From the principal Toyota Studios, it's morning in Memphis with Todd Starnes. And it is a very nice start to the weekday here in the Principal Toyota Memphis studio. Hello, everybody. Welcome to the show. Great to have you with us.
I'm Todd Starns. We have some great guests coming up. A lot of political news here in the state of Tennessee. We're going to get to Steve Gill, the publisher of TriStar Daily, will be here in just a little while. Also, John Covington, the vice president of the Memphis Police Association, he'll be dropping by a little bit later on.
We have a lot of local news to get to as well, including what happened over the weekend at the Delta Fair and Music Festival over at the Agra Center, making national news, national headlines, all sorts of mayhem.
Now, the good news is that law enforcement was there. They were able to make a couple of arrests. And by the way, we have the full story, including video at kwamradio.com. Again, that's kwamradio.com. And hundreds of you, hundreds of you have weighed in on our social media pages about what happened over the weekend, where these gangs of black teenagers started multiple fights and caused stampedes at the fair.
And many, many families were there trying to have a good time, trying to enjoy the fair. I mean, there were a lot of people, a lot of people there. And all you know what breaks loose.
Now, the Shelby County Sheriff's Department says that they had to temporarily suspend the fair because of the violence that these teenagers were causing.
Now, it just seems to me that we need to, it is well beyond addressing this problem. I was driving, I live, well, a couple of miles away from the Agro Center, and so I was on. Off to Shelby Farms late yesterday evening, pulled in to get some gas and went in to grab a bottle of water. And there are these law enforcement, a couple of law enforcement guys there, about three of them. It looked like they were heading into Afghanistan.
That's how they were outfitted with all of their gear. And the cashier, everybody was sort of taken aback. And the cashier said, What's going down? Where are you guys heading to? And the guy says, The fair.
I mean, just think about that. If that's how law enforcement has to get ready to go to a fair, what does that say about the rest of us? And this is a problem that has not gone away. And this is a problem that will not go away until we can figure out what to do with these parents that are allowing their kids to become animals and really behave worse than animals. Animals don't behave like this.
And this is a big problem in the Mid-South. And nobody wants to talk about it. That's one of the funny things. We got several comments on our K-Wham page yesterday. You're the only news outlet in the entire city that's actually talking about this.
Well, there's a reason why, because there is a racial component to this, and the media will not. Touch those kinds of stories unless Unless it impacts their liberal base, which is why the media has been all over the shutdown of Riverside Drive. They spent $60 million to renovate, and most of that was your tax money. They spent $60 million, City Hall did, to renovate Tom Lee Park. They spent another $2 million to reconstruct Riverside Drive, which is almost impassable now, but they've shut it down over the weekends.
And the reason why is they say they can't control the violence that's being caused by young people on Riverside Drive and in Tom Lee Park on the weekends.
So they want to make it as difficult as possible for anybody to get down to the park.
Now, here's the problem. All of the neighborhoods in the downtown area are enraged because now that, that road is closed, it's caused all sorts of gridlock. And I'm going to explain why this ties into what's happening at the Agro Center.
So bear with me for a second.
So the Downtown Association, and we have that story up at kwamradio.com as well. Downtown Association is the neighborhood association very upset, and they're demanding that Riverside Drive be reopened. That's let me. This is why it's hilarious. We went back and looked at the voting demographics of downtown Memphis.
Overwhelmingly Democrat.
So these folks, I feel their pain. But you know what, downtown folks, you get what you voted for. And I hate it for you. I mean, many of you live in those multi-million-dollar homes on the bluffs, and I get it. You don't want to have to sit out on your front porch watching the riverboats go by as the gangbangers are fighting in Tom Lee Park on the basketball court.
I get that. I feel for you. But you know what? You deserve it because that's what you voted for.
So until you decide, Liberal Democrats in downtown Memphis to actually change your voting habits, that's going to continue. And by the way, that's the same thing that's happening right now at the Delta Fair. And I know the organizers of the Delta Fair, some of the greatest salt of the earth people you will ever meet. Fine, fine people. And they put on a wonderful fair.
At least they're trying to. But then these thugs, these gangs of thugs come in. And so I want to outline the problem here, but we also need to talk about solutions. And that's where you come in. And I'm just curious: how do we fix this problem, ladies and gentlemen?
Because look, we've allowed these gangs of predominantly black teens to destroy our shopping malls. You try going down to Wolf Chase Galleria. Drive down old, remember, remember the Hickory Ridge Mall. Go back, drive by there. Just, you know, take some, get some, you know, Kevlar.
Make sure you got bulletproof windows. and um hide the kids. Drive down Winchester and take a look at what used to be. Go down to Whitehaven right now and take a look take a look around. It doesn't have to be like this, but it is.
Go drive by where the Mall of Memphis. Used to be. What do they call it? The ball of murder? Back in the day.
Oh, what about Oak Court? Anybody? I'm just telling you, drive by these places. I'd encourage you to drive by Tom Lee Park, but you can't because Riverside Drive is closed. I'm I'm just saying it's so at some point We and by the way, downtown, downtown is on the verge.
And this really bothers me. Look, I lived 15 years in downtown Brooklyn, New York. I love a vibrant downtown where you can get out, walk around, not have to worry about anything. You can't do that in downtown Memphis, even with the National Guard there.
So we've got to do something about this, or we're just going to lose the city. I mean, it really is that simple. We are at that point now.
So, a lot of angry parents posting messages on social media on our K-Wham page. Seems to me, first of all, Every Every outlet, every restaurant, store, every park, any zoos. You need to have a policy in place. If you are under the age of 18, you've got to be accompanied by a parent. That's number one.
Number two, police need to lay down the law. I appreciate the fact that four people got arrested. But four people? We've seen the videos. Why weren't all of those kids arrested?
And then, by the way, why aren't their parents being thrown in jail? But again, we've got maybe a generation, two generations of kids here in the Mid-South that have been raised to behave worse than animals. And that is a home problem. And I'm just telling you, City Hall seems to think the answer here is to build more community centers and build more basketball courts, and that, my friend, is not the answer. How do we know?
Just look at what happened over the weekend. And by the way, we've got a big, beautiful, huge basketball court right there down on Riverside Drive. And what happened? They had to shut it down. The Roadway.
Because of all of the out-of-control violence.

I feel for this fella. He's a big U of M fan, and he posted something on social media. You know, we had a lot of Memphis Tigers go out to Boise, Idaho, for the big game. And good luck. Look, it was a tough weekend for Memphis Tigers fans, but don't worry.
It's a long season, and Coach Huff is doing a great job. And we're going to have some ups and downs. All right.
So, setting that aside.
So this guy writes in: Boise downtown is amazing. Loads of people, retail and restaurants, zero homeless skunk weed or urine. Planters all along the streets full of healthy plants. No cruising blast music at a thousand decibels. It's attractive, usable, and safe.
And so, by the way, many other people from the Mid-South posted the same thing about Boise, and they said they couldn't believe how nice this city was. Look, I was a couple of weeks ago, I was in Nashville, went to Greenhill's Mall, had brunch with some friends, and it was remarkable. People were walking around leisurely. They weren't looking around like they were in some sort of a war zone. They were having a good time.
There were no gangs, marauding gangs of people. It was just. It was a nice, pleasant Saturday. And I'm thinking. Why ca why can't we have this back in Back in Memphis.
Why can't we do that?
So, this guy gets brutally attacked by the Memphis media mob. And these liberal sports journalists we have here attacking him as if he's some sort of a racist. But the guy is speaking the truth here. And that's the problem. The media is really complicit in all of this.
We are not owned by the corporate bigwigs.
So we get to say the unvarnished truth on this radio station. And we will always do that. But I appreciate what this guy had to say because it's a good point. We don't have to live like this, ladies and gentlemen. This is not normal.

TriStarDaily.com. A great, great website. Steve, I think the big headline coming out of this weekend is that Marsha Blackburn has declared all-out war on independent candidate David Hadley. I've never seen anything like this. Yeah, and what's really interesting is that they're not in the least bit coy about it.
I mean, they've put up a website, an attack website on Independent David Hatley that the campaign has put up. They haven't used a five hundred one C three or C four, a nonprofit to give them an arm's length distance. That that The dead beat David. website is Paid for by Marshall for governor, Glenn Jacobs treasurer.
So, I mean, again, this puts some taint on Glenn Jacobs, who wants to be a US senator if Marshall wins. They've also started dispatching some protesters at events where David is expected to appear with guys wearing black IRS t-shirts saying, hey, we're from the IRS, we're here to collect our money. And a guy in like a prison outfit, they had their protesters dispatched. On 9-11. At an event honoring emergency responders.
I mean, that is so far below the belt, it is disgusting. But it tells me. That Marshall Blackburn and her team are desperately afraid of David Hatley because they claim that they have an inevitable. ability to win, that they are so far ahead, nobody can beat them. Then why are they doing low ball gutter politics like this?
If they're so far ahead, they can't lose.
Well, you know, it's interesting. I have a theory about that, but I want to circle back. You're telling me that because I've seen, I saw the pictures and the videos, and you're right. They're sending out people dressed in black and white prison garb to protest the Hatley events, and they're also distributing statewide wanted posters with David Hatley's face on it. As far as I know, there are no warrants out for his arrest, but you're telling me this happened at a 9-11 event to honor first responders?
Do we have Steve with us? Yes, did you hear me? All right, yeah, I can hear you now, Steve. Here's what's also interesting: they're pointing out that this, when he was bouncing checks, when he was in his early 20s, when he had a new business. Yeah, he was moving.
Funds from one bank to the other, staying just ahead of when the payment would become due. Before electronic transfers, you could get away with that for a while. He got caught, got convicted. went to federal prison for a month. And paid $35,000 in restitution.
That was the amount of the charges.
Meanwhile, let's remember: you have Marsha Blackburn, who, according to the Tennessee Lookout and other publications, their own records, transferred $4 million from her Senate campaign funds to her state. Government governors raised funds, which is almost identical to what Brian Kelsey did that sent him to jail.
So they're carpet about this $35,000 thirty year ago incident While a year ago, they were doing the stuff that sent Brian Kelsey to jail, pending a pardon from President Trump involving. four million seems to me like a little throwing rocks in a glass house.
So here's my theory on this. We were checking the latest fundraising numbers, and again, these are fluid, but Hatley the Independent is basically self-funding his campaign with more than $5 million, nearly $6 million. Marsha Blackburn, cash on hand, has $2.6 million. And I think that could be the rub here.
Well, and and again, keep in mind that that Marcia is is taking PAC money. She's got third party interest groups, pro voucher groups. Pro-AI groups, pro-flock camera groups putting millions into her race that they did during the primary. Attlee is taking no PAC money, no lobbyist money, no individual contributions. He has said he will put as much as 15 to 20 million of his own money into the race.
He owns a huge company that he's developed over the years, despite that stumble at the start when he was a young entrepreneur, worth over $200 million selling golf carts and doing hot tubs.
So, yeah, he's got the financial resources. And it's interesting that Marsha and Ward Baker, her consultants, put out a poll through the Beacon Center early that was taken in early August to show her with a lead.
Now, she was only at 46% in this poll. She had about a 15-point lead over Jerry Green, the Democrat, who was in the low 20s. But David Hatley hadn't even started at that time.
So if Marsha was at only 46% at the start with this. Poll that was a pushball early. Where is she going to be once Hatley's numbers start catching up?
So, yeah, they're desperate to stop his momentum. And they're going to, you know, use the gutter lowball politics that I think people don't like, which exposes more about them than I think at this point, David Hatley. Steve, I've got about 40 seconds here. Ninth congressional district, Pearson and his team putting out stuff around the clock. We're not hearing much on the Republican side.
Why is that? And how are things looking in that ninth congressional race? Yeah, and I think again, they put out a poll from Pearson showing that he was within four or six points of of uh Of Brent Taylor, but it was a Democrat poll and it didn't have any of the crosstabs.
So we don't know the details of it. But this is to try and tell the national Democrats: hey, put money in this race. We can do this. Brent Taylor's working hard on the east side of the district here in the rural counties in the south part of Tennessee over to Williamson County and the Davidson County area because that's where the bulk of the votes are. That's where the bulk of the Republican votes are.

Wow. The 9-11 attacks. 25 years ago on Friday, we had all sorts of memories and coverage on Friday's program. Here in the Memphis area, the main location for the memorial was the Fire Museum in downtown, and just an incredible ceremony there. Leave it to the district attorney, Steve Mulroy.
To really blow this thing out of the water. Unbelievable. Steve Mulroy posting a message in his official capacity as the district attorney, and he said that one of the most important lessons that we learned. Was that Muslim immigrants were demonized?
So Mulroy believes that the big story, the big takeaway from what happened on 9-11 was the fact that Muslims were demonized. I want to bring into the conversation our good friend from the Memphis Police Association, John Covington. John, good morning, and I know you have a thing or two to say about that. What do you make of this attack on a vault day, September 11th? Todd, well, thanks for having me.
But I lost it when I saw this is so unbelievable. You choose that day of all days. You've got 364 days of the year if you want to attack America or, you know, or. Or denigrate this amazing country. And I posted to somebody, I sent back, it's like, hey, look.
You know, we're respectful on Stalin's birthday. We don't ruin D.A. Mulroy's day by posting anything negative about Stalin. I mean, give me a break. But it was so just, it was tone-deaf.
It was stupid and it was insulting. And I just lost it when I saw it. You know, this guy, I mean, he's a radical leftist. You know, he tries to portray himself as this happy-go-lucky, you know, Star Wars fan, you know, beam-me-up Scotty. But this guy is just as bad as Justin Pearson and all the rest of them.
Well, I think you're right. You know, he comes at you, kind of like you say, this kind of dweebish, you know. But he's just this hardcore leftist. And to use your office, you know, your official office to post something like this. Hey, you know, and Todd, I've studied American history, I've taught it.
And uh And this is something I thought about. You know, on the anniversary of the day Auschwitz was liberated, I get it. The Germans had a tough time with the Russian army after the war, but on that day, I don't want to hear about it. Speaking of that, did you see the story? We've got it over at ToddSterns.com.
A Democrat for the State House, running for the State House, actually had a photograph taken in front of the ovens at Dachau, the concentration camp, and said that's what we need to do to MAGA supporters. And she's doubling down on it. She has no problem saying that we need to send all of the MAGA supporters to death camps, which is interesting because a few years ago when Bernie Sanders was running, one of his campaign staffers said that if they got elected, they would send all of the Trump supporters to re-education camps. I think we got to start taking these people pretty darn seriously.
Well, this is coming from a party that's no surprise who's embraced a guy named Hassan Piker. who said uh that America deserved 9-11. You know, and so I, that is, it is, it's become so radical at some point, and I've been trying to raise the alarm and Todd you every day. It's time to start listening to these people and take it seriously because the things they're talking about in their positions are incredibly anti-American and incredibly radical. John Covington joining us here in studio today.
And by the way, our telephone number, 901-260-5926. That's 901-260-5926. John, over the weekend, and it wasn't just here in Shelby County, Dyer County as well. They had a very serious situation with guns involved at their fair. Here in Shelby County, Mayhem, they had to suspend the Delta fair.
You've got all of this chaos going on out there. And it's every single time, John, it's the same demographic, mostly black teenagers causing mayhem. How do we fix this problem?
Well, you know, it's a tough one because well, it's not tough. What am I saying? It's not tough. We have got to be law and order. We've got to be strong.
We've got to take No quarter given. We got to be fierce out there. And I'm not talking about going beyond the bank. I'm talking about being a presence and having that accountability, transparency. There's no.
Uh No sympathy given, oh, these are kids, these are juveniles. No, these are young people who are out of control and. If something's not done, if they're not shown Some real consequences, they will be the criminals of tomorrow. And so we have got to, and we've made great strides in Memphis and Shelby County on crime, but this issue. Of this cohort of young people that are out of control, we have got to get focused on it.
Meanwhile, you've got the Southern Heritage Classic over the weekend. They had the big parade. It was a family-friendly event. The mayor was out there. No problems at all.
But whenever the lights go down, all you know-what breaks loose. And again, I feel part of me feels for the people who live in downtown, but these people overwhelmingly vote Democrat. And why should we be surprised? Why should they be surprised when City Hall says, you know what, we can't fight the criminals, so we're just going to shut down Riverside Drive? Yeah, that's tough.
Anytime the citizens, the hardworking, taxpaying citizens pay the price. For the actions of a group that don't want to follow the rules, who shirk society. That breaks my heart, and it's really unacceptable. You know, again. You know, speaking of this uh kind of Democratic party, uh Are they going to be holding Shelby County meetings down at 201 at some point as many people are as being indicted down there?
And I always tell people, you see how things are going. Uh, and some of my Democratic friends and moderates is like, why don't you give the Republicans a chance? Because let me tell you. Uh it could be a lot better. Yeah, I'm with you on that.
Again, it seems as though, and you're talking about Will Richardson, who is a brand new just got elected county commissioner, who got arrested on the first, on his first day at the first meeting, got arrested. He's facing charges on tax fraud. You've got Erica Sugarman, and she's facing charges for what? She stole somebody's campaign sign. Yeah, she was tearing down signs in a race she wasn't going to lose.
That makes no sense to me. It's insane. And these are all Democrats. Yeah, what's the common denominator? Democrats.
We're seeing, and again, Proven innocent until proven guilty, of course, but that Tammy Sawyer has been indicted. What once again, time and time again. Uh It's it's the Democrats, and if they're not being indicted, You know, we had our uh our whole issue with Wanda Halbert. that it the incompetence of that situation that You know, God knows it's going to take us years to kind of climb out of that.
So I'm just shocked that so many times, reflexively, people go in and see that D and they vote for it. It makes no sense to me. None whatsoever. At the same time, though. I think this is where the Republican Party apparatus can come in handy: they've got to be holding press conferences and getting in front of the microphones and, you know, again, bringing light to all of this stuff.
And right now, we just don't have that sort of apparatus in place. Is that an important thing to get out there and say, hey, look, folks. This, you know, there's an alternative here. Absolutely. And here locally.
I you know There does not need to be necessarily a focus on all the national issues, but Republicans and Democrats here locally. We got our own problems. Exactly. And understand: do you want. Honesty, competence, trust, accountability, transparency, because you're not getting that now.
And I believe that message needs to be carried forward. To the Democrats who feel like they have no home because the Democratic Party has become so radical. That you know, hey, you don't have to tell anybody, you don't have to put a sign in your yard, but when you get in that voting booth, Punch that R for change and for something better because we deserve it. No, absolutely. And again, we have John Covington with us.

The county commission holding its first voting meeting this afternoon: $6.1 million in funding for Wanda Halbert's old office for what they're calling the stabilization, modernization, and operational improvement of the county clerk's office. What do you think about an idea of a local, a locally focused Doge-style committee to find out what they're doing with all of our tax money?
I think it's a fantastic idea because if the county commission's meeting, your tax dollars are being spent, and I can pretty much guarantee they're not being spent efficiently.
Now, there's not enough Republicans. We get back they're holding the line as best they can, but they just don't have the numbers on that county commission. And you're absolutely right. I've been around government for a long time. as an observer, as an advocate, fighting with, fighting against.
And one thing I can tell you is government's not efficient. And no matter how much money they have, they will find a way to spend it all, and they need to be held accountable. You see, this is my concern because I hear that same argument in the U.S. Senate where we actually do have a majority. Right.
And they're saying, oh, well, we don't have enough Republicans. You know, well, I get it here locally, but I think that you should be screaming from the mountaintops about the corruption. I mean, you have to.
Well, you know, people get involved in their lives and they lose, you know, focus and then elections come around. But I'm a believer, they need to hear it and see it every day. And because it's just it's that important. And so many people I talk to have opinions, again, I'd say, on national politics, but then you ask them about locally, they just seem lost, and that's the wrong way to view it because where the rubber hits the road, You know, if you don't want things like corruption, you don't want county commissioners going to jail, you don't want kids running wild at the fair. There's a way to improve that.
You know, the party that's supported the Memphis Safe Task Force is here. And for all the radical talk that we heard about what a disaster was going to be, guess what? We've seen amazing drops in crime. There's still a lot to do. But just go back and look at what they said it was going to be and what the reality is.
What I think is funny is people are now saying the same people screaming about the National Guard being here, they're like, where are the National Guard at? How come they're not at the National, you know, the state fair?
Well, they were at the fair. You know, they are there. But I think it's sort of ironic that now these same folks are out there saying, we need the National Guard here. Oh, well, in law enforcement, people would stick up their middle finger at me one day, and then I'll show, where were you? When I caught it, I was like, I got here in three minutes.
I don't know. And they're mad at me either way.
So, you know. Wow. Let me ask you. You were at the Germantown Festival over the weekend. I was.
Which, again, a free festival. No problems. And thousands of people showing up. What's the difference there? Is it because of law enforcement?
Is it the mindset that they're enforcing the law in Germantown? It's a culture. And it's the culture set by the leaders of that community and the citizens, more importantly, demanded by the citizens of that community. And so you have a feeling things are not going to be. Just like we all, what do we know about Bartlett?
You don't speed in Bartlett because Bartlett has set that as the culture. Yeah. Germantown, Carville, and Arlington and other cities have said we are not going to stand for this stuff. And guess what? It doesn't happen.
Well, it's a fair point. That's a great way to look at it. I'm curious about the The booth, you guys had the Republican Party had a booth there. Tell me, what were people coming by? What were they talking about?
Well, you know, they were coming by a lot, and they were even Republicans who were just asking questions about who was running, you know, what was going on here locally. But we got a lot of thumbs up and a lot of support. And so I got a lot of questions about the Brent Taylor race. And we were reminding them, keep your eye on the prize. Keep working hard because races like that, we can't take anything for granted.
And we got a lot of questions about Marsha, a lot of support.
So it was very positive.
So I I was pleased to be out there, uh even though it was uh uh a slightly warm. Yes. Yes. And Laura, I'll pass on that complaint to Laura Huckabee. I appreciate that.
Yeah, no problem. But again, I think the messaging here is got to unite. We've got to somehow We've got to light a fire under folks. We got and vote. And you said it right.
We've got to be a constant voice, not just when an election's coming up, but every day, sending out things and confronting and reminding people it can be better. You have a real alternative and real choice. And guess who has been right every step along the way? It's been the Republican Party. And K-Wham.
And K-Wham, 100%. And K-Wham is doing that, by the way, but you're the lone guy out there fighting on the frontier. You need some backup.
Well, we do. And again, I feel bad. This poor guy, he's a big Memphis Nigerian. He's a sports guy. I can guarantee he's probably not all that plugged into politics.
And as pointed out, man, boys, the Idaho is really nice. We can walk around downtown. Nobody's smoking weed. Nobody's getting butt naked and fighting in the middle of the street. They get murdered.
Exactly. And some of the local sports radio hosts are giving this guy hell. And you're like, really, dude? But again, it's a reminder. We don't have to.
This is not normal. You know, this is not the way other people have to live, and we don't have to live like this either.
Well, and not to make light of something serious, but it's almost like it's Shelby County is like the wife. Who has the abusive husband? We do not have to stay in this relationship, it can be better. And move out, move on, find a man or a partner who will treat you right. I got the partner for you, Shelby County.
It's called the Republican Party. And we don't want people hooking up with Fayette County. Nothing wrong with you folks in Fayette County at all, but we want people to stay in Memphis under Shelby County. Look, you know, we're losing people at an historic rate out of Memphis and Shelby County. And we have got to stop that.
And the way you stop that is first you make it safe. You uh Real consequences. That's how you build business. That's how you build tax base. And that's how you move forward.
I think, real quick, the last thing here is, and the message for Republicans is: it's not good. I think there's a mindset we're only going to win four commission seats, and that's it. And maybe the suburban, whatever the races are. No, that's the wrong mindset here. And I think we've got to really seriously take a look at how do we strategically win in Shelby County?
How do we start chipping away? That seems to me to be the big issue facing the party moving forward. We've got to empower and get our base out there. And we have to, as I say, reach out to these Democrats. And I know many of them who feel so lost in their party right now because they don't recognize this 9-11 hating, America-hating party that they no longer feel at home.
