What's wrong with your ears? Here is your college football fix only on the Zach Gelb show. 65 days away until the University of Washington kicks off its season against Boise State last year in the debut season for Kalen DeBoer. The Huskies did have an 11-2 record.

They did win the Alamo Bowl up against Texas and now joining us is the second year coach of the Washington Huskies and that of course is Kalen DeBoer. Coach always great to catch up with you. Appreciate the time. How you been? Yeah, I'm good.

Thanks for having me on today. So when you look back at year one I never know what to expect when a coach goes to a new school. Why when you look back on it was the university a good fit for you and you were a good fit for them with the impressive season you had?

Yeah, no I mean that's a probably a question that can give you a lot of answers to but from my end I'm just knowing what this program's all about. There's just so much tradition and history and you know there's a lot of support and you know here in Seattle you know you have a few pro teams but from a college standpoint I mean this is the show in town and you know just you can see it on every Saturday with the way the fans pack the stadium. You know they love the dogs and there's just you know again good strong foundation to build on and even though it was a season the year before that before we got here that wasn't maybe one of the greatest you know the seeing who was here and who was returning we had a pretty good feeling it would be a pretty good season we'd have a chance here at the end. Were you at all surprised how successful it was year one when you look back at it? You know yeah I think you know you don't know exactly what you got but I saw the mindset of the guys in fall camp probably before that this summer just where every day you know the mindset was you know ahead in the right direction you could see the development of the guys and the buy-in physically they were getting bigger as well and faster and once we got in the season and you saw them executing you know you knew that hey we can win every game on our schedule you know I think there was a piece too we weren't far enough along where you couldn't say that we couldn't possibly lose every game a year ago you know you just had to come out and play really good football and as again the buy-in became greater and greater our guys preparation each and every week was at an extremely high level and they produced and had a lot of fun and we just wanted that season to continue on and you know I think you know having everyone playing the bowl game I think just shows how much you know these guys really were excited about you know playing football each and every Saturday. Kaitlyn DeBoer here with us everywhere you've gone as a coach Sioux Falls Fresno State and Washington so far you've had success what did you learn though in this journey last year about yourself that maybe was a little bit different than the other two stops? That's a good question I think you know you know that I learned at a couple different places along the way you know you don't have to sit back and wait not that you're going to do a complete overhaul but you within the program have confidence that in one year you can make some major improvements I kind of always go back to my Fresno State opportunity there both times uh one coming as a coordinator and they were one and eleven before we got there we went ten and four and then the second time coming back it was a four and eight season before we got there and you know we went uh we went um uh twelve and twelve and two really or eleven what was it twelve and two that year yeah um excuse me we were nine and three that year you know so um a lot of a lot of uh great things that uh happened uh during the very next year coming off of seasons where you know maybe the expectations weren't as high coming in. Your teams Kaitlyn DeBoer have always got better I just wonder when you had so much success as you did in year one what has been the vibe around your team because sometimes when you have a team that has success complacency sets in or that success just breeds those guys to be more motivated than ever?

Yeah I think there we use the word starving you know just uh there's a starving mindset still that exists and I just keep reminding them you know we didn't win the conference championship last year you know we didn't make it to a new year six bowl game um so you know there's uh there's a lot yet uh that uh they have his goals that they haven't accomplished and so just reminding them of that and we we have just a lot of really good down to earth guys that uh you realize that it comes through that the success comes through hard work and um you know they're just putting their head down and grinding each and every day um I don't feel like the complacency thing is uh a part of who we are it wasn't last year as the season was going um they they know that you know August uh we got to be better than we are today you know and as we go through the season each and every day each and every week we got to get better so um that's the formula for our success and what got us to this point right now the belief and trust we have and have a great season this fall um that's what's going to carry us on um throughout this uh this fall as well. Kaitlyn DeBoer when you look back and you celebrated last season at the team banquet I know your quarterback had a nice little surprise for you guys relive that moment for me. Yeah it was uh the end of the banquet and we've given out all our awards and kind of saying our final uh you know kind of giving our little highlight film at the end and people sitting back and um you know then I don't know if Mike said something a little bit I got something to show you uh or someone presented actually Tony Casacona our play-by-play said you know there's one more video we want to show and Mike had put something together with our uh head of creative uh and it was awesome you know you can kind of tell right away um just by the tone of it that it was probably good news that we were going to be hearing um and so it was pretty exciting seeing Mike um you know put that together and you tell it meant a lot to him and then the players as well just uh really rallying around him and you know uh loving that he's here first of all and then that he's coming back uh just uh kept the excitement going through December into the bowl game of course carried over this year. He had a great season Michael Penix Jr and that's probably an understatement with 31 touchdowns and cleared over 4,600 yards were you surprised when he said he was coming back or did you kind of expect that? I think there was enough conversations uh there in those weeks prior um to where there was a possibility he was coming back just he was having too much fun I think he else understood that another year of growth and development uh you know would help his opportunities at the end with the NFL and the draft and so um you know I think we've you know he and we all vetted out the you know the situation um really helped him become educated on you know the the possibilities either way uh staying or or leaving and um you know he made it you know he's a really mature kid he's been through a lot um and just trusting that you know the decision that was best for him was going to be what was best for us and uh you know that's uh that's the way he chose to go and of course we're we're super excited that's uh that's the belief he has and what can happen this fall. Oh it's so awesome to see the way that not only did he play at a really high level but he was dominant and one of the better quarterbacks in the country and it's just impossible not to feel good for someone like that especially like you said with all the adversity and the injuries that he suffered when he was at Indiana. Yeah I mean he's you know the the cool thing is he's using his platform now to help others you know he's been you know different passing academies uh in camps and elite 11 as a counselor you know just different things that he's done where you know he's sharing his uh experiences you know and everything he's been through because a lot of these guys in high school you know it's been been pretty easy going you know and uh he he's been through the fire many times in many different ways and uh you know he's a better person because of it and all those experiences lead to him being really good in those big moments on the football field for us right now.

What did you guys challenge him to do this off season I know last year it's tough to top what he did individually but how do you try to make him get even better here in year two? Well I think the difference is is that a year ago we really didn't uh announce him as a starting quarterback till midway midway midway through fall camp and um you know this year he's got a whole season to really build the team around him and lead and you know um you know it wasn't that he wasn't doing that once he was a starter in last fall but you know he's had a whole off season now and um you know he speaks up regularly uh in fact often uh if anything's not quite you know in line or a check or you know maybe even that complacency piece that you're talking about it for one second he senses anything we're not up to a good start for a player two uh you know in spring ball or you know running a workout here in the summer if there's something or even beforehand you know he just sees something he'll address it and you know our guys respond to him and he's you know just taking his leadership to another level. Do you feel like you have the best quarterback in the country right now? I mean I'm sure that's arguable right um for everyone uh that has a guy of high caliber like we have with Mike um I'm glad he's ours I guess that's probably the best way to put it and um you know uh just because of the special relationship we have with him um I honestly wouldn't want anyone else you know so that's no knock on other quarterbacks around the country it's just uh you know his talent mixed with his experiences and just the journey that we've been on together um I can't wait for uh what's left uh you know here in the months ahead. Yeah just forget about the rest of the country you just look at your conference coach it's impressive the quarterbacks we all know what Caleb Williams did a year ago Bo Nix had a really good redemption season Cam Rising is just such a warrior and we'll see how he'll be coming off that ACL uh DJ Uncle LA goes to Oregon State you have Sanders Kidd at Colorado this is just a ridiculous conference when it comes to quarterback play. You had to remind me yeah so you're right I mean it's really impressive uh the quarterbacks that we'll be facing this fall um nothing but respect for all of those you just mentioned and then some uh some more as well so uh it's going to be uh you know a year where a game's never in hand because uh the opposing quarterback can rip it and make some big plays and um you know we got to just uh take one moment of time it's gonna be a lot of momentum swings uh in Pac-12 football this year with all those quarterbacks and you know ours and ours being one of them um that are that are pulling uh pulling the trigger on these uh these throws and these offenses. Do you at all sense a chip on your guys's shoulder because heading into this year everyone's talking about what USC is going to do and not the other teams in the Pac-12 conference which does have Utah by the way that's won the last two conference titles?

Uh no I don't think so I think uh different teams deserve different levels respect based on where they've been at and what they've done and again I think we always just point to us you know and that you know we weren't we weren't there yet uh we felt at the end of the season last year we were playing as good of football as anyone in the conference um but we uh you know we didn't do what we were supposed to do you know earlier in the year and um fell short so I think it always comes back to us and um you know uh we got to do we got to do it and and make sure we're not vulnerable uh you know by by losing games that we're not supposed to lose and you know uh just taking care of business uh you know in the off season uh and then in our preparation each and every week. Coach uh Kalen DeBoer before we let you run the head coach of the University of Washington Huskies we know last year had a very successful season in year one we'll see what happens in year two we were just talking and having some fun with the quarterbacks it makes me wonder where is your defense at heading into this season? Yeah I really feel good about what we did this spring we brought in some a couple key additions uh to build on what we had returning um really a lot of guys coming back and and uh I think you know we got some more depth so just from a health standpoint we feel a little better uh you know across the board and um I've used the word vulnerable a couple times even this interview and I felt like last year that's what we were and um injuries hit us and hit us hard at a couple key spots and and uh put us in a thin a tough spot but I think uh year two in a system and a lot more reps that are banked for all our guys and another level of trust and belief and us being able to spin some things uh around our players and moving them around a little bit to fit their skills um I'm excited I'm excited about the mindset and where they're at and what uh they uh did this spring and the direction they continue to go with uh with a good fall camp ahead I feel like we're gonna be right there in the fall. Yeah it seems like for everything you're saying coach Kalen DeBoer that you guys have everything you need and you tell me if I'm right or wrong in saying this to go win the Pac-12 this year and be playing in the college football playoff. Yeah I mean again that's luck to be you know fed on the football field and I just I feel like we uh we got a team that um has the makeup and uh the mindset um and uh you know again I think every team that wins a championship there's a a couple breaks you gotta catch along the way right whether it's staying healthy or we're in a close game um here and there I've been a part of that over many years of you know winning championships and um you know teams just the way they come together and I think all those things are happening for us um but now we got to go do it. Last thing I'll ask you Kalen DeBoer I know it's such an ambiguous kind of question that I'm going to ask you but you look at the future of the Pac-12 and the future of college football with all the changes in the conference just what do you say like are recruits even asking you about that when when you're recruiting them about the future of the Pac-12 and the vision of Washington in regard to the conference? Uh yeah I think it's been something that's brought up uh been brought up more especially in the last couple months um just as kind of things I mean I know a lot of it revolves around the the media deals and things like that and just waiting to see what happens uh of course people are discussing things everywhere so you know guys are asking uh and I think I just always put the trust in UW on just our our not our not just our football program but our athletics department our university uh we have so much going for us and so many of those areas that are important um you know the Pac-12 is is our home and we're going to give everything to the place that's our home but I know that if uh whatever happens down the road happens we're going to be in a good spot we have a lot to offer and uh you know just trust in UW and all the support and all the things that have happened over the years uh leading to great things in the future as well. Well 65 days away Washington Huskies they do kick off their season up against Boise State at 3 30 p.m eastern on ABC. Coach good luck Kaitlyn DeBoer thanks so much.

Hickey just real quickly before we take a break I am really intrigued by the Pac-12 this year you have USC with Kaela Williams but can their defense do anything. Utah's won the Pac-12 back to back years we'll see how healthy Cam Rising is coming off the torn ACL that he suffered in the Rose Bowl game that you were actually at. Washington had a great year last year you go 10 and 2 11 and 2 every you you would be expected to to be in the Pac-12 championship game they weren't and their two losses were by slim margins and Michael Penick Jr's back and your guy Hickey Bo Nix at Oregon with Dan Lanning now and you're number two you look at those four teams I'm just really intrigued to see what the Pac-12 is going to do this year and then also not that I expect them to contend for the Pac-12 championship but there's always that intrigue with Deion Sanders now at Colorado and his son being the quarterback. There especially when it comes to veteran quarterback play it's a really deep league it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch it's kind of obviously the Pac-12 has been overlooked a lot because they beat the crap out of each other and then that's the last time like there's no one really or one team hanging by a thread and usually get they gets knocked out of playoff contention but like there are legitimate teams in here this year that usually there's maybe one in the Pac-12 that sometimes emerges are going in but I could easily argue three or four. And they play Oregon this year in conference October 14th Washington that is and then look at this stretch how about this stretch November 4th and then November 11th they're at USC and then they're home up against Utah. That's a tough stretch right there those two games back to back and then DJ Angolais is at Oregon State now and they play them the week after that that Washington program. So it's it's almost if I feel as if Washington is a good bet to win the Pac-12 if you're looking for someone out of USA but it's just that stretch right there of those games like wouldn't it be typical Pac-12 where Washington and USC let's say like both undefeated before that game Washington beats USC and then the next week they lose to Utah. I feel like that happens every year in the Pac-12 just when you're about to buy it on a team to go to college football playoff they shoot themselves in the foot and they lose to someone in the conference. And Oregon was that darling last year they beat or they beat UCLA, Bo Nix all of a sudden making a highs and run then they lose to Kaelin DeBoer and Washington at home there goes that thought Washington already had two losses so you're not really getting a lot of juice there in terms of playoff talk. Yeah they are that conference is a king of getting a little hype and then as soon as there's some thought or hype of oh wow maybe they can actually make a run boom wiped right away. Well I thought the greatest example was when Herbert was at at Oregon if you remember that final year of him at Oregon they were nine and one right they lost that first game of the year to to Auburn and then they're sitting there at nine and one and right you're thinking okay this team that go make a run at the college football playoff and they lose to Herm Edwards Arizona State 31 to 28. It was bad it's just bad loss that stuff happens so that's the Pac-12 for you. I will say you know what I miss the most about the two to six a.m eastern time shift here at CBS Sports Radio when I was doing that Friday into Saturday Saturday Sunday always the Pac-12 action that would be going on because usually I would not be up for those late games but when you're doing that show that started 2 a.m eastern as you've experienced in the college football season you throw a few dollars down the Pac-12 very much so fun.

Oren for me I get to experience on Friday nights you get a little sometimes late night Friday night Pac-12 game too well Saturday nights too you get you know Pac-12 after dark get two nights in a row and usually chaos ensues and usually if you're a highly ranked team playing in that time slot bad news for you bad news. to go first today i want to see something play on out here and just wonder if it's going to go the way that i expect it to so go ahead with the first pick hot take hickey to win the national championship this year and college football is going with i will you know i'll throw a curveball your way kind of screw up your play i'll take georgia now i think you're a fraud no i'm not i'm not changing my pick i'm just i'm more doing it for a drafting purpose to get the best teams i can get here but that's why i threw it out there because the correct answer right out of the gate is georgia georgia is right now plus 220 to win the national championship the next team is that plus 600 just because you have the best odds doesn't mean that you're going to win the championship or the the uh the team that's through the favor is going to win the championship but you've said that you don't buy that georgia is three p i don't think they will so if i give you the choice of georgia and the entire field because you have the first pick i didn't think you were going to take georgia but that shows me reason why i did it that shows me down deep hickey is saying georgia won't win the national championship but down deep in that ugly twisted heart of his he knows that georgia's gonna win the national championship this year when you put in a draft format i'm thinking about being a gm i'm trying to get i'm not thinking about number one i'm thinking about five picks here so i'm also trying to keep and preserve some other picks as well so i'm still sticking by i think they'll make the college ball five i don't think they're going to win it but because you gave me the number one pick because you think i'm going to take a certain team i then i'm going to deviate from your expected thinking of how i'm going to think and throw a curveball your way you try to throw a curveball my way so you just threw a punch now i'm going to counter punch is that okay let's hear it now i'm gonna throw you a curveball changing the rules up snake draft i'm taking michigan and then i am taking alabama because hickey is not optimistic about georgia and he's extremely pessimistic about alabama means one of those two teams of the sec are going to win the national championship this year i know you don't love the alabama quarterback position this year but when you don't have a lot of teams that you're intimidated by in the field i will always be intimidated by one man and one man only and that's the guy that's going to coach until he dies or so he's telling recruits and that is nick saben so i take michigan and i take alabama and that michigan team with how open it appears to be if they can't find the way to get the national championship game this year they just may never i know the program's been so successful last two years but now you have another year of jj mccarthy blake quorum back donovan edwards back there's just so much talent on that team especially on the offensive side of the ball and they did a nice job replacing all the talent that they lost with ajabo and hutchinson from two years ago with the way that the defense looked last year so i will go michigan and i will go alabama so who's your next pick here you didn't see that curveball coming no i did not but i will say pick number four my national champion still out there and i will take them right now the usc trojans best quarterback in college football one of the best head coaches in college football i'll pick four i will take the trojans wait now time out i'm getting a message right now no don't you don't know hold on there spike eskin is getting in my ear right now our boss oh spike you're not a fan of the snake draft anymore oh i apologize okay so we'll go back to the regular draft hickey's what people make him out to be but if it's not going to be michigan just from an odd standpoint i will take man i'm really tempted to go penn state here just to put a dagger in the heart of hickey just needed a huge upgrade in terms of actually good play calling now i can't pick penn state i'm gonna bypass on florida state i'm hoping notre name is just ridiculous because i like marcus freeman and sam hartman i'm not going to go back to the well with the pac-12 like i should go oregon or utah here i'm between two teams and they play in the same conference texas and oklahoma now i could be a jerk here and just pick oklahoma because i know hickey is always optimistic on oklahoma but i don't know what brent venables is going to be last year i didn't love it dylan gabriel good but what's he
