Iceland's strategic location made it difficult to remain neutral during the events of World War II. The island nation's population was small, and its economy was hit hard during the Great Depression. Britain imposed export controls on Icelandic exports to Germany, further depressing the economy. The British offered assistance and sought to make Iceland an ally, but the Icelandic government chose to remain neutral, disallowing visits by military vessels and aircraft of the belligerents. The German invasion of Denmark and Norway demonstrated that Hitler did not respect neutrality, and Britain considered invading Iceland to prevent a German invasion. The British eventually occupied Iceland, and the US took over the occupation in 1941. The occupation had a significant impact on Iceland's economy and culture, with the US and Britain building infrastructure and bases on the island. [... more]

However, individuals like Ann Hutchinson and Roger Williams challenged the orthodoxy of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, advocating for religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Meanwhile, other colonies like Pennsylvania and Georgia were founded on different principles, such as the Quakers' rejection of formal services and the British humanitarians' goal of creating a colony for debtors. Winston Churchill's life was marked by numerous brushes with death, yet he continued to show extraordinary courage and leadership. Born in New York City to a British mother, Churchill grew up at the apex of Victorian society, but his relationship with his parents was difficult. He was willing to show emotion, a trait uncommon among his peers, and this allowed him to connect with the British people. Churchill's early warning system against Adolf Hitler and the Nazis was partly due to his philo-Semitism and his experience with fanaticism. He never changed his warning, even when ridiculed in the press and attacked by his own party members, and this self-belief was a key aspect of his career. Churchill's physical and moral courage were evident throughout his life, including his travels during the Second World War, where he traveled 110,000 miles outside the UK, often within the radius of the Luftwaffe.
