She's a production consultant and a freedom advocate. She's gained the national and international recognition in her work in film and music and television and digital media.
And she currently works for a New York-based independent film company. And I had the chance to meet her recently at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention. And when I heard Kay's story and the work she was doing, I knew we had to have her on a Christian perspective because she is working to enlighten people and to let them know what's going on around the world, particularly in socialist and communist countries, and really the threat that it proposes to us here in the United States of America today. So Kay, I'm so excited to have you on the show today. Thank you for joining us on A Christian Perspective. Thank you so much, Chris. Thank you for that wonderful introduction. And I'm really glad to be able to talk to you about this. It's just such an important topic these days because we see what's happening in our country around us now. So we really have to I believe we really have to pay attention to what's going on and we can learn a lot from other countries and their experience.
Well, that's something that you and your company are doing to help people learn more. Before we talk about Swoop Films and the project Finding Courage, can you tell us a little bit about your personal life? I always like for our audience to get to know our guests on a personal level, if you don't mind, just kind of let us know who you are, your family and it sounds like you have an accent. So you probably didn't start off in the United States.
Tell us a little bit about Kay. Yes, I do have an accent. My accent is Australian actually. So I grew up in Sydney, Australia and I really felt fortunate. I grew up in a Russian Orthodox family. So my family had escaped Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, the Russian Revolution and because they were people of faith, my grandmother was very devout and really that faith kept our family together. It was the real beacon of hope, I think, for our entire family and for me growing up, that was just such a very important foundation for me. But my family didn't really talk about their experiences in Russia or their experiences in China because they had escaped communism. The Soviets, when they came and took over the Russian country, they took over their culture, they destroyed families and family units and they destroyed people who wanted to have private property and business owners and they really targeted people of faith. So my family were both business owners as well as people of faith.
And they spent five years, so this is on both sides of my family, so similar stories from my dad's side and also my mom's side. But one set of great-grandparents, they traveled by foot from western Russia down through Mongolia and down to China. They did have horseback sometimes. Sometimes they were traveling with the Russian army, they called them the white army and they called the communist the red army. They were being chased by the red army.
They were really lucky to survive. They saw bodies hanging in trees, in forests, people that were killed by the communists because they did not follow the ideology and it was a very absolutely terrifying time. So it took five years for my family to find freedom. But they went to China and that was before the communist party took over there. So a lot of Russians, they founded churches and they founded communities and they were allowed to stay in northern parts of China and both sides of my family were there. But then the communism started to take over, there was a civil war, the Chinese Communist Party became the one-party state head of China and my father grew up and was born and raised in China for 14 years and he never liked to talk about it. So they escaped to Australia when my dad was 14. It was just after what I call the great famine in China, probably the worst environmental disaster in history, in the current history where the land was destroyed, so many people were destroyed. They just didn't have food, I mean all my father told me was that they just didn't have enough food to eat. And so in Australia, my family, they stopped speaking Chinese, they spoke Russian at home, we spoke English in Australia.
I spent every weekend in church and with my grandma and it was wonderful. We had the traditional Russian culture, Russian food and Russian dancing and I went to Russian school and on the weekends. So there's a segment of a Russian community where you lived in Australia?
Correct, this is in Sydney. So I still went to regular school and I had all my regular Australian friends but my religious community and my family community was Russian. So it's really quite interesting, I thought I had the best of both worlds let's say.
That is interesting. Well how did you end up in the United States? Well that happened quite a lot long, it would have been, I came here almost 11 years ago and yeah 11 and a half years ago and I came here for work and I knew because I was, by then I had learned about communism despite the fact that my family didn't want to talk about it because they just had found freedom.
So they didn't feel they needed to tell us the evils of the things they'd been through. They never expected that our generation and my children's generation would have to face it. And so when I came to America in 2010, I knew that I could have more impact with myself making work here, releasing movies here than if I did that in Australia and which has been the case even though it's been very difficult. But what I found in America is that there is through politics and global agendas and those people who intentionally want to take away the Christian worldview, the biblical worldview and really they're trying to destroy the culture here using this communist ideology and I realized that a lot of people didn't know that and then when I found, really dug into my roots, I started to really value what my family had been through and realized that we take our freedom for granted and especially here in America, I really feel that too often we take our freedom for granted and in the last few years that's changing and I'm very encouraged by that.
But I like to say my children, my parents never expected that their grandkids might need to flee again another country. That if America doesn't protect its freedoms then there is nowhere else to go. So it's very pertinent that we look at the history of this because there's so much we can learn from that. Okay and it's really scary what's happening on college campuses and even in high schools today where Americans don't realize the story and we're going to get into this in a few minutes of like what your family has been through.
They don't realize the threat that communism poses not just on the freedoms of people but particularly to the church as well and we really need to wake up and that's why the work that you're doing is so important. Her family has experienced communism firsthand and they had to flee from two communist countries to gain the freedom that they have today. We're going to take a quick commercial break. My guest today is Kay Rubichek with Swoop Films, and we're so honored to have an internationally acclaimed filmmaker with us today. The documentaries that Kay makes call out and bring attention to the issues involved with communism and the freedoms that people lose, particularly in the church and communist countries around the world. The threat is being faced in the United States today as socialism is growing and even communism is becoming more popular in our country.
It's really scary. Kay, you are a filmmaker today. How in the world did you get interested in filmmaking and get started in that career? Actually, I went to college as a fine arts major. I had to make a choice between music and art. Those two fields have always been very dear to my heart since being a child, but I chose art at that time. When I left college, I actually found a job as a producer.
It wasn't going to be like that. I was really very fortunate. I think I was very blessed to work in the company where I did. I was originally hired as a voiceover artist and a music composer. My boss recognized that he needed a producer. He was really like a project manager.
I was going to ask you to say that because that's the term that we hear. If you're not in the film world, because when you go to see a movie, you see so many names, Kay. There's the executive producer, the senior producer, and so-and-so producer.
I know this is not what we're supposed to talk about today, but what's the difference? What really is the producer? Sometimes it's someone who owns the movie too or oversees the entire project.
It's so true. Chris, I'm thinking about writing a book about this because I get asked so many questions almost every day. I train producers and I work with professional producers. To your point, what producers are, basically, they are the most important. My boss used to introduce me.
He used to introduce our whole team. We had graphic designers and all different creative people. Then he would come to me and say, Kay's the producer.
I don't know what she does, but she's the glue that keeps everything together and makes things happen. Producers, essentially, you could call them project managers. I find that sort of more easy for people to understand. There's essentially three types of producers. There's financial producers.
They're the ones that put in the money. You will see they may go by the name of executive producer. There's also executive producers that put their name on things because of their skills and notoriety in society. You see a lot of actors who have their names as producers too, right? Is that different? Correct.
It is different. Then there's the creative producers, people who have an input on how things are going to look and come across, but they're not the final decision maker. The director makes that decision. Then there's another type of producer, which is more of an organizer, the real project management. They're kind of like a line producer. They decide. Well, they get everything in motion. They make sure everything runs like clockwork. The budgets are all met. All those details. It's kind of rare for a producer to be all three of those types.
They're usually one or two of them at most, but sometimes you find someone. I do work in all three or all of those. But I think just because of my experience that I've had the opportunity to work in all of those aspects of producing. I started in educational video gaming, actually. That's where I started. But then when the company decided they wanted to start making video games for two-year-olds, I felt that was too much. I just thought, no, I really don't want my children to be doing that. But it's a different world now.
That was more than 20 years ago. Then eventually, I mean, I've worked in producing music and all forms of media, but I found that film is the most popular format at the moment. It's very effective when you have people sit in a room together and watch a movie and you hear them laugh together. You hear them gasp together.
You see them cry together. You have that shared experience that you don't get in other art forms. It's very powerful and can be very inspiring and encouraging. I really do like this particular format. I get to use my music skills and my producing and directing skills in this format.
It kind of brings them all together. I like that. Your company is called Swoop Films. Did you start that in Australia or here in the United States?
Here in the United States, yes. I was working with a colleague who's American, though he's originally from New Zealand, an excellent cinematographer and also a producer. We began working together on an earlier movie that we made called Hard to Believe. He encouraged me and said, you really should be directing. I just produce. I think you can direct. That's why we started this next movie, Fighting Courage, which I did direct and co-produce. That was a really good experience.
Before we jump into the movie, I had one more curious question. Does Swoop stand for something or where did you get that name? These days, it's hard to name a business because businesses need a website. Websites need domain names. I needed.com. I wanted to have something in the name that would allow me to use wings, like angel wings in the logo. I wanted something I thought to do with flights. I just wanted to do that to remind myself that this is a company that's creating products and movies to help people look up to the divine and to help restore faith and really just break down this notion of atheism and that the people get so fooled by.
I went through lots of different names for somethingfilms.com. Swoop is a type of, you know, a bird swoops down. I thought, well, how about that? It's the swooping sort of...
I could put two wings that kind of remind me of angel wings. I did that because it was important to me to remind myself the mission behind this company because that's what it's all about. That's interesting. So your company, I think primarily makes documentary films. What made you decide to go in that route and are all of your films decidedly Christian or only deal with the communism issue?
What type of work do y'all do? So far documentaries because all my work in all the different fields, even starting in the gaming, was all educational non-fiction. So when I went into the film industry, even though I have written some scripts that are fiction and for actors and things like that, I just thought, you know, I was a little bit nervous starting out on my own originally before I had my business partners join me and I thought, well, I know I can do non-fiction and I know I can do documentary. So that's where I started and that's where we stayed so far that we would like to expand and go into narratives like with scripted films or TV series with actors.
That's something that I do want to work on. All the work we've done so far has been focused on China and because that was... I also witnessed that firsthand. I was in China. I mean, that's another story but I was arrested in China and spent a day in the Chinese prison and so I got to see another world and I saw with the censorship that was going on in China and in our own media here in the US that that's a story that is not being told.
And so that's where we started and to me that was... The first movie we did, Hard to Believe, was really, to me, it's the crime of the century. The killing of prisoners of conscience or the sale of their organs. Now that's Christians, that's legal Muslims but it really started with Hong Kong practitioners. So these are all spiritual people of faith in China and they've been targeted for that and they are killing them and selling their organs in China and we have so much evidence of that. So to me, that was the crime of the century, to know that and not talk about it felt like I would be doing a disservice to my own children, basically, to not do something because I know that this will come out in the future.
So that's where I started. That's the government. If we can talk about that movie for a second, is it the government that is killing people and harvesting the organs? It is state sanctioned and it's being carried out through hospitals with registered medical doctors, staff, all involved.
It is absolutely horrific. If you need a heart or a liver and I know there's a lot of people that do and I have absolute respect and sympathy and empathy for them but I want them to know where they're getting, where these organs are coming from. So if you want, say you want a new heart, you need a heart. You can go to China and you can get it in a week. How?
And then if it doesn't work out, they will get you another one in a week. We have so many cases of this fully documented and the Chinese Communist Party brags about this in their own media. Are they kids having people off the street or just people that are patients in the hospital and they just kill them while they're there? They have arrested hundreds of thousands of people and they blood tested them. This started in 2001. We have evidence that this started in the 1980s originally because this is not illegal in China technically. So they're allowed to use the organs of prisoners. So there's a law from 1984 in China that allows that. So they can kill prisoners in prison to take their organs? Yes, on demand and they have their blood tested and they have their tissue types and they test the organs. We've interviewed many, many people who were being terribly tortured because they were religious believers in China but they were receiving tests for the health that were only related to the health of their organs which was extremely suspicious and investigators began looking into that. A doctor's wife came forward and more doctors have come forward.
So for them it's very difficult because they're complicit in a truly horrific crime. Wow, what an incredible story. Folks, if you're just joining us, our guest today is Kay Rubicek. It's Chris Hughes. My guest today is Kay Ruvacik. Kay, what an incredible story if you gave your testimony of how your family has been persecuted both in Russia and in China and you moved to Australia and now you're in the United States and God's given you an opportunity and unique skill sets to make documentaries to let people know what's going on around the world and particularly in communist countries. Before the commercial break, we were talking about one of your early films where you documented cases where the Chinese government was harvesting organs from prisoners and from people in the hospitals. Kay, I want to kind of shift gears to a movie you have now called Finding Courage and folks, I want to encourage you to register to attend the Culture Engagement Summit which is going to be on April 30th in Memphis, Tennessee.
Kay and her team from Swerve Films are going to be at the Culture Engagement Summit and they're going to give an early showing of their film called Finding Courage. It's a powerful documentary about strength of family and hope and Kay, tell us how that movie came about and then what happens in the documentary. So this is a documentary that it's a family story and it took us six years to make because when you make a documentary, there's sort of two ways to do it. One way is you know what you want to say and then you write it and then you interview people and you kind of follow the line that you have in your mind.
There's another way to do it. I mean there's many ways but this is another common way and this way takes a long time but it's where you follow a group of people or in this case we followed a family and we documented their journey and we didn't know where it would end and so the story had to be you know we found and in life I think God provides just there's so many stories around us it's just amazing how do you choose but this one was I feel was given to me and I take that as a blessing and that I had to do the best I could to tell the story. So I met this family, this woman Yifei Wang. She lives in San Francisco. She was a former reporter in China for the Chinese Communist Party and her husband was still a reporter for the Chinese Communist Party in China and at the time when we started he was going back and forth between the US and China and then I knew her story was already quite remarkable. She had been through so much persecution in China. Every 10 years or so the CCP, the Chinese Communist Party has another persecution against another group of people. There was the Tiananmen Square massacre against the students in 1989 and in 1999 there was against the Falun Gong persecuted group so because that's very traditionally a very traditional Chinese spiritual practice which comes from the Buddhist school so it's very ancient and so she was her sister was part of that and she started following that later herself. This is Yifei Wang but her sister was killed for holding a banner on Tiananmen Square and for not giving up her beliefs in labor camp and she was murdered in a labor camp and they told me that the labor camp still has her body and they were trying to get it back and this is 16 years after her death and there's so many stories from China that just seems unbelievable and like what we see around us now in America. There's stories where we think how is it even possible our schools have got to this system?
Well I say look at China and the unbelievable stories that are happening there show us where things can go if the communist ideology takes over a nation. So that's what I found through this story. So yeah I know I'm getting too detailed into the story but essentially I know please do this. This is good. It's okay? Okay.
Yes please do. So this sister was murdered in the labor camp and I said how can you prove that? I always trust my subjects but I have to double check because also I'm a journalist too so I must.
I can't just take things on face value I have to be sure that I do my own fact checking not rely on these so-called independent fact checkers that are controlling our media these days. I have to do my own research so I always do and the family was able to provide the documents in the labor camp and I did my own investigations and I interviewed I found witnesses that were at the same labor camp at the same time with the sister and they testified to me on camera about their experiences. So this was all this was true and then her brother he was still alive but he had been sentenced to 13 years in prison for printing flyers. So remember that's happened in China and we see what's happening here in the US.
So you know we can learn from China where things will go if we don't stop it here. So her brother was sentenced to 13 years for printing flyers and put in the in the in the prison. He tortured terribly but then he eventually got out after 12 years and nine months and he it was a miracle he made it to America and we were we were able to film him and so our story expanded. So we have this healing story as well as he has terrible PTSD coming out, could barely speak and he began recovering and he began trying to figure out what is this freedom, what is this because in America because he's never known that he's only ever known communist society in China.
So we have this healing story of new immigrants to America that really come to understand, appreciate and love the freedom of a country that is based on Christian values. They are so appreciative of that and I believe that comes through in the movie. And then we have this undercover footage, this subplot that's going on in the movie where the family is still trying to get back their sister's body because they want to have a funeral for her, they want some closure and so we get undercover footage access inside a Chinese labor camp that's never before seen and we have that in our movie because of the courage of this family.
So that's essentially the story that has a lot of action, there's drama, it's all true and it all unfolded in front of us and then with 100 hours of footage I then had to go into the editing room and put it together and which took a couple of years but I feel that the effort was worth it in the end. So Kay, if you've made these other movies revealing what's happening within the Chinese government, how are you getting in the country and how are y'all getting this undercover footage without getting a prisoner killed? It's extremely dangerous and it's also very difficult because if you want to talk to any true experts on China, those true experts, they state the objective facts and they don't just repeat the Chinese Communist Party lines.
So it means they are denied access to get into China, they're not allowed and so it's very difficult. So our first movie, we took the angle of how can this work for an American audience and so we took the angle of why are so few people paying attention to such a horrific crime and so we were able to prove that the crime is happening because there's been so much investigation research already done, it's just that it was covered up by the well many powers that be in America as well. So we were able to prevent that information that was very solid but we investigated why aren't we paying attention, why don't we know and so we looked at the media, we looked at the experts, the colleges, why is that information being censored and this has been happening for a long time. The CCP controls many other institutions, they have financial ties to so many of our entertainment media platforms, many of them are too scared to prevent our movies because they feel that maybe the CCP will cut off some of their funding. I've had colleges say to me, we're so excited to do a screening of your movie and then they'll call back and say, oh we've been told by our administration that we have too many Chinese students in our college and we are afraid that if we screen your movie that we may lose funding from the CCP.
This is to American colleges. So I see there's a huge and I am currently investigating this too, we have so many ties where the CCP is controlling our education and media narratives in the U.S. to push down the American people and to push down the information that we have access to and to suppress it the same way they do it in China but they're a little bit more discreet about it here. So it's very difficult to get access to information from China but we just have been able to find ways to do it. Yeah, that might make a good documentary in itself. I do a lot of missions work in other countries and I know particularly in poor countries in the Caribbean and other areas, China's going in and they build airports and hospitals and spend a lot of money on infrastructure in these poor countries and then they have them.
I mean like you said because they're funding so much going on in the country just like with these colleges, people are afraid to turn against or speak out against what China's doing and it's really a disgrace in the world today. Chris Hughes, my guest today, is Kay Rubichek. She has a great company called Swoop Films where they are developing documentaries and really opening the eyes of people around the world to things that are going on in China and in other communist nations and trying to say, hey, America, you need to wake up because this could happen right here in the United States as well. Kay, it just scares me to see how socialism and communism are really spreading, particularly on college campuses across the country today. So we were talking about some of the undercoverage footage that you have for your film Finding Courage, and you said you started about six years ago. Are people still being tortured in slave labor and have that corruption today even though it's been six years?
Oh, yes. The Chinese Communist Party was officially incited to take over the nation of China in 1949. So they've been operating for a long time and they have never changed their mode of operation, even though technology has expanded and provided new ways of censorship and control as a nation. Many technology, a lot of these have changed, but people have been able to get rich in China.
It hasn't changed the ideology of the communists in any way. They still have these long-term goals. When they look at America wanting to take over here, they've instituted a cultural war against them. That's what we're starting to see more publicly now.
We're more aware of it, but it's been going on for a very long time. China is the best example, I believe, that we have of learning where things could go and being able to see what happens to schools, to children, to generations. We can see generations of communist ideology from children up to adults now and how they have changed and how they have been brainwashed by a one-party state. I like to tell people that the constitution of China is beholden to the constitution of the CCP. So it's very different to our foundation here in the US.
The constitution of the CCP essentially has not changed at all. That's the Chinese Communist Party. It requires absolute national control and it implements this strategy that I like to term money above all else. So because they are strictly atheist, they push a worship of materialism and money. So after they gut the faith of the society, they just push materialism and devotion to wealth and money.
So that destroys family life because people are putting money above their siblings, above their parents. They're making choices based on money rather than on faith or respect for the divine. This is what a communist ideology does but China calls itself a socialist society. So don't be fooled when someone says, well socialism is not communism. Chinese Communist Party uses the term communism in their name but when you read their constitution, they say very clearly we are a socialist society heading towards communism. They see communism as their heaven but that's where they want to play God.
They believe they are better than us regular people and they believe they can be God. And to me, that is the biggest danger to any society is when people are fooled like that and really take that perspective because then they start to control others. And then you have these types of communist worlds where which is what the CCP has created and we start to see in different ways here but we see the cultural war coming across and the destruction of faith and the pushing of atheism and materialism especially in the younger generations and that's where we must, I really firmly believe we must get back a more biblical worldview for people especially the younger generations here. It's very important. Yeah, it's so important Kay and you have a problem is you have a whole generation of young people today who hardly ever read the Bible and they don't go to church very often. In fact, huge numbers of kids I was reading to study the other day go away to college and then they never go to church again but even if they go to church, about 90% of pastors in America never address issues like this. I don't think I've ever heard a sermon on communism or addressing the things going on in China that you're talking about today and we have got to educate our kids to understand these issues to know what they believe and why they believe it is Christians.
We're going to become a communist nation at some point down the road and I know that's a fear that you have. So Kay, if somebody wants to see your film, I'm assuming because of the pressure of China you're probably not being able to release in movie theaters. How do people find your film? Exactly, because of the pressure of China, it's extremely difficult to release films on the big platforms these days because of their financial ties to China. So if you're on a platform with regular movies, send them a message and say, why can't you have finding courage on this platform because I can guarantee you they've been offered and we've got to the top of many big platforms and then being rejected.
Have you tried to go on the prime and all that? Because people like to really think about and look at the financial ties behind their media organization. But yes, anyway, so they can see the movie screening at your conference so that would be great because I'm going to be there, our team will be there, we can talk in person. You can sign up for a free trial there and you can watch finding courage on that platform. So that's where we are at the moment but we've been partnering with different organizations who understand, like yourselves, who understand the need to talk about communism because we're really facing it right now. So I think that's, yeah, we're looking to partner with more organizations to help get this message out. I know for my, you know, I've got two teenage children. Some are young men now so I can't even say the child anymore but I think the discussion has to start early in the home. You know, we're just seeing that more and more and I really found to myself that I had to talk to my children about the things going on around them and help them find the strength in themselves to say no to certain things. You know, because I ran video games from my home and that was really hard for my son especially because he's like, everyone at school has video games and I said, I'm sorry, cannot but we found ways for him to still fit in at school in regular public system and still have friends and not be isolated and but also to understand what video games did to him because I saw how it would change him. So there's so many things but it has to, it's hard, it's really hard for parents, I really feel for parents but we have to be really engaged with our children.
It's a really tough battle that we face but I think it's even tougher for the children so we have to work, put in a lot of extra effort. Well we really do. Well Kay, if a church wanted to show this, so is there a licensing fee or can people just buy the movie and show it at the church or in a home group, how does that work? Well if it's a home group, you can stream it, you can buy it, stream it from the website. We also have DVDs available. We do, it is an honor system so we do ask for larger groups to purchase a license through our website, Screening License. So they can stream it like Netflix then from your site?
Yes, from our site, that's right. Have you had any luck trying to get it on a platform like Netflix or Rime Video? We have tried. We're on iTunes, we're on Google Play, we're on Vudu, so those platforms we are on. Our last movie was on Amazon but they have rejected this movie. They have, not just ours, they've started cracking down on a lot of faith-based movies, other movies that are exposing communism, socialism, especially in America.
It's been very disappointing. We did have high-level talks with Netflix and a number of other media that we expected would have taken this movie because it's won so many awards at film festivals. The storytelling is there, you see it, that people are moved by the movie. So we know that it works in terms of production, quality and storytelling. It's all there but we know in censorship and financial times that China has shut it down from some of the biggest in conservative networks in the US which was very surprising and very disappointing.
Netflix, well we were kind of not surprised because they don't take a lot of faith-based movies, especially documentaries, so it is harder there. But some of the other platforms I thought that might have taken it, I expected would have taken it and the US didn't and that was quite disappointing. So doesn't mean we give up. I feel like we're not here to, we have to remember our purpose here in the world.
It's not about, I feel like okay, yes I'm a filmmaker, yes I run a business but ultimately I feel that there's a greater mission at hand and that's what I always have to keep in mind. My husband's family escaped communism in the form of Czechoslovakia where he was born and raised until he was seven. They didn't want, the Russians had come in, the Soviets come in and took over the country with tanks.
They did it violently, not like they're doing here, different format here but what my mother-in-law told me really taught me so much. He said, Kate if we had known that the Berlin Wall was going to fall only a few years after we left Czechoslovakia, we would never have left. They left everything. They had money, they had land, they had property, they had a wonderful lifestyle. They left because they just couldn't, they wouldn't have been persecuted had they stayed. But if it was only, they really never saw that it was possible to take on communism. They never believed but they were not people of faith.
They're not spiritual, they say they're atheists which you know, fine. But I think people of faith can learn from this even more so, is that even when it seems difficult and we're getting shut down on so many fronts, we can learn from history that we know that God's got a greater plan and that we just have to keep going forward and the right things will happen even when it seems absolutely impossible. The Berlin Wall did fall, no one ever imagined that it could ever fall but it did and that gives me hope.
No matter how bad things may seem in our society here or China or anywhere, I believe that God's in control.
