Franklin, Lakeson! Catch! Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. True Breeze, five other guys went. Bo was kind of viewed wrongly.
When Sean Payton told me I really wanted Bo Nick's next two were above all these other guys, like, I believe that. Today's guests: NFL on Fox analyst Mark Sanchez, Phil Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham, comedian Adam Ray, and now. It's rich i said. It's the Rich Hisen Show live on the Roku Sports Channel, live on the Infinity Sports Network, Odyssey. Sirius XM and more.
We say hello to all of you out there. We're four wide today with two in-studio guests. Those zooming in, Mark Sanchez of Fox Sports, formerly of USC, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles. Mark and I have your cheese fries, one of our longest standing drops. Mike, I didn't expect you to have that.
We have an 11-year-old drops. I want you to have my cheese fries. All right, that's very good. 11-year-old drop here on the pro. He's first up on the show, and then Michael Irvin will be second.
We're going to go down the old deep dive. Of the new Netflix documentary that you guys went to the premiere of a couple of weeks ago. Um and uh and of course Michael's the one who had Jerry Jones on his show a couple weeks ago that with the soundbite that pays. uh of him saying that um Um Micah's agent told the Cowboys to take the offer that apparently he had put on the table for Micah where the sun doesn't shine and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yada, yada, yada.
He's still in sign. And it's a week until football gets played for the Cowboys and the Eagles.
So, Micah is going to be front and center of a conversation starting hour number two of the program. American Kings, the biography of the quarterback. Seth Wickersham is going to come in the studio here. Seth is the one who broke the news that the Chicago Bears and Um And their staff didn't tell Caleb Williams how to watch film. That's in this book.
So Seth's going to join us in the middle of hour number two. And then Adam Ray, one of our favorites, is going to be showing back up here in studio in hour number three as himself, not Dr. Phil. He will be here. And it's a fun show.
You at 844-204-Rich, number to dial. Good to see you over there, Christopher Brockman. How are you, sir? Rich, I'm excellent. How are you, friend?
I am doing well. DJ Mikey D isn't D is nuts. Good to see you. Good to see you. You have nothing to say?
Good morning, Rich. I'm just pointed. We're on a radio show. I can tell our audio executive can't see you waiting. You know, it was just like it gave you a little who are driving around in their cars.
I can't hear the wave. You know, it was like, come on. It's all good. You know, I had to break out this uh Cowboys-inspired shirt of Aikman Smith, Irvin, and Jimmy Johnson today. That was the day, the night that Jimmy went into the Ring of Honor, finally, right?
And the moment that he screamed out, how about the Compass? Yeah. I kind of felt that way after my first sports center in 22 years a week and a half ago. I appreciate again Brian Curtis, who wrote a he was embedded with me for that sports center a couple Mondays ago, and he just wrote a feature about it in the ringer. Appreciated that.
That's so good. That deep dive, as they say in the business, that dropped today. In a week's time, the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles will be playing for our viewing pleasure on NBC to kick off the 2025 season one week from tonight. One week from today, I will be conducting this show from, I can't believe I'm saying these words, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Yeah, man.
I can't believe it either. You'll be where you guys are. Unfortunately, here. I will be in Brazil. Once again, let me just ask one last time.
Are you sure we're not going to? I'm positive. I'm absolutely positive. We had to ask. I had to ask.
Since I would be the one in charge of the plane flights and the accommodation. Yeah, we should book travel if we're going to have to. You're not coming. You're not going. I'm going.
Just have to make sure.
So, but one week from today, I will be sitting in Brazil. That's awesome. I'll be closer to Antarctica than you one week from today.
So the reason why I bring this up is a very frozen place also exists for the Dallas Cowboys. And Micah Parsons. And one week from tonight, we're going to get an answer to a question that's still quite burning. Is he going to be playing? And there's a report that's out there right now that Micah is.
Taking a um A shot here. at uh delaying the process here. By that I mean He has options. Not showing, showing. Playing for 24 million, not playing for 24 million, getting on the plane next Wednesday or not.
There's the back issue that apparently he has. Ooh, my back. There's a back issue apparently that he has. Bacchiotomy. That's not what I'm joking about.
report out there that he's seeking a second opinion on his back. Which is a great way to say, oh, my back. The MRI that you say is clean. I don't know. I need to see a doctor.
Is there can you look it up in uh maybe Yelp It in the um in the Metroplex area? Can you Google to see if is there a a back doctor, Dr. Vincent Boom bots. Hey, Vinny. Let's see.
I don't know. Mike, do you know who Dr. Vinny Boombats is currently? He's a long lost cousin that used to take care of us. My parents would take care of him.
I thought his practice was in Long Island. Actually, that's an old school Rodney Danger field. Yes, Dr. Vinny Boombat. Daddy Vinny Boombats.
I'm not saying that Micah doesn't have a back injury, but. But what are you doing? That's one way of saying, hey, don't blame me for not playing. It's not a contractual impasse, it's an impasse between these two discs in my back. I'm hurting.
Listen, back pain is no joke, I know. And it's also something that you can't really measure either, is it? Are you going to tell me how bad I'm hurting? And they could say, oh, this MRI doesn't show any inflammation, sir. The only thing that may be inflamed is our relationship.
I don't know, man. I don't know. All I know is I've never seen anything like this in my 20-something years of. You know how I handle all of these situations. And I was right about Trey Hendrickson.
who we're going to hear from later on the program. And I was right. About Terry McLaurin. I was right about TJ Watt. I was right about all of them.
But this is going to, don't worry, it's all going to work out. This one, I kind of don't really know. You were pretty solid on your own. And I was solid as saying that it would happen. But now?
Because, you know, I mean, what are you going to do here? You're going to really go into the season without. Micah Parsons? It's not smart. Or Micah happy or Micah fine with his back.
I I don't know. Because Jerry has a certain sensibility of. characterizing this And because he told Stephen A. Smith, we always look at this as Jerry the owner is calling his employee into the office. the taunt contract and cut the middleman and the agent out.
But as he pointed out to Stephen A. Smith, he's the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. He just also happens to sign the checks.
So if he's the general manager talking to a player, isn't that... Copacinic? Welcome. An agent still has to be part of the process. Unless I guess the player represents himself, like Bobby Wagner, didn't Richard Sherman do a deal of his own?
Correct.
So Micah Asking the agent to come in is viewed as a provocative act for whatever reason. And Jerry's not going to budge. And Mike is not going to budge, I guess.
So later on, when Michael Irvin joins this program, I'm going to nominate him to be the one to do it. Oh, please, yes. Very. I nominated Stephen Jones the other day, and I got some people who. Are potentially more in the know of what's going on and the boots on the ground and the star in the metroplex saying.
Number of times that Stephen wants to do something or thinks something should be done, but You know. It's still one man's call. Daddy says no.
Well, I mean. And again, I've spoken to Steven multiple times before. He refers to... His dad is Jerry. In conversations.
In conversations. And You know, Stephen will run the show fully one day. And I think he's excellent, by the way. Um that said I was told, yeah, I don't think he's going to be the one to step in.
So it's got to be Michael. It's got to be someone from outside, if you will, this. Dispute Because it is a dispute. Can I bring something up that I haven't read? Sure, go ahead, Marn.
My only person, and I guess this is more so for Cowboys fans, they're a little like questioning why Jerry went on Stephen A's show when you consider that, like, this man is your biggest public detractor. This is the man who frequently just craps upon the fan base that you love, claim to love so much. It's like, of all people that you go to, you go to the one guy. Who makes his bones by constantly being like Mike Del Tuvo and putting you and this organization down? Like, that was just weird to me for some reason.
Well, can I offer a couple of. Thoughts and pushback on that. That's why I'm coming to you. You talked me off the ledge. You have met Stephen A.
Smith, have you not? I once here in the studio, right?
Okay. Did you leave with the impression of like, maybe you wanna Break a little bread with the guy. Yeah, I want to kick it with him.
Okay, right. But I think most people would would would say that, even if they like roll their eyes at first take. That's number one. Number two, I do believe the two of them are actual friends. And in the same way that Jerry just wants his name talked about, that everybody says that, who's the one who talks about the name either way?
Mm-hmm. Not everybody Takes somebody's opinion of them. from their public platforms. And all the criticisms, whether you feel they're fair or not, or cheap shots or not. Not everybody bans that person from their stadium.
I'm sorry. It's Fox's decision not to let Dave Portnoy out of it. Excuse me. There'll be a fourth tomorrow. Come on, man.
For the record. But I'm being serious, though. Right? Not everyone is like, I will not talk to you. I will not.
Most people on your program. Most people on your own. But if Jerry is about to spell my name right. Who spells their name right more than anybody else? And I I And I think Jerry can parse the two and I think they are tight actually.
Okay. Oh, you know that, huh? Yeah. Okay. Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I mean, I've said for years he's a Causa Cowboy fan. I will offer pushback on that, significant pushback on that. He's not a classic cowboy fan. Stephen Makesh. God, I love him.
Cooper loves it. Susie loves it. When the Cowboys lose, we just pop the phone on just to see what he's going to say. That's my point. Just prove my point.
No, but again, though, Steven's. He's got a massive platform. Jerry, I think. you know Uh and him are tight. And and again, not everybody.
Acts the way. that Ohio State acted with Dave Portnoy. I'm so sorry. I keep getting it wrong. Yeah.
844-204-Rich is the number to dial here on the program. This guy. What's this guy? What? This guy.
Oh, I don't care if I'm never. If I never said that.
Well, you're not getting invited by the banner. I'm never banned. Yeah, you might be banned. Really? Yeah.
You think so? If I showed up. What do you think? What place would Rich have an easier time? You gay has been on the show.
Not since he started losing to us. Repeatedly. See there, there. It might be the garden. I yeah, it's a lot of days, right?
I've seen the signs. Does the horseshoe have facial recognition like all the Dolan um does it have bar stool recognition?
Well y yeah a little bit. It's a big platform, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
What? Nothing. Oh, thank you. No, I'm just talking about something that, again, it's Petty Norton over here. It's not.
It's not. This whole thing's going to go away when Toe meets Ball. Gus and Joel Clatt do their thing. Gus. Oh yeah.
That's gonna be great. That's gonna be great. That's gonna be great. Will they keep a bar stool on the set empty?
Sort of.
Sort of the way that Jerry Glanville used to leave tickets for Elvis. Will they just leave an empty seat for Fortnite? I think they should do that. Right.
Next to urban.
Next to Urban.
Next to Urban.
Right.
It's a good idea. Yeah. You gotta move on. You gotta move on. I don't know about that.
There's a show tomorrow. There's a show tomorrow. There'll be a show tomorrow. And two days after that. No, no, no.
But after that, it's over. Of course it's over. This is fine. Until Portner shows up in other Big Ten facilities and suddenly be like, wait a minute.
So whose decision? This is never going to be over, Chris. I'll be paying attention. Us Michigan folk will be paying attention. Oh, we know.
Oh, yeah. We know. Oh, yeah. I can feel it. This story brought to you by Charmin.
So.
Soft charm's not as soft as it used to be. Oh gosh, now it has to take a break. That is not true, Michael Kennedy. I bought a bad Charmin back. It wasn't good.
It wasn't good. Speaking of chafing, I am at the turn of conversation. We keep it real here, Ross. I'm sorry, I'm not sure. You know, you were on music?
Let's go. I can see Mark Sanchez has already zoomed in. He's probably like, I can't believe I'm joining this show. Mark Sanchez of Fox Sports will be joining us next to set the table of the National Football League season that begins one week from tonight. Cooper Eisen, my 14-year-old.
Son, youngest son loves alternate jerseys. He loves alternate jerseys because he likes seeing the different ones, but he loves showing them to me because he knows. I'm old school and I hate most of them. And he says to me today as I'm getting ready to leave. For work, he goes, Dad, there's a whole bunch of rivalry uniforms from the NFL.
Can you take, like, you want to see them? With a smile on his face. And I said, No, I'm sure I'll see them at work. Oh, you just denied your son the opportunity? I believe I was late.
I'm a professional. And plus, the last thing, he's going to school. I'm like, you know, get off your screen. You know, like let's focus. Wow.
But this is parenting 101, Chris. You only got a five-year-old home, but we're delaying the inevitable of me being pissed off. What am I looking at here? AFC East, what are these called? These are called rivalries.
So they're going to wear them against. They're rivals? Each other, I guess. Dolphins first up. What are we looking at?
Okay, whatever. I like that. That's it. Why? Why?
I like them. What do you mean? That's cool looking, Rich.
So you hate Oregon and all the crazy cool uniforms that they do over the years? I just like. I mean, Dan Marino wouldn't wear this. That's not the Jets. It's not the Jets.
That's not the Jets. That's not the Jets. What is that?
Well, what the Jets have done forever has not worked.
So, maybe it's good. Good idea.
Sorry, I know Mark is listening. The Patriots, that looks like the Colts. You look like the Indianapolis Colts. You might as well complain about the PSI and footballs. Oh, we can start a fake controversy.
Cool. And scandal. Oh, it's a northeast. And the bills look like snow. It's cool.
It's cool. Rich, just be cool. My bad. You know what I mean? What do we got here?
Carl, are you? Did they not come back from the laundry? Is that what it is? Oh, is that what? The haboob?
Saying. Is that the leftover from the Haboob? Oh, the Rams are called. Oh, I can't wait to buy that one for K. That was not bad.
That's sick. That's what I mean. Back on the Rich Eisen Show Radio Network, Fox Sports, NFL analyst and longtime quarterback. Uh, in college at USC and then the JETS and so many other teams. Good to see you, Mark.
How are you, sir? Good to see you. I'm fine. I'm doing great. I happen to like those uniforms.
Rich? Mark, come on, man. Hold on, put the jet one up. Put the jet one up. Mark, what?
Mark, come on. We'd have beat Pittsburgh if we were wearing that. Ah, come on, no. We wouldn't have started so damn slow. He knows.
Is that really? Really? Is that? I don't know, man. I prefer like the old school ones.
I'd rather you look like Namath. You know, back in the day, I love the throwback ones. Like, I want to see Bo Nicks wear the old school John Elway. The Broncos one, the brown and yellow, those were terrible. No, no, no.
With the orange, like the orange crush. I want to go old school. I want marine, I want the merino stuff on Tua, not whatever the heck that is. That looks like something like the Marlins would wear on a Saturday against the Padre. Yeah, or the Podros.
You know what I mean? City Connect. Like, what are we doing? Rich, you're giving get off my lawn right now. No, I know.
I was just going to say that. I was just going to say that. No, I'm being honest because I know there are a bunch of hardworking men and women at 345 Park Avenue who work their tails off on this sort of thing, and I'm carping on it right now or crapping on it. But that's just, that's me, man. Remember the color rush?
And the Bucks again? I did a Thursday night game, Bucks versus Bucks versus the Rams. The Rams are in the all-yellow. It was ketchup versus Mustard. God bless my dad.
May he rest in peace. He was colorblind. He couldn't tell who was who. Wow. I'm serious.
Come on, Red. Mark, it's the truth. He's calling me up because I didn't know who was who. He also was Not a sports fan, but anyway, I digress. Good to see you, Mark.
Jumping and speaking of the Denver Broncos, if I'm not mistaken, your first game week one for Foxes, you've got Cam Ward and the Titans in his first career start. in Denver and I'll tell you Mark Throughout the entire summer training camp season, I would ask information men and women when they come on this program, give me the team that everybody's talking about when they're texting you from other teams about what you know and the buzz about certain teams that are going to be better than anybody might be talking about. It's the Denver Broncos. That bandwagon is jacked and full. Mark.
I know. I think some of that is from the head coach. You know, Coach Payton did a couple of interviews this offseason and really believes in this group. And he's kind of leaned into that mentality of, hey, I'm not. Pulling any punches here.
I trust this group. We signed Sertan for a reason. Our rookie quarterback got us to the playoffs. We're going to do it again. You know, I love the running back room.
We got J.K. Dobbins. We haven't seen a ton of him in the preseason.
So hopefully, that's a big boost for him in the run game. And then, you know, on offense as well, Evan Ingram, with the acquisition of him, you barely see him. He only had like one catch in the preseason, but apparently, he's going to be. One of the feature players.
So I think he's excited about that. I think anytime you get a team with, I think it's like 39 returning starters or roster players. That's a lot. 39 to 53 is pretty good turnaround. And almost, I think it's like 15 of 16 offensive and defensive linemen are back on the team.
that continuity means a lot.
So I think that's what's got them feeling. uh that energy and and that vibe in denver that hey this is a team That might make a little run here at the division. And after watching the way things went down with the Chiefs later in the year last year. They're thinking, hey, Rashi Rice is gone for a few games. Man, we might get our shot here and we got to take advantage of it.
We're basically in our window is kind of the message that. Sean Payton is sending to his guys and publicly.
So it's a couple of interesting storylines without giving away everything in broadcasts. I got my notes going already, but yeah, but you know. The first round draft pick making his first start against a really tough defensive unit. Probably one of the top five defenses in the league, at least projected, could be number one. But going against Sertan and Benito and Zach Allen and then Advance Joseph defense.
I mean, that's a hell of a way to start a career on the road in Mile High. I mean, that's serious. And then, you know, for Bo Nicks, being the first-round quarterback. Taking your team to the playoffs after a decade drought of playoff appearances and now the sophomore year.
Well, what can you do next? You're only as good as this next game. It's the ultimate meritocracy here in the NFL.
So What do you got next? And you're no longer a rookie.
So show me that you're the franchise guy and last year wasn't just a fluke.
So there's plenty going into this game. I'm excited to call it.
Well, if I'm not mistaken, Mark Sanchez, you started your career on the road, right? Your first career game was in Houston. In Houston. Correct.
So what do you think is going to go through Cam Ward's. veins that was going through yours on that let me get the date right um September 13th, 2009. 2009. Um You know, I, the funny story about that game is I got so excited pregame. My high school coach was there.
My dad was there on the sidelines. And then Joe Namath. It was right next to him. Oh, baby.
So I'm walking out for pregame warm-ups. And I'm just like, oh my God. two of my heroes and then the hero for the Neo Jets. of all time are just standing there hanging out. And so I go over and talk to him.
Then I go through my warm-up routine and I go to get dressed. I didn't even taint my ankles. I forgot. I just didn't even think about it. And I've tainted my ankles for every game since I was a little guy.
I just didn't even think about it. Went out and played the game. Uh we won. And I got to throw my first touchdown pass to Chauncey Stuckey. And I guess the rest was history.
Rex was upset that I did throw the interception because it ruined the shutout. That was his first comment after the game. I love it. He said, I could have had a shutout in my first game. I was like, I think we won.
I think we're good. But okay, personal stats noted. Yep.
So it was just. It's a blur and for those young guys. the best he can put the blinders on uh almost like a uh Like one of those prized racehorses, those thoroughbreds, you know, they put the blinders on. They get in there, you know, from the paddock. To their little lane, and don't worry about anything else.
Don't look to the left, don't look to the right, trust your feet, trust your eyes. And to the best of your ability, try and have fun. I know it's a chaotic environment. At the end, you'll look back and kind of take a breath. And say, man, that was a real rush.
What a thrill. What an enjoyable experience for me, my family, everybody that I know that helped me get here. I think he'll get there at some point. But in the moment, it's really hard to look back at that. And I think You know, the onus is on Brian Callahan, the head coach and coordinator.
Give him some breather place. Let him stack a couple completions early in the game.
Some easy ones, just a quick little flat route, a slant route, something on the move. A wide receiver screen, tight end screen. Just to kind of get a breath, you know, some of those they call them breather plays because you know where the ball is going. The quarterback doesn't have to think too much. And the less he's going to have to drop back, get to his third or fourth read, make a move in the pocket and throw an accurate ball with a guy draped all over somebody, the better he's going to be in his first start.
Eventually, he's going to have to do it more and more, and he might have to do it to win the game. but you probably don't want to major in that in his first start but i think uh I think they'll be up for the challenge. Yeah, I mean, and again, um. Doing it in Tennessee is one thing. You did it in New York.
I did not know. It's just like a little different. There's Joe Namath. Do you mean the guy that everybody in the fan base keeps talking about because nobody's done anything pretty much at the position? of significance like that since.
You know, uh on the on the other uh side of things for the Giants, I'm wondering. You know.
Well advice for Jackson Dart, who is not going to get the week one start. And I don't know how much preseason action you saw of him, Mark, but he does seem to have this swagger. And I kind of understand why the Giants are like, let's protect the swagger when we're starting at Washington, at Dallas, home for Kansas City, home for the Chargers with a. A trip to Philadelphia after a trip to Denver before Philadelphia comes to us. Like that, I just gave you.
Almost half of the Giants Schedule right there. I kind of understand why the Giants are doing it. I give you the floor on that subject matter.
Well, I think when it comes to starting a rookie. I think part of it is the player and the other important Factor is the team. Is the team ready to support a young player like this? That we will inevitably have to win games in spite of him because he's going to turn the ball over, he's going to make mistakes. Can we do it with the supporting cast around him?
For the Giants at this point, I'd say their defense is. pretty nails i love especially their first and second level with All the guys, they got Russian up front. And Dexter Lawrence and Burns, you know, they got Thibodeau, they got everything you want. As a pass rushing group, and then at the backer level, Okerake, I love what he's done over there coming over from Indy and really making a name for himself. I love their defense, their back end solid.
So they're good. On offense, I just don't know if they're ready to support. Taxon Dart as a rookie. The entirety of a season, the entirety of a game. I think he'll get some plays.
I think they'll have some stuff designed for him. Maybe some quarterback design runs, maybe some of the RPO game. But I don't see. that team as prepared for you know, a rookie to take that. Base of the franchise role starting day one, the way the Jets were positioned, maybe in 2009.
They had to win some games because, in spite of me, because I wasn't playing well my rookie year, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. We ended up making the playoffs late. But and then we we have a pretty good little playoff run, and my numbers improved, my confidence improved. But it was a process to get there. And there were some dark days in the facility.
And so I don't know if this team is quite equipped for that. the way we were in 2009. And that's no knock on. The player on Jackson Dart, it's just, I don't know if that team's ready for all that. I think another year, a couple reps, watching a pro like Russell Wilson.
Do it for an entire year. if you can do that and withstand that and the coach has a long enough leash Then I think that's the best situation for a young quarterback. Mark Sanchez here on The Rich Eisen Show. I've got the author Seth Wickersham coming in studio next hour in his book. uh on quarterbacks revealed Um that Caleb Williams last year did not get any heads up or Too much.
Guidance from the coaching staff on how to watch film or what film to watch. And I thought to myself, and there's Tyson Bajant in the room as well, who's We all know hasn't got a lot of time in the league. And I'll be honest with you, Mark, I thought of the hard knocks moment. Uh involving you. Um Back in the day with the Jets, if I'm not mistaken, was it Brunel who basically told you you need a binder?
You know what I mean? Like, you got to write notes, right? It was. Kevin O'Connell, we brought in Ritz Gannon. My rookie year, just to go through your process through the week.
What do you do on Monday? What do you do on Tuesday? How do you work out? How do you eat? How do you take notes?
We would watch tape. He would throw it up on the screen and say, what are you looking at? And I'm like The defense? Yeah, what about it?
Well, what about it? Um right.
Well, he goes, well, what's the front? It's an over.
Okay, so are you making it? A grouping of over fronts that you're going to see? Because I would if I were you. Cause what else are you going to get? I said, Well, I don't know.
He goes, Well, if you see over, you're probably going to see an under. You might see a bear. You might see a jam. You might see. And I was just like, whoa.
Okay, yeah, let's go. Boom. And we started categorizing fronts. And then he said, when you walk up to a line of scrimmage, what are you looking at? I said, well, you got to see the front first, where the backers are, peek the corners, and then I got to keep my eyes on the safeties.
He's like, great, three by one, the backside safety is going to tell you the story. You better watch him all the time, one eye on him almost all the time. And then the premier players, you got to keep another eye on him. You better have eight eyes, you know. And so he was.
Reminding me. of what this position really demands. Kim, Brunel, O'Connell. And I was blown away just going to practice last year, watching the hard knock stuff. that they didn't have a veteran.
There were guys out there. Go get one of these guys that you know is not going to play. That's basically a coach in cleats. Um you know, somebody like a like a Josh McCown. Right.
Obviously, he's coaching now, but somebody like that towards the end of their career where. If you get in a jam and he's got to play two games, hopefully he can win one of them. But we're not expecting this guy to start 10 games for us. He's here to help the rookie. Right.
And McCown's. Yeah, McCown's in Minnesota right now on KOC staff. And. Uh I guess This this subject matter I brought it up to drive to the question of now Ben Johnson's there.
Well, I think that's why it's been such a rude awakening. That's what I'm saying.
So, what you just mentioned, again, we don't know. the exact details of whatever conversations Caleb was having with the staff that was, as we all know, turned over midseason. But is this the stuff that's being sent in Caleb's direction? And he's processing for the first time in a training camp, and we're gonna see against Minnesota. Like, is that?
What's happening and if so, how do you think it's going to work?
Well, I think Without obviously being there every day, my guess and my sense from talking to other people who are familiar with Ben Johnson. He's an intense guy. He's all about protocols and systems that he's created. That we're gonna trust this system and this protocol, and you go through your checklist. And if it doesn't work, get down, throw the ball away, get us out of trouble.
You're gonna have to do that maybe a handful of times in the game. But another two handfuls of times in a game, I'm gonna put you in a really good spot and you're just gonna deliver the ball exactly where I tell you. Like, that's kind of the vibe you get from talking to Jared Goff about his former coordinator. But the, the, the level of efficacy is high. He wants a very high standard.
and to the point where early in training camp i remember that article comes out that Caleb got kicked off the field with the first team offense. I got it. Uh, just about anything that what happened was they had some shifts and motions and whatever, and guys just weren't lining up right, and it didn't work out right. And he just said, Hey, get the hell out of here. If you can't do the pre-snap stuff, you can't run plays for me, move.
Next group. You know what I mean? And it's. Not because he doesn't think he's going to be the starter, right? It's more of just making a point.
It's almost like raising your kids. You know, like, hey, is this the way you're going to act? All right, then I got some chores for you to do around the house, by the way. You know what I mean? Hey, that lawn looks a little long.
Why don't you don't mow it? Why don't you go pick up the dog poop in the backyard? And why don't you clean the pool? And they're just like, whoa. What happened?
It's like, well, then don't act like a jerk. or do what you're supposed to do. And so I think In those situations, those were that's different than what Caleb has experienced in college. And last year in the NFL.
So it was eye-opening for him and a little shocking. But he's one of those guys who's so smart. He's so sharp. He can read the room. He's just going to rise with that tide.
You do not think that's a good idea. You do think so. You do think so. I do. I really think Ben's going to push him in the right way.
To get him to perform. And that's part of it as a coach. You're a part of a psychologist, not just a teacher. You got to understand how to connect with these guys and bridge the gap with these guys. How is he raised?
How do his parents talk to him? How can I get him? to get a little angry without getting reckless. You know, how do I push his buttons a little bit? How do I get this guy to get juiced up and get the rest of the players around him excited?
Do I have to love up Tyson Bagent so he gets a little jealous? And then, oh shoot, no. No, I gotta perform, you know, whatever it takes. you got to get it out of them and so i think dun johnson was toying with that and a lot of A lot of this training camp, the first time you get a quarterback that you're excited about, that you think has a ton of potential, you throw everything at them. throw everything at them, and then as the season starts, you can kind of spoon feed them what.
works and then we keep working towards the growth of this position in this player. Fascinating. What do you think about golf without Ben Johnson? Because to me, the national conversation involving the Lions, Mark, is through the prism of what happened to the Eagles. After they made the Super Bowl, lost both coordinators, took a step back.
Dan Campbell doesn't have Ben Johnson for his offense. Aaron Glenn, as you all know. Is with the Jets right now. And everyone's kind of forgetting that this roster is insanely talented and also. At present, doesn't have a million people on injured reserve like they suffered last year and were still the one seed.
What do you think about Goff minus Ben Jonson? Is that a narrative that is Fair?
Well, I think we're not. here i think they're getting uh it's fair to question because they've had so much success and then when one person uh when one member of that party leaves it's like okay well who are they now we'll find out in week one through 17. But With Johnny Morton coming in, he was actually our receivers coach at USC in 2008. And he's been in the league forever. Great offensive mind.
And this dude is intense. He is, I mean, if you could pick somebody to replace Ben Johnson and match the intensity level. Uh the way he's able to get the most out of his players while still in front of other players. just undressing these dudes verbally i mean He's a tough sucker now. He don't pull any punches.
And he's going to tell you exactly where you need to be, former wide receiver.
So his. One of his main pet peeves is: you just got to be where the quarterback expects you when he expects you there. That's it. Like Nobody likes an Uber who's late. Nobody likes anything late.
Just get there when you're supposed to be there, dude. The app said five minutes. I'm expecting five minutes. Not that hard. You know what I mean?
And so I think with the type of players they have. The tight-knit kind of camaraderie that this team, it's a familial. Kind of team, you know, this team is bigger than just football, it transcends the sport. They got the whole city on their back, they're feeling. Everything there, you know, Detroit versus the world.
So I think they have some things in place that will help a new coordinator like Johnny Morton. He's called plays before. The real question is on the other side of the ball on defense, right? Kelvin Shepard, former linebacker, LSU, first-time coordinator on defense, is replacing Aaron Glenn, who's now obviously the head coach with the Jets. Aaron Glenn in 10 sky.
That I mean their whole Crew is about that intense family dynamic in Detroit.
So, can these guys Replace what they had, and either match that success or surpass that success. And those are fair question marks to have, but I do think. with the people they've put in those situations and the personnel that they've retained. They got a shot to be just as good. I'm just worried about the division.
Sure. The division is going to cannibalize itself. You got really good teams across the board, and then the Bears are like this wild card. If they turn it on, I mean, all these teams are going to have winning records and two of them aren't going to make the playoffs maybe.
So I don't know. That's going to be a tough one to call in the North. In the couple minutes I have left with you, Mark Sanchez. What do you think about the Jets season? You know, Justin Fields getting his shot, Aaron Glenn, his long-waited shot.
They made some smart moves. I mean, Fields is a kid with upside. He's only $20 million, two-year deal. And they also signed their rookies of the year from two years ago, a couple of years ago, long term.
So they're not going to be wondering if they're there. They made some plays. How do you think it all works out? Yeah. Uh, it's it's an interesting question.
Are you sure we have time for this one? Oh, you know, wait a minute. Hold on a second. I'm getting a call. You're getting a one of your five-year-old twins are calling for daddy.
Yes, there we go. That's it. Wait, they're done going the lawnmower. No, so it's this is a tough one because I think you know, you get. You get Justin Fields and calling their preseason game.
Uh, earlier this season, I called preseason game two against the Giants, and that was just a tough outing. I got to watch both of their. Um joint practices I thought the Jets looked much better in the practices than they did in the game. Which You know, take that for what you want. It's not always.
going to be perfect in games but you'd like to see something um this team has got to be the way they're the way they're built and their personnel They've shirt up the offensive line. They've gone with Some young talent on the outside. Both tackles. Right.
And They got to run the football. I mean, Braylon Allen and Brees Hall have to be absolutely worn out. And if they really want to be good, And win some games. They're gonna have to win with some tough defense, which Aaron Glenn is gonna inject into this team. He's inheriting a solid group so long as Johnson's healthy coming back.
From some injuries, and then Quentin Williams obviously missed a lot of the preseason. Is he gonna be all right? You get those two guys together. with some of their other veteran talent, I think. Got a legit defense.
I like where they're out on defense, but Justin Field is going to have to be a part of the run game, and there's going to be. There's this need for a wide receiver too. Who's going to step up besides Garrett Wilson? Because he got doubled in that preseason game a couple of times. They forced the ball to him.
you know, balls on the ground, getting tipped away. You know, you got to have somebody that the defense has to scheme and game plan for somebody other than Garrett Wilson. Is that going to be Mason Taylor, the rookie tight end? Is that going to be one of these other receivers by committee? Who's that going to be?
Arian Smith from Georgia. You know, we got to solve the drops. There's still a lot to be desired in the passing game, unfortunately, but I think they're going to make a little bit of a run. They're going to scare some teams because they're tough, because they play the type of defense that Aaron Glenn wants. They're going to erase.
Some poor offensive drives with turnovers by the defense. That's what he preaches. You might move the ball between the 20s, but I'm taking that ball away at some point, and we're going the other way with it. But if they want to be good, they better run the heck out of the ball. We're talking 30 plus.
Rush is the game. And um You know, and they got to play some great defense and steal so they got to be better on special teams too, Rich. I'm sorry, Barry, the headline, they lost about three games on special teams last year, it was horrible. That was tough. And I mean, those three games changed the course of their season.
Just with a field goal kick here or there. And so I think Nick Folk. can help sure that up. But special teams have to be a weapon. Defense has to take the ball away and the offense's got to run the heck out of it.
Mark, have a great season with week one. And I believe you're international. You call it an international game? We're calling a Berlin game. The Berlin game.
Fantastic. Yeah. I mean, what a city. And they love their football there, man. Have a great season, but let's talk before then, obviously.
You know, congrats on those two twin girl five-year-olds. Best of luck. Five-month-old. Five-month-old. Pardon me.
Yeah. So they're definitely getting to work. You're very good. Mark, thanks again, man, on this, and we'll chat down the line. Absolutely.
Sounds great. Thanks, guys. Awesome. Fun stuff. Smart stuff from Mark Sanchez right there.

But when the Vince Lombardi trophy is sitting between the two of us, I think I lose out. Michael Irvin, right? I think I lose out to this baby, right? And it's so funny you start with this because I'm going to tell you something, man. Yes.
I made a pat that I would never go to a Super Bowl until I play in the Super Bowl. Every guest that comes here, they're going to get Super Bowl questions. That's why I always say I would never go to a Super Bowl until after I play in a Super Bowl.
So I would not have people like Rich Eisen asking me questions that I cannot answer.
Now, what do you want to ask, Rich? Because I'm prepared to answer since I won three of these things.
So what was it like picking this trophy up for the first time? It was the greatest thing in the world. And it really was, Rich. It really was. Do you remember the circumstances?
Oh, my God, man. First of all, you got to go back and think about like we were 1 in 15. We were 3 and 13, 1 in 15. When you're 3 in 13 and 1 in 15 Cleveland Browns, I know you don't think there's any chance that you will ever lay a hold of something like this.
So to go from those days to coming in 92 and winning that Super Bowl and actually somebody handing you that trophy. The most incredible thing, most incredible feeling in the world. Did you ever step in when you heard that Jimmy and Jerry were not? Doing well, or you just your station wasn't that life effectively. I just didn't think anything would happen, Rich.
I really didn't. I was like, Are you joking? You know how hard it is to win Super Bowls and you have a formula that's working, and then when it happens, like, oh my God. Like, you know, I should have done this. Maybe I should have talked to him.
I should have tried this. I should have tried that. Jerry Jones, I'm telling you, that's the one thing. I'll never forget Jerry Jones telling me that when I was negotiating with him, and I was saying, you know, I'll go to Cincinnati. And it was just, I'm just talking, trying to get my monies up.
I said, I'll go to Cincinnati. You get car pickings over here and let's see what happens. And Jerry said to me, Did Jerry said, Michael, you know, when I see you, I see Michael Irving and the Dallas Cowboys. He said, I kind of see it like Magic Johnson and the Lakers. He said, what is Magic without the Lakers?
And what are the Lakers without the Magic? He said, you guys, they belong together just like you and the Cowboys. He said, Michael, the best way I can tell you, if a bomb hit Valley Ranch today, that's where we practice and blew everything. Everything up. Everything.
When the smoke clears, baby, me and you, we gonna still be here.
So we might as well work this deal out right now. That's what he said, T My Bromis. I said, this dude is a fool. This dude is a fool. He had me laughing as he was telling me no about my money.
Yeah. Oh. That's why you're in the Hall of Fame together. Michael Irvin's latest appearance 10 minutes away, right here on the Rich Eisen show, and lots to talk about with him with that Netflix documentary on his era of the Cowboys. And then, of course, he had Jerry Jones on his show last week, and that made headlines.
I need. to nominate Michael for the guy to break the la Log jam going on with the Dallas Cowboys. And you second that emotion, do you not? Absolutely.
Somebody's got to do it. That's coming up. It's coming up. Great stuff from Mark Sanchez. Excellent insight on what's going on potentially with Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson and how the Lions should be just as fine.
Moving on with Johnny Morton, it appears. Um and then Seems like there'll be some bumpy road for the Jets with some exception of uh Putting some scare in some people. We'll see. What Mark's what's talking about obviously coming up. Let's go to Where are you going right now?
Ben in Austin, Texas. What's up and Ben in Austin, Texas? Hey fellas, what's good? We're good. What's on your eyes, man?
Hey, well, football that counts arrives today.
So I just wanted to give the locals perspective on the Longhorns and contrast that with what I'm hearing from my father-in-law, who is a Diehard OSU graduate.
Okay. Cool. So two key points of victory. Folks in Austin here keep calling out. Arch over saying Texas D over Ohio State's defense.
So I wanted to break that down a bit because I think there's some saving points here. Though Arch has a slight edge in experience and physicality, I wouldn't let that height blind you to the fact that this is his biggest game to date as a starter. Sure. It comes on the road. in the shoe, and I think that that's going to lead to some mistakes.
Now, with Saiyan, his throwing motion and release point are very similar to a former Longhorn QB, Quinn Ewers. And Sam's height has not been measured as far as I can tell.
So even if he's six foot flat, That gives me some tip ball concerns. Um on defense Not a ton of starters carrying over on either team, but Texas has slightly more and did more to fill holes with high-impact players, in my opinion. Um, plus, of the two coordinators that OSU is replacing, the defensive side would concern me a bit more. Sure, um, look at you, Ben. My father, you're locked in.
Andre Rich feels the same way.
Okay, no, no, no, you just locked us in right there, Ben. Who wins?
Now, I need to now you just got to give me who wins in the 30 seconds I have. I got 30 seconds to win. All that said, I got two predictions for you guys.
Okay, Arch is going to have two TDs in the air and one on the ground. That's for you, TJ. I love that. And then I. I see each team with two turnovers, but Texas makes the most of those opportunities with one coming wait.
So I got Texas 24. Ohio State, 17. Ben and Austin, everybody. Yeah. Then you might have to call in every week to give us this information.
Ohio State one and a half point favorites. Wow. I would take that final score. With a 47.5 point total, so Ben's going under. Ben's going under.
And Texas wins the game. Dogs in the under. Dogs in the under. Michael Irvin joining us next, and Seth Wickersham in studio hour two with Adam Ray behind. Still right here on the Roku Channel.
Hey. Hey, hey, I would take that result. I would take that result. Helps my narrative. Anything that narrative three tutties, Arch Heisman.
Okay. Texas number one. Keep on moving, man. Toward the netty. I think my narrative is me living my life on the seven seas.
You know that? I would like to fell in the middle. Let's be honest now. I'm showing it straight up. Yeah.
What type of boat do you think these cards will? When you say seven seas, you're talking about oceans. I thought you were talking about marinas. This is Arch Manning, Rich.
So Archie Manning. Local? What sort of, what size vessel do you believe these cards will? I'm going to be very honest with you. I'm going to have to talk to my boat consulting, one, J.
Michael Del Tufo, and he will help Michael Del Tufo. I can tell you how much will the boat be worth. What's the most expensive rookie card sold for? Great question. I mean, the top five figures, Mikey, five figures.
Give me five figures. Yeah, so it's art.
So five figures, he's got... TJ can buy a lot of boats in my harbor for five. I got five cards, too, Mike. Not just one. I got five.
Oh, hold on.
So he's going to be one of the boats. It's not just this one. This is what I showed you. Wait, hold on. 30-foot, Mikey?
No, while we're doing this silliness. Silly? Yeah, okay, you're not lighted. You can't get a 30-footer for five figures. No, five cards.
Five cards. He's got five cards. But wait a minute. Let's just say that Arch does what. Chris says.
Chris, I've already put him in the Hall of Fame. You wouldn't cash your card in then. You would then wait to see what the NFL corrections are. I mean, like I said two years ago, I already predicted Hall of Fame and Gold Jacket and titles.
So don't talk five figures. We're now talking. Eight. Six.
Well, the hype is higher for the cards heading into the rookie year. Of NFL. Oh, you want to cash out of the hype? Oh, Rich. But what if he turns into Uncle Payton?
Well, that's what I'll say. I'll keep two on Death. And now you've got rookie cards. You can hold a couple, but you want to cash out on that hype. You're not riding the Seven Seas.
You're in a marina. He's eating at the Seven Seas restaurant, maybe. Why are you trying to handcuff me, Rich? Just be happy for us. It's not like we're all going to summer in Santorini like your Bezos.
Oh, no. Hold up, Bat. Archie Manny's going to be the GOAT. I'm telling you. The ghost of all time.
According to Google Gemini, a 30-foot boat can cost anywhere from 50 to over 500. That's what I mean. He does good with five cards? You're right. Archie.
He's going to have to win five Super Bowls.
So you're using what Ben and Austin just said, that happens. And then the Saints lose opener to the Cardinals in their filthy, dirty rivalry uniforms. Oh, come on. And then you're in like Flynn. Look at her nerves coming up next.
Rock the boot. Right.
I am Michael Rosenbaum. I am Tom Welling. Welcome to Talk Bill. Where it's fun to talk about small books. We're going to be talking to sometimes guest stars.
Are you liking the direction Plois is going in? Yeah, because I'm getting more screen time. That's good. But mostly it's just me and Tom remembering. I think we all feel like there was a scene missing here.
You got me, Tom. Let's revisit it. Let's look at it. See what we remember. See what we remember.
I had never been around anything like that before. I mean, it was so fun. Talk, Bill. Talk Bill. I just had a flashback.
