For the ones who get it done. Earlier on the show, co-founder and CEO of Lava Media, Jason Flom. Coming up, Baseball Hall of Famer, John Smoltz.
Plus, latest news and more. And now, it's Rich Eisen. Our number three of the Rich Eisen Show is on the air. Lots to talk about in this third hour of the program as we're hunting and pecking for any NFL news happening in all these mini camps that will actually mean something in September. I'm seeing Aaron Rodgers running out there on the field with the Pittsburgh Steelers right now. He's taking his reps. Oh, he just threw a nice pass to somebody of the staff.
It was great. That was his intended receiver. I mean, you know what I mean? Like, this is the way we're rolling right now. We're waiting on it. Are we burying the lead here?
Which is? The fact that Tommy Maddox was confident enough in himself to give up his number eight for Aaron. You think Aaron scratched him a check? I don't think so at all. Because I'm sure eight was hanging in the rafters.
It had to be. You know what Aaron would tell you about that storyline? Go chew on bark. No, Terry would say that. Well, that's why he's not wearing 12.
Chew on bark. That's right. Thank you so much. 844-204 Rich is the number to dial. He's a baseball Hall of Famer. He's fresh back from calling Red Sox Yankees on Fox. He's going to be at the 36th American Century Championship tournament that begins in Tahoe Wednesday, July 9th through the 13th.
He is baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz. Good to see you, John. How are you?
Hey, I'm doing OK. Here's the here's the really good news, John, especially since I'm not going to affect the the leaderboard in any way, shape or form for the American Century Championship. I am making my return to the tournament for the first time in 21 years in July. I will be there, John. I will be there. That is great news.
Thank you. Great news that I'm there or that I'm not a threat whatsoever for you to actually win the thing. John, which one is it? Both. Both. Both great news. All right.
I will take that. I appreciate that. But I am I am genuinely looking forward to it. I mean, it is it is an outstanding event to watch on TV. I do remember 21 years ago when I was there last. It's just it's it's only gotten better from what I'm told over the last few years. Yeah, it's as good of a tournament as you'll ever want to play at this time of the year where it's at and with the obviously with the 91 different personalities, probably 10 to 12 will have a chance to win.
The rest are out there having fun, talking smack, mixing and matching. And there's going to be 30 to 50 thousand people out there over the weekend. So, you know, the game you want to have your game when you're there, you want to hit good shots. But more importantly, it's just the perfect setting, the great American Century championship and what they do for all their charities and all the foundation work.
I mean, it's it's a jewel. And again, I'm excited to play. Who are you most concerned about to actually win the thing, John? Oh, I'm concerned about everybody because I have yet to win. I'm turned 58 years old. I'm going to be the oldest winner whenever I do win because I will win.
But I'm running out of time. Marty Fish is the best we've got. Steph Curry didn't get a chance to defend. He's going to be back to defend two years ago. And I just think there's about eight to 10 to 12 players who continuously get better. And I think that's what's best about it.
I've got to find a way to figure out those greens. And if I do, I'm going to win. There's no doubt. I have no doubt I'm going to win. It's just a matter of when. Let's go.
Speak this into existence, man. So you finished top five last year. You had a top five finish last year. So that's good.
You know? Yeah. I'm in the top.
Yeah. I'm in the top 10 most of the time. And I finished second a couple times. But the reality is I've got the game to win. I just haven't had the putter on that golf course to make enough putts the way it works. You know it. You got to make birdies. And I set the par record for third for, you know, three rounds. That's not something you want to do. You want it. You want to make enough birdies and get enough points and be in position.
So those guys make a lot more birdies than I have. And now I got to figure out a way to do that. Good news is for me, I'll be there all week because the All-Star game is after. So I'll scramble to get to the All-Star game in my hometown in Atlanta and a call up for Fox. Just flying in at the seat of my pants after the All-Star game, trying to get my game ready for the weekend. Come on.
You know, you've done this before, man. You've played in All-Star games. You've pitched in All-Star games. You've you got this.
I think you're going to be just fine doing it. Let's put it this way. Will you at least be the best finishing baseball player? Or how about this best finishing Hall of Famer in any sport that's in the field, right? Yeah, I'm going to guarantee that latter. I'm going to guarantee that you can book that. Baseball is going to come down to Mark Boulder, Derek Lowe.
Got it. Got some good baseball players and and I've been training. Listen, I've been getting stronger. I'm tired of these guys bombing it by me.
And they're going to be pleasantly surprised on my distance when I get there. And the fact that that I'm making this is not a New Year's resolution anymore. I made a decision about four or five months ago. I said, I'm tired of this at my hip. It's your place. Those are great. I'm going to get my upper body in shape.
And then before you know it, next three to five years, I'll have a good run at golf. Okay. And you would still beat Maddox and Glavin, right? If they were in the field, John? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're not in the same conversation.
They know it. That's okay, though. Glavin just wants to beat me once. He's come close.
Don't think it's going to happen. But, you know, we've had a lot of fun playing golf together and we'll just see what happens. I got to tell you, man, every now and then, because, you know, my base, my algorithm on Instagram has a ton of baseball in it. And every now and then there'll be a story about Maddox and his magic and his, you know, ability to set people up months in advance. There was one where I guess he threw a pitch to Bagwell that he knew would potentially be parked. And he was doing it in the regular season, knowing that if he faces him in the playoffs, he's going to do something else. And he set him up and struck him out. Like, this is real? This actually happened with Greg Maddox back in the day, John?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was ahead of his game. He had some weird, weird philosophies. And sitting next to him when we watched the game together, it was interesting to see what he thought, like mad thinker, scientist. But when he pitched, he was really, you didn't want to sit next to him. He really got frustrated when certain guys didn't follow what they should be doing.
Like, he thinks A plus B is C every single time. And so he would set guys up and spring training a lot for the season. And then during the season, if he felt like there was a matchup down the road and that one with Bagwell did play out, and he came up with the bases loaded in the playoffs and he was able to pitch him the way he wanted to instead of the way that he had got. A lot of us couldn't think like that.
We were more worried about getting each hitter out. He was ahead of the game. You got another good story from Maddox? Anything that you saw? Anything that he told you you should do? That you went ahead and followed and it worked out for you?
Anything? Because I can't get enough of stories like this, John. Yeah, he did. He did. But he also got me messed up too a little bit.
But he definitely, we picked each other's brain. I asked him in the playoffs when I was closing. Hey, I'm facing Barry Bonds in the ninth. What do you think if I do this? Throw two pitches in, move his feet, and then throw one up and in because I never pitched him like that.
What do you think? He goes, oh, I think that'll work. And so I get in the ninth inning. We got a good lead. I'm not going to lose the game because of this pitching attack.
And Barry Bonds hit that third pitch, chest high, out of the park, 440 feet without it hooking down the line. And when I came in after the game, Maddox goes, how'd that work out for you? I said, thanks a lot. I just thought that was going to be a good plan. How'd that work out for you, huh? That is so funny. And it's wrong.
It's wrong and it's right at the same time. But I guess that's teammates for you, John, right? I mean, unbelievable. OK, the best team in Major League Baseball that you've seen so far this year is which? Well, the best team that I've seen is probably the Dodgers, but the best team that might be in baseball that I haven't seen yet might be the Tigers. And who thought that was going to be the conversation that we'd be having right now with the way that they're playing baseball? The best team in the Dodgers don't even have their best team on the field. They've got 14 guys that are currently on or have been on the aisle, so they haven't really even gotten going to the point where the roster is about as good as it gets. The Yankees are very good in the American League that I've gotten a chance to see, but it's going to be wide open in the American League, I believe, to the degree of who makes those moves in the second half.
But the Detroit Tigers are really, really good ballclub that I'm sure I will see in the second half at some point in my schedule. Do you think the Dodgers should pitch Otani? What do you think?
I do. I do think they should pitch him, and I think that's what he wants. The reality of what he did and why he came over here is all about playing two ways. So I think in a perfect world, in the next three years, that'll end. But in the next three years, he's going to want to do this, and you've got to honor that for the greatest player of our generation. Second half, he'll start pitching. He's got such a weapon on the mound. He'll get used to that second surgery, and then next year, watch out. Next year could be the most complete year we've ever seen out of anybody in the history of our game. And he's such a great athlete. His ability to conform and manipulate not only pitches, but the bat, his speed, it's second to none.
And you're running out of words to describe him. Now, you're saying next year it's because it's usually that long to come off of the Tommy John surgery until you get back to where you can be. Do you think potentially October could be next year type Otani?
What do you think? Well, yeah, I think the good fact that if you can get 10 starts under your belt before he gets in the postseason, and I think that's realistic, he'll be able to pitch meaningful games for the Dodgers. Again, they won a World Series last year without starters healthy. That's not going to happen again this year. They've got to find a way to get starters healthy. And the starters on paper when healthy is as good as rotation they'll ever see. But they've had this problem for five years. So until they figure that out, they're throwing a lot of money at the problem and a lot of players to mix in the match.
And they're having their eyes on Otani being a big part of that, I would believe, in the second half. All right, John. So what do you give what advice do you give to somebody who hasn't been in the American Century championship for 21 years, who has issues on occasion breaking 100?
What do you what do you say to that individual, John Smoltz? What I would say is find a favorite club. You don't need a lot of dents at this golf course. It just puts it in play from double bogeys. That's all you have to do is stay away from double bogeys.
So find a stick that just keeps it on the straight and narrow best you can. Avoid the avoid the sixes and sevens is what you're saying. That's that works. Of course, the most important part of this conversation where I get my opinion, I got to get my advice.
Yeah. Stay away from double bogeys. OK, I will do that. John, thanks for the time. We'll get you back on in short order. And if not, I will see you in in Lake Tahoe in a couple of weeks. And I look forward to that. That's John Smoltz.
Can't wait. Thanks for having me and suffering through this Internet. Dude, it's all good.
Thanks for the time. That's John Smoltz, everybody. Baseball Hall of Famer.
He and Joe Davis are a great listen. Smoltz is the king of saying something and then it happens on the screen. Yeah, Rich, because that's the thing in American Century, a double bogey is minus two points. So avoid that. Avoid that. A bogey is zero and that's good. So if you just play bogey golf, you'll be zero and you'll be right in the middle of the pack. Because last time you were fit the last.
Lots happen in 21 years. I've gotten worse. Davante Adams, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, Aaron Rodgers. At least it's not in front of people who I know and cover. Charles Barkley, Jerome Bettis.
It's not like Jerome's looking to make fun of me. Nope. Joe Price. There we go. Joe Buck's going to be there.
Joe Buck. Yeah. Derek Carr, see how his shoulder's doing? Yeah.
Demarcus Ware. Yeah. My guy. I mean, these are all a bunch of people I know. Yeah.
The Currys. Sam Darnold's going to be there. Hey, isn't that great? That'll be good to see him. Fitzmagic. Dwight Freaney.
Larry Fitzgerald. Where is this at, by the way? This is Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe, baby.
Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The Kelseys. Oh. I know them. Yeah.
Trevor Lawrence. Okay. Yeah. A bunch of people you'll never see again if you do horribly in this. You just got to beat the Miz, Rich.
I mean, because he's not good at golf. That's who I got to beat, right? Yeah. Just at least. And everybody beats the Miz? Is that what you're saying? Right.
Right. Nobody beats the Miz. Everybody meets the Miz.
Oh, Matty Ice is going to be there? Oh. You can pitch him one more time in your nickname. I'm through with that. He knows I'm out of that game.
Emmett. It's too bad. I tried. It's his loss.
You did everything. Matty Ice. He's walking around. A man.
No nickname. A father. A father. A husband. An MVP. A lot of football guys. You know, a historically great Atlanta Falcons quarterback with a nickname because he used to drink this certain beer as a teenager. Come on.
I try to save him from that sort of stuff. You did your best, Joe. Big Whit. Charles Woodson. Steve Young.
I know all of them. Mike Vrabel. Earl Acker. He won't have something to say.
I'm going to say Rich, a bunch of people you'll never have to run into after this. Joey T. Adam Thielen. You got to move on.
You got to move on. I know. Okay. Rich, the lead singer of Chicago is going to be there. Pete Cetera? No. Jason Scheff. Oh. He's not the lead singer. Come on. Pete Cetera. That's Pete Cetera.
You know what? I'm the inspiration. You're the meaning in all of our lives. Thank you, sir. T.J. Oshie just retired. Oh. Okay. Right. Rob McElhinney was just here. He's quiet. That's right.
That's okay. Anybody else? Steph Curry. Seth Curry. George Curry. George Kittle.
All the Curry's. George Kittle. Kittle will be there, huh? That's great. Yep. That's great. Ready to roll. I'll tell you what my saving grace is.
The saving grace is Thursday night, night before the tournament begins, fresh off of the Pro-Am, there is a karaoke evening competition. That's the word on the street. Yeah. I will win it. Oh. Oh, God.
You sound like smoke has been guaranteed. Wow. I will win it. Eysen Palooza. I will win it. Win it.
I will get the first trophy of the weekend. Colin Jost is there. Fine.
Two Staten Islanders going at it. That's fine. Jake Owen literally is a country music artist. Okay. That's great.
He's there. But that's not fair. That's not fair. That's not fair. You can't have a professional. You can't have.
That's why there's no pro golfers in this field. Alfonso Ribeiro. I imagine he can hold a tune. That's fine. I'll take him out. Okay.
Are you sure about that? Absolutely. I will take him out. Maybe you and Ray Romano can do a duet.
He don't need a duet. He's not the captain to kneel. It's just the captain. Yeah.
You need to kneel. Yeah. Jake Owen is a professional singer. It's not like Sinatra and Marie. You know, it's just Sinatra. You know what I mean? You're not Peaches and Herb.
Yeah. It's not Sinatra and Dunn. You don't need Herb. You just need Peaches.
You're Peaches. I don't think David Wells should do a duet. You know what? Jack Wagner, also a singer.
Jack Wagner should not be allowed in the karaoke contest at all. I think we've listed everyone who's going to be. All I need is another, right? Just a little more time. Just a little more time.
Right? Jack Wagner. I haven't seen Jack Wagner in a long time.
He was at the Jimmy V all the time. DJ, we should go. Demarcus Ware's going to be there. Let's go.
I should just get Rich my jersey. You guys are not invited. Are you going to invite us anywhere?
What does that mean? What's your caddy situation? Tadoom. Tadoom.
You couldn't even tell us you were going to be at Tadoom. My manager to the stars, Don Weir, is my caddy. Interesting.
So. Is he good at golf? He is. He's good at golf. Chris, that's kind of messed up because if he's a manager to the stars, he's going to be prepping the course. He's walking?
He's out there walking right now? I'm one of those guys that will have the yardage and I'll just look at him and go, whatever. That's my problem. This is my issue. I just want to hit it straight. You've got to practice. I got it.
I know I've got to practice. I understand. I'm a father of three.
I've got to show. But your kids are old. They're self sustainable. They're not. They're not.
They are. They could survive on their own. Just get a grip. Just because you sometimes take your son and throw him with some Lunchables and do your own damn thing doesn't mean that that's that works forever. It's a long road.
It's still alive. Rich, you know that if she had to, Taylor would take care of the boys. I wouldn't even be worried about that. So you I need you like an hour a day putting locked in where right here we're talking about the golf course here putting green where you were driving rangers all over town. I'm going to be fine putting. I'm not concerned about putting. Oh, goodness. I honestly am not concerned about putting at all.
Just give me the number of this. You just heard John Smoltz came in fourth last year. He's only concerned about putting because that's the difference between winning and losing. I'm just trying to not get embarrassed. You understand me? That sounds like a loser mentality. That's not a loser mentality.
It is a realistic mentality and it is something you need to back off. I'm winning the karaoke night. That's what I'm focused on.
One championship at a time. Okay, I got you because I'm going to sneak up on people. They're going to think who's this guy and then I'm going to blow the doors off the place and the ball great, great, the tap dance kid, you know, sing wow, years later, Tim Horton question with the person before you because it's how it is not fair if he is in the if anybody who seems professionally should not be allowed in the same reason that if you play golf professionally, you're not allowed in the field here. I agree with you.
I hate it when people really say to a tennis competition and Marty fish is like, I'm first in. No, you're not allowed. That's not that's not it.
That's not how this works. I haven't been around for 21 years, but let me tell you American Century Championship how to run your week. Sounds like Jason's uncle. All right, seriously, I'm going to win that Thursday night carry out. I'm going to sing that's life and I'm going to I'm going to throw the microphone down.
I'm going to walk out and Susie's going to be there going, Oh God, I've seen this too many times. What if a person before you sings that's life? Are you going to? You have a beat? You have an alternate song? Absolutely.
What do you think? I'm just going to make sure you're prepared. If anybody dares to sing that song, it won't be as good as me. I'll sing.
I'll sing it after them. And I'll I'll say that's embarrassing. I like that. Wow. You say it's life.
You say that person that's life. I like it. You know, I'll be shot. You're shot down in July. Not May. You know, I like this version of you, right?
The pump out version. Can you please practice putting I will make you I am on it. OK. I've got this. OK. All right. Damn it. All right. To do. I'm going to have a great time because otherwise I'll see I'll see in 2046 eight four four two oh four.
Rich number to tell. Oh, the Browns have spoken. The Browns have spoken. Oh, yeah. They made the starting quarterback. Roger is going to speak.
They do have a chance to speak at eight four four two oh four rich coming up. Every once in a while, I'll pull up a video of, you know, I'll show, you know, my kids or other kids or whatever, and I'll show there's a video of me at Lincoln Center with Michael Jackson and the story that I tell, which is always very funny, is right before he walked out on stage, he went to the bathroom and accidentally dropped his sequined glove in the toilet. Come on. No.
True story. Dropped it in the toilet. He's freaking out. Is it the only one? It's the one. It's the glove.
Right? He's got one glove. He didn't come with multiple. He didn't have a suitcase of gloves.
He had the glove. He dropped it in the toilet. Like, he must have taken it off, put it on the sink or something, and it fell on the toilet. He's freaking out. And like, finally he realized, wait a minute, he reaches in, grabs his glove, and the rest of us are like, but he dropped the glove, and what you going to do with the glove, bro?
Right? And so we had to go out on stage, and he has a soaking wet sequined glove on. From the toilet. From the toilet. Of Lincoln Center. At Lincoln Center. Lincoln Center toilet water on the glove.
This is the first time I'm ever telling this story on TV. Wow. Wow. This is a Rich Eisen first. I appreciate it.
Thank you. One would have to think, though, I mean, if any toilet water Lincoln Center's got to be your top-notch toilet water. I mean, the question to me was whether he flushed it first. That was my question.
Right? Did he flush and then pull, or did he pull, then flush? I think that's a huge difference.
There is a huge difference there. A pull and flush is much better than a flush and pull. No, you want to flush and pull. Get all the dirty water away, the new clean water kind of cleans it off a little bit, and then you pull the glove out, right?
Yeah, exactly. I don't know. I stand by the pull and flush. Either way, that's gross. It's not great.
It's very gross. And it's great storytelling, and he's a great entertainer. He should not be allowed in the karaoke contest, Tom. Alan Dallas wants to chime in. What's up, Alan? How you doing, sir? As long as Alex Rodriguez plays again this year, you need to beat him, Richard. You got to do it.
You can't lose to A-Rod. It's a pretty impressive list of the... I'm looking at the back end. I'm just being realistic, Rich. It's a pretty impressive list of athletes. You better bring your A-game. I hear you, Al. I'm not worried about Thursday.
Thursday, you'll have plenty of spring oil to prompt you up there. Talking about the karaoke contest hosted by Rob Riggle? Yeah. I'm going to take it down. I mean... I'm behind you. Unless it's rigged. Unless it's rigged against me. I mean, no, no, no.
I can't imagine anybody, you know, a combination of not expecting it and delivering. No one's going to beat that combination of me stepping up there. So... And what if Peterman jumps in? Is Peterman...
But he's also... Doesn't he do singing and entertaining? Doesn't he? I don't know. I don't know if he's on the 20-25 list. I don't know.
I mean, Nate Berghezzi might spin a tune. We don't know. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's fun. That's great.
I don't know. That's awesome. I'm going to take it down, Al. And I appreciate the two cents and the confidence that I need to bring my A-game.
There is no such thing when it comes to me in golf. So I just... Brockman just said, don't bring your double bogey game. And I got it.
I'll do it. Yeah. Yeah.
He wants me to chip. Yeah. I think that's a good strategy.
I think that's a good strategy. I think the, the Instagram, you know, like we get into these algorithm feeds and I am just fascinated with those Maddox, the Maddox and Gwynn stuff. Those are great, aren't they? Unbelievable. It's just like, you read some of these things and you hear this stuff.
It's just, it's just awesome. Can I, uh, can I just try them in real quick on the travesty that occurred last week with the New York Knickerbockers? Sure. Are you telling me, uh, again, another, another team, uh, you know, that fires the coach first and then doesn't have a plan. And their plan is to go pay compensation for somebody else's coach who has not had that great a success.
I mean, to get his team to the finals with Luca. But are they going to go pay for Jason Kidd to take over the New York Knicks? Looks like it. This actually that looks like it.
I don't know. I mean, that was the headline over the weekend. A great headline in the New York Post as well. And if you saw it, it was a photograph of Jason Kidd in the headline was Kidd in play. Mm hmm. Oh, my God.
It was the Saturday headline in the New York Post. Kidd in play the house party if he gets. I don't know.
I mean, listen, if he can if he and Brunson get along and it makes it in year and he's got a better offensive mindset and defensively, they don't suffer. I don't know, man. But all I know is like, you know, hey, Tibbs blew it by not playing Delon right enough or, you know, hey, Landry Shamet. They didn't turn to him soon enough. So everyone else was out of gas.
And Halliburton does it to Oklahoma City anyway. I kind of don't get it. But I mean, but it also came out that Dolan was sitting in on these meetings and Leon Rose was taking a second position running these these meetings with the players. I don't know. I don't know.
What what what was it? What are you used to call him? Not a schmageggy. What were you what were you calling Dolan? I was trying to think about this. A schmohawk, a schmohawk schmecke schmecke schmecke schmecke schmecke owner and a schmohawk. Yeah, yeah. Thanks for the reminder. The the morning the morning show in New York did like a calculation of the amount, you know, and I still listen to WFA and of course, the mornings.
Sure. They did a calculation of the the amount of money that they've paid coaches since, you know, Van Gundy. It's like one hundred and fifty million dollars. What does he care? I mean, he doesn't care. He's he's got the trust fund.
I mean, he doesn't care. And he's he's got the sphere now. He's got he's got the sphere. Yeah, he's got it all the real the other businesses don't do as well. But yeah, the sphere is killing it.
I will just give again to actually call out. I got to give him credit. Leon Rose has been terrific. You know, worldwide West's also being there. They've made some great moves.
They made they got as far as they did. I just I don't know what is the plan now that you've gotten rid of Thibodeau. We'll see. Apparently, Jay Wright wants no piece of it. Danny Hurley is not walking through that door. I don't know. Don't have an answer. We'll find out soon. Jason Kidd, does that intrigue you at all?
It does. I mean, again, once that you you've you've got rid of your guy, you can get a guy who knows what it takes to win a championship from a player perspective at the position Jalen Brunson plays. And if they do have a good relationship, as Jeff Teague said in our number one of this program, then that makes sense to me. OK, the question is like you are sitting there in Dallas. You've got Anthony Davis. Kyrie, hopefully coming back when?
Some point at the end of next year, if at all. Maybe. Right.
And Cooper Flag coming. You want to leave that? But it's New York, man. You would or not?
No, I would not. I would say in Dallas. You stay in Dallas. Yeah. You know, it's the lure of the garden. It's the lure of New York. That's true. We all say we but like if you got a chance and like we said, if you bring a winner to Madison Square Garden, bro.
Like, you know, that's as big as it can get. I'm not to obviously I'm not telling you anything. You don't know flags not walking through that door, is he? No, it's not a bad guy to just basically attach yourself with a hip to and say, OK, let's go.
But you don't know what you're getting in. Cooper Flag, you know, guys in jail and Brunson, you know, with cat, you know, with bridges. So I mean, sure.
Eight four four two or four rich number to dial. Let's talk quarterbacks. Let's talk quarterbacks. D'Amico Ryans has been saying, C.J. Stroud, I am not concerned.
I am unconcerned over the peck issue that's caused him to not throw a football. Guess who threw a football today for the Houston Texans? C.J. Stroud.
Oh, guess who gets to stand up there and be all unconcerned and not have it change a message from what he's been delivering. D'Amico Ryans. Oh, C.J. threw today, right? All right. Yeah. It's just the C.J. is a competitor. And last week, C.J., he was adamant about going out and practicing to show the type of person that C.J. is like he's. But for me, as a head coach, it's important for me to just make sure we're protecting him, making sure we're doing what's best for C.J.
and not really worried about the outside opinions or other people. Nobody knows the information about our players more than me. And so I'm going to make sure I always do what's in the best answers of our players.
First and foremost, with their health and wellness, that's always on the forefront of my mind. And so that's why the decision was made about C.J. I think you guys saw him out throwing today.
I think he looked pretty fine to me. All right. There you go. There's a coach who was sick and tired of hearing that narrative that they're in trouble because C.J. Stroud is not throwing. He gets all sarcastic. That's not a word I would use to describe D'Amico Ryan.
Yeah, he doesn't strike me as that in his personality. Albert Breer and his Monday morning quarterback that we were hunting, you know, that we're picking apart with Albert yesterday is talking about how the new offensive coordinator, Nick Kaley, is the passing game coordinator previously for the Los Angeles Rams is going to give C.J. Stroud a little bit more freedom to audible and call his own game.
In a way that Bobby Sloake wasn't, and that alone should help with Stroud and tap into his unique neck up abilities. That interesting stuff, Albert says, goes back to Ohio State. Isn't that interesting? But Albert does have insight on all of that, certainly from the Buckeyes perspective, since he's such a homer. But did I did I say it? I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm an insider. I'm an insider.
Yes, I'm an insider out loud. No, but so. Take C.J. Stroud and his injury off the table. So he's throwing there, which is great news for him and the Texans, and I can't wait to see Stroud in year three, because this is the way and this is the moment where he can make that cheddar. You're three. Mm hmm.
Let's get back to your one. Even though year two ended in the same way as year one right there in the final four of the American Football Conference. So not too bad or shabby in Texas for the Houston Texans. We do have another quarterback being discussed as having something up with his arm. Trevor Lawrence showed up with a sleeve today. Liam Cohen, what's up with the sleeve on your quarterback's arm? Trevor had a sleeve on today.
First time I believe in OTAs. Was there anything going on there? No, I think he just had a little bit of just general soreness. You know, we threw a lot of balls kind of last week and really leaned up into, you know, he feels good. He said he said it wasn't really an issue.
It's more sometimes when you just have something to keep it warm, just helps, you know, any type of thrower. So I think that was more just maintenance than it is anything that's really bothering. The only question is what star general what star general is general soreness to a two star to start? Well, I mean, if it's a five star, the sleeve means something more than the two star general soreness. Right. General soreness, though, definitely more concerning than Colonel Sornus.
Agreed. And you say Sergeant Sornus. Is that a wrestler, Sergeant Sornus?
Yeah, he used to use the NWA TV champion back in the 80s. General Sornus. Yeah. Major soreness. Well, that was an NBC sitcom. Major. Yeah.
No, CBS was major. Gerald McCraney starred in major major soreness. Delta Burke was in major soreness. So she for now Delta Burke. Thanks. Quarterback reps. Let's talk about that.
Yeah, let's talk about that. Cam Ward. How many reps? How we split? Are we still splitting reps in Tennessee? What are we doing? Are we splitting reps in Tennessee?
Brian Callahan, are we splitting reps? I've been pleased with how they've handled the whole operation. And again, this isn't lip service at all. Like Will's done a really nice job over the course of the off season. He's handled it very professionally. He's competed. Cam's done the same, you know, and then Brandon and Tim have done the same things as well. They've all had opportunities. They made the most of those opportunities.
I think all of them have. It's been a good spring, I think, for the quarterbacks in general. That part I feel good about. I'm confident where they're at. You know, Cam's still taking probably more of the reps because he's got more development to go.
He's got more things he's got to get exposed to as a young player. But but they're they're all getting opportunities. And I think the takeaway is that they've all made the most of those chances they've had. And it's been it's been a good process this spring.
Reps are opportunities, guys. OK. Cam Ward's starting week one. We all know it.
The American people know it. Tennessee Titans fans know it. Can you imagine Will Levis gets that start in Denver? Oh, just on camera. Just we're going to let Cam just sit and watch a little bit.
I believe anything. Could that be similar to when remember Tom Savage started week one for Deshaun Watson and Deshaun came in in the second half and then started his first game the next week on the NFL Network. Thursday Night Football debut three days later in Cincinnati and had like a 50 yard run or something. His tight ends were all hurt. Yeah. There was a whole bunch of injuries up front and he scored his first career touchdown running it in from midfield.
Yeah, I'll never forget that. Please don't botch this Tennessee. Well, I mean, to be honest with you, there's lots going on with, you know, Deshaun Watson. Yeah, but I'm saying back then, I was like, what are we doing? Why is he starting week one? Bill O'Brien too, you know, whatever.
But the Bill O'Brien Deshaun Watson era was the zenie, you know, the heydays of Deshaun Watson's career right now. But just talking reps, man. This is what we're talking about. We're talking reps. I can't wait to see what Cam Ward looks like because he's going to start. He's going to be the week one starter and these other guys getting getting the reps right now. That'll be in case of emergency because they're not going to bench, they're just going to go with it.
Yeah. A tight start in Denver, not an easy spot, not an easy start. And then they're home for the Rams. That's a tough, that's a tough go. You know, then a couple of division games. Yeah. And then they're out. They got three in a row on the road at Houston, at Arizona and at Vegas. They're probably going to stay out west, I imagine, in between the October 5th and 12th.
Hmm. And then it's the Mike Vrabel revenge game. What are you going to get? Who's going to be tougher to get a soundbite out of?
Todd Bowles before he takes on the Jets or Vrabel before he takes on the Titans? Yeah. And how about this?
Vrabel will give you something. Yeah. Like I had a nothing but great time there. Whatever. Between the lines about what he's getting.
No, no, no, no. And then and then, you know, fair warning to anybody asking him about it on the Thursday or Friday press conferences or after the game. You get one shot with him. That'll be my prediction there. So the Titans play the Browns in week 14. OK. A Browns question here. Do you think the week 14 starting quarterback is the same as the week one starting quarterback for the Browns for the Browns? Yeah. I would say no. I'd say no to that. Flacco starting week one, week one, four. Can't speak to right now, but it will be a rookie. I don't know.
Let's hear from the rookies when we come back. Oh, how about that? You like that? I see what you did.
Yeah, I like your style. We're teasing. We're teasing. That's on the Rich Eisen show coming up. But here's Rich Akron with a sports update.
Give up to 40 percent your first year. Visit lifelock.com slash podcast for 40 percent off. Terms apply. All right, we haven't done this in a while.
I have eight, oh, eight. SAG-AFTRA residual checks in my hands. No family feud, though, huh? Say it again. No family feud, though. We haven't done that in a while. Well, I mean, Suze returns to the studio.
She will be she'll do the family feud for us morons any time. No, I meant to check. Oh, haven't got one of those yet. No, no, I have not.
At any rate, I've got I've got SAG-AFTRA checks one through eight. One is pink, which means it is international. So I give you the choice to choose, Chris.
One it is. All right. We'll do the international. All right.
Can I have the oh, hit the hit the drop, please. Pay debt to me and his money. Or in the case is his euros. Potentially, I don't know. Do we have to give this answer in euros or? No, these are American dollars. That's a good question.
I mean, American dollars. All right. This is for 22 Jump Street.
Oh, both CSI Miamis. Whoa. Oh, a billions. Wow. And a leather heads in the territories of Germany and Sweden. It sounds like the folks in Germany watched 22 Jump Street. Oh, yes.
The folks in Sweden watched to 22 jump streets. Billions and leather heads. All right. All wrapped up in one check. Chris Brockman, you are first up. I'm going to say twenty three dollars and seventy eight cents. Three seventy eight. TJ, you're going to go next. I'm going to say seven dollars and thirty eight cents. All right.
That's a large range for you to drive through that lane if you wish. I'm going to say twenty three seventy nine. I hate you. Jerk.
The actual check of all of these is nineteen dollars and thirty four cents. TJ Jefferson takes good. Hate you, Felly. Felly, you had a chance to actually win this thing.
All I did is I thought I played well. All right. TJ, you choose another another envelope. Two through eight, sir. Two through eight. Two through eight. Let's go with number. Well, Dr. J is my guy, so let's go with number six. Number six. Number six. Could have taken the middle check. You didn't listen.
Listen, just never listens to me with my strategies. All right. Here we go. I'm just another residual check is for. Oh, I am not reading that one on the air.
I had no idea after midnight paid like that. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, the middle one. Let me what everyone's in the middle. What is it? Number five. Number five. That's weird.
Is that because of the name or the amount on the chin? Wow. OK. Next up. Oh boy. A bunch of odd couples. Three episodes of The Odd Couple.
And there's nine different payments in one. Chris Brockman. Well, shouldn't I go first? Sure, you go first. I'm going to say four dollars and twelve cents. Christopher. Actually, you go last year.
You're up next. I'm going to say 950. Christopher, four dollars, 13 cents, four dollars, 13 cents.
The actual to me, the actual retail check of all of these. We're going to lose. He's going to win this one. Who telly? You'd be correct.
17 dollars. There you go, everybody. After midnight, I still don't know about lunches on me, guys. Hey, now, back here on The Rich Eyes and Show Radio Network, I guess we'll finish this show with and another thing. Here we go, because we talked about it earlier on about another thing. The Cleveland Browns giving their first 11 on 11 rep of their first mandatory mini camp practice to Dylan Gabriel.
And here's the rookie afterwards. Yeah, I think, you know, you'd like to say that you don't change the circumstances. You know, I try to approach every single day like that and control what you can. And that's just being, you know, ultimately your best in that moment.
And the best competitors I've been around have been the best of being present. Oh, OK. OK. I liked him when we talked with him before the draft. He almost went a coaching cliche of control what you can control. But that works. All right, here's Chidor Sanders after the practice.
Chidor? I'm managing it real well. Yeah. Overall, it's a mentality. It's mental. It's a lot of people in certain situations in their own life, you know, that may not be at the forefront that maybe had that at one point in time. But you got to know it's going to be bright days eventually whenever the time comes. So you just always got to be prepared and you got to mentally take it as just experience, you know, for anything in life. You got to go through different things so you can understand the message that, you know, God's trying to give you.
So that's why everything I'm way more grateful for just to come out here, to be able to throw the ball around and just be able to get on the field like everything off the field, it is what it is. But everybody know when it's time to get on that grass, you know, you know who I am. That was his response to getting the last reps. You know, the last reps. Man, he is handling his business. Anybody who thought I don't kid can't catch a break. Anybody who thought that he would not be humble sees this and they've got to be they've got to be humbled by that.
Unless the response is like, guess what? He wouldn't have been that way if they drafted in the first round. You know what I mean? You know that he was humbled by being a fifth round pick. Yeah, it doesn't matter.
It doesn't once people's mind is set there, it's never going to change. Or you could have been just like, I should be getting the first team reps. What's going on? Hashtag legendary. He's not doing that. And he never was going to do that. I mean, who also says the word hashtag? Nobody does. For us growing up, it was a pound sign, right? Right.
Not in twenty twenty five. So there you go. Splitting reps. What are the reps? Who's getting reps? Joe Flacco starting week one.
All things being equal, everyone healthy. Joe Flacco starting week one. Week 14? Don't know the answer to that question.
Don't know the answer to that question. But man, Brown's preseason games are going to be fun to watch. Here we go. Who's getting the start?
How do they all look? Then it's on Stefanski to figure out who stays and who does not. Yeah, they're not going to keep four on the roster. Somebody is going to be practice squatted or not? Yeah. I do not know. That'll wrap it up for this edition of the Rich Eisen Show here on a busy Tuesday. From the San Diegan. Can he finish?
Yes, he can. The U.S. Soccer Podcast. Phone listen on your favorite platform.
