In this episode of Q&A with Koloff, Nikita Koloff welcomes entrepreneur and longtime businessman Don Baker to the studio for a powerful conversation about business, faith, health, family, and personal growth. Don shares lessons from building multiple businesses, navigating adversity, and learning to recognize opportunities instead of simply talking about them. He also opens up about deeply personal experiences involving his family's health and the lessons those experiences taught him about being proactive and taking responsibility for his own well-being. The conversation then turns toward faith and the importance of investing in yourself. Don reflects on his experience at Man Camp and asks Nikita why more men don't take advantage of opportunities designed to help them grow spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Nikita also shares about his journey of faith, raising four daughters, and now investing in his 15 grandchildren—including the importance of prayer, presence, and meaningful time together in an increasingly distracted world. From business and health to wisdom, family, technology, and walking with God, this episode is a reminder that you can always get better—and it's never too late to start.

Nikita Koloff

This is the Truth Network. Satan's Nightmare, Nakia Koloff. This is one war that Needs to be settled. What a bro, what a fight. And it's out of control here.

That's a bad man. No, that's a bad man. No, that's a bad man. Anytime, any place, night, day, I don't care. I'm only a phone call away, my friend.

Welcome to another episode of QA with Koloff, the Devil's Nightmare. Welcome back, QA with Koloff, questions and answers, where you get to ask me, the Russian nightmare, any question that's burning that you always wanted to know. It can be about wrestling, it can be about ministry, it can be about life in general. And I'm excited to have in studio with me today, Don Baker. Don, welcome to QA with Koloff.

Thank you, Nikita. You know, this is quite the experience, and I'm enjoying our time.

Well, and it's always refreshing for me to have someone to interview because a lot of times someone will submit a request and then I will call them at their location and be able to have a conversation with them over the phone. But you have come in from, where do you call home?

Okay, my home is in Clover, South Carolina, a little southwest of Charlotte. And it was a good two-hour ride coming up here and I had plenty of time to think about What's going on here and have a nice visit with Nikita because I like face-to-face. Yes. I do as well. I mean, you know, just that eye interaction and facial expressions and all of that, right?

So much more meaningful.

Well, So, and I do appreciate you coming in. And, you know, we talked, of course, we did a lengthier interview over on It's Time to Man Up.

So, folks, if you want to get more of Don's backstory, you're going to be fascinated by his story. I want to encourage you to go over to that show, into the archives, and make sure you listen to Don's full story. Today, we're just going to kind of skim the surface on some things. He's an entrepreneur. You've had multiple businesses over the years, successful businesses.

How many total, Don? Eight. Eight different businesses ranging everything from construction to pool building, what all have you been involved in? One of the best ways to run a business is vertical.

So my dad started building pools, then he started a company or I bought a company that built equipment. Then I built another construction company, a plaster company and then a chemical company. They're all lined up together.

So it's vertical.

So you can be competitive, you can control your equipment and your subs. And so that's what I did. And, you know, two oh eight kind of crushed a couple of them. And then I merged a few back together and at present I've got three and they're all employee owned. Because I wouldn't sell to the big boys.

Wow.

Okay. And I sold to my company and I maintained as the bank so the banks wouldn't shut us down. Because when you don't pay the bank, they take your stuff. If they don't pay me, I don't worry about it. There you go.

Yeah, it's like somebody says, Yeah, you know, they call themselves a homeowner. I'm like, miss a couple of three mortgage payments. Let me know how that works for you. Yeah, well, uh. It's definitely a busy time, but it wasn't as though I was pursuing them.

But The circumstances of life. My dad died. I had to roll into there. And then I had some epiphanies and I had to dream up ways to save the biz because if you're not growing, you're dying. You gotta be thinking.

You gotta be planning. and I'm one where if I find an opportunity I what? I don't talk about it, I just deal with it. Do it. Take advantage of it and do it.

Absolutely. Yeah, and so you really have a fantastic story. And on that note, I like what you said to you. What popped in my head as you were talking is a book I read a number of years ago called Cash Flow Quadrant. By a guy by the name of Robert Kiyosaki.

I don't know if you've ever. Heard of that name. He also wrote his more famous book, I might say, is called Rich Dad. Poor dad. By Kiyosaki.

But Cashflow Quadrant, your story kind of reminds me of that: how you built one business kind of on top of another, on top of another. And so, well, let's shift gears for a minute. You get something completely off topic, so to speak, because this is important to me, and I appreciate you giving me this resource. Health in your pocket. And so we all know that health is invaluable, right?

And no matter how much wealth you might build, if you don't have your health, it really is null and void in a sense, right? Yeah, you know, uh It's funny because in my businesses I'm all about health. My wife, I had to deal with some cancer issues with her. My son, congestive heart disease, I had to deal with that. And I had to learn to be looking out and not relying entirely on practicing physicians.

You hear that word, practicing? Yeah, it's key word. They they don't have all the answers.

So at any rate, I was in Vistage CEO training and I ran into this Dr. Benz. about seventy five years old, interesting fella on health. And when I met him, I went right to him and I said, hey, we'll do something together.

So I connected with him and uh communicated and he gave me this little book called Health in your pocket. Your pocket guide to good health. Yeah. And literally, it's not, it's about. What I would call green coat medicine, where you take control of your own health and don't put your life in someone else's hands because when it doesn't work, he just rolls them, and I did my best.

So when you don't understand how you can deal with your own health, And have some knowledge, and you rely on folks that don't have the answers, they can't play God, and they try. They do. I mean, they do obviously the best of their ability based on their level of education, but at the end of the day, I have found anyway, no matter what their diagnosis is, and they're basing it on. Past experience, of course, and studies and all of that. But at the end of the day, would you agree, Don, that the one who really has total control is the creator of the universe, the one who created you and I, knew us before we were ever in our mama's womb.

At the end of the day, he's the great physician and the great healer. He has the final say, would you agree? He does, and quite frankly, I'm a questioner. And I got worried one little short story. My son my wife We found out she had cancer after 15 years when she had her son, and the seizures and stuff started coming on.

And he was born And he looked pretty good, nine on the APCAR. And he had two little hernia buttons. And they said they'll fix them later.

So they said, well, we'll uh Don't worry about it. It's like crashing an airplane. When that happened, it struck my heart. I was like, oh boy. three weeks later, at the middle of the night, one in the morning, of Sunday night.

There's a thumb sticking out of this boy's gut. Mm.

Okay. And so my wife was too weak. left her home. Go to the doctor, Dr. Morton.

3 o'clock in the morning comes out three hours later, so we got a sick boy. I said, I didn't give you a sick boy. What's up?

Well, we don't know. Mm-hmm. and he had to stop.

So what happened? They checked his oxygen. seventy eight. He hydrated them rather than inspect it because 78 is low. And but that was his normal because he had a heart issue.

Three days they stuck tubes in him and needled him. Nobody knew what's up till the nurse said, guess what? This kid's got a heart murmur. Young Buck comes in and starts singing the death speech to me and my mother and my wife. He started and I said, out of here.

grabbed him by the collar, said, Do you know what's going on here? No. I said, I don't want to see you again.

Okay. And uh The the principal, Michael uh Dr. Donald Riopel, little short fellow. Sanger Clinic, Charlotte. talked to me, said, I know what this is.

We don't have the answers, but we'll find it.

So, I was lucky enough to have the only guy in the world who could do it.

So, now it's all over the world, and my son was saved. But again, They like to tell you things, and I'm not a statistic. We have God on our side. If we believe and I wear a little band that says Everything is possible for one who believes. Right.

How did my wife live 18 years with glioblastoma brain cancer? How did I have a son? But God. But God. But God.

And you know, when it comes to our health, what I reminded of, Don, obviously, there's no promises of tomorrow, there's no guarantees.

However, I believe, you know, God giving us a brain and the ability to. Not take charge, but to make wise decisions, right, when it comes to our health and our wellness. Obviously, we know we can put some very harmful things in our body. We can put some more beneficial things in our body. And what this pocket guide does, and I know you and I are going to work together on seeing how we can distribute some of these, especially to our guys at Mancamp specifically.

We're probably going to start there with those guys. But, you know, introduction to health factoids, personal strategies for good health, maintaining good health, strategies at work, natural remedies for common illnesses, diseases, all contained here in the Health in Your Pocket Guide. Take the last minute or two and just, well, why is people's health important to them? Why would they want a resource like this? What I would tell you it's almost like a farmer's almanac.

To grow your body. Every issue you got, you can find a supplement that'll help you through. It doesn't say don't do the white coat, but do. Take your health and your control and And less than 5% of the education or less in doctors is on preventative. They're all symptom treatment.

Treatment. Treatment. And you want to do this. And Dr. Benz, it isn't just about the vitamins.

It gives you the history of our food. And would you rather be minimum daily requirement or optimum? I'm about optimum. And I'm 57 years. Excuse me, I'm a 1957 model, so me and Nikita got something else in common.

We're pretty close. We're 1950s, babies. Come on. But Dr. Benz and I had a relationship for seven years.

I talked to him every Sunday. And when COVID came up, he predicted all the bad stuff that was happening. We did a seminar with 80 people. And thirty-three of my relatives, I told them about it, three didn't when got the shot. They all got microcardia.

And everyone else was able to manage it. But this book here will let you take control of your health. You want to be active, inactive, or you want to be proactive. I'm proactive. And every day I work out and eat right, I figure I get two on the back end.

So I'm going to hang around with Nikita. Come on. Active, inactive, or proactive. That's right. I like that.

Let me say it again: active, inactive, or proactive. Yeah, I'm a big believer down in this old adage: an ounce of prevention. Is better than a pound of cure. And so I've been one for 55 years who believed in supplementation. In fact, always do my homework and my research.

If this is of interest to you, Don and I are going to work together. We're going to figure out how to get my hands on more of these health in your pocket where you can educate yourself and take better control of your future. If you want more information, On some health and wellness, go to koloff.info. That's just the last name Koloff, K-O-L-O-F-F dot info. And you can get more of a deep dive into nutrition, health and wellness, that sort of thing.

And you can reach me right through that website as well and get you on the right track if you're not on the right track or introduce you to something that maybe is better than what you're already consuming.

So check that out.

Well, Don, thank you for that. It is the QA with Koloff. And so, while we have time, I want to give you the time to ask me a question or two and just. Let's just see where this goes here. What's your first question for me?

Well, you know, I was wondering why I was here, but it's clear that we are connected. And we're like spirits. Yes, sir. It was interesting down I attended the man camp and it was pretty exciting to me and My question is, why don't more people take advantage of the opportunity you share with them? As far as specifically the camp itself?

That's correct.

Okay. Yeah, it's a great question. And there's one that leaves me scratching my head sometimes because You know, I get all kinds of answers like, Oh, I don't have the time to go. Or Ah, I'm good, I'm good. Like me me and God were good.

You know, and it's like the wife who who was encouraging her husband to come and he's like, Honey, I'm good to which she responded, Don, this is a true story, but you can't get better. Ouch, which is the reason last year he was at Man Camp because of that question. Whether it's spiritually speaking, mentally, emotionally, physically, I mean, there's not an area of our life I think you would agree that we can't improve upon. And so at man camp, the focus is not just one area. But all those areas, spirit, soul, and body, and helping a man get better equipped.

Give him more tools for his toolbox. Send him back home to be that godly man, godly husband, godly father, or godly grandfather, because we've had a lot of grandfathers now at the camp, as old as 81 years old. Uh and uh i and so, yeah, it's it's a head scratcher 'cause I mean, they'll give me every excuse on the on the planet, Don. You know, and yet I'll turn around and go, Oh, but but you can find a week to go hunt Bambi. You can find a week.

You're a fisherman, right? Oh, you can find a week to go deep-sea fishing off the coast, but you can't find a few days. and dedicate them back to God who created you. And just put put all distractions aside and really just run after his heart or connect with him at a deeper level. Man, it's challenging with men.

It really is. Serious, it's a head scratcher. Yeah, well, it kind of reminds me of some things that I've done. where We have a system on indoor swimming pools that eliminates the burning eyes. the sore lungs, the burning skin, and you'd say it's a no-brainer.

Right. But the only time people come to it is when There's a lawyer involved. Or a parent that was a lawyer. and force the issue. It's kind of like when you're sick.

You don't do the preventative, but you're all about fixing it once it's broke. And it's a no-brainer. For what I've got, and I feel blessed because if you do the math on how many people have been. Told about this system and they're not willing to go, I'm blessed. And let me tell you, for uh five hundred bucks for a week, They're investing way more than that.

And then we've got, you know, one man supporting and serving every man that's there. And you think about the time, the investment that people are making. but for me it was priceless. That's awesome. And, you know, In relation to that, just did the last, say, six months.

I'll speak at a men's dinner. A man up dinner. And we'll have anywhere from Uh 150, two hundred guys at this dinner. or I do a man-up conference and twenty-five, forty, sixty, eighty men will come. a breakfast, right?

So I do all these different events And Don, to your point, I've introduced Man Camp to the To not just hundreds, but thousands of men. And yet You are now part of a very small Brotherhood of men Just hundreds out of the thousands. thousands that I've introduced this to. You just happened to be one who said yes, were many of those other men. Said no.

Yeah. Well, you know, you always used to heard the thing, Mikey will eat anything. Yeah. No, TV commercial. I did that commercial in junior high school, by the way.

Give it to Mikey. He'll eat anything. For the elderly out there, a major myself. Anyway, yes, I've heard that expression.

Well. What it comes down to me is Oh. I'm a little different. As we all are, but yes. Uh I learn from folks sharing.

I learn from folks doing silly things. I lost three brothers doing stupid things, and the last thing I would do, I'd walk around that pit of fire they walked through four times and didn't figure they'd get burned. I just walked around it. And, you know. What amazed me was The Proverbs In the Old Testament.

They literally show you how to live life on life's terms.

Solomon was the wisest man in the world, and I just. I'm learning now, but I just don't know how different my life would have been if I'd been trained, because I wasn't from a Christian background. I'm a late bloomer. But let me tell you, I got another book I read. Uh The Power of the Subconscious by Dr.

Joseph Murphy. And in there, some of the most Striking Developments were done by folks between the age of 65 and 95. And why is that? In my mind, Why would you think that would be the case, Nikita? I guess just l life experiences and things you learned along the way that you can then turn around and apply and become successful.

Well the other is When you finally decide to quit making a buck and building your family, and that's a problem, in my point in life, I don't know what I'm going to do next. But I can tell you, I've done some things that gave me resources. To give back. And the group that Nikita was sitting with, or you know, they're 80 years old, man. I went there for what?

Wisdom. And that wisdom serves me well, and now it's my job to share. And I love the statement I heard down in Mand Camp. you should pass on wisdom not necessarily just wealth. Yeah, yeah, we talk about that, right?

When God asked Solomon, hey, what do you want? Basically, blank check, he said, give me wisdom to rule over these people. And because he didn't ask for, you know, the death of his enemies or long life or riches and fame and fortune, God blessed him with all of that anyway as he looked at his heart and he acquired that.

So, well, we got time for one more question if you've got one more for me.

Well Uh How's it feel to be a grandad? And then train your kids the way you would have liked to had it done for you. Yeah, and which we have that in common as well. You say, you didn't grow up in a Christian home. You phrase it and said, I'm a late bloomer.

That is true for me as well. I did not grow up in a Christian home. And in a sense, I was a late bloomer coming to faith in 17 October 1993. At the age of 34, I surrendered my life to Jesus. And then, to the best of my ability, I raised four girls and just sewed into them what I felt was the right decisions at the time, hoping and knowing that one day they'd have to make their own decision when it came to their faith.

I couldn't just ride on the coattails of dad, right? And so I'm fortunate to have four girls in a pretty rock solid place and now 15 grandchildren later, Don, 15, I have the opportunity to be able to like sometimes drive them to school. And on the way, we're engaged in little conversations. And then, maybe a couple minutes before we get there, I'm like, hey, kiddos, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Grandpa's just going to say a quick prayer for you.

And so I just cover them, you know. Cover them in prayer, their school, their studies, the headmaster, their teachers, protection over there, whatever God puts on my heart, right? Or, or they run and scrape their knee out in the yard or out in the driveway, and I'll go, Come here, come here, come here, come here. Hey, let Grandpa pray for that right now, you know. And so, just trying to model for them what it looks like, you know, just to be Jesus with skin on and to really just care, like as Jesus modeled, He cared for people, He had compassion on people for people, on people.

And so, that's what I'm to the best of my ability. Trying to model.

Now, we've heard some joke and say, man, if I knew grandkids were this great, I would have just bypassed the kids themselves. Of course, that's not. Not possible to do, but the grandkids as I know your grandpa, man, they're amazing, aren't they? Yeah, well, the interesting part about that. I'm a quick study and I do things immediately.

I take action.

So I could have gone down to the hunt club on Sunday, but I didn't. I went to church with my daughter who plays. And then on top of that, I went to breakfast with him. and the grandson's playin' with a little game, and I turned it down sideways And I got a little eight year old and a ten year and uh about a ten year old. And we started drawing cartoons or animals and figures figures on there and they started to interact with me and it was so amazing because you get so busy.

The last one I got with is I got a niece that was about five, and I asked my wife, I said, geez, every time I look at her, she looks like she's afraid of me. You have to put your business down and smile.

So I smiled at her, and I can't get her off of me now every time I see her. How about that? Here's so quick, quick side story on that. out to dinner recently. and looked like a dad and a son, sat down.

For dinner. Don? from the time they sat down, with the exception of looking at the menu to order, Both of them were on their phones the entire Time. And I don't know if they said four words between each other other other than when they were making their placing their order with the waitress. And it just struck me, I'm like, man, the world in which we live how technology in a way has been good, but at the same time, how it is just Seems to have ruined too many relationships, right?

And I know my daughters, like, they like they really limit the The iPads and the television, you know, they limit it. They have boundaries and limitations on how much they can. Can watch things because they're all smaller, so they don't have cell phones or anything like that. But But man, what a difference it makes when you just spend quality time with whether it's your children or your grandchildren, right? You know, it it's a task for me because I call the phone a binky.

You have to be intentional with it, right?

So I went out with the wife, and what did I do this week? And I left the phone at home, man. Good. Good for you. We both did.

And that came from. Seven days cold turkey. I'll be quite frank with you. I didn't miss it a bit, and I was grateful. That's how you so many men will say, you know, we're so attached to our phone.

And when we say, hey, put it in your car, set it aside. You're not going to look at first, some guys are very resistant to that, but at the end of the camp, so many of them go. Wow, like what you just attested to They go Wow, that was really amazing, really refreshing.

So, well, I can't thank Don, can't thank you, Don, enough to be in the studio. Don Baker in the studio with me. Again, be sure to go over to It's Time to Man Up and hear his full story.
