The NFL trade deadline has come and gone, with several teams making significant moves. The New York Jets acquired Sauce Gardner, while the Colts traded two first-rounders for him, betting on Daniel Jones' future performance. The Dallas Cowboys made a series of moves, including trading for Quentin Williams, but their strategy remains unclear. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals have decided to stick with Jacoby Brissett as quarterback, potentially signaling the end of Kyler Murray's time with the team.

Okay, we know the NFL trade deadline is. is gone. It came and it went. We got some teams that didn't make any trades today, like the Chiefs and the bills and that we have some teams that did make trades that make you kind of go what Okay. What are the Colts doing?

Trading two first rounders for Saws Gardner. You know what? To talk about all the moves that took place and didn't take place and what the Cowboys are doing. Joining us right now is someone who covers all things NFL for SI. You can catch him on his own show.

The Matt Verduram Show also covers all things Kansas City Chiefs. Welcome back to the show, Matt Verduram. Matt, how are you? Doing well, how are you? Very well.

Thank you for the time, as always. I guess to get to the chase. The Colts, two first-rounders for Sauce Gardner, is that the most surprising thing that you saw today? Yeah. Yes.

I um Well, I'm not surprised it just had a fire sale. It's it's one of the rare times that Jess have had a huge win in November. But I feel like that is what took place. I mean, honestly. It's a weird thing.

Normally you kind of you know, you always do the whole winners and losers thing, right? Who won who? I actually think the winners of the day were the Jets. which normally you'd say it's a team that bought. I actually think it was a team that sold on anybody who you walk away.

And there are other winners, so don't get me wrong, but You know, that was a shocking move. They just extended him softseason. He's 25 years old, but. He has not been the last year and a half, he has not been the player he was the first couple years of his career. Doesn't that say he's not very good?

But he was elite. His working year, his second year. That's not really been true. Lately.

Now look, maybe he goes to Indianapolis, he's surrounded by a better sporting cast, maybe everything goes back to form and he's lost. That is a lot to give up. a lot. I I understand he's he's a He's an all pro level player when he's at his at his peak. He's twenty five.

And there is precedent. The Rams got Ramsey years ago from the Jags and gave up two first. Obviously, he helped them win a Super Bowl. That is an all in move by a Colts team. that record wise it's seven, two, But Does anybody like I don't not to denigrate them, but does anybody really think like they're the front runners to win the Super Bowl even get to it?

Um, I I re I commend them for for Taking a big swing. I just wonder if you if we all look back in a couple of years, if Daniel Jones does regress and you go mad. We'd really like to have those first two rounds or those two first round picks.

Well, Matt, do you think the Colts have screwed this up? Did they shoot themselves in the foot in the short and long term? In the short term, no. I mean, in the short term, look, I think they're going to make a real run at this thing. The division's not good.

The conference is open. I mean, you still have teams like Kansas City and Buffalo, but Kansas City's five and four. And there's a you know, look, they they played a Chiefs in a couple of weeks here. Like they They might very well if they do see Chiefs in the playoffs, they might see him in Indianapolis. They might see Buffalo in Indianapolis.

Now, you know, look. those two teams might still be favored in some places over the culture, even on the road. But no, I I I don't think short term. My concern with it is You're making this trade. with the assumption that Daniel Jones is your guy moving forward and that he is going to play If not at this clip, Very close to it.

Right now, Daniel Jones is leading the NFL on passing. They are seven and two. He's a big reason why. My concern is if he comes down to earth somewhat, not even back to what he was last year, but I. If he's a middle of the road, you know, a thirteenth best quarterback in football.

Then you're sitting there going you'd really like to have those picks.

So it's a it's it's not really a bet on Sauce Gardner. It's a massive bet on Daniel Jones, and that is a very interesting spot to be in if you're Chris Balor. NFL staff writer for SI Now, Matt Verduram, is joining us here on the JR Sport Brief Show. The Jets winners, the Colts making a big bet on Daniel Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. I mean, we got about forty eight hours of uh of Jerry Jones teasing everybody about the moves.

They bring on Quentin Williams from the New York Jets. They bring on Logan Wilson, who is benched for the Cincinnati Bengals. And it just seems like the Dallas Cowboys are just going to be okay. W was it necessary for them to do this today? I have no idea what cowboys are.

of any team in the league. To me, they're the biggest losers, and that's because Quentin Williams isn't a good player. Quentin Williams is a threat to player. But what is the plan? What are they doing?

You know, it's It's like the Saints, right? Like, I look at the Saints trading Rashid Shahid to the Seahawks. And I think Shaheed, but I think the Hallbrooks are jab. But they gave up decent picks. They gave up fourth and fifth round.

It's like, okay, that's not bad value if you're New Orleans. A guy on a rental contract. You also, though, if you're the Saints, just gave up a mid-round pick for Devon Vele, who plays 30% of your offensive snap. Like. Are you trying to look to the future?

Are you trying to be good now? Then, like, also, why didn't you trade Kamaro? Why didn't you trade Carl Grant as before? Why did you trade? You crystal lie.

I it's just I give the Jets cra the Jets is just like, look, we're we're trade guys. No, I think they should have gone even fur I think they should have traded Brief Hall. But At least they went out they they have a stockpile and a half now with picks and cap space. Dallas traded Micah Parsons for the year, and I think everybody collectively thought: okay, not a great trade. You know the direction they're going in.

They got two firsts. They're moving forward with this idea of kind of rebuilding around Doc's second act of his career. But you just gave up a first and a second for Quentin Williams, who is terrific but like probably has like a couple of years left at at his prime. And Now you have all lesser value in the draft.

So it's kinda like you traded Micah Parsons for Quentin Williams. Like and Kenny like it's just it's very It's very Jerry Jones-ish. There's no real through line. It almost feels like just moves for the sake of making folks. No, Matt, we talked about some of the moves that have taken place today.

Are there any moves that are you surprised that didn't take place? I see Trey Hendrickson is obviously going to play out his contract here with the Bengals. The Chiefs didn't make a move. The Bills didn't make a move. What are your thoughts on what did not take place?

I you know, I thought In the AFC, I thought the Bills might make a move. Yeah, they just had the big win against Kansas City. Um And look, there's two ways of viewing that game. Like, on one hand, the Bills should feel awesome. They won the game, and a lot of people didn't think they were going to win that game, even with some injuries.

On the other That 365 is paying out before the final whistle. Check out Bet365's unrivaled early payout offer. When you bet on the team to win and they take a 17-point lead, you get paid no matter the final score. Forget the final whistle and start counting that cash. Hold up.

For limited time only, prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, and for delivery. Kansas City played by their standards, a poor game. I mean, Mahomes completed less than half his passes. The Chiefs.

m you know, defensively I thought in that game were were in that in certain areas, certainly against Cook in the tight end. And Kincaid And the villains play perfectly. Allen had as many incompletions as he had touchdowns in that game. They won by seven. Like if I were the Bills my thought would have been hey this is awesome we watch Just great.

But we've been down this road. We've beaten this team before, and then we know what it looks like in January. And so I was a little surprised after they restructured Taran Johnson's contract yesterday that Brandon Bean maybe. You know, you make a swing there for a receiver. I thought they'd be in the Shaheed market.

And maybe they were, and they just got outpaid fine. I was surprised it didn't add a receiver. I thought that, that would be a move they'd make. Kansas City, look, it was reported out there by Connor Hughes that the Chiefs were trying to get Hall. They offered a fourth, the Jets wanted a third.

You know, do you maybe meet in the middle? Maybe you give them a third and you got your sixth back. I thought the Chiefs could have done that. I don't know that it massively moves the needle for them. Like, They're they're gonna win or lose not so much based on their run game.

I was surprised that some of the other teams not named the Jets didn't trade more guys. You know what? If you're the Dolphins, Why not move a couple of guys off that roster? Why not try to move a m a Mink and Fitzpatrick or a Brad Adelie Chubb. If you're the brown.

You know, they they they move Tryon Shrienka. Why not move some other guys off that roster? You know, I I thought some of these teams that are bad, the saints other than other than Shaheed. Why not move four or five vets off that roster? It's just I was surprised at the bad team sitting there holding on to these guys for reasons that I don't really get.

Well, Matt, we know that the New York Jets they won for what they gave up, But then if there is a team that you look at, what are your thoughts on what Seattle do? We know they have a solid defense up front. Sam Darnold looks okay for now. Asked me in January what he looks like. And now you have another threat on the opposite side of Jackson, Smith and Jig, but what are your thoughts on the Seahawks and Hole?

I loved it. I loved it. I thought Schneider nailed it. Look, they had extra capital coming into this, right? Because they traded Metcalf for a second.

They traded. Geno Smith for a third before the season.

So Seattle had all this room. Uh, you know, Darnold's not making crazy money by quarterbacks and it's three three for a hundred in the NFL today is uh uh you know, a pretty pretty meagre contract for a top flight quarterback. Um They, I think, looked at the team and went, We're really good. And this is a wide open year. I cannot remember a year in the NFL where it's more wide open.

And so. I love what they did. Smith Najigva has almost 1,000 yards a season. He's leading the league. Nobody else on that team has 300.

Well, now you add Shaheed. Shaheed not only has 499 yards with the Saints, who have no quarterback. He's a young guy who I would expect them to try to get under team control moving forward with an extension. And he fits what they do. You know, Smith and the Jigba, not that he can't go deep, but he's really good in that intermediate.

Whereas Shaheed's got deep ball 4-4 speed all day long. Hey man, run a nine-route or let it rip. I think it's a really nice fit. Of all the teams that made additions, I think that was the best move. When you factor in.

Player, fit, need, cost. Matt, we talked about a lot of teams that are trying to compete, think they're competing, maybe trying to do something into the future. We just learned a couple of hours ago that the Arizona Cardinals are going to stick with Jacoby Brissett as quarterback. They're saying Kyle Murray is not all the way healthy. I don't know if they would want him back out there either way, the way that the offense has been moving.

What do you think ultimately happens with Kyler Murray, given the fact that he's under contract, this isn't the guys, or these aren't the guys who selected him? What do you think happens here? I think at the end of the year, the Cardinals have a really obvious decision to make. And I thought it might be going this way anyway, but now it's really going this way. You're either keeping Jonathan Gannon as your coach.

Or you're keeping Kyler Murray. But you're not keeping involved. Because Let's be real, anyone who spent five minutes around the NFL team or in a locker room knows. Quarterback the Alpha. He is the guy.

whether his personality is mild mannered or really up in your face. He's the guy. And everybody looks at that guy. It's like when Tua went up and threw everybody under the bus in that post-game presser a few weeks ago. It's off.

It's over. That guy's never getting that locker on back, ever. He's done. Like I I could probably he's done. And it with Murray You got everybody in that room looking around going, they don't believe in this guy.

So, why the heck why the heck should I? I don't believe them either. Like now. You're in a spot where I think if you're Murray have to go somewhere else. And where that is, who knows?

I mean, that's an off season question. But I think if you're the Cardinals by benching him. You're telling everybody look we're done here I mean, you're you're benching Jacoby Bruschette has played very, very well. But let's be real. Jacoby Brissette is a career backup, he's an older player, this is not a guy.

you know, who's a fourth round pick this year, who just lit the world on fire. And you go, well, we got a plan. That's not what's happening.

So, by benching Kyler Murray, you were telling everybody in that room you have no faith in this guy, that he is not the best option over a 30-something-year-old backup. I think at the end of this year, it's probably time to start shopping, Mr. Murray. Matt, final question for you. We've talked about a lot of teams that made some moves.

It wasn't specifically today, but the Eagles. We know they're the reigning champs. They've made quite a few moves to try to help out their defense with bringing in Phillips, and they're going to get Graham back and We've got cornerbacks now. What are your thoughts on the Philadelphia Eagles? We know how open things are.

We just discussed it. Yeah. I think, um, look, Howie Roseman is is as aggressive as Daycom. And He's got a couple rings on his fingers for a reason. He's an excellent Charlotte Match.

I don't know that any of those moves in a vacuum. are horrifying if you're an opponent. I think Jalen Phelps can be But look, let's be honest. I mean, he's had two massive injuries the last two years. He has not played very much, the Achilles, the ACL.

You know, you just wonder how much he's got in the tank. This year, he's been okay. The explosiveness hasn't quite been there. It's to be expected coming off of those types of injuries. Um Alexander, Dryer Alexander, I don I could care a lot.

He he never plays. Michael Carter II, he's a guy. Who had some really nice years in New York as a slot corner? They're going to expect him to be if he. In a weird way, might be the key there because if he can be good inside for them, that allows them to move the gene outside.

And so now all of a sudden you've upgraded a couple different areas of both middle of the field and perimeter. Um, I don't think any of the moves hurt. They're l you know, they're low risk, but I don't know that they're massive impact movie, you're gonna look back and go, Man, that's that's the thing we gotta mobile hop. They could help. I don't know that they're huge.

We'll see what happens, man. I don't want to say we're well, but now we're a little bit more than halfway through the season. Trade deadline is come and gone. We're going to see what teams sink or swim. I think we have a better idea now.

But as you said, things are very open this season. It doesn't appear to be one dominant team.
