Is AI a gift, a danger, or simply a tool? In this episode of If Not For God, Mike Zwick and Robby Dillmore dive into the growing influence of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence—and ask an even deeper question: What happens when we start trusting technology more than we trust God? From AI Bible studies and computers that can generate sermons, music, and conversations, to the possibility of AI companions replacing real relationships, Mike and Robbie explore both the incredible opportunities and the spiritual dangers of this rapidly changing technology. They also discuss whether AI could have anything to do with the biblical "mark of the beast," why critical thinking still matters, and why Christians should never allow technology to replace prayer, Scripture, or the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Mike shares a powerful personal story about an unexpected encounter with a young woman who was suffering from severe pain—and what happened when he felt led to pray for her. The message throughout the episode is simple: AI may be a powerful tool, but it will never replace God. Technology can provide information, but only God can provide wisdom, direction, and the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation about AI, faith, discernment, prayer, and what it means to make God the hero of our story.

This is the Truth Network. Welcome to If Not Forgot. Stories of Hopelessness That Turn to Hope. Here is your host, Mike Zwick. This is If Not For God with Mike Zwick.

Is AI a good thing or is it a bad thing? is chat GPT. Is it a good thing or is it a bad thing? I know there's plenty of people with plenty of different opinions on this subject out there, but Robbie Dilmore, you're the one who actually got me to start using ChatGPT.

So, I mean, what do you think of all this stuff, man? I think God allows us a lot of different tools. And all these tools can be meant for good or be meant for evil. And we got all sorts of opportunities to dig in. I'm excited by this show today.

But I think we better pray, which was not a bad idea just to get off to start because obviously, you know, Lord, we need your help on this subject. It's a hard one. And Lord, we pray that you would guide this discussion, that you'd be the hero of the show, that people would see, oh, there's way much more in you than there will ever be in anything man-made.

However, we've been given these tools, and Lord, let's use them for your glory. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. Amen, brother. Amen and amen.

And so when I look at this, I'm looking at Revelation chapter 6. And it's verse 13. It says, And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree cast her untimely figs when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island removed out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.

For the great day of his wrath is come. Who shall be able to stand? And the Bible talks about something called the mark of the beast, Robbie. And I'm serious. I've heard people out there think that chat GPT or AI may be the mark of the beast.

Well, you know, the Certainly, had concerns about radio when it came on the scene. A pretty scary thing, you know, this stuff coming across the airwaves, and then the TV followed it, and it wasn't very long. And we had actually computers that, oh my goodness, people are flying to the inner outer space and all sorts of things. And that looked pretty scary. And then we had the internet.

Oh, my goodness. And we had Google. And, you know, from my perspective, and it was just my perspective, having been around this stuff for a long time, is that. Artificial intelligence is simply a buzzword.

Okay. It just we've had artificial intelligence since you know we came out with the abacus.

Okay, like you're using something mechanical to make an intelligent decision, right? When I was taking, you know, this just gives my age for a minute. We took calculator math when I was in high school. And my idea of a calculator was this machine that had a row for single digits, a row for tens, twenties, thirties, and it had rows and rows of And so when you Put in your 10-point and your 20-point, then you'd pull this handle and it would come out with the answer.

Well, it was completely artificial intelligence because I didn't come up with the answer. Here was this machine that did it.

Well, all a computer is doing is something along those same lines. And then there was somebody that wrote a computer program, and it's all, you know, Google was artificial intelligence, the internet is artificial intelligence. That's right. And so AI is just this new idea of actually. to really really simplify it The the programmers Have allowed for more than one answer that can be incorrect.

Okay. And so, if you look on Gemini at the very bottom, disclaimer, and you saw this earlier, I showed you today, it says AI can be wrong. And part of the reason it can be wrong is because by. allowing for more than one answer and allowing for the the computer to actually be wrong, i i it can give you a great deal more information. But the challenge with that is that great deal more infla information can lead you way astray.

And of course we're in you know, the early days of that. But however I mean however. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed using. Artificial intelligence, not just chat GPT, but there's one called CrossConnect that I got at the NRB and, of course, had a chance to interview several programmers, Christian programmers, that all taught the same idea that while chat GPT is new, Is the time for us to dig in in Christians and teach it the Bible, right? When you study the Bible, And whenever I study the Bible, I do my best to actually use all three AIs.

I use, that I just mentioned, I use CrossConnect, I use Gemini, and I use ChatGPT. Partially because I love to see their different answers to questions that I have, but also partially because I want all of them. to become familiar With the scriptures from the point of view that God has showed me. And that's the beauty of it. You know, people, you had quoted the Elon Musk thing that, you know, this is going to exceed human intelligence.

It's laughable. I think it was what they said by 2030 or 2031. But you also said something a little bit earlier, Robbie, where you said that chat GPT will tell you that it can be wrong. Is that right? Oh, yeah.

Well, a lot of husbands out there are saying that's a lot better than my wife can do. It can be wrong. And it is wrong. I mean, anybody that's used it any length of time will know that, man, it could be dead wrong. Just like I can assure you, anybody who has used navigation has found themselves in the middle of a field somewhere and not even close to its destination, right?

And so. But I can also tell you this. I would trust navigation a lot more than I would trust myself trying to get somewhere where I didn't know how to get there. And they've even shown things like where, you know, the human mind or whatever, it's, I mean, I think it was they've played games like chess games. And the robot, which is, I guess, powered by AI, pretty much beats the human being just about every time.

So have you seen that or Again, I don't you know, I don't spend a lot of time on those kind of things. I just have really, really enjoyed Um myself using um Because again, I'd love to study Hebrew, you know that. And so we have. extreme arguments, Chat GPT and AI and and and and Gemini, over the interpretation of certain Bible passages. And it's it's it's it's an interesting challenge because when you find it that you go, That's just not right, if you go in there and and you argue with it for a while, it it It's an opportunity, but like all things, it from my perspective.

It is a tool. And my my actual fear with AI is it will what the school teachers are explaining, you hear them say it all the time, is don't go to chat GPT for all the answers that's going to keep you from thinking. Ooh, ooh.

Well, you know, it's funny you say that because I remember I went to Appalachian State and we've talked about this before. But the professor, one of our professors was saying that, do you, and this is, this may have changed.

So this was 23, 24 years ago, about 2002, 2003. And he said that, do you know what the number one the number one profess the number one jobs for CEOs, the number one What am I trying to think? They're major. That CEOs majored in when they were in college. And, you know, a lot of people said business, this, and that, and the other.

He said, no, it was actually history. And they started to study that and they started to look into it. And they said, because when you're a history major, You have critical thinking skills. You have to think through things. And so, I guess, kind of what I hear you saying is it can be a great tool, but it's not, it shouldn't replace your critical thinking.

And I think that may be what's happening to a lot of kids. And so, we talked about this a little bit before the show. Facebook is actually being sued for a very large amount of money right now because they say they know what they're doing with the algorithms.

Now, it's one thing for adults, but they're actually using kids and they're getting kids 13 years old and under to start looking at more and more stuff. And that's, you know, there can be a problem with anything. Right, it's a hook. It's a hook.

So, you are sitting there trying to understand a passage in the Bible. Yeah. And you're going to find really quickly if you go to ChatGPT or Gemini or CrossConnect. And Google. I mean, yes.

Right. And you're going to say, gee, you know, Jesus' genealogy, it's different in Luke than it is in Matthew. Why?

Okay. And it'll give you wonderful theological answers. It'll challenge you to look at a lot of different scriptures. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

My challenge is.

Okay. Where's the first place I should have asked? Right, God. And then usually, as I begin to ask God, He wants me to look where for the answer. In his word.

In his word, or back to him through prayer, through the Holy Spirit, to give me. And again, if you lean on. You know, this other understanding rather than on God, you can become lazy. You can go, oh, well, I need the answer to that because I got to teach a Sunday school class, or I got to preach a sermon, or I got to do a radio show. Right?

And honestly, you know, there are times where I'm being told. Minutes before I have to do a radio show that I'm going to do. And at that point in time, I do know that I can go to Chat GPT and give it, and it'll give me a lot of good information that I can use. on the radio.

However, again, the trap is That Wow. What am I missing out on? Because part of the The whole reason I love being a radio, I shouldn't say the whole reason, one of the reasons I love being on the radio, one of the reasons I love Giving sermons and those kind of things is the journey with Jesus in the preparation. Mm-hmm. Right.

That he shows me things as I study that are absolutely beyond amazing. Mm-hmm. But you got to realize he's the source. Mm-hmm. Right?

And I also got to realize, and this is a huge part of the equation. And I love the idea. I don't know if you've ever studied the idea of why was Saul Its name changed. Because Saul You know, had a actually, that's his Hebrew name. And Paul was kind of his Greek name.

Mm-hmm. Right? Okay. But the idea of Saul in Hebrew is this is this sort of this great Okay. person.

Mm-hmm. Paul is very much Greek and it means small. Hmm. And the idea of this has to do with I must, he must be greater, I must be smaller. Right.

is not the answer. When you think about what happened When Eve Ate that fruit. Was she thinking about Is this what's best for God or is this what's best for Eve? Right? It was Eve.

When Adam decided, okay, I'm going to join in the party. That's right. Was he thinking, gee, God needs to be greater, or does Adam need to be greater? He chose, right? When Cain killed his brother.

Okay. That's right. And on you go. When Saul, who knew the Bible better than I will ever know it. That's right.

He was chasing down and killing Christians. Why?

Because. He was not interested in what God's kingdom was. He was interested in Saul's kingdom. But when he became Paul, the story changed, as it did for Moses and many before him, where all of a sudden. God's going to be the one who's the hero of the deal.

And As Paul made that change to become smaller, to become lesser, then it changed the world forever, right? Because he became a partner with God and what God's doing, which he's the he's essentially the hero of the story. This, from my perspective, is one of the giant challenges of AI. Hmm. Because My natural tendency is to look smart.

And I don't want to look stupid. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Especially when I'm on the air. Like, I'll never, ever forget the time, you know, the lady called in and had a problem with a jaguar and she said, you know, it's making this skipping and da-da-da. And I said, well, it sounds like your spark plug wires.

And the technician that was sitting there with me on the show that day says, Robbie, those jaguars don't have spark plug wires. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I look like a fool, which is great.

Okay. Because really, I was. I didn't have a clue what I was talking about. And I shouldn't have been opening my mouth.

Okay. But the point of it is. That's what happens. In the wilderness is that I'm trying to, you know, like Israel, I'm trying to make my own way rather than making God's way. And so.

You know, uh t there's no doubt in my mind. Mm-hmm. That All these tools that we have, the Internet. you know how many Bible how many Bible tools do you do does everybody use that doesn't have anything to do with AI but in all reality it's AI right it is AI it's it's not it's not the same thing as picking up your book and and and you know going to find a You know, a lexicon or, you know, define a concordance or anything else to do your study in. I mean, you know, you don't you're not going to a library, but even those are tools.

Yeah, and you know, one of the things that I'm thinking of, and this is a little funny to me, but it says you've probably heard about this: an increasing number of people are forming romantic and emotional relationships. With artificial intelligence companions, driven by a desire for non-judgmental support, constant availability, and low effort connection. And so you're right. It's not. There to replace something.

And so, you know, the Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. That means that I don't care who you're with. You could have who you think at the beginning of a relationship is the absolute perfect person, but eventually you're going to realize that they're just as imperfect as you are. And then to me, Robbie, that's kind of the fun, whether it's a friendship or a romantic relationship or whatever it is, is getting to figure somebody out. And my dad used to tell me, he says, people think they're in love in the first six months or a year.

He said, there's really no way to know that. He says, because people are on their best behavior for the first six months or year of their relationship. He said, it's after the first six months, or if it's after the first year, when people become comfortable enough with you to actually be themselves to where you can really find out if you're in love with them.

So in other words, as they say, Robbie, it's like you love them, warts and all. And so I guess in this situation, people are looking for a yes man or a yes woman because it's basically AI can be whatever you want. Oh, it blows smoke. I mean, it's always telling you, if you ask it any question, it almost always says, that's a brilliant question. You go so deep.

It always tells you how wonderful you are. And if that, you know, if you, if. If that's a need for validation in your life, it's going to speak to that. But again, that's not inherently evil. You know, You know, we've all It's it's it Like you say, people get good information.

There's wonderful stuff that's happening. You know, it's one of the scary things, Mike, and I mean this, is that when you go right now, there's an AI app. If you want to make a song, you give it some lyrics. And it'll make a beautiful song for you, okay? With a beautiful voice, like they could never, you know, in a million years.

It's unbelievable. And I know of several people in their marriages, it really helped their marriage. They wrote their wife a song. They did the lyrics, and here came this unbelievable thing, and they loved it, okay? Hmm.

But based on the fact that I know from asking AI a lot of radio questions, it knows how to be a great radio host. And it can produce its own voice. And so it absolutely could replace me and you in Christian radio, by the way, because it knows the Bible. It knows what you say, yeah, a lot better than we do. But what it doesn't have, and the only reason I feel like.

that I'm on the air today. after all these years. I really never try to do a show without asking God, where are we going? Yeah. It doesn't have the Holy Spirit.

It doesn't have the Holy Spirit. And no matter how you look at it, it isn't It isn't Heaven touching earth. Right. And if you've done radio shows, and I've done radio shows. Where it was a caller that called in, it was something God showed up.

I don't, I can't explain it. Yeah. But heaven touched earth. Heaven touched earth. There was a, you know, speaking of heaven touching earth, there was a guy who used to go to Wednesday in the Word, and he said that every day that he would ask God to put somebody in front of him that he could help or that he could touch.

And it's so funny today. I almost never, I love doing the Truth Talk Live on Fridays. I mean, I just, it's like, I don't know what it is. It just, I can't think of a better way to start my weekend. You're the Friday guy.

Yeah, yeah, I'm the Friday guy. But. This week, my wife asked me, she said, there's a job at 3:30 or something. And she said, Do you want me to take it? I was fifty fifty and I just kind of felt led to say yes.

And so I ended up doing this job. I ended up coming on the radio. I'm going to be doing Truth Talk Live today on Tuesday. And I was with my daughter Ann, and I said, Ann, what do you want? She said, I want some ice cream.

And so we ended up going to a place to get some ice cream. And we stopped over in Kernersville and I was sitting there. We usually go through the drive-through. And we just leave.

Something just told me to go inside this time. I walked inside, we got our yogurt, I sat down, we started to talk whatever, and all of a sudden, I felt the Lord tell me to. Ask this, say hello to this young lady. She was 19 years old. She was behind the counter.

And we just started a conversation. And I said, Lord, tell me how can I share Jesus with this young lady? And so we start talking. I ask her, You're in school. I'm in school for what?

I said, Oh, what did you do that? She said, I was a worship leader. I went to school for being a worship leader.

So she says she goes to some church over in Kernersville called, I can't even remember it now, but it's right across, you know, First Christian Church of Kernersville? It's right, she said it was right across the street. And it used to be called something community church, and now it's something else. I can't remember. But anyway, so long story short, we start talking.

She's in the worship thing there or whatever. And, you know, I just said, you know, God still answers prayers. And all of a sudden, she kind of brings this up and she says, Yeah, I go to a chiropractor twice a week. And I said, well, what's going on? And she said, Well, I've got this really bad sciatic hip pain.

It's 19 years old. And she said, I've got numbness in my side. She said, I've got really bad scoliosis. And She had something else. I don't want to say it on the radio, you know, not to embarrass her.

But all of a sudden, I showed her a video, and I was just about to pray for her. to be healed. and showed her the video. As soon as I'm done, about to pray for her, a customer comes to the side. I show her another video.

As soon as I'm about to pray for her, the customer comes to the side. And this time I show her a third video, nobody's there, but her co-worker walks in, and I'm like, oh, great. You know, so it's good.

Now it's going to be like, what's going on here? Whatever. But as soon as she gets in, I'm about to pray for her. Her co-worker said, I need to go use the restroom, and I'll be right back. And I prayed for her, and right there, my daughter Ann was with me.

And I said, Tell me, I said, be honest with me, tell me where the pain is. She said, oh my God, I'm going to start crying. She said, I'm in pain all the time. The pain is completely gone. And she looked at me and she goes, Thank you.

Thank you so much. And I said, No, don't thank me. Please don't thank me. I can't heal my phone if it breaks. But I said, Jesus healed you.

And she said, Yes, yes, praise the Lord. And she said, Mike, she said, I have a Bible study every Tuesday night. and she said they hip they pray for me every week. And she said, nothing happens. And she said, you prayed for me.

And it happened. And it turned out. That she was, she never opens, she hardly either never or hardly ever opens the store when it opens. And she said, I just happen to be opening today. And I said, It's funny.

I said, I never, almost never come on Tuesdays here. And I go through the drive-thru. And I said, God wanted me to come here. And she said, I'm going to call my mom. And she called her mom and told her what happened.

And I said, what did your mom say? She said, my mom was crying. And she also told me another story about how her dad was from Mexico and she met her mom and he met her mom. And she said that her dad was having really bad headaches. And her mom ended up praying.

For her dad's headaches to go away, and they went away, and that's how her dad became a Christian.

So. The Holy Spirit, if we don't rely on the Holy Spirit, We're nothing. But I would also say this, Roddy. On the other hand, Don't completely throw this stuff away. Um you know, there was a story of uh Somebody that I heard that guy, Realism, that we listened to, or that I listened to on Facebook and YouTube, and he said.

There was a guy who died in the year 2026. And he said that he ended up going to heaven And he met the Apostle Paul, and he said, Oh my gosh, are you the Apostle Paul? And he said, yeah. He said, well, what was it like to be around the early, early Christians and to see where Christianity was booming and all these wonderful miracles and to hear Jesus on the road to Damascus? And Paul said it was pretty amazing and he started talking about it.

And he said, hold on. He said, Are you from the year twenty twenty six? And the guy said, Yeah. He said, What was it like? to be able to simply have your phone.

And to be able to take a video. And share Jesus with people where immediately dozens or hundreds or thousands of people could hear it all over the world. And the guy who just died said, I don't know. I just looked at videos of cats online. Yeah, well, that's therein lies the, you know, in that whole story of Paul.

You know, you you when you really think about what happened. Right. Mm-hmm. Paul's on the road to Damascus. And He's thinking this is what the story should look like, and Jesus has another whole plan for him, right?

He couldn't be more wrong about what life's about. He knows all about God because he knows the Bible backwards and forwards. But he, like Job, did not know God, okay? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And for whatever reason.

Known to God, he decides. To say, hey, you can't see anything. Let me make sure you know you can't see anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he blinds him.

But one of the cutest, wonderful things, wild things about the story Is he contacts his friend Ananias, right? And think about this conversation, right? Like, Jesus could have just healed Paul. He didn't need Ananias to go over and pray for him, right? He could have just healed your friend there.

Right? He didn't need Mike to go over there and pray for that girl. But He wanted to partner with Mike so that you could share this on the radio, et cetera, et cetera. Same thing with Anan Ice. He's like, Ananias, I got this for you.

What you may not know, and uh the ch church history tells us a little bit about Ananias, if if if it's to be it's not in the scriptures, but there is plenty of history on it, that likely he was one of the seventy that Jesus had sent out and he lived in Damascus. Yeah. And so he was obviously already No matter how you look at it, he was a a a friend of Jesus. Yeah. And Jesus says, Hey, Ananias, just like he said to you, I want you to go to Damascus, a street called straight.

That's right. And I want you to talk to this guy named Saul. And Ananias Right? Just to show you how friends talk. He didn't go, oh, oh, yeah, sure.

I'm on my way. No. He's like, no. Like Think of this conversation of two friends, Jesus and his friend. And his friend says, This guy's bad news, man.

He's hunting people down. This is an intimate. Conversation. That was the Bible. A book of exceptions or a book of examples?

Examples. Right, right. And and so there's there's people that get really mad at at us. Because we talk like this. Yeah.

Because they say the Bible's done, it's finished. But just think how much richer your life is because you followed the Holy Spirit in having that conversation. And you made much of God between you and her in that restaurant today. And I can't tell you the many, many, many times, right, the Holy Spirit has led me to do a radio show or whatever. Along the same ways that he did for Ananias that day.

And You know, it's it's absolutely amazing.

Now I realize people can go off the rails and not follow the Bible and and there's all sorts of Trouble by just following the Holy Spirit. You need to be in the Word constantly, you need to be praying constantly, you need to be closer to God. But oh my goodness. Right? Ananias.

Says Yeah. I don't know about this, right? And how beautiful it was that Jesus said, yeah, this is what we're going to do. Yeah. And and and and I'll have you ever looked at that passage that way.

No, yeah, I mean, I, you know, and I don't know how much time we've got, but the, you know, we actually are out. We're out. I have not forgotten. All right, for my YouTube channel. If not for God with mighty swick.
