The first college in America, Harvard University, was established in 1636 by the Massachusetts Bay colony. The school was founded by a group of Puritans who sought to create a place of learning where students could study the Bible and prepare for Christian service. John Harvard, a young clergyman from England, bequeathed half of his property and library to the new college, which was named in his honor.
