If you were watching online, you would have caught us just jumping to get to the microphones because we were in the middle of talking and all of a sudden we heard the bump in music playing. And so, here we are.

Welcome. We are talking about a very interesting topic. I think it's unique. It is. And it's interesting in the sense of it's nothing that we really thought of.

It just kind of happened. We were saying in the last show that we were texting on Sunday saying, hey, do we have a topic? And Danny said something about being on call. And Grant said, is that the topic?

And I said, yeah, that's the topic. It's about calling. And so, we were talking about where God is calling you right now in your life. Not your eventual calling or what has been your historical calling.

Maybe that's where you are right now and that's the same thing. But what's he calling you to and where is he calling you in your life at this moment? And so, we're going to pick up with Danny who has the first clip of the After Hours. So, Danny, you want to tell us a little bit about your clip? Yeah, thank you for cutting it, Sam.

Oh, you're welcome. So, as predicted, he's stuck on this new movie, right? Well, the interesting part of the clip is Sam actually cut the clip and chose it. And he texted me this morning and said, hey, I cut a clip. And I listened to it like, yeah, I'll use that.

That's the way he's going to use it. And it's from what movie? The World's Fastest Indian. Is that like American native or is it an Indian from India? Motorcycle. It's a motorcycle. Yeah, Indian Motorcycle. Yeah, we had to make that clarification in a week when I used the other clip for it. It's based on a true story where a guy who's played by Anthony Hopkins who has set the world land speed record for motorcycles under a thousand cc's, I think it is. And so, a really cool story, not much about the motorcycles, but more about his journey. And this scene, he's talking to his girlfriend.

And so, he's, I think he's actually trying to explain to her kind of where he's at in life because half people that meet him think he's crazy for what he's doing because he's got this old motorcycle that looks like it's going to fall apart and he's going to break a land speed record with the thing. So, but you can play the clip and we'll talk about it afterwards. Do you think I can do it, Phin? Oh, I don't know, Bet. I don't think it really matters one way or the other. Yeah. You know, I read something once years ago and I learned it off by heart. It was Theodore Roosevelt said it. He said it's not the critic that counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. Yeah.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena. Yeah, I love that quote. It's in another movie we use a lot, but it sounds kind of, kind of, I forgot what the word I used with Anthony Hopkins.

Teddy Roosevelt-ish. Well, with Anthony Hopkins in the Silence of the Lamb kind of thing. Kind of sinister as he says it, but you know, as I thought about this topic, I thought about how, and somebody had said it already that, you know, sometimes you're calling wherever it is in your season of life doesn't make sense to everybody around you. And so that doesn't even make sense to you, but you know this is direction you're supposed to be going. You know, we're kind of in that vein right now with some stuff going on at home, you know, selling a house and moving again and that kind of thing.

And parts of it I'm not sure makes sense, but we really feel like this is the direction we need to go. So, you know, but I thought about Philip in Scripture, in Acts where, you know, they're preaching and people are coming to Christ and all of a sudden he gets a vision to go south and who meets this eunuch. So he leaves. He leaves. A very eunuch.

Let's not go there. Identify too much with Aaron. But he leaves all this. You know, he leaves all this and that's going on. This massive church service or revival, if you will, and just for one guy it seems like, if you read it that way. Doesn't make much sense in the grand scheme of things if you look at it from a number standpoint but this is what God called him to do and he was obedient. And when you look at, I always think of Ananias who had to minister to Paul and, you know, his prayers just crack me up every time I read it. Because he said, Lord, you do know who this guy is, right? I want you to go lay hands on him and pray for him.

He's killed Christians, you know that right? So the things don't make sense on a surface level but God has a plan and a purpose. And that's where trust has to come in. I really like the way his friend handled his question. When he asked her, friend, you know, do you believe in me? She said, I don't know that that really matters. And I think that's a great answer because it doesn't really matter if God's called you to do it. Looking for validation or looking for support from other people is not the answer. It's just following through with what God asked you to do. Darrell Bock Yeah, because it may not be there.

Scott Horrell Right. Darrell Bock Yeah, that's a very important point because the first time Carol and I really knew God had spoken to us and called, everybody in my family, and I think one or two in hers, who, you know, she doesn't talk to a lot of them very often, thought we were crazy and doing something totally insane. We were called to Alaska and I probably told that story so we won't dive into it. But the one place we got complete support was at the Cove with the same group of people that had pretty much been there almost a year before when I kind of wept and was asking, you know, how do we hear from God? And we went back to share that with Henry Blackaby and a lot of his other followers.

And it was complete support there. They were all thrilled that we had heard from God and were going to Alaska. And when we went, we thought we were going permanently. But God didn't tell us that. He just said go.

And the one step at a time is really, I think, an important point we need to get to. Darrell Bock One other thing I would like to point out that I didn't mention earlier about calling that, you know, like what's God calling you to right now, is, you know, these boot camps are only $199, okay? They really are. But the food at this one is involved in my new calling, right? That since I've been pastoring this church, I get a chance to cook Wednesday night. So I've been perfecting my techniques on briskets, on New York strip steaks, on amazing food that is all going to be, it's not going to be something like giantly ca—no, no, no, no. This is going to be like you would eat in your backyard, like real brisket that's going to cook for hours and hours, and ribs if we have them, which I haven't decided completely on the menu. But if those ribs are cooked, they will not be parboiled.

They will not be something weird going on with them. These are going to be real live ribs, like stuff that will make your mouth water. The breakfast, oh my goodness, we have some breakfast that literally will blow your mind from the seven foods of the Promised Land.

All this for $199, it's worth it just for the food, but a lot more. Darrell Bock Are we having that every morning? Dr. Darrell Bock We're having that available every morning, but we've got these amazing, like I've got these French toast sort of casserole things that is done with cream cheese and homemade bread that is really amazing stuff, you know, with the syrup and all that. Dr. Darrell Bock Cream cheese is from the Holy Land? Dr. Darrell Bock Yes, holy cream cheese, very cheesy, and bread made from sourdough yeast and all that.

It's really quite amazing. Dr. Darrell Bock Well, Robby, that would mean that all of our food would be pasteurized, wouldn't it? Dr. Darrell Bock Yeah, it will be pasteurized. Dr. Darrell Bock Pasteurized, yeah.

Dr. Darrell Bock We are looking forward to this, and it's just, you know, something God has, I really, really, really love to cook, and I've really loved it in this season, but I'm just saying this is going to be a really fun boot camp from that standpoint, but a lot more from just what you can meet with God. Dr. Darrell Bock That's a breakfast I could eat every day, so I was happy at that point, but happier now. All right. I was hoping it was Jim. Dr. Darrell Bock Well, it was going to be Jim, but you took the microphone from him.

Oh, it's already you now, so we're good to go. Dr. Darrell Bock All right, okay. So this clip is from The Patriot, and as you guys have heard, I love my country, and I feel like our country – Dr. Darrell Bock Imagine that. Dr. Darrell Bock I feel like our country has not where it started out, and this clip is from The Patriot, kind of gives you an idea of what it was like when the founding – there was these same type of arguments they were having, but Benjamin Martin was in the French and Indian War and had some bad experiences, and he's not ready to just dive back into war, which is understandable, but as they're fighting through this, there's a lot of disagreements on how things should go.

These days, well, they had the same disagreements or similar disagreements. They weren't all singing off the same hymn book back then, and this kind of sets it up, and then I'll talk about kind of why I use this as my clip. Dr. Darrell Bock Because you like it. Dr. Darrell Bock Because I like it, yeah. Dr. Darrell Bock It is one of his favorites. Dr. Darrell Bock It is. Dr. Darrell Bock We've used it not as much as – Dr. Darrell Bock Braveheart. Dr. Darrell Bock Yeah, close.

Here we go. Our first order of business will be an address by Colonel Harry Burwell of the Continental Army. Colonel Burwell. Colonel Burwell You all know why I'm here, not an orator, and I would not try to convince you of the worthiness of our cause.

I'm a soldier, and we are at war. From Philadelphia, we expect a declaration of independence. Eight of the 13 colonies have levied money in support of a Continental Army.

I ask that South Carolina be the ninth. Colonel Burwell Massachusetts and Virginia may be at war, but South Carolina is not. Colonel Burwell This is not a war for the independence of one or two colonies, but for the independence of one nation. Colonel Burwell And, uh, yes, what nation is that? Colonel Burwell An American nation.

Colonel Burwell There is no such nation, and to speak of one is treason. Colonel Burwell We are citizens of an American nation, and our rights are being threatened by a tyrant 3,000 miles away. Colonel Burwell Would you tell me, please, Mr. Howard, why should I trade one tyrant 3,000 miles away for 3,000 tyrants one mile away? Colonel Burwell An elected legislature could trample a man's rights as easily as a king can. Colonel Burwell Captain Martin, I understood you to be a patriot. Colonel Burwell If you mean by patriot, am I angry about taxation without representation? Well, yes, I am. Colonel Burwell Should the American colonies govern themselves independently?

I believe they can, and they should, but if you're asking me, am I willing to go to war with England, well, then the answer is most definitely no. Colonel Burwell So, just 2020, I just really began to feel like God put it on my heart to pray for the country, and I went to D.C. several times before that 2020 election, and just continued to pray throughout it, just became more observant of what was going on in this world, because everything that we do, we sit here, came from those initial freedoms that we have, and I, quite frankly, the way that I see things is we have no problem with taking freedoms away from people these days or government situations or whatever, but my thing is that as a kid, that right there, I was all into some revolutionary war, the founding of our country, our founding fathers, presidents, and all that, and like Robby was talking about, those things that God puts in your heart, he puts them in there for a reason. I don't know why I like that. I mean, I was into baseball and all the stuff like that, too, but that really resonated with me, and I went back in during this time and the history of our country and the founding of it, and a lot of people say, oh, there's separation of church and state. I mean, we use the Bible for a textbook for 320 years of the founding of our nation. If there was truly a fully separation of church and state, you wouldn't have something like that. With that being said, I just have felt like my responsibility – it's not everybody's, it was my responsibility – to be involved in the process, both from prayer and believing God, but just in the political process. I hate politics. I absolutely hate it, but it's the necessary means to keep God's values and what he expressed in his Word for this nation to keep that in the forefront. We vote on our values.

When we vote somebody to represent us, they're going to represent our values, and I want that person to do that right. So anyway, that's one thing that God's really had me involved in or called me to lately. The other one is just a few years ago, probably three or four years ago, it was before my mom passed, I felt God wanted me to reconnect with family members. When I went, I hadn't seen my younger brother in like many years. Me and my older brother went. We kind of reconnected him to the family. Then my niece recently came back. I went and met with some great aunts who are from a large family and kind of were like mothers to my dad. There was a really large family connection, and it kind of just kind of split up. And then I've got cousins on the other side that God's transforming our lives in a mighty way.

And there's a family reunion that got called that was kind of a short notice, but I'm getting ready to go to that. And I just look back and see what God has done. And part of it, he's doing this bigger picture, but I was involved in some of that stuff where I just was obedient, and he called me to do it.

And I'm just amazed and honored that I'm able to be a part of that. And then the third thing real quickly is just health recently. I mean, I'm tired of not feeling well and not really – I mean, Robby, you talked about health and how that's something that we have to fight for. And I begin to realize I've got to do something about it. And these guys haven't seen a big change, but I've lost some weight, and I'm feeling better and expect to go deeper in that.

But I had done the same thing probably 10 years ago and lost like 80 pounds, and I just put it all back on. So God's working in that area too. Darrell Bock I think you've seen the movie, Reagan. Like what a picture of what it is that we're talking about, that when you go watch that movie, it's nothing like I expected it to be. But it certainly takes you back through his life, what he was like, what a boy, the calling that was on his life. And I love what he said when he was a lifeguard, that he studied those currents of the stream. The reason he was able to save so many people's lives from that is that he'd studied the currents.

And from that, he studied the currents of culture and what he saw in communism and the currents of people that really helped essentially break down the Berlin Wall and what we live in today as a result of his calling, which when you really heard it, he kept saying it over and over again in the movie. And I thought it was beautiful, and I wonder if you have something like this in your own life. I know I do in mine. But it was like I just want to make a difference. I just want to make a difference. In my case, I just want to help people. And I was called to that a long time ago.

Yep, same here, absolutely. Thank you, guys. Jim, you actually have the clip we use most frequently with calling. This is the one we saved for last.

And it's an excellent one, and I think what hits me most in this is he feels God's pleasure when he's doing what he loves, which does honor God. And we do know the clip, and we'll jump in there so I can yap more later. Yeah, if they're not familiar with it, it's from the movie Chariots of Fire, which was back in, what, the 80s?

Yeah, those people aren't old enough to be familiar with it anyway. Yeah, Eric Liddell, I think, is that it? Yeah.

And it's based on a true story. So here we go. I've decided. I'm going back to China.

The Missioner Service have accepted me. Oh, I'm so pleased. Well, I've got a lot of running to do first, but, Jenny, Jenny, you've got to understand, I believe that God made me for a purpose, for China, but he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure. To get it up would be to hold him in contempt.

You were right. It's not just fun. To win is to honor him. Jenny, Jenny, I've got my degree to get. I've got all that work, and then there's Paris, the Olympic Games. It's just not enough for me. I'm asking you to manage the mission on your own. Till then, will you do that for me, Jenny?

He might have said Jenny more than Forrest did, but we won't count. One of the things that really grabbed me in this is that he is doing something we'd consider secular rather than going to the mission field, and while it is wonderful to go into ministry, I ended up in it through a love of science and math and history. Robby, never selling cars, he never expected to be in ministry, but God often wants to prepare us for our future callings by sending us into other things. One thing I thought about during this was my love of war games, and I loved the military. I expected to be in the military, but my grandfather was in World War I and the very first anti-aircraft battalion. My father helped men's soldiers and sailors' teeth because he was a dentist when he was in World War II, and that's where he met my mother, and I always had a fascination with warfare, and I saw that out in playing games. I was a, well, actually I was a national champion in a few things related to war games, several war games, and met a lot of really neat and many brilliant people there, expanded things, but I was never that warrior I thought I was going to be. Fast forward 40 years, I'm now a warrior, but I have the purpose and the knowledge that what I am fighting isn't against people, isn't for any cause other than Christ, and that's a glorious place to be, and one of the things that was mentioned is sometimes our calling is for life, but my life's getting shorter, and God is calling me more and more to just individual actions in the last two weeks. I've had three things that I clearly heard Him tell me to do, and now He is going to be moving me to the next calling, and it has really become more important for me to follow Him day by day than in any long-term commitment, and as somebody that had 50 jobs or more over most of my life, usually three years or less, the only two I stuck with are like Robby or those helping people, being an assisting pastor, being a school teacher, and that was of kids that they were basically the last place they could go before getting totally thrown out of school and serving in that community. I don't think I'd have made it as a teacher in any other area, but that's where God placed me for six-and-a-half years. Dr. Darrell Bock Well, good. Well, thank you, guys.

We've got a couple more minutes. What thoughts do you have on the topic that we haven't covered, anything that you want to add? What if someone's saying, you know, I really just don't know what my calling is.

I'm just completely perplexed. What's a good starting place? Dr. Darrell Bock I'll sort of go back to those three ways that you navigate with number one, and I think the whole Christian life is about developing your desires, those things you naturally wanted to do when you were a kid, the things you naturally feel, and then once you start with that, then you go, where do you feel God's pleasure? When you do, whatever that is, it's validation, and then the thing that Andy pointed out is risk, right? Like, and I think Henry Blackby was the one that said that if you think you can do what it is that God's calling you to do, he's probably not calling you because it always is going to be risky, you're going to have to need him in order to walk into that, whatever that may be, and so, like, when you look at the size of the project, God likes big ones. Dr. Darrell Bock Mm-hmm, absolutely.

Andy? Dr. Darrell Bock I think sometimes the confusion gets to be where when somebody says, what's God calling you to do, instantly we think of, I'm going to be a pastor or a missionary or something like that, but God has designed us with different skill sets, and I think it's just as much a calling for a police officer to be right in the center of God's will, because if we ain't careful, the journey, real quick, when Michelle decided she was going to become a school teacher, it was something, I didn't see the numbers making it, and I still, if I go back and look at her budget at that time, I still don't know how we did what we did, but God did it, and that was her calling, that was her calling at that season of her life, and she got some pushback, and I won't ever forget that, well, what are you doing for God? She said, well, I think this is what God's having me to do. Yeah, but what are you doing for God? Because it didn't have a Jesus sticker on it, and I think we have to be careful with that. Does that make sense?

It does. Well, just the movie that we're talking about, Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell, however you say his name, did some amazing things in the mission field. His ending wasn't glorious, but it was, but it was not a happy ending, so to speak, but the movie would have never been made if that's the only thing that he did.

The movie was made because he followed his desires, he followed God's obedience, and he ran in the Olympics, and refused to run on a Sunday when they were having his event, and did some things that brought attention to him, and because of that, generations to follow know the story, right, enough to look him up on Google and find out the rest of it.
