NFL Week 9 Thoughts (Hour 4)

Is there something really absurd that skews you out? Getting a paper cut on my eyeball. A fear you can't shake? I'm gonna leak ocular fluid on my cheeks.

Need to know what it takes for a home to fit your budget and your family? Well, Rocket can. Okay. Week nine, National Football League got kicked off last night. Eagles and Texans, Eagles win 29-17. Dallas Goddard on pace for 1,100 receiving yards this year.

An 80-something catches. He did have eight receptions for 100 yards and a score. Jalen Hurts, very effective as well. 21-27 for 243 yards and two touchdowns and had 23 yards on the ground. Eagles win 29-17. And you're a typical kind of Thursday night game when you have a superior team up against an inferior team. You knew the Eagles were gonna win, got sloppy a little bit at times, but they did what they needed to do and that was walk away with the victory.

They're 8-0 and we'll see when they'll first be in real danger of losing a game. Let's get to one thought though on week nine in each game for this upcoming slate of games on Sunday. Chargers and Falcons, no Keenan Allen, I don't care. Austin Eckler, we'll see if he's going to play. This a must win.

Or let me change that. This is a you gotta have it for the Los Angeles Chargers. You just can't afford to lose this game coming off a buy, coming off a bad performance against the Seattle Seahawks. They've never looked like the Chargers that we thought they were gonna be this year besides that first half against Kansas City.

I gotta see a more clean product from the Chargers. And this is a scrappy, gritty Falcons team. Brandon Staley, you better get this game or the pressure's just gonna start building, building, building on up against you.

And we all know who's lurking. Sean Payton wants that job. So I think for the Chargers, this is just a game that you look at it and you say, we gotta have this one, boys. I'm excited to see what the Falcons offense looks like. A nice little barn burner last week against Carolina. They are in first place. Bucks have a tough game against that one a little bit, but- No one better be ripping off their helmet in this game that helped out the Falcons to beat the Panthers.

You're very right about that. So you have to score- Keep your helmets on, Chargers! Right, you think you have to score, can you do it?

Interested to see, right, yeah. That's Brandon Staley's first coaching point this week. Keep your damn helmet on. Austin Echler, Mike Williams, whoever we're throwing the ball to, whoever we're gonna play, the guy that we pick up off the streets, keep your helmet on the kabasa. Dolphins and Bears. My thought on this game, two-a blowout.

That's my thought. Two-a-tongue of Valoa, five-and-oh when starting and finishing games this year. The Dolphins, oh, and three when two-a- doesn't finish a game this year. I look at last week, it was too close for comfort.

You had to come from behind. They're going into Chicago. Weather's supposed to be good all around the country this weekend. Supposed to be like 70-something degrees this weekend in most parts of the country. Two-a-blowout, that's the thought. I'm gonna use the word excitement.

I genuinely mean it. I'm excited to see Justin Fields this weekend. He's playing better. His game is starting to develop.

And you keep it going here and make it really three games in a row where you continue to get better and kind of continue to build off of your foundation. Panthers and Bengals. I want to see the Bengals play a complete game. We really haven't seen them play a complete game this year besides one time, and that was the Falcons. Tail of two halves against the Steelers, they lost. Disappointed against Cooper Rush, they lost. Beat the Jets, 27-to-12.

The Jets aren't that good even though the record says otherwise. Dolphins, two-a-got hurt in that game. It was sloppy on that Thursday night football. Ravens, low scoring, AFC North showdown. Saints had to come from behind with that Jamar Chase touchdown to win the game. Falcons, well-rounded effort. Browns, no show, they were MIA against Cleveland. This is a inferior Panthers team. I know that they played better and PJ Walker's giving them a jolt and they have a solid defense and the Bengals offensive line is not good. I know no Jamar Chase, I don't care.

I got to see a well-rounded performance by the Bengals get to five and four and start to stack wins here instead of this one week you believe then right when you start to believe they disappoint. Of a similar note, this is all about the offensive line. Like you have to block. This is a good front fork, especially for Carolina. They'll be physically, I pushed around on Monday night football against the Browns, block someone.

You're getting paid to block, block someone. I think this next thoughts gonna surprise you here, Hot Take Hickey. Cause when we get to this game, I'll let you go first here cause there's no way you're going to be able to guess what I'm about to say. Packers and Lions, what's your thought?

I agree. I don't think they're making an applause but anyone that does, this is your season on the line. This is, if you lose this game, your season is over and it's starting to think about the future starting to think about how you could build your team better.

Next year that Roger's there. This is a game where you are going to your own funeral if you lose in Detroit on Sunday. I actually have some excitement here on the Lions.

That's my thought. I am not telling you the Lions are gonna win this game. I think the Lions should get blown out but the exciting part here with the Lions I want to really see what Aiden Hutchinson does this weekend.

You're going up, I know he's not having a good year but one of the all-time great quarterbacks with the top 15 quarterbacks of all time in Aaron Rodgers, an offensive line that's been shaky, rotating guys in and out of lineup because of health in the Green Bay Packers. I could see Aiden Hutchinson even in a Lions loss racking up a sack or two and playing well for the Detroit Lions. I want to see if Hutchinson could get into that backfield early, make Rodgers force the ball out a little bit sooner than he would like, throw a pick and get an early lead. I want to see Aiden Hutchinson have a big time effort as a number two overall pick.

You weren't expecting that one. No, and if he does, oh boy, I cannot wait for Pat McPhee and Aaron Rodgers on Tuesday. That's for sure. Colts and Patriots. Oh, I have a thought on this game. You want to know my thought of this game? The score we're going to keep running up the score?

Nope. My thought on this game is there is a very popular Colts podcast inside the Odyssey family. Do you know the name of that podcast, by the way? The Blue Horseshoe Pod. The Blue Horseshoe Pod.

The Blue Horseshoe Pod. Now, these guys may be my enemies, but can you tell me who the two hosts of that podcast are? Ryan Hickey, yours truly, and George Bremmer. Who was the first guy? Ryan Hickey. I never heard of him.

Fair. And that Hickey fella, some may call him hot take Hickey, and whoever came up with that nickname deserves a raise. It's my understanding that hot take Hickey and George, they do a certain segment in previewing the opponent with an opposing member of the media. Is that correct? What is it called again?

Behind enemy lines. Now, I've been a real advocate for this guy that I have no clue who he is in hot take Hickey or Ryan Hickey, but I've been a big advocate for him to get more opportunities on CBS Sports Radio, to do podcasts like this and get more opportunities in this country. And no invite? Oh, now I remember, that's my producer, Ryan Hickey. Hey, Ryan, how you doing? No invite for me for that preview segment. You were afraid to put me on the podcast.

It's a bad job. Not afraid, I'm trying to be a good company guy. We're trying to cross promote pods.

They're all, for the most part, brand new. Oh, who'd you put on? Andy Hart of the Six Rings of Football Things pod. Andy's a nice guy, please. You put me on there.

You gotta know where your bread butter is, butter on that one. That's a bad job by you. You put the opposing podcast host on. I should've been invited. That's what we've been doing the entire time. I should've been invited. You were afraid of me cuz you thought I was gonna embarrass you on your own podcast.

That's what we would've been doing the whole time, just being consistent. Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame. What is there embarrassing about? You know, you look like the Colts in the first half.

This podcast this week, you had outscored in the first half 102 to 41 or 42, whatever the Colts are being outscored by in the first half. That's a bad job. How are you gonna embarrass me? Bad job, bad job not bringing me on. What are you gonna say?

You always believe in the Colts, the Colts stink. Just telling you. I think you were afraid of putting me on that podcast and- We actually previewed the game. I don't need you to come on there and- No, I would preview the game. You don't think I could preview the game?

I don't know. You're saying all. I'll preview the game for you right now. See, they're gonna make fun of me for believing in the Colts and buying in. I'll preview the game for you right now.

Let's hear it. This is going to be a sloppy game. Sam Melinga will have like one good moment in the game. There's no Jonathan Taylor in the game.

See, that's why I should have been a guest on this podcast. I know everyone on the Colts. So you have no Jonathan Taylor. Now, he minds on the Bills. This is going to be where Bill Belichick passed his spells on a young quarterback. Patriots are gonna win this game 30 to 17. 30 to 17. I'm actually not sure what I'm shocked by most of that. The Pats are gonna get to 30 or the Colts are gonna get to 17.

This is gonna be like, I'm saying 17, 13. See, I gave you a thought provoking kind of situation. Andy Hart didn't give you that. Stink. What did Andy Hart say?

He basically laid out why the Colts and the Pats are similar, which is actually kind of scary for if I was you and I was Pats' fan. They are wildly inconsistent. Both offensive lines stink. Defense is sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Why should that concern me? I told you all year this team's not that good. You're the one that told me your team was good. I told you both teams. The Colts and the Pats are going in the same direction here. 30 to 17.

Second, you know. Belichick game. Two year quarterback and Mac Jones and it's not looking great. Well, yeah, because Belichick didn't elect to surround him with pieces. I don't have a problem, Mac Jones.

It's the lack of talent around him. Anyway, my thought in this Patriots Colts game, hey, he didn't invite me on his podcast. I'm kind of salty about it. And I think he was afraid of me. I'm actually, I'm genuinely surprised that you actually wanted to go on.

I thought it was a bit this whole time. You actually want to come on the pod? Yeah, I'm upset. Well, not now.

I have morals. Alright, AFC talent again. I'm gonna invite you on. How about that?

Colts Pats. Oh, I was trying to give him the bait there. Trying to give you the bait. I'll deflate any thought of me ever coming on your podcast again. Andy Hart wouldn't give you that one.

I'll give you that. That was good. That was very good. Did you at least ask Andy Hart about what it's like to interview Belichick? No, I did not. Was I supposed to ask him?

Yeah, you should. What was he gonna say? I'm petrified. I'm afraid.

Guy runs right through me. Is that the case? I have no clue. Does Andy Hart ask questions?

He can't run over by Bill Villeen. You know what? Next time you do the pod, I want to come on when Andy Hart's the guest.

Do two guests. Because I want to ask Andy Hart how much of a douche Ben Volen is. The unfiltered pod. Starting to the pace. Some guy at Indianapolis is there.

You guys are trashing him for 20 minutes. No, no, no. I'm actually not.

Real sources, fake sources. I'm not upset about getting slighted on the invite for the Odyssey podcast. It's okay. What's your thought on this game? I want to see Bill Belichick and trust Mac Jones. I really thought in the Jets game he got very conservative after that pick six.

I was waved off and just doesn't seem like right now he trusts him. Bills and Jets. My thought. Bills by 11 and a half.

Should there be a mercy rule in this one? How about how quickly the narrative is turned to the Jets? They lose to the Pats. They're going to get crushed by the Bills. Then they go to their bye week and then they get the Patriots out of the bye week. From five and two and hope to potentially. Five and five.

Here's a thought. Can Zach Wilson not be an idiot? He'll turn the ball over. I'm sure. Can you keep him in the game?

Can you be polite? Those at least two of those picks you threw were just moronic. Yeah, they were stupid. Jason McCordie better get some a nice bottle of wine or something. Devin McCordie.

Come on. I'm sorry, Devin. I texted Devin after the game.

Two easiest picks of his life? So after the game, Devin McCordie, because Belichick moved into the second most wins in the history of the NFL past George Halas, McCordie celebrating it took two water bottles and dumped them over the head of Bill Belichick, which I was shocked. So I texted McCordie. That's a pretty savage move dumping water on Bill Belichick's head for something that's not a Super Bowl. He's like, wait, they posted that.

And I said, yep, it's right on the team's website. So I informed Devin McCordie who Hickey thought was Jason McCordie when they are twins. They are twins. Exactly.

And they share the same Twitter account for years. So, but yeah, I informed Devin McCordie about that. Anyway, Vikings commanders. Kirk. Do I need to say anymore? Kirk Cousins.

That's a thought. Go to seven and one. Keep your chances alive for the bye. You already really two games behind Philadelphia because you're currently one game and you lost to them.

So it's basically two. I don't want to hear that the commanders are starting to get hot. They're back at 500 Kirk Cousins.

You have all the weapons in the world. You better go find a way to win and cover the spread. I should have checked before. I believe this is his first game back in Washington.

Is that correct? Let's see how he responds emotionally. To what? What fans are going to be there? Well, fair.

That stadium's a dump. People, you know. No one cares.

No one shows up. Who? His people. People will still be that he knows in the organization that haven't been fired or quit, which is not very many. I'm sure. But I'm sure there's a lot of people you love in that organization.

Hey, that's what got his career jump started in that one playoff. You think Rg3 goes to that game? Probably not. Rg3 is trying to buy the command. I know.

He's being serious or at least minority sharing it. Are they friendly, you think? I don't see why Rg3 had any animosity towards him.

He got hurt and Kirk was the better option at the time. I know it's not, you know. I'm not saying you have to be like all warm and fuzzy.

I love them. Just tough situation. You know, I've never, when talking to Rg3, asked him if he likes Kirk Cousins or not. Next time he comes on the show, we'll ask him.

Maybe we'll be there Sunday, booing him. Yeah. We'll know for sure. Well, what's next?

The command is you're trying. If you're trying to buy the team, not a bad look to get there and boo Kirk Cousins. True. Sit with the fans. Be like one of four commander's fans in the stadium this weekend and make sure the sewage pipe doesn't burst on you in a poop flying out or the stands collapse rate Raiders and Jaguars gotta have it for Josh McDaniels and Derek Carr team is in the playoffs last year.

You got the Monty Adams got a new coach. You just gotta have this game. One of those classic gotta have it's I it's not a gotta have it for Jacksonville. It's not a must win for the Raiders because they're not making the playoffs.

They're two and five. You just gotta though have this one because if you lose to the Jaguars, the clown show just continues and it just adds more fuel to the fire. This adds to the possibility. Joshua Jones getting fired. It's not going to get fired one year in.

I'm just asking. I wasn't making any better he'll be there next year and then he could get fired in season next year but he'll be there for the start of year to imagine that goes almost same as in Denver. That would be actually kind of wild.

I was just let's see just Trevor Lawrence. Can we it gets a bad secondary can you have some success and can you have some consistency please? So we're asking for Seahawks and Cardinals Gina the man that leads the league in completion percentage can he get the Seattle Seahawks Seahawks to six and three. I think the Seahawks are better than Arizona.

They could beat them for the second time this year. I know Arizona is a two point favorite. I love the Seahawks this week and I really do and it's the Cardinals team that they're really lifeless.

There's not a lot to like a Hopkins good. We know that Kyler Murray solid quarterback overpaid overrated. There's not a lot of things to tangibly hold on to here with the Cardinals. I hope the better team wins and I think the better team is the Seahawks which is why if you are the Cardinals this has to be a Kyler Murray game you paid him the money your season is slipping. We can't talk to the Packers before or this is kind of one of those games if you lose your seasons over like officially you're done for the year. This is for the Cardinals like I don't think they're making the playoffs anyway but you lose this game at home to the Seahawks write it off. See you later and you're everything about twenty twenty yeah you're right the eulogy right. We write the eulogy on Monday for the Cardinals if they fall to three and six like they're in hospice right now. It looks like they're about to die. You write the eulogy though and you'll find out they're dead if they lose on Sunday Rams and Buccaneers Brady they're three and five.

He's never been two games below 500 in his career. This comes off to me as a kind of a situation where this is just one of those Brady performances where even the Rams aren't that good. Just find the way Brady finds a way they win a sloppy game.

This I think is a lemonade or game where the loser is out. You have the bucks right now three and five you lose to go in three and six. I know their schedule and I know or especially the division I should say is soft with the Falcons at four and four being your NFC South leaders. I just can't see them digging out of a three and six hole per se with this office looking very good and vice versa. The Rams with all their injuries year three and five and you really right now only have one option in Cooper Cup on offense outside of Matthew Stafford they cannot run the ball save their life. I have a tough time kind of buying into this Rams team. I thought well this season you'll hear another bad take. I thought this is the easiest path for a defending champion back to the Super Bowl that I can remember in a very long time. The only game they had to worry about was the NFC title game against the Buccaneers and here we could be the end of their season in Tampa even though you diss me and didn't put put me on your podcast this week. I'll defend you on that take it did not age well but in the moment there was only two other options for the Super Bowl realistically in the NFC to start the season it was Tampa Bay or it was the Packers the Packers that's right that are potentially about to be three and six. just like love the Vikings this week give me the Vikings Kirk Cousins coming home going to dump of a stadium and land over Maryland I don't think this game put it this way it's gonna be a blowout but it's not gonna be as ugly of a blood as you're accustomed to like when I say blood what do you what's the first score that comes to mind 40 to 17 yeah I don't think it's gonna be like 27 13 something along those lines give me the Vikings lame the three next pick for Jersey Jerry he is going with his underdog pick here the Jets at home against the Bills getting 11 and a half okay I've actually picked that game as well I will guess you are not with Jerry I am NOT with Jersey Jerry now you know what I said a blowout and sometimes there's different meanings of a blood in terms of how bad it is you know how you what did you say what 45 to what 40 to 17 yeah that's this game bills and Jets bills gonna blow out the Jets give me the bills laying eleven and a half points that line has come down throughout the week at one point I saw I was at like 13 and a half then I saw it at 12 and a half then late last night early this morning got down to 11 and a half and what is the final pick for Jersey Jerry Jerry is going close to the heart here he is taking the Colts on the road in Foxboro with Sam Ellinger making his first career road start as the Colts are six point underdogs okay I'm gonna go I gotta go to underdog here I'm gonna take the Seahawks they probably shouldn't beat the Cardinals twice in one season but this is a this is a game where we all look and say wow Cliff and Kyler did it again and that's on in a positive way that is definitely with a negative connotation give me the Seahawks plus the two they win the game outright I think they win this game 23 to 21 Seahawks take down the Cardinals 23 21 sweep them for the season so give me Jersey Jerry's picks one more time just to recap Jerry my Raiders minus two at Jacksonville Jets at home getting eleven and a half against the bills and the Colts plus six at the Patriots and I'm taking the bills laying the eleven and a half the Minnesota Vikings laying the three and then the Seattle Seahawks plus two points those are the picks for week nine in the National Football League Marco Belletti is here before we get to the latest CBS Sports Radio update Marco World Series I think it's over in terms of I don't see the Astros losing both of these games but I'm hoping we get a game seven where you add on this I think it's done in six but if you get a game seven I would actually favor the Phillies in that spot really yep not look Lance McCullers was so bad and all the talk of tipping pitches even if he figured out what they saw and he's able to correct it I think it would be in his head and that would be a tough spot for him in a game seven and I think Dusty Baker has shown us that he's got a long long leash with his starters that would be a recipe for disaster for Houston I think a game seven even if you've got Javier on three days rest backing him up the McCormick catch last night was just insanity that I mean that's a tremendous plan from a Philly kid doing it with the Eagles watching he's an eagle fan he's a Phillies fan and able to climb the wall I thought he was gonna actually hurt himself with the way that fence that like it's almost like a wired fence the way he kind of got caught on the way down forget the fact obviously was a great play that goes without saying right but it was the build-up when that ball gets hit I'm watching this game at a bar last night ever like oh that's gone that's gone and then you start to see the center fielder really start to run for and you're like oh maybe that's not gonna be gone but at least it'll hit the wall and then how they'll field it off the wall and then he makes the catch and when he makes the catch for a second you say wait did he just catch that and it was real Muto and then the pitcher Presley both had their won three and the Astros just make all the regular normal and then the extra plays like the McCormick play so I totally hear what you're saying with colors when you get to a game seven like that but that's why even if you get into a game seven I know that there's been changes with the Astros throughout the years and Pena has been an emerging star and you have a new manager you have a new GM from the group that won the championship there's no more Correa on this team there's no more Springer on this team but I just got to feel as if if it gets to a game seven where hey momentum has gone all over the place in this series watch if the Phillies winning game six I'll probably be saying on Sunday Oh Phillies are gonna win the World Series I just gotta think they find the way to win one yeah again they were in this spot a few years ago though memory serves in the Nationals go in there and win two straight games six and seven you know I think every road they won the road every road team won a game in that series if I remember it look it's hard to do for what the Phillies have to do to win game six and seven on the road is very very difficult the one thing that they've got they've got their guy in Zach Wheeler so that's gonna help them and then again in game seven not only is a game seven everything's up in here yeah I'm just if I'm Houston I would be very leery of a guy that Yeah that's a funeral you lose this game you go to three and six you have hit the the bottom of the deep end there I don't think there's a way to come on back from three and six even an NFC that is wide open especially when the schedule picks up an intensity for the Packers where you thought this was going to be an easy stretch against the Giants the Jets the commanders you knew the Bills was going to be a tough game but now you get the Lions and if you don't win this game the season's over because after that Cowboys Titans and the Eagles you got to take two out of three from there regardless if you if you lose this game you gotta win all three of them but assuming they win which I think they will like you think the Packers are gonna win the game right I do but I think it can be close I think we little hairy okay then they're gonna have to take two out of three they have to take two out of three from from Dallas Tennessee and Philadelphia and I don't know right now I can't give them the benefit of the doubt to do that the one game that I am bizarrely excited for Panthers and Bengals here's why Brian Burns could have got traded for two first round picks in 2024 and 2025 from the Rams Derek Brown's also a very good defensive lineman the Panthers defense from what the front office is telling you by not trading Brian Burns for two first round picks is we don't think the Panthers defense is that far away from having one side of the ball fix and going into this year this was a solid defense the defense that you said if they're gonna find the way to save Matt rules job which didn't happen the defense gonna lead the way and the quarterback just can't turn over the ball so what the Panthers are telling is we don't think with the young names they have the defense is that far off it's the offense that we're gonna really retool and they traded McCaffrey to pick up a second a third a fourth and a fifth over the next two years you know they're gonna be picking in the top five of the draft they're gonna get their quarterback of the future hope to get their quarterback of the future the Panthers can get after the quarterback the Panthers can apply pressure against a weak offensive line of the Cincinnati Bengals there is no doubt in my mind that the Bengals win this game but the question is by how much and if you're Cincinnati I don't want to hear oh we can't have the offensive line figure it out we don't have Jamar Chase in this game this is Joe Burrow against PJ Walker this is a good Bengals defense against PJ Walker the Panthers defense that has been fine going up against a Bengals offense that I just don't know what they're gonna be week in and week out tail two halves against the Steelers didn't show up against the Cowboys beat the Jets beat the Dolphins didn't score a lot of points loose to the Ravens had to come from behind to beat the Saints great performance against the Falcons no show against the Browns so yes the Bengals absolutely
