This is the Truth Network. Coming to you from an entrenched barricade deep in the heart of central North Carolina, Masculine Journey After Hours, a time to go deeper and be more transparent on the topic covered on this week's broadcast.
So sit back and join us on this adventure. The Masculine Journey After Hours starts here, now. Welcome to Masculine Journey After Hours. We are talking about a very interesting topic today. I think they're all interesting, but I'm kind of biased.
You know, but Darren, i it's your topic. If you just want to share for a second what that is.
Well, I teasingly put in our chat group hide and go seek.
Okay. Right? Because we tend to hide. Our glory that God has put in us. And, you know, we call it our glory.
It's really His that He put in, but it's the glory that He gave. U, Sam, Main. Particularly, or Robby Dilmore, or Jim Graham, or Harold, or Andy, or Art, or whomever. Which is a little different than What he gave me. Right.
I mean, he gave me the flu, evidently. But, um. That tends to get Attacked. Robby talked about that in the last show. If you're just now tuning in, go back to the last show.
Robby talked about that very well, that it that your glory is known by God, and it's pretty well known by the enemy from almost day one of your life. And the enemy is not going to let you go. Unattacked because every time he sees the glory of God rise up in you, he's going to attack that glory. He doesn't really care about you as Rob. Pointed out, he cares more about hating God.
And so any time any of us reflect God's glory. That gets attacked.
Well, it gets attacked enough, you stop shining. You know, you put it under a bushel. You put it under a bushel. Yeah. You hide it down in a valley.
You do all sorts of things. But you do not let it shine before the world. And so that's kind of what we're talking about: it's not a sense of false humility. We're not encouraging people to, oh, yeah, I suppose God did something for me. And It does feel arrogant sometimes to say, no, this is the gift that God has given me, and I'm going to walk that out in my life.
because again, the enemy is going to attack that and oftentimes he's going to attack it through people who are going to go, Wow, that's awfully arrogant of you, very presumptuous of you to believe that, you know, and that sort of thing. And so Trying to find the line between false humility and arrogance is difficult. But that's what we're shooting for.
Well, thank you. We're going to go through a few clips. We have three more clips to get through. But before we do that, I want to ask a question to the group. How can people If they just don't really know.
The glory that God put in them. How can you help them find that? Or how can you know that about yourself? Like if a person's sitting out there going, I have no clue. What that really is because it feels arrogant.
I don't want to feel presumptuous. you know, how would you answer that? You know, for me, I would say Partly How do others react? and feel loved by you. Right, that's one of the big ones.
That even though you might have been hurt lots of times doing that, it doesn't mean you're not supposed to be that way. Right, it just means that you got hurt. And maybe God's still calling you to be that way. And so sometimes it's off of how others are impacted by it. And sometimes it's the opposite, I would believe.
Go ahead, Robby. No, I was just going to say what we at Bootcamp, you know, we do the new name talk for this very purpose. And the best possible person to ask is God, right? The Holy Spirit, you know, to say, what do you call me? And within your identity, what he calls you, you know, we've seen it time and time and time at boot camp.
People say, well, this is what I heard, but I don't believe, you know, that's not it. And there comes the false humility right on top of it that's saying, no, that can't really be me. But actually what we find time and time and time again is, oh, oh, hang on to that because when you said you don't believe it, now begin to ask yourself, okay, if that is my glory, which Happened to me. I thought God called me faithful. I thought it was some kind of joke.
Here, boy. Here, boy. You're faithful. And uh old Robby. He's a guy.
I said, well. You know Where is that? What is that? And again, to ask the second question: what is my name? and then show me how I actually M that and he he responded very quickly to me.
He said, You know, Robby, who's the one who never quit a job? Who never cheated on one girlfriend, never cheated on a wife, you know, who has been faithful, who doesn't show up late? Who, when he tells somebody he's going to do something, does something. Is that sound like you? Does that sound faithful to you?
You know? And and as I began to walk through that, I went, oh my, you know, what fun It has been And one of the greatest things that I got out of this ministry was beginning to walk into that identity, which I know is something that is my reflection of God. Because if there's anybody that's faithful, it's obviously him. And if I can reflect that in any way, how fun. And, you know, at first, it didn't sound good at all.
And one of the other ways to find that out, Robby, you've figured this out too very quickly.
So how is that attacked?
So if you look at all the attacks you've had in your life, Right. If you've been attacked With disloyalty, if you've been attacked, whatever it is. If you look at all the wounds you've taken, all the attacks you've taken in your life, fiery arrows is what Scripture calls them. But if you take all of that, And look at the opposite of that.
Okay, what has been the effect of that warfare? What's been the effect of that wound? What was it trying to get you to not. Do? To whose advantage was it that you believed?
Right, what is your enemy afraid of? Yeah. What is he afraid of? And again, what's the point of attack? Which is.
What came at that new name talk, that particular day that you guys gave the talk, and it moved, it honed right in on how God showed me and walked with me to open up that treasure chest of it's his glory. You know, but how cool we get to bear it. When I was you guys were talking about it, I was thinking um one of the most impactful examples of that for me was our friend Josh, who passed way too soon. You know, when when he heard God call him leader and he felt like he'd never been that. But then he when he began to believe God and changed his whole family.
You know, that you can't You can't step into God's glory that He has in you without impacting others in a positive way. It's not just doing it for yourself, it's a ripple effect that's amazing. You know, and so just it's not a obligation, it's an honor. Right to go do the And we were at his funeral. Yeah.
And his parents came up to us. and went on to describe How he became the leader and what an impact it made in the last years of his life. And what they actually said to us is: as sad as this event is, I can't imagine how much sadder it would have been had Josh not come to a boot camp. And again, it was God who orchestrated it all, but through the gifts he gave us. Absolutely.
Well, Jim, you have the uh Andy, did you want to say something? I'm sorry. Oh, go ahead. I'll do that later. You sure?
Well, you remember? No, yeah, I'm good. I got the scripture pulled up. Good. Anyway, hey, uh Jim, you had to go to the bottom of the bus.
I thought we just fell back on scripture when we ran out of everything else. Yeah, we gotta get to it sometime.
Okay. Mine is probably the most depressing of the clips, but also for me one of the most uplifting ones. This is about John, who's a convicted murderer of a young child, and he's going to death row. Where We're going to call him Boss because I can't even think of the actor's name now, even though everybody knows it. Tom Hank it to me this is Tom Hank's probably best performance and best movie and a lot of folks will argue that and that's okay.
But This is a close to the final scene. And the murdering Fella, John, that we hear talking is nothing like. everyone assumed when he came in, and only one continued with that and that didn't fare well for him. But John is seems very simple, but he is one of the wisest. people in the movie and would have a lot of competition in the world for that with what is learned from him.
But simple man with a very deep wisdom and you're gonna Hear some of that sadly, as this is one of the last talks before they execute him for the murder. He didn't do. And and the the weird part about it is, you know, he's accused of this thing that he did to people and and what he actually is gifting is to remove pain. from people. And so, what we're hearing is the conversation.
That's why boss is conflicted. Yeah, did you mention the movie name? I don't know if you're not. I did. Green Miles.
Yeah, so it's almost like a perfect example of what we were just talking about. He was being attacked at the point of his glory. Right. And his. Statement that got him convicted was, I couldn't help.
I couldn't help. And that's what he was trying to do, but they took that as I I couldn't help but do this.
So here we go. Joe. I have to ask you something very important now. I know what you're gonna say. You don't have to say it.
No, I do. I do, I have to say it. Yeah. Tell me what you want me to do. You want me to take you out of here?
Huh? Just let you run away? See how far you could get. Why would you do such a foolish thing? On the day of my judgment.
When I stand before God. And he asks me why. Did I? Did I kill one of his true? Uh miracles.
Um What am I going to say? Then it was my job. One for my job. You tell God the Father it was a kindness you done. I know you heard me well.
I can feel it on you. But you ought to quit on it now. I want it to be over and done with. I do. I'm tired, boss.
I'm tired of being on the road, lonely as a spell in the rain. I'm tired of never having me a buddy to be with to tell me where we're going. to coming from or why mostly I'm tired of people being Ugly treater. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear no. World every day.
There's too much of it. Part of John's glory, in fact, the biggest part of it. as he feels the pain of others. and to a much lesser extent I that's one I identify with. And I usually Cover that up with humor, with avoiding difficult situations.
My life has been by anybody's definition very blessed. At three wonderful children, three wonderful grandchildren, all of whom are doing quite well both with God and with the world. One minor exception, but he's working we're working on him. But it's Not my doing, it's God's. And when I am beating myself up like I did on uh my buddy over here, Darren's clip.
I was a middle school science teacher alike. That hero added. One of your 40 jobs.
Well, 40 is very low estimate. Don't ever ask Jim to give you his resume. Did they ever tell you about being about the call? His calling. Yeah, just like.
Or limit it and put a cap on it. But the. And most b folks think I'm making things up when I start rambling off the different things I've done. But that was one of the most successful ones. And for me it was I've got nothing left I can do.
And education was something I pursued, but I pursued having fun more than education. And that takes a toll on success in that field. But I didn't get a PhD. But when I was in high school, I assumed I was going to get a PhD. in chemistry, and none of that worked out.
Though I still love chemistry, I love God more and that's what He used all this to get me to, where I can show that glory. And this This clip, though it's a really sad situation, John has done what he was supposed to do. And now he's going home. And that's. what I want to be able to say at the end here.
Well, thank you, Jim. We go from an amazing Tom Hanks movie to Andy's clip. We call this Sam's favorite.
So before I get into the clip, just This is pretty cool because I hadn't really seen this before until tonight. I've been in the boot camps. I spoke about the new name at Robby's church this weekend. I mean, I love that idea of the new name being really the essence of God calling that out in you. He may use other people, or he may speak to you directly, but You get that new name, that new identity, and a lot of times it's tied to your glory and how you've hit it or how you weren't even aware of it, really.
But. When I I got serious with God in my twenties, my mom gave me a God's Promises book, you know, help me learn Scripture. And I still Pulled it. I don't remember all the scripture that I learned during that time as much as I would like, but. You know, one of the scriptures was, let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, which is in heaven, which is right after the bushel scripture.
But I always saw that, and I would just focus in on the good works. Right, do whatever, you know, whatever you do, go out there and do it for the glory of God and all. But I really, you, we just blow past this, but now in the context of understanding glory and how it's unique to each one of us, I mean, we carry the light of God, is what it says here. You know, we're created in His image and we have this glory. It says, Let your light didn't say for me to let Sam's light or Robby's light or Darren's or whatever.
It doesn't say that, it says, Let your light so shine before men. And that was just pretty cool to see that because. You know, if anybody's questioning, oh, are you pulling out some concept from scripture that. We don't have anything to support it. That right there supports it.
That we carry a glory of God.
So. Yeah, we yes, we do.
Well, thank you. You want to talk about your clip? Yeah. Well, I want to. Got a clip?
Are you taking a breath?
Okay, let's go get it.
So, my clip is from Forrest Gump, Sam's favorite movie. Yeah. But this one is. since Forrest was habitual A glory caller. I mean, he looked and saw the best in everybody.
Jenny, his girl he grew up with, he ended up marrying, but had a really rough past, and he always saw the good in her despite what was going on and loved her. And then there was Bubba, his friend, that got killed in the army, and then Lieutenant Dan, who he actually saved, who Lieutenant Dan felt like his purpose in life was to die in war. All his other family had done that. And. Forrest wouldn't let it go with that.
I mean, he saved him and he gave him the dignity. He saw the leadership in Lieutenant Dan. He didn't give up on Lieutenant Dan when Lieutenant Dan gave up on himself and just wanted to die, and he wouldn't let him do it. And this is just a. Short clip.
think it's after he's saved and before they really get into the story where they have a past even after this where it's forced kind of leads them into business and some other stuff. But this is just a conversation between them and and it's nothing really around glory, but it gives you an an idea of just wow For what he feels about him.
Okay, here we go. Did you hear what I said? You cheated me! I had a destiny. I was supposed to die in the field with honor.
That was my destiny, and you Cheated me out of it! Is she Do you understand what I'm saying, gum? This wasn't supposed to happen. Not to me. I had a destiny.
I was Lieutenant. Dan Taylor. You still. The tenant damn. Amazing.
That's anticlimactic. There was that. He's kind of stated the obvious, but really, that's the way he saw him. I mean, Dan felt like if he didn't die in battle, he wasn't Lieutenant Dan. I mean, his identity, his glory, he didn't live up to it.
The Force was saying, like, no, you're still the guy. Whether you're alive or dead, you're still the guy. You still carry that glory, dead or alive. No, you're absolutely right. It does show that well that he's just saying, hey, it doesn't matter.
I mean, it matters. You're messing your legs. It doesn't change who you are. The essence of who you are. And why you were made.
Right. Right, absolutely. Just looking at you guys, you're all staring back at me. It's like, I don't know.
Well, I've got a question for everybody.
Okay. I'm worried I'm schizophrenic. Oh, you are. That's a good question. I haven't asked you yet.
A good start. If I'm in a therapy, how many guys have gotten multiple names from God? Yeah, all of us. I'm up to five, but I haven't, I mean, I know the primary ones for Most of you, but... Is it Jim, Jim Bob, Jim Bo?
Big Jim, Jimmy Crown. I forgot Giacobo, which my father liked to call me at times.
Well, my first one was. one that I had heard a fair amount from people that were that liked me. And when God said that was it, I said, Well, no, I don't I That's my brain working. That's not you, God, but he insisted. And that was Gentle Giant.
And I'm big, and I try my best to be kind and loving. And some people picked up on that and I heard a fair amount growing up. Mm-hmm. But some others are weird, and you guys do know all of my. Yeah.
Yeah. We won't want to break into resonancing. We're not going to do anything else with that. I have the final clip, and then we'll wrap up with some more of Jim's names. But this is from Bagger Vance.
We've used this clip before in different times. And the reason I wanted to play it later on, you know, Jim had a new clip. Darren had a new clip. Robby had a new clip. Andy and I didn't just recycled.
Andy's was somewhat new. He thinks it's new. We don't think it is. It's new to me. Yeah, it's new to him.
Like he's never been here before. But still, it wasn't in the folder. My clip is from Bagger Vance. And what you have here is you have Juna, who was a great golfer in his youth, and then he went off to war and some horrible things happened, and he lost all sorts of faith in himself. And he heard the things the enemy was saying.
Not as much what people were saying, but what the enemy had let him. To believe. And so God has awakened in him a little earlier this thing about playing golf again. And so he goes out at night and he's hitting some golf balls and somebody comes walking up on him and the guy's name's Bagger and we'll play it from there. Who's that?
Just me. Just a man trying to find somewhere to rest his tired feet. Taking in some of God's glories. My, what a night. I could have killed you out there.
Oh, no, sir. See, I set myself directly in front of you. Judging by how you was hitting them balls, I figured that's where I'd be out of harm's way. Excuse me, sir. They say you can tell a plant by its grip.
Yeah, I always felt a man's grip on his club just like a man's grip on his whirl. Look, is that something you want? Five dollars guaranteed. Guarantee for what? Where's a?
Big match coming up, Mr. Jones, Mr. Hagen. A fella gonna beat Nina Caddy. You're a caddy.
Well, it depends. You're a golfer? Uh-huh. I don't need a caddy. I'm not playing.
I don't even play anymore at all. Ah. Don't make no sense is all that. Man say he don't play no golf. Yet he's out here this shady night hitting balls off in the dark where he can't even see them.
Yeah, well, I've done things that made less sense. As we all have. For five hours guaranteed, I'm offering you McCaddy's services. Uh For five dollars. You know, the winner gets $10,000, the cat is cut as 10% of that, so that's $1,000.
I take $5 guaranteed. You don't want $1,000? You done already said you ain't even playing. Lord knows how awful you're gonna look if you do.
So, $5 guaranteed sounds pretty good from where I'm sitting. Mm. Yeah. To find your swing. What'd you say?
Well, you lost your swing. We got to go find it.
Now somewhere in the harmony of all it is. Mm. All it was. Ugh. Oof.
Oh, that will be. I ain't seen a man hit a ball like that since the North-South Championship 1916. Bagavan's the name. And that, they say, is how Bag of Ants became Juna's caddy. What I loved about that clip is The playfulness.
Of bagger, which you know, we equate that to the Holy Spirit, to the Jesus character, that he knows Junah better than Junah knows himself. And it causes him to question. You know, are you a caddie? Depends. Are you a golfer?
You know, and so he has to ask himself those questions, and he challenges them in other ways. You know, like saying, you're going to be an embarrassment. You know, and so he's really starting to get that going again, that juice flowing. He's negotiating the price to get him to say, they get in negotiation just to get him to say, well, well, you said you weren't even in the tournament, right? Yeah, absolutely.
You know what I heard? I've never heard in that clip. It's at the very, very beginning, he says, I'm out here taking in God's glory. In other words, Junior was Hmm. Good thing we used that clip.
Yeah, yeah, that's what I mean.
Well, if you think about it, it's really the whole idea of the movie. Yeah, yeah, right. He's going after his glory. June is trying to find his swing back, which anybody that is trying to walk in God's glory is about trying to find your swing. And obviously, his was attacked, as you'll see if you watch the movie, which, oh my goodness, what a movie it is, and you know, coming back out of that attack.
Yeah, what I loved about that movie as well, it's during Depression era, and so it's a really tough time for everybody. But Junah, being led into his glory, awakes the glory of the whole city that he lives in, and everybody has energy and has healing. Exactly. But if you want to talk to any one of us through email, just send it to like jim at masculinejourney.org or jim at masculinejourney.org. Or even Jim.
