Jay Delsing spent 25 years on the PGA Tour and is a lifetime member of the PGA Tour and PGA of America. Now he provides his unique perspective as a golfer and network broadcaster. It's time to go On The Range with Jay Delsing.

On The Range is brought to you by TaylorMade Golf. Hey, good morning. This is Golf with Jay Delsing. I'm your host, Jay Perley. What's going on in Arizona, man?

Great sunny blue skies, a little golf in the picture for this afternoon. What do you think about that, Meade? I'm tired of these guys. Do we have to have them on every week?

Nope, we really don't. Scraping it. We formatted the show like a round of golf in the first segment. It's called the On The Range segment. It's brought to you by TaylorMade Golf. You've got to check out the new stealth driver. Wow, it is awesome.

I was able to hit it. It is fantastic. And TaylorMade is no longer going to be making metal woods.

They are putting all the eggs in this basket. It's really cool. We're going to get Jeff, my buddy Jeff, who handles the Midwest region on the show and talk a little bit about getting people fitted for the right golf ball, getting people fitted for the right club, the clubs, the shafts, all sorts of things. And we also want to thank TaylorMade for, we are giving away a dozen TP5 golf balls each week. Send me an email, jatjdelsongolf.com.

You've got to spell out J, J-A-Y, and you will be entered just somewhere in the subject or somewhere in the body of the letter. Put the word balls in there and you will be entered. Pearly, we got five seconds this week for an update on our social media. Go. Things are going extremely well. Okay, cool.

We got Pearly on it. We'll put the other two seconds on your time for next week when you talk about it. We are going to, we want to thank Bob and Kathy Donahue at Donahue Painting and Refinishing, 314-805-2132. They are terrific people and they do a great job of beautifying the inside or the outside of your home. They are the people to call when you need that help.

Check them out online too. It's beautiful. All right, so John, what in the hell? We just wrapped up two weeks of Hawaiian golf on the GGA Tour.

Man alive. First of all, over in Maui, the Tournament of Champions, what did Cameron Smith do? I thought it was a typo when I saw the numbers.

Well, Jay, you should talk about this a little bit. I'm not sure how many folks know how often how golf courses are built and designed for different wind conditions, different weather and that type of stuff. And in Hawaii, if the wind doesn't blow, for that matter, in the British Open, if the wind doesn't blow, it's not colder and it's not raining sideways, the courses play remarkably different. And much of their defense system, like a lot of courses will have trees or wind or excuse me, trees or long grass, rough, super hard fast green. But if that's taken away, a couple of the conditions, meaning the weather, then those courses are defenseless. No, there's no question. So the plantation course in Kapalua is absolutely designed to play with about 20 to 30 miles an hour wind.

You've got it for me over there. The fairways are enormous, enormous, because the wind, the trade winds can blow at such a strong level that it's a really difficult golf course to get around in the wind, wouldn't you say? Absolutely. So that's why I'm saying so they talked a little about that a little bit on the coverage. But when when the weather doesn't quote cooperate per the design of the course, then the course doesn't have that defense system.

And those guys just absolutely tear it up. Now, does that mean that you should be shooting 33 under? I don't know. But he did. How about 34 under because 33 would have just got your second 32 would have got you a third second.

Second sounds good to me. Are you kidding me, though? You're birding every other hole for 72 holes. This isn't this isn't like the Vegas tournament, which used to be five rounds or the Bob Hope did used to be five rounds, and you'd get these scores run up.

This is a 72 old golf event. And then what is unbelievable, and the condition is is absolutely fantastic. But even then, there's also some major slopes on those greens. And then some of those greens are super hard to read. So it's still fascinating what what these guys have accomplished. But that's, that's just the direction of what's going on. You know, there's more and more names popping up that are kind of showing up in different places, too.

There's just there's different things. I don't know if we can get to this at a later date, but I'm out here in Arizona. I'm watching some of the college teams come out and play. Jay, this next generation coming up is a is yet another breed. I'm thinking, is this the football team coming out for a little round of golf today? These guys are big. They're strong. I'm watching them swing and just I was in a pretty good underage. And it's like popcorn.

These guys are headed 6080 past me. It's unbelievable. Pearl, how about their fitness level? And how about the way that I mean, it is it is just an entirely different game. And to speak of this game.

With the love hate relationship that we have, Cameron Smith shoots 34 under par, and wins by one stroke over John Rahm, two strokes over Matt Jones, and then goes to Wylie with no wind and MC. Yeah, welcome. Welcome to golf on the tour. You've explained that to me for a long time back in the year Nike.

I think it's your Nike days when you were on that for a couple years. And you said these guys just come out and just bomb it. And I remember guys are these holes that I didn't even conceptualize driving apart for these guys are trying to drive it into bunkers, you know, through the desert and everything else to get that.

And you just said, john, if they're on, they want to win and they're not just going to miss the cut and go home. Yep, yep. And it's, it's just amazing.

But there are some other great stuff that I want to break down a little bit further. That happened at wildlife, the Sony open. And that came out Siyama blazes the back nine on Sunday five under par. He's five back of Russell Henley, Russell Henley trying to close out a PGA Tour when I think it would have been his fourth or fifth when he's got a five shot lead with nine to play winds up losing in a playoff. He shoots 65 on Sunday with a one stroke lead not good enough.

Where do you walk away from that? And I've read a bunch about this. And Russell Henley has great attitude, as you would imagine, took a lot of positives away. But man, that's got to sting.

Oh, it's got to sting big time. It's just so much fun to watch. But it's hard to watch you guys cuz I like Russell Henry. And Henry Henley Henley, Russell Henley. Yeah, I like him.

I like there's there's a different example. He's more of a throwback. He's just a skinny little guy. He doesn't have that that new souped up game in many ways.

He's just kind of a grinder and a technician. But it's hard when you see a guy just starting to lose that traction, just a shot here, a shot there, a shot that he's up against who might be a world beater Jay if if that he takes another step or two in his game, who's going to beat that guy? John, so here's, here's, here's some data that is accurate.

Or so we say it's close. He's got 13 rounds in a row under under 70. He's won three times in his last 18 starts.

Here's a stat that's scary. The first time in his career he's ever led the tour in strokes gained putting. That shows you how much he's been given away on the greens and still a major champion. He's won almost 10 events.

And and here's a here's something for you to think about with Russell Henley. Here's a guy Matsuyama is in a playoff. He's 277 yards from the flag on 18. In the last 18 years, there have been 20 set over 27,000 shots hit on the PGA Tour.

And I was part of that last 18 years I've snuck in there and hit a few of those. They were played between 275 and 280 yards away on par fives 27,000 shots over 27,000 shots. And exactly 29 of them. This was the 29th shot that was hit inside of three feet.

Wow. Seriously, seriously, it was it was into the sun too. You know how much harder it is to hit those shots into the sun.

Yep. So he gets up there and does that and was blinded by it. And so he knew he hit it good.

But he's looking at his caddy like where did it go? It was it was unbelievable. The shot he hit.

It was just unbelievable. Jay, how old is he? Isn't he like 27 or 28 years old?

I'm not I'm not sure I can look it up real quickly. But yeah, he's, he's definitely a young man. And when Faraday and I were talking about this last year when he won the Masters might be the player that influences the most people in the world by his win. And I just think that is, I mean, you know, here at the golf with Jay Delson show, we're all about trying to grow the game, etc, etc.

And man alive. It's just fun to watch this guy. What about his rhythm, john? It just, it's just insane. It's just I wish I could do something even remotely. A lot of times you see people practicing with that. But he obviously absolutely does it. And I don't know, I just I just look at there's a lot of guys you don't know, maybe he gets settled and satisfied with what he's already accomplished. And maybe he doesn't move forward. But if he just moves forward, you said he's already starting to with the putter.

I don't I don't know. He's in that upper two or three people that could start running away with things. No doubt. I mean, he's 29 years of age, by the way, 29 years of age. So he hasn't even reached that proverbial peak for the player.

So pretty awesome. Yeah, no, no doubt. So that's gonna wrap up the on the range segment.

Don't go anywhere. We're gonna do the tip of the cap. We're gonna lead that off.

And the on the front nine. This is golf with Jay Delson. This is Paul Wasinger and you're listening to golf with Jay Delson. Thank you St. Louis for making the first annual ascension charity classic presented by Emerson a record breaking success. The golf was incredible. Your enthusiasm unmatched and the only thing that will last longer than the memories is the impact you've made on North St. Louis County charities to our sponsors, volunteers and fans. Thank you for welcoming golf's greatest legends and bringing professional golf back to St. Louis with record attendance. See you next year at the ascension charity classic. Have you heard about the resurrection of Tony Pena golf? No.

Well, listen closely then. Arpenbrand Holdings is reintroducing this iconic brand back to the golf world. And with it comes the legendary I-O-Matic feature. Some 50 years ago, Tony Pena was renowned for making world class equipment played by many of the world's best golfers, including the great Jack Nicklaus. Go to TonyPenaGolf.com right now and check out the gorgeous selection of putters, drivers and wedges they have available. I'm currently using the Jupiter Tour Select Series putter as I practice this winter and I just love it. It's milled face gives this putter that really soft, super soft feel that all tour players love. The only thing you'll like better than the look of these clubs is their price. Go to TonyPenaGolf.com and check it out. You can get a gorgeous milled tour caliber putter for a fraction of the cost.

That's TonyPenaGolf.com. One thing I've learned over the years is that many people don't realize that standard insurance policies aren't robust enough to handle their accomplished lifestyles. Ensuring your personal success adequately. That's serious business and powers insurance. They don't believe in treating clients like policyholders.

They treat them like friends and family. Tim Davis at Powers Insurance can offer more than a policy. He has the knowledge and experience to properly protect your busy lifestyle. Call Tim Davis at Powers Insurance today 314-333-4913 or find them online. Visit their website at PowersInsurance.com. Hey, I know you've heard a lot about club fitting, but I need you to go visit my friends at Pro Am Golf. They're a family owned and operated golf discount shop in St. Louis that's been operating for over 40 years. They have a top quality fitter in CJ over there and a very qualified staff with the most up to date state of the art technology in the industry at all. They've got a really cool ball program coming that will help you fit your swing speed to the right ball. But most importantly, they have the lowest prices in town on this fitting. And you know what's really special? They take the price of the fitting and roll it into the new clubs that you purchase over there.

So basically the fitting costs you nothing. Visit Tom DeGrant. He's been in the business for over 40 years and a great guy. And they'll watch you hit balls in their simulator. So stop by and ask for the delsing discount.

And they'll give you even more money off their already low price. That's Pro Am Golf, a family owned business here in St. Louis. Grab your clubs. We're headed to the front nine on golf with Jay delsing. The front nine is brought to you by the Ascension charity classic. Hey, welcome back. This is golf with Jay delsing. I'm your host Jay.

I got pearly here with me and we are headed to the front nine. That's brought to you by the Ascension charity classic September 5 through 11 at Norwood Hills Country Club. Next month, we have a big announcement coming out. It's really super cool. All in line with some of the great things that Ascension does for the community.

So keep your eyes and ears posted for that. But I'm starting this front nine off pro with the tip of the cap. And the tip of the cap is brought to you by my buddy, Colin Burt and Dean team of Kirkwood. So the tip of the cap this week is the Dean team. Colin, Brandy, Tom, Anthony, all of the group over there. These guys are like family to me.

Over a month ago, I'm bringing Joe back from a volleyball recruit trip in Indiana for her for her college. And I hit a deer out about five miles this side of Collinsville. And the car is disabled on the side of the road. I cannot tell you how great these guys have been in trying to help me figure out the vehicle, figure out what's wrong with it, trying to get a new vehicle and they have offered me a car to drive to see if I'm going to like it to try to get me in something else in case when the insurance company decides to pull their head out of their butts and and take a look at what I'm doing to see if the car is totaled. But Colin and Brandy and this entire team has stepped up bent over backwards helping me with vehicles, helping me try to figure out what's next and trying to make life as easy as possible. And that is what these guys do. They do it every day.

They'll do it for you. Pearl, you had a great experience with your Toyota. Did you get a Tundra?

I got a Tundra Crew Max, the larger V8 and I absolutely love it and they were wonderful to work with as well. Absolutely. You said it's the only time that your car truck has actually pulled the boat instead of the boat pushing the old truck. That's very true.

That's a true statement. All right. So anyway, that's the tip of the cap. I know it's a long one, but it deserves to be long. Dean team of Kirkwood, thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Call them at 314-966-0303. All right. So Pearl, did you have some trivia that you wanted to drop on me or did you want to still talk a little bit about Hawaii?

Well, I think we could be done with Hawaii. If you are, of course I'm anxious on the trivia. I just want to know if you're ready.

No, I'm not ready, but I want to tell you one little blurb because we talked about this young guy when he was, he's going about trying to get on the PGA Tour in an entirely different way. He was formerly world number one amateur in the world. We're talking about Akshay Bhatia. He did not go to college. He got his high school and like record time, his high school diplomas and GEDs and record time. And it's 17 turned pro. He's 19 now, and he's got full status on the Corn Fairy Tour. So it's really going to be fun to watch this guy and see how he does. He's a left-hander. He's a great kid. He's definitely someone to pull for.

And I just wanted to give him a shout out. Well, talk a little bit about his game, Jay. What have you seen? What do you think?

Do you think that was a good move to bypass college? I don't know enough about it, you know, because he hasn't played on areas where I can watch him enough. I've seen a swing and it looks fine, John, but you know how much the golf swing's worth. Is it capable of doing what he wants it to do?

Probably. He's a little skinny. He's still powerful. He still smashes it. But in the modern game, you know, the golf swing's never, ever, ever going to be worth more than 30 to 35 percent of what you bring to the tour.

I bet that statement shocks a lot of people, but I think it's very, very true. And how do you measure the heart? How do you measure guts? How do you measure what it's going to be like when this kid misses three cuts in a row and he's got to stand over a five-footer to make that fourth cut and then misses it? You know, Justin Rose missed his first 23 cuts as a professional. And look at the heights he went on to.

And he talks about those long days. There's just a, you've said this before, how many times to me, being a professional golfer on the PGA Tour is the job everybody thinks they want. Yeah, exactly. It's a hard job. Well, where I think it's a mistake when I hear anybody bypassing college or shortening college, you're out there getting a free education because a kid like that would get a free education.

All of the experiences you have of learning to travel to play golf and everything else that goes along with it, getting to meet the other guys, getting all of that competition under your belt to be able to do those types of things. I just think that's a tough one to walk away from. And I know some people have done it.

Kevin Knott has done it. Other people have shortened their careers and that kind of thing. But golf's not like football. For the most part, you're not going to go out there and get your clock cleaned and break an arm or break this or break that and never be able to do the same thing. I think it's unfortunate.

And I'm going to stick with that even if he becomes a world beater on the tour. I think it's unfortunate that you walk away from that experience. You know, there's another thing, there's a socialization of your personality and your development that you miss. And the solitary nature of this game can make you a nutbag. You know, that's what I am. After you get to that, there's great highs and lows in this thing.

And you really need a super support staff to be able to go home and try to recharge your batteries. And it's going to be tough. I'm anxious. I'm anxious to see how he does. I hope he has.

I wish him all the best success in the world. And let's go on to trivia. Okay, so we're going to trivia.

I'm going to do a couple to kind of warm you up a little bit. Okay, and this is all trivia that you obviously know. And you didn't have to go research and stuff because you're that kind of guy. Let's just leave it at I know it. Okay, let's just leave it at I know it. Now, you've been around this game for what 55 years, something like that.

So you should know a lot of trivia. 55 years. Am I 80 now?

Let's see. I'm 61. I've been around this game since 12. So let's say 11. So 40 years, 50 years. 49. Okay, 50 years.

Okay, fine. We'll go for that 50 years. We'll give you that. The word golf is an acronym acronym that stands for gentlemen, only ladies forbidden true or false. I think that's true. I need to keep a scorecard here.

Oh, for one fault. There was a warm up. I told you these are all warm ups coming down the pike. Okay, where did golf originate? Now think this through. Where did golf originate?

You know, I never think anything through. I know I was trying to throw you off. Slow me down. It originated in Scotland.

Although it's thought that older places existed in other places, including China and Persia, but they're they're saying Scotland. So maybe he got that one right now. I'm one in a row. That's where streaks begin. Okay, here's another layup. I'll give it to you just because I want your confidence to grow. Who is the oldest player to win the Masters?

The oldest player to win the Masters is Jack Nicklaus 46 years old in 1996. Oh, man, listen to that. We are gonna share to a new level. People just left and are now going to make a sandwich. Okay. You ready?

I got two in a row meet. I should be on something is what I should be. Yeah. What is the maximum mass and diameter of a golf ball? I don't know. Hang on. Let me go.

1.62 ounces and it's like 1.68 inches in diameter. Exactly. I don't know how Jay doesn't know that. Congratulations. Give yourself a day. There you go.

I got it. I was thinking about how did you know that me? How do you not know that? I don't know. I don't know.

Pearly snitch. You guys suck. I didn't know that.

There's no way. All right, let's go. Don't you read your golf balls? Keep it rolling. Which is the oldest golf course in the world?

I'm gonna go with Saint Andrews. Right on. Look at that. That's four in a row. Man, you are on.

I am on fire. Who is the surprise winner of the 2003 PGA Championship despite being ranked 169th in the world at the time? Sean McKeel. He won an Oak Hill. No. Tony Jackson.

Give him two of those meats because you gave him a star. Wait a minute. Hang on. Hang on.

How many holes? Wait a second. That's not true. 2003.

Tony Jack didn't win. Give me the buzzer. Oh, come on, John. You guys are sending each other text messages.

What is going on here? All right, Jay. This is for you. Here you go. We're back.

We're back. It's five in a row. Tony Jack won the 2003.

Bro, get off the crack pipe. He was the first golfer to make a hole-in-one on the television. On the television?

I can't even read the questions. First guy to make a hole-in-one on TV. Yep.

Man. I mean, I want to just say Jack Nicklaus because it's in that era. It would have been on CBS and it would have probably... Well, I know Art Wahl is allegedly has the most... We're not looking for a dissertation here. He told me to think it through a minute ago.

I'm thinking it through and now he's throwing darts at me. I know it's not Jack Nicklaus. I'm going to say Art Wahl. Tony Jack then. Oh my gosh.

This is like a gong show. Well, exactly. Okay. This is a serious one.

Which Scottish king banned golf in 1457? Now everybody knows this one. That one.

Yeah, I know Mead knows it. He's over there. His phone's blowing up while I'm over here. What are you talking about?

Keeping track of time over here. Is this segment over yet? Do you think Pearly can text me and talk at the same time? No.

That's a good point. The king. I'm going to say Richard. Nope. I got half of it right and the other half wrong. Who was it? Henry?

It's King James. The first, right? The second.

No, you got it wrong. We're great at this game. This is a good game.

I can just see the ratings. One more. Which country has the largest number of golf courses?

United States. All right. Bang. Give him a positive on that one. He got that one right.

All right. That's the end of the first ever and maybe the last ever trivia segment. Praise God. And that is, folks, that is going to wrap up the front nine. Don't go anywhere.

We promise we won't have any more trivia. We're headed to the back nine. Golf with Jay Delsing. Hey everybody, it's Vince Gill. You're listening to Golf with Jay Delsing.

I want to welcome Rapsodo Golf to the Golf with Jay Delsing show. Folks, this device is super, super cool. It's small, just a little bit bigger than your cell phone. It works in conjunction with your phone to help track your shots. It talks about launch angle, spin rate, dispersion, how far the ball goes. It is really, really something.

You can go to RapsodoGolf.com and check this thing out. It'll also give you a couple of dropdowns. You can see how they're transferring this technology into baseball and softball. And they're working with all 30 major league baseball teams now.

So this is a viable product. But if you want to practice in the winter and you want to get better and you want to stop figuring out where that ball went after you hit it into the net, get a Rapsodo and check them out. You will love it. We appreciate them being part of the show.

Go to Rapsodo.com, Rapsodo.com. Jay here, and I'm here to tell you about my favorite strength training program that has helped me play better golf. And I think it'll help you.

That's right. I'm talking about 20 minutes to fitness. 20 minutes once or twice a week is all you need to stay strong, flexible, and in shape to play your best golf. 20 minutes to fitness targets the muscle groups used in the golf swing because you always work with a trainer on physical therapy equipment. And that causes a reduction in your chance to get exercise related injury.

It knocks it down to almost zero. Folks, I've been doing this for over eight years now. And I am in the best shape of my life. If you have never worked with a trainer before, you've got to give it a try. It's a game changer. But don't take my word for it. Try it for yourself. Your first session is free. That's right.

It's absolutely free. There are two locations to serve you one and just filled one and Clayton visit 20 minutes to fitness calm to learn more 20 minutes to fitness works for me and it can work for you. We're halfway there. It's time for the back nine on golf with Jay Delcey. The back nine is brought to you by ProAm golf.

Hey, welcome back. This is golf with Jay Delcey. I'm your host Jay Pearly's with me. We are headed to the back nine that is brought to you by my friends at ProAm golf. You need to get fitted this entire segment we're doing we are dedicating to my friends at ProAm golf CJ and I just had an appointment on Monday I got fitted. Oh my gosh it is you've got to try it out but call CJ 314-647-8054 or you can visit them at ProAm golf usa.com. I was there with Tom DeGrand who has been in the golf business for 40 something years just a great guy we were talking golf he was watching the fitting. John this fitting was spectacular. First of all CJ is the bomb he knows this stuff he is as knowledgeable as anybody in town and they've got a flight scope on there it's just it was it was just fantastic. The DeGrand family has been in the game of golf for ever.

Todd and Ryan have followed their dad's footsteps. Tom has been teaching golf he is he's hung out with instructors like Hank Haney and old school guys he loves to do this and he did just a phenomenal job over there their prices are ridiculous and if you buy something from them they just waive the the price of the fitting. You can ask for a delsing discount they'll even take a little more money off of that discount you got to get over there. So here's what we did brought my clubs over and CJ looked at my clubs he just left he's like there's some from 2014 their titleist MB 14 and they I had in there John an Aerotech 95 gram shaft which is this composite shaft it's a graphite and steel combined and he got me hitting and every single hit is off the heel of the iron as you know and you may have witnessed from a time or two. Well I know from the mark on the on the iron that it's closer to the heel and you had explained in the past to me that that was a good place. Right and and and he said that for a blade iron folks do not play a blade iron do not even if you are a hell of a golfer and you're near scratch go play something more forgiving and I'll tell you why after this fitting I am a I could speak with a hundred percent confidence on this all right so what we did was I said to him I was taught when we were growing up that the sweetest strongest spot of that iron face is a little bit towards the heel and I and CJ said it was but this that was 40 years ago he looks at me and he goes it was 40 years ago dude I go has anything changed in 40 years CJ and he's like not you and I'm like exactly exactly so the first thing we did was have me hit with my irons and we measured everything okay and it was ugly my seven iron was going about 157 yards long and I could get it it was still off the heel it didn't feel great and I could still get that hook going a little bit with that as you can imagine so he gives me a different iron and all of a sudden I'm like I'm looking down and I'm like wow do I have a huge amount of hitting area to hit to on this iron meaning looking down at the face I'm like it just gives me the sense that this ball is going to be hit much better more solidly etc so we changed the face of the iron then he starts working me through the shaft so I'm not going to take you through step by step of this but it was a really cool process because all of a sudden I'm like CJ where did I hit that that felt like it was much more towards the toe and all of a sudden I started hitting the ball in the center of the clubface these are the things that show up on the screen of the flight scope that are just badass and you need to know and then we started looking at my numbers all of a sudden the seven iron first of all remember Pearl I was telling you that I thought my clubs were too short typically that is when you're off center on your hits that's the first thing they look for that was not the case the length of my clubs were fine it is the shaft was so when I was younger and had more speed in my swing that shaft would actually what we call it is droop or lag a little bit and then when it lags it falls a bit behind you and then flexes through the hitting area I've lost that amount of speed my shaft doesn't droop at all and he put one in there yeah should we edit that yeah no I think I think we should just leave it alone though I think we should just move on and talk about the shaft of the golf club that's droopy anyway put one in there and I looked up my seven iron numbers you know five to seven I'd carried 183 back to these big numbers 25 25 different yards oh my gosh it was on but I looked I'm like I smashed that ball he looks up I look up there he goes look at how far it went so so because the club head because of the shaft both so the club head giving you a more forgiving sweet spot that's huge John think about Pearl think about you talk to the listeners about what it was like when we were playing in college with those tiny little blade irons those Hogan or those Wilsons that we were all playing back then and what an off-center hit was like well nothing nothing would go where it's supposed to go short sideways lots of spin plus the golf balls that we had were so spinny it was a completely completely different game different approach to the game and everything else you couldn't stand up there and swing away like they swing away now with the equipment we had back then you would never find the golf ball so pearl in college if you could hit your four iron between 190 and 200 yards dead flush and hit it at the flagstick like you could you had a good golf swing but if you missed one in college how far did that ball go 20 yards different and it would curve more and so folks that is what we're talking about here and now we have a great technology in the golf ball there's great technology in these clubs as well and I'm telling you you do not have to go out and spend top shelf money on brand new equipment pro-am golf has gently used stuff that if it's not done in the last 10 years this stuff what your your current equipment not in the last 10 years this stuff will really help you it is absolutely critical so I got out of there I mean I was so encouraged I didn't have one iron shot feeling like it was next near the hosel where the shankopotamus has occurred in the ascension charity classic where I thought I was going to kill spectators by the by the tens tens and tens of spectators so of the things you talked about are you saying so then you are your clubs heavier or lighter they're going to be heavier I had a part of the reason that the shaft didn't flex enough was because of the lightness as well you know Jay we went through all this and you can even remember back in the day when when the feather lights were coming out even Raymond Floyd played it and stuff and I remember hating that the reason I hated it is because I couldn't feel it in my hands I couldn't tell where the club was at the top I swing I lost my feeling I'm so happy for you so you're telling me that that went straight against what we heard well you want it lighter so you can have more speed and you hit it further so you walk in there other things happen as well but the gist of it is you get a heavier club and you hit a 25 yards further there is yes John and there is a tipping point on that lightness scale right but what happened to me was the with my decrease in my club head speed and the lightness in the shafts the I wasn't getting any benefit at all from those shafts at all yeah but the 180 something with your 7 iron that's as long as you've ever hit ever I don't care about you had more that's my point okay so you can sit there and say well I didn't have that it wouldn't flex even when you could flex it when you had the speed I'm not saying you could never hit a 7 iron because you did hit a 7 iron 180 but that wasn't what you would generally play it at you were playing it more at what 171 yeah yep right but I mean Pearl I was getting amped up and and and smashing this ball and to my buddy Jeff Thornhill with TaylorMade I'm getting the new 770 iron so John this is the thing that I left out conveniently but I'm coming clean you know that the loft on my 7 iron currently with the old is the old standard and I was I was probably 3 degrees weak this new 7 iron is going to be like my 6 so the stand the new standards are 3 degrees stronger across the board everybody's equipment not everyone's I don't know how everyone has their equipment set up but you know I was weak because I never lacked length and never lacked distance in my career until now I had the pitch out yeah yeah guys I am not listen I am certainly selling Pro-Am golf here they are great people but what I'm more importantly is selling you on the importance of getting the right gear get the right gear it will really really make a difference yeah so this is the right this is the right time of year to do it right because we're off-season generally unless you're down in Arizona playing golf it's off-season meet he sneaks those things in like that and he's laughing his ass off like we didn't hear yeah somebody's in Arizona big deal we don't care we like Missouri not really it's freezing I know anyway you know pro yes now is the time to do it the Rapsodo that has joined the tour back I've got your email address I will be in touch with you guys and get you a dozen TP five tailor-made golf balls I pearl I'm starting to get an influx of emails for these golf balls and I'll be looking for yours pearl and you are not in this you know get you get no golf balls what if I go under a pseudonym what would that what would that be oh I can't tell you exactly anyway yeah anyway a couple things pearl Netflix has come out with a docu series for the major championships and the players that have committed to be scrutinized and to be part of this docu series are Shocker Brooks Koepka Ricky Fowler Justin Thomas Colin Morikawa Joel Dahmer which is going to be fun Jordan Spieth Tommy Fleetwood Abraham answer your favorite Cameron Champ Ian Poulter which will be hysterical Tony Finau and Xander Shafley this is going to be cool this is going to be an inside look at what these guys do in prep what their weeks are like what they're just a little some of their routines are going to be like some of the quirkiness that we golfers have I think this is really going to be a cool glimpse in the inside of of this world John I'm really looking forward to Netflix putting this out now why would some guys opt out what what would what would kind of come to mind why guys opt out as soon as Bryson DeChambeau said no because he's made enough of his life public Phil Mickelson said he'd give the other boys a chance of course he did and Tiger would say no 100% of the time until he ages a little more I think so they got they got a they've got a great cross section here of the the great players and what do you want to what do you want to see come of that what do you think it's going to be about what's going to what's going to pop out I don't think there's going to be much that's going to be news to me John other than it's just going to piss me off that all these guys get to travel privately yeah yeah you know what I mean remember lugging our our rolling our luggage or carrying it before they even put wheels on our golf clubs and and all that crap so yeah that's going to that's going to be interesting but I think what's going to be what's better is to get the the golf fan on the inside look and see what these guys do I think people are going to be blown away at their workout routines I think they're going to be blown away at how fit these guys are and I think they're going to be blown away at how much time they spent and dedicate to this well that's what I was going to say I think I think people will be surprised at how all-encompassing the game is you and I talked about it it's such a selfish selfish way to live because it all revolves around your game and if it doesn't I don't know how the heck you compete out there with everything else that needs to get accomplished so I think when people start seeing that it's just not you grab your club and go out and grab a caddy and walk for 18 holes it's pretty all-consuming and I think that my guess is something like that will pop to the forefront oh yeah John but what about the gear you know there's all this new technology that comes in and out of here you have contractual obligations here there's there's tons and tons of things that come that that come up that you know people don't know about yeah well that's why they've got the teams now that's probably the other thing is the kind of the entourage the teams behind it because I think that the the maybe more successful players aren't having to deal with a lot of that part that you just talked about they've got their their teams that are taking care of all the different aspects of this hopefully the guy can be working on his body working on his game and and uh and focus on getting the ball in the hole yeah absolutely I gotta tell you I did so you know I read all the golf publications that come out all this stuff I gotta geek out on this mark while you guys gotta go online and check out mark walberg's backyard if you don't think the movie business is where it's at check this out he's got 120 yard par 3 in his backyard in beverly hills this place is seriously badass there's chipping areas pearl and pitching areas deep bunkers oh my gosh I checked this thing out it just looks like a golf utopia like a like a golf playground in the backyard he's also got a full tennis court I mean a full basketball court with tennis courts that has the boston celtics logo on it he's got a pool he probably owns an ocean for that matter the dude is at this place it it's unbelievable can he play golf uh if you ask him he probably I don't know I know he's a left-hander I know he loves the game I know he's a junkie I know he absolutely loves the game and so uh we don't want to throw him under the bus too much but no no I didn't I didn't mean that I just meant if you've ever ever seen him in a pro admiral is he is he can play at all I love the fact that he he works at his game and he's got that commitment to it that's awesome yeah yeah it's pretty it's pretty cool so um uh yeah that's uh just kind of the frilly stuff that I have pearl what um do we even want to talk about where you come up with your trivia information no no that's top secret anyway I couldn't I wouldn't be able to give any of that up it would hurt the future opportunities and uh of the of the trivia uh work that I've done wow I don't even know what that answer means that is like the most soft shoe you sidestepped everywhere on that deal that was that was the idea behind it well hey elaborate a little bit more on what you're anticipating then with what you learned from getting uh fitted at pro-am golf what's the next step so you got some clubs coming in are you anxious to get on the golf course how do you see it being any different very much just the way you said your excitement that's just such a huge piece of this we've got to have a reason to kind of get excited about the different things yeah yeah the season is a piece of this but when you start believing more and more in your equipment and you were definitely questioning it you know it and to your point a little bit of age your new knee so I think it's awesome that you did that you know one thing we we joke about it but it it was hard it's heartfelt it was hard when you were hitting the uh the sideways shots in the ascension tournament but one thing we talked about is you've never done that before so it was something going on and one day I said to you dude you've never played a tournament with a uh with a uh a fake knee and you know right off the bat things have changed and now it's how that you've got a sense that hey I don't think I'm gonna hit that shot anymore and by the way if you wouldn't hit that shot if you wouldn't hit that shot you would have been competing absolutely you would have been competing because you've gotten to the tough first day you pounded it off the first tee you're feeling good you're swinging good you're stroking it as well as you've ever putted in your life and then that damn thing came up and just rocked the whole boat upside down that's where a good caddy is supposed to step in no you're absolutely right what the cat the caddy didn't know the caddy didn't know what the hell to do I was looking for a bush to hide you behind okay okay so we gotta tell we gotta tell folks this story real quickly I'm hitting the balls on the range and pureing it on the range and I can't find you and I look over and John is behind a tree googling Butch Harmon's shank cures on his phone before I play and I said what are you doing over there did you go I was trying to see what Butch would say on how the hell to get out of shank of the ball when you're on the course oh my gosh that was that was pretty fun um you know pearl with gosh I just I don't I want this to be clear I am you know that I'm not trying to spend all of our listeners money and I'm sensitive to how expensive all this stuff is but this fitting it pro-am golf you guys it's $40 they're gonna give you a discount on that if you mention my name and if you buy something they'll just wave it so guys check this out call CJ get over there and I really and truly and I want to hear from you I really and truly think that it's going to make a difference um their number 314-647-8054 or you can visit them at pro-am golf usa.com pearl that's going to wrap up another show man love it love it love it all right this is uh we've got some cool guests coming up uh on uh the golf with Jay delsing show we've got matt bender next week he is the co-founder of the amateur players tour folks wait to hear about the amateur player store it is a it is a tour going on around the country playing great golf courses for amateurs of every skill level so this is really cool I'm also going to get Jeff Thornhill my buddy from TaylorMade we're going to talk about getting the right golf ball in your hands we're going to talk about getting you fitted for the right clubs Tom Watson's agreed to come on the show I want to get Ellen Port who's one of the most delightful human beings I know and I talked this morning to Maria Palazzola who has been fixing people's golf swings for over 25 years in this area and is a badass woman human being and a great girl so we got a lot to look forward to pearl I'll see you next week more golf with Jay delsing hit it straight St. Louis.
