Oh, yeah, cold as ice Baker Mayfield he had ice in his veins last night. Got a lead, missed some opportunities, came back, lost a lead, ultimately still won the game. You don't think the Browns would love to have Bacon Mayfield back? I know who does love having him. The fans in Tampa Bay since he's arrived.
First in touchdowns. The team is on fire right now, starting the season at two and oh. To talk about these buccaneers and what we've seen, what we can expect the rest of the way. Joining us right now is someone who covers these buccaneers for Fox Sports. His name is Greg Allman.
Greg, how are you, man? Hey doing well, thanks for having me on tonight. Appreciate you joining us. We've seen the Baker Mayfield career arc and story. And we see what has preceded him and what took place with the Browns and what Tampa Bay has now.
Is this not a perfect marriage even in these two years in change? That seems like it. I mean, it's not an easy thing to take a franchise over from Tom Brady. You know, you need somebody with a. Ridiculous amount of confidence, and Baker's never lacked for confidence.
So, yeah, I mean, he's a different player than Brady, a different kind of leader. But he's definitely made this team his own and, you know, kind of become the face of this team and somebody they rally around as you saw last night. When you think about the weapons, it seems like he's emerged into a, like I said, a perfect situation. Mike Evans is one of the most consistent, reliable wide receivers that we've ever seen. Even with Chris Godwin currently down, we've seen Meka Abuka have a tremendous start.
That's his NFL career. How has this offensive system, and even someone like Todd Bowles, who is just easily criticized widely around the league? How has his system been a boon to Baker Mayfield and his skill set? In Cleveland, they didn't even want him to throw the ball, they wanted him to hand it off. Yeah.
Yeah, I mean I think they tried to play to his strings. You know, this is something where I mean he's on his He's done this his whole career, but he's on his third OC in three seasons here.
So, I mean, I think with each one, I think there's been. A growing need to have somebody who understands Baker, who can play to his strengths and build an offense around it. And then, again, obviously, you think about 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns last year. I mean, it's basically the. the best non-Brady quarterback season in Bucks history, you know.
And off to a good start with five touchdowns, no turnovers in the first two games so far.
So I think they've tried to find systems that. Yeah. suit his strengths and and limit his his Big spot. Greg Armin is joining us, covers all things NFL for Fox Sports down in Tampa, Florida. When you think about some of the injuries on this team, I mentioned Chris Godwin.
We know Werves has been busted up. Is there any update on when we might be able to see those guys at full strength on the field? Yeah, I think you know to talk to Werfs. I mean they both returned to practice last week, which is a big step. But again, I mean they're coming off some major surgeries.
So Werfs had talked about the main talk with Wurfs has been week five. You know, which is in Seattle. I think if things went well, you could see him a week earlier. They get the Eagles in week four. Obviously, that's a huge game.
Um You know, they've had success against Silfi in the past. You want to be as close to full strength as you can.
So I feel like that would kind of be the best scenario for worst, probably week four. Godwin's probably a little farther back. All they've really said is the goal is October.
So that could be week five. That could be week eight. You know, he's back in practice. He's certainly starting to push himself, but he's, you know, practicing for the first time in 11 months.
So the physical ramp up. um to where he feels comfortable being out there and able to Chris Godwin on the field could still be a couple weeks away for him. Greg, we know the next game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is going to be against the New York Jets. That could be. a bloodbath.
You mentioned the the Philadelphia Eagles. And we got Detroit. When you think about the schedule and the fact that they they are playing in the NFC South. Is the rest of this season not a? I don't want to say a cakewalk, but is it not a foregone conclusion barring major injuries that they're going to win this division?
Yeah, I mean, they're up two. They're up two games now, basically, because they have a tiebreaker with Atlanta two weeks into the season. I don't think Carolina or New Orleans have shown much to put fear in them. Um, you know, Atlanta came out and played really well in week two, so I mean, they're In theory, all Lena has to do is, you know. Beat the Bucks in Tampa when they face them and they're halfway to getting back on top.
I don't think it's a foregone conclusion, but I think they're the team to beat. I wish to say I was the case going into the season. For them to pull out a close win to Atlanta in week one solidifies that.
So yeah, this is a team that, you know, that their success is going to be. Really determined in January, you know, in terms of what they can do beyond a division title. Can they win multiple playoff games? Can they make a deep playoff push? That's something they really haven't been able to do since the Super Bowl, since 2020.
So that's where their goals start.
So when you think about getting us between September here and January, what is the biggest challenge for these Buccaneers? You know, I mean, I think seeding in the NFC is going to be big. You know, a year ago, they beat Detroit, they beat Philadelphia, they beat the best teams in the NFC. They're going to get both of them again. Here in the next, I don't know what it is, next couple weeks.
It's going to happen quick.

Do to help yourself in playoff seeding? Can you be the top seed in the NFC? Can you be the number two seed where you get a second playoff game at home? That's a big advantage. You know, they lost their playoff opener at home against Washington last year.
So that's the kind of thing you should focus on: taking care of business in the division. Helping yourself in terms of trying to get a better seed. They won the Super Bowl as a five seed.
So obviously, they've shown you can do it when you don't have that advantage. But I think everything you can do to make the path easier in the postseason is a smart thing to focus on right now. Greg Allman is joining us on the J.R. Sport Brief Show Coast to Coast, covers the NFL for Fox Sports down in Tampa, Florida. What do you think is the most likely outcome with this team?
Because people look at the Bucks and they go, Oh, they're good. Their offense is electric. Their defense is okay. But they people don't look at them in that upper echelon. Obviously they're not with the Eagles.
What do you think is the most likeliest outcome for this team this season? Yeah, I mean, I think the biggest question is just whether we'll see them fully healthy. You know, whether Get Wurfs back. Their right tackle, Luke Gedeke, is out for a bit now. They just lost Kalija Cancia, starting D Lineman for the season.
So if they get Godwin back and Jalen McMillan back and Wurfs back, uh. Their ceiling's pretty high. I mean, if they're winning these games without those people, so it's just going to be a matter of when they run into Green Bay in the playoffs, when they run into Detroit or Philadelphia in the playoffs. Can they pull it out? Can they win a close game?
Like they have the last two weeks. I don't think they're going to be routing anybody in the playoffs, but I think there'll be a team that should be confident going into those kind of games. Um, you know, I think Philadelphia will be the prohibitive favorite in the NFC until somebody beats them. But I think the Bucs have put themselves in the conversation with Green Bay. Uh in that next tier um of of the best challengers to the to the Eagles on the NFC side of things.
Oh, Greg, we we never hear about Todd Bowles from a national perspective, certainly. It's just, he just exists. You know, when things are not good, people then point at him. When things are good, he doesn't exist. Why is that the case?
I feel like it's unique to Todd and his standing amongst NFL head coaches. Why do you think that is? No, I mean, I think he, you know, I don't think he has as outward a personality as Bruce Arians had. I think he's kind of low-key on the sidelines. And I think sometimes that.
People want to see more emotion from their head coach. I think Todd has emotion in the locker room or when he needs to behind closed doors. He's just not a guy that's going to get up in players' faces during a game. But in terms of production, in terms of results, They've won the division every time he's been head coach. They've won more games each year that he's been head coach.
So I think there's been progress. I think he's shown a great ability to find Unproven offensive coaches and not only have success with them but set them up to be head coaches. I mean, you see. Dave Ken Allison, Carolina. You see Liam Cohen in Jacksonville now.
Um And it looks like Josh Brizard. I mean, the guy that they picked to promote and be the guy in this year's USC seems like a good pick as well.
So I think he's helped himself. I think, you know, I think there was a. I thought early on that the success they had was taking over Bruce Arian's teams, having Tom Brady as your quarterback. But they've been saddled with a lot of financial cap hardships. in the last three years that they're just getting out of.
And I think they've been able to weather that. while sustaining a great amount of success that a lot of people didn't expect from him.
Well, you talk about the success coming off of Tom Brady, who kind of parachuted in, won a championship. How much what is the fan sentiment? Is there a little bit more patience with this group and given what has taken place since? I mean, you're coming off of Tom Brady, even though he wasn't there for a long time. Are the fans kind of like okay with what's going on and happy about it?
Yeah, I mean, if anything, they've set the bar. They've cut and got it spoiled. I mean, this is a team that had gone whatever, 12 years in a row without a postseason birth before 2020. And now they've been in the playoffs five years in a row. They've won the division four years in a row.
This is a franchise that had never won back-to-back division titles in 45 years before that.
So. I I do think he's kind of reset the bar in terms of what fan expectations are. You know, you think about last year when they're at eight or nine wins with a couple weeks left, there's people that are wanting Todd Bowles' job. You know, and again, there's a lot of years where they would have really done a lot of things to get to nine wins as a Bucs team.
So I do think they've set the bar higher. I think that's probably the best thing Brady's done here in Tampa is set the standard where people expect a playoff team, expect success in January. A franchise that really hadn't had a huge amount of success. Obviously, they won a Super Bowl before he was here, but not the kind of sustained success they've enjoyed the last five years now. Yeah, I think they're going to be on their way to more as we go through the course of the season.
