Yes, you are. Welcome in, everybody. This is David Shefford in for the great. J.R. Sforbrief on the Infinity Sports Network.
Great to be with you, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time. It is nice to come into the studio and see life out there during daylight. What a concept!
Always a pleasure to be alongside Ryan Bocher and a pleasure to be alongside you, however and wherever you may be listening from. You could be in your car, you could be in your truck, you could be listening for free on the Odyssey app, you could be checking us out on SiriusXM Channel 375, you can be getting us on a smart speaker device or potentially your local affiliate, however you choose to consume our network. It is always a pleasure to be with you. And so, We're certainly going to talk about Texas being ranked number one in the first AP top 25 poll. It's the Arch Manning effect, folks.
We will get into the Milwaukee Brewers. They cannot lose. 33 and 9 in their last 42 games. And the team that is in the bottom one-third of MLB payroll. has a better record than every other team in Major League Baseball by five games or more.
Pretty damn special. For the Milwaukee Brewers. And I know there's a lot of people thinking Angels on the Outfield 2 and Bob Euchre has something to do with this particular play of the Milwaukee Brewers. And to quote, a lot of comedians out there.
Something is in fact brewing. We will certainly discuss the biggest takeaways from preseason of the NFL. We will get into the Colts' future with Anthony Richardson. We will certainly discuss what young quarterbacks, hi Anthony Richardson being one of them, has the most to prove coming into the 2025 NFL season. Shohei Otani, homers for the Dodgers, not enough against the Blue Jays in their series finale.
So, so much to get into on the busy program. And We got to start, of course, with Shadur Sanders. I know a lot of people. have been relatively critical of him. for quite some time And there is a jealousy factor.
There isn't envy when when it comes to Shador. the Cleveland Browns by default Started Shador Sanders in their free season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, and all he did. will substantiate the notion that he should have been a first round pick.
Something that we suspected, yours truly included. For quite some time, especially. On that play fake, where he completely sold it and threw as accurate a ball as you can into traffic into the hands of his new favorite target Caden Davis and he didn't do it just once. He did it twice and all before half time. Shadora was like Ryan Botcher out there.
He was poised. He was confident. He was experienced. both touchdown passes. Looked like he had been making those NFL throws for years.
Now, we might as well play you the highlights of one of them. This was the second touchdown pass that he threw to, again, his new favorite target, Caden Davis. Take a listen, and this is courtesy of Andrew Ciliano, Browns Radio Network. Shador under pressure. Shador gutting.
End zone, sliding, catch. That's a touchdown. Put him up. It's another one for Caden Davis. And the Browns take the lead.
Shador Sanders has his second touchdown throw of the first half. Get used to that Browns fans. Get used to that Shador Sanders haters. I know a preseason opener is not exactly the best parameter to measure. A rookie is future success.
But to finish with over 100 yards in the air, to go 11 of 18 from the field in terms of pass completions, to finish with zero turnovers is as impressive a performance as you will see. From a rookie in a preseason game. And on the opposite sideline, keep in mind: you had a former number one overall pick in Bryce Young. You had a former top 10 quarterback overall in the Red Rocket, aka Annie Dalton. Shador Sanders outplayed both of them.
I know haters are going to hate. I know detractors are going to detract. But Friday night, No matter how you slice it. was a huge win. for Shador Sanders, and it reinforces The notion that him drafting in the fifth round is flat out laughable.
The way he looked over the weekend, it reminds you. Of why there was a legitimate debate and argument to be had when it came to who was going to be the number one overall pick between Shador and Cam Ward. We know who the eventual number one overall pick was. We just didn't anticipate on the worst day Shador Sanders falling to pick. 144.
And to Shador's credit, even though he was drafted. immensely low. He never lost courage. His swag, his bravado. His charisma It was never altered.
It was never shaken. And we saw that play out on Friday. in the reps that he took with the Browns and considering out of all the quarterbacks that had suited up for the Browns in training camp, whether it be the forty-year-old statue known as Joe Flacco, whether it be Kenny Pickett, whether it be Dylan Gabriel, Shador got the fewest reps. You wouldn't have been able to tell that on Friday. And so Shador got the start.
Because he happened to be the last man standing, something tells me his next start. That will not be the case. Shador caught up with the NFL network after preseason game number one. And you can tell While he's somewhat pleased, he knows there's more to be had. We definitely had a win today.
We definitely had a win. I'm thankful for the opportunity. I'm excited for it. I don't feel like I took full advantage of the opportunity, but. You know, it's something to work on, something to learn from.
Hey, let's be real about this for a second. Shador Sanders I mean, Nike was coming out with an ad campaign. About when you don't get an opportunity, make a new one. That's how promising this performance was. And here is Shador.
being self-critical. You know, he continues to say And do all the right things as of late. Remember, it was his famous father, Deion Sanders, that wanted to come to Brown's training camp, and it was Shador. That was putting up a boundary and saying, no, pops, like, this isn't the right time to come to training camp. I'm not where I need to be.
You're one of the more famous football personalities to ever exist. You're one of the greatest defensive players this sport has ever seen. You can't be coming around right now. And that's not a knock. or a slight Against his famous father, who again not just coached him in college, but coached him in high school as well, and arguably a top five defensive player that the sport has ever seen.
But Shador early on. doesn't want to. Be distracted. He doesn't want outside noise getting in the way of of his progress and maturation. as a rookie.
And to not allow outside forces to penetrate, that does speak to His maturity that wasn't appreciated coming into the NFL draft, and it speaks to his level of professionalism and how he has grown into a A laser focused quarterback. Because when you get embarrassed, and you plunt it to the fifth round. And then you choose and elect to spend the next day visiting public high schools in the city of Cleveland, if that doesn't illuminate and highlight his maturity, I don't know what will. and he had every right to complain and bemoan where he was picked. Instead, He took the high road.
And I don't know how many people are aware of this. But Chador Sanders happened to win the Johnny United's Golden Arm Award, and that is the most prestigious quarterback award there is in college football. It is given. to the most spectacular, most accomplished upperclassman quarterback. Cam Ward was very much eligible for it.
And we saw who ultimately prevailed. It wasn't the number one overall pick, it was Shador Sanders. And you look at recent previous winners: Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Kenny Pickett. Jaden Daniels. Those are four of the last five winners prior to Shador Sanders, and what do all those four have in common?
They were top twenty picks. Of the NFL draft, it is and Shador somehow with the same award, same distinction, same accomplished career.
somehow false to 144th overall and has to wait until day three. to get selected. It doesn't make any sense. To me. The only thing that I can surmise and theorize and assess Is that clearly?
There was an NFL ploy. that believe the noise and the Sanders machine was bigger than Turns out The game is just as big. As his last name, that was evident and clear on Friday. And the truth of the matter is. All that was was just hearsay.
and a distraction. And GM's getting another quarterback pick wrong. It's not the first time. It won't be the last time. What are the famous examples that we always refer to?
Tom Brady was picked one ninety nine, six round, turns out to win more Super Bowls than any other professional NFL team. in franchise history. Brock Purdy is the 262nd overall pick. Turns out to be a perennial Pro Bowl, and if his coach, Kyle Shanahan, had actually remembered overtime rules, they are likely a Super Bowl champion a couple years back.
So for me, The fact that Sanders did slide on draft day to round number five What he is continuing to show you, and it was very much evident on Friday. is that it was the NFL that got it wrong, not Shador Sanders and Browns fans have a awful lot to look forward to and be excited about. Because you truly do have a quarterback of the future, and I believe the steal of the twenty twenty five NFL draft. Number to get a board, eight eight eight seven ten four ISN. That is eight eight eight seven one zero four four seven six.
How impressed were you with Shador Sanders in his first NFL preseason game over the weekend? And does this make you re-evaluate? How far he fell in the draft a couple of months back. I know this much. He made the NFL look like a bunch of damn fools.
When we get back, There was another rookie quarterback over the weekend that was mighty impressive. Who that is?
Well He plays for the New York Giants, and it couldn't be better news for For Russell Wilson detractors. We will get to that on the other side. We will get to your Shador Sanders calls as well. This is David Shepard in for the great JR Sport Brief right here on the Infinity Sports Network. Again, number to get aboard is 888-710-4ISN.
That is 888-710-4476. And you can always follow me at Shep on Air, whether it be Twitter, whether it be Instagram, if you cannot get through the busy phone lines. Again, How impressed were you with Shador Sanders in his week one performance of the preseason? And when we get back, we will highlight another rookie. That had a very impressive preseason debut.
Good Shepherd, in for the JR Sport Reef. We're coming right back. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. Here's David Shepard. Welcome in, everybody.
This indeed is the JR For Free, Chef in for JR. Great to be filling in for a good friend of mine, someone who I believe is also a living legend in this business. Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. We will get to your Shador Sanders calls. Certainly teased Jackson Dart.
We will hit on that as well. Before we do anything else, Botcher. Um This is an unbelievable cut sheet. that you put together. This is one of the most thorough cut sheets that I have ever seen.
I asked for twelve sounds. and you have forty five.
Well, you gave you a I would say broad topic idea. And I kind of. went overboard. This is unbelievable. Are you like this with everything?
Uh no, I'm very lazy in a lot of parts of my life. But this, this, I went, I went. When it's when it's like cuts and stuff, I go pretty in-depth. Um I would say.
Now speaking of in-depth. Was my praise of Shador Sanders a little too in-depth or accurate? What do you stand on his performance even though it's a preseason game? I would say it was a good first step because. Granted, the Panthers were playing their starters.
Yep. Right. It didn't seem like they were because they don't have a quality quarterback starter. Who are we kidding? That's true.
They also had the worst defense in the NFL history, maybe last year. The run defense was horrible.
So I would say for his first game, you could tell he was nervous to start because he had a couple overthrows. But in comparison to every other Rookie quarterback. He did. Better Or, if not even to every other one of them.
So, I'm not going to complain with how this one, if he develops this into consistent success, I'll say, okay, everyone slept on him.
Okay, that's a pretty good answer right there, Brian Botcher. Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. And again, this is the most comprehensive cut sheet I've ever. Scene, you are the Shador Sanders of producers, and meaning. What that means is you're obviously at a very high level to begin with, but the future is very bright.
I was about to say, I was he drafted in the fifth round. No, I meant based off the performance. I'm talking, you're Shador Sanders of Colorado. You're not Shador Sanders falling day three on draft night. Who are we kidding?
Number to get a board, 888-7104-ISN, 888-710-4476. Let's hit up the busy phone lines. Let's get to Todd in Maryland who leads us off. Todd, I appreciate your patience, man. What was your big takeaway from preseason game number one of the Shador Sanders era in Cleveland?
Yeah. I agree, Todd. I agree. He did light it up. That's right.
I think it's something that we can look forward to. We saw him poised. We saw him really adept at being able to deal with all kinds of extravagant blitz packages. And when the pocket would collapse, he was able to see that right away and improvise and make plays that behooves his rookie status. I'm with you.
What's that? No, I think the Ravens are going to be in the thick of contention like they usually are. I don't think Mark Andrews is going to have the playoff gaff like he did again.
So I like the Ravens' chances as much as anyone in the AFC. I understand why you would ask that question coming from Maryland. You're thinking people are going to have schizophrenia now. I know, I know. This is a bit that JR and Bart do, and I do it too.
And it's always fun when the caller's just not there, and I make up that they're there.
So that's always interesting. And you would think that this is a real call. Anything else, Todd? Man, Todd was so talkative in that phone call. Thank you, buddy.
Number to get a board, 888-7104ISN. 888-710-4476. Listen, I'd rather have crickets than have a phone call or not be there. I know Nick in Baltimore is going to be there. Nick, hope you're having a good evening so far.
What do you have for us on Shadur Sanders? Yep, I am. Todd stole all my thunder, but I don't know where to go from here. But I just want to let you know that, you know, I think I. Uh I have a soft spot for Joe Flacco, so I think he's going to be a mentor for Shador a little bit too.
I'll tell you. That pass when he threaded that needle to the tight end, crossing the middle, crossing the corner of the end zone. was spectacular in what he did. And he does epitomize what a John Unidas is. You know, not the greatest fleet afoot.
But elusive can run a two-minute drill. And Shep, you hit it right on the head. That is an unsung award. Where you have to almost get in the lottery. In my younger years, I did go to the big ballroom in Baltimore and went to that awards ceremony.
It's hard to get in. And I'm going to tell you that you know, when when one of the attributes of Unitis was When he got in the huddle, he commanded leadership. And I and I I'm starting to see that in Shador. People, you know, will go negative on him with the antics. But his focus to me is laser sharp.
12 seconds. What he's doing right now is he's moving that team. Yeah. We'll see what happens. And listen, he's going to probably stumble in the beginning, but a lot of the greats did.
Unitas' first pass in the NFL was an interception, and I guess he just became a scrub after that. You know, this is the most that Johnny. By the way, Nick, this is the first Johnny Unitas comparison to Shador Sanders that I'm hearing about, and that is a throwback name. He was honestly, after Y.A. Tittle, the second true superstar.
In NFL history at the quarterback position. And to this day, Nick, and you know this calling from Baltimore. He is a top-five quarterback in the history of the game. Johnny Unitas doesn't have the Super Bowls because he didn't play in the Super Bowl era. He did for a few years, and maybe if the Colts would have started him against the Jets and not Aramuro, it would be, you know, Johnny Unitas with a Super Bowl victory.
But he was winning NFL championships. When he did come in in Super Bowl III, and you could see Namos was starting to get a little nervous. You know, we were hoping against Hope at that time. But I will tell you this. Shador can run a two minute kind of thing, epitomize what United said.
And I think he has that toughness because the Colorado, he got beat up so much But he just kept getting up and down. I agree. I absolutely agree. Listen, they didn't have the protection around him that other major institutions and football programs have. And he did have to make a lot out of nothing.
And yes, he had an all-world teammate in Travis Hunter. But honestly, there wasn't a lot of NFL talent around him minus Travis Hunter.
So, Nick, great call. It was almost as good as Todd and Maryland, by the way. Almost. Almost. Yeah, they're two good quarterbacks.
You know, Jude can go down as a great. I mean, he does have, he's not the same as United States as far as. You know, he's a little more of a showman. Right. That's okay.
Different era. Right. Very, very, very different era. One was born in the 30s. The other was born in the early 2000s.
So very different personalities. Nick, great call, man. Appreciate you, buddy. You have a great rest of your evening. Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476.
Let's get to Kevin in Baltimore. Kevin, I appreciate the patience, man. How you doing? What do you have for us on Trador Sanders' preseason week one performance? What's going on, Chef?
Good to catch up with you, my brother. Likewise, Kevin.
Well, we talked a lot leading up to the draft here and there and about Shador and you know, look, that kid was obviously born with pretty good chances, right? But he's made the most of those pretty good chances. And I would argue that because of those chances, it actually hurt him. come draft time. If his last name was Brown or Johnson, Or Smith.
or Jordan or Jackson and not Sanders. I believe he had a resume. worthy of being at least a first or second round pick. I totally agree with you, brother. And maybe once they kind of moved off of him getting picked in the upper echelon there.
I feel like they kind of switched gears and kind of took that page from Lamar Jackson's draft day. And honestly, Shep, I think this allows Shador to hold more over the NFL and the critics than it does the NFL holding You know, say him not playing well or whatever over him, you know, because that's kind of NFL in a nutshell, right? 100%. 100%. 100%.
And, you know, he has a relationship with Tom Brady, and Tom Brady, he's not right on everything he does, whether it be comedy roasts, whether it be him roasting the New York Jets at a statue unveiling. But he is right about this particular point. The draft is only one day. The rest of your career is up to you. And Shaddour took that message that Tom Brady gave him to heart.
And again, I know it's one preseason game. I understand it's not the regular season and a lot of the opposition that he's facing won't be there on any given Sunday during the regular season. But we can only go by what we see in front of us. And you can't ask for a better performance out of a rookie. and the fact that he legitimately looked like a first round draft pick.
tells you all you need to know about how wrong the NFL was about him. and how right he ended up being about himself.
So it's really well said, Kevin. Always good going back and forth with you, man. You have a good rest of your Monday evening, okay? Thank you, sir. Have a good evening.
Thanks, Kevin. Great to catch up with you. Great catching up with you as well, Kevin. Appreciate you, man. Number to get aboard is 888-710-4ISN.
That is 888-710-4476. All right, we got Todd and Marilyn who began the segment, who wasn't there. I have a feeling this Todd and Marilyn will be there. Todd, we got you loud and clear? Hey, brother, you there?
We got you, Todd. Go ahead, man. What was your takeaway from Shador Sanders? Good to hear you, old boy. Thanks, brother.
Yeah. Yes, sir. uh big big time, you know, the played with pois. You know, uh It it was just The good old boys in the NFL had to sit down Because the kid really played his heart out. across the board.
You can say that again. And he looked apart, and he was poised, and you like the fact that he was even somewhat critical of his performance afterwards, even though you pretty much couldn't have a better preseason debut. I'm with you, man. You got to love everything you saw from Shador Sanders. There's really no negative reviews you can give the 23-year-old rookie who somehow fell to the 144th overall pick on the third day of the year.
Too late for you, Proto. I hear you. Hey, Todd. Hey, hey, Todd, is this the year, number eight? Finally, he breaks through and has Baltimore in a Super Bowl.
I don't know. I'm not saying right now, but How about maybe?
Okay, all right, that's I like that. You're not jinxing it. But you're also not getting too caught up in predictions, but you're also leaving a little bit of a slither of a window for them to get to a place they haven't been to since the days of Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis' final season. Hey, appreciate the phone call, Todd. All right, buddy.
All right, take care. You too, man. Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. You know, we have given plenty of love to Shador Sanders, and rightfully so, but how about Jackson Dart? and the efficiency that he was able to show in his preseason debut last Saturday.
Over the weekend, I thought that was a really sweet touchdown pass he had to Jordan Humphrey. And he ends up finishing 12 of 19, passing for 154 yards and a touchdown in a 34-25 win over the Buffalo Bills Saturday afternoon. Great to see Brian Davo and Josh Allen catching up. What you also love. From Jackson Dart is the ability he has on the ground.
24 yards for three carries. You got to love that if you are a Giants fan. And yes, there were the typical passes being deflected at the line of scrimmage that happens to every quarterback, not just rookies.
So was this the perfect debut from Jackson Dart? Maybe not. But all in all, you have to love what you saw from the only other quarterback, not named Cam Ward, drafted in the first round in 2025. And all you want to see from a rookie. Is that they're able to drive down a field in an up-tempo approach in an NFL-like offense.
And he was able to do that, very much pleasing the coaching staff, which who are we kidding, is on the hot seat. Brian Dable knows that, New York sports fans know that. And so you love the fact that he was able to lead the Giants in a two-minute drill, which ended up being a field goal. And if you are a fan of Big Blue, The only thing you want at this point Is for Russell Wilson to no longer be a QB1. I know I can speak to Russell Wilson's lack of play and lack of success and regression, whether it be his time in Seattle, his time in Denver, his time in Pittsburgh.
He is a glorified placeholder at this point. And if you are the New York Giants, the future is all about Jackson Dart. Even though Jameis Winston is there, we'd love to see Jameis have some highlights. I don't know why he's a third-string quarterback. For the life of me, you look at the quarterback situation in New Orleans, you look at the quarterback situation elsewhere, like Carolina.
I don't know why Jameis Winston hasn't gotten another look to be a starter. That's a topic for a different day. The touching moment on Saturday with Jackson Dart, it was really cool to see his parents fly in. They ended up taking the red eye to his first NFL preseason game. And it's a trip that Dart made very worthwhile for his family as he led the Giants to not one, not two, but three scoring drives on just four possessions.
And so you have to love what you saw from Jackson Dart. And Jackson Dart. You know, he was also pleased with his day of the day. Hey, Brian Dable, you were the coach of the year in year number one. You had a winning record.
You won a playoff game. Been very different in year two and year three. You know your livelihood, your coaching future is going to be attached at the hip with Jackson Dart. What do you make of preseason game number one from your rookie? That's about what I thought he would do.
Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket.
Some stuff we can work on, but he's doing good. 1 through 10, Botcher, how excited was Brian Dava with Jackson Director? Yeah. For him, usually he's either grumpy or he doesn't speak a lot, anyways.
Well, he's a Bill Belichick disciple. You gotta expect that. You gotta expect that. I'd say that was a solid six.
Okay. He can't be too excited about preseason. All right. Fair enough. He better be because you know what?
At least he's not losing like he is in year two and year three. Speaking of three, their number three overall pick, Abdul Carter, he was on the field for only six snaps, three being pass-rush attempts. But on those snaps, two of them ended up in quarterback freshers.
So, all in all, the Giants have to be very pleased with their top two picks, and they passed the initial preseason test. Number to get a board: 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. We've talked a great deal about Shador Sanders. Let's give some love to Jackson Dart. Marco Belletti, always good to be working with you, man.
We say ship. Marco, Jackson Dart is starting for the Giants in week fill in the blank. Uh If you ask the Giants right now, next year, week one next year. Wow. Yeah.
So you're completely punting on rookie year, on his rookie season. See, you look at it that way, and a lot of people do, and a lot of people love to say, well, you got to get him out there. How do you get to get better? I've never, ever, ever, ever, ever heard a quarterback get worse by sitting his first year or sitting his second year. I've never heard of it.
It's never happened. Let me ask you a question. We all know the famous example in the late 90s. Peyton Manning wins three games. I think he leads the league in interceptions with 28.
You're telling me if Peyton doesn't struggle the way he does in year one and have those learning curves and have those early fails and struggles, he doesn't become what he becomes, especially with the jump he made in year two. By the way, same could be said for Trevor Lawrence. Great. We will never know. Will Aaron Rodgers not be a four-time MVP if he played week one instead of sitting behind Brett Farr for three years?
We don't know the answer. See, I think Rogers, Rogers, we all know he should have been picked over Alex Smith. He slid in that 2005 draft. To me, Aaron Rodgers was going to be great regardless of circumstance. He just happened to wait a little bit too long.
Like, I thought Jordan Love was very capable of starting in year one or year two, but he's playing behind Aaron Rodgers. And we will never know if they were ready because we had to watch them wait. But when they did get their chance, we saw that they were. We've seen a lot of quarterbacks start early and not be ready.
So I don't think it's a detriment. I don't think it's something where it's going to stop Jackson Dart from getting to whatever potential he might get to. If the Giants have their way, they would love for Jackson Dart to sit the whole year for Russell Wilson to play for him to watch.
Next year, Wilson's gone. Jameis Winston's your backup and Jackson Dart is your starter. That's what they would love.
Now, is that going to come to fruition? We'll find out. Because when you're two and 12, and if you stink, at some point, you're going to have to go to Jackson Dart because the clamoring will be too big if you think he's ready. The Giants are hopeful that they can stay afloat, that Russell Wilson allow them to just tread water so that they don't have to make that decision. That's what they want.
Whether or not they get to that, we'll find out. You know, Eli did not start right away, as you will recall. It was Kurt Warner. Kurt Warner, believe it or not, struggled a little bit in New York and then has a career renaissance in Arizona. But I thought it was pivotal.
Eli Manning playing in year one. And we all remember what happened in week 17 against the Cowboys when he looked finally like the number one overall pick. And then we just saw his career take off.
So I hear what you're saying. I think you do have to make sure, unless you are playing and you're a contender, you need to get your franchise quarterback out there as soon as possible. I hear you. You know what? And we won't know with Eli Team because he looked awful in his rookie year.
Except for week 17. No, he had a couple of games in week 17. He didn't even look that great. There was a couple games before that against Pittsburgh that he looked good. And in the game against Cincinnati, he looked okay.
And there were games, the game against the Ravens. He had to get pulled to Kurt Warner back in there because he didn't know what the hell he was doing. We don't know. We won't find out. The whole point is that you would think that if you're going to be the guy at some point, You're going to rise.
Yes. You think we hope we assume, but there is the possibility that if you put somebody into the fire when they're not ready, you could affect their confidence. Everybody's got a different school of thought. The new thing is now: if I'm paying you, damn it, go out there and go play. And I understand the concept, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.
I just think the Giants truly hope. And this is why they brought in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. They truly don't want to force this until they think Jackson Dart is completely ready. Not a little ready, kind of ready. They don't want anything to mess this up because they know they got one shot.
Dable and Shane have one shot, and it's Jackson Dart. They're hopeful to still be there when it gets that shot, but they want to make sure they do it right. And in their mind, right means sit back and wait. I'd rather you be over ready than under. And to Marco's point, you know, people were shocked when the Maras and the Tishas elected to bring back Dable and Shane for year number four.
There is not a hotter seat in football, maybe with the exception of Mike McDaniel, than in New Jersey when it comes to Brian Dable's coaching staff. Number to get a board is 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. When you look at Jackson Dart, And Marco explained it beautifully. What would you do with him in his rookie year? Are you wanting to see him sit it out?
Or based on what you saw in preseason game number one, Do you feel like the best thing for him? It would actually be to play as much as possible given he's more ready than we even anticipated. We saw that in preseason game number one. We'll get to your Jackson Dart calls on the other side. We did not forget about the debut of Cam Ward.
For some reason, the number one overall pick, because of the attention Shador Sanders has got, is going under the radar with his preseason debut. We'll get to the number one overall pick and why he's going to mean so much to Tennessee. We'll get to your calls as well at 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. And if you can't get through our busy phone lines, you can always follow me, tweet me at SheponAir. Before we come back, let's get to our latest sports slash with the aforementioned quarterback expert, Marco Valletti.
You are listening to the JR Sport Brief. Here's David Shepard. Welcome in, everybody. This indeed is the JR Sport Brief. My name is David Shepard, in for the great JR.
Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. You can always hit me up at SheponAir, whether it be Twitter or Instagram, if you can't get through our busy phone lines. You know, so much attention is being paid. Towards Jalen Milro and Shador Sanders and Jackson Dart that the number one overall pick, Cam Ward. No one's like talking about him nationally.
Like Adam Schefter. Who's not just about being an NFL insider, but he's all about engagement and content. We obviously know Adam Schefter has been around for two decades covering the sport at the highest level. He didn't reference Cam Ward once. But he was referencing Shiloh Sanders in his tweets over the weekend.
So for me, I don't know why Cam Ward is going so under the radar as a number one overall pick. I think it's because he's so humble and he plays for Tennessee, where let's be honest, along with Chicago, is a place where quarterbacks go to die, whether it be Jake Locker, whether it be Marcus Mariota, Vince Young. Right? Let's just be honest. Will Levis, like, they've struggled a lot at the quarterback position.
So I'm not surprised that Cam Ward is getting overlooked. I'm just shocked that he's getting this overlooked. We will talk about his debut at the top of the hour because I think Tennessee is in for a real treat with who they drafted number one overall. And he will have a C.J. Stroud Jaden Daniels type impact in year number one.
You heard it here first. Before we talk, Cam Ward, let's get back to the busy phone lines: 888-710-4ISN, 888-710-4476. Alex in Texas, hope you're having a good evening so far. Hope it's better than the Dallas Cowboys fan. And what do you have to say about the New York Giants and Jackson Dart with his preseason debut?
Well uh Greetings, Sharpa. Here's what I have to say about Jackson Dart, and I'm going to disagree. I don't think. Brian Dabel is on the hot seat. Talk to me this time next year.
I think the John Mayer is going to give Dable and Shane a kind of a restart because They have their quarterback now whereas they didn't before. But they but look Alex, but Alex, but you know they did. Because they signed Daniel Jones, I don't know why, but for $40 million a year after that playoff win.
So they did have their quarterback at one point. You know what I mean? That's true, but I guess they didn't draft him, is I guess what I'm trying to say.
Well, that's a fair point. That was Dave Gettelman. But here is, Alex, here's what I will say. I will tell you, in talking to enough people around the league, the two coaches who are most on the hot seat coming into this season are Brian Dable and Mike McDaniel. Oh, I would agree about Mike McDaniel.
I just think that Dayboy is on a two-year restart. Yeah, because of Jackson Dart. That's. I I I hear I hear what you're saying. Um But when you win Coach of the Year, and win ten ten games your first year.
And then in year two and year three, you don't win that many games combined? I don't know if you get an additional year. after year four if you struggle. Um Yeah, okay, that's understandable. Right.
But listen, I was surprised they brought him back. I was surprised they brought back Robert Sala, and I thought Salah. Was going to get a whole new life with Aaron Rodgers. They fire him five games in.
So we'll, we'll, you know, obviously. Mara's a lot different ownership group than Woody Johnson for sure, but we'll see what happens. But I do hear you. Because it's a rookie quarterback. There is more of a shelf life than just, hey, let's see what you do in year number four because it is a process and you do have the excuse of having a rookie.
So there's a little more of a window you have because of that.
So we'll see what happens. We'll see what unfolds. But, Alex, I appreciate the call, man. It was good to talk to you. Are you in?
Tomorrow for JR? Yes, sir. Okay, I'll talk to you then.
Sounds good, Alex. Good to hear from you in Texas. Number to get aboard, 888-710-4ISN. That is 888-710-4476. Let's get to John in Maryland.
John, hope you're having a good evening so far in the DMV. And what do you have for us, sir? Hi. Hi, how you doing? No complaints, John.
How you doing, buddies? Pretty good, really. I was uh Listening to you. uh discussing Shador. And I think you're jumping the gun a little bit.
Yeah, three. You know, we've seen some kids play in the uh preseason that have looked tremendous. And uh really It's too early way too early to tell on him. And you know why the NFL didn't draft him early? Because they were wrong and because they jumped the gun on his perceived reputation and the distraction that he would be as a Sanders?
That didn't matter to them. They didn't want the dramatics. of him and his attitude. But John. They don't want that.
The NFL, above everything, doesn't want that malarkey. But John. That's what they were looking at. I know he should have gone higher. I'm not that foolish.
Sure. But John, John, I want to be very clear. I hear what you're saying. You can't go to Vegas. And bet your mortgage on Shador Sanders over one preseason game.
I understand completely what you're saying. You don't want to rush to judgment, but I feel. That I'm putting this in its proper perspective. The biggest indicator we will have for how someone will look in the NFL. is how they play in the preseason.
That's all we have to go by at this point. He's going against NFL caliber players. He is picking up the blitz at a rate. that is well beyond Just a rookie, the way he was moving the Browns down the field, the way he was able to make airtight window throws, how accurate he was outside of the pocket, that translates to the regular season.
So while I hear what you're saying about don't get too much on the hype train, you also have to be fair-minded. about this is the biggest sign To this point, as a starting quarterback one day. You may be right. All I'm saying is he wasn't playing against NFL players. Sure, he was.
No way. Half those guys are going to be on an NFL roster. I don't know if they all started. No, they won't. No, they won't.
They will not be. Look, each team's got ninety to one hundred players. And if you think that they're playing in the preseason games, They're not. Yeah, they are not playing. We see it differently, John, but I appreciate where you're coming from, and I appreciate the phone call, buddy.
You have a good rest of your night. I'm going to call you at the end of the season in the middle of the season. All right. I look forward to revisiting this conversation, John, because I'm telling you, get in now while the stock is still not premium with Shador Sanders. The stock should be even higher with Cam Ward.
We explain that next. David Shepard, in for the great JR on the Infinity Sports Network. We're coming right back.
