Welcome to Truth Talk Live. All right, let's talk. A daily program powered by the Truth Network. This is kind of a great thing, and I'll tell you why. Where pop culture, current events, and theology all come together.
Speak your mind. And now here's today's Truth Talk Live host. Well, good afternoon. I'm Duane Carson, and I am your host. Today, and we have a very special guest today. He's the president and the senior chaplain at Motor Racing Outreach. If you are a racing fan, a NASCAR racing fan, if you know someone who is, you need to tell them right now. Turn on Truth Network and listen to Truth Talk Live today.
We have Billy Malden. Billy, welcome to Truth Talk Live. It's a pleasure to be with you.
Thank you so much. Hey, tell us where you are right now. I am in the infield at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, Nevada, where it's probably about 54 degrees outside. And the truck series is on the track practicing and qualifying as we speak.
It's a great service for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racing community. And it's just, we're out here doing what we do. Wow. 54. By the way, it's 54 degrees in Winston-Salem right now. 54 sounds really cold in Las Vegas. They may have to be doing some adjusting on their driving for tonight then. Yeah, it should make for a fast race, actually. It should be a good race, a fun race, with the cooler temperatures and everything. But it's not necessarily what you expect when you come to Nevada. We're making the best of it.
Yeah, I was expecting you to say it's 105 degrees. Billy, I know a little bit about you, but really not a lot. And I know our listeners probably don't know a lot about you.
So what is the Billy Malden story? I love to hear when you got saved and stuff like that. Oh, my goodness. Okay.
Well, let's just go for right now for a second, then I'll back up. Currently, I'm in my 26th year with Motor Racing Outreach, and we're the organization that has provided chaplaincy, particularly to the NASCAR racing community for over 30-some years now. And it's been a real honor and a pleasure to be a part of the sport.
That's NASCAR Cup Series Xfinity and Trucks for those that are fans. But like I said, I started with them 26 years ago. Prior to that, I have spent time actually involved in campaign politics in the state of North Carolina. I worked for a gentleman that ran for governor at one point in time, a gentleman that was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. I have worked in the local church, Central Church of God in Charlotte, North Carolina, as an assistant youth pastor.
Going back a little bit further, I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in business administration and a minor in international business. And it was there that I met my wife, Julie, and together now we have four wonderful kids, two boys and two girls. And it was while I was in college that I came to know the Lord and to accept Jesus and to understand who He is and receive Him into my life. I grew up in the church.
I was born and raised in the Charlotte area. I attended church actually a lot growing up in Concord. I was one of the kids that when I was little I never really missed church, went to vacation Bible schools, Sunday schools, Wednesday night services and all that. So I grew up knowing a lot of the Bible and knowing a lot about the stories and about God and about Jesus.
But as far as it becoming personal, it was during my college years. You and I have a similar testimony. I grew up religious. Every time the church doors were open, I was there.
Like you said, vacation Bible school every year. Many years I was the one that carried the Bible. People thought early on I was going to be a preacher. But I wasn't born again. And that's your testimony. You were not born again.
And that's the key, isn't it? We've got to be born again. Yeah, so basically what happened is because, in credit to my parents, my grandparents, my family, a lot of friends, I was exposed to the Word. So the seed, as we often say, was in me. The truth was in me.
I just hadn't owned it or come to understand it for myself. And it was while I was in college, I went through just a really personal hard time, brought on myself by decisions I made and choices that I made. But it was during that time that I actually dropped out of college at Appalachian State for a semester because I was just personally struggling emotionally and mentally for the most part.
Nothing major as far as doing anything bad or anything like that. But it was just God bringing me to a breaking point. And when I stepped away from college, I went back home and went back to work doing construction, which was something that I had done a lot during my college years just to make money and so forth. And it was during that time and processing a lot of my hurt and my pain that I was, and this was really a work of God, this was a work of His Spirit in my life, I was drawn back to Him to find the answers that I was looking for.
And so a long story short again, I was working construction in Savannah, Georgia, actually. And one day I called back home because I was tired of hurting and feeling bad and I asked my mother to call my grandmother and see if she could get me some Bible verses or something that might would help me. And why I went back to the Bible and to Bible verses, again, only because that was something that was in my life from growing up that I thought of or probably better stated, the Holy Spirit brought back to my remembrance. And so I was inspired by Him to go ask for that. My grandmother sent them to me and I began to read the scripture and to make, again, I mean, I could tell you so much, but I ended up going one day and kneeling down in the back of a construction tool trailer, just simply saying when they got I'm tired of hurting.
If you can help me, please help me. I got up, I walked out of that tool trailer, I hit the top step and all of a sudden I had this sense that I was not alone. Wow. And I know now, looking back, and I sensed it at that point in time, that part of what I was wrestling with and what God allowed to exist in my life was an incredible amount of loneliness. And He showed me that He was the answer to loneliness in that moment.
Hey, we're going to go to a break. Folks, you want to hear more from Billy Mauldin. This is an incredible story. God has changed his life. He's His Father, and He's going to tell us about how He ministers to the NASCAR community. This is Truth Talk Live. Truth Talk Live You're listening to the Truth Network and truthnetwork.com Welcome back to Truth Talk Live. I'm Duane Carson. My ministries date the Word, and today it's my pleasure to host Truth Talk Live. We have a very special guest today, Billy Mauldin. He is the President and Senior Chaplain for Motor Racing Outreach.
That is the ministry to the NASCAR community. And he's been sharing with us a little bit about being involved there, and we're going to learn more here in just a moment, but he's been telling us about his testimony, how when he was in college, he got saved, and God used some circumstances to bring him to a place where he knew he needed the Lord. And it's not about religion, folks. It's about being born again. John 3.
You must be born again. Billy, thanks for sharing that. And again, he's at Las Vegas right now. They've got the big race out there this weekend. Trucks, Infinity, then the big cup race on Sunday. I'm a NASCAR fan, by the way, and we go to several races every year.
I don't know how you feel about NASCAR, but I find it to be one of the most exciting sports out there. If you got a question for Billy, 866-348-7884, 866-348-7884, give us a call and let us know what you're thinking. Billy, tell us now, how did you get involved with this NASCAR ministry?
You've been doing it for 26 years. Yeah, I actually started just a little bit before that. Probably, if all my time together probably approaches 28, 29 years, I started out volunteering. As I mentioned earlier on, I was an assistant youth pastor at a church in Charlotte, and one of my kids actually raced in a series called Legends Racing. And so I was kind of exposed to the ministry side of what goes on in racing through him and volunteering out at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That's where I met the folks with Motor Racing Outreach, and the gentleman that was running it at that time was a gentleman by the name of Max Elton. He was the founding chaplain of Motor Racing Outreach, and Max invited me to come do some other things with them. So I ended up doing Bible studies at a race shop.
It was a race team that was owned by three-time NASCAR champion Darryl Waltrip at that time. And later on, they asked me and my wife together to do a boat racing series called Unlimited Hydra Planes. And it was the first time that series had had a chaplain, so we spent some time together doing the Unlimited Hydra Planes series one summer. And at that time, I was just finishing up a congressional campaign for a gentleman that was running for U.S. Congress from North Carolina. And I had the option at that point in time to maybe go to Washington or be involved in the district office and stay involved in government and politics or to go full-time with Motor Racing Outreach. And I just felt in my heart that MRO was the direction I was supposed to go, and that's how I got to where I am now.
And I'll add this. It was interesting. When I took the job with MRO, I don't know why, but again, I really think the Holy Spirit moves in all of our lives in some very special and wonderful ways. Something inside of me just had this sense that I am not going to ever leave here until I just know that I'm supposed to go somewhere else. And I've never had that day in 26, 27 years where I felt like I was supposed to do anything else. As a matter of fact, I've always felt like I'm just where I was supposed to be.
And that's been really helpful for me personally because, like everybody in life, you have some days you'll want to remember forever, and some days you'd like to forget as quick as you can. And in some of the more difficult, challenging times, it was sort of that commitment, that promise that I made to the Lord that got me through some of the more challenging times. So, as the senior chaplain, what are some of the things that you, on a day-to-day basis, are looking to make happen for the NASCAR community? So, simply speaking, we are basically their church. If you ask a lot of folks that compete or work in NASCAR who MRO is, a lot of them will just say they're our church. And basically, our communities are, we travel, I mean, we're on the road 38 plus weekends a year, going from track to track, and city to city, and state to state. And so, we do not have a building, but anything and everything that a local church provides to people in their community, we provide to the NASCAR community. The only difference is that, you know, we're mobile and we're on the go, and sometimes it takes place at the track, sometimes it takes place at home, but back home in the race shops and so forth, we're involved in Bible studies, a lot of counseling.
We're turned to a lot of times when folks are looking for counseling with regards to maybe pre-marriage or marriage or anything that's going on in their lives, we're the ones we'll turn to for memorial services in the more difficult times. At the race track, we're present from the time a car is on the track until the last car is off the track. Obviously, to be there in the event of something, an accident or something happened, to be there to support the families and so forth, but also over the course of the weekend, we'll do chapel services for each of the racing series. So, for example, this weekend at Las Vegas, we'll actually do three chapel services, one today, one tomorrow, and one Sunday for the different racing communities. We'll be hanging out in the garage area.
A lot of folks just need somebody to talk to, and they just need five or ten minutes to bounce something off of you that's going on in their lives. So, you know, that kind of falls back underneath the counseling umbrella, but we'll do Bible studies, we'll do fan outreach events. We have women's and children's programming and family programming events at a lot of the race tracks. Every weekend is a little bit different, but the easiest way I can explain it, if it happens in your local church, then it probably happens at the race track and we're just the ones that facilitate it.
We just don't have a big building. This is so encouraging. I've got some connection through the years with NASCAR, and I've watched this take place.
Obviously, the biggest moment is always right before the race. There's a prayer, and it's such an encouraging prayer. It's not just one of those prayers that someone goes through the motion. You have picked someone to pray that really, how I describe it, they talk to God. And they talk to God about the event, but also about blessing America, about being a blessing to America and to our world. And so we've always known there's something different about NASCAR and that they have this respect for God. I guess I'd want to ask for maybe some of our listeners. This isn't just to the driver.
Your outreach is to, how far does this outreach go? On any given weekend, let's say approximately 3,000 people are traveling to the track as part of the racing event itself. And amongst that, it's made up of drivers, crew members, media, PR, support staff, officials, family members, friends, coach drivers, hauler drivers.
I could go on and on about the number of different jobs or professions that are part of making every weekend happen. And so yes, a lot of times what people see is what's more visible on television, like our engagement with drivers and so forth. But we're at the track for everybody. We're going to go to a break. Some of you were, this is it, but go to the app and listen to this at a different station. You don't want to miss as we talk with Billy Baldin about what's happening with MRO.
You're listening to the Truth Network and truthnetwork.com. Well, as my joy to welcome you back to truth talk live on this Friday afternoon. It's March the 14th and there's a big race getting ready to take place this Sunday in Las Vegas. But there's a truck race tonight, the infinity race on Saturday. And when you turn on the TV, you see a little bit of motor racing outreach.
But we're learning today. Motor racing outreach is the church to the NASCAR community. Three thousand or so when they travel and, you know, the NASCAR season is quite long. And these families, they have to just keep going from one city to another city. And we've got Billy Malden on the line and he's out of Las Vegas right now. And Billy, thanks for being with us today. Thanks for sharing your story and what's going on with motor racing outreach, how you got involved.
I'm curious as as you go from city to city. Do you already have like a chaplain, for instance, that when you get to Las Vegas, you're meeting somebody that's already there. That's more their ministry, not the whole all of NASCAR.
Well, we've got our team that travels with the racing communities weekend and week out. So our ministry is very relational based. Yeah, it takes time to build people trust with people in any ministry, you know, and to get people comfortable talking and open up to you. And so one of the things that's really great about the team that we have at MRO is we have a lot of longevity, a lot of years like myself with these communities so that they can get to where they can trust us.
Now, there are things and ways in which we will look to support or partner with folks in the local community. A lot of times in when we do our chapel services, we'll open up with worship music and we'll use local worship leaders for that. You mentioned earlier invocations, for example, there are times when before race will do the invocation. But many of the invocations are done by local pastors that are selected by the local track. So if you see an invocation before the race and you like that, well, the people to thank are truthfully the local track host for being willing to do that. And the broadcast partners, whether it's Fox or NBC or CW or somebody else for putting it on TV and of course NASCAR for allowing it and believing it as being an important part of our culture.
So they're the ones ultimately to thank. But then also outside the track, you also many of them, almost every race have a group called Raceway Ministries. They have their own website with things that are going on and they're focused on the fans outside the track. And we all work together to some degree and partner together to do all that we can on a race weekend to make sure that the fan that comes to the race that would normally be at church on Sunday still has a place to worship, whether they're inside the track or outside the track. But also there's obviously an evangelistic piece to this that a lot of folks are coming to the race because let's face it, they want to get away and be entertained for a few hours, but that entertainment is going to be over in a few hours and life's going to be back to the way it was before.
And if your life is not going well, like we all know it does and we've all experienced, the real answer to that is Jesus and a personal relationship with him. And so our hope in many cases with fans is take their passion and love for the sport and turn it into a passion and a love for Jesus. Not at the exclusion of the sport, but just Jesus a little bit more.
I like that. We're seeing a lot right now with different athletes taking time to first and foremost give glory to God when they have experienced a victory. We saw it with one person when they had gone through a loss and was being interviewed and just said, first off, I want to make sure everybody knows I still give glory to God, even though our team didn't win this game.
We saw a lot with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Chiefs owner's daughter. Each game day will come out and give a verse on her Instagram and just letting people know, hey, there is something more than this game. And there really is. There's more to life than the game.
And then there's eternity. You were at an event at Richard Children's Racing. It's where I first got to meet you. And you told me something about everything in NASCAR has a number. What is the MRO number? 316. Now, how did you get 316?
Anything that we do that we print out, hats, T-shirts, different things like that, we will put a number on it because numbers and sports go together. But our number is obviously 316, which is for John 316. And ultimately, that's what we're wanting everybody to know.
That's the message that we're wanting everybody to get. And we just use the number 316 because it just begs the question for people. What does 316 mean? And that opens up the door for the conversation that stands for John 316.
Well, I love it. This Sunday is March the 16th, 316, and we've got pastors all over the world that's going to be preaching John 316 because, again, that number. It's just a way of connecting scripture to a date so that it becomes more memorable. And I thought that was so cool when you told me MRO was 316 because it's God's greatest message to mankind. For God so loved the world that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. I'm going to be preaching in Fayetteville, Georgia, Sunday. And I can't wait to share this amazing message. This isn't a message of wrath.
God says, I don't want you to experience the wrath. I want you to be able to experience eternal life with me. Billy, you're not going to believe this, but we've got a phone call right now from a guy named Stu. Stu Epperson. Hey, guys, two of my favorite people on the radio. I'm driving, I'm about to pass this giant peach on listening to you guys loud and clear on the new 88.3 FM. I was listening in Greenville on 96.9, and I'm driving through Spartanburg and about to drive through Gaffney.
And I'm listening to you all, and this giant billboard on the right says, John 316, right when Billy said the numbers of the MRO. Well, you know, let me tell you just a little bit more behind when we got that. So a number of years ago, NASCAR began their idea of a playoff system to end the season, to try to bring some more drama to the sport and excitement for the fans. Well, when they originally started that, they called it the chase, the chase for the cup.
Yes. So that was the phrase, the chase. Well, we actually at that time did some T-shirts that said make the chase because that's what every driver wanted to do. They wanted to make the chase. They wanted to be in the playoffs, but it said make the chase. And then underneath it was the number 316.
How do you make the chase? You got to know the sun. And that's where that all kind of began to emerge and came together for us. I love it. Well, that's amazing. I just want to tell you guys how much I love you. And I'm just grateful for that. And it's neat that God, hey, God has been in pursuit of us. Think about the people that have prayed for for Dr. Carson and for Billy and for me. You know, we're here on the radio telling people about Jesus and at the at the racetrack in Vegas in 50 degree weather, sharing the good news of John 316 on 316 this Sunday, because God graciously pursued us.
And he so loved us that he gave his son for us, man. So love you guys. Just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you for all you're doing, Billy and Dr. Carson. Love you guys.
And I'm pumped about 316. Man, I've been telling all these preachers to preach on it or at least read it and share that verse with one person this week and watch what God does, right? Amen. Thanks, Stu. Thanks, Stu. Wow, Billy.
When you get the founder of Truth Network calling in, listen, I love that. I thought we were in trouble at first. I was thinking, well, what did we say? What did we do? Stu's calling in.
We're going to have to clean this thing up. Maybe we need to talk more about Jesus. Your ministry, I love how this just played out. Because so from the chase, you came up with an idea. And I think one of the things I want to convey to listeners is the way I see your ministry.
Again, there's creativity with it. How can I make the gospel known? And then building the relationships. We had Lou Holtz come and speak at Liberty. And here's this great coach of Notre Dame, great football coach of many schools, but known for Notre Dame. And he tells a story about a young man in Arkansas that did not want to talk to anybody. And finally, one day he brought him to his office and said, Son, talk to me.
What's going on? And he said, Well, sir, just before I came here, my dad died. Well, he didn't know that. He did not know that. And he said, Son, I didn't know. And he came back and said this to our student body. I'm sitting on the platform and he says, I learned a lesson.
Everybody that comes in asks a question. Can I trust you? And he didn't know if he could trust him.
And once he brought him to his office and sat down and talked with him, he realized, Hey, I can trust my coach. And it's all about you've got to build the relationships to share Jesus with people. Hey, we're going to be right back for our last segment here. If you've got a question for Billy Malden, MRO, the ministry, it's 1-866-348-7884.
Call us. Welcome back to Truth Talk Live Friday afternoon, March the 14th. 3-14, you think of Colossians 3-14. But above all these, put on love, which is the bond of perfection. That's your verse for the date. Colossians 3-14.
And I do ask you to be in prayer for this weekend as we come up on 3-16. The moment you hear that number 3-16, it's John 3-16. It's God's greatest message to mankind for God so loved the world that he gave.
Wow. He gave his only begotten son. I'm overwhelmed that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Invite people to church this Sunday. May your pastor share something on it.
I'm hearing of thousands that are going to be preaching on it. And it's the greatest message that any person could ever hear. I got to hear this message. Our guest today, Billy Malden, he got to hear this message. And his ministry, MRO, is 3-16. To let people know, John 3-16.
Billy, it has been a pleasure having you here today. When someone turns on the TV, they get that just a little glimpse. But I'm hoping they're getting a bigger picture that there's a whole group of people who want to have a ministry, a church, for the NASCAR community. And how could a listener right now say, you know what, I want to be praying for MRO. What are some of the big prayer requests that you would have for our listeners? Yeah, I'll tell you that when I get this question, what I would encourage, if you tune into a race and you can watch the beginning of the race, particularly when the invocation and the anthem is being played, there will be big wide camera shots of everybody on pit road.
That'll be drivers, teams, just everybody that's down there, including some fans and so forth. When you see that, realize that standing down there are people that are all over the spectrum when it comes to their faith in Jesus. Some know him. Some don't. Some have a lot of good seed planted.
Some don't. But when you see that moment, that's just the opportunity to pray for the word that's going forth in our community. That's what I would ask people to do. Pray for us. Pray for the Raceway Ministry groups that are working outside the track. Pray for all the other believers within the sport that are also sharing their faith in the garage area.
I mean that's the beauty of it. We're not the only ones at the track on the weekends that are sharing our faith. Those that are part of our Bible studies and our discipleship groups and are just believers themselves are sharing amongst the community as well. And so there's a lot going on.
There's a lot of different ways that lives can be impacted. And that's what I would pray is that just ask people to bind up the enemy, take authority over them on our behalf, and then pray that the word is going forth. We'll find good soil. We couldn't ask for anything more. We really appreciate it. And it's the prayers of those that are maybe never showing up at the track that are still making a difference in God's impact within the sport of NASCAR. I just love how you just phrased that. I don't think I'll be watching the beginning of a race ever the same now.
And again, to know there is someone around there, and who knows how that very day, I've done some chapel services at places like at South Boston. And so now that word has gone out. And they may be at the very moment while the race is getting ready to start, the seed is working.
And they're really starting to ponder. I heard an interview one time with race driver Mark Martin. And the interviewer said, Mark, there seems to be something different about most of you NASCAR drivers. And he was asking the question based on it seems like y'all live a different life.
You have more of a spiritual life. And Mark said, well, it is true. And he got real sober. And he said, you know, when we go out on that track, we don't know if we're going to come off the track. And we haven't had any major fatalities since Dale Earnhardt, which was just gut wrenching. But before that, I go back to the early 90s, it seems like every time we turned around, a NASCAR driver had died, gotten killed.
And I remember saying to my wife, it is kind of tough to be a NASCAR fan. And these guys put their lives on the line. And you have this incredible ministry of being there before they go out.
And if something does happen and my ministry at Liberty was far different, far different. But but being there for an athletic event, I remember a guy blowing at his knee, a football player. And you know what? Life just changed for them. And there's no more I'm not I'm not concerned about the game. I've got to get to the hospital, be with them.
Their world just changed. And that's what you're doing. You're being there.
So if something does happen, well, we know who can help them through this. And but also helping them to grow. You have children's ministry. Can you quickly tell us a little bit about your children's ministry?
Absolutely. A lot of the folks that compete in the sport, drivers, crew chiefs, others, they want to be able to have a decent family life as well. And some are fortunate enough to be able to bring their kids and their wives, everybody to the track with them. And so we provide programing on the weekends where families can be families or singles can have a place to go when they need somebody to talk to. But I mean, we're comprehensive. We're there from everybody, you know, male, female, young, old, married, single.
You know, whatever your job, whatever your role is, they know the MRO name and the people that stand behind that brand are there for them to help them with their spiritual journey and their walk through life. And coming back to 316 for a moment, you know, you can never share that too much because how many times did you and I probably hear John 316 before John 316 registered with us? And that's the beauty. You can never say it too much because one day it'll connect with people. And for those in our sport, coming back to those drivers in the statement Mark Martin made, listen, safety's come a long way in our sport and drivers are way more safe today than they were years ago. But yet on X number of times a year, we still go to tracks like Talladega and Daytona where the speeds go well beyond what anybody could imagine and the racing is close. And it's always reminders to them that, you know, life is something to be treasured because it can disappear on any of us for any reason very quickly. Yeah, NASCAR brings a great reminder of the fragility of life. It's fragile.
It's a breath, goes by fast. I want to go back to something you said you got started by being a volunteer. Is there a way for someone to get involved with Motor Racing Outreach as a volunteer right now?
What can they do if they wanted to volunteer? Yeah, most of our folks that work with us started out working in other series or local tracks like South Boston that you just mentioned. And so if they go to our website, motorracingoutreach.com, they will see a tab in there called Motor Racing Outreach Association. And those are men and women that are working at local tracks and other racing series in partnership with us. They're helping support the overall mission of sharing the gospel through the platform of motor sports all over the country and matter of fact up into Canada and other areas. So there are ways you can get involved not only with us, but you can get involved with Raceway Ministries and all that information can be found at our website. Okay, so listeners, if you're interested in being involved with a tremendous ministry when the race comes to your town, they're looking for volunteers, Motor Racing Outreach. Go to that website and check that out.
Who knows where you might be 26 years from now. Billy, I saw something that you've said as we start to wrap up this program. Sometimes you just have to take time to ponder the things of God.
What do you mean by that? That comes from a study or a chapel message that I did just recently with regards to Mary and all that was going on in her life as the mother of Jesus as things unfolded early on. And the scripture simply says she pondered all that was happening in her life.
And basically that was a word that I thought was an old southern word, but it turns out it's got a lot of rich history in it. But basically it means to meditate, to think about, to not just let it go by you quickly, but to hold on to that thought or that experience and allow God to cause it to explode in your heart and your mind. And it's in that process of pondering the things of God that they move from our head often to our heart and they become more than thoughts, but they become a reality for us. And it's just something that I noticed that Mary had a tendency to do and I could see why.
Because God was doing such incredible things in her life, it took a lot of thinking to understand it. And I think that's the way it is for all of us. God's doing more in our life sometimes than we could ever imagine. But if we'll slow down and think about him, ponder him, ponder his words, it'll all begin to take in a little more focus and a healthy way to give us strength for our faith and our journey. What an excellent conclusion to this show, to challenge our listeners.
Let's pause, let's think about what is God really doing and see it. And you're sharing this with the NASCAR community and I hope we've got a much bigger view today.
