That's all I'm saying. Coming up in a few minutes, I'll tell you why it's such a significant date in my family, but also significant for me, which is why my brother and I spent quite a while on the phone last night. It was good to think about it and to mark the significant date, but also really excited that my family is going to be at my house for the weekend.
A lot of people have either Passover or Easter plans for that reason, and then going into next week. I'm on vacation next week. Not only do I start my class at Syracuse on Monday, my very first time, my syllabus is done.
Oh my gosh. I'm getting excited, though I'm super nervous because what if I get tongue tied the way that I did the very first time I ever went on the radio, which by the way was in Syracuse, New York. My first ever commercial radio update.
Are you ready for this? I was so proud. I had practiced for months. I was working on a sports radio show, a commercial radio show, not a student radio show, and they finally allowed me to do updates.
Afternoon drive, Syracuse, New York. My first day. I'd been interning for months, though.
Practicing, practicing. I was so excited. I was the only woman, of course, who was doing it.
Young woman at the time. And it comes time for the update. I hear the update music.
They turn my mic on. Two hosts are looking at me, and I forgot my name. I did not write down my name because who needs to write down their name? No one needs to write down their name. You know your name?
Nope. Couldn't remember my name. I was petrified.
I was so petrified that I was completely paralyzed. So I stare at the paper. My name's not there. I don't know why I was staring at the paper.
My name's not there. I look up, and one of the hosts is doing the let's go, let's go, let's go sign. The other guy's throwing his arms over the air like, what the heck is wrong with you? Talk. And the guy's like, go, go, go.
Doing the circular motion. Let's go. So I stare at him for a second, finally figure out how to make the mouth move again, and just went without the name. Nobody needs to know who I am at this point. Anyway, oh gosh, I'm so glad there's no tape of that. Well, maybe there is in this radio station's archives, but it'll never be found. There's no tape of it, but it forever lives on in my memory every time the microphone goes on. So that happened in Syracuse, New York.
I did find out, by the way, this is really cool. Though I will be on vacation next week and not doing the show next Monday night, the following three weeks after that, Syracuse is giving me a studio on campus, so I don't even have to go to a radio station. I will be in more than likely a recording studio, a closet is what we used to call them when I was there, but they have world-class facilities because it's a world-class broadcasting school.
And so as I spoke to the sports media director on Wednesday, she said to me, oh yeah, don't worry about it. We have a facilities guy. He'll set you up. He'll give you a key. So I'm actually going to be doing my shows from the campus of Syracuse University, which is where I got my start.
Full circle. Oh yeah, really cool. So there'll probably be some moments where I'll have to pinch myself, but I promise you, I will not forget my name. I'm not going to forget my name now either. It's after hours here on CBS Sports Radio, toll-free line 855-212-4227. And then on Facebook, named after the show, super easy.
Also on Twitter, ALawRadio. They're asking you, is the impossible to resist clickbait? And some of your answers are cracking me up. I love how honest you're being, or maybe you're lying, but you think it's funny.
So there's that too. All right, let's, let's continue with Cam Newton for a couple of minutes here, and then we'll get to your call, Mike in Fort Lauderdale. So according to Cam, even though he believes that there are not 32 starting quarterbacks better than him in the NFL, that's his personal opinion. I think it's great that he still believes in himself. He is willing to take a job as a backup. And instead of picking, I think this is significant, instead of picking teams that he believes either are winners or have a system that fits him, he picks guys with whom he's familiar, as in starting quarterbacks, with whom he has a relationship, maybe a camp, maybe a throwing program, whatever it is, he lists Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, currently in Baltimore, Justin Fields, Tua Tango Veloa, and Malik Willis, which I thought was really interesting. He'd be willing to, what, how would that work? You're going to back up Malik Willis, but Malik Willis is a backup, so are you backing up the backup? Mike, I don't know how that's going to work out, but. I just think he wants to play with his buddies.
True. It's like the NBA where everyone plays with his BFF. Okay, so we're going to move on with Cam Newton now, and he also has, it sounds like a very altruistic opportunity, and he wants to take this seriously, the chance to share his wisdom and knowledge. I would say there's three rookie quarterbacks that I would love or enjoy to groom.
Any of these rookie quarterbacks, CJ Stroud, Bryce Jones, and Anthony Ricci, any one of those guys, I will be happy to back those guys up. Number seven, Jalen Hurts, number eight would be Aaron Rodgers, number nine would be Josh Allen, and number ten would be Sam Howell, another C1N alumna. He just essentially has mentioned ten teams, although I don't know about Aaron Rodgers because Rodgers doesn't, I mean he has a team right now, there's no way the Packers are bringing in Cam Newton, so I assume he's thinking that Rodgers will end up with the Jets.
He mentions Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, he mentions Sam Howell, who right now at least is QB1 for the Washington commanders. Why don't we just run the gamut and mention them all. But did I miss six? Because he jumped to seven, eight, and nine. Did I miss number six? Jay, did you cut out number six? Okay, so Jay was doing a little editing there because we wanted to make sure we could give you the total package with Cam.
And he's willing to be a mentor. So in saying the names of the young quarterbacks like CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson, there's three more teams that he'd be willing to go to as a backup. So by my last count, he has given us thirteen teams, one through ten, and then CJ and Anthony. Plus there was another quarterback, another rookie that I didn't, I didn't, what? What, Jay? Bryce?
Oh, he did say Bryce, yes. Okay, so he has now given us three rookie quarterbacks and at least eight quarterbacks who are already in the NFL. He's just running the gamut, just giving us all the teams. He's just putting it out there so these general managers, who I'm sure will find this video very entertaining, they're just knowing that he's willing to be a backup and willing to be a teacher anywhere.
He just wants to get it out there that he's willing to play second fiddle. When you think about the list, it's really to the point. Now, some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that the franchise is probably okay with, and that's fine. I'm just voicing my opinion and I'm just getting the narrative out.
When you think about the list, it's really to the point. Now, some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that the franchise is probably okay with, and that's fine. I'm just voicing my opinion and I'm just getting the narrative out. No, I love when Cam voices his opinion. In what narrative or what world has he forgotten what the NFL is all about where players have almost zero power?
That's really funny. It's like he forgot what it was like when he was in the NFL. You don't get to pick your backup.
In fact, if you did allow starting quarterbacks to pick their backups, they might A, pick guys that they really like, but B, they might pick guys who suck because they don't want to lose their jobs. Come on, man. I'm not 32.
I'm not 32. I admire Cam for sticking to this. This is on Cam Newton's YouTube channel, and according to Jay, no, I didn't see it. I've heard it.
I haven't seen it. He was smoking some candy. He's partaking in something. He's partaking in something.
It's legal in a lot of places. I don't know where Cam is, well, if we think it's what we think it was, but I just think it's humorous that he's essentially listed 15 teams or 15 quarterbacks that he would like to back up. Like they're a shooting guard, point guard tandem. Yeah, it's not even really the teams. It's the guys that he listed.
So yeah, all right. He's just throwing it out there. His opinion.
855-212-4227. Mike is listening in Fort Lauderdale. Mike, what do you think about Cam wanting to be a backup to Tua?
I would take him in a second. I read something in the paper the other day, and I don't read the paper a lot. As far as the sports pages, I have my own opinions about things. I don't listen to a lot of stuff. I do love your show, though.
Thank you. And the guy was saying how we got to sign Teddy Bridgewater, and I thought right away, why do I want to jump and sign Teddy Bridgewater? Whenever he come in to help us, he didn't do good. He didn't look very good at all any time. I would take either one of them guys and let Teddy go find another job in a second.
I'm just sorry. I have no faith in him anymore. When we first got him, I thought he could still play, but after watching him go on the field with the offensive team we got, and I'm moving the ball, I just didn't understand it.
I couldn't understand it. Okay, so then you would take Cam over Teddy is what you're saying. I thought Teddy was a free agent, is he not? Yeah, yeah, but the guy in the paper said, oh, we got to be sure we sign him. And I was like, the first thing I thought was, why do I want to rush and sign this guy? Because he didn't help us in the first place, you know?
I would take Cam or the other person too. I'd take either one of them over Teddy, because he disappointed me so much. I really thought he could still play. And whenever we put him in the game, we never moved the ball. I'm so sorry that you were disappointed by Teddy Bridgewater. Yeah, yeah, but hey, that happens. I know football, a lot of times people still think they can play and you put them on the field and they get too old, they slow down, they don't move as good. The game goes so fast, you know, that everything's moving so fast. Just to clarify though, Teddy may think he can play, but obviously the Dolphins still thought he could play otherwise.
It doesn't matter. I might think I can throw a spiral, but if a team doesn't give me a job. So the Dolphins thought he could play. They definitely did, but so did I too. That's what I mean. I hope they were watching the same games this year and not rush to sign them.
That's what I'm saying. I think we could look around. I think we could do better. You know who I really wanted to get was the guy that wanted to Tampa. I wanted to give him a shot to back him up. You wanted Baker Mayfield? I thought he would be.
He's a young guy. I thought maybe if we put him behind Teddy in that offensive system. Behind Teddy?
No, behind, you know what I mean, behind the tool. I still thought maybe, I wanted to see him just back up. I thought maybe if he backed up and looked at it from a different perspective, looked at the bench, I thought maybe he could still play when we needed him.
But he went to Tampa Bay, so I'll keep an eye on him. He did. Actually, I'm not sure if you know this, but the scuttlebutt about Bridgewater is that he's likely to sign with the Ravens. No, I'd love that. I didn't hear that, but I'd love that.
That's what is expected. I don't know if it will happen. I don't think it's happened yet, but there's a lot of scuttle that he may end up with. You're making me happy already. What can I say? You know, I don't hear a lot of scuttle stuff. I like to wait and see what happens, but you know, I think that's a good idea.
Let him sign there. And you know what else? Nobody ever mentioned this. I got to mention this, but the Baltimore Ravens, they're a running team. They've been a running team for as long as I can remember. That's why they have trouble with this quarterback because he can throw the ball good and he's a good quarterback and they don't know what to do with them because they're a running team. They always have ran the ball.
You know that if you watch them over the years. Okay, but Joe Flacco, not a running quarterback. So they for a while had a system in which they threw the football.
It was around him, but he couldn't move. Like you said, he was a pocket passer and then they got this guy that runs like a deer and he can throw the ball and they're having trouble figuring out what to do with them. You mean going back to his MVP season, they were having trouble figuring out what to do with them? Well, back then he wasn't getting hurt as much and I always thought he could play.
I still think he could play really good and I think he should stay there, but I just feel like they're unsure because one time they could use him this way. I thought he ran way too much sometimes too because you can get hurt and that's what happened at the end of the year. And you know at the end of the year, that's when you need you guys on the field.
You can't have them getting hurt at the end of the year, but you can help when you get hurt. So you would take Cam as the point of this? You would take Cam as to his back up?
Oh, definitely. I'm hoping Teddy leaves. I would take Cam without a doubt, without even thinking about it just because he's got so much experience and maybe Tua can stay healthy. I'm hoping for the best for Tua. Me too. I don't want to see him get hurt as much as he did.
Me too. I already heard we're trying to make some moves on the offensive line like every team does every year. I love how you say that, the offensive line. Yeah, the offensive line. The offensive line.
You got to fix it up every year. Every team got to fix the offensive line. The offensive line. Not the offensive line, but the offensive line. It's an offensive line. Don't honor any more offensive lines. It's very offensive.
It's an offensive offensive line. Yes. Yup. I like that. Sometimes it gets that way, but you know what I mean. I do. And we love your show. Have a great vacation. Thank you, Mike. And take care. It's good to talk to you.
I appreciate it. That's it. From now on, I'm calling it the offensive line. Except I can't because the second I start doing that, people who didn't hear this phone call are going to be like, you dumbass. Stop calling it the offensive line.
But see, I can't even really do it. I have to think about it to say it. The offensive line.
Could you imagine? They'll come back with offensive lines. When we have Ross Tucker. Ross Tucker's a former NFL offensive lineman. Whenever he comes on the show before the end of April, before the draft, I'm going to say, I'm going to introduce him as former NFL offensive lineman. He's quite offensive. Mean guy.
The mean dude. Just to go back to what I was saying about Teddy Bridgewater, he has started 65 games in the NFL. He was the Denver Broncos starter two years ago and actually threw a career-high 18 touchdown passes. Of course, the offense was a mess.
They still didn't make the playoffs. But he did actually throw 18 touchdown passes. For the Dolphins, he played in five games last year, started two of them. And this is because of two of his concussion issues, of course. Until they went to, well, he got hurt too, right? And then Skylar Thompson ended up having to play a bunch.
But it was because Teddy got hurt. The report coming out of, I think it's Bleacher Report, was Christopher Knox. And he was saying that because the Ravens are looking for a veteran backup, and Teddy Bridgewater is the best one still available, that it stands to reason that they will likely bring him in as opposed to Tyler Huntley, who was a pro bowler just a few months ago, thank you very much. He's a restricted free agent, but they have been looking around. So that's kind of how Christopher Knox reported it. He believes that Bridgewater will sign with the Ravens, but take it with a brain of salt.
Take it with a brain of salt, because you don't actually know what's going to happen. All right, coming up. First of all, well, not first of all, we have an update on Bill Self's health. Be careful how you say that. Bill Self and his health, if you remember, he was away from the Jayhawks as they were in the Big 12 tournament and then on into the NCAA tournament. He was with the team, but he was not on the sidelines. So that's something that's important.
It's good to hear from him. In addition, the Masters tees off in under four hours. And the chairman of Augusta National, he was telling us why. Why Greg Norman, even as a past champion, is not invited back to the Masters. So there's still some drama there between Liv and PGA.
If you haven't noticed the tee times, none of the Liv guys are paired with the PGA stars. So he has still plenty of drama. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio.
You are listening to the After Hours Podcast. He's doing good. It's all day today and how he feels and doctors and stuff. But he's doing well. He's been able to spend quite a bit of time with the guys and practice and that type of stuff. So he's doing good.
This is After Hours with Amy Lawrence. That is the voice of Bill Self's assistant head coach, Norm Roberts, who took over coaching the team, not only at the beginning of the year when Self was suspended. You may remember that.
It's been a while. But it was the start of the season because of NCAA violations that he was suspended. And so Norm coached the Jayhawks going back to the start of the year. But he also was coaching the team while Bill Self was in the hospital.
And it was a health scare. We had not heard a whole lot of details, only that he had to be away from the team, that it was a health issue. And so he missed the Big 12 tournament, but the Jayhawks ran the table in the tourney. He ended up being with the team for the NCAA games, though he was not on the sidelines. So he was at practice.
I remember hearing him make a joke about how he's never sat down so much in practice. But he was with the team. He just didn't go out there on the sidelines and coach. I think the idea was that he would have returned to coach the team had they made it to the Sweet 16.
But they did not. The Jayhawks were upset in the second round by Arkansas. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. Now Bill Self is 60. And for the first time since March 8th.
So it's been almost a month now since the first time since March 8th. And I remember we we use that audio on the air. He spoke to reporters. And he was kind of talking about his health a little bit, giving us an update so we would know how he's doing.
And I appreciate this. I think not only does the college basketball world want to know, but there's a lot of people that care about Bill Self. He's been around for a long time. And so to hear an update on his health and a return potentially to the Jayhawks is, I mean, that's good to know. It's good because people are worried about him. I think the last several weeks I've been able to reflect on a lot of things.
OK. The one thing I can tell you without question, I miss my job. I love my job and I want to do my job for a long time. That's what is positive. Now, for me to be as effective doing that, I think I have to, you know, wake up a little bit and maybe do some things from from a lifestyle standpoint, a personal habit standpoint that I've been very, very, very inconsistent with my entire adult life. So and I said that jokingly earlier. You know, can you imagine a doctor telling you you need to lose weight, eat right and exercise, you know, and and I've been told that a long time, but I'm taking that serious first time I probably have in my life. So so but to answer your question, all this did from a job standpoint was reconfirm how much I love doing what I do.
Well, there's so much good news there that makes me so happy. He sounds as though he's much better. He obviously has had a come to Jesus moment or we'll just say one of those. Those wake up calls where you realize something has to change.
And I dare say the number of people out there listening right now, I've had one of these. OK, I was I've always been an athlete. I played five sports when I was in high school. I played college basketball. I run half marathons. But it was about three years ago when I was seeing my doctor for an annual checkup. And and we had a conversation about aim. You need to lose some weight. It was it was one of those moments where I I just never thought I would hear that.
But I did. I spent the next year and a half losing almost 30 pounds and now feel much better. I know that I'm in good shape, still still running, still working out on a regular basis, added yoga to my routine. I eat very healthy. I do love my desserts, but I only eat desserts after I exercise. And so I've made some lifestyle changes myself.
Maybe people don't even notice them, but I notice them and it makes a difference. Here's Bill Self, who is not unlike many 60 year olds, whether male or female, not unlike many 60 year olds who have had this wake up call where they realize. And it doesn't have to necessarily happen at that age.
For me, it was in it was it was in my 40s. So I think it's important that he's listening because you don't want to be too stubborn and not listen to what's happening, not recognize the warning signs. Our physical bodies are created that they will give us warning signs. Not always. I mean, there are these stories you hear about people who have no idea that they're sick, no idea that anything's wrong. They feel extremely healthy.
They look good. And then something goes wrong with their heart or or another complication. But very often our bodies give us distinct warning signs that something is wrong. Something's not operating. Something's not lining up.
Something's not working the way that it's supposed to. And so here is his body giving him warning signs. And this is what was happening. They were getting ready for their last shoot around before the conference tournament.
So before the big 12 tourney. And he had chest tightness, which, oh, you want to talk about warning sign. He was worried about his balance. So he had two stents. Again, very common procedure these days for people with their hearts to help treat blocked arteries. My grandmother had it.
I mean, I've got so many people in my family who have had this procedure. And so now he says he's had a wake up call. I'm exercising almost daily.
They told me I need to improve my diet and exercise. My energy level is back to where it was. And I feel fine. But I also love that he said. It's renewed my passion for coaching.
It's reminded me of of what I love, what matters to me. And I'm not going to retire anytime soon. So that's all great news. I just value the fact that Bill Self is a superstar. He's a rock star in that industry. And he's very conscientious. Obviously, he's been with Kansas for a long time, not his entire career, but he's been with Kansas for a long time.
And it would it would stink if he was forced to retire because of health issues. So I'm really glad that he is taking the advice of doctors. And again, I think our bodies are very. They're they're very intricate. All the systems work together in such a particular way, but they're created that there are often warning signs. So please, please, please. If you're in that situation, listen to the warning signs. Doctors are your friends.
They're not always trying to steal money from you. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence, CBS Sports Radio. I just want to acknowledge this incredible day for my family. First of all, my younger niece. Her birthday is today. Her name is Lauren.
And she this is so cute. She graduated from college in December, so she graduated a semester early. She had already had a job offer for some reason.
Don't ask me why. Her very first job is completely online. Oh, my gosh. Are you kidding me? Now, she would be OK to go into an office, but for whatever reason, she's doing her entire job remotely.
That's the decision they made. But I'm very proud of her. She works in business information technologies. She's working on website design.
She actually makes presentation to clients, presentations to clients. And my niece, Lauren, doesn't get out of her comfort zone very easily. She's one of those young people who is fine, happy, dandy to stay in her routine all the time in her little box with her same friends and her same routine and her same everything.
I'm so, so, so proud of her when she steps out of her comfort zone because it's a big deal for her and she attacks a new challenge. So on her birthday, this is kind of interesting. She's not yet met her boss or any of her co-workers in person, even though she's had this job now for two and a half months.
She's only seen them. She's actually going to the office today on her birthday and will work eight hours in an actual office with co-workers. And I know she's nervous. She's going to drive her. It's her first commute. It's her first commute. So I'm really proud of her. She has to be it's a she can move to an office just outside of D.C. And so I'm so, so, so excited. But she did say, because I have to work all day in an office, we're not going out for our Korean barbecue dinner until later on.
So that was her choice. She chose the family is doing Korean barbecue that's in northern Virginia. But then the family will be arriving at my house in New Jersey for Easter weekend. My other niece has a birthday on Sunday. And so it's birthday weekend in the family. But in addition to it being a birthday weekend for my two nieces, it's also Thursday. April six is also my Grammy Helen's birthday.
And this time last year, my brother and I were a couple hours away from waking up at an Airbnb in the Appleton, Wisconsin area. And celebrating with not just my grandmother, who turned 100 on this day last year, but we also were celebrating with three of her four kids and other family members. I wrote a blog post about that day and I will probably share it on this morning because it was. A day that I'll never forget. It was a day that will only happen once in my lifetime, more than likely. I would love it if my mom got to 100.
But, you know, that's not the norm. And so I just think back, I can't believe it was a year ago. I can't believe it was a year ago. And I miss her like I'm sure many of you understand. I miss her like there is a hole in my heart. It was April 10th of last year, the last time I saw her in person.
We did Skype a couple of times before she passed away. But it was an occasion of great joy. My grandmother had been really anxious about the 100th birthday.
And I know this sounds a little crazy, but I I believe it's true. Betty White had passed away 17 days or 10 days before her 100th birthday. My my grandmother's best friend from first grade had passed away a few days before her 100th birthday. So my grandmother was, I think, highly stressed about that. Plus, there was so much attention around it and people were traveling in. I was a little nervous that she wasn't actually going to enjoy it.
But the day itself was amazing. The photos that they took at her assisted living facility, I cherish them. I bought a bunch of them, of course, not knowing that it would be the last time that there would be photos of her. So I'm missing her on this morning so terribly, so terribly. It does help me to talk about her.
I don't get a chance to talk about her much anymore. And so I'm thinking of her today because it was a year ago that we got to celebrate her 100th birthday and celebrate her. And I got to hug her and hold her hand. And I was the one that transported her to her 100th birthday party, which was a huge honor and a privilege for me. And so it is Lauren's birthday.
My sweet girl Lauren, she turns 22 today. But a lot of my thoughts, since my family will be around tomorrow, a lot of my thoughts on this Thursday, April 6th, are about my incredible Grammy Helen, my favorite superhero of all time. And how much I wish I could talk to her. There are only a bazillion things that I would tell her, only a bazillion stories that I would tell her. Like I said, I know many of you understand we all lose people that we love. I'm grateful that I had her for so long.
But gosh, it's the first time in my life that this day is one that I won't get to share with her in some capacity. So I definitely miss her. It's After Hours with Amy Lawrence here on CBS Sports Radio. Thanks so much for hanging out with us. You can find us on Twitter, After Hours, CBS or on our Facebook page. You are listening to the After Hours podcast.
Here on After Hours, we like you as much as you like us. Hi, Amy. How are you? I'm great. Good, good.
First time caller. Cool. Love your show. Thank you.
Wow. Thank you so much, Amy, for getting me on. You are the best. I think you're brilliant. Hi, Amy. I love your show. I listen to you on the way home.
American woman. I love that. Thank you so much, Amy. I'm a huge fan of you. I've been listening to you for so long. I listen to you all the time when I'm on my way home from work. Hey, Amy.
First time caller. Love, love, love your show. You get my money started off every day on my way to work. Awesome. How you doing, Amy? Great. You're a well-kept secret. You do an outstanding job and I'm a big fan of yours. I appreciate that.
This is After Hours with Amy Lawrence. Have you noticed that there's very little about Aaron Rodgers these days? It's actually kind of nice. I feel as though we're having a vacation from Aaron Rodgers. Like, he's taking vacations from us.
Totally fine with me. The funny part is, though, and I don't know if producer Jay took the bait, but earlier when we got on the air, this goes back now almost three hours ago, I looked over as I opened up Twitter and, wouldn't you know, Aaron Rodgers was trending. I refused. In fact, I forbid producer Jay to open it up and add to the trend, add to the clickbait.
I don't know if he did it or not. But thus was born our clickbait question tonight, which is what online content, what online clickbait can you absolutely not resist? You find that impossible to resist.
My server apparently thinks I love Gisele Bunchton because all I do is have stories about Gisele every single day on my laptop at home. But I will say what's impossible for me to resist? Animal videos. I can't help it. I watch every single animal video that comes to me. And sometimes they're worth the effort. Sometimes they're not.
But there was this one just this week. I couldn't help it. I watched all the way through, waiting, waiting. A dog.
Now, here's the thing is we don't know if it's actually true. A dog who'd been sleeping outside for three years on the streets because he had lost his way and didn't know how to get home. And his owner found him after three years of looking for him and the dog went ballistic. So the dog sleeping in like a flower bed stands up. Here's his owner's voice.
It's in German, I think. Here's his owner's voice. Just like he just loses it. Howling, squeaking, whining, jumping on his owner. I mean, it was amazing.
So I have no idea of knowing because it was in German whether or not it was actually true. But those are the kinds of animal videos I can't resist. Fiona, our favorite hippo at the Cincinnati Zoo eating watermelon.
I can watch that video a bazillion times. Anything to do with animals. Baby animals. Oh, my gosh. The bull. Oh, yeah.
The bull pounding the dummy in Pamplona. Yeah, we love animal videos here on the show. So, yes, my clickbait very often is animal videos.
Some of you are going sports with your clickbait, which I think is interesting. Let's talk to Sam, who's in Baltimore. Sam, welcome to After Hours CBS Sports Radio. Hi, Amy. How are you doing? I'm good.
Thank you. I just want to talk about Lamar Jackson. I'm a Baltimore Ravens fan. You know, in our division, he's the worst passer.
Burrow is above everybody. Pickett looks like he's going to be a passer. Watson passed for over 15000 yards in his first three seasons before his troubles began. If he comes back and passes like he has in the past, Lamar doesn't.
We're probably a fourth place team unless he can figure out how to pass as good as any of these guys or even get close to them. Yet he's asking for all this money. On top of that, he keeps telling us how injured he is. Why would anybody want to offer him a contract when we don't know whether he can even run the way he used to? Because he's got an injured right ankle and an injured left knee. Just in January, he was bragging about how he couldn't even run on that knee and couldn't cut on it. I don't know why he's doing that, but yet this makes me wonder why teams... Well, it doesn't make me wonder why teams aren't offering him a job or a big contract.
Do you think that sounds about right? I actually think it's a great point about the injury. Why would you be touting your injuries instead of masking them a little bit? But let's hope that at this point now in early April, whether he had a procedure, whether he hasn't, that the time off has gotten him back to 100%. Lamar is an incredible athlete. We all know that.
I believe he's a better passer than what most people give him credit for. Now think about last year. There were no receivers on the Ravens roster who had more than two years of experience. So there's a bit of a disconnect there. They obviously had gotten stale in the Greg Roman offense.
So there are other factors that were part of it. I do agree with you that in that division, it's a little bit like the AFC West. If you don't have a really strong quarterback, you are a sitting duck. So you do not want to go into this upcoming season without having that quarterback situation settled. I don't think the Ravens are going to cave. If they were going to cave, they would have caved by now on giving him a fully guaranteed contract. It sounds like no one else is going to do that either around the NFL unless the team gets really desperate. I still say the most likely scenario is that he returns to Baltimore and that there's a bit of a reprieve there.
I don't know though. You know, Sam, they've said all along, and John Harbaugh continues to say it even though John Harbaugh doesn't have to worry about making the decision. He said all along they want Lamar as their quarterback. He's been very complimentary of Lamar.
But there's clearly a line drawn in the sand and the Ravens are not prepared to move any further past that line. And Lamar's not handled his business well. I think the emotion and the stress has gotten to him.
So the last few weeks he's kind of put stuff out there they shouldn't have. And so that doesn't really help his case either. So I think you make a good point about the injuries not helping his case. But also just the way that he's gotten a little too emotional over it, which is where the agent comes in, right?
Right. Well, we here in Baltimore think what he's going to do is he's going to sign for the 32 million. But then this summer he's going to say, I need to have knee surgery. So he's not going to play for us that year. He's probably going to get 32 million in an insurance policy and we're going to be out. So, you know, we just don't trust him.
Interesting. It's sad to say because he's given us a lot of good play here. But then again, we didn't win big.
We never got very far. So you believe that Lamar would rather not play? Because I kind of feel like most of these guys, they recognize they have a limited window to play and they want to play versus not play.
Well, that's one thing I like to think. I'd like to think he needs to come back, make 32 million with us and prove that he can not only run, but he can throw. I mean, he has something that he doesn't take advantage of. If he starts to run and the linebackers come up, there's people open because the linebackers aren't covering them.
And yet he rarely ever makes that type of a throw. And that would really seal the deal for him. But I don't know whether he can't transition or whether he thinks he's so good he's going to get past.
And it's why we don't get very far in the playoffs. So, you know, I'm hoping that he plays for us this year and proves that he's what he is and then we give him the big contract. But we'll wait and see what happens. I would agree with that. I would say best case scenario, absolutely, Sam, is that the Ravens, I think they bring him back.
It's still the best fit. John Harbaugh is a huge fan of Lamar's. He plays like he did in his MVP season. Maybe doesn't lead the NFL, but has a lights out year because he's motivated. He recognizes that if he wants to get the contract that he believes he deserves, he's going to have to have a really incredible season, including the durability. He needs to be durable.
He needs to be out there when the Ravens need him most. And that is the end of the season. Yep. All right, sir. Let's see if it works out that way.
Yes. Take care. I appreciate your phone call in Baltimore. That brings us to the top of our third hour. We've got one hour to go. Now, coming up about, oh, we'll call it 40 minutes from now, we're going to head to the Masters because we've got a live guest who will join us from Augusta National. Now that we are three hours away from the first tee times, round one, that's if the weather holds. There could be some weather complications, so we'll get the latest from the scene coming up 40 minutes from now. We'll be right back for hours with Amy Lawrence, CBS Sports Radio.
