Have you ever wondered why some people seem to age slower? Like they figured out some secret the rest of us missed?
Well, it turns out someone actually did, and it starts with a melon. Yep, a melon. There's a rare French melon that stays fresh four times longer than the fruit you and I buy at the store. Scientists discovered it produces an extraordinarily high level of a super antioxidant called SOD, the kind that helps defend skin from the visible signs of aging. And get this: Meaningful Beauty partnered with world-renowned French cosmetic specialist Dr.
Jean-Louis Sabah to capture that melon's youth-preserving power in a skincare line you can actually use every day.

From the principal Toyota Studios, it's morning in Memphis with Todd Starnes. And good morning, Memphis. It is Todd Starnes. Happy Friday to you, everybody. And I hope you're ready for a great weekend.
Before we get there, though, we have a lot of fun in store for you, a lot of news and information to share. In the coming hour together. And then, of course, again at 11 o'clock, 11 to 2 o'clock for our national show. And want to say thank you for being understanding yesterday. Had an event early, early yesterday morning.
And let me say, when the students here in the Mid-South ask me to do something, I'm going to do my very best to try and make that happen. And so yesterday morning, had a great honor and opportunity to speak to the Turning Point USA chapter, the Club America at Collierville High School, and just had a wonderful time. Had a huge crowd of kids. And K-Wham fed them breakfast, the Chick-fil-A. And may I also give a shout out to the owners of Booyah's.
And if you haven't been to Booyah's, the food is off the charts great. They opened up their restaurant super early, like 6:15 yesterday morning. For the kids. Those kids, those high school kids, packed out that place at 6:15 in the morning. They met.
We talked about the election, the midterms. We talked about the rise of socialism. The students asked some great questions, some probing questions, and we just had a wonderful time.
So that's where I was yesterday morning and am glad to be back with you. Then last night, yesterday was a long day. Then last night, just had a wonderful, wonderful time. I was the master of ceremonies at the Confidential Care Gala event. That was held at Germantown Baptist Church.
And around 800 people turned out great to see and meet a lot of our great listeners who were there to support an incredible ministry.
So, and now here we are today.
So, thank you again for all the kind words. And thank you for listening to KWAM, our team here working very hard to bring you local news. But also to bring you some intelligent news as well. And because let me tell you something: fake news is a huge problem. And we've got a couple of fake news stories that I want to start out with.
And first of all, I want to address the hysteria. At Omiss. It is off the charts insane. And I was trying to figure out where all of this was coming from. I mean, the allegations, the rumor mill is just awesome.
Off the charts. And the reason why is because of Fox News channel.
So Fox News has, and they do this, and they've done this for decades. They love crime news, and they especially love crime news when it impacts. A certain demographic of young people. And if you are a blonde, attractive female, there's a pretty good chance Fox News, if you disappear, Fox News is going to come looking for you.
Somebody like me disappears, Fox News is not going to they're like, okay, what what else is going on? In the world, I mean, that's just the reality of it.
So, Fox said, they sent reporters down to Ole Miss. And it's first of all, it's a horrible, horrible tragedy. Two Ole Miss students found dead in separate incidents. And they also said that there was a package of some sort of a substance recovered at both scenes. There is.
There is no evidence right now that that That substance had anything to do with the deaths, it may, but right now there's no proof because they don't have the toxicology reports and all the other reports back.
So, anybody that's even suggesting at this time, it's all just conjecture, it's all just speculation. And of course, Fox is going with it. And then you had a situation where a young lady decided that she was going to reveal what happened to her at a local bar in Oxford. Do we have that audio?
Alright, let's play that place. My name is Mary Harvey. I'm a freshman here at the University of Mississippi. Later into that night, around the time when the game ended, I do not remember a single thing. and I was told by a boy that was there that I fell down and the bouncers in that bar picked me up and threw me outside on the curb by myself.
And then shortly later I was told by my mother that two girls found me outside and called her and then they called the cops, Oxford Police Department. And then the cops put me in the back seat on an Uber all by myself and shipped me off to my dorm. where the Uber driver apparently had to get other students to help her carry me into my dorm, put me in the bed. And then later after that, my roommate got in the shower and she said while she was in the shower, I went missing. And she left the dorm to find me and was searching everywhere, searched every floor.
But on her way back from searching, she found me passed out in the hall of my dorm. And I have asked multiple times, I've tried multiple times to get the camera footage and nobody will let me see it. 100%. It is so bad. Oxford is getting terrible and it's such a pretty place that it shouldn't be like this.
People should feel safe here and want to live here. But as of now, I don't even feel safe in my dorm building. All right.
So Fox took all of that, and I mean, what she described was horrifying. I mean, if you believe her, I mean, just I mean, who knows how many young ladies are being drugged at bars in Oxford and these these very, very evil people having their way with the young female students. Just a slight big, huge gaping problem with everything that you heard, which, by the way, is on Fax's website. Fax is is still highlighting all of this. The police department says none of it happened.
They said none of this is true. And I want you to step back for a moment. I'm going to get to the police report. And the reason I'm doing this, we've been getting correspondence here from you, our great listeners. Starnes, why aren't you guys all over what's happening, the huge scandal that's happening at Ole Miss?
And this is the reason why we were waiting to get official. Official reports from the university, from the police departments, from law enforcement, and from the medical examiner's office. And again, that is just responsible journalism, is all that is.
So now you have the police department coming out of it. They had to release a statement about this. And they said, look, when officers encountered the individual, and this is all on body cam, so they do have all the body cam footage. When officers encountered the individual, she did not report that her drink had been tampered with, that she had been assaulted, or that a crime had occurred. Officers asked if she was okay.
She indicated she was and that she was intoxicated. Our officers remained with Earth. Pardon me throughout the encounter. They provided her with water, spoke with her. Communicated with a family member and helped arrange transportation.
We're going to take a break.
Some of the deepest wounds our veterans carry are the ones we can't see. The men and women who served this country often come home dealing with the lasting effects of that service, and they deserve our support that lasts just as long. The Core Medical Foundation provides wellness resources and medical care for veterans and first responders facing those challenges, making sure the people who fought for us don't have to fight alone. Their Core Freedom Fundraiser goes even further, helping kids battling cancer and families facing hard times. Here's how you can join the mission.
For just $5 a ticket, you're in the running for some serious hardware. Prize 1 is a Sons of Liberty MK1 Recce with an EOTEC, plus a Canok Mete MCP Prime. Prize 2 is a Genesis Arms Ronin 12 gate with an EOTEC and a Huxworth suppressor. Go to CoreGunraffle.com and grab your tickets. Every dollar goes straight to the mission, and it closes on October 14th.
Support the mission. Support the families. Hold the line. That's CoreGunraffle.com. All right.
Sorry about that. Had a little something in the throat there. Sweet mercy. Good to be back with you. I'm Todd Stearns.
And I want to finish this thought here on Ole Miss. And we've got a lot of other news to get to. But again, just the irresponsibility of the national media coming in here and fomenting all of this mass hysteria.
So, just I want you to think through all of this. And again, the Oxford Police Department releasing a statement saying everything this young woman said did not happen. And we have the body cam footage to prove all of this, along with eyewitnesses. By the way, they also provided her they remained with her. They communicated with a family member for on her behalf, helped arrange transportation and remained with her until that transportation arrived.
Oxford police say that the officers never treated the situation as a joke and that the young woman was never placed alone in an empty vehicle. A middle-aged couple was also present, and the female ride-share driver was in communication with her family during the process. Oxford Police say the investigation into the alleged drink tampering did not begin until Monday when Harvey filed a police report. And they said and also, she's claiming that girls are getting drugged and raped every single weekend. Police said there is absolutely No evidence of that.
Quote: At the time, we don't have evidence supporting claims that women are routinely being drugged in Oxford every weekend or every day.
However, every individual report will be taken seriously and investigated based upon the available evidence. And again, they encourage people to call out to the Oxford Police Department.
So, a couple of questions for this young lady. Why did she not file a report the very next day? Why did she wait until Monday or Tuesday? Also, If in fact these allegations are true and that all of these girls are being attacked and assaulted, where are the police reports? Where are these victims?
And you know how the media is. They'll find them. They'll blur out their faces or distort their voices, but they'll put them on TV. We've seen that.
So, where are all of the victims?
Now, on the other side, you've got the whole drug thing, at least allegations of tainted drugs.
So, they're saying that. Multiple people have died. Multiple people have been hospitalized. And that it's a great big cover-up.
Okay, just think about this for a moment. If your child, if your 17, 18, 19-year-old child drops dead at Ole Miss, don't you think you're going to be going to the media about that? Don't you think you're probably going to, I don't know, post a funeral notice about that? Or if your child is in the hospital, you're going to be putting something out on social media announcing that your child's in the hospital. I mean, I see that all the time.
I haven't seen any of those.
So are you now suggesting that the parents of the young people who were allegedly killed at Ole Miss are they in on the cover-up too? Is it a great big conspiracy? And again, with Fox News, they know better. But they're they're after ratings here and they want to create some sort of, I don't know, horror movie where old you know, sk where kids are dropping dead, they're getting sexually assaulted in the bars, and they're taking drugs that have been laced with something. And none of it is true.
That's where we are right now. And so, wanted to set the record straight because we've been getting a lot of calls here, and we're not going to speculate. On something like that, we're just not going to do it. 901-260-5926. That's 901-260-5926.
Want to welcome a brand new sponsor to the show, Kevin Snyder, who is one of the great attorneys here in the Mid-South. And Kevin and his team, they're going to be coming on the show. Whenever we have like a big story that involves the legal system, Kevin's going to weigh in. Also, he's a big consumer guy, so he's looking after you, making sure that you guys aren't being taken for a ride. And you're really going to appreciate Kevin.
He is a great American patriot. For example, the guy that, what is that, the homeowner who caught some 14-year-old trying to steal his car in the driveway and shot the kid? Is that, you know, the guy was arrested?
So is that a crime? Are you allowed under the Castle Doctrine to defend your home and your property here in Tennessee? We're going to be able to ask Kevin those kinds of questions.
So we're really excited about adding Kevin to the team, and we certainly appreciate their great support and all of our incredible sponsors here on the Mighty 990. Have you heard about President Trump? Any of you go into the game on Thursday? I'm sorry, on Saturday. Yesterday, Thursday, the president announced that he is coming to Tennessee.
Tennessee, and he's going to be attending the UT Knoxville. Is it Texas? UT and UT there at Nealon Stadium. President will be hanging out with Peyton Manning.
So President's looking forward to it. You know, he loves a great football game. By the way, if you are going to the game, you need to check in with the university because there are going to be a lot of security measures in place. And sort of like, I don't know, when the Memphis Tigers were playing at their home opener, when people had to stand in line for a long time, you better get ready because I think you're going to be standing in line for a long time there at Nealon Stadium. But it's always great to have the President of the United States in the volunteer state.
And no doubt we'll be doing a rehash of that on Monday. 901-260-5926 is our telephone number. That's 901-260-5926. Well, some interesting news. Yeah.
about Space Exxon.
So Justin Pearson, powerfro guy, Has been out there, and he's been saying that Memphians are dropping dead from asthma and lung cancer, and people are suffering, and the water system is being tainted, and Elon Musk is responsible, so we've got to shut it all down. We've got to shut it all down. Here is first, I want to go back, and here is Mayor Paul Young talking about this and why we need Elon Musk here. Take a listen. Like our while are all of these other civil and human rights are at risk, to be doing a business deal with a fraud, I think is probably the biggest or I shouldn't say, I don't want to speak for folks in Memphis, but it's probably one of the largest concerns.
Then when you're also talking about water, you think about Flint, you think about Jackson. You don't want to put your city in the same position there when there's already such economic depression.
So so to first of all I don't have to be coached on not trustin' dude. Oh, I ain't no fool. Like, I'm not stupid. I understand. This is a trillionaire.
It's not about trusting him. I'm for Memphis. I'm not for dude. I'm for Memphis. Remember Our community has been shrinking.
Everything that our community is operates the data center. They do. Who is they? XA Space XAI. Who owns SpaceX AI?
Elon Musk.
Okay. Yeah. All right.
I'm just saying. I'm just saying. It has nothing to do with me trusting him. He paid for a piece of property in our city. A transaction that me as mayor, I don't stop a transaction between two private parties.
So I come in after the transaction and try to negotiate things that we can get. like a two hundred million dollar gray water facility. like investments in the community around us with schools. Who knows what's going the biggest thing happening in the global economy right now is data centers. This is the biggest thing happening in the global economy.
So it's up to us to figure out are we going to just say put a fence around our communities we don't want to play a part in the global economy or the future? Or are we going to say, let's figure this thing out? We had to figure it out in real time. That's what we're doing.
So the people that are pushing back Are pushing back as if I'm not with them.
Okay, let me jump in. Came out yesterday with the county's top air. polluters. The top companies in Memphis that are responsible for pollution. No, the hot dog joint was not on.
No, I know I did too. I thought Chili Dog Day was, you know, it's an air pollution day, but it's not. The top five, you've got to say, Todd, it's SpaceXI, right? Or SpaceXAI, right? That's it.
No, it's not. As a matter of fact, not even number two. Not even number three, four, or five. As a matter of fact, SpaceXi is ranked 28th. On their list of top air polluters in Shelby County.
So I have a question. For all of you folks that are anti-data centers and anti-Elon and anti-Space XA uh spe space XAI. They've got to come up with a better name. Are you saying now? Because the whole point was we've got to shut down Elon because he's polluting the air.
So if Elon is number 28, Not to be hypocritical, but don't you also have to get out there and call for every other business like one through twenty seven to shut down as well? Why are you going after number twenty eight, but you're not going after number one, New Corps Steel, or number two, Valero or number three, Mitsubishi Chemical of America?
Sounds a little hypocritical to me. All right, hang tight, everybody. Gotta take a quick break. This is the Mighty 990K Wing. And welcome back, everybody.
It is a great day to wake up in the Mid-South. Laura Huckabee is going to be along in just a few moments with an update on your weekend forecast. Absolutely beautiful. I'll be flying out to Los Angeles tomorrow.
So, if you're over at Memphis International, be sure to drop by and say hello. Going to be speaking at a number of events, and C-SPAN is filming our book special for their book channel.
So, hopefully, we'll have two people watching the C-SPAN book channel. Again, our telephone number: 901-260-5926. That's 901-260-5926. I've got to bring in our guests, and I'm going to introduce our guests, and then I'm going to tell you what's happening here later on today, because this is a huge thing, and I know our ladies are going to want to be a part of this. Our good friend Carrie Schwein and our good friend Shelly Chang from Shelby County Republican Women's Club.
And ladies, y'all are decked out like you went back in a time machine to 1970. I feel like we need a disco ball in here. I would have brought it if I had one.
So I'm saying this: you guys are in a party mood. You ladies are in a party mood. And today, down at the Halloran Center, they are showing, like all day, they're showing Dolly Partons 9 to 5. And it's free of charge. You can go down there, have a good time, and, you know, wear a dolly wig or other, you know, accessories and have a good time.
That's a good party. I like it. We're there. I mean, it's always a fun. Shelly, you live down at the Orpheum.
I love the Orpheum. Good stuff.
Well, anyway, ladies, good to have you with us. First of all, what's going on here with the outfits? Yes, so we are having an awesome fundraiser October 1st. It is a 60s, 70s, and 80s music, trivia, and bingo event. And so I am here feeling my 70s vibe, and we have Shelly here feeling the disco vibe.
So we are bringing it back retro style October 1st. Yeah, Carrie, you're kind of like the vibe is like sunny and share a little bit. A little country, a little rock and roll. Shelly, tell us about the fundraiser. You guys are, what, doing trivia and bingo?
Trivia and bingo. We have a DJ event, so it's going to be a lot of fun. We're going to have some prizes for the winners as well. And Janine, our chairperson for this, she's really been working hard on it. And it's going to be a cash bar, some heavy hors d'oeuvres, and it is not just for women, men and women.
Open to the entire community. Anybody is welcome. And most importantly, all proceeds go to support local Republican candidates. I'm wondering how that effort has been. You know, there's across the country, there is a raging debate going on right now.
People are really concerned about the Republican chances in the midterms. What about here in Tennessee? What are you guys, what's the vibe out there on the campaign trail, ladies? I think we're just trying to really get busy. We took a break.
I think it it wore us out. And it's a tiring event doing all of this, but we are backing all of our Republicans because we need them. And we need our Republican voters to get out and just not to be lazy. That's it. Carrie.
Yeah, I mean, I think August was very disappointing. And just, I feel the same, you know, lack of energy heading into November. And so we just really have to wake everybody up because this is a very, very important election. I mean, here's the thing. We don't need Justin Pearson representing any part of Tennessee in Congress.
And the reality is, if we do not get out and vote, that's exactly what's going to happen. Exactly. And it's going to change it would change. I mean, if you think it's bad now, it's only going to get worse. No, no doubt about it.
No doubt about it. All right.
So I've been to some of these events.
So you've got the you should have led with the bar.
So there'll be adult libations there. Absolutely. And there's great music from the 70s.
So, what genre are you? I'm a Gen Xer.
So we have great music, you know, but I kind of bridge like the late 70s into the 80s.
So I got a little tail end of the disco era.
So, Carrie, what about you?
Well, I'm a native Mimpian, and I grew up listening to Oldies 98.1. And so I love old music, primarily the 60s. The 60s. All right.
Shelly, what about you? I'm going to show my ignorance here. Anybody at my table, if you're on my team, if we were doing team events, you wouldn't want me on your team. I'm there for the party. That's what I'm there for.
Yes. Yeah, I just love music. I love all different types of music. But if you asked me what year it came in, I could not tell you.
Well, no, but so what era? I'm not asking how old you are, but what era did you grow? Are you a Gen Xer? I am a Gen Xer. I'm on the line.
But yeah, I haven't really decided how I'm going to dress up for the party, though, because I also have like Back to the Future vibes, too. That's well, that, hey, look, there's nothing wrong with that. And I didn't realize you were on the spectrum there with Gen X.
So you're like right there. Right there. Wow. That makes a lot of sense now. Yeah.
Now, now, are you Carrie? Are you more millennial-esque? Are you a Gen Xer? Gen Xer. Is that right?
Okay. You see, we're hard. Our generation is just hardier than I think. We're tough. We're tough.
You know what it was? It was those playgrounds with all the rust and the tetanus, yes. The hot slide? The spinning tetanus and the 500-degree slide. That was living, kids.
Yes, it was. We didn't have any of those safety helmets, seat belts. Do you remember the airplanes when they had the non-smoking section of the airplane? Everybody got lung cancer and you enjoyed it. I forgot about that.
I'm just saying. Or the station wagon, right? Everybody piled into the back of the station wagon or pick up trucks. Yeah. Oh, that's it.
Back in the day, back in the day. All right, we have Carrie Schweed and Shelly Chang with us today. This is a lot of fun.
Now, you guys are also bringing State Senator Brent Taylor back to Shelby County. He's been out on the campaign trail and meeting a lot of the new folks in the newly redrawn district 9. Tell us about that big event coming up. We're super excited to have him. He booked this out.
He knew he was going to be winning and he knew he was ready to run. And so he booked this out, I would say, almost a year ago because he wanted specifically to be able to reach out to the local community. We're very excited to have him and blessed to have him. And we are backing him 100%. And um yeah, second Tuesday of the month.
So, definitely, everybody can. Where can people go? If they want to get information about the club, how to join, the events you guys are having. Right, so we have an awesome website. It's scrwc.org.
And so that has all the information you can register and just really keep up to date with what's going on locally. I love it. And again, you're going to have a great, great time at the trivia bingo night. It is just so much fun. Prizes.
Yes, prizes. And also, the really cool thing is, I have some people that are like, I can't go on Thursday. We're busy. That's okay. We just want your money, honestly, because we want to give it to the local Republicans.
You can actually register to come and not show up, or you can also sponsor. We've got different sponsorships available to you. It's going to be a lot of fun. What are you ladies hearing out there on campaign issues? I was actually talking to some of the high school kids at Collierville High School yesterday about that.
Affordability is a big thing on their minds. What are you hearing in your circle of friends? I know Vicki Gandy is running right now and she's super excited and I know that's a a contested piece right now. Yeah, so that's the Germantown school board position number four. Right.
And so Vicki Gandy is the only bona fide Republican running for that position. That's true. And I have actually endorsed Vicki Gandy. I live in Germantown, and it's important that we put Republicans on school boards. There's been a lot of chaos in our school system, even locally.
And we need to make sure that we have somebody there that's going to stand up for moms and dads and for the kids. Yes. Yes. But as far as issues, is there one specific issue are you guys hearing out there what's on the minds of voters? That I've not been paying attention to as much because now my kids are not in the local schools, but I know across the nation.
I don't know, yeah, across the nation. I'm talking about big picture midterms. I mean, I truly believe that what the teachers, how they teach, what they're allowed to endorse within the classrooms, what they're putting in the libraries and allowing kids to have access to. Those are some big, hot topics. And if we don't watch it locally, that's where it grows bigger.
Yeah. All right.
I know that a lot of folks have been concerned about affordability, beef prices, gas prices, diesel.
So a lot of stuff out there that are on the minds of voters across the nation. And I suspect here in the Mid-South. All right.
October the 1st, Trivia Night Bingo. Are people dressing up? Do they need to get the bell bottoms and all of that stuff? Yes, we encourage everyone to dress up, 60s, 70s, or 80s. It's a contest even for the dress up.
We have prizes for best costumes. But you don't have to. My husband's coming. He's not going to dress up.
Well. My husband is coming because he would be dressing up. Do the guys have parachute pants? You know, that was a big thing back in the 80s. Oh my lord, I don't want to get in trouble here.
Uh, I remember when I was a kid, though, um, I was a cool kid because I had the izod shirts, right? You know, those were like all the rage. You had the members-only jacket? I had a members-only jacket, but um, the izods, we had like a dozen izod shirts, and and people thought, wow, stearns must come from a wealthy family.
So, uh, my grandparents lived in Whitehaven. My grandmother was a seamstress, so she loved to sew. And I was down in her sewing room one day, and I looked, and there was a big jar, and in that jar, it must have been a hundred little alligators. And she was going to she was going to the treasury and buying these cheap polo shirts and sewing on the izod alligator. That's a great grandma.
What a great grandma. And nobody knew. No.
So there you go. I mean, look, if I'm here, I'm going to go to this thing. This sounds like a lot of fun. It's going to be a lot. I will not be wearing parachute pants.
We appreciate that. All right.
Shelly, Carrie, Grace. Great to see both of you ladies again. October 1st, the big fundraiser. We'll post links to it on kwamradio.com. All right, our time, 45 minutes after the hour coming up, a big story brewing in East Tennessee.
David Hatley, the independent, running for governor, the victim now of a death threat that was posted or actually written on the sign of one of his buildings. We have photos of that, kwamradio.com. Police in Johnson City are investigating this, and they are taking it very seriously. Got to take a break. Let's check in with Commander Chuck.
All right, it is the danger zone. Those ladies, Carrie Schwein, Shelly Chang, great American patriots, and yes, Vicki Gandy running for school board. She is the Republican nominee. She was the, she made it through the primary. She is the Republican nominee for school board in Germantown.
And again, you know, when we talk about, you know, Republican and Democrat, I think there's an independent running. And again, I'm sure these are all very nice people. I just happen to know Vicki, and I've known her for a very long time. And I am also a Republican. And, you know, my basic rule of thumb is: if you are a Republican, you should vote for Republican candidates that are on the ballot.
That's what it means to be a Republican. If you want to be an Independent, fine, be an independent. But if you're a, let's say you're a Republican club out there. And you're supporting an independent and not your own party's nominee, that's a big problem in my estimation, and that must be addressed because one of the big problems, you've got folks out there. They say they share conservative values, but when they get elected, things get a little squirrely.
So, all that to say, it's a weird situation right now in Republican politics. I'll just leave it like that. By the way, voter registration: Tennesseans who still need to register for the November 3rd general election, you've got until Monday, October the 5th to register to vote.
So, be sure to do that. Voting, early voting, begins October 14th and continues all the way until October 29th.
So, we've got a lot of folks on the ballot, and you're going to want to make sure you get out there and do early voting. Also, Congressman Steve Cohen, by the way. There is huge drama on the Democrat side of the aisle. Steve Cohen, Paul Young, Lee Harris, none of those guys have endorsed Justin Pearson. For Congress.
Very interesting situation brewing there in the Democrats. A lot of folks do not in the Democrat Party here locally, which. Again, from a cultural perspective, they are a bit more conservative. And so, anyway, yet they're not supporting him at all. Congressman Steve Cohen introducing articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Unbelievable. He'll be he'll be down at the old folks' home soon.
So hang tight, everybody. All right, a big event coming up this weekend, and we want to tell you about it. It involves our friends with Ducks Unlimited. Here's a little bit of that great conversation. This is an exciting thing, the 2026 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest.
Tell us all about it.
Well, first of all, I'd like to get back to the fact of that you have done something in Memphis that I haven't done yet. I would love to be the duck master someday.
So I'm pretty jealous of that accomplishment. You've just surpassed all of my accomplishments with that one thing.
So Karen. That's very cool. All right.
We're going to have to make this happen, Karen. I know people. I know people at the Peabody. That's great. Yeah, so the Federal Duck Stamp, so the real name of it is the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp.
And it was started in 1934. And the reason it was started was because we were at the height of the Dust Bowl at that time and waterfowl populations were plummeting.
So for those that aren't familiar with waterfowl, the prairie pothole region, so up in the Dakotas and up in Canada as well, in the prairie potholes, there are these really important small wetlands for waterfowl nesting and breeding and then also rearing the new hatch of the next year. And so it's a pivotal location from a conservation and habitat perspective, but we were losing waterfowl in just huge numbers because of the Dust Bowl and all of these wetlands drying up at this time. And so that's when the Federal Duck Stamp Act was passed in 1934. And the idea being that waterfowl hunters would need to purchase these stamps.
So anybody over When they are in the field hunting, And the dollars from the duck stamp. goes into federal program that protects and restores waterfowl habitat, For future generations of waterfowl. It's my understanding that the Duck Stamp has really been described as one of the most successful conservation programs in American history. Is that true? Absolutely.
It's one of the most successful and one of the earliest.
So it was one of the certainly one of the earliest recognized user pay system models for conservation being in 1934, but also one of the most successful. And I'd say some of the reasons for that is it has an efficiency that is unmatched by any other program that I've ever heard of. 98 cents of every dollar goes on the ground for habitat conservation. And so it has to go directly into purchasing wetlands or adding land to national wildlife refuges. And so I think that's part of the reason why it's It's been so successful, but I think also because it's just so widely supported, it brings together art and conservation in such a way that you have waterfowl enthusiasts, art enthusiasts, stamp collectors, bird watchers, and it's just something that brings all of these different dynamics together on the Voice for Conservation.
All right.
