From the Mighty 990 Broadcast Center, you're waking up in Starnes Country with Todd Starnes. And good morning, Memphis. Good morning, Mid-South. I'm Todd Stearns, and thank you for joining us in Stearns Country in the principal Toyota Memphis studio. And of course, today is a very sad day on a number of accounts.
Today's show is just going to be a little different, and I think that for many of us. And I I don't mean to speak for anyone other than than myself. I just feel like yesterday, hearing the news, and we shared it in real time here on the Mighty 990, I feel like I've been gutted. And I I feel like I've been sucker punched. It's still difficult waking up this morning, and I suspect many of us had a pretty restless night, not much sleep across the nation, as we come to terms and come to grips with The assassination of Charlie Kirk.
And it's hard to imagine that he is gone. And there is a lot of anger. There is a lot of sorrow. There is a lot of frustration. There is a a lot of um Concern.
These are all very valid feelings, ladies and gentlemen, and we're going to work through it together here on the Mighty 990. I'm Todd Starnes and I Knew Charlie Kirk for many years. and met Charlie when he was just starting out. And was on my radio show in the early days of Turning Point USA. And I'll never forget when he came over and introduced himself in the lobby when I was working at Fox News Channel in New York City.
and just a tall, lanky kid who loved America. And he loved God. And he loved God first, and then he loved his country. But he was a young man who went out there and really did represent the best and the brightest of who we are as Americans. The idea that we ought to have civil discourse, the idea that we ought to be open for debate.
You know, when I bought Kwam. gosh, it's been well over five years ago now. Charlie's show was one of the first programs that we picked up. And since that time, we had been the radio home for Charlie Kirk here in the Mid South. And we heard from so many young people.
And one of the reasons we carried it on delay, first of all, is that he and I were actually radio competitors, so his show airs live at the same time mine did. But one of the reasons we carried it late was so that young people could. Could listen to it in real time on the radio. You know, at that hour, kids are in school. And of course, Charlie had a lot of.
And I was getting some blowback yesterday and last night because of my remarks. And I Um what you see is what you get with me on the radio. There is no pretense. And if I'm having a bad day, you're going to know about it. If I'm having a great day, you're going to know about it.
And if something's really bothering me, well, you're going to hear about that too. But people were upset because I said that, and I admitted that I was filled with rage yesterday. And I want to respond to those people because I think some folks are really conflicted, and there are a lot of well-meaning Christians out there. That are putting out statements that are just really rubbing me the wrong way. And I will say this today as we start this show: yes, I am filled with rage.
And it's going to take some time for that to simmer down. And I do believe that the Bible tells us that it's okay to be angry, it's okay to be indignant. It must be righteous indignants, but I believe in this case it is. You know, I think back to the founding of our country and the founding fathers, and many, many Christian pastors reflect on their teachings and writings, and I too believe that America was meant to be a Christian nation. But you know what our founding fathers were also?
They were fierce warriors and fighters. and they killed many British to secure our freedom.
So there is a time for For righteous anger. There is a time for righteous indignation. And I believe that we are at At such a time as this in our country. And we need to have a conversation as conservatives. But it's really not liberal versus conservative.
This is really about America versus the left. Because when you step back and think about it, and the New York Times and a lot of the news magazines are attacking Charlie Kirk, calling him a far right extremist. What exactly was extreme about his beliefs? Charlie believed in God. Charlie believed in family.
He believed that young men should get married to young ladies and start families. he believed that young men should behave as young men. and young ladies should behave as young ladies. Charlie believed in free speech. He believed in freedom of religion.
He was pro-life. I've never understood. You know, people like to throw around that term, but what exactly does that mean? Because when you drill down, What we do here on K Wham is what Turning Point U S A does. We invite both sides to the table, and we have those kinds of conversations.
So, this morning we're going to do that, and we're going to open up our phone lines, and we're going to talk about Charlie. We've gotten so many calls from so many of our listeners. And I just want to say thank you. Thank you for the kind words. Um It's a difficult time for all of us.
It was a difficult time for our staff yesterday, but it was a difficult time for the thousands. of Charlie Kurt fans here. here in the mid-south. We've got to do something in this country about the violence, and we live in a very dangerous city. But there are elements working even here in Memphis to silence conservatives.
And we cannot allow them to win the day. We can't allow people like Senator London Lamar to win the day. That woman, what she wrote yesterday, by the way, there's a big Turning Point USA event scheduled at the University of Memphis. featuring Riley Games. That's coming up, I believe, in November.
And now Senator London Lamar is calling for that event to be cancelled.
So again, that was the whole point of it all. Is that whoever did this wants to silence conservatives and people of faith in this country? And we just can't allow that to happen. We cannot allow that to be. to happen and I will not allow that to happen on this radio station.
I'm only going to share this one time, and I share it within the context of what we're dealing with and what conservatives are dealing with here in this country and right here in Memphis. I get a lot of death threats. A lot.
Some of them We take seriously. Others We don't. But I get a lot. Every morning. Every morning when I get up And I drive in to our news bunker here in East Memphis every morning.
The first thing I do is look underneath my car. to make sure no one's planted a device. It's become part of the daily routine. And I was thinking about that yesterday. as we got word that Charlie had been assassinated.
And I thought to myself, This cannot be the new normal in America. We cannot let this be the new normal in America. And I'm just going to make this promise to you. And again, I'm only going to say this one time because it's not about me. But they're not going to shut me up.
We're going to keep doing what we do every single day here on the Mighty 990. We're going to continue speaking truth to power. We're going to do it in a winsome way. Hopefully you'll share a few laughs along the way.
Sometimes you're going to get riled up. But at least you know where I'm coming from and where all of us are coming from on the issues. I only have one rule for our radio show host. And that is, they have to be authentic. There has to be authenticity.
And if there's not authenticity, then you've lost all your credibility.
So we believe in authenticity here on the Mighty 990. There's a lot of ugliness out there. But today we're going to open up the phone lines and we're going to let you have your say. Our telephone number, 901-260-5926. That's 901-260-5926.
Also, it is 9-11. the day that Muslim terrorists flew jetliners into buildings In the name of their religion. will be remembering those who lost their lives. Also, breaking news this morning out of Fraser. I was just on the phone with the Memphis Police Department a few moments ago.
They are working to get us more information. But here's what we can tell you. A Bartlett police officer was injured, we believe shot in the shin. was injured during a warrant situation in Fraser this morning. All of this happening on Delwood Avenue off North Watkins Street.
Now, the officer rushed to Regional One, and there had been rolling, the officer's already there, so there had been some rolling road blockages so the ambulance could get to the hospital. We understand the officer is going to be, we believe, okay. But I want you to say a prayer for this Bartlett police officer who was injured this morning. We're going to keep you updated on that story as well. Before we go to break.
I want to go to the phone lines because our next guest had to step out of class, and I don't want him to get in trouble. You hear Walker Baudry every Friday. Walker is a student at Briarcrest Christian School, and he does a terrific job with our play-by-play. And I got a text message last night from Walker, and I thought, uh-oh, what's this all about? Walker wrote one of the most beautiful notes about Charlie Kirk, and Walker is a young conservative.
And I want to bring him. I asked him if he would call in this morning. Walker, first, good to have you with us. We're not going to keep you long, so I don't want you to get in trouble. Yeah.
Hey, Todd. Thank you for having me on the show. It means a lot. Walker, you wrote me a letter last night, and I'm wondering, first of all, tell me about Charlie Kirk and how important was Charlie Kirk in your life? Um From seeing him on YouTube the first time I remember watching him and just seeing him If God He Talk with people who May have not agreed with him, and he.
Tried to change their mind on some things, and sometimes you can't do that, but that's what he tried to do. He spoke the truth. He spoke about his faith, he was very Uh He was very upfront about his faith, the importance of family. Um But he was a patriot and He loved his country and he loved free speech. And It was I was Very upset yesterday.
Walker, I'm curious about your classmates.
So were they feeling those same concerns that you had when you got the news yesterday?
So It happened. About He got shot. going into seventh period. And so not a lot of people knew about it, but after school, Um, and when it came out that he had passed, um, I had a ton of texts from a bunch of people. Uh just talking about it.
And I'm in a group chat with a ton of guys and they were all just completely um upset about it. Because He meant so much to our generation. because of what he did and because of what he stood for, and that he was so I I shouldn't even have to say that he was so brave because all he did was talk. The fact that that now has to be something to be brave about in this country is. It's scary.
Walker, how old are you? Seventeen years old. I think, Walker, and your courage to come on the radio this morning and to talk about this, I have such great respect for that, Walker. But we have to take a stand, and we can't back down. And I have to imagine that now, Walker, they've kind of unleashed millions of Charlie Kirks all across this country.
I think At a time like this, We can't we have to continue to do We have to continue to Speak and talk because They wanted to silence us. And they may have Silenced Charlie Kirk yesterday. But in doing that They got a lot of people. to start talking. And I know that and I know that, that will happen and it his goal and his message will continue to be said through millions of Americans.
Well said. And Walker, I know that you also sent a letter, an email, to your great government teacher there. And Dr. Sherry Hopper is one of the finest government teachers in America. And also you sent a note to your principal.
And what did you ask of them last night? I Sent an email to my principal and Dr. Offer, as you said, because I wanted her to sponsor. Yeah. Yeah.
wanted to start a turning point club at I feel like After that happened yesterday. We can't just be quiet anymore. We have to continue to speak And Use our Right. God-given right to free speech. To Continue to push the important values in life, which are family, Faith and just continue to support this great country.
Um so I think I think it'll be a great club for Briarcrest. I'm really excited about it. Um, I just felt like it needed to be done.
Well said. Walker, we're going to let you get back to class, and I know everybody looks forward to hearing you on the radio Friday night calling the Briarcrest game. But Walker, God bless you, and thank you so much for taking a stand and calling in this morning. Thank you, sir. All right, Walker Bojery.
Um. It's hard not to get um That's what it's about. And maybe just maybe the issue here is Is that we start turning point USA chapters on every school campus in the Mid-South? A 17-year-old kid. He's got more courage than a lot of us grown-ups.
Got to take a break. Let's check in with Commander Chuck. All right. Again, just to give you an update on that breaking news situation off of Delwood Avenue, there has been a shooting involving a police officer. We're going to walk back for just a moment.
If it's an MPD officer or a Bartlett officer, we're getting some conflicting information. We're waiting for Memphis police public information to let us know. But it looks like the officer is going to be okay. We'll keep you updated on what happened. We believe a warrant was being served when all of that went down.
Let's go to the phone lines: 901-260-5926. Dean is listening to us in East Memphis today. Dean, what's on your mind? Oil Other than being Having having it feel like you have your guts ripped out from yesterday. I made a post the other day, I guess it was yesterday, day before yesterday, about.
being shot at on I-40 coming on the Sam Cooper. I got a bullet hole in my truck. And this morning I wake up to the neighbors text. Keep it family friendly, Dean. The FCC requires it.
Yes, sir. I'm doing my best. But uh I mean I talked to a neighbor last night about Charlie, you know, and she said it's I I I feel kind of funny. Because I never knew the man. But you don't have to know somebody.
I mean, we've been watching Real America's Voice for a long time and You know, he comes into your house every day with the with The news story. Yeah. That and the other, and you see. The uh Turning point things that he did on the campuses and everything else, and he makes you feel like you're a part of his life, and that's. That's the way People that influence us make us feel.
They make them feel like they're we're. a part of their lives and it's just It's just a solemn day today with with the loss of him and nine eleven. I normally, when I usually go home, it's, you know, these are long days doing the shows. And last night, Dean, I just. I kept on driving down Poplar and ended up.
I go to Germantown Baptist Church, that's where I'm a member. I I I just needed to be around people and just uh sat there and Uh it was just so amazing to hear our pastor who Really started the prayer service talking about Charlie and the fact that he watched Charlie's videos and spending a time in prayer. And it's a reminder that really, this battle that we're facing, it's a spiritual battle. More so than a political battle. And we've got to remember that.
Yes.
Well, it sounds like I don't know if the police are there. Dina, I am so sorry this happened to you. It's just not right.
Well, I just I just got word from my neighbor across the street that that uh told me about mine. He just he works at Mercedes just down the street from y'all. And said, he went around the corner and he said he just went past a bunch of vehicles that got busted into last night. Yeah, I'm about to call MPD. All right.
Crime is down. Yeah, crime is down. Right. All right, Dean, hang in there, my friend, and we certainly appreciate your friendship. Again, we're going to be taking your calls, ladies and gentlemen, 901-260-5926.
That's 901-260-5926. Remembering Charlie Kirk, and we're going to play some audio from what happened at the University of Alabama. Also at Liberty University, where People have just been gathering, young people, and you heard Walker Boudry from Briarcrest call in. We want to hear from you this morning as well. 901-260-5926.
This is Starnes Country and the principal Toyota Memphis studio. We'll be right back. And welcome back to Stearns Country here in the Principal 2 at a Memphis studio. I'm Todd Stearns on a really difficult day, but we're getting through it together, and that's what we do here on the Mighty 990. Yesterday, your only radio station providing live, continuous coverage of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and we will continue to do so today.
I was in the middle of an interview on my national radio show, which is 11 to 2, and I would encourage you folks to listen in and call in 11 to 2. We were talking to Senator James Langford out of Oklahoma when the word came down. And so the senator was riding a shotgun as we cover that news. Speaking of breaking news here, again, this is coming out of Frasier. We understand that there is a massive police presence.
We are now hearing that more than one police officer may have been injured here. We're talking about Memphis Police and Bartlett.
So we're getting a lot of info coming in, but we're waiting for the official word from the Memphis Police Department's public information officers. We know something big is going on because they've summoned all three of the PIOs to the crime scene. And this all started as they were trying to serve a warrant.
So we'll keep you updated on that story on our social media pages. Also, real quick. Folks, I I want you. We've got to send a message here, and I can't think of a better message than for hundreds, if not thousands, of Christians in the Mid-South and people of faith, conservatives to gather. and pray and take a stand.
For Charlie and what his life meant and what his mission was. And tonight we're gonna have the opportunity to do that. We're so honored that the Memphis Young Republicans are holding a vigil for Charlie. It starts tonight, 6.30. At the Germantown Municipal Park Pavilion.
It's 1900 South Germantown Road. Again, that is the Charlie Kirk Vigil. That's tonight, 630. Germantown Municipal Park Pavilion at 1900 South Germantown Road. If nothing, just come out.
And there's strength in numbers, but there's also comfort. And I think there are a lot of folks. There are a lot of folks in Memphis right now that could. Use a hug. And um We'll be doing some hugging.
later tonight at this vigil. Let's go to the phone lines 901-260-5926. Justin in Collierville wants to weigh in on Charlie. Hi, Justin. What's on your mind this morning?
Hey, good morning, Todd. yesterday you know i was absolutely floored when i heard the pass Of Charlie, but you know, my first. Um Came in, I was that, you know, Charlie died for his faith because even all his arguments that you would listen to. Is he brought the gospel to? Yeah.
To a broken and lost world. In fact, he always ushered in people to the front of the line that disagreed with him. Because he was our modern day Paul of Taurus. He took lofty ideas. He tore them apart.
He was gracious with people. And he pointed them back to Christ. You know, whenever personally, just as a Christian, I've listened to Charlie. You know, I've felt a deep sense of conviction that, um, you know, maybe I wasn't always living my life perfect, but you know, just Charlie of how brave he was to go into hostile areas. That he preached more of a gospel message.
I'm being honest, and I don't mean this to be derogatory, than most American churches. You will not hear that divisive measure. You know, when the message of Christ and the gospel It's supposed to divide. It's supposed to bring people out of darkness. And Charlie gave his life for that, carrying out the mission to Jesus Christ, to a lost world.
So I'm I'm completely floored and upset, and I've had many conversations with people I know that. Are not necessarily Christians, but they understand the message that he was bringing.
So I think you're going to see. You have to give Charlie credit for the revival that has happened across this country right now with young adults because he was on college campus all across the United States for years spreading This message When they tried to shut him down, they protested, they even rioted when he was there.
So You know, thank God that men like Charlie Kirk exist and are brave, and they will go into a hostile. World and proclaim the message of Jesus Christ as our Savior. You know, Justin, that was so well said. And, you know, you're right about trying to shut him down. I remember a couple of years ago, they brought Kyle Rittenhouse, Turning Point did.
They brought Kyle to the University of Memphis, and the mob literally ran them off the campus. They were so panicked. I got a call from Turning Point headquarters, and they're like, Is there a safe house? Is there a place that we can all evacuate to? And I said, Absolutely, and rushed over to the radio station.
And the radio station became a safe house. A lot of people don't know this story, Justin, but we literally had armed security guards forming a perimeter around K-Wham that night because people were afraid that rampaging mob at the University of Memphis was going to show up and try to attack them. That's the level of violence that Charlie and his crew faced every single time they went out on a university campus. Yeah, and I just don't know, as I was reading through my Bible yesterday of Corinthians, where Paul was talking about. You know, I took lashes.
At one point, they had to lower him in a basket to get away because there were death threats. I was like, I was like. You know Charlie's not in the Bible, but a lot of things that he did with his life were very, very biblical.
So I'll just leave you on the final note is We have to be brave, not for politics, but to carry out the message of Jesus Christ to a lost world, because that's the only thing that's going to. Save and stop all this political violence. Justin, well said, and we appreciate you calling in. And thank you for being a part of our KeyWham community. 901-260-5926 is our telephone number.
That's 901-2600. 260-5926. Kristen writing in on our Facebook Live this morning: in a country of beta males and soy boys, Charlie was a lion among men. And I think that you are going to see the results of that because a generation of young men.
Now understand they don't have to be ashamed of who they are. They don't have to be ashamed of their masculinity. They don't have to be ashamed of the things that make a man a man that society would call. Yeah. So, the legacy here is going to be far reaching.
Now, I mentioned Senator London Lamar. She is now urging the University of Memphis to cancel all Turning Point USA events out of a fear of violence and a threat to public safety. You know, this is really sort of rich coming from London Lamar. I mean, if we're going to do that, we have to cancel every event in Memphis, Tennessee. If we're concerned of fear and threats to public safety, we've got to shut everything down.
But the whole point of this was to shut down conservatives. To shut down political speech. And that's why this is political terrorism. And by the way, just to give you an update, FBI arrested two people, and neither one of the guys. We were involved in the shooting, and so now the pardon me.
The Man Hut continues. 901-260-5926, our telephone number. That's 901-2666-666. 260-5926. By the way, with some news out of Middle Tennessee, MTSU, The Assistant Dean of Students.
Posting a message last night again, this is the Assistant Dean of Students says Look like old Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate, zero sympathy. As soon as that was sent to me, I said this assistant dean of students needs to be fired. immediately. and we can now report that the Assistant Dean of Students is on the unemployment line.
She has been fired, removed from her position. I want to play something for you. This is. Charlie on a podcast, and he was asked a question just, I mean, this is very recently. And he was asked a question about how he wants to be Remembered.
Let's take a listen. You want to be remembered. If I die? Everything just goes away. How would you, if you could be associated with one thing, how would you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered for for courage for my faith. That that would be the most important thing. The most important thing is my faith in my life. Mm-mm. All right, there you have it.
Charlie Kirk. and he wants to be remembered for his faith. And that's us, ladies and gentlemen. That should be how we want to be remembered. I'm I'm not doing a commercial for a church, but if you You need to go check out what's happening at Germantown Baptist Church.
There is a pastor there that is preaching the word of God, that is speaking truth to the culture. And it is a very rare thing to see these days. I'm not disparaging anybody's church. That's not the point of this. But I'm just saying: if you're looking for a pastor and a congregation that is willing to stand up and speak truth to the culture and do so in a Christ-like spirit and manner, you've got to go check them out.
Germantown Baptist Church, I'm there on the fifth row every Sunday. and would love to see you there.
So here we are. It's going to be a rough day. But I will say this. As we go through these next hours together, that God is still in control.
Now that doesn't mean that this is the time to sing kumbaya and hold hands and light candles, and maybe that there is a time and a place for that, but this is still a time to be upset and to be angry and frustrated. But I also want to remind you of this as we go to break. and how we got to this spot Because on this program and on this radio station, we will always speak truth into the culture. And the fact is That really for since 2007, 2008, When Barack Obama came onto the scene, the Democrats have been dehumanizing Conservatives. And it started with Obama calling all of us better Americans.
He said we cling to our guns and our religion. And then it was Hillary Clinton calling us an irredeemable basket of deplorables, meaning we are beyond redemption if you hold to Christian and Conservative views. It was Joe Biden calling Christians the dregs of society at the human rights campaign. It was Maxine Waters telling them to absolutely harass us in restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations. It was the Democrats who called us an existential threat to democracy just in the last election cycle.
They have called us Nazis and little Hitlers. They have called us homophobes and bigots and racists and xenophobes. And, ladies and gentlemen, I hold every single one of them responsible for what happened yesterday afternoon at Utah Valley University. They all have blood on their hands today. All right, it's going to be another hot day here in the Mid-South.
Our chief meteorologist, Laura Huckabee, dropping by in just a few moments with your forecast. Jim Miller will have an update on that breaking news story out of Frasier, where we're hearing as many as two officers may have been injured this morning trying to serve a warrant. Also, don't forget, tonight, 6:30, we need to send a statement. That we're going to take a stand, and we're not going to be scared. We're not going to be bullied or silenced.
The vigil for Charlie Kirk coming up tonight at Germantown Municipal Park at the Pavilion. That's right off of South Germantown Parkway. All of that starts at 6:30. I'll be sharing a few remarks, but this is all brought to you by the Memphis Young Republicans.
Well, we're going to be switching gears. We're literally taking a very hard turn in the conversation because we have a big event coming up this weekend, and I'm very excited to welcome in Jenny Lane Watson, who is with the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival. Jenny Lane, good to have you with us. Thank you for having me. Wow, so this is exciting.
I've never been to a hummingbird festival. I've been to a barbecue festival, but we probably don't want to be barbecuing the hummingbirds. You wouldn't get much meat, I'm sure.
So, yeah, definitely don't want to do that. Yeah, don't do that. Tell us all about the festival that's happening. Happening, the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival. Oh, we're so excited.
This is our first year to have the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival in South Haven. Everyone knows, of course, Getwell Road, there's Snowden Grove Park. There is a newly formed, newly formed hummingbird garden back in the back, in the middle of all those baseball fields. And our initiative is really just to target not only just the conservation migration but also education around hummingbirds. But there is so much more in particular to just native plants and how important they are to, again, not just the conservation, but the migration and.
Really taking care of these little guys. I love this story and this festival. I know on the weekends we have the Mid-South Gardening Show, which is our live two-hour show, and they're always talking about what plants you need to have in your backyard to attract the birds. That's right. That's right.
Well, and we've got a great, the thing that I'm really probably most proud of this year, with this being our inaugural year for the Hummingbird Festival in South Haven, is the speakers forum that we have. And we have a great speaker. His name's Habitat Harry. He really focuses on native plants and the forgotten flora of North Mississippi, but not just Mississippi-specific, but our surrounding areas. And he'll be talking about that.
It's going to be fantastic.
Okay, the website address, by the way, northmshummingbirdfestival.org. That's NorthMS. Hummingbirdfestival.org, and you'll find all the information there.
So, somebody shows up at the Hummingbird Festival. What are they going to be doing? Oh, man, there's a lot.
So, first of all, we've got a lot of great community support in that. It takes a village to do this. And this, of course, our admission is free, which we're so proud of this year. Not just the admission to the park and the garden, the festival, but also to the speakers forum. There's going to be vendors, food trucks.
Miss a BL House is going to have a beer garden, which is kind of cool. But the education that's going to be within the garden. Specific to again Hummingbirds, backyard birding, butterflies, native plants. Lichterman Nature Center will be present as well. But also, our speakers' forum, which is going to be held at Forever Young, which is the Senior Citizen Center there at Snowden Grove Park.
This is going to be a lot of fun. And what a great way to even bring your kids, especially small kids, and introduce them to hummingbirds. Oh, yeah. And we've got a great kids' activity with a scavenger hunt throughout the park. It's going to be super fun.
But there's also just going to be a lot of great community events throughout the day. And we look forward to having it this year. And next year, we plan to not only have a two-day event, but there will be expansion within the park this fall, believe it or not. We're going from phase one through phase three this fall. It's going to be a huge expansion, so we're super happy about it.
And tell us how all of this came about. People, y'all are just hanging out one day and say, you know what, we need to honor the hummingbird.
Well, it's actually a pretty remarkable story in that my husband and I own the Wild Birds Unlimited, which is a backyard nature shop in South Haven on Getwell Road. One of our customers came in, and literally people share stories with us about how they get into birding all the time. And this one gentleman, who's a good friend of ours now, was telling us how much his mother, who was a master gardener for like 26 years, which is really impressive. Um loved hummingbirds and Just the conversation of we would love to have something here in North Mississippi because we live on one of the largest migratory bird belts in the United States. I didn't realize that.
Yes, sir. And right now it's peak migration season. And these little hummers, you know, come from the northeast down through this area to Central America and Mexico, which is about a 2,000-mile journey.
So they stop over a lot of times in this area. We actually have some hummingbirds that actually winter here. Um don't go quite far south, they stay around, um, but Um Believe it or not, this one customer He is the alderman, one of the aldermen in South Haven who is that area and It's like, hey, I think we can make this happen. Let's put a park together, let's put a garden together. We could do a festival, and that happened within a few weeks' time.
And we've got this beautiful park, this garden, and here's our first festival. I love this. And again, folks, North MS Hummingbird Festival.org. The festival is coming up this weekend, September 13th, Saturday. What time do folks need to start showing up?
Well, we started at 8, so our vendors will be setting up prior to that.
So 8 to 2. I know it's a little a different time, but we've got a concert there that Saturday night in South Haven.
So we've got to kind of got to make sure we migrate out of there as well. I know.
Well, and just to be clear, because I know we have some of our listeners that are going to be inquiring, their ears perked up with Beer Garden.
So that'll be open early. Yes, that's really fun. They made a cool nectar seltzer that they're going to have available. A hummingbird nectar. Yeah, sure.
They can do just about anything with those guys. All right, Jenny Lane Watson with the North Mississippi Hummingbird Festival, the inaugural festival being announced right here on the Mighty Night 90. Jenny Lane, thank you for dropping by today. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.
All right, this is going to be a lot of fun, folks. And I think we could all use an escape. And this could very well be the escape for a lot of us.
So, head on over to South Haven. And by the way, while you are there, if you're in the Stowden Grove area, you got to stop by Silo Square. What an incredible shopping destination that is. Great restaurants.
So you can go over to the festival and then maybe grab some lunch or dinner over at Silo Square. And it's almost as if you're transported to just a whole different world when you head over to South Haven. It is really a wonderful thing. All right. Let me explain what's going to happen today on this radio station.
We have the 9/11 memorials that will be happening throughout the day. We're going to be talking about that on the national show. And of course, the very latest information on Charlie Kirk, the search for the killer. Right now, they're suspecting this may have some sort of international ties.
So we'll definitely keep you updated on that. But also, just a reminder that ultimately the fight we are fighting right now is a spiritual battle. I'm reminded of a Bible verse from the Old Testament book of Habakkuk. The sovereign Lord is our strength. He makes our feet like the feet of the deer, and he enables us to go onto the high places, even in the most difficult of days.
Folks, hang in there. Pray for Charlie. Let's pray for the Mid-South. Pray for America. We'll see you later on this morning, 11 o'clock on The Mighty 990.
Mm-hmm.
