Jones, Fox Sports College Football Insider, Bruce Feldman, Still to Come, Saints Safety, Tyrant Matthew, SEC Commissioner, Greg Sankey. And now it's Rich Eisen. Our number three of the Rich Eisen show is on the air. If you're just joining us, some great conversations today, man.
This is that last half hour of our last hour. Bruce Feldman here talking about Travis Hunter would get his vote for the Heisman Trophy right now. And how do you push back on that? You can't.
You can't. If you're watching Colorado, not only are they four on one, like they said, they're two touchdown underdogs last week and they win by almost four. They whipped him. Whipped him. Travis Hunter's unbelievable, man. I'll take him number one right now. And Chris Jones, I just love it when you hear athletes talk about other sports and how greats in those other sports are, are inspiring them. And obviously we're very, we're very Kobe friendly around these parts.
We, you know, we miss him. We talk about him a lot and it's amazing TJ, how many athletes, like what Chris Jones just said, saying, I think of the Mamba mentality all the time to help make me great and sharpen my mind. And Chris Jones says he listens to Kobe Bryant interviews or videos and, and, and press conferences before and after games. There's so many guys asked if I said guys, not guys, men and women who both Kobe had that effect on them and, and they do really look to them, to him for motivation. There's so many of them.
It's, it's really amazing how that, that man's legacy is just going to continue to live on thankfully through all of these other athletes. Yeah. He, he shared that. Right.
I'm sorry. No, that's it. He shared that. He shared that, that story. Yeah.
You know, when did the Mets play? I think it's four 30. Okay. Seven 30 Eastern. So, okay. So you've got time, huh? Oh yeah. Okay.
Oh yeah. Look at you. You, you've got one in your back pocket. Look how you're smiling, man.
I feel good. You've got one in your back pocket. I haven't, I haven't been able to really house money. It's like 16 Mets house money. You had it in game two on, on Monday.
You're sitting here with house money. Fantastic. An hour, an hour one, we, we had a great chat with Israel Adesanya in studio. And again, Chris Jones moments ago, we just stopped the zoom with him.
Let's be fair and balanced because the chiefs are taking on the new Orleans saints on Monday night football. And joining us once again is one of our favorites. Last chatted with him in the final throws of the summer. Tyron Matthew back here in the program. How are you doing?
Tyron? Good to see you. I'm doing good, man.
Really blessed. Can't complain. You know what? It's, it's, it's always great to chat with you. I'm wondering what is going on in your mind when you're going to go back to Arrowhead, where you spent three highly successful seasons in your career, Tyron. Yeah, listen, I'm excited about it. You know, obviously a lot of good memories come back to mind. And then too, it's, you know, relationships, you know, right. So I'm excited to see spags, you know, Coach Reed, a lot of people in the training room and in the scouting department too.
So it'll be fun to catch up, you know, for a little bit before the game, before it gets serious. Of course, of course. What, what's, what, what's your relationship with Reed like from the three years that you were there?
If you've got a good story to kind of illustrate that, Tyron? No, I mean, Coach Reed, man, he was great for me, man. He absolutely, you know, he empowered me, you know, he really did allow me to be myself. And the only thing that I really, you know, kind of regret, right, is, you know, I miss those nights before the games, you know, where he would be kind of talking to the team. And right before he break, he would say, you know, just let the honey badge out of the cage, you know, we're going to be all right. So like I said, man, he's always been an inspiration to me.
And, you know, just one of those coaches that really, really believed in me. What do you mean? What do you mean he would say that to you? What? Tell me. Yeah, well, you know, I'm really a quiet guy, you know, and, you know, I think the people that spend, spend a lot of time with me, they do see my energy, they do see my passion and my enthusiasm. I think that was just Coach Reed kind of reminding me it's that time, you know, like, like you've been quiet all week, but like game day, that's the time for the honey badger to get out of his cage.
So, yeah, that was always cool. So I imagine when you see Coach Reed on Monday night on the field prior to the game, he will not be encouraging for you to let the honey badger out. He'll skip that this time, huh? He'll skip that. He doesn't want to see the honey badger, basically.
He might say, keep that, keep that inside. You may actually say that to you. So walk me through the first four weeks of this season. Listen, when, when your, when your offense scores 91 or the team as a whole scores 91, obviously we know that's not sustainable. And then two tough losses that you could be 4-0, just like the Chiefs, this could easily be 4-0 versus 4-0 on Monday night. How do you assess the first month of this Saints season, Tyron? Well, I thought we got off to a good start. I think those first two weeks were, you know, really everything we've been kind of working towards since the spring.
And, you know, I'll say the last two weeks have, you know, really reminded us of, you know, some of the things that have kind of plagued us the last couple of years. And that's, you know, we're going to be in a lot of close ball games. You know, it's going to be tight.
It's going to be third down, fourth down. And we have to figure out a way to win in those situations. You know, I look back on the last two games that we played, man, and, you know, especially defensively, we played great for maybe 57 minutes in the game, right? And then the last three minutes, we kind of let it get away from us. And so, you know, we've had our opportunity to finish, right, and to kind of close out these games. And defensively, we just hadn't, you know, made enough plays to be able to do that. And so I think that's the mindset right now is, you know, how can we get in these games? We know we're going to be a competitive game, but how can we find a way to make those plays in those critical moments, you know, down the stretch? How do you address that?
I mean, how does one address that subject matter when about closing? Well, it's you, you know, not taking anything off. You know, I think a lot of times, you know, especially defensively, right, you could play, you know, a great game. And then on the last drive, all of a sudden, you know, you want to keep everything in front of you. You're not playing as aggressive.
You're not as, you know, quick to react. So I think it's just detail, right, and that attention to detail and, you know, just really stay focused throughout the course of the whole game. And, you know, I think along with coaches, I think that's my job, too, you know, as a leader is to make sure that, you know, we're all taking deep breaths, and we all understand, you know, what the situation is kind of demanding out of us. Yeah.
I was going to ask that question. You just kind of answered it because your defense has no shortage of, for the lack of better letters, OGs who can deliver that message in real time, knowing that this is the moment that you focus on your technique and your footwork and your P's and your Q's and your film work. And I mean, is that done huddle, sideline?
Like, do you do that or you just assume your teammates kind of get it, too? Tiring. Well, I think it's a good reminder that to never take anything for granted. I think anytime you come to the sideline defensively, it should be some type of communication. Right. And, you know, especially when you get down to the last seconds of a game. Right.
Because those aren't the plays that you were seeing all game. Right. And so these plays are going to be a small menu, but it's what they want to do. And, you know, we just have to be locked in to that.
You know what I mean? And, you know, like you said, we have more than enough players on our side of the ball to be able to, you know, make those plays in those critical situations. And it's just all about us doing it. And so, yeah, I mean, you know, we're on Monday Night Football, the whole world is watching, playing against one of the best offenses, you know what I mean, in football.
And so it's going to be a great challenge for us, but we got to find a way to stay locked in, you know, for the entire, you know, course of the game. Yeah, opportunity. Right. Because what better way to kind of wipe out the last two games than to go into Arrowhead on a Monday night and come out with a dub, you know? Yeah.
I mean, listen, man, it won't be easy. Like, that's a great team. Right. And when we talk about critical situations, you know, down the stretch moments, late in games. Right. I mean, that's pretty much the Chiefs identity. Right. Like they've found ways to make those plays, to make those tackles, you know, really late in the game down the stretch. Some of the biggest games, you know, in the world, right? Like we've seen them done that, you know, Super Bowl after Super Bowl.
So this is definitely be a great test for us because we know that, like, this is a team that's going to play, you know, 60 minutes. And Travis Kelce just had his best game of the season in terms of production, that's for sure. And the narrative and a lot of parts around our football loving nation, Tyron, is that 87s lost a step or he slowed down.
What have you seen on film? Well, to be honest, I think, you know, for all the time, it's probably going to catch up with all of us, but to dismiss Travis as, you know, being anything other than a valuable weapon. I mean, it's just nonsense to even think about it in that way. He's still a savvy player, you know, and you could kind of see throughout the first four weeks that the tension wasn't really on him, right? Like, you could see Rasheed Rice and you could see a lot of other players kind of getting involved in the game plan, right? But like, man, I've known Travis long enough and I've played against him and played with him long enough to know, like, he will be the last person I fall asleep on Monday night, like, because I know at any given moment, man, like, he can make that big time play on third down. He can make those, you know, those great plays in the red zone, right? And we talked about Patrick, right? Extending plays, those secondary plays, you know, I think him and Travis, like, they do that like nobody I've ever seen do it, right? And so, like, the challenge is still there, you know what I mean?
And I mean, he's always been a heavy player, savvy player. And so, man, I don't even buy into a lot of the narrative that's being thrown out there right now by Kelsey. Tyron Matthew here on the Rich Eisen Show.
All right, in a couple minutes, I have left with you here. You know, when somebody's got their phone around them, you can look down when there's a call coming in. I'm wondering if you're around Derek Carr to see the four words, call from Devontae Adams. You've seen that on his phone? Tyron, looking for that on his phone? No, I have not.
I have not seen that. You know, me and Derek, we haven't even talked about that. You know, obviously, you know, you kind of get on social media and you see what's going around. And, you know, obviously, there's always going to be some type of connection, right? Because, you know, Devontae Adams hasn't played with that many quarterbacks, you know, so it's like, where is Aaron Rodgers and where is Derek Carr?
How can we just piece this together and make it, you know, about the Jets or the Saints? And Devontae is a hell of a player, man. Like, don't get me wrong. But, you know, yeah, I like the guys that we have. But like I said, you know, like Devontae is one of those guys, man, like nobody's going to turn that down, you know?
No, of course. And I know whenever these questions come up and, again, this is not your first rodeo, nor is it mine, asking a question like that of somebody like yourself, the answer could be viewed as, well, he doesn't think the guys that are there can do it. Devontae is just a different human. He's a different ball of wax. Like, for everything, he's obviously additive, if you can get him, you know? I mean, he's a special player. Like, you know, last 10 years, like he's been a top three, four, you know, receiver, you know, year in and year out, you know what I mean? And he's highly competitive. You know, I've had a chance to really play against him a couple of times. And man, like he's one of the best, one of the best guys doing it, you know, from just, you know, route running and just his headiness, right? Like, we're just talking about Kelsey being savvy, right?
Like, you know, Devontae had a lot of that in his game too. And, you know, wherever he ends up, man, like, like he's going to make that team better too. Well, I mean, you know, Bourbon Street's not a bad place to hang out, you know? Some great food in your town. Fan base is lit.
Some good food. It's a lot going on, you know? You'll have a good time.
You're practically the mayor of that town, Tyron. You can let them know. Let me know if you see the phone light up, you know, call from Devontae Adams.
Those are very four important words. I'd like to know if you see it. Thanks, Tyron. I appreciate it. Thanks for the time here. Greatly appreciate you as always. Good luck Monday night. Enjoy the reunion for a brief bit and then go ball out.
Thanks for the time. Right back at you. That's Tyron Matthew, everybody, right here on the Rich Eisen Show, one of our favorites of the two and two saints who can go calling card and say, hey, everybody, we're taking on the Chiefs on a Monday night. Call from Devontae Adams. Incoming. Incoming call. New phone.
Who this? Oh, no, it's the same phone, I'm sure, for Derek. He's got the number.
Devontae rocking 702 probably, right? I mean... I don't know. Maybe. But whatever it is, you don't see the area code. I'm sure he's in Derek's phone. Yeah, no, obviously. I don't know if the number pops up, but I don't know if it would say Devontae Adams also.
It might be, you want to say, could be a nickname. I don't know. 15. Baller. Devontae wore 15 at the President of the States. So, you know, his future team, you don't have to worry about. Who's wearing 17 in New Orleans?
Question. Whoever that person is there. And for the Jets, it's Malachi Corley, the rookie. And there's tons of memes of people ripping shirts off of other human beings and saying this is Jet fans taking the number from Corley. A.T. Perry wears 17 in New Orleans.
Nobody has 15. OK, so there you go. OK. OK. The commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, SEC, is joining us next. Always a brilliant chat with Greg Sankey. It's been a while.

eisen show radio network i'm sitting at the rich eisen show desk furnished by granger with supplies and solutions for every industry granger has the right product for you call click ranger.com or just stop by one of my favorites to talk to um he he knows obviously everything that's going on in one of the most important conferences in all of sports the southeastern conference commissioner greg sanky back here on the rich eisen show how you doing commissioner rich i'm better after watching that intro segment in the late 80s i'm the integral director at utica college i'd be there friday nights until like 10 the student sport information director and i would go through the utica college rosters trying to do chris burman nicknames to pass i wonder what you'd be greg uh throwing the kitchen sanky or something like i don't know what it would be i don't know what your burman nickname now in my role i have to be careful with that stuff that's true that's right yes yes you are uh you are in a different uh a different uh part of the business now for sure um and it's interesting um before we get into the the business aspect of things just the georgia alabama game i i remember when i first joined the nfl network and i asked paul tagliabue the commissioner at the time who he roots for right and he said he he said he asked once upon a time that of roselle and roselle says you're the commissioner you have to root for the team that's losing because you want the game to be close and how are you watching georgia alabama on on a night like that yeah i was in the end zone so because of all we had around with um a former president trump and security and moving around i came in i stayed in the end zone because you have this great view of line play and receivers breaking so the first two touchdowns for alabama were right in front of me and there are a couple of pictures people sent where my arms are crossed my face is a motionless you want a good game but you're when you're in these conference versus conference games i've been at oxford mississippi earlier for kentucky uh at old miss and you're just like almost anesthetized to it you want you want things to go right you want a competitive game you want great plays and you want a lot of people to watch which we obviously had on saturday right and then just seeing all the the end to end action and um in that environment that that's that's how you draw it up right in the sec offices i'd imagine yeah some people will point the finger and say we do draw things up that's what happens on the field and highly talented people in just an electric environment performing at the highest level uh against another team that's performing at their highest level that that's really what you cheer for is that kind of competition and i think that's why young people and even coaches want to be a part of the southeastern conference because they know the level of challenge that's there and that's what a competitor i think truly desires do you uh okay let's get into saben here uh in his role now uh as media member but there was a conversation when he retired how he wanted to inform those in power about issues and his opinions on it and what things can be done to fix things do you have conversations with him like that and if so what what uh what you're willing to share on that front yeah um and i think nick would be comfortable with this so first when when his retirement was announced i was on the road i waited a few days i called him on a saturday morning um the first thing i asked is hey you know i know you don't text much and he corrected that to say he does text a little so i think it's okay to send them text messages it's never punctuated um i just said hey you know congratulations on a great career and we talked a little bit about his decision making and one of the things he said that day is what you're you're repeating and that is i think given the current environment i have an opportunity to provide information and influence not being the coach at alabama in other words people interpret his perspective as the coach trying to advance to advance his agenda and i give him credit for that thought and uh we certainly have had conversations he stopped by to see me and we talked about when he's made a couple of trips to washington dc uh what are my perspectives i've asked him for what things are really like now i think there's a little bit more freedom to just ask what it's like to be in the crucible of coaching and a head coach in the southeastern conference in fact one of the things i never anticipated he and i were on a video conference talking about um a visit in washington dc had and i'm the one who had to say look i have a schedule i have a dinner and 30 minutes i have to leave i usually it was yes it's him last 20 years he was saying i'm done it's time to go but i think he's been a great addition to college game day um he was wonderful at our sec media days and wanted to do more and there's a depth of understanding about the game that even sophisticated fans don't quite understand when you experience this football perspective football background football depth that nick possesses now uh greg sankey here on the rich isin show the commissioner of the sec listen i know what i'm about to ask you is not your conference but it is our sport here but what happened at unlv where the quarterback says i'm leaving i'm red shirting because i didn't get the money i was promised and goes into the transfer portal this this is new and i'm wondering how that piece of news hit you greg sankey it is another indication without commenting on that circumstance because i think i think there are media reports and then there's what actually happened and i don't know the details but let's just back up and i've probably said this before you think rich about the layering of issues we have we have post-covid eligibility where people have been around longer we have litigation we have waivers we have state attorney generals state legislators legislatures governors with different executive orders or laws or lawsuits we have a four-game transfer policy like our four-game red shirt policy that was adopted i think right before covid you can play four games not use your year that creates another one of these kind of points of should i go forward with my commitment or should i step aside you've seen that over time it clearly is complicated by these reports around finances and what we are working on like every hour of every day is can we settle the lawsuits that provide a framework for how college sports move forward moves forward that that's in the hands of the court uh we'll prepare for that opportunity um if that's not successful we'll have to have probably plans b c and d i do think what's really important from a southeastern conference perspective is we should be in control of our decision making we shouldn't be farming that out to some third party or some other entity and and i think we collaborate well with our colleague conferences but we shouldn't be looking for some magic solution from outside the influence area of college sports now yeah and the perfect way to you know for me to go where i've been thinking and have mentioned to you is yes figuring out what's good for the sec within the sec you have your member schools that have many of them if not all most if not all the same issues amongst all these other aspects of the business that you just listed off and then you have a big 10 working group correct you and tony petite of a working group i'm wondering are are you talking about the same exact stuff with him we're careful yeah we're careful because we do have responsibilities from a legal standpoint where you can't just have a free-flowing conversation about everything the big 10 and the acc and the big 12 in the mountain west and and the mid-american conference they all have to make decisions within their context and we're very careful about accessing the right legal guidance but we announced back in february the formation of an advisory group because we are walking into or towards a new model at that time discussions about whether we would settle or not there's been an agreement around settlement again will the court authorize that to move forward there are parts of that settlement that we can work on collectively one of the lessons for me over what is now a long career is the really big problems in this world are not resolved in big rooms filled with people you have to refine your thinking for no other reason than trying to refine our thinking and bring people into that conversation that's why that's why we formed the advisory group i think that's healthy that's not a threat i recognize people can perceive it that way but we need some deep in-depth thought on a small group of people and it can populate itself outward and others outside of our group may have ideas that help can help guide us forward i think that's very healthy and i think that's a leadership responsibility that we have well if i'm not mistaken the working group was formed based on a frustrating experience you had in one of the aforementioned big rooms with a lot of people if i'm not mistaken i heard that story if at one of your press conferences can you give me that story here so it can inform the way i i ask my next couple of questions here commissioner well there are probably a couple of experiences um you can probably go on social media and find out there are those who don't think i'm the smartest guy out there so sometimes it takes repetition for me to learn right let's just acknowledge that but you know one of the moments was i was a co-chair of the transformation committee had a really effective leader in julie kromer who was the athletics director at ohio university and a few months in you know the kind of the nca way of populating committees is everybody has an opinion everybody has a chance and it was a smaller group but i kind of came to the point where you're only going to get so much out of these these working groups at some point similarly situated entities are going to have to have discussions and provide leadership for the future that was one of those circumstances fast forward to maybe june of of that experience so we're about six months in and as we populated some ideas at an nca council meeting which is where all 32 conferences are represented the level of pushback on what would be modern concepts was enormously frustrating and you know there's no sense in making like my list of complaints i have to turn the page and work forward and part of refining and working with the big 10 appropriately is to see can we populate some ideas um and candidly i think it's been helpful to generate conversation between our presidents and our athletics directors do that carefully do that cautiously and and hopefully help lead and guide some others but take their input at the same time well i mean taking all of what we've just discussed in and how you know you have realized i've got my member schools within the sec i need to figure out what's good for the sec and this is the way i'm going to operate here and then you've got a working group with the big 10 uh not to put any words in commissioner petite's mouth but i'm assuming if there was a venn diagram of his concerns and your concerns there it might be two circles on top of each other and then we find other members in other conferences who have similar aspects of their programs and now suddenly instead of you just figuring it out within the sec you've got like-minded individuals in a smaller room to figure this thing out and then that group then names a commissioner for everything that's the way it seems honestly like that seems to be the answer because you're the federal government doesn't seem to be um attuned to fix um this issue right now and i know there's a court case and everything but why is that not a reasonable level of expectation for the future let's go let's go back to maybe well we first met at a super bowl yes you may recall i do not have made an impression on you but you made an impression on me that was pre-covid right that was like ancient it was in atlanta and you were pointing out all the great sec players that are on the field and i pointed out the name of the quarterback of the patriots and what conference he attended and and uh i remember this conversation sir i will i verify the conversation email um danny devito is in there really narrow down the list it was an interesting experience nonetheless um at some point you asked me a question about like a commissioner over at all let's fast forward to covid the notion that that format that one and people call it a czar so i give you credit for calling commissioner would dictate policy that plays out equally across the country given the diversity that's present in higher education i don't think it's consistent with reality i think it's right to ask the question but you have to think about people ceding authority to a centralized entity so let's go back to a reference i made a moment ago where state attorneys general or state legislatures or governors are saying you can or cannot do this under this centralized nca structure that difficulty would exist in this centralized commissioner model that's why we've we've attempted to be careful in our thinking that it is an advisory group it can populate ideas we don't have authority because we have to go back through a process to make those decisions whether it's in our conferences individually perhaps we can bring some states into that conversation perhaps it's appropriate for a national conversation it's just a really difficult proposition and that's where i go back earlier as well to say our conference needs to make sure that we take responsibility for decision making in a really important time of change acknowledge decisions that haven't been made we have to make a set of decisions in a matter of months that represent the old college athletics model decades of change and uh we accept that responsibility and we have to be after that work every day see my concern here greg sankey couple minutes left with the sec commissioner my concern here is that if we're waiting for the tipping point of enough people saying the status quo and the headaches of the status quo are are still doable enough for me to deal with to not accede control to a new central authority that i mean we we might be waiting years until there's enough of a tipping point that there's enough schools and institutions of higher learning that are just figuring out their way through this crazy ever-changing world uh in which there could be a a again a a legal settlement that requires an incredible amount of money including one of your member schools having a talent fee apparently being added to some tickets for future ticket sales that we're waiting for the tipping point here is that what you're saying we need to get enough member schools to say the status quo is too much of a headache let's figure out who the authority is and who's in this boat under this new authority and let's accede control is that essentially what i'm picking up from you there let's acknowledge there's a lot there okay so let me take parts of it into smaller chunks that we can consume one is tipping point the tipping point issue in my view and then the communications to me were beyond the tipping point and rich i think one of the difficulties whether it's a point of criticism or not is the overall college athletic system for decades was perceived to work well not perfectly never was well you've gone through a lot of change and the economic change creates a set of pressures there's been litigation hard to say wow we're graduating at a higher level young people are being educated they're being provided opportunities and everything's wrong so i do think you had to come to a tipping point now does the ability to make decisions in the current environment mandate that all has to be done in a centralized way because what's at the basis of the lawsuits it's antitrust and antitrust doesn't just evaporate because you there's going to be a czar a commissar a commissioner whatever the label might be for this this big entity that's reality so i go back to say now i think we're past the tipping point we're going to be in this decision making process obviously settlements front and center from a legal standpoint that represents relatively speaking decades of change being made in a matter of months and i do think that's that's set now the desire is to do that collectively in a legally defensible way that sustains broad-based college athletics we also have to have our eyes wide open to the financial pressures that would come with this economic change when do you expect this uh ruling to hit where now you're going to actually see something in on a piece of paper and how everybody's going to have to divvy up revenue here and that one's not up to me so i am going to avoid judicial predictions that's why you are where you are come on why don't you just be a commissioner of a whole new thing commissioner come on why don't you you're not interested in that sort of thing deep down i read yesterday that one of these outside ideas just wants to buy me out so i don't know how to interpret that buy you out what does that mean like where i don't know i don't know everybody has their ideas so i i do think let me go back i lead a 90 plus year organization and two weeks ago i shared with our presidents and chancellors i feel that weight every day every day for the last 10 football season since june of 2015 i watched my predecessors mike slive and roy kramer carry that weight i think our fans expect us to solve our problems i think our fans expect us to solve our problems i think our fans expect to see georgia and alabama play to alabama and tennessee play we've got missouri at a&m and a ranked matchup this week at oklahoma was it all over we have new matchups we have old matchups we have an incredible regional population and a national following that expects us a 90 plus year old organization to be figuring things out with our colleagues but not to just walk away from that history well you know you also know you just explain why you're uniquely qualified to run a new entity that might be a better way of doing things nationally commissioner right i appreciate that i would ask if that new role would allow me to have those friday nights to come up with chris burnham's logan no no no no no i know and i listen i know it's your life and it's your family life and it's your world it just is something that just disappears to be more unwieldy every day and it just seems to be and thankfully we do get to lose ourselves in such a game in such a moment like say georgia alabama and and it does remind us of why we all want it to work in a way that does seem to be fair and equitable to everybody where where kids who are and again you've spoken so eloquently on the subject matter it's not just about paying kids it's about giving kids what they've they've been told they're going to get and there's no there's no there's no reinforcement of these things that's unified or or or is held you know i know we're probably long no but i'm sorry that i haven't talked about which is real and i i fully respect our political realities in this country right now there's a divide it's hard for bipartisan or really nonpartisan work to be completed but when you think about the lack of consumer protection and let's make the student-athlete the consumer in this name image and likeness world the lack of protection for them i would argue that the stories that you've identified today and maybe a few here and there are but the tip of the iceberg because there's no transparency there's no oversight this is done on a state-by-state basis the young people on our teams ask us to help make sure that when they're across the line of scrimmage for an opponent they just want to be on equal footing for what the the structure is going to be and that's that's a big ass that's not something that there's an easy button for that's where hey can congress help tough time to do that can the settlement make us help us progress that that's where we are can our states help us in a better way so rather than having 50 state laws that young people have to figure out can they also provide the sort of protections for young people and help us train them for life i am concerned and this is maybe my final observation here that somebody who lives this name image and like this life from 19 to 22 and then has to go into the job market that entry level moment and that first job of their career is going to be very different from somebody experiencing that 10 or 20 years ago no complaints we just need to have our eyes open to the big picture of what's happening around us in this current environment commissioner i always appreciate our time i love our chats they're so thought-provoking and um and i think my only disappointment is i thought we were gonna solve this whole thing in 20 minutes so there were no easy buttons in life wow that sound like that sounds like a t-shirt i like that we might might take that commissioner thanks for the time greatly appreciate it uh uh onto the next and i hope uh we do chat soon thanks again absolutely thank you rich how great that right back at you the commissioner of the southeastern conference greg sankey thought we were going to solve it but there you have it man all right uh like i said you know where i think this needs to be headed it needs to be headed in a spot where the sec and the big 10 and with all due respect to any other conference that might not get in the boat we'll put you in a different um league and let's have you elevated and others relegated that simple but i thought that was a fascinating thing that he said the issue is getting some people to accede their authority to a new central commissioner there's some who were like i'm not doing that and that's when i asked when's the tipping point when is the tipping point where somebody who's thinking i'm not doing that says oh god it's much more of a headache than the stat to maintain a status quo he says we've we've reached it and passed that tipping point all right when we come back antonio pierce has spoken and the way it reads on the uh on the transcript makes me feel like this is a hell of a soundbite uh extravaganza we're about to play for everybody next here on this wednesday edition let's talk about game time tickets people we've been talking about it rolling so we appreciate everybody being out there and um we've doubled our number of podcasts and jackson's so um before we go uh we've been talking about devante adams all day by the way get used to it all month until this guy gets traded as we all expect him to be traded antonio pierce asked today about all this business hit it have you communicated with drante and um where is the relationship uh with you and me to talk often what was have you talked to him since all of this i believe that between me and devante are you concerned at all but there's been a distraction no no because we're focused on denver given all the reports that are out there about devante how are you able to focus simply on the broncos coming up i've been doing it you talking about me personally and then how do you oh because i mean it starts with me because that's my only focus i get paid here to get ready each and every week for the opponent um i don't blink i don't flinch i don't know i've said it before like i've been through enough of my life with adversity and stuff that it doesn't bother me i just move forward the next obstacle in front is the denver broncos and that's what i presented to my team and that's what they're doing right now in the meeting we're about to go out to practice and do it versus the broncos get the sense that they absorb that message 100 okay all right hey listen we we thought they were gonna come back from baltimore and beat up the panthers and andy dalton had other thoughts and then we thought they would without devante and max crosby and others get uh curb stomped by the browns and they beat him so who knows never know but i i would just counsel again i always give two unsolicited unsolicited sense if if he's gonna view devante is just the latest thing to address and move on that one could leave a bit of a mark and i do hope that whatever they do talk about and communicate it can bury whatever hatchet might exist it needs to be buried i don't know seems like there's something because i'll tell you what boiling you know our our our show began with the the top five best locations for devante adams and we had our fun with you know it's your team we only needed number five that's the only one that met i know i put but then i did come up with the top five and i put the cowboys there in all honesty for antonio pierce and for the raiders the best spot for devante adams is las vegas yeah for sure so stay tuned tom pelissaro will be here tomorrow i'll chime in every now and then from london we're wrapping it up on the roku channel in a moment
