agree that it's going to be if he's off the court, it'll be more injury related than thirty seven. Yeah.
At the end of the deal, he'll be he'll be 37. Like in what in one world, man, I just I'd rather sit on it and it feels like a wasted season. I'd rather sit on a season and go into the off season and see what I can do as opposed to, you know, having some type of forced relationship and marriage right now, because this to me feels like two ugly people standing outside. Hickey, you know, I won't use ugly people. This is like, you know, when in school people do the group projects, right? Yeah.
Oh, yeah. And the professors or teachers, it's like y'all figure it out. And it's always there's always a couple of people that end up lingering around. And at some point in time, it's just like, well, here we are together in a group or you meet or you go into a room and everybody knows each other and you don't know people in there. You look around it up. You don't know nobody.
I don't know nobody. Let's talk. This is what it is. Golden State Warriors didn't initially want him, I think, out the gate. All he wanted was the money.
I don't think he wanted them. And here we are. I think the Golden State Warriors are just they're going down the tubes over the next few years. Hickey to Steph Curry. It's the J.R. sport re-show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. It is the end of the show.
You know what that means? It's time for a few things that took place this day in sports history. Back in the days when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore.
But some days I sit and wish I was a kid again. It's time for this day in sports history. You see, back in those days we had radio and you couldn't see anything.
It was primitive and lousy and we liked it. On the J.R. Sport Brief Show.
I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass. It is the J.R. Sport Brief Show here on the Infinity Sports Network. Today is February 5th, 2025.
February 5th, 2009. Pat Summit. Yeah, Tennessee, Vols. They beat the Georgia Bulldogs at 73-43.
And in the process, she became the first coach, man or woman, to win 1,000 games in Division 1. Take a listen courtesy of Fox Sports South. It's a time to reflect on a number of things. The administration saying yes to women's basketball and giving us an opportunity to play on the biggest stage in the women's game. I appreciate that. I appreciate all the former assistants, my whole staff, you know, sports information, all the people that just make my job a whole lot easier. And to all the players that wore the Lady Vol uniform, this night should be a special night for you. It wouldn't happen without all of them. I love it that they're trying to bring a WNBA team to Tennessee and they're trying to name them the Summit, Tennessee Summit.
That would be absolutely awesome. Listen, February 5th, 2012. Super Bowl XLVI. The New York Giants, thank you for doing it again. They beat the Patriots 21-17. Ahmad Bradshaw, he finished them off. One minute left.
Listen to the Final Call, NBC. And Bradshaw had such a big hole and he's trying to fall down at the 1-yard line, but at least he gets into the end zone. And at the end of this sequence, the Patriots are complete. And the New York Giants, given last rights by many in December, are the Super Bowl champs in February.
Yeah, I gotta love it. Every time the Giants beat the Patriots, it was awesome. But we know the Patriots ended up with six Super Bowls, including this one.
We got to go to 2017. You know, this is the comeback against the Falcons. 28-3 anyway. James White, remember he finished the Falcons off in overtime.
Listen to this courtesy of Fox. Oh, whatever. Hickey, I was still living in New York at the time. And I was even celebrating. I was happy.
I was like, Oh my God, this is done. They're going to lose. It's over. Patriots.
Yeah, they're getting asses. Whoop. I was so happy, Hickey. And then we saw what happened. Shame.
I was here working. I was actually cutting highlights of this game for everyone else to use. And I never forget the third quarter. I'm like, all right, I don't think any more Patriots highlights, like at least that's good. And then all of a sudden that's quickly changed.
Oh boy, I better go and get some more as they're scoring points here. That was a chaotic night to say the least. Yeah, that was, uh, what a world. And then, well, you know what, at least they suck now, right? Does that count for something? That's true.
I mean, if Drake doesn't hit, then at least they should go into some misery. Bruh for now, because Mike Rabel eventually is going to be on turn them around. Anyway, those are a few things that took place this day in sports history, as you can imagine.
Yeah. A couple of super bowls. Hey, thank you to Nancy armor for joining us from USA today. Thank you to Navy captain Jervie Alota for joining us earlier in the show as well.
Uh, not just decorated as a, a serviceman, but also decorated as an athlete, uh, helping to lead Navy, uh, to a bowl game, a bowl victory, and then going into their hall of fame. So thank you to them calling up from new Orleans. Thank you to you.
If you've missed a minute of the show, go ahead and hit rewind on the free Odyssey app. Yeah. We talked about Jimmy Butler going to the warriors and I gave you a top six list of some of the worst trades in sports history. We'll be back with you tomorrow. We got Herm Edwards joining us. We have Warren moon. We got a lot to get into. We're getting closer to the super bowl folks, the Jr sport re-show coast to coast, the infinity sports network.
