You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. This is the United States Champion. My first floor. Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is set for one fall. Introducing first from Lithuania, he weighs 123 kilos, the Russian nightmare, the Kita.

Cool.

Now the devil's nightmare. Welcome back to another episode of It's Time to Man Up. Men in Uniform, men and women in uniform are a special treat for me because anytime someone serves our nation, serves our country, they have a special place in my heart.

So don't go anywhere today. You stay right here because with me today is a former Navy man, Pat Scully. Pat, welcome to the Man Up Show. Yes, it's great to be here. Thanks for having me on.

Well, it's great to have you with us. And man, lots to talk to you about. Certainly want to talk to you about your career. A 24-year active duty, right? 24 years in the Navy.

Yeah, yep. I had to move out high-year tenure. I couldn't stay in any longer.

Now we don't. I hear you. I hear you. Now we don't have the military in common, but believe it or not, you know, it's kind of looking at your bio, we do have something in common connected to that. I bet you couldn't in a million years guess what it is.

Well, as a matter of fact, um as I've been following you, we have quite a bit in common.

Well, we do. We do. And of course, wrestling, we're going to talk about that Magnum TA. There's something in common there that we're going to talk about. But let me just kind of enlighten you and all of our listeners.

The country of Kuwait. I see where, because I know you traveled all over the world in your military days and obviously a 24-year career. You went lots of different places. You came out as a chief petty officer, is that right? Yes, yes.

A very huge accomplishment for an enlisted sailor. I I I would I would imagine uh well take take a minute, we'll get to the Kuwait in just a minute, but uh explain that for our listeners. L like uh so you went in as enlisted, does it take what's it take to to reach Chief Petty Officer?

Well, um, so I uh joined the Navy in 1984. And uh we had high numbers of uh enlisted and in my rate. There wasn't a lot of people making rank So it took me, I think, eighteen years to make chief. I was stuck at uh one pay grade for probably eight years.

Okay.

So 1984, we just had something else in common there. Of course, that's the year I broke into pro wrestling in 1984. You went into the military? Yeah, you went into the military. I went into the pro wrestling world.

There you go.

Now, on that note, so we'll keep our listeners no longer in suspense. They're like, well, what's the Kuwait connection there?

Now, did you know that in the mid-80s that I had a 10-day tour of my own, not in the military, but in Kuwait in wrestling? We did a wrestling 10-day tour in Kuwait. Did you know that?

Well, as a matter of fact, I do because I just got done finishing your audible Nikita Tale of Ring of Redemption. And I recall You uh did some time over there and um I think that's where you met some Russian embassy people. Yeah.

So here's the quick, funny story, which, by the way, thank you for the audible book was fun to do. I actually did it right here at the very studio I'm sitting in today. And for people to download that, they can go on Amazon and different places that you can go get the audio book in my own voice, right? Did you appreciate it being in my own voice and telling the story? I certainly could not keep it off.

I was listening to it.

Sometimes I'd rewind it just to kind of hear it again, and it was very comforting to hear it in your voice. It was a great experience. No, I appreciate that because it's important to me. I joke with people like when I'm out speaking and stuff, I usually have hard copies with me, and I'm like, hey, oh, by the way, if you just do not like to read, there is an audible version now. I go, but you can't get that one signed.

You can get the hard copy today signed, but you can't get the audible book signed.

So, so I do have the book and it's signed, but one of my faults in life is I'm not a great reader. You know what? I can identify with that. Really honestly, up to about 25 years ago, I just set my mind, right, mindset that I was going to become an avid reader and learn the expression that leaders are readers. And so I just had to discipline myself and apply myself to do that.

And I try to do average about a book a month, if not more, sometimes. But all right, let me get back to Kuwait, though, because I think you'll appreciate the story.

So, yeah, we did a 10-day trip over there and And little did I know that I would.

Now, I didn't meet the ambassador from Russia, but he heard I was coming, wanted to know who I was, and the promoter had to tell him that it was just a character I was portraying. And at first, he was not happy that I was impersonating a Russian.

However, on opening night of the matches, they come down and they go, Hey, just want to let you know the ambassador and his wife are in the stands. I'm like, Oh, dear Lord.

Okay.

And all that to say, I think my first match was against Sergeant Slaughter. Pat, I went out and the people cheered me and they booed Sergeant Slaughter. And I'm like, I had never been a good guy before. I know. And I'm like, I've never been a good guy before.

What do I do? And Sergeant's like, I'll walk you through the whole thing, kid. Just pay attention and listen to me. And I'm like, okay. And got my hand raised.

The ambassador went home happy.

So. That is awesome. That's a great story. Yeah, it's crazy. But so, so.

You're originally a New York guy, born and raised up in New York, right up near the Canadian border, right? Right on the St. Lawrence River. St. Lawrence River, right on the Canadian border.

And of course, I know from my dear partner who you have met and spent time with now, Lex Luger, who was born up in Buffalo, New York, a lot of Catholics up that way. And of course, you were raised Catholic, right? Yeah, my father's descent is Irish, so father Catholics up in northern New York and whatnot, yeah. Irish Catholic, yeah, okay. Yeah, that's that's my best Irish imitation.

I probably didn't do too well, but uh, anyway, so so well, what's interesting, though, is when you met Natasha, now that's a good Russian name, Pat. It is. Thankful for her dad. to um re uh find that name from uh What is it? Uh Bo Winkle and um What what is that one real thick book about I forget what book it is, but that's where he got that name from.

Okay, so he got it out of a book, so he got Natasha out so it has nothing to like me, so she has nothing to do with Russia? Nope. Her dad's pretty much of British ancestors.

Well, British, you said? Yeah.

Yeah, we have more and more in common. My mom was born in England as well, up on the Scottish border. And so, all right.

So, well, you met Natasha and you were. In a season of your life, now you're out of the military, I'm guessing at this point, in a season of your life where you're looking at getting back in church. And of course, you were thinking about a Catholic church, and she's thinking about a non-denominational church. And I love how you say you, you kind of latched on to her faith and latched onto that, had a lot of questions, but within just a couple years there, you guys got married, you accepted the Lord and was baptized. And man, things took off from there, right?

Yeah, I did. Actually, I met her through a friend and they hooked us up. And she was coming off. relationship. I was coming off a relationship We both wanted that beautiful house with a white picket fence with the For the caravan uh vehicle and all that stuff.

And actually, I was still in the military And when I was dating her, I made the rank of E6. And we got married and then um I was uh saved and reborn, baptized. And that's, and I made chief.

So it's like, you know, thank the Lord, a lot of things happen, good and bad. A lot of challenges, uh, when you turn your heart to the Lord. It's It's not an easy thing. It's, you know, it's challenging and you just gotta. uh continue to read and uh believe.

You you you do and uh you know you bring l so how when that ha when all that happened, you were how old? Oh, I guess I was probably uh Uh thirty four ish.

Okay.

Okay.

So, oh, Pat, this is almost like a setup or something because I was 34. It is when you look back to it. I told you, we have a lot in common. We do. Two different worlds.

I was 34 when I gave my life to Christ, you know, so we do have a lot in common, more than I even realize. That's pretty amazing.

Now, you brought up a valid point for all of our listeners, you know, and that is, and I say from time to time, and, you know, depending on the audience or who I'm talking to, that, you know, living for Christ is not a bed of, you know, it's not a primrose path, right? It's not a bed of roses. I mean, you know, I'm reminded of scriptures where he said, hey, they hated me. They're going to hate you. You're going to, in this world, you're going to have tribulation, right?

It's just, it's not easy, but it's worth it, though, right, Pat? Yes, I believe it is. As much as we falter and fall, we read some scripture and pray to the Lord and we just dust ourselves off and get covered covered in his blood and go back at it again. And keep moving forward. And I know you said between your faith and your belief and hard work, that's what's really really kept it all together for you, right?

Yes, yes, yes, um.

So, what are you so you're no longer in New York? I know that for certain because you and I met at a conference there in Virginia and actually in near Magnum. In fact, it might have been in Magnum's hometown. I don't recall at least near there. Yeah, I live in Chesapeake and the the church kingdom life Where um Pastor Wayne's at that's in Chesapeake, also.

My daughter goes there. Matter of fact, um, Yeah, so um Magnums from Chesapeake. As a matter of fact, I think he owns some land out here with some big. Antennas on it. I don't know if he still does, but the uh yes, Magnum the Magnum stories.

Pretty unique. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Okay.

God bless you for making a difference around the world. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Magnum Towers. And so for those who don't know and or maybe they're not familiar with Magnum TA, of course, let's just quickly tell you he was my kind of my arch nemesis in the pro wrestling world. And we kind of set the wrestling world on fire when we did a first ever, anything like this of its kind, a best of seven series, kind of a world series of wrestling, if you will, for the U.S.

heavyweight championship belt, who then became the number one contender to Ric Flair's heavyweight championship. And Magnum was a whole long story there, but that's where you just either get the Audible book and download it or get a hard copy, you know, from me, a signed copy from my website. But that said, you know, we did a whole story there where he was stripped of the title, just kind of condense it down. And so the belt's up, up, you know, up for grabs. And we did this best of seven series.

And of course, it was historical. In terms of never been done before, and people still talk about it today. And what's interesting is. Magnum. I I know when I was up there, you you had handed me a a a a booklet with that highlighted uh Terry Allen Magnum TA in his wrestl his amateur wrestling career, right?

Yeah, yeah.

So I'm a wrestling coach. I'm an active wrestling coach for Norfolk Christian. And Terry, back in nineteen ninety seven, He wrestled at a private school Norfolk Collegiate. And this is in the independent schools, the Virginia Independent. Athletic Association and he was a Champion in 1977 at 167 pounds.

Nineteen says so he and he and I graduated together or same year, nineteen seventy seven. And so yeah, he was a champion. I know uh uh uh he was quite the amateur wrestler to say the least.

Now how long how long, Pat, have you been coaching wrestling? Probably Well over 13 years now. 12 or 13 years. What what got you into coaching wrestling?

Well, my son, we transferred from public school to the private school there at Norfolk Christian. and my son entered sixth grade of middle school And he came home in October and he said, I'm going to join the wrestling team. And my jaw just dropped, and I teared up. And it's like, because I never pushed it on them, right? I don't push.

sports on the kids. And um, so um, I was kind of you know, that helpful behind the scenes dad and eventually I became an assistant coach and then I was a head coach and And and Nate my son Nate, he's twenty four now, He uh he he was a stud. He was a good wrestler. He got his hundred wins, which is a. remarkable task for high school wrestlers to get one hundred wins Um, so yeah, I just stuck with it and uh And I'm still with it.

I'm seeing these kids come through and, you know, sharing their dreams and using the word and. I I often use Jacob's story. With the kids and the wrestling with God, right? Wrestling with the angels. Yes, yes, yes.

But I go back to when Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac. Yeah.

And I use that as, you know, there's no favoritism here. I don't care if your son's the best. all star wrestler, whatever, there's no favoritism here.

So that's a good example of favoritism. Yeah, for real. I mean, yeah, and it and uh of course I you know, having four girls uh of my own, you know, my some of them joke from time, Dad, I am your favorite, right? And I'm like, I love you all equally. They're like, Yeah, whatever, Dad.

I know I'm your favorite. I'm like, stop, just stop that, right? And of course, the baby of the family, my youngest one, Colby, she usually hits me the most with that because she goes, you know, I am the baby of the family. And then, of course, the oldest one, Pat, will always say, Yeah, you spoiled her a lot more than you did me. And I'm like, oh, come on, come on.

Oh, absolutely. Our youngest daughter, she's the queen.

Well, there you go.

So, well, let me ask you this.

So, we meet in the fall of 2024 there at the men's conference, the man-up men's conference I'm doing up there at the church. And we really did connect. And, of course, you were introduced to the man camp that Lex Luger and I do every spring and every fall. And you're like, Man, I need to come to that. I'm coming to that.

And you came and take a minute or two and share with our listeners just the impact. I know you. Said it was eye-opening, it was epic and life-changing. Explain that, Pat.

So yes, so when I met you and you were talking about this main camp and You know, I was kind of at a crossroads. I needed to pick me up. And this man camp, uh Just kinda Hit me, and it's like, I need to go to that. You know, I need to get away, and I need to refocus. Re-energize and strengthen my relationship with the Lord.

Let me tell you something. It was epic. It was Epic. I can't. There's so much, you know, there's so much that we do.

we can't say too much. And it's like I'm talking to men at my church and I think I may have one that goes in in the next round. And you know, the the the you know, your caption of spirit, soul, and body. Hits it dead on a bullseye. I mean, you hit all them parts and just.

Just to be there. And you know, and and God. God God picked these men. to be there for my camp. And there there's no possible way that I believe that Just by coincidence, these guys.

Show up. I mean, we had one we had a we had a retired marine there.

So you we had the military connection there and You know, we had a pastor there and it's just so many different people. And we all take our hats off when we walk in there. We're just We're just Seekers of God. Yeah.

Yeah.

Your profession doesn't matter at that point, right? In fact, we try to emphasize that. You know, we're not all that interested, really interested in what you do. We're just more interested that you're here to run after the heart of God. And you're right.

It is a very, I mean, everyone from 18-year-olds to 73, I think, has been the oldest so far, still hungry for God. Our hope is that men come hungry and thirsty or like yourself, looking for more, wanted to recharge or maybe reconnect, or in some cases, connect for the very first time. You know, we've had guys on this last camp. We had an 18-year-old who surrendered his life to the Lord. We had a 65-year-old, Pat, that had been in church his whole life.

But in that setting, in the camp setting, getting away from all of life's distractions, the Lord revealed to him you're religious, but you have no relationship. The story has never made. The 18-inch trip from your head down to your heart. And so, while at camp, while out on a devotional time, just on his own. The Lord revealed that to him, and it was life-changing for him.

And that's pretty amazing. And you know, for our listeners, let me emphasize something as well. Maybe the ladies out there have a special man in their life, and they're like, man, this camp sounds really interesting. I'd like to just encourage that special man in your life to go. Don't pressure them or push them, but just give them your blessing and encourage them.

And the reason you don't hear a lot about it, or you hear Pat saying, you know, we don't, I don't, you know. Share every kind of detail to it is because it's a different, would you say, Pat? A different experience for every single guy, right? No matter what your background, your walk of life is, it's still different for every guy, right? It is 100%.

And that's exactly what it is, Nikita. It's an experience. It's not a conference. It's not, you know, you're sitting around and reading books and well, we're reading reading books. But it's like it's an experience and you're going to Feel the hand of the Lord on you, no matter where you are in life, no matter what age you are.

Yeah, and the goal, the vision, you know, in touching on all those points, spirit, soul, and body, is to hopefully be a well-rounded man. You know, for the men listening out there, a well-rounded man, healthy in all those areas, spiritually healthy, emotionally, mentally, physically healthy. You go on the website, go on mancamp.info, and you're going to see several different testimonies of before and after photos of guys who came who were convicted of their health, their physical health, and God convicted them. And they went back home and made some changes to how they were eating and adding in some exercising and some pretty astounding stories on that side of it. And so when you hear Pat say, You know, we don't tell a whole lot about it.

It's because we don't want to, in any way, set up any false expectation. We just want you to come with an open heart and be intentional on pursuing God's heart. And then we, as a staff, just kind of step back and just watch what He does.

Well, Pat, we just got a few minutes left here.

So, currently, so you're coaching, and I know you got a landscape. Your day job, you might say, is a land, you got a landscaping business up there too, right? I do. That's my daily exercise. My doctor doesn't agree with that.

But uh that's my daily exercise and keeps me young and um Keeps me going. I'm not looking for any more jobs. What I have is fine because I work by myself now, and it's a wonderful thing to be out there and. Being out in the environment and just talking to people.

Well, that's pretty cool.

So, you're out there. And I'm excited about really the impact you're making on these young kids, right? Because many of them don't have male role models, right? And many homes nowadays, unfortunately, don't have a dad in the home to help model, especially what a godly man looks like, right? Let alone a godly husband.

And so the fact that, and I'll just say this, Pat. Kudos to you for that being willing to coach because when I look back, you know, my dad having left when I was about three, my first male mentor was seventh grade football coach Bill Burke. And then shortly thereafter, Jerry McFarlane, who is a health teacher in school and a bodybuilder, I gravitate to him. Man, and I can just list him off. Coach Forci, Coach Scrine.

I mean, I just go down the list, man. Coach Richmond, all the coaches in my life that made such an impact on my life. And, you know, the fact that playing sports just created teamwork, camaraderie. Last word, Pat. What would you say to encourage our audience out there today?

I would take a step back and take a look at yourself. Evaluate yourself. and come up with a game plan. And if you can't, talk to somebody, talk to a mentor, talk to your pastor. Get associated with somebody and have them help you on a path and.

be be accountable for somebody and all that stuff. I will tell you is hard, but when you're doing it with somebody, and you have the Lord's words And resources, you'll see that it kind of comes together. Hey Pat, what do we call at at at Man Camp? What do we call that person? You remember?

Uh Battle Buddy. Battle Buddy. Battle Buddy. You got it. We said about the same time.

Battle Buddy. And that's a good one. Shout out to my Battle Buddy, Jackie. Battle Buddy. Jackie Hill?

Yes, sir. Nice, Jackie. If you're listening out there, got your battle buddy on the line today. And, well, that's the other thing, too, is like, who would have ever guessed that I would be teamed up with a pastor? It's like, is the Lord trying to tell me something?

Well, that's a kind of a cool deal, right? And here's what's funny: we've had home, literally, homeless men and multi-millionaires attend man camp, and the God connect the two of them together, right? I mean, it's just amazing to step back and watch what God does. I just want, on a last note, just mention this. You know, Pat emphasized accountability.

He brought that word up, but that was in my head before he said it. And it reminds me of Proverbs 27:17. You know, and the iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Every one of us needs a battle buddy, no matter what your age is, and male or female. You need a battle, like men with men, women with women.

You need a battle buddy that can help hold you accountable, but at the same time, help encourage you, help strengthen you. And then, of course, you can't go wrong by diving into the word of God every day, right, Pat? Absolutely. As a matter of fact, that Proverbs twenty seven, seventeen to twenty, iron sharpens iron is our motto for our wrestling team at Norfolk Christian. Oh, I absolutely love it.

Well, Pat Scully, thank you again for serving our nation 24 years or 26 years or how many years in the military? 24 years in the military, 26 years married to Natasha. Natasha. And thank you, Natasha, for releasing Pat to come spend a few days with us at Man Camp. We appreciate you.

And to all of you out there and listening, I hope you were inspired and encouraged by Pat's story today. And again, go check out the mancamp.info, just I-N-F-O, mancamp.info. Check it out. And our next one is in October. We do one of the spring.

One of the fall down in Littletown in Georgia. Until next time, go out today. My challenge to you and just live a God-filled and have a God-blessed day. This podcast is made possible by the grace of God. And your faithful prayers, support, and generous gifts.
