If you're a maintenance supervisor for a commercial property, you've had to deal with everything from leaky faucets to flickering light bulbs. But nothing's worse than that ancient boiler that's lived in the building since the day it was built, 50 years ago.

I can tune into your show and hear the unvarnished truth. Thank you. This is what's right, what's left with Pastor Ernie Sanders. Good evening and welcome to another edition of what's right, what's left and is.
27th day of November. Only a couple hours away from Thanksgiving here. And tonight we have, starting with our producer, we have none other than, well, than Stile himself. Hey, good evening Pastor.
And they're live in the studio. I have Elder Barkley. Good evening, all give thanks unto the Lord for he is good. And Aaron Ganeas. Hello Pastor.
And way out yonder in Missouri, we have the legendary Parson Joe Larson. Oh, I'm blessed to be here with all of you to celebrate Thanksgiving and give praise to God. Well, you're going to start out tonight.
We're on kind of a tight schedule, so Joe, take it away. All right, Psalm 95-2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. In Psalm 100, in verse 4, enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto him and bless his name. In Psalm 107, in verse 22, and let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare his works with rejoicing.
Sacrifice, let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving to me is acknowledgement to God. Thanking God for what? His gifts, his mercy, his blessing, his salvation. Everything we have is due to him. Our very life, the planet that we live on. Everything is a gift from God. He is one that, what is it? Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father and by him and through him all things in heaven and earth exist, consist.
In other words, continue on. And this Thanksgiving, instead of just thanking God for food on the table, for family, we have so much more to be thankful for. We were in the middle of a communist takeover, a communist revolution.
Many Americans have not yet understood this. It was a huge spiritual battle between Satan, forces of the Antichrist, and the born again believers, the Christians in this country. And I am so thankful that God has once again blessed this nation. I was, I'll be honest, I was pretty worried that we were going to be under judgment, not blessings.
Looking at what this nation has done over the past couple decades, we did deserve judgment. But God, being merciful, not only stopped this communist revolution from taking place, this ungodly Antichrist revolution, he gave us a real leader. He gave us a people, a chance to return to that nation under God, to return to that constitutional republic, that a republic is a government with rules of law that do not change. Well, in this case, those laws that do not change were, according to our founding fathers, the Ten Commandments of God and the teaching in the New Testament.
Laws that do not change. God's word is eternal. It will never end. It will never stop.
It is always in force. And he has given us a chance to return back to that, back to those values, the principles, the ideas, and the faith of the founding fathers. We were losing our way, folks. We had, as a nation, not all of us, but as a nation, had listened to the lies, the deceit, the propaganda. We allowed ourselves to be fooled, deceived, controlled. We turned our children over to Satan to be educated. We allowed God to be kicked out, not only out of schools, but out of our government, out of our local cities and state governments, out of our social events, out of our most important events in our lives. We had been allowing our history to be rewritten, allowing freedoms to be lost, allowing children to be slaughtered, murdered in the womb. We allowed our culture to be taken over. It turned into a cancel culture where schools could no longer put up even red and green ornaments out to Christmas. He couldn't use the word Christmas, you know, had to celebrate winter solstice, happy holidays, you know, winter festival.
The biggest thing they didn't want to hear was the name of Jesus. We allowed Black Lives Matter to go rampant across the nation run by two people who openly said they were Marxist-trained experts. They were trained in communism and Marxism. We allowed the defunding of police. We allowed the election of liberal attorney generals and district attorneys. It set criminals free that allowed in some places shoplifting up to almost a thousand dollars. No, you know, slap on the wrist.
No penalties. We allowed our borders to be ripped open. We allowed our country to be invaded. We allowed our money to be stolen from us in terms of government printing money, causing inflation taxes. Folks, we were very, very close to losing this nation.
And it would be our children and grandchildren that would suffer the most. I am so thankful for God's interposition interfering in this called it in inner position. As I look, there are 27 different verses about being thankful, about thanksgiving to God, giving him thanks. And as I looked it over, even at the last in Revelation 7, verse 12, saying, Amen. Blessings and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and praise and power and might be unto our God forever and ever.
Amen. Thanksgiving. We should just truly, truly this year be thankful from the bottom of our hearts that the Lord has been merciful to us, has given us marvelous opportunity.
You know, miracles that happen very seldom should be appreciated. The Lord gave the Promised Land to the children of Israel, gave them their Promised Land, and he gave America. It was the birth of Christianity, the birth of religious freedom in the world. We were even warned. George Orwell wrote 1984 about a future society where the ruling party insisted on, you know, taking two plus two could be five instead of two plus two equals four.
And Pastor Ernie and I had been watching, showing you blow by blow, year by year, that ruling party taking over that George Orwellian world of the future. Where now, here in New York City, one of their big math professors Ph.D. claimed that two plus two equals four reeks of white supremacy, patriarchy. The myth that math is cultural neutral or objective is a myth. Yeah, two plus two can be anything you want it to be. And in Oregon, they were teaching in the state education department that a pathway to math equity, teaching teachers how to dismantle racism in mathematic instruction. Math equity.
In other words, everything had to be the same outcome. Well, math is a true pure science. Two plus two does equal four. It never equals five in truth. But in this crazy Orwellian world, it could equal anything you want.
Because what it came down to is whatever you thought you believed could be true. A man could become a woman. A woman could become a man. Yeah, men can have babies.
Men can breastfeed. How low we went, folks. How far we went before we woke up and realized the truth.
Our universities were teaching insanity and some still are. There's a great deal of the battle still ahead. A great, great deal to do because that madness of George Orwell's party is still out there and they are still going to claw and fight back.
And we have to run to the battle. I want to go back and remind you that even in our declaration, remember our declaration, we were to assume among the powers of the earth the equal station to which the law of nature and nature's God entitles them for free men. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created by the creator God equal. And they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable. Unalienable means God-given rights.
Rights can never be taken away because they're given to us by God. And when they finished their declaration, they said they appealed to the supreme judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions. That's where they got their power, where they got their, you know, they appealed to him. They turned around and in the end they said, and for the support of this with firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledged to each other our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor. Everything that happened in America was based in faith and started even, okay, our first Thanksgiving proclamation, the true one.
I'm going to read from George Washington's proclamation, Day of Thanksgiving, January 1, 1795. And he's talking about going over, reviewing the calamities, the afflictions, and the blessings which we receive in the end. And in such a state of things, it is in a special manner our duty as a people with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God and to implore him to continue and confirm the blessings we experience. And with that, here's his proclamation, whereby it is the duty of all nations, not just ours, all nations, to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, to humbly implore his protection and favor. And whereas both houses of Congress have, whether joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. To be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
First time in history that people were allowed to create their own government, folks. Now, he continued, therefore, I do recommend and affirm Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these states to the service of that great and glorious being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, for that will be, that we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks for his kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation, for the final and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of his providence in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one, now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge, and in general for all the great and various favors which he has been pleased to confer upon us. He continues, talking about that we may unite in most humble offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and ruler of nations, beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions.
Wow! Beseech God to pardon our national and other transgressions to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly, punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations, especially such as showed kindness unto us, and to bless them with good governance, peace and concord, to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us, and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity that as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord, 1789, signed G. Washington. That was a prayer. In many ways, it's a covenant.
It's a covenant with God, if you think about it. God has blessed us, and Washington is saying what we are to do in return, to bless Him, to take care of the blessings that He has given us, to acknowledge that we are dependent on Him, to obey His laws, to ask that our sins be forgiven, to continue to rule all the things that are good and bless Him for them. In a way, acknowledge with the grateful hearts the many and signal favors that God had bestowed on this nation.
To me, that is the true meaning of Thanksgiving. We hear all the story about the Pilgrims, and about the Indians, and Squanto, and the first Thanksgiving feast, and the Pilgrims. There are some great stories there, but to me the big, big story is that God enabled us to become a nation. He gave us this marvelous country.
He was with us every step of the way. As I'm looking, I'm seeing God in the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson called the Battle of King's Mountain the turning of the tide of success in the war for independence. Victory was given to God because if it hadn't been for His hand interfering, we would have lost.
We would have lost that battle. There was a miracle that took place. There were stories of the Battle of Yorktown. Yale president Ezra Stiles wrote, Who but God could have ordained the critical arrival of the French fleet to assist in the siege of Yorktown should we not ascribe to a supreme energy the wise generalship created by General Greene leaving England, coming roving Cornwallis to pursue his helter-skelter ill-faced march into Virginia. It is God who raised up for us a powerful ally, a chosen army, and a naval force who sent us a Rochambeau to fight side by side with Washington in the Battle of Yorktown. Ben Franklin had gone over begging for help from the French. He and Marquis de Lafayette went over to talk to French King Louis XVI to send ships and troops to help Americans. He sent de Grasse's 3,000 troops and General Rochambeau's 6,000 French troops.
He sent 24 sailing ships to defeat the British there off of Virginia Capes. As I look back through the history, these different things that happened, the Continental Congress passed a resolution, it being the indispensable duty of all nations to offer up their supplications to Almighty God, the United States in Congress assembled to hereby recommend to the inhabitants of these states general to observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Psalm, thanksgiving to God for his mercies. Pastor Joe, I'm going to have to break in here because we have J-6, our inmate, Jake Ling, who's been, well, he's been for four years without a hearing, without a trial. So go ahead, bring Jake up. Jake, listen, we have this pre-scheduled program so we can give you 15 minutes to go ahead and tell your story. Thanks, Pastor. God bless America. What a beautiful Thanksgiving week we have so much to be grateful for. And this year on my list of gratitude is the American people for voting in President Trump and saving my life from the next 20 years in a federal prison. And so thank you, Pastor, for pushing the vote and pushing this Make America Great Again agenda.
Thank you guys so much. Well, thank you for doing what you're doing and for your service to us actually as a political prisoner there in Washington, D.C. Yeah, thank you, Pastor. It's my honor, you know, just as your co-host there was explaining, you know, every generation or two there comes a time where men, you know, need to stand up against the evil forces of this world. And they always seem to congregate in the seats of power as tyrants and that's what we did on January 6th. We're proud to do what we did. And there's obviously repercussions sometimes when your side doesn't immediately have a swift decisive victory. And so we saw those repercussions here play out for the last four years.
What this deep state New World Order tyrannical regime that's running America, the Marxists, are willing to do to the prisoners of war for the war of liberty in this country, all of us. Every single one of us could have been a January 6th political prisoner. But God chose us and we rose up to the occasion and for four years we remained resilient and strong because of the love of the Savior, Jesus Christ living in us, Him through us. And we're here and we have been undefeated since, you know, they've tried everything they could possibly throw at us to destroy us and create a group of dejected, miserable, and broken families. But we've come together in our peril and lifted up the name of God and four years we're still strong because of the immense support we've had. Well, you know, I'm looking on January 20th, the very first day, I'm looking as President Trump said he will pardon and I'm looking for you guys to get pardoned on that day. Amen.
That's actually why I wanted to come on the program today. We have a huge call to action. We've started a national petition for all of the January 6th political prisoners to be released on day one.
No man left behind in the gulag. This is so important because there are factions in Washington, D.C., some pearl clutchers, some people that are in Trump's ear trying to influence him to do individualized, selective pardons. And basically what that'll mean is some of us will remain in prison for decades and some of the Jan 6thers will go home to their families and we can't have, after all the suffering, after the gross entrapment of the Jan 6thers by the federal government, after the partial and biased and rigged jury pools that we've had in all, I mean, I can give you guys, listen, listen, the selective prosecution, right, of Jan 6thers over Hamas and PLM riders, all of these things, we cannot allow any Jan 6thers to remain in prison. So here is a call to action, guys. Please sign the petition to free all the Jan 6thers on day one. We have over 30,000 signatures. It's on J6Pardon.com with an S. J6Pardon.com.
You can go there right now. We've had amazing people sign the petition already, some huge conservative figureheads like Mike Lindell and Laura Loomer and Darren Beatty and Jim Hoff, right, and Wayne Allyn Root and just amazing people, Grant Stinchfield, Brandon Straka, you name it. The list of real deal patriots that support us is growing every day and we need your guys' help to bring this one home. So please, guys, go to J6Pardon.com and sign the petition.
All right, this, what you just said here will be heard eight times in the next two days. So that'll work, hopefully. So J6Pardon.com, we will get on top of that right away.
I encourage the folks out there. Is it pardons? J6Pardons? J6Pardon.com. J6Pardon.com.
J6Pardon.com. So we're calling upon President Trump and new Attorney General Pam Bondi to dismiss all current pending charges, halt all future arrests and investigations, and pardon all convicted January 6ers on day one. That is what the American people set a mandate for when we voted for the Make America Great Again candidate, Donald Trump. This is one of the top of mind things that everybody voted for so we can hold our politicians, our elected officials accountable with this petition that'll be on Trump's desk on day one. We will be on top of this.
I will be on top of this from now until day one. Thank you, Pastor, and obviously the prayers, right, the prayers to turn the hearts of our leaders as the Bible so beautifully explains are in God's hands like the waters of a canal to be shifted and to be moved. And right now we need to make sure that Trump stays with his gut feeling, his gut instinct on pardoning all the Jan 6ers. He's openly said it before, and we can't allow any stakes or any, you know, scoffers to enter into his, you know, bedchamber there and influence him and pervert his great, you know, understanding that we have that he's going to pardon us all. So this is why the petition is so important because it shows public backing and public support. You have one minute remaining of this idea. So your prayers for Trump's heart to be unchanged and unmoved, immovable, and the Holy Spirit pray for God to continue to maintain the integrity of this man's word that's going to, like I said, Pastor Ernie, I love you guys on this program so much and your support for the last four years has been a game changer for us.
And the difference between the selective pardons or everybody getting a pardon on day one is either two months in prison for me or 20 years. So please, guys, go to J6Pardons.com. God bless everybody.
My name's Jake Lang. I'm a Jan 6th patriot and I'm proud to serve my country in the Gulag. God bless you and all those that are with you there. And we know that you can still have a blessed Thanksgiving knowing we're going to be fighting like anything for you out here. Amen. Thank you, guys. Happy Thanksgiving.
The Lord is all we need because he has given us the bread of life. Right. Amen. Amen. God bless you, Jake. Thanks, Jay. God bless.
Very quickly, I wanted to make an announcement. Geauga County Right to Life is having its annual Christmas Council Sunday, December 1st at 7 p.m. Geauga County Right to Life has been, they have fought, you know, like Christian soldiers with their eyes upon the cross. And since 1973, we have saved, they've been a big part in saving over 24,000 babies. And they need your help, folks.
They really do. I mean, so many, so many of us that were there in the beginning aren't here anymore. We're going home to be with the Lord.
But we worked and we fought and for the for the lives of the precious unborn. And this Christmas concert, they always put on a great concert. It's going to be held at the Chester Christian Center as the Chester Christian Center. And that's at 11815 Chillicothe Road.
That's Route 306 in Chesterland. And there's no admission charge. It's free. But we take an offering and we really need for you to come out and support us.
We really do. That's this coming Sunday, December 1st at 7 p.m. at 11815 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland, Ohio. For more information, you can call 440-338-1367.
That's 440-338-1367. And now I'm going to do a reading. And the reading is from the personal diary of William Bradford.
And it's about the history of the Plymouth Foundation in England. The Bible was finally translated into English and was being read by everyone. Talking about the King James Bible. Now, godly preachers were traveling the countryside, telling the truth of God's word. Many were becoming aware of their sins and giving their lives to Christ as they did this.
They were confronted with their friends laughing at them like today, like today, and telling them, telling lies about them. Their lives became hard due to the persecution. They bore all their troubles with much patience and studied God's word even harder. These people saw the evils of those who were anti-Christian like we do here today in America and believed that they were the Lord's free people. So they joined together into a church estate in Scrooby, England.
Together they could walk in God's ways, doing their best to live a Christian life with God's help. They were willing to hold their beliefs true no matter what it cost them. The persecution of the separatists, as they were called, and that's what we're called today, all true Christians are separatists, became so great that they decided to leave England for Holland. When they left, much was left behind. Their land, their livelihoods, their friends, all familiar surroundings. They left to go to a country with different customs and language and jobs and government.
The separatists were plain, simple country folks and were not accustomed to the ways of the new country. The move was full of problems and difficulties. But they set their hearts and their minds on the word of God and rested on his providence. But when they went to leave England, they found that the ports were closed to them. They could not stay in England for they no longer had a home.
But they could not leave England for no one would take them. Secret passage was sometimes searched for, but it usually ended up in betrayal and the loss of their goods and money. Finally, in 1607, a large group of separatists gathered in Boston and Lincolnshire and hired a ship to take them to Holland. Soon arrangements were made, a time set, and their goods placed on the ship.
Finally, after a long wait and much expense, it looked as if they would be on their way. But when they were all on board the ship, the captain betrayed them. The captain had made arrangements for officers to come and search them and place them in open boats to take them back to town. Once in town with no money, books of possessions, they were put in prison to await trial.
Months later, they were set free and were to try again. The next spring, a friendship was formed and arrangements made with a Dutchman at home to take an even larger group to Holland. They were to board the ship at a place which was some distance from any town. The women, children, and possessions were sent to a location a day ahead of departure in a small barge. But the sea was rough and women and children became very ill.
They found calm waters at a nearby creek. The next day, the women and children did not stir until noon, but the men were ready on time. The Dutchman was loaded, the men on board, and the ship was when he saw a large group of soldiers coming with weapons.
The anchor lifted, the ship left immediately. The men watched on board the ship as their women and children were taken hostage with all their possessions. The men were left with no money or clothes. There was nothing for them to do but trust in God.
The men sailed for 14 days in a storm that frightened even experienced sailors. The separatists raised their voices in prayer. They looked lost when the ship began to sink. But the Lord's power and mercy appeared. When the ship arose up again and the sailors' hearts gained courage, Radford tells of the prayers that all the men and sailors alike said heaven a word during the storm.
It was just a short time after the ship recovered that by God's providence, the storm weakened. And when they reached their desired port, the people came flocking down to the ship to see those whom God had delivered out of such severe and long-lasting storm. The women and the children who had been captured were taken from place to place, from justice to justice, until they did not know what would become of them. They were frightened, alone, and did not know what had happened to their menfolk.
None of the English officials knew what to do with them. They had no home to be sent back to and no place to go. Finally, all the officials grew tired of their plight and just wanted them to go somewhere, somewhere, was with their husbands and fathers in Holland, which is finally by God's providence exactly where they were sent.
Now in all the handling of this case in England, the cause of the separates became quite famous. Many others were to hear of their plight and join them in Holland. In Holland, the separatists were faced with problems concerning language, customs, dress, but they kept their eyes on God even in the face of poverty, which they would now have to handle.
God saw their faith and patience, and he gave them victory over their troubles. And when the separatists left England, there were a few who stayed to the last to be sure even the weakest made it over. These men included Mr. Robinson and Mr. Brewster. After finally arriving and living in Amsterdam for a year, Robinson and Brewster decided to move the group to Leiden.
This was done to keep the church from dividing into two groups. With much hard and continual work, the separatists, who had been farmers for the most part, were able to learn new crafts and developed a comfortable living. They were to live in Leiden for many years, growing in the knowledge of the Lord and being accepted by the community.
Robinson, as their pastor, taught the group much during those years. Their ideas and beliefs were formed and their memories increased. And by 1617, there were over 300 separatists living in Leiden.
For 12 years, the separatists lived in Leiden. Their hard work and hardships finally began to take its toll. Their leaders were growing old and began to look for another place to live. These Englishmen saw their friends dying in a strange land and their children speaking a strange language, accepting strange customs and dress.
Well, it was indeed time to move on. The great dream of these separatists was to go to a new land and become stepping stones for other people. With this end in mind, plans were made to move the colony again. The thoughts turned to the land of America, which was full of promise and few people. As plans were made, fear grew in the people. Would they starve, be killed?
Would they have no clothes or be lost at sea? All kinds of thoughts grew up. And finally, the people decided that God would not turn his back on them. They decided that it would be better to die a free man in America than an exile in a foreign land.
Bradford tells next of how the separatists begin to pray to God for his direction and help. A conference was then held in Virginia. In the New World, even though it ran the same risk of as much persecution as England, was decided upon in their designation. Two members were chosen to go to England and ask for permission to settle there with the freedom of religion. At this time, too, I wanted to say it was about when John Bunyan was imprisoned for his faith and for not accepting the license, being licensed by the state, by the Church of England. Their representatives found the Virginia Company, which was eager for them to go and willing to grant a patent for whatsoever privileges they desired.
The king's seal was then sought and the providence of God waited on. At about this time, it was learned that the King of England had granted it to be settled, a large section of the northerly parts of the Virginia patent, which was to be governed separately from Virginia, and called by a new name, New England. In this new area called New England, reports said that there were lots of fish. For that and other reasons, the separatists decided to make New England their destination. The provision for the trip was purchased from the merchants and plans with the Virginia Company finalized. However, unknown to most of the separatists, the conditions which were representatives, which their representatives agreed to, had been changed.
Bradford lists the changes and the conditions which the company for the right to travel and settle in New England. One, every adventurer that were people who were not separatists but traveled to the new colony to settle, or planner, those were the separatists, over the age of 16 was to be granted one share in the partnership. Two, each person who paid for himself in either money or provisions would be granted double shares. The people transported to the colony would continue their joint stock and partnership together for seven years. During the seven years, all profits or benefits obtained by trade, working, fishing, or any other means, would remain the common property of all the shareholders.
Upon arrival, they would choose a number of fit persons to work on the fishing boats. The remaining people would be divided among the tasks on land, such as house building or planting. At the end of the seven years, all the profits, the capital, houses, lands, and goods, would be used to pay off all debts and the remaining equally divided there between the shareholders. When done, each man would be free from debt to anyone in the adventure. Anyone who came to the colony later or joined in holding stock would be given his fair share at the end of the seven years. Any man who brought his wife, children, or servants would be given a single share for each who was over the age of 16 years. If the man provided for their necessities, then he would be given double shares. If any man of them was between the ages of 10 and 16, then two of them would count as one share. Any children who went to the colony under the age of 10 would have no share in the company except to be given 50 acres of land at the end of seven years. If anyone died before the seven years were up, the share would go to any heirs. All persons in the colony would obtain their meat, drink, clothes, and provisions out of the common stock of the colony. The major differences in the conditions were that the lands and houses could not be divided up until the seventh year, and that out of a week of seven days, two days would no longer be used for a person's own employment and profit. Also, the patent granted them was not for New England, as hoped, but for the Northern Virginia land.
These conditions would have a major effect on the success or failure of the colony. After a great length, a small ship, the speed well, was purchased and fitted in Holland, and it planned that it would be used in the new colony for fishing. All was made ready for the journey.
Another ship, the Mayflower, was hired at London. All seemed finally ready. Everyone gathered at Plymouth, England, and awaited departure. The day before leaving, the separatists held a day of solemn prayer. The pastors read from the Bible, Ezra chapter 8, verse 21, which says, And there at the river, by Hava, I proclaimed a fast, that we might humble ourselves before our God, and seek of Him a right way for us, and for our children, and for all our substance.
Everything had been ready. Took to the proper ship, and the sails lifted. The journey of the separatists in America had finally begun on August 5, 1620.
102 men, women, and children had begun a great adventure. At this point in the story, it should be noted that the smaller the two ships, the speed well, became unseaworthy. Twice the separatists had to return to England and leave again.
Finally, the speed well was sold, and some people gave up. But the rest were loaded on the larger ship, the Mayflower. This accounts for their late arrival at Cape Cod during the winter months. The separatists, now called the Pilgrims, had finally left England on a voyage to America. The journey was great for a while.
Fair winds and weather were enjoyed for all the seasons, wrote Bradford. Then halfway across, they began to encounter strong winds and a fierce storm. The ship was severely shaken.
A fierce storm, a fierce storm. The upper decks became very leaky. One of the masts bowed and cracked. Everyone feared that the ship would not be able to finish the journey. A few of the pilgrims realized that the mariners were even afraid and could tell from their talk that they wanted to turn back. They went to the officers of the ship to discuss the situation.
There was much discussion and difference of opinion as to what to do. After considerable talk, it was decided that the ship was strong enough. The main mast was fixed by using a huge screw, which one of the pilgrims had brought with him from Holland. The large screw from a printing press was used to hold the mast in place. They caulked what they could in the upper decks with what they committed themselves to the will of God and resolved to proceed.
After a period of time, more storms finally reached Cape Cod. It is interesting at this point to ponder the fixing of the ship's mast. Imagine for a moment a family packing their things in Holland. They couldn't take much, only what was truly needed. This father runs over and puts in a huge screw?
One can just picture the discussion as to its true value. The divine providence would saw to it that the screw was on board the Mayflower. Bradford writes at this point about the people. They had borne such hardships even before the journey. The trip at sea had been miserable. Now they looked at a land where there was no inns to welcome them, no friends to help them get settled, no place to refresh themselves. The apostles, according to the Bible, when they were shipwrecked, were met by the natives with kindness and mercy. The natives waited on shore for the pilgrims were ready to meet them with bows and arrows. Not only that, but it was now winter.
And if you had ever lived in the part of the country where you know the winters are cold and harsh, and fierce storms are common, we know that for sure. It was dangerous to travel, much less explore an unknown sea coast. What the people saw from this ship was a vast wilderness full of wild animals and men. Behind them stood the vast Atlantic Ocean, which they had just crossed.
It stood between them and the rest of the civilized world. The ship's officers and crew were growing restless. There was talk of just dropping the pilgrims at their things off at any shore. The pilgrims looked back on all that had happened and all they had left behind.
The hope, which seemed so big and bright back in Leiden, now seemed so small. All that was left was the grace of God to sustain them. Bradford wrote that how they wondered if their children and grandchildren might say, our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean and were ready to perish in this wilderness. But they cried unto the Lord and he heard their voice and looked upon their adversities. He delivered them from the hands of the oppressor. Let them confess before the Lord his loving kindness and his wonderful works before the sons of men. And pilgrims arrived at Cape Cod on November 11th. They had to find a place to live quickly.
The storms which the ship had met during a voyage had carried the ship much farther north than they had planned. We're coming to a break and we will pick this up right after this with more.
