So, no matter where you're starting from, you can move forward with confidence. The key to being rich is knowing what counts. Let's find your rich, Edward Jones Member SIPC. Welcome to the jungle. A very good Tuesday to you.

My name is Jim Rome, and I am on Westwood One and SiriusXM and on our Rome TV channel and on our YouTube channel.

So why don't you head on over there, hit that sub button. Ring the bell and then jump up into chat. Hey, listen! Program brought to you always by FanDuel. My thanks to our pals at FanDuel.

We will have our FanDuel segment coming up on Thursday, but in the meantime, a very special thank you to them. All right, big show for you today. Lots to get to quickly. By now, you probably know, but there are lots of different ways to engage. You can start with the phones.

The phones have made a major comeback of late. Love to see that. One eight zero zero six three six eight six Six eight six, jump up in here. We are open phones to start. You can hit me up on X at Jim Rome.

You can email me at Rome or me at HaveTake dot com or hey chat. What's up, chat? Chat. The streak ended yesterday. You finally made it back in.

So if you want to participate via chat, go ahead. Got a couple of very nice interviews for you coming up later on. Twelve forty. In fact, Derek Carr, former NFLer and a special advisor to UCLA football, joins us. Twelve forty.

Coming up at two twenty. Hour number three. Former MLBer Ryan Spilberg joins us ahead of the World Series. It's now set. We've got our matchup, and I want to get into that as well.

Sorry, chat. We're talking baseball. Not only that, but pretty nice matchup. I like the matchup. Not only are we talking baseball with Spilly, I've got thoughts on the matchup that I'll get to before.

So we're talking lots of baseball. Depends on who you ask. It's either an intriguing matchup if you look at these things, or if you just decide, eh. Couple of small market teams don't really care. Worst matchup ever.

Listen, how can it be both things? If it's the evil empire Dodgers, then it's so bad. But if it's not the Dodgers, then it's so bad. What do you want? What do you want?

I thought the Dodgers were ruining baseball, and that's why there's a so-called lockout coming up. Oh, they're not in. But let's lock everybody out anyway, and it's the Brewers and the Rays that are ruining baseball. Make any of that make sense? All right.

So, like it or not, we're talking baseball. Looking at you, Chat. We will talk baseball, but not before we talk football. I I want to start today by saying that this is going to hurt me a hell of a lot more than it's going to hurt you, Commander Fan. Because unlike you, Commander Fan, I like Dan Quinn.

In fact, I really like Dan Quinn, and I really don't look forward to coming in here every single week and talking about another impossible to believe Dan Quinn moment. Yet, unfortunately, for the second week in a row, my guy leaves me absolutely no choice. Again, my brother, really. Another humiliating viral incident. It's been like seven seconds since the last one.

Coaches can go their entire careers without ever doing anything like this, like ever. Yet my man pulls it off nearly every single week. The commanders decide to go for it on fourth and two in their second quarter, and their dopey alleged franchise QB just throws the ball away, throws the ball out of bounds for no reason, and then to top it off, and again threw it away on fourth and two. To top that off, Dan Quinn gets caught on national TV mouthing field goal. Field goal.

Ah, it's first down. A bleep. At least that's what it seems like. If you can read lips, or at least that's certainly what it seemed like. It looks like all the amateur lip readers came up with the exact same thing, which apparently would include my guy Jason McCourty, because he straight up called Dan Quinn out for it during the ESPN halftime show.

This is a fourth down situation. Jaden Daniels scrambles. For one, he throws the ball away. It's fourth down. Even if it's a penalty on the defense, throw it away.

Now, Dan Quinn, right now, he's calling for a field goal. Field goal, and he gets on. He goes. Oh wait, it's not fourth down. We can't go field goal.

Oh, and those are the situations that you just can't have for a football team. I mean, all of that is certainly what it looked like to me too. And millions of people watching at home, and millions more seeing that clip all over social media. It looked like there was confusion over the down. It looked like DQ wanted to kick field goal and was surprised to find out that it wasn't his ball.

It was first down and Niner ball. And just like Jason McCourty says right there, those are the situations that you simply cannot have for a football team. You know, kind of like letting time run out instead of kicking a game-winning field goal because nobody has any idea about the clock. You know, like the week before, situations that you cannot have yet, situations that they seem to have almost every single week. You can try to say the commanders did come out and then have a great second half and nearly came all the way back for the win, except that they didn't win.

And when you factor in that fourth and two debacle, you realize that if they took those three points, the entire commanders' end of the game strategy would have been different because they would have only been down three instead of six at that point.

So no matter how you slice. That fourth and two in the second quarter, and the subsequent confusion wound up being the defining play in that game for Washington. And once again, for the second week in a row, the defining play of that game is a completely humiliating viral blunder.

Now, this is not to say that Jaden Daniels is completely off the hook, or even a little off the hook. Because throwing it out of bounds on fourth and two makes less than no sense, and any alleged franchise QB should know that. Just like any alleged franchise QB should be aware of the clock and the game situation, because typically franchise QBs have some semblance of situational awareness, but apparently not this one. Either on or off the field. By the way, even if he had them in the NFC Championship game, more on that in a minute.

I mean, like as bad as the alleged franchise QB throwing it out of bounds on fourth and two is, it's still not as bad as the head coach being confused about the down. Especially this head coach, after what happened last week. Of course, I'm willing to hear the dude out, though. I mean, he is Dan Quinn. He is an NFL head coach.

He must have an explanation. DQ. What was going through your mind in that situation? No, I definitely knew it was fourth down. We were going for it, and I was.

I think it went up. You're referring to? I was probably saying like, with the illegal shift, there's not a penalty to go for a field goal. Like it doesn't go like it's the turn on downs. Like I think somebody asked me, what?

Yeah, I can't say that that was the most convincing thing that I've ever heard in my life. Like, oh, why don't you just say so? Or exactly what did you say? That cleared everything up, or nothing at all. In fact, it might have been the least convincing thing I've heard since, well, Garrett Cole or Jim Harbaugh last week, or Miss Teen South Carolina.

I personally believe, I personally believe, Dan, that. I still don't have any idea what the hell you were thinking. I personally believe, Dan, we're gonna need a lot better explanation than that. The real problem for Dan Quinn is, even if you take his word for it, it's still a terrible look. His QB still showed absolutely no situational awareness.

Again, throwing the ball away on fourth down, and then the head coach being confused about whether the Niners would decline the penalty and take the ball was only a small step up from being confused what down it actually was. Again. I personally believe I am gonna need a lot more clarity than that, and a much better explanation than that. Of course, the Niners were taking the ball. Of course, when you turn it over on downs, that means it's first down for the other team.

Of course, you no longer get to kick the field goal.

So that explanation really didn't make anybody feel any better at all. I barely even understood it. I had to watch it like ten times to make sense of it.

Now credit to the Niners, though I didn't forget about you, Frisco fan. I have to. I have to give you your bleeping credit for getting to six and zero because, like, six and zero is six and zero, Frisco fan. Even if the Niners were straight ass in the second half, and something tells me, Frisco fan, that that had everything to do with Mike Evans getting hurt, and wasn't that the biggest fear? I mean, they're all going to get hurt.

They play for Frisco. But what we were most concerned about was Mike Evans getting hurt, because he's Mike Evans, and he's thirty three, and he was balling. All right, so he's got an Achilles situation. We knew that coming in. We knew it to week practice, and then he went out and he got hurt again.

So the Achilles, the good news is, is still intact. A Frisco fan, you better pray that it stays that way. Personally, I would not be in any hurry, nor taking any unnecessary risks in putting him back out there in the short term or anytime soon. In other words, don't go Philadelphia Eagle on this guy. Problem with that is the Niners' offense without Evans suddenly looked like a completely different, much crappier offense.

Brock Purdy and Evans were absolutely cooking in the first half last night. Brock looked every bit the part of the MVP candidate that he is, but as soon as Evans was out of that game, it all went to crap. Case in point, the three hundred and three yards of offense that Frisco had in the first half compared to the just seventy two seventy two that they had the entire second half. A second half in which Frisco. Only got three first downs, none of which came in the fourth quarter.

The Niners had three straight three and outs in their three fourth quarter drives. That's how you nearly gag away a twenty three three lead, and not very promising moving forward if you don't have this guy.

Now the good news is, and the bottom line, Frisco did not gag it away, and Frisco did get to six and zero. And all anybody is talking about today is the latest Dan Quinn fiasco, and understandably so. And again, I'm not going to let Jane Daniels off the hook either. Not at all. Micah Parsons is still right.

That dude is going to get Dan Quinn fired. Jane Daniels probably cost my man Dan Quinn his job. To be honest with you, what does that mean? You normally are not honest with us, Michael. It's almost like Jaden can't believe that last week didn't get the job done, so he had to go out there and do something crazy again this week to ensure that it would happen.

Except as we speak, DQ is still employed. Truth is, Jaden is going to be around in the district long after DQ is gone. And meanwhile, DQ could be run any second, right? Because the guy just seems like he's out of ideas and he's out of answers. Like you know, DQ is digging deep for solutions when he resorts to the unthinkable.

The unthinkable. He spun his lid around. What? Who is that dude? And even that didn't work.

Did you notice DQ wearing his hat forward last night? It's as if he was trying to say new look. New Dan, the old laid-back, chill Dan is dead. This new Dan is all about business, all about being up on the details. Yeah, not so much.

If you're spinning the hat around and that doesn't even work, what more can you really do?

Well, he did take it off altogether. We saw that when addressing the press, and that didn't really change anything either. I mean, I hate to say it. But this train has already derailed, and you can't help but wonder how this coach and this QB, who's never going to split the atom, by the way, the QB, ever had them in the NFC Championship game in the first place. I mean, did that really even happen?

Were they really even in the NFC Championship game a couple of years back, or tin foil us? Was that just filmed in some random warehouse somewhere? And are Kooks going to start following Quinn around, calling him a coward, a liar, and a thief? A liar and a thief. Before he cold cocks one of them.

And a thief. Were they really in the NFC Championship game? Kook. Really.

Somehow, some way, but they don't look anything like that right now. And Frisco, you made it to six and zero, but you are banged up again. Don't want to peek too early, Frisco fan. Frisco fan, six zero was awesome, but it is a seventeen game season. Plenty of time between now and then for every one of your guys to get hurt because they all seem to.

Damn, Mike Evans. I mean, I can you believe? Look, yes, Hall of Famer we know, but isn't amazing how different that defense looked with him and then without him?

So we can hit on that one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six. Other things to talk about. Major League Baseball ALCS, Seatown. I'm not here to pile on. I'm here to give the Rays credit.

They earned it. I personally, I personally believe. It's a pretty intriguing matchup in the World Series. A couple of smaller market teams, but extremely well-run organizations. Extremely well-run.

And for all of you that want to say the Dodgers ruined baseball, and that's why they're going to have a lockout so they can get a cap to manage costs and ensure it parity. How to explain this? By the way, Milwaukee. Is really good every single year. These were the two best teams in the respective leagues.

But yeah, go ahead and say that we're going to lock everybody out because of the Dodgers. Yeah, well, the Dodgers didn't make it. Milwaukee went right through L.A. Man, are you sheep buying this? It's not because of the Dodgers.

So enjoy the World Series that you're hating on already, because there's not going to be any baseball for a long time after that, and it will not be the Dodgers' fault. It will be the owners who want a salary cap. Do you understand? The thing we didn't get to yesterday because there was so much other stuff to get to was the weekend there was in college football, and I want to isolate and really talk about the Longhorn situation and Arch Manning. Why is Arch not getting better?

Why is Arch melting down at the worst possible times? Why is Arch losing reps this week? And if his last name were anything other than Manning, would he already be benched? And then what's going to happen, Arch? We know he's not ready for the NFL, right?

And never mind this nonsense about the first pick overall. We know he's not ready for the NFL. But what if he doesn't get this thing turned around? Where does that leave him? Where does that leave them?

Would he actually consider hitting the portal? I want to get into all that, and it's not just Texas. I'm not just talking about Texas. There were plenty of other monsters that went down this past weekend that I want to get to. One eight hundred six three six eight six eight six.

Let's see. We got here some reaction. Fill in South Carolina. Yeah, it just didn't refresh. And as expected, you saw Terry McLaurin go off last night, right?

Never a good sign when a player leaves the field in an air cast.

So we knew something was really bad, according to at NFL the official account. Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin suffers torn patella tendon, out for the year. From bad to worse to disastrous. I don't know. Maybe they can go get Brandon Ayuk now.

I mean, he and the quarterback were good, right?

Well, until he roasted the quarterback. Man, poor Terry. Terry, hate to see that.

So that, Justin. It, if you want to talk about Jalen Hurts, there's an update there too. The NFL. An anonymous person has told the athletic that the Eagles did nothing wrong. The medical staff did nothing wrong, and they're clear.

The NFL has already come to the conclusion that was a pretty lengthy investigation that took all of five seconds. Let me ask you something, NFL. If you've already concluded that there was nothing wrong. That they did nothing wrong, and it took you five seconds. Then why is it that an anonymous source is telling the Athletic that?

Why don't you put your name on that and stand up and let everybody know? Why it's all cool and why it's good and why a guy that had a blood clot and was told to not go to sleep and was hospitalized the night before and was allowed to play the very next day, then got hurt and then got home and found out that that superficial clot in his calf had traveled to his lungs and there were multiple clots, but nothing was wrong. But an anonymous source from the league told that to the Athletic already. They've already concluded that. Not sketch, not sus.

And if there's nothing wrong, why does somebody not put their name to it and stand up and explain exactly what happened and answer all the questions? Because the whole thing is so convoluted. One eight hundred six three six eight six eight six. This guy beat me to it. Let's go to the chat.

It's in Mister Jingles Double O Seven. Jed Pork suspension is over, and the team is six and O. Go back to the trailer park so the team can go twelve and O. I don't know that they're six and O because Pork was trying to pork. I think it's a coincidence, but he is back.

The suspension is up, and one more from chat. Mystic ninety two starting to think DQ can't manage a DQ. I think he could. Quote book ninety six fifty DQ is soft serve. It's a very very unfortunate set of initials, isn't it?

Here's another one. DQ serving humble pie and fire coach chiefs. I didn't know DQ served word salad. Wojo in SC. Coach like less of an East LA DQ and more like a Northwoods DQ.

Yeah, it's not going too well, is it? And finally, at the Sterling Savant, we all make mistakes as coaches. Signed Chris Forrester. Miss you, thinking about you. Kind of weird that that guy did that and has more job security than DQ, who would never do something like that.

Going for it and. I think it would have your first. All right, take a break. Illegal shit. There's not a pony to go.

When we come back, we are open for a brief segment. I've got Derek Carr coming up twelve forty. Ryan Spielberg's coming up at two twenty, and then around that, a lot of baseball and your reaction.

That is my adopted fam. I've got no issue with it. Rome Matt Tober is dead, but Wistober is alive and well. Lafleur is plucking the nails out of his coffin with each win. The Brewers are in the Fall Classic.

This matchup is going to make for an incredible World Series as both teams play the same way: limit walks, work the pitchers, play. Good defense. The Brewers' bats and bullpen are on a tear, so it's going to be Brewers with a clean sweep. World Wisco Sports, Matt in Green Bay. What's it going to be?

Is it going to be a clean sweep, or is it going to be an incredible World Series? I guess incredible for you if you're a Brewers fan, and they sweep. They definitely are favored, and they should be. They should be. I like the Rays.

There is a lot to like about the Rays. And they were the best team in the American League this year, without question. But Milwaukee looks to be better overall, and we'll see. The matchup is really, really interesting. I want to hold off on that momentarily.

Ryan Spielberg is going to join me in hour number three, and we'll break it down. Let's go to the phones, though. In the meantime, let's go to Portland. John in Portland. John, what's up with you, dude?

Hey Romy, thanks for the vine. I just want to say that Forty Niners, if they were to play that game last year, they would have lost it, and I think that comes down to. The junior lobster, but also Raheem Morris dialing up the defense. Like they're out there, they're playing nasty. And if you look at it too, a lot of young draft picks are starting to ball out.

Unlike previous years, like 2020 or 2021, when the only good draft pick they got was Brock Purdy MVP. And then also, though, if you look at it. Even with all the injuries, you never hear the junior lobster have a freakout like McVeigh or go full Britney Spears and shave his head like Sirianni. Just super pumped for the Forty Niners right now. Six to zero feels good, man.

Wore the quest for six. I'm out. And you got it. And never freak out like Britney Spears or freak out like Sirianni and go Britney Spears and shave his head. Get the Clippers out.

No man, the lobster doesn't trip like that. And you're right, Raheem's done a great job. Raheem always does a great job as a coordinator. I love Raheem, and I wish Raheem had more success as a head coach because I like the guy so much. But he always seems to fare better as a coordinator, and he's doing a great job with them.

And you're right, other guys are stepping up. I'm just I'm looking at the 49ers; they seem to be the best team in the NFL. They seem like it, but then Mike Evans goes down, and they seem like a totally different team. Credit for finding a way—that's the bottom line. Nick the Clone and I talk about this sometimes off air.

You got to find a way. You just got to find a way. That's all that matters. You have to find a way, and the Niners always seem to find a way. That's what John just said.

But you wonder, you know, it is such a long season. We know it's a war of attrition. We know they're banged up. We know they're going to get more banged up. They do play well.

They deal well with adversity. But you can only take so much. Like you don't want to see them playing their best ball or being their healthiest in the middle of October. But I can't really speculate, except that they're the Niners, and generally they do get banged up. But they are unbeaten, and they do find a way.

Oh, and by the way, Brock Purdy. All of you who want to kill Brock Purdy and say that he's a system quarterback and a scrub, the highest-rated quarterback of all time. He is. Look it up. The highest-rated QB, highest-qualified rated quarterback in NFL history right now, and playing like an MVP.

But. We'll have to wait and see about Mike Evans. He he will not be the same quarterback. Nobody would be if you lose a weapon like that. And so the Rams are without Devonte Adams.

The Niners may or may not be without Mike Evans. Where are you going to find wide receivers? Not that the Commanders matter a hell of a lot.

Sorry about that, Commander fan. But Terry McLaurin's down for the rest of the year. There are obviously some receivers on the street right now that are taking telephone calls. All right, when we come back, Derek Carr joins us. Break right now, so we get to it.

He's next. Ryan Spielberg's hour number three. Stay tuned. You're listening to the Jim Rome Show. I am efforting Derek Carr.

As soon as I find him, I'll let you know.

So let me quickly go to chat at 209 Stuck in Lodi. Quote: Why can't I? Get some feedback on the Vikings. I'm watching all these guys drop and have all these problems. I don't see any problems in Minnesota yet, with the best record in the league.

Tom in Lodi. Hey, Tom, my guy. Let's not confuse you being stuck in Lodi with me not talking about the Vikings. I don't know how often you watch or listen to this show. We've talked plenty about the Vikings.

What do you mean you see no problems? Wait, you watch the Vikings and you see no problems. Yes, they're undefeated, but did you know that your team, that same team that you say that I never talk about, which we talk a hell of a lot about actually, your team is averaging fewer yards per game than the Chargers. The Chargers are the biggest disappointment in the NFL. The Chargers.

Are one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Chargers are winless. They're the most famous bad offense ever, and yours is worse. But you see no problems. Again, my brother.

Nothing against Lodi, but do not confuse you being stuck in Lodi. Your handle. Not mine. With me not talking about the Vikings, we've talked plenty about the Vikings. We still talk about the Vikings.

Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean I'm not doing it. Come on, man. Tom in Lodi, hashtag 209. Dude, you're in the 209. You gotta be better than that.

We do talk about the Vikings, and one of our talking points is how in the hell are they undefeated with that offense?

Well, because their defense might be the best unit, period, in the NFL. Talked about that, but you haven't heard it, Tom. Not my problem. That's your problem. Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean I haven't said it.

Because I have, Robert, Mister Seventy Two Forty Nineers, to call up Deion. He's ready. He's been working out on the beach. Either Dejan or Ayuk. They may need either him, if he's free, or Ayuk, if he's ready.

Add finish W. Chat is like. I'll finish that thought momentarily, as promised. We are joined right now by a former NFL quarterback. He played eleven years in the league, nine with the Raiders, two with the Saints.

A four-time Pro Bowler, he threw for over forty-one thousand yards and two hundred and fifty-seven TDs in his career. He currently serves as a special advisor to the UCLA football team and is the co-host of the Home Grown with David and Derek Carr podcast. Of course, I'm talking about Derek Carr. Derek, my man, has been. A minute is so good to see.

How you doing, Derek? I am doing so good, Jim. Thank you for having me, man. I've missed you. It's been too long.

It has been too long. I miss you too, brother. Listen, bring me up to date.

So you officially retired last year in May with a shoulder injury. How are you feeling physically right now? And what have you been doing with the next start or the next chapter of your life? Yeah, so that that whole shoulder deal was wild. I went to get ready for the season.

I go to start throwing, and I couldn't throw it ten yards. I was like, "What the heck?" I've never had something like that. End up getting a shot in it. End up rehabbing it, and it took me took me about six months because I did not want surgery. And then we did scans, did everything again, and everything's clear.

Everything was good, but it took me all the way into like early November, December to actually feel good of that year. And then I had a few calls of people wanting me to come back. And all this kind of stuff, I've had probably six teams call. I mean, Jim, I train six times, six days a week. I'm in the probably the best shape of my life because I'm getting more sleep now than ever, and and all those things.

But you know, I'm doing the podcast. I'm helping at UCLA, trying to help in any way provide value to their program. And Coach Chesney's done such a great job there, and thankful that he's even allowed me. But man, I'm feeling healthy. I feel great.

Training can press, can do everything, and yeah, man, just enjoying my kids. I like. Derek Carr joining us.

So, Derek, you sound great. You look great. You say you feel great. If the right call comes, are you open to returning? I always told everybody, and and I genuinely mean this, like.

If it's the right thing, and I and I feel it in my heart that I know that it's right, I would ask my wife first. But I think that she would be on board, right? I think that we could do it if there's a chance to you know help someone win a championship. You know, I've I I genuinely believe that I know how to get into the right plays, get out of the wrong ones, and take care of the football and throw it to the right guy, and you know do that. And if that helps provide value to a team and helps them win a championship.

I would love to be a part of that, but you know that those situations are super rare and how that goes.

So I'm always open. I've answered every call. You know, I've answered every call that my every time my agents called, I've answered every call. I've thought about it. I've prayed about it.

It just hasn't been the right one yet. Derek Carr joining us.

I can appreciate that.

So Derek, for instance, if the right call does not come and you've played your last down, do you feel like you were able to leave the game on your own terms? Oh, hundred percent, yeah. Especially with all the calls that I've received, you know, it's it's nice to be wanted, right? No matter what we're all doing, you know, you know, it's nice to be wanted. It's nice to get those calls.

And and again, you know, it was my choice to you know not take the Saints' money and you know just sit there and hopefully rehab and be ready to play and all that. I just didn't feel right about that, and people thought I was crazy, but it just it just wasn't like that's just not how I guess my parents raised me, and so it didn't feel right.

So I retired. And I made that decision personally, and and what I tell everybody is like, you know, I never, I never won the Super Bowl. I never got to do the things that I, I, you know, all the things that I thought that I was going to do. The personal success, yeah, but it's not what football is about. It's about a team.

But when I lay my head down at night, I'm at peace, Jim, because I gave every single day everything I have. I gave Oakland, I gave Las Vegas, and I gave New Orleans, literally my body. I gave them everything. My mind, I poured it all out. Every day, off days, game days, practice days, and so I have peace every time I go to bed because I knew I maxed it out.

Isn't that great? That's why you sleep so well, Derek. I don't know how many people can actually say that. I mean, are you without regrets? Would you go that far?

Oh yeah, never regrets. I think anything that you would have like regret about, like maybe I said something stupid or I did something dumb, and I think we all have those moments where you're like, "Ah man, I I wish I didn't do that." But you also learn from those moments, right? And so I don't want to say that I regret anything. I don't really regret anything, but obviously there was some times where I was I said something dumb or something stupid that you obviously want those things back or you did made a bad decision. Ah, wish I didn't do that, you know.

So you regret those little moments, but to say I have any regrets, absolutely not. Good man, Derek Carr. Joining us, so Derek, you're with UCLA right now. They're one of only six FBS teams that are undefeated. They're six and zero.

Hey, when did you first come together with Bob Chesney, and then what do you do with them right now? Yeah, so special advisor to the head coach, which super thankful that Coach Chesney has literally opened his doors and said full access, whatever you want, because he knows my coaching aspirations. I want to be a head coach. I want to lead a football team. I believe that I can.

You know, Coach Gruden really sparked that in me in telling me some of the things he thought I'd be doing well. You know, in that area.

So I got into this world, and I I remember calling D. Ray, who's the general manager of the UCLA Bruins, who's put together a heck of a team. And I called him. I said, Hey, man. Would you be interested in me like helping out?

I got a place in Newport. I come down there, you know, quite often with my family. And he said, "You know what?" Easy answer, yes. And Coach Chesney, he walked straight to Coach Chesney's office. Chesney's like, "Are you kidding?

Derek Carr wants to help? Absolutely." The answer is yes. Tell him to come down, and let's figure it out. He said, "The answer is yes. We'll figure out the rest later." And that's really how he's been.

You know, he's I'm on the phone. You know, with the offense coordinator, I'm texting him. I'm I'm doing my reports. I'm doing my thing. I'm doing the work.

You know, and I get to do most of it remote. You know, and I told Coach Chesney the only thing I ask is I didn't retire to go spend less time. With my family, I said, if I can help and there's something I can provide you value, remote and at the games and at practice when I get when I can be there, I have to be able to coach my kids. And he said, I I would tell you no if you didn't want to coach your kids, you know.

So he he he was unbelievable in allowing me. I still coach my kids and able to be able to be a dad in that area, but still be full time, full in with UCLA and and and pour into the to that team that that way. Derek Carr joining us.

So Derek, Aspirationally, what level would you want to be a coach at? Do you want to be a college head coach, an NFL head coach? What are you looking for, ultimately? Yeah, for. Yeah, Jim.

Like right now in this season of our life, it would definitely be college. You know, that that would be my dream to lead to lead a college program. You know, you know, down the ramp and lead them on the field and and really create a place of stability for you know the quarterback position and and every position. Like there's there's a pandemic going down with these quarterbacks, man. That you know, there's reasons that guys like Philip Rivers and myself are getting calls.

There's a player development thing going on there where I just want to create a place that I'm. Not going to say we have all the answers, but create a place that's stable for that position, where we can teach football and get them prepared for the next level if they want to stay. You know, NIL and transfers have have heard all that, and it's not on coaching. They're doing the best that they can with a new roster every single year. But I would love to be able to create a program that would create some stability for coaches and create stability for families, because that is a that is a world that doesn't have much stability.

So I would love to do that at that level, and maybe some day when. My kids are grown and out of the house. I would think about something else.

So, Derek, in terms of quarterback development, where are we going wrong? What's going on? I just think that you know. Let's say that Jim, you're the starting quarterback at whatever university, and I'm the backup, right? They see you; you're starting; you're going to be there for two years.

Well, they look at me.

Well, clearly, I wasn't good enough to be the starter yet, right? But other teams will say, "Hey, you're good enough to be our starter. Come exactly how you are, and kind of we'll give you two, three, four million, and you can be our guy." Well, where's the development in that? You know, where is the? I was told I wasn't good enough yet, and I was going to redshirt and back.

Up for two years, all that did was light a fire in me. If I would have just left and went, I would have never got to be to the player that I was was supposed to be. If I didn't have that bit of adversity and say, "You know what? You're right," and I pointed the finger at myself, my dad said, "Look at yourself and say, what was it about you that made them say no?" Now go change it. And so I had eighteen months to go, change it, and work on it, and grow, learn more football, learn scheme, learn coverage, learn blitzes, learn protections, all so that when my time.

Came, I was never a backup the rest of my life, and so for me that was a really cool cool moment for me. And I think that I think that that right there is what's hurting. Is we're saying you're good enough where you're at, just come be what you are for us, how you are, and yeah, you'll get better. But when you know how it is, you get in a new system, you got to learn a new system. There's so much there.

There's not really a lot of a lot of brain power there to be able to say, okay, I'm going to learn those new words in this new system, my new teammates, the new chemistry, all this, and I'm going Learn more football, and I'm going to get better at this system.

So I think that there's something there to create stable environments for people that could help. I like what I hear. He's a former NFL quarterback again. Eleven years in the league, in great shape. Open to the right situation.

If not, he's all good. Derek, my man. You and I had so many great conversations when you played. It is so good to run you down, get caught up, and spend some time with you, man. Appreciate you so much.

Oh, Jim, you're the best, man. It's always good to talk to you. Derek Carr joining us.

Derek, good to see you, brother. Derek Carr. All right.

So he sounds great. He looks great. And again, for the right opportunity, he says his shoulder is great and he might play. Or for the right opportunity, he's open to playing. Otherwise, living a good life, spending time with the family.

Special advisor to Bob Chesney, doing a podcast with his brother. Always a big fan, Derek Carr. Always loved having him on. All right, your thoughts on that, Raider Nation? If you want to weigh and go ahead, and interesting what he said about quarterbacks is so true, right?

Like all these coaches come on and they want to sell, and you hear it on the show all the time. We are a developmental program. How can anybody be a developmental program where at the first sign of adversity a player can go to the portal? And I get that, but how can you be developmental? Stay tuned.
