This is the Truth Network. When you think of the name Reverend Billy Graham, what immediately comes to mind? How about the word legacy? Coming up, Ben Graham, part of the family lineage.
Actor, author, pastor, don't go anywhere. Stay tuned. This is the United States Champion. Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is set for one flaw.
Introducing first, from Lithuania, he weighs 123 kilos, the Russian nightmare, the Kita Kolob. Now, the Devil's Nightmare. Welcome back to another episode of It's Time to Man Up. You know, when I think of a man's man, when I think of somebody who has, shall we say, manned up, I think of this man. I mean actor, author, pastor, I think director, writer, producer, maybe I'm throwing a few things in there, maybe he's not. But then again, we're going to find out because right now hopefully I've piqued your curiosity because I have with me today fifth generation following the Graham footsteps. That would be Reverend Billy Graham.
Ben Graham, welcome to the Man Up show. Hey, thank you so much for having me on here. That was a very kind introduction and I'll throw out too, father of four boys. I don't know if that really makes you any manlier, but it just sounds good. I would say if you're fathering four boys, you are the man's man. Come on, I'm just saying there.
Come on. I told my father-in-law one time, he had four daughters and he's like, you know, we were kind of having this discussion. He said four boys.
He's like, you know, I was manly and he goes, maybe it was that perm in the 70s, I don't know. But you know, four boys. But let me tell you, 10 months ago, I became a grandfather of, we have a beautiful granddaughter, my oldest son and his wife gave us a little granddaughter and that has changed my life. Grandkids, way better than kids and she is so precious and to be honest, she could, she don't know this yet, but she holds power over me.
She could have anything she wants and G Paul will spend his money for her. Well, so there's much relatability there. There's a lot of relatability there in many ways. One, I raised four daughters, so there's that relatability in terms of raising four and actually my youngest daughter, Colby, and her husband Andrew just adopted their first child, which technically now is my 12th grandchild, Ben. 12.
12. And so I can tell you, yes, there is something for anyone out there listening that has yet to have grandchildren. There is something special, extra special with the grandchildren for sure. For sure, for sure. So, well, and so you brought up the four boys.
How old are they and tell us about your bride too. So, well, I'll start with that. I had desires to play basketball in college and had opportunities and I had committed to a university. I was the starting point guard as a freshman with the four seniors and, you know, it was pre-season and I'd go to practice and my dad would come and I'd say, hey dad, what do you think I should do? As I back up, my brothers and I started singing as a music group in Christian music. We recorded our first album when I was 12.
I was the oldest and then we toured and then I surrendered to preach at 14 and started preaching all over the country, you know, as a teenager in between, you know, school and on the weekend. So I loved basketball, wanted to play and we'd go to practice and my dad, sometimes he'd come with me and I'd say, hey dad, what do you think I should do? He's like, I'd do what God wants. I was like, no, but if he was me, what would you do? He said, I would do what God wants.
I was like, no, no, no, you're not getting it. Of course, my dad may be fine. What does God want? You know, the running joke in our family is when you're born as a grandma, it's congratulations, it's a preacher.
Right. You know, but the reality is, you know, my parents just wanted me to do God's will. That was it, whether it was being a preacher or whatever, but I knew God had called me and so I was struggling and finally I walked away from basketball to go into seminary and be a preacher. And I knew I was doing what God wanted, but I was struggling.
And that's not to say you can't do both. You can play sports and serve God. But for me, I just, I had a moment where I had to choose this day who I was going to serve. And finally I said, all right, Lord, I'll serve you. But I wasn't overly happy about it.
I'm struggling with it. And my dad goes, hey, I'm going on this hunting trip to northwest Missouri, go with me. And I was like, Dad, I got school and I'd been helping a friend out who is a funeral director. I was helping out at the funeral, working a little bit part time. And I said, I got work, I can't go. And he said, just go.
Well, I went. What I did not know is the farmer had a daughter and that's where I met my wife on that deer hunting trip. And now we've been married over 25 years and she's just absolutely the best. And so I always say, had I not done what God had called me to do, her and I would have never met. And what was cool is that next fall she was already planning on coming to the same Bible college that I had ended up going to.
And so, you know, God just had already been putting all that together. And so we got married and then now we have our four boys. Our oldest is 24.
He was almost 24, 21. And we have two boys still at home, 15 and 13. And our oldest son, just amazing talent. All our kids, they took after the gram side. They're all taller than me.
And I kind of took after my mom's side and didn't get quite as much height. They've outgrown me, but, uh, just good, good young men. And, uh, my, my oldest two have both have a couple of businesses.
They do their own thing. A matter of fact, you and I were together at an event a couple of weeks ago and my son had his company set up their, uh, um, old us outdoors, which started as a result of, you know, he, um, didn't feel like he wanted to get vaccinated, got booted out of the military. Of course, uh, ultimately ended up getting an honorable discharge, but through that, he didn't really know what all was going to happen and just trusting God. And he started this company and it just, it took off and he's done really well with that. And, and, uh, and then our second son also has a couple of businesses and they've just done well.
They love God and love mom and dad. And so we're very thankful for that. And then our third son, I mentioned to you before we went on air, we're heading to Puerto Rico, he plays baseball and we got invited, he got invited to play on a summer league in Puerto Rico with some of the best of the best. And so we're going there and, uh, he is heading into the 10th grade, but, you know, uh, just a phenomenal baseball player and, and, uh, as some amazing opportunities. So, you know, the joke with the four boys is always, which one of you is going to be the next preacher and they all kind of, you know, snicker at that, right. And it tells you how Billy want to be a baseball player. And, and, uh, we were going through, there had been a couple of years since we'd went through it. So we were going through the whole thing with some friends and, you know, it says, Billy want to be a baseball player and Carson's like, Hey dad, just like me.
And I was like, yep. And you know, about 30 seconds goes by and he goes, Oh man, does that mean I'm going to be the preacher? And so we tell him, you know, never say never with God, cause you know, you just don't know. And so, um, you know, we, we'll see, but you know, they all, uh, the older two love God, the younger two love God, but they're still, uh, young and growing, but, um, you know, there's nothing greater. I think the Bible says this, Paul said this, or maybe as John said this, I have no greater joy than here's my children walk in truth. And you know, and that's our prayers that our children just would grow up and love God. And, and, uh, and they certainly love God. They love our nation. And, uh, you know, I've seen our, my young, my older two try to take a stand for our country and in good ways.
And this is good young men. And I'm thankful for that. No, that, that is a blessing as a parent. And I speak again for, you know, as a dad and a granddad. Yeah. Just, uh, you know, what a blessing blesses your heart to, to know your kids are in a good place on solid ground. Right. And, and just, uh, you know, pursuing that relationship. That's what any, any God fearing parent certainly wants. And, and, uh, that, yeah, it's kind of your story is kind of a, you know, but, but the sons are trying to figure out by process of elimination, you know, who, who the next, next pass, who the next sixth generation is.
Right. Or whatever. But, uh, absolutely wired as a kid, one time, a missionary said, he said, I told God, I'd never go to Africa, you know, guess what I'm asking? I heard that as a kid, I was like, that's how it works.
I was like, all right, Lord, I'll never go to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Jamaica. And God said, you're right. You know, reverse psychology did not work on the Lord for me.
So I tried. Oh my gosh. That is hilarious, Ben.
That is hilarious. Well, and you got, I mean, incredible family lineage though. I know you, you are a part of, of the Billy Graham family tree, right?
That's correct. And I think our mutual friend, um, Frank Sheldon, you know, he, he's probably also related somehow because he does the best Billy impersonation of anybody I know. Yes, he does.
Yes, he does. And for those who've never heard Frank do that, well, I have to get him back on the show and have him do that. He's incredible.
So yeah, he does many voices, but, uh, and man, but you wear many here, you're talking about going to Puerto Rico with your son playing baseball and, you know, even in the introduction, right. Actor, author, and I want to get to your newest book here as, as well. But before we, before we do that, so tell our listeners, I mean, a little bit about the pastoring experience and then let's, let's talk about Graham family films. I mean, you've, you've done some, I mean, wow. I mean, some incredible film projects pardoned by grace. I'm just looking here, fearless faith, a place in the heart, the challenging disaster. Remember, remember the goal, some, some incredible movies. Talk first though about, you know, this call to pastoring and, and where, where is that currently you pastoring a church currently and, and, or, or how's that, how's that look?
Yeah. So, so I, um, as I mentioned, I started preaching when I was 14 and then, um, you know, growing up, I wanted to be a police officer and then I wanted to be an actor and then I wanted to play in the NBA. And then when I was 16, I went to DC on a leadership training.
I was one of a hundred kids selected from around the country to go and we did leadership training and their, their point was teaching how to be involved in, you know, politically. And so after that, I learned you had to be 35 to run for president. So I did the math at 16 and said, in 2016, that's the first election I can run for president. So I signed everybody's book, Dr. Ben Graham, president 2016.
And I had Congress that we visited on that trip. Write me back, Dr. Graham, you got my vote in 2016 and you know, I want to do that. And, but God had called me ministry. And so I went into full-time ministry. Um, I started very young. I graduated high school early.
I graduated college early. Um, I, you know, became a youth pastor and my dad's church for a couple of years. And then at 21, I became a senior pastor in the state of New York. And so I, uh, I've been in full-time ministry 26 years and was a senior pastor for 23 of those years. And then in July of last year, we stepped down from the church that we had started here in the Nashville area. Um, we left Charlotte and pastoring just outside of Charlotte and South Carolina, came to Tennessee and then, uh, you know, started this ministry and we stepped down. One of the guys we ordained about 18 years ago, uh, became the senior pastor and we're still members there, still serving out of there. But, um, you know, God just allowed us to be involved ministry, you know, and I guess in our family, there's, you know, kind of an evangelistic heart. And so, you know, I've preached in all 50 States and over 40 countries and traveled and, you know, even as a pastor and was always engaged, but especially coming here, God kind of got me back into the filmmaking. Um, and what was neat is my brother called me last year and he's like, uh, he was in a graduation ceremony and he said, I use you in a, uh, in my sermon.
I'm thinking, Oh great. What story did you tell? You know, and, uh, I'm the oldest and you know, uh, my brother just under me, he's, he's telling this story. And then he talked about how as a pastor, I got to be a police chaplain and a reserve officer. And I went to the Academy and got to do that. And he talked about how I got to be in films and how my friend Derek Fisher played for the Lakers.
And I got to go warm up with the Lakers and shoot around with Kobe and Shaq and different things like that and get this really cool experience, you know, at many NBA games. And, and then he talked about how in 2016, when Trump became president, um, I got the opportunity to work on the faith team at the White House. And so for about two and a half years, almost every week, I was in DC and going to the White House and, you know, it tells all this and it just talked about how God gave me the desires of my heart. And so I, you know, we hang up the phone, I'm like, man, that's great. And next thing I know, it was, you know, probably a week later or middle of the night, I wake up in the middle of the night.
Now it like, it finally hit me. I was like, wow, I've never thought about this, but God has given me the desires of my heart. I just, you know, I never even thought about it in that capacity, but God's allowed me to do that. And then last year, you know, the Lord, uh, really began to, to, to reveal to me because when we came to Nashville, I had no desire to come to Nashville.
It's a wonderful city, but I had no desire. There was no reason for me to come and just knew God had called us. And about two weeks after we got here, my wife said, look, God may call you somewhere else, but just so you know, I'm not leaving Nashville. And she was of course saying that jokingly, but you know, that's how much we just fell in love with this place. But I knew God was doing something different before I passed through a large ministry, we had, you know, um, 65, 70 staff members in a big school and a printing ministry and all these things.
And we got here and God just always had us doing other things. Well, I back up when I was 11, I was in my first movie, uh, just a little part in a movie called Sling Blade. And, uh, just happened to be, they filmed in our hometown and that's why I was in the movie and it had Billy Bob Thornton in it.
And it was a, you know, just a Hollywood film. And then I did some theatrical stuff and we get here to Nashville and we get asked to be extras in a movie. And, and, uh, the, the next day, uh, or at the end of that day, they said, look, could you play a Catholic priest? I'm like, you know, bless you, my son. And I did the cross and they're like, yeah, yeah.

So they're like, we want you to have this role. They give me the script and this is my lines. And I'm like, wow, you know, and so then I get there the next day and they're like, you know, we got to thinking about it.
None of us are really Catholic on on the crew. You could just be a preacher. Could you do that? I was like, I think I can handle that, you know. And so, you know, I commit to be a preacher, of course. Then I got to think about it.
Man, I'm not believable as a preacher. What does that say about my day job? Right.
Right. You know, so I do this film. And a couple weeks later, the casting director calls and says, hey, would your family, your wife and your four boys be interested in doing a commercial?
I was like, what is it? She said First Tennessee Bank, it's one hundred fiftieth anniversary and they need a family. Sure. So we did that. And I mean, it just started snowballing into all these opportunities. And then God brought six filmmakers into our church.
And then my brothers and I, I have four brothers, four of the five of us are senior pastors. And we were like, you know, Billy did an amazing job with films. And some of these guys in my church who've been making faith based films for 20, 30 years have had huge impacts. And we're like, you know, we need to look at how we can do this. And, you know, we want to find our niche. But one of the things we want to do is just make good family films. You know, there's not enough Hollywood will do a family movie every once in a while, but they don't do them very often.
And yet every time they do them, they they make a lot of money off of them because they're such a desire form. And so we launched Graham Family Films and immediately Netflix and Voodoo, which is Wal-Mart's platform. And and several other platforms reached out and wanted to partner with us. You know, even though we were a brand new company, we had, I guess, some name recognition and they want to partner with us.
And we were like, well, you know, we're not even for sure exactly what we're getting ourselves into. You know, and so we just tried to slowly build it up. And and part of the thing that hindered us from maybe doing more or we were always limited was because, you know, I was running Graham Family Films and Pastor Church.
And then, you know, you know, for a couple of years involved in the White House doing this, that and the other. And so finally, you know, the Lord gave me that release last year to go, look, you know, it's time for you to, you know, to step down from pastoring, you know, and one of my prayers was always I want my ministry to be a little bit different than than my family. I'm thankful for my family heritage, but I want I don't want to live off their ministry.
I want to do something different. And so, you know, that's what God allowed me to do. And so, you know, I've been in 18 films as a producer, as an actor. And, you know, it's been awesome because, you know, one of the things that Hollywood is not a big fan of is allowing husband and wives to work together. And yet, you know, we've been able to do that.
And it's it's been awesome. And, you know, we we filmed a movie that came out in December called Christmas at Keystone, kind of a Hallmark movie. And a guy named Corbin Bernsen was in it. And Kevin Sarbo and my wife and I are the leads. And, you know, we had a blast. The director had to get on to me because at the end and I hate to give the end away, but, you know, it's a Hallmark film. We all happened. We kissed at the end and he had to get on because he said I over kissed.
Right. He said I was grossing him out. And Corbin Bernsen told our AD, he said, when I see Ben, the way he looks at Candace, which is my wife, he said, I see sex in his eyes. And I said, well, I was going for love.
But, you know, but I mean, how awesome to get to work with my wife in in doing these films. And, you know, so God has just allowed us to, you know, expand our ministry is what I say. And so I'm still preaching out a ton. I was just in Vegas last week. I was in Canada the week before. I was with you in Sevierville. I think right before that, you know, I'm still preaching out. We're still doing ministry, but we're also getting to do it in a different way.
Right. And I'll say this now and I'll be quiet. I know I've talked a while, but, you know, I was on the movie Taken 3. I was in several Hollywood films.
And what I found is when I was there on set, I would not say anything. My doctor's degree is in clinical counseling. I would not tell people on the counselor. I wouldn't even just go out and say, hey, I'm a preacher. But people would start asking me, you know, so how long you been in acting, whatever they get. We'd start talking. I'd say about being a preacher.
Next thing you know, these actors and actresses, some that you know, would say, hey, could I talk to you? And I became a counselor on the set. And so what God showed me was there's a great ministry here. And so it's been awesome to get to expand our ministry and how we're reaching people. No, it's incredible, Ben, because, you know, for our listeners out there, you know, a lot of people think when they hear the word ministry, you know, a lot of times they just kind of equate that to church.
Right. And you talk about pastoring. But several things come to mind. Boy, there's so much relatability between your story, my story. And, you know, you've been all 50 states. I've been to all 50 states. You've been to 40 countries.
I've been to 36 so far. So you got me beat there. Of course, I don't come anywhere close to the films and all of that that you've done. And we're going to talk about the book here in just a moment, your newest book, before we run out of time.
And just what a fascinating story. I mean, you said it. You said, you know, God has fulfilled the desires of your heart.
And I made a note, too, because I love this. If anyone ever said I married the farmer's daughter, you can literally say that, can't you? I married the farmer's daughter. That's correct.
Absolutely. I went deer hunting and I got me a deer. It was just a different kind. That's right.
D-E-A-R. That's right. It's funny because I went there and I told my dad, I was like, I'm here to hunt, nothing else. And then we get there on Friday. We all go out to eat. There was some other teenagers there, you know, or people our age.
And so Candace and I are sitting at the same table. Well, the next morning we go out and it's freezing cold there. And, you know, we go out to hunt and probably an hour into the hunt, I said, why am I out here?
I'm going back to the farmhouse, you know, to get to know to get to know Candace better. And so I went back in and my dad, you know, came out, you know, around 10 that afternoon, you know, when we were done to get me out of the stand and walk back. And when he comes over, he's like, there's deer literally standing there by my stand. And he's like, why has Ben not shooting?
And so he waits till they go off and he didn't want to shoot because he didn't want to shoot towards me. He goes, I walk up and you're not even in the stand. And he goes, I come back and he goes, where are you at? And I told him, I was like, well, dad, you know, I wanted to, you know, come back. And he goes, I thought I thought you were here just to hunt, you know, and I said, well, dad. And then I told him later that day, I was like, hey, Candace and her mom and sister are going to go to a nursing home to visit some people from their church that are shut in.
You care if I go. And he said, I thought you were here to hunt. And I said, well, dad, what's more important, hunting or somebody's soul?
We need to go minister to them. And he's like, yeah, I do. You know, I knew your hunting aspect was over after that. So I hear you. I hear you. That's right. He's like, I get it.
I get it. Well, and to that point, whether it's pursuing the heart of a woman or pursuing the soul of an individual, you are certainly making an impact in many, many, many different ways. And I'm just reminded of my buddy, Lex Luger, who goes and does all these, you know, comic cons and wrestle cons. And, you know, in his mind, Ben, that that's his ministry.
That's where he can reach out, you know, be salt and light among all those wrestling fans. Right. So absolutely. So, OK, well, I just was going to say real quick when I was passed as a pastor, one of the things that I love was our church was filled with people, business leaders, you know, professional musicians, actors, filmmakers, you know, and everything in between, you know, plumbers, whatever.
All of them understood Sunday was the pep rally and Monday through Saturday was the game. Right. And, you know, a lot of believers think Sunday, you know, I go and I do my thing for Lord and the rest of the week is my time.
But that's, you know, that's false. And so most people understand you. Every one of us have a ministry.
Right. You may not be a full time pastor or a missionary or evangelist or whatever, but we all have a ministry. And if we're all fulfilling our ministry, that's how we reach the world.
You know, it's one person at a time. But we don't do that by getting them to the church house. We do that by ministering to them where they're at, you know, and helping them come to know the Lord. And, you know, hopefully the end result is they understand that church family and all that. That's great.
You know, and so I think we've got to change the mentality of that a little bit. And I love that, Lex, and I know you're doing the same thing. You know, you're reaching people where you're at and where God leads you. And I think that's so important. Well, in St. Corinthians, chapter 5, verse 17 through 20, for those of you out there listening, go reference that and you'll see exactly what Ben's talking about.
One, being an ambassador for Christ and, you know, reconciling others just like you've been reconciled back to the Father, helping others be reconciled as well. Well, Ben, we've only got a couple minutes left. I mean, this time flies by. But ignorance and apathy, two deadliest, two of America's deadliest sins.
Take 60 seconds and tell us about your newest book and then how they can get it and how they can check out more about your films too. Yeah, absolutely. So you can go to pastorbengram.org and you can check that out. I just, I'm reminded that, you know, the Bible says God's people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. And, you know, we're living a day and time where most people don't know about the founding of our nation. They don't know about our, you know, pastors in the beginning of the nation. You know, Connecticut's Constitution was written by a pastor. It was many of the pastors that engaged in fighting for our freedom. And so we talk about how we were a Judeo-Christian nation. We were founded upon Judeo-Christian values. And even our education in the beginning taught Judeo-Christian principles, and we've been removed from that.
And so we talk about that. And it's not the world that acts like the world that is a threat to our nation. It's that God's people, people that claim to be Christians, are acting like the world and not understanding the importance of being knowledgeable about the truth and then being engaged. You know, and the attitude is if we just bury our heads in the sands, it'll go away, and that's just not going to work. So there's a lot more I could say about it, but that's what we deal with in this book about how we've become where we're at today and how we fix it, how we, you know, remedy the problem.
We've got to get knowledgeable about what's going on and reengage as Christians, as believers in our society so that we can have a bigger influence and change what is going on in society. Well, and I think that's great because I'm challenging people all the time. I mean, you bring me all these problems, and okay, I'm okay. How about, okay, let's work on a solution. It sounds like your book, and the title is Ignorance and Apathy? That's correct. Ignorance and Apathy, Two of America's Deadliest Sins.
Of course, we all know about the seven deadly sins that Scripture talks about, but I think these two go along with those as being a real indictment about where we're at as a nation today, as most people just don't know and they just don't care. So pick up a copy of Ben's book and get the solution. We talk about it all day long. Okay, what's the solution? Well, how can we turn this thing around, you know, steer this ship in a different direction? And so Ben Graham, man, what an amazing story you have. I think we could do two or three other shows. Maybe I can convince you to come back one day and we'll get an update. Oh, absolutely.
We'll get an update on everything. So pastorbengram.org, right, is one of your websites? Well, it's actually pastorbengram.com or.org.
Either one of them will get you there. And you can find a copy of my book and also our latest films and all of that is on there as well. And we have another way, grahamfamilyfilms.com as well, right, that can take you directly to a lot of the films you've been a part of? That's correct. Yes, sir.
And most of our projects are on places like Prime and that, but you can go to grahamfamilyfilms.com and you can find a list of all the films that we've been a part of. Ben Graham, pastor, actor, author, he has his own podcast, we didn't even talk about that. You have your own podcast, correct?
That's correct. Yes, sir. It's called Real Talk with Pastor Ben Graham. Real Talk with Pastor Ben Graham. Father, husband, and if you haven't picked up on anything else, this man loves God. And talk about, hey, no pressure, Ben, coming from the part of the Billy Graham family tree, no pressure there at all, right?
No pressure. You know what, people ask all the time about family things and stuff, but the end of the day, I think the thing that is important is I'm thankful somebody generations ago decided they wanted to try to pass on the things of God to their family. And that's the most important thing I can do is just keep passing that on to my children and my grandchildren. But you know, all of us are just simply sinners saved by the grace of God. And so really the most important thing is that we can say that we're a child of God. And so anybody listening, man, if you're unsure of that, the greatest thing you can do is give your life to Christ because there's no greater family to be a part of than the family of God. And Jesus said it so clear, the only way to get to God is through him. And so he said he's the way, the truth, and the life. And so I remind people that's the most important family tree you can be a part of is the family of God.
That's it. We'll end on that note. Ben Graham, thank you for being a part of the Man Up show. And each and every week I challenge you to go out and just live a God-filled, God-blessed day, take up Ben's challenge, take up my challenge.
