It is the JR Sportbrief Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Super producer and host Ryan Hickey is coming to you live from New York City.
We'll be hanging out with you for the next two hours. This show gets started every single weekday at 6 p.m Eastern, 3 Pacific. A weekday is Monday through Friday. There ain't no JR Sportbrief Show tomorrow.
Monday through Friday, 6 p.m Eastern, 3 Pacific. You can always listen on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate, Sirius XM Channel 158. And if you got yourself a smart speaker, ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network. Man, we are minutes away from first pitch, the first pitch of the 2024 World Series, the New York Yankees. The Los Angeles Dodgers. They're playing at Dodgers Stadium. Garrett Cole is on the mound for the Yankees. Jack Flaherty, who they acquired in a mid-season trade from the Tigers.
He is on the mound for the Dodgers. We'll keep you up to the game or up to date with the game. You know, as I'm here with you on the air, don't worry about it. We got you covered on the Infinity Sports Network. And we've already talked about so much, not just baseball.
Football, of course, right? Thank you so much to former NFL Super Bowl champ, offensive lineman Max Starks. He played for the Steelers, helped protect Ben Roethlisberger. He came through and chatted it up with us last hour. In another 20 minutes, we're going to talk some more football. Mike Sanford Jr. is going to join us. This man coached in college, played in college, and now he's an analyst. Catch him on radio and TV, all things football, out in Denver, Colorado. Looking forward to that conversation with Mike Sanford Jr. Get a quarterback's perspective, an offensive coordinator's perspective, a coach's perspective on what's going on with this game.
And speaking of games, we got Boise State taking on UNLV tonight. We'll see what Ashton Johnson does out there tonight. Is he going over 150 yards? Is he getting 200 yards? You just never know what this guy, he is a beast. Hickey, how many yards you got him doing tonight? I will say a cool 183. 183 yards. Which you could probably characterize as a quote unquote down game for Gente.
Listen, listen to these, this carries for Gente. Every week, 217 yards versus Georgia Southern, 192 yards versus Oregon, 127 yards versus Portland State, 259 yards and four touchdowns versus Washington State, 186 yards versus Utah State, 217 yards versus Hawaii. And now they're coming off a bye week. So there I say he will be, he'll be rested.
He'll be rested. Hickey, what's the number? What'd you say? 183. 183 yards.
Wow. Very specific. I'll give him 183. I'm going to go, I'm going to take the under on that one. How many touchdowns? Three touchdowns today, 150 yards. I say he doesn't play the whole game. Well, I'd say two. Some of the numbers you wrote off, like he's not played in the second half of some of these games. He could easily eclipse and have even bigger stats than he already does. It's crazy. Yeah. So that's the, that's the tricky part because as of right now, just flat numbers and, and just looking at how his numbers project, he's played six games.
I got six more to go. Boise State does. Gente, he is below Barry Sanders pace when he set the record. But if you take into account him like actually playing every game, then at that stage, he would, he would surpass Barry Sanders.
I don't think he's going to get it. And I still believe that he'll end up with a Heisman over Travis Hunter, because I think people will just respect what he's done as a running back. And I understand everything that Travis Hunter has done is also unique. I just don't think that he's going to get that, that same respect because running backs, they get the hell beat out of them.
You know, especially in the modern age, I don't care if you're in college or if you're on the pros, there's no expectation that, that you as a running back in this past happy world that you're just going to run through everybody. And so, yes, it is ridiculously impressive that Travis Hunter is playing defense. He's playing offense. He's playing every play.
I get tired thinking about it. I said this a couple of weeks ago before he got hurt again. That's going to factor in. And like two days later, of course, he got busted up.
And then last week, he didn't, he only played like what the first half before it was just like, all right, let's shut them down. We got this in the bag against Arizona. That's, that's going to factor in.
And if Gente is going to keep on running, I think he's going to run his way into New York City for a Heisman. You know, we'll talk to Mike about that when he joins us in the next break. If you want to holler at me before then, the number is 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. As Hickey, as they get ready for this World Series, they're just showing every player that played like being a fan of the teams. Like you got Volpe, who was a Yankees fan. You got Garrett Cole, who was a Yankees fan. And I guess it's just real nostalgic to just, you know, bring out old photos and go, hey, this guy used to root for the team.
Isn't this cool? You know what that sounds like to me? What? They've run out of material. Oh, wow. It's a long pregame.
The intros are taken maybe longer. They're like, oh, what else do we got here in the well? Ah, let's just go back to when they were young. Ah, Jack Flyde who grew up in LA.
Let's just put a picture of him with the Dodgers. Do you know who sang the National Anthem? I didn't catch it.
Oh, uh, it was Brad Paisley. Oh, okay. All right. I don't know.
On like an electric guitar, which is okay. All right. That was him. I haven't checked social media yet.
So I guess that's, things will be fine when I get there. Right? It should be. I mean, he's pretty good and a professional. I don't think he butchered it. You don't think he did the wrong words?
You don't think he put the Fergie to it? Oh, I hope not. Oh yeah.
I don't, I don't think so. Thank you. I think you'll be fine.
All right. Well, yeah, they're supposed to have first pitch in a few minutes. So we'll, we'll keep you up to date on the New York Yankees and the Dodgers game one of the World Series out in Los Angeles.
We'll get back to Los Angeles later on in the show. We have some words about Bronny James and what his future is going to look like. It seems that they're following some of the game plan that we've discussed here on the show, something that makes the most sense. And speaking of, of game plan, this is a poor game plan. We have talked a lot of football so far this show. Of course, it's Friday. We got college.
We got, we got the pros going on. This is not a good game plan. This is actually bad. This is actually sad.
This is actually depressing. If you're Bryce Young. Okay. We, we had this conversation with Max Starks last hour, as we talked about some of the young emerging quarterbacks in the game, we got a game between Caleb Williams. Hopefully Jayden Daniels is healthy enough to play with his rib issue.
We'll give you an update on that as well. Bryce Young is going to be starting for the Carolina Panthers this weekend. They take on Denver.
Their defense is crazy. They're probably already going to eat Bryce Young alive. Bryce Young is only getting the start here because Andy Dalton was in a car accident and has a sprained finger. Thank God that's the worst of his injuries, not necessarily for a quarterback, but just as any injury you could have in a car, at least that's how he walked away. And so Bryce Young is, is getting the start already in a bad position.
People are already sick of looking at him, throwing a football around. Deontay Johnson is not going to play. Adam Phelan is not going to play. The two best receivers for the Carolina Panthers are not going to be out there for Bryce Young.
They do have Xavier LeGette. He's going to be out there, but he's still a rookie. And listen, that guy runs through everybody.
That guy's built like a truck, but he ain't no veteran. And so I don't, I don't want to say that they're setting Bryce Young up for failure, but I'll just tell you this pretty straight, pretty flat. Like they're trying to protect their long-term investments and it's not Bryce Young. They want to move Deontay Johnson. And yeah, Adam Phelan, who the hell wants him at 34, maybe he ends up with the team.
You get him for a late round pick. Maybe they probably want to move him too. His hamstring is bothering him.
Adam Phelan, he's 34 years old. Deontay Johnson, his rib is bothering him. His rib has been bothering him, the poor guy.
And this is the funny thing. The new head coach of the Carolina Panthers, the first year head coach, Dave Canales, he was asked, Hey, Deontay Johnson, this rib injury, rib injury that he has, is he not playing so he can be healthy and eventually be traded? Listen to this response from Dave Canales. The conversations that Dan and Brent will handle for me, it's like, I want to do the best thing for Deontay, the best thing for the offense and the continuity of what we're trying to get done.
And the fact that we couldn't get him back on the field this week, I felt confident about the guys being able to step in there and do it. You got, you got to ask my bosses what? Hickey, they hate Brycian. Do they hate his guts? They hate him.
They clearly do. And they seemingly have written him off already. It's like, hey, if we have to pick between the quarterback getting ripped to shreds, or we have to choose between getting rid of the wide receivers and then still suffering at quarterback, it's like, let the quarterback suffer.
Then I know everything that I need to know. Like they're done with this guy. Like if you felt anything and I get it, Deontay Johnson is on an expiring contract, looking for his next deal.
Adam Thielen is 34 years old. They know they're going to stink the rest of this season regardless. They might as well throw Bryce Young to the wolves.
And it is just, it's unfortunate. Am I ready to put the Carolina Panthers in the Cleveland Brown space? Not yet. Am I ready to throw them into the New York Jets space of dysfunction? Not yet.
But the Carolina Panthers with some of these moves by David Tepper and given Matt Ruhl, what was six years, $72 million. He's, he's getting close. His own behaviors is getting, getting close.
All the best of Bryce Young. Hickey, I hope this is not, that might be a massacre against the Broncos. Yeah. I'm worried for, you know, his well-being, Tua's well-being. Those both this week are in big time trouble here because whether it's blocking, like you said, I don't know who the hell he's going to be throwing to reliably now. This is, that Broncos team, man, a lot of sacks, probably a lot of picks this week and not a lot of points to the Panthers.
Yeah. It's going to be ugly. And they just, they just lost 40 to seven, 40 to seven. They just lost to Washington.
I don't, I don't know how things are going to be better. And then speaking of Washington, we talked about this with Max as well, but we got this game between Jaden Daniels and then you have Caleb Williams with the Bears. And we hope that Jaden Daniels plays because he's been dealing with a rib issue. We saw just last weekend, you know, what happened with, with Jaden Daniels, he got popped and got hit in his ribs and left the game. Let me tell you, nobody wants to see Mariota out there.
Nobody wants it. They say that he's questionable. Well, he says earlier today, Jaden is just like, you know, I plan on playing. It's not up to me, but I've been watching this guy. I've been looking at Caleb Williams and I'm not treating this game any different.
I look forward to it. I mean, I respect Caleb and everybody, but I look forward to playing. Trying to play every game is not who I'm playing against. Chicago is a good team, but you know, I'm looking forward to go out there and hopefully if I play, if I don't, it is what it is. We'll be moving forward, but I try every game the same.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you going to play or are you not going to play? Fill us in please, Jaden, please.
I want to play, but not my decision. What's the, what's the injury? Something to my rib. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's something to that area right there.
How has it progressed throughout the season? Uh, I say, I mean, I felt good, uh, been in treatment, all that, trying to get that right. Give myself a chance to go out there and be confident playing, uh, you know, ultimately the trainers and I had them in DQ to make the decision to let me play and stuff like that. You know, they feel confident. It's my rib, something to my ribs. Like it's hard to explain. Oh, there's, there's bone and muscle in there. Like what, what's the, what's so difficult to explain about that? I don't, I don't know.
Everybody got to be so damn secretive. I think he's going to go out there and play. I think they're going to wrap them up, tape them up.
Hickey, they're probably going to shoot them up, hopefully not to the lung. And I think he's going to play. It's a, they, they play in the four, the 4pm, they play in the second slot. So I think he'll play.
I don't know. It feels like to me that I don't think he's going to play. Oh no. I get there's like, there's part of, part of it's like being secretive, right? You don't want the Bears to know what your plan is. You want them to plan it, plan for both quarterbacks and just take as much time away as possible. It just doesn't feel like the risk right now is worth it. Where it is a rib, that's, that's an area that's very susceptible for a quarterback, whether he's running or throwing. It just doesn't feel like a smart risk right now to put him out there so early. By the way, like this is not, like the season's not just about Jayden Daniels. The season's about winning the division at this point, how they started, how the Eagles are, like why risk him hurting that rib injury, whatever may be even more, just because they're playing Caleb Williams, where if you rest him another week, maybe he's better, can protect himself a little bit more.
The injury risk goes down and you can kind of get back to going for the division. Yeah, we know he's a, he's a quarterback who goes out there and utilizes his legs. 372 yards rushing, four touchdowns.
Washington has a record of five and two. Yeah, this season is a whole lot bigger than seeing him take on or oppose Caleb Williams. It's just going to be a shame.
I'll tell you this much. If Jayden Daniels isn't playing, I ain't watching. I am not sitting down watching Marcus Mario to play in a football game.
I'm sorry. I've seen enough of him here in Atlanta. I saw enough of him in Oregon. I've seen my share.
I don't need to see this man ever again. It's the JR sport. And I saw him on the Titans too.
I've seen enough. It's the JR sport reshow here on the infinity sports network. Speaking of quarterbacks, we're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, we're going to have a chat with a former quarterback, a former coach and offensive coordinator and analyst.
He does it all. Mike Sanford Jr is going to come through and join us. You're locked in. It's the JR sport reshow here on the infinity sports network. You're listening to the JR sport brief. It's the JR sport reshow here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network.
Oh, it's a busy Friday. We got the world series. We got some college football tonight. We got college football tomorrow. We got NFL football, man.
It's a busy, busy weekend. We've talked about a lot of it and to dive a little bit deeper into things on the college football side. It's time to have a chat with someone who played quarterback in college. It's time to talk to someone who led a team, a few teams as the head coach, as our offensive coordinator. It's time to talk to someone who makes his bones today as an analyst all over the great state of Colorado and in Denver. Joining us right now is Mike Sanford Jr. Mike, thank you for the time.
Really appreciate it. Hey, thanks for having me on, man. I'm excited. What a weekend of football. It's starting out actually with some Friday night lights in Colorado. I'm calling altitude high school sports game of the week.
So I'm actually getting ready to do that here about an hour. Well, let me tell, well, I appreciate the time. Let's get into this first. So let's talk about the team where you used to throw the rock around. Let's talk about Boise State. I mean, you look at someone like Ashton Jensey and what he's been able to do. We'll see him in action tonight against UNLV. What are your thoughts on what he's been able to do? And for running back, do you think he's going to hold on to that Heisman? Well, right now it looks like there's nothing stopping him. You know, you could say that the young man didn't do it against good competition.
Wrong answer. He did it against Oregon at Oregon, the number one team in the country and single-handedly took Oregon to the very end of that fourth quarter. Boise State had a chance to win that game. And Ashton Jensey had just shy of 200 yards rushing, three touchdowns. He looks unstoppable, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say I was a little nervous for tonight's game.
It just feels like one of those types of games where UNLV is going to have a great plan defensively. Barry Odom has coached against running backs in the SEC in his time at both Missouri and at Arkansas. He's seen some of the best NFL running backs to college level when they were playing in the SEC.
And so I think it's going to be a really unique matchup. I am going to be DVRing it and I will get to it after I call this high school game tonight. And Mike Sanford Jr. is here with us coast to coast, the JR Sport Reshow. You talk about what Jensey did against Oregon and we know that Dylan Gabriel and you think he's in the Heisman space. You can also say the same thing about Cam Ward.
Are those guys, so is anybody else outside of those two that have really impressed you this year at the quarterback position? Shidoor Sanders. Shidoor Sanders is somebody I'm front and center to see. I mean I was the interim head coach at CU before Coach Prime got there.
I actually had a chance to spend a week around Coach Prime before he made the decision to bring in his own people and I got to know Shidoor even in that week. I've been so impressed with what he's able to do. He is, without a question, and I have no doubts about it, he will be the first quarterback drafted and I think if he does continue to have the success where CU's fortunes are because of his arm, his escapeability, and his willingness to take on any challenge in the fourth quarter and find a way to win football games, I think he re-enters the Heisman Trophy conversation.
Travis Hunter's the talk of the town here in Boulder and rightfully so, but coming off of two games in a row where injuries kind of hampered his production, I think Shidoor Sanders could very easily re-emerge in the Heisman conversation. Well, let me ask you this, Mike. We all see the physical talents. We see how the team has developed from last year to this year in regards to certain protections for him. So much gets said about his behavior and how he responds. What are your thoughts? You've been around him. What do you say about that?
Well, I just think this. I think he's extremely confident. He sees it. He sees the field at a level at a level that I don't think many NFL starting quarterbacks do. Certainly does hold on to the football at times, and that's the downside.
That's the knock. But I also think he has to because of the protection that he doesn't always get. And also, this is the team that's had to piecemeal a bunch of transfers together in back-to-back years, so you don't have that synergy of perfection of offensive execution because you have so many different people coming in and out of that program. And yet, he extends the play and makes the types of plays and creates the type of yardage that gives the CU boss the chance to win football games. So I think he is uber-talented, uber-confident, has the kind of legend mode at the end of games, calls it the Brady mode. But I also think that he's going to be in the NFL with a team that fits everything that he brings to the table. And I think a Las Vegas Raiders, or if the two are talking about the situation doesn't get better after this weekend. And I think it's like the Miami Dolphins.
I think that there are some great fits for him and his skill and what he does. Mike Sanford Jr. is joining us here on the JR Sport Pre-Show. And we see the Buffaloes right now. They got that 5-2 record. They're getting ready to take on Cincinnati. We got quite a few games that might be college football playoff eliminators when you think about who's going to get in at that top 12. We got Notre Dame getting ready to take on Navy, LSU, Texas A&M.
Are there any games that really capture your attention for this weekend? Well, I think you named it and that's Notre Dame Navy. It feels like at times, Notre Dame doesn't seem like the kind of team, because of their schedule, because of the loss against Northern Illinois, who's truly proven to be a average to below average Mid-America Conference team, that they got to not only show up, they got to be ready and they got to buckle up, because they got to extremely confident and very high functioning service academies next three or four weeks. The first one against Navy, I think that Notre Dame wins this game. The one for Notre Dame that I'm a little bit more concerned with, I think Army's is the better of those two. They are playing so well right now, but tomorrow that's the one I'm watching. And I think that Notre Dame Navy game, if you watch that game, you'll know within the middle of the second quarter, whether this is going to be a game or not.
And if it goes to deep waters, I do think that Navy can win that football game. Well, Mike, when you think about some of the big dogs who sit at the top, the Georges, the Ohio States, we just saw what happened last week with Texas, what are your thoughts on all the conference realignment and all these new teams that have entered into the SEC world? Well, all these programs, all these, you know, these SEC and Big Ten programs, they all wanted to have a bigger share of the financial, you know, piece of the pie that they've been looking for.
Well, they got it. Well, as a result, you're seeing a lot of cannibalization happening in those conferences. And I think we're just seeing the beginning of it. You know, Alabama might be coming up on their third loss. Georgia already got beat by an Alabama team that's licking their wounds.
Texas gets destroyed by Georgia. And then in the Big Ten side of things, you want it out of Oregon, Ohio State, you got shot with Eugene, pick on the Ducks, you take the L. You're probably, you know, you're one loss away from being out of the college football playoff discussion. There is no perfect college football team this year. There is no, I think, superpower of college football this season. And that's why me as a Boise State alum, somebody who coached there and played there, I actually think that a group of five Cinderella story could make some noise in the 12-team playoffs because I don't think that there are the untouchables because of the transfer portal. The rosters are getting better.
It's created more parity. And that's the thing that I'm going to keep my eye on as we see the cannibalization of the SEC in Big Ten. Well, Mike, as we start to wrap things up, you talk about the school where you went and threw that rock around at Boise State. Is there another school that that's kind of on that line of the top 12 do you think that you think doesn't get the attention that it deserves?
You know, one that's been just a solid model of consistency and made it really get higher. They do have two losses right now, and that's Tulane. Their losses are quality losses. And if they run the table and there's some chaos between, you know, the service academies losing to Notre Dame and, you know, obviously Boise State loses tonight to UNLV, I think UNLV could very easily pick up its second loss. I think that Tulane could re-emerge as a team. I really like Summerall. I think he's a really good coach. He came over from Troy. You see how Troy's dipped a lot as a program since his departure to Tulane. I think that Tulane's a team that's still very much in the picture. Yeah, the green wave is already on a four-game wave of wins.
Let's see what they can win on the rest of the way. Hey, Mike, I appreciate the time, especially as you get ready to call one game and cover everything over the weekend. Where can we keep up with you? Yeah, so look me up.
I'm at Coach Stanford Underscore 2, and that's on the X machine. And, you know, hey, if you're looking for a really entertaining college football game, I'm on the call tomorrow for CSU in New Mexico. Devin Dampier, the quarterback in New Mexico, can spin it and can run.
It's going to be a really interesting game, and it has some implications for the Midwest race. Hey, Mike, you're such a busy guy. Is there any chance that we see you back on the sidelines at any point into the future? I think I like talking about football rather than people talking about me not coaching the game too well. It's not too much fun doing it. Yeah, I want to keep my family in one place.
You know, my family's moved 14 times in 18 years, so you can imagine a place like Colorado somewhere that we want to call home and call it home for a long time. I can certainly understand that. Well, Mike, thank you again for the time. Such a busy guy. We look forward to chatting with you on down the line, okay? No, I'm looking forward to it anytime. Happy to have you on. No doubt about it. That Mike Sanford Jr. joining us, a former quarterback and coach, offensive coordinator.
Now you can catch him all over the place. Altitude Sports Network, TV, radio, he does it all out in Denver. Thank you again to Mike Sanford Jr. for joining us. It's the JR Sport Reshow here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. If you want to give me a holler, it is oh so simple. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. There's a whole lot of other things that we're going to name and talk about on the other side of the break. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. Thank you so much to Mike Sanford Jr. for joining us in the last break to take a look at everything going on in the world of college football. Yeah, I know he's getting ready for Boise State. He said he's going to DVR it and watch it afterwards.
Now that always, it doesn't work for me. Like in three minutes, I know the results. I know what happened. Someone spoiled it. Somebody text me. I can't do it. I can't. I don't even think I have.
I don't think I have access to. Hickey, you have DVR. I know you still got a cable box, right? I have a cable box.
I do not have a DVR. No, sir. You got to pay extra for that, right? Oh, you do.
And that's why I said no, thank you. Yeah, but there used to be a point in time where if you had the box, you didn't get charged for the recording capabilities. Or maybe I'm bugging. I don't know.
Maybe I missed out. I have no idea. And you would think, right?
I mean, it can't be that complicated. If you want, you know, saying that for the bot, like the recording capabilities now with technology, how much, you know, more difficult is it to put it, put it in there? You think people are still using DVR? I don't think so.
I don't think so either. I'm saying if you're a cable company, right? And you want to make yourself as appeasing as possible, wouldn't you want to include recording capabilities at every single box you sell instead of charging extra?
Is it worth it? Because in order to have that, you need, you need, this is getting real technical here. You need hard drive space in the box, right?
Like it's not, it's not an infinite amount. That's a cost. And so if you think about the people that are no longer even putting a cable box in their home, if I'm the cable company, am I going to invest in, you know, producing boxes that have storage in it? It costs me more to do it. And there are less people consuming it. So I would just think I'd, I'd let it die out. You know, you stream what you want. So there's less reason.
Like Hickey, we have advanced so much in technology. That sounds nuts. Like I used to DVR everything. You know, if I missed the game, I wanted to come home and watch it again. I can walk down the street and watch a game before I'm home. You know what I'm saying? Like, why, what am I DVRing it for?
Them days are over. I agree. And like you said, now with technology, it is essentially impossible where if you miss the game to not find out what happened. So even if you wanted to DVR and you know, wherever you are, you can't watch it immediately, but you want to watch the whole thing. It's impossible not to have it spoiled.
And at that point it's like, well, what the hell? You know, am I going to watch a three hour game where I already know my team lost? No. Well, unless you're sick. Hickey, I used to record, I used to record games on VHS and then watch it when I got home.
My dad used to do that for me. Yeah. Like if Notre Dame played late. Then watch it in the morning. Yeah, exactly right. Wake up and watch it. Crazy.
Crazy times you live there. Yeah. Don't need, no, I don't need that anymore. Now, kid, just wake up, go on their phone and watch like a 10 minute highlight video on YouTube. Oh, TikTok.
Or TikTok. I hate, here I go. Here I go. There's a whole song.
Shout out to Gucci Man and J. Cole. There is this whole idea now amongst all the professional leagues, the majority of them, that, you know, if I go through the MLB app Hickey and I'm looking through a preview, they have modeled it after like TikTok and Instagram stories where it's just, I want to read, you know, I don't want to tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. I just want to read. I don't need, I got, I got an attention span that lasts, you know, more than 15 seconds. I just give me the data so I can read it.
I don't need to tap through it. It's just, that's, that's the world we live in. So I just got to get used to it. They, I guess I've not used the app in a while for these game previews. That's how they dress it up? Like you got to, it's like slides?
Yes, everything. The, the NBA app, if you want to go through it, it's like slides. Major League Baseball, if you want to go through it, it's like slides. NFL app, I don't even know. It gets on my nerves. I just watch the games.
I haven't looked, but I'm sure. Why wouldn't it be slides? If you want to see the preview of the game between, I don't know, the Dodgers and the Yankees, it's, you, you, you click it, you tap it and it's just, Hey, the game is tonight at eight, eight Eastern, five Pacific. And these are the guys that start tap to get more. And then you tap again.
And then it's the starting lineup. And then you tap again and it's this and you tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. And if you don't tap, you know what happens?
It moves to the next slide because that's how things are designed now. Yeah, I would agree with you. That just sounds, I don't like that. Yeah. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. But what are you going to do? I'm not, no, that's not building my own major league baseball app. So Hey, what, what can you do?
And you just got to change and get with the times. Hey, thank you again to Mike Sanford, Jr. for, for joining us. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27 between Mike and then Max Starks. We talked about a, just a wide range of, of athletes and football players all over the country, whether it happens to be Max Starks, this Florida Gators or Boise States or Mike Sanford's Boise States, Boise States.
Look at me, Hickey. I hate that field by the way. Have you been out in Boise? I have not, but from TV, I love the field.
Why do you hate the field? It's too bright, man. It's cool. It's different and unique.
No, it is. It is unique. I just, I had the best steak I ever had in my life in Boise. And I saw the grass or the Broncos didn't care for it too much. It's just too, even in person, it didn't suck in. Huh?
Didn't care. Best thing about Boise was the steak that I had. I'm glad to hear that.
Good for Boise. That's good. I'm sure that's good beef out there.
Oh yeah. What are the cows eating? Good old grass, right? Grass fed. I'm sure there's good grass too out there, you know? Yeah. Good grass, good air, you know, in the elevation, less pollution. It's not like the cows are growing up in Los Angeles or something like that.
All the smog. Yeah. Could you imagine beef from Los Angeles? No.
That's why there's another E. coli breakout. Yeah. You grow a third eye eating.
You know that fish, that fish from the Simpsons, that one from the nuclear power pit, the one, he has three eyes, the fish with three eyes. So that's what you would look like if you had some steak from LA? Yeah, I would. From a farm out there? Well, I guess that's the good thing about LA. Not enough space for a farm.
I would. You know, how about this? There was a, not a poll. Bleach report actually took the time to find and identify where the best football players come from all over the country. We typically automatically go, hey, they're here in the South. You think about states like Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, most certainly. But what bleach report did, and they took a look at pro football reference, they took a ranking of the states that produce the most NFL players and not just the most NFL players, like the good ones as well. Hickey, what state do you think was at the top of the list when it came to producing NFL talent? I will say California.
Explain. Southern California, a lot of talent there, a lot of quarterbacks come out of Southern California as well. Big state as well.
So I'm going to kind of, I guess maybe go out on a limb a little bit. There's at least a lot of college football talent that comes out of Southern Cal. So I'm going to assume that translates to NFL talent as well. Is it California? It is.
Let's go. You are correct. Yeah. They are 259 active NFL players from California. They're 30 pro bowlers. Best player currently playing out of California, plays for the New York Jets. His name is Aaron Rogers talking about career and success, active players. And you nailed it. You talk about the QBs, Josh Allen, CJ Stroud, Jared Goff, Rogers, Jordan Love, Jayden Daniels, Derek Carr, Sam Darnold, all out of California.
Don't forget Bryce Young. Oh, come on, bro. The man who's about to get decimated by the other Broncos. Yeah, not so much. He technically fits in as active. Yeah, technically.
He does. He's in the NFL. And what state do you think is behind them? I'm between two. I'll go out on a limb again. I'll go your state right now. Georgia. Oh, wow.
No, no. Is it Texas? It is. It is Texas. And not not too far behind California. So California has 259 active NFL players. Texas has 251. And so it's literally neck and neck between Texas and California. And I told you that California has 30 guys who've been to the Pro Bowl.
Texas has 31. And you think about Texas guys. Hey, more QBs. Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Baker, Mayfield, Kyler Murray, even Andy Dalton. And then you start thinking about some of the guys on defense.
Max Crosby, Miles Garrett, Von Miller. And these are all dudes who've come out of Texas, even Justin Tucker out of Texas. And after that, Florida at number three. And number four, you have Georgia. And number five, you have Ohio. And number six, Louisiana. And number seven, North Carolina. Number eight, Illinois. Tied for eight, Alabama.
And then you get to ten. It's Pennsylvania, Hickey. Those are the states that produce the most and the best football town. Any surprises there, you think? Yeah, Illinois.
Holy. Like you talk about which one doesn't belong. No disrespect. I just I don't I'm not aware, at least of all the talent that comes out of that state. I mean, the rest makes sense.
Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois. Really? Yes.
So you think about. They have 85 active NFL players out of Illinois. Kirk Cousins. Oh, Ron Armstead, Cole Kamet.
The Dory Jackson, J.J. McCarthy, Sam Laporta, Garrett Wilson, a receiver for the Jets. Yeah, those are those are some of the top players out of Illinois. Yeah, I had no idea. My apologies to Illinois State.
I didn't either. I would actually go and say I would think that that Michigan would be there before Illinois. But we know Ohio was certainly a hotbed. So I'm just surprised that Michigan isn't on the list.
I'd figure they get all offensive lineman, defensive lineman out of there. But interesting list put together here by by bleach report, 10 states NFL player hometowns. And yeah, I think when you think about California and Texas is definitely you got the size, it's the size, but then also the weather and the climate. You can go out and play football at any point of the year. I would venture to say if we took a look at Major League Baseball, wouldn't you say California probably takes the lead in producing like Major League Baseball players as well? Absolutely.
I think it'd be very similar top four. Like you have a chance and an opportunity to play out. So is that really the the factor?
Is it really only a matter of just population and whether you think? I think so. I mean, it makes sense, right? You can train outside all year round, like, you know, here in the northeast, like you can't play football outside all year round. You're in a gym and training inside a gym in the facility is not the same as, again, running routes, throwing passes outside all year round. I don't think it's a coincidence.
Like you said, all these for the most part, these states are southern. Good weather all year round. Yeah. I wonder how this would lend to basketball talent. Different. You play basketball inside, right?
You don't need to don't need to play outside, play inside and you put a gym anywhere. And so, I mean, this California still run things when it comes down to it's a population or is it, you know, a city further up in the north? I know this much. Like the best basketball town is not new. Hickey, what's the best thing out of New York?
Nothing? Lacrosse? A lot of lacrosse town. No. Mid-Atlantic, Baltimore, D.C., Virginia, New England.
I promise you, it gives. They take the cake. More so than like Massachusetts or Baltimore. Yes. No, no. You know, we'll reach out to Bleacher Point.
Let's run those numbers. Lacrosse? It's a huge hotbed here. Yeah, but not like the mid-Atlantic, not the mid-Atlantic, the northeast. Yes. But it has to be either Massachusetts or like Virginia, Baltimore has to be.
Has to be. Maryland. We're going to take a look on that. We're going to take a break. When we come back, we're going to get into so much more.
It's the J.R. Sportbree show here on the Infinity Sports Network. We'll talk some NFL, give you an update on the World Series. We've got so much to do. Don't move. It's a Friday.
