We're going to be talking to a lot of lawmakers throughout the day that are at the convention and will be providing you exclusive coverage right here on your radio station for political news coverage. By the way, 78 degrees right now at Whitehaven High School, it is going to be another scorcher.

Laura Huckabee, our chief meteorologist, will be along in just a little while with an updated look at your forecast and Commander Chuck taking a look at the morning commute today. Real quick, before we go right away to our Patriot mobile newsmaker line, I have to give you guys a huge shout out.

Well done, K-Wham listening audience. Yesterday, we had George Brown on from Kroger. And there was a huge, huge response yesterday to our first responder supply drive. This was right outside the Kroger at Poplar and Highland. And we understand George sent us a note late last night.

It was a huge success. And you guys donated thousands of dollars worth of items, snacks, all sorts of things to our first responders. They're going to be divided up between Memphis Police, Shelby County Sheriff's Department, and the Memphis Fire Department.

So we want to say thank you, first of all, to our great K-WAM audience and also the good people over at Kroger. What a great day yesterday. Had a chance to get out there. And K-WAM, our staff dropped off some supplies as well. And we're just honored to be able to stand up and say thank you for the great work that our first responders are engaged in every single day.

Well, we are in the throes of politics here in the Mid-South. And our next guest wants to. Be the next governor of the state of Tennessee. She is right now a Memphis City Councilman, Jerry Green. Jerry, hope you're doing well today.

And please tell me, you guys have like an emergency kiddie pool that you guys could jump into. It's hot out there on the campaign trail. Man, thank you for having me back, Todd. I love coming on K-Wham, even if it's early. But yeah, it is ridiculously hot.

I'm ready for fall weather already. Football started. It's time for some fall weather. Yes, yes, it is. And by the way, speaking of football, what an amazing launch to the football season for the Memphis Tigers.

And that stadium is really breathtaking. And the University of Memphis, off to a great start. Yes, University of Memphis and of course my college, University of Tennessee, had a pretty good start too.

So it's going to be great from one side of Tennessee to the other this year. It's east to west. That's what it's all about. Jerry, we've got a lot of politics to talk about, and you made some headlines yesterday throwing down the gauntlet and you're challenging Senator Marshall Blackburn to a series of debates across the state of Tennessee. Tell us about the backstory there.

Well, we've been asking Senator Blackburn to debate us for almost a year now, over three hundred days, and we've received no response.

So I thought perhaps if we laid out some dates and places, And sent her a formal letter that she would actually participate in this job interview that we are both in the middle of right now. And we started with her hometown, you know, not far from her house.

So hopefully she can make at least one of them. Why is a debate and debating your opponent on stage, why is that important to the electoral process?

Well, I think that if you can't take the questions, you don't have the answers, and the voters are owed. At the very least, a debate. I think she should also be holding town halls, as I've had over 170 across the state, taking questions directly from the people who she'll be working for. But if you can't stand up. And say what you stand for, then you don't deserve the job, in my opinion.

This is how you tell voters what you believe. what you don't believe, what your plans are. What your policies would be, and the voters deserve to have us stand side by side to hear that. I found it interesting. You actually referenced a column that Senator Blackburn wrote back in 2024.

This was the actual headline: Now more than ever, America needs robust bipartisan. And respectful debate. What do you think changed there? Why do you think the senator doesn't want to get out on the debate stage?

Well, I think we all saw when she was asked questions by the press. Again, I'm here talking to the press. I think that's part of the job interview, too. She sort of fumbled, saying she was talking to Tennesseans every day. That's actually what I'm doing.

I was up in Campbell County yesterday, a plus 90 Trump district, and we had 120 people show up in 100 degree weather to talk to me. Um But I think after that, she tried to do a few press interviews and they didn't go well.

So they just shut it down. And she thinks she can coast through this election. She thinks that she has it on lock. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people, but Yeah. Yeah.

Wants a debate when she wants a debate, but not when the people deserve it. I think it's interesting. And folks, we're talking to Jerry Green running to be the next governor of the state of Tennessee. Jerry, I think it was interesting. All of a sudden, we started getting these inside dirt on David Hatley.

And I had to Google David Hatley very quickly. I'm like, who is David Hatley? And why are the Republicans scared of this guy? He is running as an independent, apparently a very wealthy man. We're not going to get into his laundry.

We're going to have him on K-Wham in a couple of days. But I'm wondering about Hatley. How do you view his campaign? Any concerns there?

Well, you know, we're running a campaign that is about families, not billionaires. We think that we are more in touch with the people, and I think his closing is something like. Balt, not built, not bald, but he's trying to buy an election. I mean, he is out of touch, he's never voted. Like that seems like the basics if you want to actually be a governor of this state to have participated in the political process at the very bottom level.

So I think it's problematic on a lot of ways. But I I truly believe that The work we've been doing for over a year is going to matter more than somebody throwing money in at the last minute. I want to ask you real quick. New numbers came out, Memphis Safe Task Force. And it's pretty remarkable when you look at the numbers.

And the one that really doesn't get the headlines that I think ought to, that at least 186 missing children have been located since the operation began. Does that make it worth it? I mean, and I understand Democrats, you know, they've got a problem with this task force, but the fact that they're finding missing children, does that make it worth it?

So, I actually talked to several people within the police force about that. And what I learned is what they were doing are following up on runway runaways that have never been followed up on and by the time that they called them they had returned home. Or they were going to be with an ant. Um like, yes, it's good that we cleared those files, but It wasn't so much they walked around and found missing children. It was children that were, and if you go back and look at the files, they'll say they're found at school, they're found at their mother's home.

They were already back home. They were just, you know, finishing the paperwork.

So, I think I find problematic, you and I have had this conversation before, is more surround to the National Guard. and how I believe that is unconstitutional on the Tennessee level and the the um US level And what we've seen in the same period of time of them being here is they have made zero arrest. None. And they have actually killed at least one citizen. That I is what I find problematic.

Who was armed with a gun? Who was shot in the back? Who was armed with a gun in a very dangerous position? That could have been a very dangerous situation. We can go back and forth, but the point is they've made zero arrests.

None. No arrest. They have not helped. in any what what when I talked to CJ Davis When I talked to Bill Gibbons. When I talk to the professionals who are actually in charge, they say what's the most helpful thing is having the highway patrol out on the highways.

And I agree. I agree. I don't I don't miss uh this hour, not uh Getting run over by somebody with drive-out packs on the highway. That's what really was draining a lot of the resources away from our police force. And they've been doing the work.

But it was also the council people. But, Jerry, it was also the idea that we still did not have a full complement of Memphis police officers. And one of the arguments was that the addition of the task force helped boost those numbers up.

So I'm wondering, maybe we need to be boosting up the Memphis Police Department numbers and getting more cops out on the street. And so what I was about to say before you made that point was What we've done on the council to increase those numbers, which have increased under my time, is increase their pay. increase their benefits. get them more fleece cars because ours were old. and put more funding into like renovating the Mount Moriah Thrinting.

So we actually have been putting money into our first responders. And I've been one of the biggest champions, especially around their pay. making sure that all our first responders receive the pay that they're owed. Um And and again, and you have what helps it's the it's having the extra force on and And then you think about it, the extra force on the interstate. That doesn't tie somebody up for three hours cleaning up a wreck.

They can be actually out doing that. And so I agree. The THP needs to stay there and help us monitor the interstate. That's the supplement we need, not National Guards walking around our target. Jerry, we're going to get you back on, and I want to have you on for a full hour, and we'll do it at a later hour.

So we don't have to get up at the Kraken Ball. You know, I am always happy to come on. I'm always happy to answer your questions, the people's questions. And I hope that I agreed to a debate on K-Lam with you. I hope that Marcia Blackburn says yes, and maybe you can be one of the moderators.

Well, we have extended the offer, and so we will let you know what the senator says. We did invite the senator on. Heard people said maybe in a couple of weeks.

Steve, you just heard Jerry Green on K-Wham. And one of the weird things about K-Wam, we're the one conservative news station in America, and we like to hear from everybody, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

Well, and that's the thing and the way it should be. I mean, if we're going to win, quote, as conservatives and as Republicans, why should we be afraid to compare our views with their views? Particularly now again, some of the views that we're getting from the DSA woke radical Democrats are way out there. But the more they talk, the better we do. It's a great point.

And look, Jerry Greene, do you think she has a fair argument here? She's challenging Marsha Blackburn to a debate, and she's actually quoting Marcia Blackburn saying there's we need robust debates. Yeah, and I think that while I understand tactically why Marsha Blackburn doesn't want to debate, I mean, she's supposedly has a big lead, why not sit on it? But tactics and strategy also aren't good for policy because Marsha or Jerry Green or David Hatley or Lauren Kingston are going to be governor. And when you go into that office, it might be nice.

to be able to argue to the legislature that you should support my legislative priorities because I put them out there, I debated them, I discussed them, the people voted for me because they supported those policies. And you should too.

So, as a policy matter, I support debates. I think candidates ought to be able to step up, show the distinctions and differences between them and their opponents, because that's part of the political process, and it's definitely part of the policy process. Steve, tonight, Republicans kick off their midterm convention. You know, they used to do these many, many years ago, and they stopped because they really had no impact at all on the midterm elections. How do you think this plays out?

What do you want to see tonight? You know, I think it's going to be good for President Trump and and the other Speakers to have their chance to kind of lay out their agenda that they want to promote during the midterm. I think we've spent too much time talking about. What we could have, shoulda, would have done and have it because the Senate hadn't helped, the House has such a narrow majority. But I think the focus has to be on what's next, not what Biden did, not what the Democrats are doing wrong.

I think Republicans have to lay out a clear agenda in these next couple of days of. Here's what's next, and here's how we're going to do it with your help, giving us a bigger majority in the Senate, a bigger majority in the House, letting us keep those bodies so that we can actually accomplish what's next on the agenda. But I think if their only focus is how bad the Democrats are, that's what the Democrats do. They hate Trump. It's Trump derangement syndrome on I think Republicans need to offer an alternative.

I know Ted Cruz is out there saying that Republicans have done a lousy job of promoting what they've actually accomplished. Is he right there? I agree. And I think that they also need to lay out some of the reasons why, for example, gas prices are high. We haven't built a new refinery in this country, thanks to the liberals, thanks to the regulations, since 1977.

So we can have all this oil, but you don't turn it into gas or diesel or other product if you don't have the refineries. And the refineries we can build today will be more efficient, cleaner, more effective, more cost-effective. And I think laying out Why California has gas prices that are $2 higher than the rest of the country is because the same policies they've put on the rest of us are what they've done to themselves in California. Steve, got to leave it there, my friend. But we appreciate you coming on.

So, how does the stock market tend to perform during these election years compared with non-election years? Yeah, that's a great question. And we get a lot of phone calls, especially like midterm elections, presidential elections, and just people concerned about.

well, how's this policy going to affect my portfolio? And a lot of times we tell them, election years can certainly attract a lot of attention from investors, but historically, the market has continued to be driven primarily by broader economy rather than election itself. Do the elections, would you say presidential elections, midterm elections actually drive market performance, or are there other factors here? I know inflation has been a big concern of late. You know, policy can definitely affect markets.

And when we talk about what does that particularly affect, we think about certain types of industries. You know, we look at health care policy that can affect certain stock positions that you may have exposed to the healthcare sector. You know, we talk about energy. We're seeing it right now with the war in Iran and how gas prices are going through the roof. And we're talking about new oil production out of Venezuela.

So, I mean, Elections certainly have some kind of influence, but what we look at as financial advisors is we look at the broader economy and good, strong balance sheets. See, I've always felt, and tell me if this is wrong, Adam, you can throw something at me. Don't throw anything at me, but tell me if this is wrong. I think there's Wall Street and there's Main Street, you know, and sometimes, you know, there are a lot of people that are not invested in Wall Street. And, you know, they're dealing with other issues out there, you know, pocketbook issues, you know, on Main Street.

Definitely. I mean, and to go even further on the financial advising space, we're not just here to tell you which stocks or bonds to pick and choose or buy. We have real-life conversations around the Main Street.

Okay, comprehensive planning. Your dollar doesn't go as far. Why is that? You know, we have an educational conversation around high inflation. It erodes the spending power.

So we try to talk to people and say, listen, here's how this could affect you, not just on your stock portfolio, but your everyday life. And also, it's good. I mean, if you are in the stock market, to be prepared, you know, because there are some things that may happen during an election cycle and election season that would not happen normally. Definitely. And that's why we tell people not to make your portfolio decisions off of short-term volatility or short-term things.

You know, we want you to stay long-term, be diversified, and look at the fundamentals of what makes people successful in the market. That's evaluating things like, you know, what's the inflation rate right now? What are This company you're looking at, what's their balance sheet? Are they running a net positive or a net negative? We want to look at these things as a long-term investment strategy and not some short-term decision.

I'm wondering if people, you know, and we we hear this all the time, is that people vote on pocketbook issues like the the price of gasoline or grocery prices. Is that really true? Uh definitely. I mean, a lot of people do. The knee-jerk reaction is a real thing, and we don't shy away from it.

Um we just try to talk you off the ledge, if that, you know, if that makes any sense. We try to tell you, like, here's historically, here's how the SP 500 has performed. Have we seen some peaks? Yes. Have we seen some valleys?

Yes. But if we look at a graph of the SP 500 over a 40-year timeframe, it's an upward slope.

So that's the reason why we say let's stay invested. And even short-term volatility could be a good buying opportunity. During election season, what do you advise when folks are saying, okay, you know, I want to invest in the stock market? What sectors, what industries are hot, I would say these days? We just go back to the fundamentals, Todd.

We say, you know, what is your risk tolerance? Where are you at? You're talking about Main Street. Is where are you at currently in your job? Are you approaching retirement?

Let's put the noise to the side here, but think about your current situation and your risk tolerance and how you're allocated. Um we're gonna see some some volatility, some short-term swings, but staying invested, having conversations with your financial advisor, that's what we're here to do, is just to to Lay out the facts away from the fiction. Good morning, Monica. Hope you're doing well today. Good morning, Todd. I'm feeling great. You know, I'm surprised that you're going on and on and on about Marsha Blackburn not wanting to defeat.

She spilled himself so many times. We've learned a lot by her being on your show already. I'm going to vote for her whether she has a debate or whatever else. And she doesn't want to do it. I don't care.

I'm going to vote for her because she's a class act. I'm surprised at you. You're supposed to you're you're her friend. And she comes on your show as a drop of a dam. And so, yes, I'm voting for Marcia Blackbourne.

And I don't care whether she has a debate or not, I know her views. She's been at the White House. I mean, this A lady that she just had a green, she put me to sleep. I mean that's that's like a that's a neighborhood voice. That's not uh you know someone speaking with authority.

I I said, uh, I'm voting for Marsha Blackburn. She doesn't have to have debate. For me, because I know the type of lady she is. You've taught us about her by having her on your show. Oh, look, I've endorsed.

No, no, no. Monica, I've actually endorsed Marshall Blackburn.

So she's got my vote. She had my vote in the primary. But I have a rule, and this has nothing to do with Marshall Blackburn. This is just my rule that I've lived by for many, many, many years: is that I believe if you want to run for office, you should be willing to debate your opponents. And I think that's important, not just for the candidates, but I think it's important for the electorate, Monica, to see that conservative values and viewpoints do stand up and they do trump whatever the left may be arguing.

And so I think that there's something missing when the candidates don't do that. I don't care. I'm going to vote for her. She's ass ass. And you need to break that rules.

Rules have made to be changed and brought up to times. Leave that alone. Leave her alone. I mean, she's up there working and she's doing what she does. Just leave her up.

This lady here is trying to get. To some notoriety or some publicity, or wherever a Marsha Blackburn is, leave her alone. I'm gonna vote for Monica. Monica, you have made your point. You have made your argument.

What, um This Memphis Tiger situation, this is. This is bizarre.

So it turns out there's a new wrinkle now in whatever happened Saturday at the concessions. And all I can tell you is. Uh this is a first world problem. That's all I can tell you.

So the Daily Menvian sent one of their reporters to review the $7 meals, right?

So the athletic director said part of the whole enticement to bring your family was to make it affordable.

So the athletic director, Ed Scott, said, look, here's what we're going to do. We're going to have what we call $7 meals. One of them is like chicken tenders and what, potato chips and a drink. And the other was, what, mac and cheese and something. And the other was a hot dog, a hot dog, popcorn and soda, all for $7.

It's a pretty darn good deal.

Well, it turns out that there were hoops that people had to go through, and the Daily Miffy in doing this piece. And they actually reviewed the food. First of all, they said there was no mac and cheese. You couldn't find, but who's going to eat mac and cheese? It was 120 degrees in that stadium.

Give me a mempop for crying out. You know what? Forget the mempops. Give me the freezer they put the mempops in. Can I rent that, please?

But anyway, they reviewed. I've got to get to the reviews here.

So they went to go get the hot dog. And the writer, who wrote this piece? Oh, yes, Sophia Surrett. She is the Daily Memphian writer here. She says, I got the hot dog value meal.

Hot dog, popcorn box, and a canned drink. She said the meal was advertised with chips and a drink. But she said when she got there, the meal only came with a canned drink. They couldn't get bottled water. She wanted bottled water.

Ah, these kids drink your coke, it's not gonna kill you. At least not right away. She says, Now, I understand some people like their hot dog plane, but I'm not one of them. There was no mustard or ketchup packets anywhere to be found. Oh, the horror.

She said the hot talk itself did not disappoint. It held up to its end of the bargain.

Okay, it was a hot dog. What are you gonna? Was it like a Wahlburger's? Was it a Bison bratwurst or whatever? No, it was a hot dog.

The popcorn was fine as well, and the box could also be used as a paper fan in the extreme heat.

Well, there you go. You see, you take you take lemons and you make lemonade. Then she went on to the chicken tenders. Oh, and this was the problem.

So, say you got kids, and one of the kids wants a hot dog, and the other wants the chicken tenders. According to the Daily Memphine, you have to go to separate locations.

So, it's not like you know, go to one place to get your $7 value meal. Greg Morris, his wife and three kids, were excited to come to a Tigers game after not having been to one in several years. Like me, the family had to hit two different concession stands to buy the meal deals because one of the children likes chicken tenders and the other likes hot dogs. Mr. Laura says it makes it hard for families.

But you gotta do what you gotta do. You gotta do what you gotta do. That's a great way to look at it, Mr. Boris.

Meanwhile, in some third world countries, people are running around with spears trying to stab boars for supper. And here in Memphis, we're wandering around trying to find a catch-up packet. Mm-hmm. You can't make this up. Oh, but the problem was, according to the Daily Memphin, and you really don't want to you don't want to irritate the staff writers of the Daily Memphin because they'll write bad reviews.

And they pointed out that uh the lines were like an hour Together. I mean, that's a long time, an hour. Also, they said that the chocolate chip crumble cookie would set you back $5.50.

So. All that to zero, I don't know what to tell you. I mean, eat before you go to the game. You know, I mean, there are plenty of great restaurants out there. But anyway, University of Memphis says they're fixing all of this, so no need to worry.

The next home game. Everything's going to be okay. Uh, let me tell you what's coming up on tomorrow's show.
