Ladies and Gentlemen, the following contest is set for one flaw. Introducing first, from another episode, Q&A with Kolov, The Devil's Nightmare. Just go to kolov.net and just send me a direct message, direct email, and you'll get a personal phone call from me. But today, in studio, this is an added privilege and a blessing, in studio, Jeff Call, Dr. Jeff Call, welcome to Q&A with Kolov. Well, thank you for inviting me. I really enjoyed meeting you and many of the folks here. Well, and in meeting many of the folks here, that said, Dr. Jeff wears lots of different hats. In fact, not only did we do a part, have one show, one man up show with Jeff, he's got so many stories, we had to do two shows, and I think we're going to bring him back for a couple more down the road here as well. But, until that time, you've just recently come on, Stu Epperson reached out and talked, I guess, convinced you to come aboard to the Truth family. And so, here you are, that's how we met, and I'm excited, looking forward to working with you.
What'll be your role or what's your goal, you think? No, that's a great question. I met Stu at a dinner at a mutual friend's house. I didn't know he was going to be there.
He didn't know I was going to be there. But Stu and I have had similar people in our background that have mentored us. And so, we had a lot of things in common just a few months ago, and that relationship just grew. And of course, anyone who knows Stu knows he's a very enthusiastic person. You don't have to be around him very long to feel his energy.
And he's always recruiting people. So, I wanted to do something. I obviously know a lot of folks and been in ministry a long time myself, and I really bought into the vision. What's funny is I think the most common thing over the years, besides, how are you, Jeff, or the typical greeting, hello, people will say, hey, you have a really unique voice. Have you ever thought about doing radio? And so, when I went home and told my wife that I was thinking Stu wanted to maybe get me on board, she said, are you doing programming?
I said, no, I think I'm doing sales. So, evidently, you have to be able to say something too, not just have a nice voice. Right, right, right. That could be critical or that could be important. You don't want to throw any word salads out there for the record.
No, no word salad. But I realized that there's a lot to do in any type of ministry. And you come here to the radio station and the salespeople are important, but so are all the technical people that are keeping everything together.
And so, it's just an opportunity to grow a team. I've been in ministry a long time. Like I said, I have a lot of friends, a lot of opportunities.
But I live in Charlotte. The last couple of years, I had a couple health issues. I actually had three heart attacks and I didn't smoke, I didn't drink.
I was told as a young boy that if I didn't smoke and drink, I'd live longer. So, now I have more questions. Yeah, yeah. Hey, how'd that work? So, I didn't. Wow, three. Yeah, the doctors fixed me up.
I got several stents and I'm thankful for atrium health. You got another chance. Yeah, I appreciate that. But I thought maybe it's time to slow down for my world travels and all my endeavors and try to focus my ministry and opportunities in the North Carolina or the Carolina area. Yeah, because you're in Charlotte, North Carolina. Of course, Truth Radio plays kind of nationwide in a variety of cities. Your focus is going to be North, South Carolina, I guess, more specifically, right, in terms of maybe you're looking for businesses out there that would like to partner with Truth Radio. Obviously, promote their products and what they're doing, but really understand the vision of Truth Radio.
Would that be fair to say? Oh, absolutely. I think there's a lot of, you know, if you just drove as much as any, just drive regular, you're normally using the radio and maybe you're not as discriminated about what you're listening to. But there's a lot of people who want to listen to Christian radio in particular. And there's a lot of wonderful speakers delivering some great content. And in order to keep Christian radio on, it's dependent on faithful supporters, advertisers, sponsors.
Absolutely. And so, you know, I was trying to think who the moody guy was. There's a pastor there that really resigned. I actually went on a program and they wanted me to do a devotional. I found out I was doing a devotional with them.
I thought I made the big time then. But I've listened to Christian radio for a long time. And what Stu and Mike, one of the main guys here, they have asked me to build a network of folks here in the Charlotte and Spartanburg and Greenville area to help sponsor some Christian shows, maybe even do some programming. And so I look forward to being a ministry to business people myself, but also trying to help them through this process and see what an effective medium this can be for them. Yeah, advertisers, sponsors, listeners, right?
Yeah, absolutely. A lot of different ways you can support Truth Radio. And so if you are listening, you know, in North South Carolina, and you would have an interest at least finding out more. Jeff, how would they connect with you on LinkedIn?
Or where would they go? Yeah, primarily, they would contact me at 704-989-8517. That'd be my mobile number, my business number. And then they can also reach me through jcall, K-A-H-L, at truthnetwork.com. That would be my official email. Certainly they could reach me on, you know, any other medium, if they can find it, LinkedIn, or what have you.
Or they can just call the radio station, set up an appointment. I'd be happy to meet them anywhere. I just love meeting with people, try to be an encouragement to whoever I meet. And just to give you a quick backdrop on Jeff, and we went into a lot more detail, a fascinating story from a tumultuous upbringing in Detroit, Michigan, that led him into ministry school after graduation in Wisconsin, and on into essentially full-time ministry, but then transitioning out into the marketplace, and ministry in the marketplace, and then into the marketplace, and ministry in the marketplace is the way I would phrase it. So he's an entrepreneur, so many stories of success, traveled to 60, get to 68 different countries that he has traveled to, and is making a difference and an impact.
And let me just ask you this before we transition to your questions. I've heard a little bit about your lovely bride, girl, of 37 years. You guys met at Bible school.
And I love the story. She was a senior. You were a freshman. You approached her, and she made it crystal clear.
Seniors don't go out with freshman, but man, you must have schmoozed her over. You are a salesman. You won her over 37 years ago. Well, my greatest trait might just be persistence.
There you go. Persistence. And her dad loved me. He grew up, he's from Waco, Texas, and then their distant family came from- She's Latino, right? Your wife's Latino.
From Mexico, yes. And she had 15 brothers and sisters, by the way. Wow. And we have 72 Hispanic nephews and nieces.
Whoa. So I might be one of the only white guys in that whole family, but you know what- Only Caucasians. You know, I grew up in Detroit. I'm fully aware of all the nationalities, and I just love working with them. And then traveling around the world, I have met some of the nicest people in all the world in different places. And I realize there's lots of tensions there.
I haven't had them. And I love my wife dearly. I love her relatives too. Three kids? Three adult children. And then- What are their names? Hannah, Isaac, and Josiah.
Wow. And so, Bible names. They sound like biblical names.
Yeah, Bible names. And I probably get their birthdays, but I don't want to waste time. Yeah. Don't blow it. Don't blow it. Just stop right there. And then six grandchildren. All girls.
Yeah. And then I think there's one coming, but I'm not supposed to announce anything. I've got one coming as well. I have 12 grand babies, six girls, six boys.
So the next one's going to be the tiebreaker at this point. I know we've chatted about it before. I didn't dive into it a lot, but I grew up in such a distorted kind of family structure that I didn't know was normal. So when I got married, I didn't want my kids to have a dog because my dad, who I got to meet in 19 years, he only wanted visitation rights so we would take care of the dogs. He showed seven doberman pinchers. So we had to brush their teeth, clean their cages. It became very clear to me that I was there to, I wasn't there as a distant son.
I was there as an employee, a caretaker of his hobby. And so I thought, well, no, I'm not going to get my kids a dog because I don't want that to be true. And I had to have Christian men say, Jeff, it's perfectly normal to have a dog. Kids want dogs, Jeff. And it's okay. So, Hey, let's listen.
Cause you guys, the more we talk, they're more like, man, there's so much relatable here. Like my mom was a dog person, but never house-trained him. And it was absolutely, I'll just say it, disgusting to get up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom and step on something.
I'll just leave it at that. And I vowed I will never have dogs when I grow up. I'm like, it was just disgusting.
They pee all over the place. Am I supposed to say that? Anyway, I did.
It's a podcast anyway. And so, you know, we got kids and they're like, dad, we want a dog. And I'm like, we ain't got no dog. You saw what was coming.
At least you convinced in your mind, this was coming. We got dogs. We had dogs.
Kids had dogs. That happens all the time. In fact, probably the listeners don't even realize that as adults, you're probably doing things out of a reaction to things that happen as a child. But you don't even know it.
Cause it's not, you never been confronted with it. Yeah. You're not, yeah.
You're not connected to those data points. Right. Or, or yeah, for one, one dot to the next. I always say, if it makes sense for you, go keep doing it. But if someday you'll be confronted with, with a, with a creative alternative to your thinking.
Yeah, that's exactly right. So, all right. Well, great. But I could talk to you all day long, uh, Q&A with Kolov, questions and answers. We'll, we'll segue. And I do want to encourage you if you haven't gone over and listened to, uh, Jeff's more of Jeff's story, part one, part two, two parts, which is very rare that I do that, but his story is so fascinating.
I want to, I want to really encourage you to consider that. Go into the archives and pull up the man up show, Jeff Call, Dr. Jeff Call. All right. Good doctor.
The doctor's in the house. So yeah. Question or two for me that that is the name of the show. And so, well, you know, I'm just getting to know you and Nikita, I really appreciate your, your temperament, the fact that your, your life story points to Christ, you know, even though you probably wouldn't have said that 35 years ago, right. At all, at all, Jeff, not at all. You know, I'm, I'm thinking of, uh, of Saul who just, just came to Christ and Ananias, who was one of the first disciples to try to work with Saul, who eventually became Paul. I remember in the scripture saying, uh, uh, I'm supposed to go work with him, but he's the guy that killed people.
Isn't he? Lord, are you sure you want me to go talk to this guy? And the Lord said, he's chosen. I chosen him even in the midst of all of the things he was going through. So all the, all the life story that you have, once you come to Christ is just an opportunity to point people to Christ. And, and, uh, you know, I'm, I appreciate, uh, you know, I would, you know, maybe, maybe I would change something on a personal decision, but I don't really entertain what I can't change. The fact is I, God showed me what to do in life when I have things not go my way.
Right. So, so those are, there's some lessons in that as well. But, uh, so, so, you know, you have a pretty large audience. You've been on this, you've been doing this a long time. Uh, you know, what, you know, what are the, what, what is there an emphasis on man up that you, that you have typically, or, you know, on your show that, that, that you emphasize over and over again? I mean, I, I'm on the show, not so, so much. And I don't want people, I always tell people, don't be misled by the, the, you know, the name of the man up show, the other show we're talking about, you know, this is Q and A with Koloff. So, you know, I've had men, women, young guys, you know, just people of all ages and variety of backgrounds on both shows.
Um, because even though it's called the man up show, you know, I do challenge men more on a, uh, basis of man up conferences, uh, man up dinners, uh, man up breakfast and, and ultimately man camps, uh, that, uh, one of my wrestling partners, Lex Luger and I do every spring and every fall. And, and, and the vision for that is different from the, the shows themselves. Like my goal here, like with your story or anyone else's, is just to have people on and get their story out there and how they're making an impact. And, and for a guy like yourself, you know, you, you're, you've manned up and, and you're, you've made a decision to follow Christ and you're out there making a difference for God's kingdom. And so, uh, I do challenge people, you know, to, to live a godly life, you know, through the radio shows and, and that what we produce here, but more than anything, the vision for the conferences and camps, et cetera, when God first gave it to us centered around first Thessalonians 5 23 to be whole, W H O L E, to be whole in spirit, soul and body.
So to be, be healthy, be a whole man, uh, living a holy life, making yourself wholly available to the Lord. And so the challenge and the emphasis is in, in manning up is, is if they come to camp, they're going to dive in for five days, a deep dive into what it looks like to be a godly man, a godly husband, a godly father, and then give them the tools to go back home and do that, to actually walk that out. Um, and so we see just numerous, numerous, numerous success stories.
Now, not everyone been, it hadn't been a hundred percent of success because people are people. And, and some of the times, you know, come to a conference or come to camp and even, I'll just say, you know, kind of pose their way through it. I'll just say it that way and not fully embrace what we're teaching. Um, but, uh, all that to say, that's the overall arching goal, whether it's the radio shows, the conferences, camps, uh, the vision is to, is to just call men to, to live, live a man, from God's point of view, you know, the world will, you know, there's been, I believe a real attack. I believe the reason the Lord's raised me up in this ministry is because the attack on manhood and masculinity over the last several decades, not just years, but decades.
And so that it's, uh, the timing of it is to really ask men to, to be that man from God's point of view. That's fantastic. You're listening to the Truth Network and truthnetwork.com. Anyway, Facebook, go look up my new fan page, Nikita Koloff fans and like it and follow today. One of my favorite passages of scripture is the maniac of Gadara who ran uncontrollably through town naked and they tried to chain him. Didn't work. Boom. They probably tried to medicate him. They certainly tried to distance them and move him out of town. Welcome to the grave site.
Yeah. People would hear him in the middle of the night screaming and I'm sure there are good parents who say, hey, listen, this is someone I want you to run around with. But it's interesting to me that at least with all of their treatment availability, and I'm sure they use all of it on this person, it wasn't until Jesus came to shore off that boat and he cast the demons out and he had an encounter with the living Christ. And then you find this maniac of Gadara in a completely different posture. He's sitting at the feet of Jesus. He's clothed in his right mind. And whenever I think of a disciple of Christ or I think of someone who's at least been influenced by the living truth, I think they have to be sitting at the feet of Jesus, a position of submission and teachability.
They need to be clothed. They have to have a position of sensitivity to the things of God. And then they're in their right mind, which was a position of stability. And none of those things happen until the living word comes into your life. So how important is the living word when you're talking to these men at these events?
Yeah, it's critical. In fact, the most recent man up dinner I did, what I did is I hopefully painted an illustration of the spiritual warfare that we find ourselves in. Ephesians 6 and 12 talks about it, right? We don't wrestle against flesh and blood. One of my favorite scriptures, by the way, Jeff. We don't wrestle against flesh, ha ha ha, wink, wink. We don't struggle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, dark, evil forces that we're really fighting against, right? So for you listening out there, your wife's not your enemy, your husband's not your enemy, your children aren't your enemy, your mom and dad's not your enemy. We don't wrestle against flesh and blood. There's a spiritual enemy of our soul at work here, and we live in that world presently.
That's the world in which we find ourselves living in. Hence the importance of Ephesians chapter 12 with the armor of God, putting on the armor of God. And then in addition to putting the armor on, so all that to say, I try to paint an illustration of what the two kingdoms look, the contrast of two kingdoms, the kingdom of darkness versus the kingdom of light, the spiritual realm, and the reality of it as much as the physical realm in which we live and we're more familiar with, and then having the heart of a warrior and what it looks like to be a warrior for Christ. And then I conclude with a call to action.
Anything I do, whether it's our camp, conference, it's a call to action. And the three things, Jeff, I challenge them with is the word, being in their Bible, reading the Bible, studying it, memorizing scripture, studying to show thyself approved, memorizing scripture, equipping themselves a sword of the Spirit, which is one of the pieces of armor, is the sword of the Spirit. One of the proactive pieces, right? Now, most of the armor is for defense and protection.
This is for offense, right? Jesus used the word as an offense those 40 days in the desert when Satan tried to tempt him. The word of God says, well, if you never study the word, if you don't know the word, then you're defenseless against the enemy of your soul. So the three things we emphasize right off the number one off the top is the Bible. Number two is prayer. And number three I include as a call to action is fasting.
Matthew chapter six, Jesus said, and when you pray and when you fast, he didn't say if you pray or if you fast, he said when, when, when. So those are my three calls to action with the Bible being so foundational to our walk with Christ. Yeah, I've had that privilege of working with lots of, lots of people and I've seen spiritual maturity come in a lot of, you know, in a lot of those folks. But what I, what I found is there's three elements that are really important. The one is truth. Like you just said, uh, you know, if, if we're going to see men change, the word of God has to come bear upon their soul. Um, and they're thinking that, you know, that what is, what does the God's word say?
So we got to stay faithful to that. Then there's, uh, the power of touch, which I consider service. You know, we got to get people out there serving once they understand who they serve.
They, they, he has a, he has an interest for them to serve a certain way. But then I, there's another element there and I want, I'd like to get your thought on this is the, is the, for a spiritual maturity to happen. It's truth, it's touch, but it's also transparency. Uh, when you work with men, is it hard for, is it, do some men have such a shell, uh, you know, where they want to have an aura of, of perfection and, and they're hesitant to, to share a weakness, open up a struggle, uh, because they feel like their acceptance is probably based on a level, a view of perfection rather than vulnerability, your personal view of the, yeah, instead of just being vulnerable and opening up and being transparent.
Um, and so, so the short answer to that is, is yes. And, and, and at our, at our man camp, we give opportunities to really dive deeper into, you know, guys who are really hurt and wounded and just masquerading or pretending or posing, um, or these walls have been built up because of all the hurts of their past. It is, our hope is they're in an environment where the Lord can highlight some of those things. And then we provide them the opportunity to bring that into the light so that the Lord can put the healing balm of Gilead on it, or the Lord can step in, heal that, that wounded hearts so that they can go home with a healed heart.
And the ones who are the most walking, the healthiest, if you will, or the least wounded are the ones who are the most willing to become vulnerable and open up. Right. And, um, and so, yeah, that's a chat.
Yes. So that is a challenge with, with getting mad. And in some cases, Jeff, in some cases, rightfully so only because, um, there certainly been times I'm sure. Well, I know from stories they've, they've opened up and somebody betrayed the trust. They thought they could trust somebody and be vulnerable with that person only to be betrayed by that person. But, you know, if history serves itself well, and I believe it does, going back to the Bible, I believe there's a man named Jesus who was betrayed.
And so nothing we experience, he himself hadn't experienced or been exposed to that we can certainly learn from. Yeah. Yeah. That, that, yeah, that's great. I remember when I was in Bible college, my first year, first revival, uh, service that we had. And then this, this, this leader in the school got up and wanted to ask forgiveness from the student body, which he didn't have to. I, I believe you have an advocate with the father.
You can go straight to, straight to go into a box. Uh, but I, but I, but he, he felt like he wanted to get it off his chest. I remember he said, uh, you know, I didn't get a deer this year. So I, I was driving home from town and I, he had a suburban and so he saw some deer in the woods, so he didn't get any venison for that season. So he decided to go, uh, steer his vehicle off the road into the, into the field and run over a couple of deer. So he could have some venison and, and he was going to report himself to the DNR. And, and, and that, that's probably the right thing to do.
You probably shouldn't do that. But as a, as a young person at 18 years old, you have to understand, I never had a man in my life that ever admitted any problem. Uh, you know, they, they, they would get at you, get after you because you weren't perfect, but they never admitted fault in anything at any time. And so this was like a surprise to me that this man would get up in a group setting. And, and be honest about something that, you know, we can argue about whether he had to say it publicly or not, but he did. And it was a benefit to me as a young man. Uh, you know, simple. Now one, I was, I was going to ask him if I can go to town with them next time and see if there's any deer, because being from Detroit, that seemed like a great, great activity.
That sounds like fun. But, but, but two, I just felt like that was needed. I remember the second man that got up was a Bible teacher and he was struggling with his salvation. And he said he got that settled that week and he's a Bible teacher. And it struck me as an 18 year old that older men, just because they're older, doesn't make them perfect.
And, and Satan will attack every person at any given time. Doesn't matter who you are. And, and I was, I was so glad that he got up to talk about it because I was starting to, you know, question some things in my own, as you grow in your faith, you start wondering if you really meant it earlier. Right. Uh, but, but, but, uh, have you, have you, have you had men that, that were an encouragement to you because of their honesty and character? Yeah.
And, and, but, and I'm gonna share a little caveat, a couple of quick stories to the, to the being vulnerable part. You know, Lex Luger, my, my ministry partner who, who does the camps with me, and we've done a lot of ministry. I love that name, by the way. I got stuck with a regular name, Jeff. Lex Luger. Well, that was his wrestling name for the record, but grew up in blue collar, Buffalo, New York. And, uh, you know, just loving parents, but hardworking, loving parents, blue collar parents, whose dad said, if I ever see a tear roll down your cheek, like I will, I'll give you, really give you something to cry about.
Right. So in other words, you know, it's kinda like that song, big, big boys don't cry, right? You know, men don't cry.
That was the message Lex took away. So when he gave his life, the day he gave his life to Christ, April 23rd, 2006, with a police, uh, jail chaplain, he was like bawling uncontrollably while at the same time apologizing to the chaplain for bawling. Cause he's like, I don't normally do this or cry like this. I mean, the Holy spirit was all over him, Jeff. He would be uncontrollably bawling, right?
No problem. And chaplain Steve was so gracious. He's like, Lex, those are cleansing tears. That's all those are. Those are cleansing tears. You cry as much as you need to cry, cry. It's okay. And then the second quick story I want to share just recently, I was with a man and he said, he was, I don't cry in front of my kids. I go, well, that's not good.
He just kind of looked at me. I go, if you're going to put up this front that, that you're, that you have no vulnerability that, that I said, I'm not telling you to be a cry baby. I'm not telling you that. But, but last time I checked the shortest scripture in the Bible was two words, Jesus wept. So I would say, if it's okay for our role model to weep, it's okay for you to weep.
In fact, I'll suggest that if your children see you cry from time to time, you know, and in that certain setting that that's going to be, draw you closer to your children and your children closer to you by being that, that vulnerable. Right. And so, yeah, it's been the overall, Archie, now I kind of forgot the last question you kind of asked me there, but in sharing those points, but. You did good. You did good. That was, I kind of forgot what I asked.
I did too. You'll have to forgive us out there. I'll have to listen to the replay, but, but so, so, so overall the great questions, really great questions. I think our listeners will benefit a lot from, from those. And, and I guess we, on that note, we can, we can wrap up the show, but what one more time, Jeff now beyond, you know, supporting truth radio, you do a lot of other things. So let's give our listeners just where they can reach. I know they can reach you through truth radio.
You have LinkedIn, I think a LinkedIn Dr. Jeff call on LinkedIn. And then, of course, through the J call at truth, network.com. They can just write me anytime. I'll answer right away.
