Charlie Kirk has gone to heaven. It was tragic. It was gruesome. An assassination, cold-blood murder. with thoughts about that is Really one of our Christian leaders of our day who stepped up his game.
Who's a longtime friend, and he heads the Freedom Center or the Standing for Freedom Center. On the campus of Liberty University, Ryan Helfenbein. Ryan, What was your reaction when you heard about the death and you saw what happened with Charlie Kirk? Give us your raw reaction. Wow.
Well, Stu, thank you first of all for Affording me the opportunity to talk about Charlie, a personal, close, personal friend of mine, and a friend to so many. Uh and I, like many people, was in complete and total shock. It's horrific what happened. And I will say that it just. It didn't seem real.
And uh, and so that is very, that emotion is still very raw, and it's uh. It's with a lot of us. We're feeling the tremendous grief. of that loss. I'm so thankful.
For his life, I'm so thankful for what he lived for and for what he died for. And We're talking about them today. Ultimately Because not just because of the man he was, but because of what Christ did through him. Charlie Kirk, he was Certainly he was a political uh activist and advocate. He was somebody who was a leader in the conservative movement, but most importantly, he would want to be known for his Christian faith.
His Christian witness, his testimony. He believed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. And he believed in the exclusivity of that gospel: that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Charlie believed that.
And Stu, I'm reminded of something, just a tweet that was put out there a few days before. Jesus Christ. died, he defeated death so that we might live. That's something that speaks so much about the truth of the gospel, but what Charlie believed. I was with them in Korea.
just days before his death and he was speaking Truth and life, and encouraging young Koreans, South Korean students, parents, pastors to stand strong. to not give in. uh to the tyranny, the pressure. that the government is currently putting on the church. And so he was trying to encourage them to embolden their faith.
And um He's an extraordinary man who leaves a tremendous legacy. And I think we've only just begun to learn about the impact. the eternal impact that he left on our lives. Wow, and the the The kingdom work that you did was quite Interesting how it was woven together with what he did. He was there at the campus.
I believe he's Dr. Charlie Kirk, thanks to the honorary doctorate he got from Liberty University. And there's a video of him throwing a football 50 yards almost. Pretty remarkable. quite an athlete.
I first sat down with him in your green room, Ryan, when you were doing an event back earlier on. It was called something different, I believe, like the Falkirk Center, and now it's the Standing for Freedom Center. And he was very involved. He was very excited. about just the the movement and the support And Ryan, the balance, this is real important.
There's a lot of hate coming toward Charlie Kirk, just sad from believers. I just had one of my team members at the Truth Network said, Stu, people at my church are like, I'm not sympathetic at all. I'm not sad at all about all this happening. And he's like, how do I engage them? Because there's this disconnect.
That Charlie really stepped into headfirst on this kind of wokeness and brokenness that's kind of snuck into the church where pastors aren't. You know, they say, well, if I speak against, if I speak up for marriage and if I speak against killing our young, our babies, and abortion, then I'm political. That's political talk. Charlie and you guys at the Freedom Center wouldn't have any of that, and he ended up being a. A real just a stellar go-to guest and thought leader and chapel speaker.
I guess you guys were buddies. You guys hung out a lot, didn't you? We did. Of occasions and opportunities to hang out. And you're right.
He was a part of that founding, that formulation of having the vision to put. To put together what is now called the Standing for Freedom Center. And it was right at the intersect of the church and the public square. And he recognized that we needed a more robust Theological Foundation. For political engagement, that the church needed a For lack of a better word, hermeneutic.
You know, it needed a biblical language and lens by which we. Uh, interpret ultimate reality. It's, you know, it's you can only do so much. Talking about conservatism with Christ is not at the center. You can only do so much.
Charlie went further than that, and he demanded more from our answers. And I think that's important to remember. When many people, and you pointed it out, and when many people, wanted to sort of equivocate and run to the middle. You know, oh, both sides have their problem. Oh, there's evil on the left, there's evil on the right.
We've heard that over and over and over again. Really, who's perpetrating all the violence right now? Charlie Kirk didn't equivocate. He ran to the truth. even when it was unpopular.
even if it was going to cost him something. And there are Christians, you're right, who called him a provocateur. They you know, saying that somehow by his boldness, I'm thinking of people like John the Baptist, Think about Stephen. Um blaming them. Blaming, can you imagine blaming them?
For being a bold witness to the gospel. Can you imagine blaming those men?
Well, it's your fault. You died. It's your fault that people picked up rocks to stone you. How incredible, how callous. That some might be in this moment, that a moment of such heartache.
in sorrow. in pain. That people would already be ready to pick up stones yet again. and throw them again. I think that the long tail on this is going to spell embarrassment.
And many woke churches who stew, quite frankly, Wanted a genuflect back in 2020. During the quote unquote mostly peaceful protests, they wanted to. To virtue signal that they were down with woke. and give high praise to George Floyd. And they're silent, or they're even critical right now about a guy like Charlie Kirk.
It's just incredulous. And so I just wanna encourage people, I don't wanna leave on a bad note. Charlie Gives us reason, especially for this Gen Z generation, to be so. hopeful. This next generation, I'm so encouraged by.
Their youthful exuberance, their passion. Their hunger for the truth. They want authenticity. And you know what they don't want, Stu? They don't want to be gaslit.
They don't want to be lied to. They're sick of the lies. They're sick of being passionate. Patronize. They're sick of.
People standing in positions of authority. in pretending either not to notice or to not care. about the real problems and the real evil. that is going on in society. They want leaders like Charlie Kirk, who will tell them the truth.
Even if it hurts. Even if it's unpopular. And I think the Gen Z generation, we're going to see. Revival at a scale that we've never seen before or haven't seen in a really long time. Thank you.
Yeah, that's tremendous.
Well, I want you to talk about this moment In history, and kind of the significance of it. This is a. Th this'll this uh the r the celebration of live service by now has likely taken place. There's There's been no buildings burned. There's been no...
Police officers attacked. There's been no cars destroyed, property destroyed. Ryan Heffelenbein, what's up with that? If we're so full of hate and if we're so. angry at everyone and attacking everyone, why aren't we Why aren't we on the rampage?
Why are there people on their knees lighting candles? Offering prayer. Sector University sponsoring nights of prayer. Liberty University packing out them all. High Point University had a big night.
Um the the night uh I believe the the uh weekend after Charlie had gone to heaven. Talk about that and talk about this moment in history, kind of as a wake-up call. Charlie's got a megaphone from heaven, Ryan Heffelbein. What would he say? to everyone listening right now.
Well I want Say this, I want to interject one thing here because I want to mention Erica because the courage of that woman, that godly woman. to speak even within two days of of his tragic Assassination to get up there and be so brave and so bold. And Stu, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Erica because she was a founding. Fellow with the Standing for Freedom Center. She was there in the beginning.
They weren't married at the time. But she was his bride to be. And she was a critical part of what we were doing and what we were starting here at Liberty University. Graduate of Liberty University, you know, in her master's degree, had done some doctoral work as well in Christian leadership at the School of Divinity. Erica is a big part of Liberty.
And to say to the world, we're not backing down, this is the significance of the moment. You asked this question. This moment to know that within 24 hours, 30,000 applications came online. to start new chapters worldwide. New Zealand, Australia.
South Korea. Uh Poland. Britain. I'm naming places where there were prayer vigils where hundreds of thousands of people from around the world, not even all of them speaking the same language. but they saw the same courage.
They recognize that this man. Has left his mark on the world, not because of the greatness of Charlie Kirk, because of the greatness of Jesus Christ, what Christ was doing through him. We're going to remember this for a long time, and it's certainly not over. This is like the 1960s.
Some people have compared it to that when MLK was shot and assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, when RFK was shot and assassinated in Los Angeles, California, when JFK was shot and assassinated in Dallas, Texas. But there's a different kind of picture. This is different. This wasn't a high political figure. This wasn't a figure of the civil rights movement.
This is a. A kid who didn't go to college. A kid who was trying to inspire a younger generation. Against youth rebellion. Against Uh and against woke ideology, against socialism.
To embrace American exceptionalism, to embrace. uh constitutional freedom To embrace God's vision. For what it is to be male and female created in the image of God. You know, He has one message to young men. Was to man up.
His message to women. Is to embrace feminine beauty and what God has ultimately instilled in them as women. created in God's image. to embrace their biblical roles, complementarity. Get married, have kids, start a family.
This is the new youth rebellion. that Charlie wanted us to instill through Be biblical. Lens through a moral vision for conservatism and to bring about cultural renewal in this country. That's what he was really about. I mean, I could go on and on and on about his brilliance and his vision, his passion.
I really do believe. That we're on a precipice of a new kind of revival in this country. But we were already seeing inklings of it before. But now We have the blood of a martyr. That has been spilt.
And I believe not only is it going to inspire many, I believe, Stu, more than anything, that God will vindicate his sacrifice. And uh We have a better testimony. Right now, today, than the left. As much as they want to disparage, divide, and tear down, our message, our gospel is stronger. Amen.
Thank you, Ryan, for these words. Give the website for the Freedom Center. Folks want to. learn more. They'll see a lot of uh clips with Charlie when they go there because you all have You all really are championing the faith, Jesus first, of course.
and then how to speak to public policy. How to speak to Christian worldview. How do you even engage politics, but with a with a salt and light. in a speech seasoned with grace type approach. Ryan, give that, and thank you for hopping on with us today.
Absolutely. I want to encourage you. Go to standingforfreedom.com. This is an organization like Turning Point that Charlie helped to found. Uh, distinctively Christian, certainly in the ethos of Liberty University, and our founder, Dr.
Jerry Falwell. And I would also encourage people to go to liberty.edu. Let me tell you one thing. Charlie said this more than anything: college today is an indoctrination camp or a scam, if, if. You don't send your students to the right college.
And so so much of what he was railing against wasn't Christian education. Christian education is real discipleship. And don't miss that.
So he was encouraging people to get a real education that has real value in the world. Look no further than Liberty University. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Alex McFarland, apologist, author, talk show host. Man of God who's inspiring a generation to follow Christ was on stage with Charlie Kirk.
not even a month ago, less than that, Alex It was riveting. The place was packed in Myrtle Beach. And you also, like so many of us, were shocked by the news. of Charlie Kirk's assassination. How did it hit you, Alex?
And take us back to that moment when you guys were on the stage together.
Well, well, thank you. You know, part of the reason that our our summer speaker series, Conversations That Matter, has been so successful was because of the marketing we've been doing on the Truth Network, and it has brought attendees from seventeen states. And on Thursday night, August 21st, in front of a packed Alabama theater in Myrtle Beach, Charlie Kirk was there, and we were backstage. We recorded a show, and then we prayed together, and we went out. Charlie spoke for about 35 minutes, then we came out and he and I.
Know dialogued and bantered for about 40 minutes, and we took questions for an hour, but we were on stage. Charlie, Kirk, and I. And we, by God's grace, We've shared the stage on four previous occasions. I first spoke for TPUSA. in the spring of 22.
Charlie called me in the fall of 21. And asked me to speak for a Turning Point USA event, but we were on the stage August 21. And he said. If somebody shoots me and kills me, or somebody were to kill Alex, We can't be silent that a lost world needs Jesus. Um they very often get angry.
At the sound of the truth, and that violence is like the last weapon in the toolkit. Of dictators and despots. They can't, you know, he said that the woke policies have been detrimental. Their positions are indefensible. The last tool in their toolkit is violence.
But he said if if I or Alex gets silenced Uh the church and the patriots must continue proclaiming truth. In a loving yet powerful way. I mean, it was just unreal. We were watching the film footage over the weekend, Stu, and I mean, it was like a gut punch because It was almost like I mean, and you know, two and a half weeks after he made those statements, Um that assassin, you know, took him out so tragically. But we're living in a world where more than ever We have to be committed to know.
and proclaim and impart truth. even if our life depends on it. Alex, a lot of people are asking, what now? What's next? A lot of people are like the guy we would go to the campuses and hear and speak and talk to and ask questions, and the guy who would take on anybody and graciously.
Talk about things that no one else wanted to talk about, and always bring up Jesus, he's gone to heaven. What now, Alex? What do you see as this moment as this groundswell of support of young people all over the world? Is pouring in. What do you see happening next, Alex?
What's your read of the situation?
Well You know, it's tragic. I was literally going on a live radio show last week when we got a text that Charlie Kirk had been shot, and then. From a friend of Donald Trump, we were texted and told that he had passed probably about 10 minutes before it hit the news wire. And so I went into a live radio show just kind of in a in a daze, I mean, not believing what I was hearing. And still I have to tell you, on the Wednesday before.
Charlie got shot. I mean, exactly one week today before he got shot, he texted me and he was asking for some information about Israel and.
Some Bible verses about the seed of Abraham, and he said, Hey. Great event. I hope to see you again soon. God bless you. My friend Bill Federer, great historian, and he and I were on.
God TV out of Jerusalem last Thursday night, September 11th. Bill Federer showed me a text. The day Charlie got shot, two hours before he got shot, Charlie texted Bill Federer. Uh 1 Corinthians 16:9, it says, A great and effectual door is opened for me, but there are many adversaries.
So to your question, Stu, what do we do?
Well, number one, we keep on loving Jesus. loving his great commission. We keep on being a witness. We we take no thought. For our life.
Uh Jesus is looking after his church. And we are we are protected and invincible until our time here is done. I will say this, and you knew him, I knew him. I never was anywhere with Charlie Kirk that he didn't show. Share the gospel, explain salvation.
you know, even the night that we were the last night we were together, August twenty one, Which was probably the last non-T. TP USA event he ever did. He told me, he said, I've got three things: the White House, Mar-a-Lago, and Turning Point USA.
So we were very blessed. To get him on August 21. And the funny thing, our event was going to be Saturday, August 23rd, or Friday, August 22nd. And he told me, he said, I've got to be home for my daughter's third birthday. Can it be Thursday, August 21st?
This was January 1st. We were planning this and we said, yeah, you bet. We'll take any day you can give. But Charlie Kirk would say this: that we need to pray for that shooter to get saved and his boyfriend. The Tyler Robinson is lost.
His quote boyfriend God help us is lost. Charlie would say, keep on keeping on for God and country, but pray for these people to get born again because. They're on their way to hell. And we would not wish that on anybody.
So I know Um You know, loving Jesus. growing in Christ and getting souls saved. That was our job, that is still our job. And we are victorious in Jesus Christ. Alex, you have a heart for pastors.
I know Charlie had a heart for pastors. What do you say to pastors trying to put all this together? They don't want to do a political big rally in their church. But they they also know they need to speak out about these cultural issues. about the truth.
about life, about marriage. How do they walk that balance? Because Charlie didn't just go talk about politics, he talked to people about, I mean, I've been watching videos of him. Talking to atheists about the existence of God, about the gospel, and how to be saved, and how to know you're saved, and these kinds of things. How do you do both of those?
He seemed to be able to hold those together, even though he had a lot of folks in the church that criticized him. and whatnot. Give us a a final call here to the balance. Between walking, you know, speaking of public policy, but also keeping Jesus first, Christ as King, the cross above the flag.
Well, same. You know, I think we have to give a fully orbed biblical worldview. And our message is not just Believe in Jesus and you'll go to heaven years from now. Although that's the gospel, Christ died for our sins. And I would say to anybody who hears this, Program.
I mean, listen, everybody, if you've never trusted Christ, do that today. Jesus is as close by as a prayer. And every human Jesus said, We must be born again if we would see the kingdom of God. And so you can go to my website, alexmacfarland.com, click the tab, What Does God Say? What does God say?
and you can know how to be saved. If you need clarification on that, reach out to us, alex at alexmacfarland.com. But Stu, to your point, what we pastors and leaders need to do, we have to give the full story. And the full story is, yes, salvation is a free gift. And if we receive salvation, then for the rest of our life, every believer is on mission for God.
I mean, we really are like John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church. He said, we have nothing to do but the saving of souls. That that's our mission. And that may Uh Involve persecution. It may involve ridicule and friends that don't understand us and people, even family members, that are critical.
But um I do think to all my fellow pastors, and Stu, you know, I've pastored two churches, I've spoken in 2012. 2200. Pastors, I beg, I plead You might not want to talk about moral, social, and political issues, but you have to. Because in the Bible, God's holy word. There are moral, social, and political issues.
And the Bible says the fear of man brings a snare. Come on, pastors. Don't be afraid. Don't be timid. Get in that pulpit and do what pastors are charged with doing, which is evangelizing the lost and equipping the saved.
Listen, this is not a red or blue Republican-Democrat issue. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Human life is sacred, and unless it's self-defense or national defense, no one has the right to murder another person, and that would include the murder of the unborn. Gender is. Binary, male and female.
End of story. People that are transgender are. At least demonically oppressed, maybe demon-possessed. And we have to call that out. And we are to fight darkness.
That's You know, Matthew 11, verse 12, John 16, 33. And we, the American church, which I love so dearly, Stu. But it's not just liminating cookies anymore. It's not just. you know vbs on a summer afternoon it's a spiritual battle And when that battle comes to our doorstep, as it really has, we have to bravely But yet decisively speak truth, live truth, in fact, lay down our lives for truth.
Oh.
Well said. Alex, best way for folks to watch your interview. One of the last public appearances of Charlie Kirk before he went to heaven. How can they find it and learn more about you and get your amazing books? And have you come speak to their churches and their campuses?
Oh, thanks, man. My website, alexmcfarland.com. Sue, we're on our way to Mississippi for the Leak County Citywide Crusade. We just had 1,200 kids in seven youth camps, 384 salvation decisions this summer. We've got the speaker series October 3rd with Lauren Green and a whole host of Major guests for October 3rd, our tribute to Charlie Kirk and the final in our 2025 speaker series.
So, my own tour schedule, our radio shows with you. And others, it's all at alexmacfarland.com. Plus, to forgot, if I could mention it, October 7, my 21st book comes out, to God be the glory. It's 100 Bible Questions on Prophecy and the End Times. Published by Broad Street Publishers.
It's at Barnes Noble, Amazon, everywhere. But if you go on the websites that sell books, Google My Name, October 7, the 21st book. And I just would ask people to not only help make it a strong book release, but get equipped to present, explain, and defend the faith. Should the top of the block? You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com.
He preaches the gospel boldly on college campuses. He's out there in the open air sharing Christ. I have seen this man in action, I've stood with him. I've supported him. I love his ministry.
He's been on the show a lot, and he likes so many. in our country, in our world. are mourning the loss of Charlie Kirk, really heaven's gain. I mean, he's with the Lord. But Doug Elks, as you saw all that Unfold and happen in real time, you know, now because we all have these devices and everyone's seeing things and there's things we wish we could unsee.
What hit your heart when you saw that and when you heard about Charlie Kirk going to heaven? Yes, dude, it's been a heavy couple weeks, to be honest. And not only just the world, but our nation, even the state of North Carolina, there's been a lot going on. We saw the death of Charlie, but also the young lady that lost her life in Charlotte, North Carolina, right down the road from where we live. And those moments are devastating.
They're challenging. They're heavy. They sometimes make many people question what's going on. But ultimately, specifically to your question about Charlie. I celebrate his life and I celebrate the man that he is and the man that he represents.
And he represents the man Christ Jesus who lived a perfect life free from sin. And I was so deeply encouraged by the way that he stood up for the faith. He never backed down. And I believe that, was he a perfect man? Of course not.
No one is. I'm not a perfect man. I've sinned and I need a Savior and his name is Jesus. But what I'll always honor Charlie in is that he always stood up and he always told the truth. And he told the truth about Christ.
And so that's where I'm excited. And I believe we're seeing a new generation of hunger and boldness come from men like him that stood up and stood all the way to death. Doug, some people say that, hey, let's take this guy out. You know, the enemy might think, hey, we're going to take this guy out so all these other people like you will stop talking about Jesus. We'll stop making so much noise about the Lord.
We'll stop wearing those obnoxious shirts. Jesus is king. I find myself wearing those shirts. Jesus wins now all over the place.
Someone DM'd me.
Someone messaged me on Instagram saying, Hey, I saw you in that shirt. I've been seeing people at my school wearing these shirts. There's a big truth network on the back of it. I didn't realize it would be that big. But, Doug, I mean, does it, does it, when you saw that happen to Charlie?
Did it make you think, hey, I'm in the wrong line of work? I need to go do something else. I mean, how did that hit you in terms of your perspective? You walk out there, you don't have all these security guys, you're not behind bulletproof glass when you preach the gospel to a crowded stadium on a college campus. I mean, does it cause you to kind of reconsider that, take inventory?
Maybe you're doing the wrong thing. Absolutely not. I love Jesus Christ and I will die for Jesus Christ. And I think at the end of the day, what I saw through his life is the same level of courage and boldness that I pray that the Lord would bestow upon me. And we're seeing it right now.
I mean, we're seeing revival take place. We're praying that it would continue, but I believe we're in revival. And, you know, there's a verse that I shared this morning. We were at North Davidson High School, and I said we preached out of Matthew 6, but the verse I opened up with was Psalm 85, 6 and 7. Will you not revive us again?
Let your people, sorry, that your people may rejoice in you. Show us your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us your salvation. We're in a season, in a moment right now, in an hour right now, where people are coming to know Jesus Christ like we've never seen before.
So, what we need to do as believers, as followers of Christ, is we need to be even more bold. We need to be even more courageous to share the truth because people are turning to the truth right now. Dark speak to My children. college age.
Some of them still are, you know.
Some of them are still Really having a hard time. Like, I talked to a lot of kids in tears after this. They were texting and calling me. Will you talk to believers out there? Two people I want you to talk to: believers who are really struggling, like this really hit them hard, and then they have friends who are celebrating.
They're like, oh, yeah, he got his, you know, and college professors are celebrating. I mean, this is a man who had a wife, had little kids. And they're laughing and and they're carrying on and and using foul language. To mock and to celebrate someone being cut down like that in cold blood.
So talk to, if you would, believers who are struggling, young people that you talk to a lot in your demographic. And then I want you to talk to those who don't know Christ who maybe they didn't like Charlie Kirk and give a message to them, would you? Absolutely. I think, you know, the one thing that we can all come to know is the truth. And the truth is this.
Jesus told us in John 16, 33, He said, Take heart. In me, you may have peace. You will have peace. But in this world, you will have trouble. I have overcome the world.
And I think that's what I can just, that's what I can cling to right now. If you're looking for peace, even in the midst of heartbreak, in the midst of devastation, you can seek and know Jesus Christ in a personal way and not in a religion, in a real relationship by faith. And you can have real peace that surpasses all understanding. And you can have it right now, today. And the peace that you can have today will also give you the hope and excitement for the future, for what is to come for those that do know Christ.
And that is a world that is heaven, that is eternity in the presence of God with no pain and no suffering and no evil. The evil one knows that his time is coming soon to be ended. It's not forever. And so I think that's why we're seeing so many people act out against the things of God is because we're living in a time where there is a real battle going on, and it's not flesh and blood. It's a spiritual battle.
And so we need to continue to seek Jesus, be empowered by the Holy Spirit to let people know about the goodness of God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
So Charlie Kirk, if he had a megaphone from heaven, where he is right now. What would he tell this next generation? What would he tell? All the believers out there about the importance of sharing the gospel, simply telling others about Jesus. In these crazy times.
What would he say? What would you say? what would you think that would be? Yeah, I believe that he would say, continue to be bold, to stand strong, to press on in the faith and not to back down and to stand for truth. We're not standing for man, we're not standing for woman, we're not standing for our own, our own ideas.
We are standing for the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life, who came down from the glory of heaven, and he met us in our devastation, he met us in our brokenness, he met us in our sin, and he lived a perfect life to step up to a cross and die, to shed his perfect blood, and then to be raised to life. We were reading and preaching out of Matthew 6 today, and in the section where it talks about do not worry, 6:25 through 34. And the phrase Jesus preaches the phrase do not worry three times. The reason I sit here today and I interview with you is because I don't worry about my salvation, I don't worry about my sin because Jesus Christ, when he died on that cross, he didn't stay dead. On the third day, he was raised to life.
The resurrection power brought him from death to life, and now he's seated in heaven at the right hand of God. And the Bible says that he's coming back, and I believe it's soon.
So now is the time to be bold for Christ and to share the love of Jesus.
So connect with Jesus Christ. That's who. We are here to introduce you to because he changes everything. And when you follow Doug Elks, follow him on social, he's everywhere, man. I tell you, we love what you're doing, preaching the gospel through your ministry of AIM, all over the country, all over the world, through basketball, through sports, to teams.
