There's a lot of parody in the NFL this season. And one team, well, their fans are looking for a little bit more than parody this year.

They're looking for future happens to be the Chicago Bears. They're currently on a three-game winning streak. Last night, the country saw the Bears go out there and beat Washington 25-24. It took a field goal. It was the same score, ironically, from the week before, before the bye week against Las Vegas.

Are these Cubs, or not the Cubs, there's so much baseball in front of me, are these Bears?

Well, on the upswing, what is Ben Johnson looking like after opening up the season? Owen too. What about Caleb Williams? Is he looking firmly entrenched as the quarterback? Of the future.

Joining us right now to talk about the Bears is someone who covers all things, Chicago Bears. Also, you can catch them on 670 the score in Chicago. It is Hub Arkish. Hub, how are you? I'm doing good.

How are you doing tonight? I'm good. Thank you for the time.

Well, I told you about some of the positive things that have been taking place for these Chicago Bears. First, what are your thoughts on Ben Johnson? You know, kind of moving on from that two-game losing streak to start the season till now. Right here.

Well, he's been impressive so far. You know, he's a young head coach. He's a young head coach as a head coach. He's young, period. And he's just settling into all of this.

And those first two losses were to two of the best teams in the league.

So you can't make too much of that. You got to bounce back. They're now playing teams. That their rosters are more equal with and they're beating them. They're going slowly.

But new head coach overturned various parts of the roster during the offseason. A lot of young talent on this team.

So it was always going to take time. And I think what's been interesting about the NFL this year, through the first six weeks, is that Everybody seems to be figuring themselves out. The teams that we thought were at the top are getting beat. The teams that we thought were at the bottom are starting to win games. It's a very balanced league right now.

Now, there's still going to be four or five, six teams at the end of the day who are clearly a notch above the rest. But we really don't know who those teams are yet. And the Bearers are just trying to win games a week at a time. And what I've seen of them going to practice every day and watching the team is you can see the improvement as they continue to get more comfortable in Ben Johnson's system. And that's really what's happening for them right now.

Or Hub, no one needs to be more comfortable in his system than the quarterback and Caleb Williams. There was a lot made last year after the. Otherworldly performance by Jaden Daniels almost getting his team to the Super Bowl. What have you seen from Caleb Williams as a quarterback from last year to now?

Well, I'm impressed, but quite frankly, I'm not seeing a tremendous difference. I thought he was. Very unfairly evaluated last year as a rookie. You know, yeah, they were five and whatever. You know, but he didn't lose all those games.

You look at his numbers and his performance. He played very well as a rookie quarterback. He just didn't have the talent around him or with coaching changes in midseason and then coordinator changes, just so much going on. But now this year, he's in a very stable situation with a lot of upgrades to the roster and with what appears to be, and again, I don't want to jump on the Ben Johnson bandwagon too soon, but what he's done in the first five weeks is pretty impressive. And at least there's consistency here.

He definitely is doing a better job than Matt Uberfus was doing last year, and that's really helping Taylor Williams. And so, you know, I think Williams is who everybody thought he was when he won the Heisman in 22 and when the Bears drafted him, you know, with the number one overall pick. and still looks to me like a guy who is going to be a franchise quarterback for quite some time. Hub Arkish is here with us from a 670 to score. Also, catch him on Westwood 1.

We know that the Chicago Bears, their hallmark, the expectation from their fans. Is defense, defense, defense. Not necessarily the case as it stands right now. What is your evaluation on the Bears' defense? They've given up a lot of points so far.

Well, they have, but it is also their defense that has pretty much won these three games for them and is still the better group on this team.

Now I think by midseason or the end of the season, the offense may be playing Even as well or better than the defense. But right now, you know, when you think of defense from the Chicago Bears, you think of the 85 Bears. You think of one of the greatest defense, maybe the greatest defense of all time. And that's what they're going to be compared to.

Now, they're not there yet. They're not anywhere near there yet. They're not really, you know, at this point, a top 10 defense in the league. Although, statistically, they were last year. And I suspect, you know, the statistics are all screwed up now because with teams taking buys, you know, you look at those stats and they're not really as meaningful as they can be when all teams have played the same number of games.

But the bottom line. The Bears defense has played pretty well. They've got the talent to play much better. They've had a lot of injuries on defense. They just got a couple guys back.

Last night. And so I think if they get healthy and as they continue to evolve, it's going to be a pretty good group. Um What's interesting about the Bears right now is that they're growing at the same pace on both sides of the football. And we're still waiting to see who this team is by the time we get to week 12, week 14. But we know that the arrow is pointing up right now.

But we know the NFC North is ridiculously competitive. We have Detroit still one of the highest scoring offenses in the entire NFL. Minnesota certainly taking a little bit of a hit in the evaluation of J.J. McCarthy with his injury. Green Bay is some big expectations, especially now that they've helped their defense with Michael Parsons.

Well, I think they fit right in. I mean, you look at, go back to last year. They had both the Lions and the Vikings beat, and they let those games get away with it. And you go back to the two games that started the season. They had the first one one, and they let that one get away.

So they're playing with these teams, you know. You know, there's no question that they say that.

Now, they don't have as much talent yet as the other three teams, or at least not as much developed talent as the other three teams. But to be honest with you, I think the Packers are a little overrated right now. And that's not just a Bears guy talking about the Packers. That's evaluating that roster and where they're at. I'm still, you know, you can't not like Jordan Love, but you still need to see a lot more of him before you go with the franchise quarterback tag, you know.

And you look at the division, as good as some of these teams are. They they really well, not with Jared Goss, but but you look at the Vikings with McCarthy and the injuries, you know, and you look at love still developing. These they they may have four franchise quarterbacks by the time they're through. But right now, we only know that Goff is the one who can play at that level. And so that's what I think is going on in the division.

It's both these teams reaching their peaks and it's these quarterbacks getting to their peaks. And that's going to take a little more time.

So Hub, what would you consider to be a successful season for the Chicago Bears? I mean, is this going to be the best of it, a three game winning streak? And maybe they get a wild card. What's the best case scenario for them, realistically?

Well, you know, it's hard to say because the schedule really isn't that tough except for the NFC North. And they've got two of those games out of the way already. They'll be better when they play those two teams again. They've still got two left against the Packers. But the bottom line is that when you look at the schedule and where they're at right now at 3 and 2, I I said going into the season I expect them to win eight or nine games, and I don't think there's any reason that they won't.

And coming off of five and twelve season, that would be a you know, pretty good next turnaround.

Well, Hub, I know you're on 670, the score in Chicago. I know you contribute to Westwood. What is the fan sentiment about the Chicago Bears as it stands right now? I know for a while it was people who were upset at Ben Johnson. I'm just like, the guy just got here, give him a break.

What is the overall sentiment amongst the team?

Well, for the team? You know, if you try and evaluate the majority of them, I think it's pretty positive right now. Even at 0-2, everybody knew what those first two games were. They were waiting to see. And now that they see the way that the team is coming together and the way they're playing, there is starting to be a fairly positive feel here in Chicago.

And again, when you do a fair evaluation of Caleb Williams and you realize he still has a lot of work to do, you still don't know what you've got there. Have you finally got the guy that Chicago has been waiting for for 45 years? I did their games on the radio for 18 years, then I went and did the Sunday Night Game of the Week for 18 years. I was covering all the big games. The Bears have never had a franchise quarterback in all those years.

And how many have they gone through? And so that's what really still has everybody kind of on hold. You know, they've got to get to the next level. with Williams before you know what to expect. But I think the attitude is definitely positive right now.

I think people are feeling good and feeling better each week, obviously, as you pile up wins.

Now, if they put two or three more in a row, now you're looking at a five, six game win streak, then I think they're going to be going nuts a little bit here in Chicago. Hey, listen, the Bears fans are certainly deserving of some positive football that can make them.

Now go a little crazy, feel optimistic. Hub, we appreciate the time. Where can people follow you, keep up with you, all your work? Listen, all the good things.

Well, you've pretty much said it, you know, on on the radio and and with Pro Football Weekly and and you know our Pro Football Weekly T V show and still doing all the same stuff, just doing a little less of it as I get to be one of those older guys. One of those older guys, come on, what does that mean?

Well, it means, you know, almost 50 years in the business makes me an older guy. Young at heart.

Well, we appreciate the time and your expertise. Thank you so much. We'll catch you soon, okay?
