Absolutely nothing less than five stars for any reason under the sun or the stars or the moon or the space or the galaxies, any of that stuff. We're going to leave a couple of links in the description so you can do just that. You're welcome for that, by the way.
Yeah, you're welcome. We really are doing you all a favor, because here's the thing. I'll review the show, right?
It helps us, but we're really the ones helping you, because we're giving you good Christian content every day. All I'm asking for is a measly five-star review. And then also, I'm helping you give me a review.
So y'all are the ones out to be thanking me. All right. No, I'm sorry, but it tees me off a little bit. All right.
I'll rate it a little bit. It's okay. It's all right.
It's all right. Speaking of things that are teeing me off, I got to gripe about this, because apparently people have forgotten that we live in the South. This is the land of hospitality, right? At least fake hospitality.
At least fake it. Sure. I can't stand... This happened to me earlier. Is this a gripe vine? This is a gripe vine. Welcome to the gripe vine. We went out to lunch earlier, right?
My mom raised a good, nice, caring Southern gentleman, right? That's what you do. You open up the door for people. They walk in. Here's what's supposed to happen. Thank you, young man, for opening that door for me, holding that door. Or, if nothing else, a little tip of the hat.
Hey, thank you. I can't stand when you hold the door open for people. They're engaged in conversation with each other, and they just don't break the conversation.
They just walk in. I'm like, where do you think we are? You think we're in New York or something? Just start to close the door.
Yeah, you think this is the South. You stop and say, thank you. I'm starting to lose my voice over this a little bit. It's a common courtesy. Someone holds the door open for you.
Hey, thank you. It's never happened, at least that I can remember, where I hold the door for someone, and they're by themselves, and they just walk right past. Oh, that's happened to me. Really?
Yeah. At that point, I feel like I'd have to be like, hey, brother. Hey, I just hold the door open for you. I just say, you're welcome. They walk past me like, you're welcome.
Yeah, you're welcome. It has happened where people be in conversation, and they just don't break their stride. I'm like, this don't fly down here. Take a breath.
Take a pause, and just turn your head. If we're in a conversation, and someone holds the door open over here, I'm just going, hey, thank you so much. Now, here's how I know that this rings true, because if your youngins did that, if someone held the door open for your kids- Oh, I snatched them right up.
And your kids just walked right on through. Absolutely not. No, no, no, huh? What you're talking about is not important enough that you get to forget your manners, young man. I don't know why, but it just seems like that happens every now and then. It's like, I don't need a thank you, but at the same time, I need a thank you.
You know what I mean? It's rude. It's rude. It's rude. But you're not going to find no rude people over here. Not in Clearview Today Show.
No, no, no. We got some good southern gentlemen over here. We got Cuth.
We good southern boys. Did you say we got Cuth? We got Cuth. We got Cuth. We got Cuth.
Write it and let us know if that's a gripe of yours, if it irks your nerves, if it gets under your skins. Skins? Yeah, under your potato skins.
If it gets under all of your skins, if somebody doesn't thank you when you hold the door open from 2525825028 or you can visit us online at ClearviewTodayshow.com. Got a secret word for y'all today. Secret word. Secret word.
We're going to try to sneak past Dr. Shaw in our conversation. Encumber. Oh, encumber. Like when I pick up too much gear in an RPG and my character can't move. And your character's encumbered.
So my character's encumbered. I thought it was like the opposite of a cucumber. This is like... An encumber? Yeah, this is like... You got a cucumber and an encumber.
Yeah, no. This encumber means that you are burdened or weighed down. So yeah, like you're in Skyrim and it's like, oh, oh. You've exceeded your carrying capacity. Now you're encumbered.
It's like all I want is this little... And you're moving at half speed. Yeah, it's like I've got a two-handed sword. I've got a shield. I've got all this leather armor. I've got like nightingale armor. But I just want to... Can't carry all that, brother.
It's like, oh, I just want to pick up this little mushroom. Nope. Not Ryan Hill partner. Not your encumber. Not Ryan Hill. Anyway.
Not Ryan Hill partner. We're going to sneak encumbered past Dr. Shaw. We're going to try to anyway. Stay tuned.
We'll be back after this. Hey, Ryan. Hey, John. Hey, man. How are you doing on the show with you?
Thanks, man. I hope people are having an awesome time listening to it. Well, listen, I think our listeners would actually be interested to know that Clearview Today is not the only podcast we produce. Oh, do go on.
Oh, well, go ahead and stop what you're doing right now. Mosey on over to your podcast app and subscribe to Sermons by Abaddon Shaw, Ph.D. As many of you know, Dr. Shaw is our lead pastor here at Clearview Church. And every single week, he preaches expository messages that challenge and inspire us to live godly lives. One of our core values at Clearview Church is that we're a Bible believing church, which means that every single sermon is coming directly from the text. And it's great because whether you're driving, cleaning the house, working out, whatever you're doing, you're listening and receiving timeless biblical truth. And God works through every sermon differently, which means you're always going to get something new. Sometimes it'll be conviction. Sometimes it'll be encouragement.
That's right. You guys can check out Sermons by Abaddon Shaw, Ph.D. on the Apple podcast app. You can find it on our website as well. That's ClearviewBC.org. You can even read the transcripts of every message on Dr. Shaw's website. That's AbaddonShaw.com. Love it. John, you ready to hop back in?
Let's do it. Welcome back to Clear View Today with Dr. Abaddon Shaw, the daily show that engages mind and heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ. You can visit us online at ClearviewTodayShow.com, or if you have any questions or suggestions for new topics, send us a text to 252-582-5028. That's right. And we're here once again in the Clear View Today studio with Dr. Abaddon Shaw, who's a Ph.D. in New Testament textual criticism, professor at Carolina University, author, full-time pastor, and the host of today's show.
You can find all of his work at his website. That's AbaddonShaw.com. Dr. Shaw, I want to lay the scenario out for you. Let's say you're walking through a door, right? And you've been the southern gentleman that you are.
You hold the door open for someone. Southern gentleman? The southern gentleman that you are. Well, I've been here for 30 years. Yeah, that's what I say. I would say you're more of a southern gentleman than anything else. You've been living in the South longer than some people in this room.
That's true. I think almost everyone in this room. Well, no, you're 35. Yes.
We've got to move by a little bit, but not much. So as you have, as you've been taught in your many Cotillion classes, you hold the door open. Cotillion?
Yeah, he went to Cotillion, right? Okay, sure. Okay. You open the door for someone. Okay. They're in a conversation.
They walk through and don't break their conversation at all. Right. What is your response? What is your reaction to that? I'll be honest.
It doesn't feel good. Exactly. Yeah.
Who do you think you are? Yeah. Do you think we're like up in New York or New Jersey or something where you just walk right past it? No, you can acknowledge me. It doesn't take that much mental effort.
If we're locked in conversation and you're holding the door, it doesn't take that much mental effort to go, thank you so much. Oh, yeah. And then continue your conversation.
Yeah, no. That's all it takes. I'll have people do that. And it's annoying. And then I have to examine my own heart. Why am I doing this? Am I doing this so I can get a thank you? That's true.
Am I doing it to test their gratitude or is it really because I'm being a good person? So I have to then say, you know what? Whatever. I do often have that spirit when I'm holding the door and somebody walks through and they don't say thank you.
I want to be like, ha! Gotcha. Gotcha.
You're a doof. Gotcha. It's one of those things where I'll do it, but then I have that same kind of check and I'm like, why do I feel I need a thank you? But then that other part comes up, because it's right, you're going to say thank you to me.
So that's when I go up and I kind of shake it. But then my motivation is wrong then because I'm doing this not because I'm genuinely wanting to be hospitable. I'm doing this because I want to get a thank you to that. Can we at least agree, can we at least agree that even if your motivation is right, if they don't say thank you, if they don't even tip the head, like I'll take a head tip.
Some people in the South, they don't say thank you. Can I at least agree that if we don't get that, then you're in the wrong. They're in the wrong. Oh, they are in the wrong.
That part is not to be debated. All I'm saying is, why am I in the little bit of a wrong as well? Them being in the wrong does not give me an excuse, even if it feels just like it should.
But you're only in the wrong because of where you're at. Like if we were in New York, I wouldn't even think about that. If we were in New Jersey or whatever, I would be like, whatever, that's where we are. But we're in the South. You can't behave like that in the South. And in the North too, there are a lot of people who do say thank you. So I think it's a misunderstanding that if you hold doors in up North, nobody will say thank you. Now, maybe New York City is different. That's probably where people don't say thank you, they just kind of walk past you.
Not everybody, but many times they're like, have the headphones on or the earplugs on and they're just rolling. But many times I've been to other parts of up North and they do say thank you. I think one of the things that Southerners do, at least I know I did, is thinking you can take that Southern charm and you'll be different and you'll stand out from everyone.
They'll appreciate it. You're odd. You're odd. Because I remember when we went to New York for Comic Con, we were staying in New York City and I went to like a deli or like a sandwich shop or something. And I remember being like, I'm going to just try to engage and be like, I ordered my sandwich like salami or whatever. And then I was like, how have y'all been this morning? He's like, what? Like, y'all just, y'all been busy or what? I was like, ah, nothing, man.
Just give me my food. Nevermind. I got scared instantly. I was like, no.
He does not translate. He just, he was like, what? And I was like, ah, nevermind.
What are you saying to me? Nevermind. I'm good. That's all right. Just trying to be nice, man.
Just trying to be nice. Don't do that here. Don't do that. Yes, sir.
I won't. Yeah. The verse of the day today is coming to us from Deuteronomy chapter 11 verses 13 and 14. And it shall be that if you earnestly obey my commandments, which I command you today to love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain that you may gather in your grain, your new wine and your oil.
It's just this promise of that God gives in the Old Testament, really, I think all throughout scripture that if you return to me and I think we see we've been seeing this a lot, Dr. Sean, your series on the book of Judges, I know you've done series on Nehemiah in the past where this theme is always there, where it's God's promise, where if you return to me, I will bless you. Right. You know, you come back and there's always that way back. There's always that second chance. But if you return to God, then God will bless your life. Absolutely.
And the early in the latter rain is is really special because God doesn't just, you know, here's the rain, you know, but he is very strategic and very, you know, planned in his blessings as well. So, so he gives us this right. Go and hit that. I'm thinking about how I'm going to put it in there. We need to find a way to loosen my my my mouth a little bit because I'm smiling.
Yeah, I do the same thing, too, if I have to do that. I'm like, for those of you who are wondering what exactly we're laughing about is because John is trying to get the secret word going. But I keep smiling every time I think about it. I haven't said it, but I'm smiling.
I'm like blocking his mouth. Yeah, just doing some of this right here. I can tell.
That's funny. So, yeah, God is very strategic, very purposeful in how he blesses us. And so just because the rain stops after the early period, don't think that God doesn't care. Very true. He is in his time going to send the latter rain.
Sometimes you have to wait and that's OK. The latter rain. That's an album.
The latter rain. The L.A.T.T.E.R. Bro, that's the next clear view of that one. Write that down. I'm for real. Write that down. Legitimately, I'm writing that down. Write it down.
Well, maybe we should take this out so no one steals our idea. The latter rain. I'm not joking. I think that's beautiful. The latter rain.
It is. It's a great reminder that I love that God is strategic in his blessing, too. Sometimes I think we get the wrong picture of God because of misinformation or because of misunderstanding. We think of God either as we've got to prove ourselves to him, so he's almost like sitting up there in judgment, kind of waiting, almost like a Zeus figure, waiting for us to mess up.
Or he's like a Santa Claus. He's just raining down countless blessings on us. But God blesses his people in a strategic way, in the way that is the most beneficial to us. He gives us what we would ask for if we had the sense to ask for it.
Absolutely. And it's so timely, too. We're a people who have been so burdened, so encumbered with so many things. And I think one of the best things about that, knowing that God's mercy is always there and it's always new, is that there's this relief. There's this coming out of the dry season, the heavy season. I think you even said it a couple of days ago, Dr. Shah, when we were talking about the election results.
It feels like there's a release, like a breath of fresh air. Right. Right. You get that? It was encumbered. Encumbered?
I didn't even hear that. I tried to get it out. I'll have to... We're going to start. Here's what we're going to do now. All right, go ahead. From now on, you have to use it more than once.
More than... Okay, I'll do it. Yeah.
Okay. It has to be done more than once. I'll do it. Do you want to... Is that three times?
Get it in there? Three times? No, I would say two is enough. Two is enough.
Maybe when we do this, maybe the more times you can get in, the more points. Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay.
So you try to cross a certain points threshold. Sure. Yeah. Got you. Got you.
And see if I can catch it. Yeah. Because I'm like encumbered. I mean, that's like... Okay. That's a normal word. That's a normal word. Yeah.
It's semi-normal. If I can extend this just for a few moments. Yeah, go for it. Go for it.
Go for it. The hard thing is between the early and the latter rain to wait upon God, to not lose heart, to not get discouraged, to not get disillusioned. That is... Great point.
... very important because between the early and the latter rain is where the enemy comes to us and says, yeah, God may have blessed you, but he has forgotten. Right. Right. He doesn't care anymore. Things have changed. You have messed up.
Life is different now. And so you have to trust God that what he has started, he will complete. Amen. Just the way scripture says, Paul says that, right? We are confident that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
That's right. And so in that period, maybe it's with your family, maybe it's in your health, maybe it's with our nation, where we saw some early rain and then we were wondering, is the latter rain going to come? And latter rain came. Amen.
Yeah. But in that period, you begin to wonder. It's like, maybe God is done. Maybe God is through with America, and that's not the case.
Right. And it always seems like those waiting periods are so much longer, those dry periods are so much longer and expansive than those rain periods. But I think it's only because, and maybe you can kind of speak to this as well, it's only because we either don't recognize the rains when we're in them, or we start to stray. We start to wish things were dry again so that we, you know what I mean? It's almost like we don't recognize the good when we have it, until the rain stops and then we're like, oh, I really miss when it was raining.
I truly believe this is blessing somebody and encouraging someone out there on the radio or on YouTube or wherever. That period between the early and the latter rain, we're talking about that. And you said, sometimes it seems longer. And that is true, because when you're facing a difficult time, you don't see things from God's perspective. Right.
That's true. A day is like a thousand years. A thousand years is like one day. Your day or your year or two years or five years may seem like this has just gone too long. Yeah.
Too far. Yeah. And we don't see things, the big picture. Right.
We don't see, we don't, we're not able to step out and look at it and go, that's only five days. Yeah. Yeah.
From God's perspective, those five years, well, actually it's less than that. Yeah. Yeah. It'd be like a few minutes.
A few minutes. Yeah. It's a few minutes from God's perspective.
Yeah. And we don't see those moments. A lot of times we think of suffering or we think of difficult times or even times where God is quiet. It's not always where we're going through something harsh or intense suffering. God may just, we may not be able to sense him as clearly as we can other times. But even in the quietness, even in the stillness, you know, we know that God is working. We know that he's moving and that confidence that's based on when God sends the early rain and when God sends the latter rain helps us in the dry season.
Great point. Like coming near the end of the Old Testament, like coming near the end of it. And this is something that I think I always misunderstood about that 400 years of silence.
What's the last book? Is it Malachi? Malachi.
Or yeah, Malachi, between Malachi and Matthew, that 400 years of silence. I always saw that as curse. Like I always saw that as that's God's punishment. Right. But I, and I think I was talking to you and it was, and you were like, no, it wasn't his punishment. That was just part of his plan. Right. That was part of his, his divine. Crazy things happen, right? You had the, you had the, the kingdoms were already split by this time and the Jewish people were back in the land. But you also had the Ptolemies, right? Or yeah. Ptolemies?
I think so. Ptolemies are in Egypt. The Seleucids. Okay.
Right. Antiochus, Epiphanes and all, I mean, you had some bad things happen. When you had the rising up of this false priest. We're talking about the, those who took like Annas and Caiaphas, right?
Where did they come from? Yeah. The whole Saducian movement that came. Not a good thing. Right. You know, some of these things really, these are the people who opposed Jesus when he came. Right. And these people were sort of birthed in that silent ear, probably more closer to, closer to the 200 years before his coming, this, all these things began to happen.
Just the rumblings. Right. But this was also a period where God's people no longer wandered towards idolatry. This was also a period when they began to wait on the Messiah. Great point. Yeah. It was also a period where more and more of them were demon possessed. Yeah.
Cause I remember you made, you made a mention of that, like once the Jewish people came back from that second exile, that Babylonian exile, they never got into idolatry again. Yeah. So you would think, all right, cool. Story's over. We're in the clear. This thing that we've always struggled with is finally conquered. Now it's just smooth sailing from here on out. But then all of these other rumblings start to come up and then this, this 400 year silence from God.
And I remember specifically being shocked, maybe not shocked, but surprised that that wasn't punishment for anything. You know what I mean? Right.
And that it's just a natural part of how God operates. Yeah. Right. Right. Great, great, great.
This is great discussion. Hopefully somebody somewhere is encouraged. God has cinched at latter, early reign in your life, maybe years ago, maybe a few months ago, but you are going through this silent period. Don't lose heart. Later reigns will come. God has promised. He will send them. In the meantime, keep pushing forward, keep trusting God, keep obeying him, keep glorifying Jesus Christ. Keep doing that.
You gave a really great picture and a message one time and it stuck with me and I've used it in talking with students. You know, you have the person who is, when their employer is around, they, they are very productive. They are, they're accomplishing a lot. They're getting tasks done. They're knocking things down. And then when the employer is not there, they're not working quite as hard. They're not quite as motivated. And then you have the other person who the employer is around and then he's not around and they're, they're constant. They're, they're still knocking out their tasks.
Even if that employer doesn't show back up for a day, two days, a week, a month. No one's there to say attaboy or, you know, you're doing such a great job. There's no praise. There's no compliment. There's no praise.
There's no compliment. There's no adoration, but, um, that employer, that employee is still working, which is more valuable. Well, that's the second one, of course. And that's how we need to operate in our relationship with God. You know, even if we don't get that attaboy, even if we don't get that downpour after an act of faithfulness, we need to continue in faithfulness to God. And this applies in your home life, in your marriage, with your children, with your grandchildren, with your, um, church family, with the lost around you, you're praying for somebody. And man, it was like it began to click and they began to come to church, but all of a sudden they have wandered away.
Well, wait on the latter rain. God is not done. He's going to take them through a period of trial because trials are how we get closer to God.
So they have to go through that, but there is no trial. It seems like they're having a great time for now. Trust God. He's going to take them to the fire. When they go to the fire is when they go, Oh, I just thought about that, that age old argument that couples always have is that like, if the husband is being silent, it must be because he's mad at me. He must be, he must just be just living with me or he's thinking about something else or he's thinking about another woman or he's trying to get out of this relationship and it's like, why aren't you talking?
What's wrong? Are you mad? And he's like, no, I'm not mad. I'm just being, I'm just being silent right now.
This is a natural thing. And I think it's that kind of that same thing where as, as Christians, a lot of time, if we are not hearing from God in a very obvious way, that's what we want. We assume, okay, he's, he's done. He's just done with me. He's abandoned me.
He's left me. And also the enemy is, I know we kind of going round and round on this. Maybe this is some, somebody needs to hear this and maybe we'll land the plane soon and then try to board another one. But that's when the enemy whispers and he'll tell you, God doesn't care. God is, God has forgotten you and this is too far gone and this will not happen.
But no, don't, don't, don't listen to him. Those lies oftentimes are loudest when we're in a dry season, when we're waiting on the ladder range. That's right.
That's when, that's when the lies really have hooks that sink in deeply and we start to believe them. Yeah. I think about some of the stories from the Old Testament, some of like God's men of valor and God's prophets, like even like Nehemiah who had every reason to think God has completely abandoned us.
Yeah. But then having that call to come back home and knowing and like seeing like the first, like you know when you can smell the rain in the air, but the rain hasn't come yet. Like I think a lot of times when I think about that call that Nehemiah got to come back and start rebuilding the walls, he could start smelling that rain.
He knew that that blessing was coming. I was talking to somebody about that recently being able to smell rain coming and they're like, what are you talking about? Like you go outside and the air smell it when the, when the rain's on the way, the air has a different smell and they were just completely baffled, but you're absolutely right. You can kind of sense when that's happening. And having the discernment to know that, like imagine having to go to the King and be like, Hey, look, I, I got to go. You know what I mean? I have a feeling blessing is coming or I can sense that blessing is coming. I got to go do this for my people.
Like the courage that it would take to act on that without seeing that blessing right in front of you. Yeah. Well, where we are in America right now, we are very much like the time, the time of Nehemiah where God's people had come back to the promised land. Not all of them, Cyrus had set them free and over a hundred years, some period.
And we'll, we'll go through a little bit of a history lesson as we talk about this. But they, they slowly began to make their way back. Some cave, they came in waves and and they rebuilt the temple, but the walls around the city of Jerusalem were still destroyed back from the time of Nebuchadnezzar. And so imagine the walls still torn down.
So wild animals can still come in. Marauding tribes can still come in. The enemy knows that you're completely weak. And any moment they can attack you, you don't have a sense of dignity.
You don't have a sense of vision and hope because you don't know the parameters of who you are. Yeah. Your walls are dead. Like anybody can just come right in. That's right. You're vulnerable. And I believe in many, many ways, that's where we are in America today.
The walls are still lying down. We're back in the land in a sense we're back from exile. And I know people will disagree with me and you have a right to disagree. Welcome to America. Yeah. Just don't be disagreeable. Right. Right. Don't be disagreeable. You have a right to disagree but don't be disagreeable.
Right. Be nice. Be nice. And we can talk. We can have a discussion. But that's where we are in America.
We were in exile over the past, I would say, four years at least, if not a little bit more because of all the attacks that kept coming against us as a people and who we are and what we believe and what we hope for. And now, all of a sudden, with the outcome of this election in 2024, there's a shift. A huge, huge shift.
It is. And we're on the very, very beginnings of it. That's what I like about it is having the foresight to be able to see it right now, sort of like Nehemiah did, and knowing that all these conversations are going to be happening months and maybe even years from now. But knowing on the forefront that we're on the verge of a massive cultural shift. Yeah.
Yes. And that's compared to the rebuilding of the walls around the city of Jerusalem that God did through Nehemiah. That's what's happening in America. If you want to read a book and look at what's happening in our world right now, especially in America, read the book of Nehemiah.
Hold it side by side. Great point. And it'll help you understand what to do, how to do it. And I hope our president, President Trump, will also see that. And we pray for him every day. Millions are praying for him.
And where we are is because of prayer. But I'm hoping he will also see that he is, in a sense, in Nehemiah. But I think it's very interesting and it's something that we can kind of point out as we walk through that a lot of the opposition that Nehemiah faces isn't just spiritual, but it's from people.
There are people who are standing in his way, trying to actively prevent him from making his city great again. Right. Right. And we have to see things that are happening around us through the lens of scripture.
And once we do that, that's when we will have a clear direction. The scripture is the truth. Now, if you disagree with that, I'm sorry. This conversation may not be for you. I hope it isn't.
I hope you will be converted and you will see the reason for that, why we say the scripture is the lens through which we see everything in life and what's happening in our country right now. Good things are happening. Yes. And I hope this will encourage you, this series that we're going to be doing. Absolutely.
Yes. And our goal is for this series to help provide a clear view. We call it clear view today. It's our goal to provide a clear view on what's happening in the world around us. So as we're walking through the book of Nehemiah, I want to encourage you, have your Bibles out, follow along with us and see what God did in Nehemiah's life and through the life of the people who surrounded him and what God is doing in America today.
