I could say there's a fair number of quarterbacks who stepped on campus, if you will, and made an instant impact. And that's our question tonight. In light of messy, messy, messy, messy, messy. I don't have the cool accent. Messy, messy, messy, messy.
I don't have it. It's unbelievable. You have to see it to believe what messy is doing right now. Miami has not lost in the eight games since he was introduced as their brand new superstar in pink, if you will. What do I tell you about real men who wear pink? Real men wear pink.
Real men cry over something other than sports. And real men will absolutely carry a fufu bag for their lady. I have more real men rules, but well, it's more like guidelines, really.
It's a collection of guidelines. That's what real men do. Exactly. Thank you, LeBron. Real men apologize as well.
That's another one. But in this case, real men wear pink. And messy in that pink jersey is the hottest thing going right now in sports. With my apologies to anybody else. I'm sorry.
With my apologies to LeBron, Aaron Rodgers, bums. With my apologies to Taylor Swift, I say messy is hotter than Taylor Swift right now. Producer J, messy or Taylor Swift? Which one's hotter? If you asked me a month ago, I would have said Taylor Swift right now. You would have said Tay Tay. It's messy. Well, Leo started out with a huge lead in our poll and has now fallen way behind Tay Tay.
So we're going to need some more messy, some more messy mania, if you will. Love it. So find our poll on Twitter after our CBS or my Twitter, and then we're asking you as well, what other athlete has landed with a team and instantly changed the trajectory of that team, that franchise? Whether to the tune of championships or maybe not yet, but messy, I say Breonna Stewart with the New York Liberty, definitely Patrick Mahomes, two MVPs, two Super Bowls, two Super Bowl appearances, five straight AFC championships.
Are you kidding me? Travis Kelce who's now a Hall of Famer for heaven's sakes. Poor Tyreke Hill.
What did he do? Although I guess he won't be singing a sad song if he ends up over 2,000 yards this season thanks to Tua. We're going to hear from Tua coming up in QB News in just over 15 minutes here on After Hours with Amy Lawrence CBS. Hey what's up this is Tyreke Hill. I just want to say welcome to the 305 Lionel Messi.
Even Ty was to get on board with Messi's Miami mania. Now we got two number 10s but uh-huh that's true. Even if Tyreke Hill is not the most popular athlete wearing 10 right now football is still king. Our football. Do you know I was recently a guest on a podcast with a guy named Zach.
Great guy. Had me on his video cast a couple of times now and one of the questions he asked me is about was about the NFL and the popularity and why it's so much more popular and there are a couple of reasons I gave. One is it's once a week.
It's appointment television if you will or appointment viewing. Maybe you're in the stadium but that increases the sense of urgency. Now you will never get me to tell you that oh in the NBA the NHL Major League Baseball every game doesn't count because that's dumb.
They all count for the same exact weight so of course every game counts but when there are fewer games the pressure again the sense of urgency the impact of every single weekend it's heightened. It's underscored but also here's here is my number one reason why the NFL is so popular here because it's ours. We don't share it with anyone else except for when Roger Goodell needs to send it off to Europe or to Mexico but we don't share it. It's just in the United States. The NFL is football de Americano and it's ours except for when we loan it to the English to the Germans to the Mexicans either across the pond or in Estadio de Mexico. We claim it we name it we're obsessed with it and we don't have to share it. The NHL is on multiple continents the NBA well I shouldn't say the NHL hockey is on multiple continents basketball is all over the world baseball is played everywhere as well football is exclusive to us here in the United States. Now have we shared it right with Canada with Mexico of course but it's still ours for better or for worse we're obsessed we're the leader in football we we insist on calling it football when the rest of the world refers to a different sport is football that's my favorite part as Americans we're so hard-headed we don't care what the rest of the world is doing we're going to call it the same thing that you call the your sport but screw your sport this is our sport now it's like Fahrenheit or or not the not using the metric system get out of here I love the fact that we are unique it's after hours CBS Sports Radio take our poll tell us your athletes that have had an almost single-handed impact on a team that was marked market it was market is that a weird word is that a weird word that is a weird word market it's a word though I kind of like it actually do you walk around saying Mark trying to incorporate it more okay good eight five five two one two four two two seven Tim is listening in Portland Tim what do you think? Hey Mimi hello hello got me right in the middle of eating a piece of bacon I'm cooking here at Katie O'Brien's Portland that sounds yummy I can take some steak absolutely delicious I it's my my duty to prep all the bacon so when I'm making five sheets of bacon it's kind of tough not to nibble ah that sounds amazing I bet it smells good too unless of course it's turkey bacon and then not so much no no this is this is 100% swine anyway I think I have a good one Amy it takes takes you back a little bit but this is for our generation a little bit you and I Kurt Gibson 1988 came over to the Dodgers and completely not only you know changed their trajectory but changing the culture yes very early on in spring training they was in an attempt to welcome him to the team they played a practical joke on him and he was very nonplussed he was unimpressed love the word and he he took the team to task and basically said hey this is why you are you you know and sure enough they just um all lined up behind him and they ended up winning the world series that year right well and and I have a few sports memories before that one but who could ever forget his home run in game one of the world series and the fist pump and the fact that he's out there on one leg I mean I'll now I watch that live I will never forget that moment again there may be a few moments that I can remember in sports so vividly before that one but that is one of my earliest fan memories that that I will never forget yeah I was actually working at one of my very first jobs I was 18 wow and uh fresh out of high school okay um and I was it was a very inconsequential job but uh I would go into I worked at a hotel and I would go into the kitchen and the the cook there had a little black and white like five inch screen do you remember those things um I think maybe maybe we watched the ball game on uh on that watched I came in right for uh that moment and I was so excited I was the biggest Dodger fan still am the biggest Dodger fan in the world so excited that I actually I had to walk out I had to walk out on it was I you know I just could not contain myself I needed to celebrate and not be tasked with any duties I remember I was home I was growing up in New Hampshire so I remember watching it with uh I think my brother and stepfather at the time so yeah it was a one of those moments that I always remember where I was when and will never forget just the feeling the emotion of watching him circle the bases as he hobbled right and the whole game they if I remember correctly they'd been talking about the fact that he wasn't available yeah the Garagiola and Vince Scully both had mentioned several times how that's not going to be an option there's one thing that we know is that he will not be pinch hitting right right I don't believe yeah it was it was pretty amazing what I just saw yeah it was awesome made for great tv hey Amy thanks so much for letting me on I wanted to uh set a quick shout out to James the producer for playing Ace Freely earlier in the program that was nice oh wait went right over my head I have no idea who that is or what the music was but I'm glad you appreciated it Tim it was back in the New York group all right well good all right you and Jay are our brothers for another mother awesome Tim thank you you got thank you I know that oh so we got a wait did you see what happened when I just pushed this like the computer nearly fell off the desk don't you worry I caught it but yeah computer nearly fell off the desk that's good it's always something happening here could you imagine we should try that again I should not catch it just to hear the extremely loud crash that would go over the microphone we would have remember the John Sterling thing uh from shoot was it a few years ago where either something hit the microphone or he hit the microphone fell out of his chair too swung on a pop foul back here it really hit me I didn't know what's coming back that far that was really funny oh sorry John that was kind of funny now that we know you're okay but that's not the one I was referring to there was one where he fell out of his chair or something yeah and also do you remember you'll have to google this but because I don't think you and I were working together at the time Shaq is in our hall of flame for this moment where his big old feet get tangled up under the TNT inside the NBA desk and when he starts to stand up his feet are wrapped in cords and he not only falls over but he takes like the whole computer system with him underneath the desk if you find it let me know because it's really funny it's kind of what I'm talking about I'm pretty confident that if I allowed the computer screen the console to fall off of the the desk here in the studio that it would make a very loud crash that would become legendary here on after hours so if you find it let me know you found it that was a good crash did you hear that crash Shaq tries to stand up quickly and when he does he takes out the whole damn computer system Kenny freaks out that's seriously that moment is in the after hours hall of flame it's it's typical it's atypical I should say and it's not what we put generally put into the hall of flame but pretty amazing all right so let's go through some of your answers and then we'll do QB news following our first break this hour it's after hours on CBS sports radio we're asking you one athlete who almost turned a franchise or a team completely around at the very least in a different direction change the culture change the trajectory change the direction whatever it is what other athletes like Messi in Miami have had this kind of impact a few people have responded with this answer I like it these are Orioles fans Adli Rushman so Adli Rushman has in fact now there are people around him but him being part being homegrown being part of the Orioles getting up to the majors it's been amazing to watch it's so much fun can they they are first place in the AL East they've got one of the best records in major league baseball can they carry this through to October that's what I need to know this is stuff that legends are made of another tweet goes with Emmett Smith but I'm wondering if that's Emmett Smith with the Cowboys or Emmett Smith with the Cardinals he's a great Cardinal I'm gonna go with Emmett Smith with the Cowboys the Dallas Cowboys a Hall of Famer obviously Tom Brady says Joe he's headed for the Hall of Fame and yeah we're gonna get a bunch of votes for Tom Brady as well Rob says I have to go with Jeter Derek Jeter joining the Yankees first ballot unanimous Hall of Famer oh wait no he wasn't yes he was was who first ballot I don't think he was unanimous there wasn't there one or two it was either him or Mariano Rivera that didn't go in unanimously I think Rivera did and Jeter did not he was what two or three votes shy ridiculous it is utterly ridiculous so Rob says Jeter with the Yankees or Donovan McNabb joining Syracuse football early in his career yeah it's kind of funny people forget he actually was a two-sport I wouldn't call him a star at Syracuse I was there when Donovan was the starting quarterback for the Syracuse Orange and he also played basketball but he wouldn't join the basketball team until halfway through the season right because Syracuse was was a winning team then with Paul Pascualoni and so he would join the team halfway through it's not that he wouldn't be in shape but it's completely different you're out of rhythm you're out of sync but the carrier dome of which I was part would clamor and yell for Donovan and whenever he got into the game generally late in the game they might sub him in early if it was a close game but a lot of times especially when he first joined the team after football coach Boeheim would use him in games in which they were out of reach right so that he could get some reps he could get some time on the court kind of shake the rust off and get back into basketball shape the carrier dome we would go nutso to get Donovan in the game it was it was amazing yes so that's kind of fun but yeah his his immediate impact would have been with the football team the Syracuse Orange football team so we're asking you to weigh in on either twitter a law radio or our facebook page matt on facebook Manny Ramirez when he first got to the Dodgers which is kind of funny you wouldn't think generally Manny in the Dodgers you'd think Manny in the then Indians Manny in the Red Sox but you wouldn't think Manny in the Dodgers he definitely was Manny being Manny with the Boston Red Sox and and the Indians too funny story about Manny Ramirez he used to get his vehicles from the same dealership in Cleveland where I bought my Saturn ION so if you haven't heard this story I'll just briefly my first ever car that I purchased she her name was Dixie she was an icy blue and I drove her 306,000 miles when I finally gave her away after 10 years I drove 300,000 miles on that car in 10 years when I finally gave her away it was because I had moved here to New York and could no longer have a stick shift it just wasn't practical in traffic in New York traffic and so I gave her I gave her away to a police officer's family the last I knew she was still running so Saturn ION 300 plus thousand miles I bought her at the same dealership in Cleveland where Manny Ramirez would get his cars Manny was so spacey that he frequently would leave his paychecks so it wasn't direct deposit for whatever reason he would leave his paychecks in the glove department glove department the glove compartment don't ever repeat that anyone he would leave his checks in the glove compartment of the car and not even notice three weeks later they'd still have his check he wouldn't even notice that the check didn't hit the bank wow didn't care that must be nice they would actually have to mail him the checks because he never showed up to get them again yeah isn't it funny that's the the story from the the dealership that the guy that sold me my car just leaving his checks I just didn't care didn't even notice that's the funny part didn't even notice he was missing a paycheck call back like oh I think I left my no never came back to get it in the glove department in the glove department hey that is such a thing there's a glove department everywhere you go coals macy's chasing penny you're right it's a glove department walmart all right so answer the question on either twitter or facebook also take our poll we're asking you who's hotter be honest right now who's hotter leo or tay tay I mean the gap is narrowing que lo que papi welcome to miami 305 thank you tyree gill I like the espanol me gusta do espanol so let's take the poll let's answer the question let's do some qb news boom here's our layup nope nope sorry not there wait do you have to dump that or are you just gonna let my mistakes sail the air I love it when jay makes a mistake he hits what we call the dumb button so no one hears it when I make a mistake he just leaves it out there he doesn't care he feels like it's more authentic that way if I dumped that we would have dumped tyreek oh because we can't have a show without tyreek speaking spanish right it was amazing all right qb news is next here the pvp voices of baseball is a podcast about the art and craft of play-by-play and we're in the middle of an amazing season catch up on episodes with joe buck joe davis pat hughes and more and learn along with me matt spiegel how the job is done it's not just home run bryce harper and the phillies lead to really do it justice you gotta widen the lens what does this home run mean the pvp voices of baseball i bring you the people who bring you the game listen on the odyssey app or wherever you get your podcast on tbs sports radio you are listening to the after hours podcast hurry back to throw and it is is keep it himself and run it again inside the five into the end zone touchdown buffalo josh allen nine yard touchdown run the bills respond and then some it's time for qb news on after hours and we're once again pleased to remind you that we have a partner for qb news this portion of the show brought to you by wesley financial stuck in a timeshare and want out contact wesley financial group now and get a free timeshare exit information kit at wesley financial group dot com tua is salty i like it i think i like this salty tua he's a little bit annoyed a little bit offended by some comments made by a former nfl player who is now part of the espn family of analysts you may know ryan clark former nfl db and he now apparently he was joking but that's not how tua took it he said tua wasn't in the gym in the off season he might spend a lot of time in the tattoo parlor he was not at the dinner table eating what the nutritionist advised he also called tua thick and get this compared him to women working a strip club now i did not hear these comments i've only read them i don't get it if i'm tua i'm salty as well he probably knows more about me than i know about myself i mean i i don't know it's a little weird when other people are talking about other people and they're not that person so i know it's just just a little weird i come back i i like my background is like i i come from a samoan family like respect is everything but you know does get to a point where hey you know a little easy on that buddy because you know we i think we're we're pretty tough-minded people and uh if we need to get scrappy we can get scrappy too just saying did you hear him the whole time he's tapping either the table or the podium where the microphone is you that's generally a tick with people who are either nervous or are angry about something and that's kind of how they're channeling their emotion so you can tell that tua is annoyed and also offended and thinking about his samoan background where obviously a lot of body the body type is different right and so i think i would be upset by it too and i have no idea what ryan clark meant by the tattoo parlor or the strip club or anything like that i mean just flat out rude although roan ryan said on twitter he was joking he didn't mean it but come on man once it's out there and the quotes are out there you don't get to control the reaction you know you said it you better own it problem is jokes don't come across social media so people are reading this not just seeing it so good for tua and you know he's he's not done he's uh he's gonna take this to heart and respond all right i think we all worked hard throughout the off season um and i'm not someone to talk about myself the entire time but i mean it takes a lot you think you think i wanted to to build all this muscle like not to some extent like i i wanted to you know i want it to be a little lighter there's i know there's a mixture of things that people don't understand that people don't know about that are talked about that go behind the scenes so you know i'd appreciate if you kept my name out your mouth that's what i'd say i like this tua i like this tua a lot good for you all right staying in the afc east aaron rogers robert sala yep they are in lockstep about him playing in the preseason for the first time in years there was not much of a conversation with robert i think he was a little more nervous i might have said no but i was already leaning towards asking him to play so it was an easy conversation he and i it's having conversation you know ultimately he'll have his his thoughts too but for us as a an organization it's he's new i know he's been in the league very long time but uh just didn't want september 11th to be the first time that uh he stepped into into metlife stadium the giants and jets game whether it's preseason or regular season there's there's gonna be good turnouts gonna be a lot of anticipation and excitement in the building and just didn't want the first time that he goes out with his new team new colors new teammates new stadium didn't want it to be the first time september 11th being the first time i can understand that of course the question is are you nervous about rogers potentially getting hurt in the preseason you can't coach scared you can't play scared um you know you can you can slip out of your car and have something happen to you but uh you know we'll be knock on wood everyone will be fine you know you see some of the great ones out there you know ken city's playing their guys buffalo's playing their guys it's it's not uncommon um you know you could always play the hindsight game or the the fearful game but what's in the best interest for our team is to go out there play some football together and and prepare ourselves the best way we can for september 11th i agree with him you cannot play a professional sport and be worried about getting hurt however if the old dude did get dinged up in a preseason game it would feel like it was all for naught i mean there would be a major uproar a major uproar it's like having a player out there in garbage time and he gets hurt because he's not out there for anything that matters really it's after hours with amy lawrence here on cbs sports radio our qb news my coach's name's out of his mouth uh-huh that's two that we've heard on this qb news keep my name out your mouth dashawn watson he's actually ready for some preseason snaps as well as he takes over in week one this year for the cleveland browns i'm excited to get out there with the guys to kind of get my routine going uh to prep up for the season and just go out there and compete that's the ultimate goal is to compete and go out there and try to you know help the team whatever i can do to have you know successful drives and hit points on the board it's hard to say that you would be 100 in the nfl you know because every week is evolving you gotta add new pieces new wrinkles go against a new difference of scheme you know there's ups and downs so you know i'm not gonna sit up here and tell you guys give you a timeline where we'll be 100 i'm not sure where this offense will be 100 i'm not sure if any team in the nfl will actually be 100 and clicking because if you're doing that then you should be undefeated eh it's not just about you it's also about the other team on the field too it would be quite a turnaround if in fact the browns were sniffing undefeated we'll see i'm not sure how i feel about the browns not because i don't think they have some very talented players i just don't i don't know if if it's one of those games like crying wolf where you put confidence in the cleveland browns and then it blows up in your face it's why i'm not so confident in the new york jets either i'm just not sure how it's gonna go it is still the jets same thing with the chargers you gotta prove it first yeah you do gotta show me a little something something so dashaun watson and the browns it's gotta it's gotta fly to the radar type of field too just because of everything that's happened with them the last couple years all right let's turn our attention to a team that definitely does not fly under the radar and a quarterback who will never fly under the radar regardless of what he's doing patrick mahomes do you want to get hit in the preseason just to feel it again if it happens it happens um and obviously it's kind of a good thing because i mean offensive line is protecting uh really really well um so it might be the regular season hopefully i mean i go in with the mindset that i'm gonna take a hit here or there but the offensive line goes with the mindset they want they don't want me getting touched so it's hard to tell them to let someone through it's not it's not like i remember the titans or anything like that so if it happens it happens he cracks me up and he seems so at ease now just regardless of the microphone he's at ease yeah how do you tell an offensive line hey just let the guy come through so i can get hit that's the worst idea ever so you can't do that so good for him because there have been times where the o-line has not been a strength of the chiefs if it is they might be even better than last year yeah that's what mahomes needs more time oh my gosh right it's after hours with amy lawrence cbs sports radio biggest question mark around the chiefs right now is chris jones and he is at least flirted with the idea of holding out until week eight right until week eight because he's in a contract dispute with the team it would cost him a lot of money but he could return in week eight and not lose his year of service in the league and so this is the big question that a lot of the chiefs are fielding but specifically mahomes all right i know that stuff contract stuff is hard to talk about because everybody wants to make money for their entire family and and everything like that but i know how much chris chris loves the chiefs he loves being part of this organization um and so i just try to stay out of it and just tell chris that i love him and that whenever he does does come back he'll be welcome with open arms and we know that he's preparing himself so that whenever he does get back he can be that dominant player that he always has been if you heard me tell the story about manny ramirez last segment how he would leave his paychecks in the vehicles that he leased from a dealership in cleveland where i bought my car uh this is chris jones along those same lines he's willing to forfeit his weekly game checks until week eight which in his case would be over a million dollars over a million dollars for the defensive linemen because quote i can afford it could you imagine being that arrogant about a million dollars i can afford it okay but still it's not a wise business investment or a wise business choice i can afford it okay i can't even imagine it's monopoly money all right going from there to the nfc west where the major announcement on wednesday guess what it's not trey lance who will back up brought purdy this season if something happens to brock it's going to be sam darnold who beat out trey lance for the number two job and according to kyle shanahan it really was sam separating himself the last few practices so what then what's the issue with trey lance and the niners when you go back to three years ago you know we made a commitment you know looking at our roster and everything that we felt it was important with our roster going forward that eventually we were going to need a quarterback on a rookie deal if we wanted to keep this team and we made that decision back in after the 20 season and we weren't going to look back after that and trey was the guy we went with and we thought we would mix them in and ease them into some stuff the first year with a couple packages and stuff but we didn't believe anyone we would have taken would have beaten out jimmy that first year and that's kind of how it looked starting early in practice and trey did play a little bit earlier in the year but when he broke his finger it really kind of messed him up and took away that first year for him where he had to overcompensate on some things and it really kind of hurt him working through that and it affected him all the way into the off season going into year two but year two was the time that he did have the job we were giving it to him we were 100 committed and we were tailing everything for him and yeah he was working an uphill battle because of his finger stuff that he went through the first year and how that had a slowed down his process of just on where he thought he would be so he was a little behind on that but trey the type of guy he is a competitor what could he what he could do with his legs we still felt confident that he would get it as the year went and then he broke his ankle in the second game and when he did that it took away another year for him to develop and that was unfortunate you know so he missed two years to develop not to mention the covid year of his last year in college so now he'd gone three years without it and that opened up an opportunity for brock and you know we took brock in the seventh round and obviously we weren't thinking we'd be in this position but when brock got that opportunity he came in and he played at a very high level and um whoever would have been here with the way brock looked we were going to go with brock and that was the reality of it and we gave him a big chance to win that two spot this year um i think we were pretty lucky to get sam to come here on the contract that he did um just knowing how the rest of the league looks at sam and things like that but sam chose to come here and it was a very tough fight but in the long run uh sam ended up winning it i mean he essentially summarizes what has been a mess for trey lance with the niners it's been a mess partly because of injuries partly because he wasn't ready partly because brock purty grabbed the job and never gave it back i mean that's pro sports but it's a bit of a tragedy for trey lance and i do mean more tragedy in a literary sense all right one more from the nfc west jonathan gannan still not ready to name his starter for week one with the cardinals we need to name the starters we'll name the starters but he's doing a good job i thought he operated well um i think that uh he's getting more and more comfortable with what we're asking him to do he's obviously played a lot of football but i like where his game's trending all right that's my fault i did not let you know ahead of time although brownie points if you can figure out that he's talking about colt mccoy he's certainly not talking about kylar murray because kylar is not available yet but yes colt mccoy although i'm sorry if it's not colt mccoy what are you doing what you don't you don't know who else they have i feel like if it's not colt mccoy then it's it's a waste of time right because at least with colt and i'm not saying that he's whatever he's a guy that's going to go out there and light it up like patrick mahomes only that he has a lot of experience only that you're not starting clayton tune if you want any chance if you want any chance of sticking around until kylar murray gets back being relevant until kylar murray gets back david blau or clayton tune are your other options seriously let's let's not do that okay all right i got it attention please passengers fasten your seat listening to the after-hours podcast it is noise um sometimes you know you hear it you see it and sometimes it's hard to get away i get away from it but again it's it's your guys's job to have the opinion you know of our team you guys are all watching us everyone in the world gets to have their opinion this is after hours with amy lawrence the captain of the u.s women's national team who was eliminated before getting to the quarterfinals even of the latest women's world cup which was won by spania first time ever and actually it would have been a first time champion either spain or england so congratulations to spain champions of the world but where does that leave team usa and that's captain lindsay haran we know that there will be a major shift they're going to have a new coach but in addition no more megan rapinoe no more julie ertz maybe no more alex morgan don't know exactly what happens with her moving forward but it's yet another generation of women's soccer players that in in this late kind of run with this group this core group that's fallen short of the standard that's been set for the u.s women's national team and recently lindsay again the captain of team usa says she knew from the start that the team was playing tight now this comes from like it was a podcast i believe called recap and so she was with a couple of her teammates kind of going back to look at the women's world cup their performance coming up short and lindsay admits that she knew something was wrong the first game there was there were bits and pieces of joy but we still were at our best um and it was like looking at those three group stage games and we were just like you you felt it in the team you felt this like tense feeling and people were just not enjoying their football or they weren't enjoying individually playing and there's just so much going on in their head and you know i sat i think i had like a press conference and that was like the first thing that came to my mind was like there was no joy like i i haven't like truly enjoyed um like enough moments on the field where i like i came off the field and i was like oh i love that game like it's and that's hard to say say a lot in the world cup uh so so that's where i was like i was finding it very difficult to be like yeah we just need to find the joy again and like we're gonna be great like that's a very hard thing to do she was speaking to former teammates tobin heath and kristen press so they weren't part of this world cup but have been part of team usa in the past and it's a youtube channel known as re-ink and this was a show called the world cup show called recap it's after hours here on cbs sports radio lindsey also points to a failure to really get the rookies on board there were a lot of new players if you uh remember and you may not so i'll tell you we had stephen golf from down under he was in new zealand he covers everything soccer for the washington post and he was down under when he joined us our first ever guest from new zealand it was live it was pretty amazing and he talked about all the rookies now he said there's some of the best players in the world like sophia smith but it was their first ever world cup there's always like little things that you can um you can fix and you can look back on but i think individually i tried to do that as much as possible with each of the players like i i remember i like made it a point like i want to help so smith as much as possible in this tournament because i think she has a lot of pressure like on her back and i want to make sure she's in a good place and like some of the younger players are in a really good place because they're going to have massive roles and so it was like could i have done more to help those players because i don't think we got the absolute best out of out of some of them because of the way that we were set up and and some of the things that we did in the game but at this point it's like you're just like killing yourself did you catch that there at the end and that's what's become the highlight the headline of lindsey's comments to her former teammates is that because of the way we were set up meaning the formations meaning the coaching decisions we did not get the best out of our younger players and she goes on to say the team wasn't prepared and where does that fall at the end of the day it's like you're set up in a structure to to do this and like here's here's your opportunity individually like just go play within the structure but if you're not set up to you know like the game against sweden i don't think we were necessarily set up to play the way that we played so that was just us like finally coming together and being like this is what we're going to do and then it worked and then it's like okay keep doing it yeah like could that have happened earlier like maybe now if you remember the game against sweden they actually did dominate most of that game they just could not get the ball in the back of the net but they did dominate possession in many ways the game went or the match went to pks which is stinky on the world cup stage i hate that idea but lindsey actually points to hey we decided what formation we decided what worked best for us it certainly seems as though she is pointing to or at least alluding to the idea that the coaches had one idea and they changed it on the fly because it wasn't working and then it it looked so much better against sweden they kind of disregarded what the coaches had told them to do wow it's after hours with amy lawrence
