The Beatitudes are a series of tests of true discipleship, revealing the character and conduct of the true Christian. Jesus teaches that blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy, and that mercy is compassion in action, showing pity and taking action to alleviate suffering. He also teaches that blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God, and that purity of heart includes both sincerity and righteousness, achieved through the act of regeneration and the process of sanctification. Finally, Jesus teaches that blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God, and that peacemaking requires a new view of self, others, and the world, resulting in a ministry of reconciliation through the gospel, intercessory prayer, and self-sacrifice.
